Problems with 2006 Jeep Commander ENGINE

On average, the 2006 Jeep Commander starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 100 721 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2006 Jeep Commander

Turned vehicle off at store, came out to start it and while i was in the store a valve seat fell out of the cylinder head into the cylinder. engine now needs an entire rebuild costing half of the book value of the vehicle. upon research online, this is a very common problem with these engines specific to 2006-2007. from what i have read it was due to a known issue from a vender that supplied the cylinder heads.

As i was driving down the road my automobile turned off and stopped working while driving! this is very dangerous and is very ridiculous considering i received a recall notice over 1 year ago concerning this problem. i make every attempt to ensure the functions of my vehicle are running properly for the safety of my family. i have young children and they could have been seriously injured had we been involved in an accident at the time of my vehicle's failure to operate correctly, due to the manufacturers irresponsibility of taking care of this problem within a proper time frame! jeep and local dealers have been contacted multiple times to try to correct this problem, with no help from them it has yet to be repaired!

1.it leaks. whenever there is rain i have 2-3 inches of water in the front foot area on both sides. in addition to that water leaks through the lining and front pillars of the truck landing on the dashboard. what is this about? this not only results in my time to drain out the water it also leads to a gross musty smell. after a rain i can hear the water swishing back and forth in ht roof of my car. this is rediculous. further this issue has done something to the electrical system. 2.the electrical system. the driver's side door window/lock/mirror switches no longer work. so that means that the driver's side window hasn't been down in forever. that makes life quite difficult. the next electrical problem is that for no apparent reasons lights come on. as i driving the interior lights just start to shine bright all of them at the same time. one night i woke up at three in the morning to find my headlights on. i tried to turn them off but couldn't. it eventually wore the battery out. lastly electronics wise is my dashboard lights flicker crazy. 3.the door handles. behind the actual door handle is plastic. this has all broken away. i am sure it is just a matter of time before i can open the doors at all. 4.it just stops running. five times now as i am driving (streets or highway) the truck has just shut down. fortunately it starts right back up but this is extemely dangerous. this form asks for dates...all of this is ongoing.

I was driving down the interstate and the engine completely shut off. one of the scariest things i have ever experienced. luckily traffic was minimal at the time, but in traffic, it could have been a huge disaster.

My family and i were driving down the highway at 75 mph and without any warning, the engine died. when the engine died, the engine indicator light came on. power steering and braking were fine at first. i steered the car to the side of the road. before coming to a stop, the power steering stopped working. once on the side of the road, i turned the ignition off and then tried to restart the vehicle. the car re-started immediately, however, the engine light remained on. i have taken the car into the shop and the technician was unable to find any problems with the vehicle. ...updated 09/22/15 *bf about one week prior to the above event, i was driving home from the train station on a perfectly dry and clear day and when i was driving, the various traction control lights came on and the car would periodically buck while the rpm's would rev higher for a moment. after arriving home, i turned the car off and parked it in the garage. the nest day when i started it, the traction lights were off and the car appeared to drive normally. the lights that were on were the esp, bas, and the picture of the car sliding. when i took the car in for repair, the dealer couldn't find any issue with the traction system. the same traction issue has happened several more times and has yet to be repaired. updated 09/29/15*jb

After a few minutes car will shut off. im at a stop sign it shuts off, i am yielding to oncoming traffic it shuts off. the vehicle revs up in park.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the engine stalled while driving 40 mph. the engine light illuminated when the failure occurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing, which indicated that the engine cylinders failed. the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system); however; the dealer advised that the part was not available for repair. the manufacturer was not notified. the approximate failure mileage was 135,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to restart and all the warning indicators illuminated. the failure occurred on several occasions. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician stated that the computer software could be the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while attempting to start the vehicle, the engine failed to start. the engine warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the ignition switch needed to be replaced. the ignition switch was replaced, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 130,000. the vin was not available.

I was driving on the express way do 70 mph and we hit a bump and the jeep lost all power. it shut right off. thank fully we were in the outside lane and could get pulled over. the check engine light came on. once we got pulled over we shut the key off and started it back up and it was fine. but the check engine light stayed on.there has been a recall on the ignition switch since june of 2014 and the dealership keeps telling me they don't have the parts. this is my only vehicle and i have a child and do not want to drive it now. *tr

Engine light come on, and stayed on. checked obvious engine problems, oil, belt, gas cap, etc. no obvious cause. took to local mechanic. checked code and reset. advised it had to do with center console shift linkage? advised to bring back as soon as comes on again. this is however not the first time the light has come on for no apparent reason. have had to pull over at least twice before on interstate to check engine. no cause found. after several restarts, light did not come on, and car ran, though sluggish and at time labored. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning twice. the vehicle was taken to a dealer to be repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 140,000.

My jeep acts as if i turned the ignition off while going down the road. today it did it again going down the highway at 65-70 mph. i have no additional keys on the key chain. my seat is slid back and there was no contact with my knee and the ignition switch. i have a 2006 jeep commander and have complained about this since 2007. there is a current recall (p41 / nhtsa 14v-438), that i was finally notified about by my dealer a year ago but there are still no parts available to fix the problem. how long should a known safety issue be allowed to go on without a fix. should we wait for someone to get into an accident and die? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook and stalled. the vehicle was restarted and resumed normal operation. the contact took the vehicle to the manufacturer who diagnosed that the ptm needed to be updated and/or replaced. the contact stated that nhtsa action number: ea07007 (electrical system, engine and engine cooling, power train) directly related to the failure associated with the vehicle. the dealer informed the contact that the nhtsa campaign number: 08v203000 (power train) for the year, make, model, and failure were similar because the investigation involved the 4.7l v-8 engine. the contact's vehicle was equipped with a 5.7l v-8 engine. the manufacturer was unable to provide a recall repair. the manufacturer opened a case on the contact's behalf regarding the vehicle. the approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Vehicle loses ignition power when driving at various speeds. dash cluster warning lights flash multiple times. speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temp gauges fall to zero point. steering becomes difficult/inoperable. vehicle will sometimes regain power. recall related to ignition switch has been open since september 3, 2014. manufacturer has not issued any solution/remedy. manufacturer has suggested "removing extra keys/keychains from ignition key and avoid bumping the ignition key with knees." this is not a remedy. the problem still occurs. this is dangerous. recall is incomplete. nhtsa recall number: 14v-438 manufacturer recall number: p41

See doc i had to replace engiine and now the company that did might responsible for it as well need a attorney or a bbb for help

P41 / nhtsa 14v-438 engine shut off while driving. removed everything from key chain, and left enough space between knee and key. when car bounces, cannot control knee. happened more than 5 times past a month. called chrysler, have no estimated time for parts production. *tr

My vehicle constantly stalls while slowing down to almost a stop or a stops. it happens almost every time now. when slowing down for a light while traffic is slowly moving my jeep stalls and i've almost been hit 5 times now. not good. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at various speeds, the engine stalled. while parked, the vehicle automatically went into reverse. also, the contact stated the air bag warning indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 158,757. ma 10/6 the consumer stated the while driving the vehicle would stall. when the vehicle was in park it would roll backwards. also, the air bag light would turn of and on, the dash lights would flash, and antilock on the dash turns on and off. when coming to a stop the vehicle would make a grinding noise. the vehicle was taking to the dealer who advised the vehicle could not be repaired. updated 3/28/2016*js updated 10/05/2015*cn

While driving the vehicle on a slippery road during a snowfall, my wife observed all of the indicator lights on the dashboard light up simultaneously. shortly thereafter, the engine shut off, causing a loss of power steering and consequently a loss of control of the vehicle on the slippery roadway. as a result, the vehicle slid into a highway maintenance marker along the shoulder of the road, causing minor damage to the license plate holder and bumper of the vehicle. our concern is that this incident is apparently due to a defective ignition switch, which is the subject of a current recall (14v-438) issued by the manufacturer on 9/3/14. however, the manufacturer has not provided a remedy for this defect, citing the unavailability of repair parts, and as of this morning the manufacturer has no idea as to when these repair parts will be available. in the meantime, the phenomenon of the dashboard indicators suddenly and spontaneously illuminating while driving continues to recur rather frequently, and we are afraid that a recurrence of the engine shutoff and loss of power steering and brake assist will also recur, perhaps at a time and location where a much more serious crash will result. *tr

2006 jeep commander idling up on its own and engine made a loud noise. *mw the dealer informed the consumer, the noise was normal for a hemi engine. the consumer was then informed, the problem was the throttle. also when it rained, the consumer discovered water on the driver's side floor. the dealer was unable to find a leak.*jb

While traveling at highway speed and after about 1.5 hours of continuous highway operation, the vehicle stalled without warning. i was able to safely move to the emergency lane and brake to a stop. i placed the vehicle in park, turned the key to off, and re-started without incident. since the first occurrence, this has happened almost daily, always at highway speeds and sometimes while on a curve. this occurs during my daily commute, which is approximately 20 miles, each way. *tr

I was slowly pulling through a stop light (stop and go traffic up to it). jeep suddenly lost power of all kinds - stalled engine, no emergency flashers, no radio, nothing. tried to turn key & restart it a # of times but it was dead. ambulance drove by, stopped & pushed me out of the road. as they were pushing me, electrical came back on. so i tried to turn key again and car started. **i am pretty confident that my knee did not touch the key- i am too short for that and also the car would not restart once stalled- i turned key many times to tr and get out of the road and car remained dead/powerless. all electrical was off. once car came back on, radio stations no longer programmed, etc. much like the battery had died. ** plz note, mileage is estimated- i need to go look inside car. *tr

Jeep started making a ticking noise randomly one day. i made an appointment with the local dealership and they explained the the exhaust manifold bolts were broken on both sides. very strange considering that my jeep have never been off-road. after doing some research it has become very obvious that this is an issue with all of the chrysler vehicles with the 4.7l v8. the company doesn't try to help with the cost and actually charges an astronomical amount to repair something that i consider bad engineering on their part. the broken bolts cause an exhaust leak that can now be detected within the car and i think is potentially dangerous for the passengers. with the bolts broken it also allows the exhaust manifold to warp cause addition damage that now needs to be repaired/replaced. *tr

Received a recall notice in the fall of 2014 that engine may shut off if the key is hit with leg while driving (ignition switch) safety recall-p41/nhtsa-14v-438 this has occurred numerous times, each time we have contacted the dealer, they tell us they haven't received parts to repair it. this is a big concern and a definite safety issue for us. we have contacted our attorney to see where we go from here. at this point in good conscience we couldn't even sell the vehicle! we have contacted you before-no response.

Safety recall from chrysler. *tr

All of my safety warning lights flash on and off repeatedly. when this happens my car electrical things turn off including the ac,radio and everything else. the engine how ever did not. the car kept running but everything else stalled and turned off and on.. the first time was on the street but it continued even on the freeway going 60 mph. i took to dealer and they stated nothing is wrong. they could not find anythin. they even put in on the computer machine and nothing. i have only had vehicle for 2 months and im very worried. i have no other transportation and have to drive the vehicle to work and my kids around. i have a video of how the car kept doing that. if someone can contact me , i would be more than happy to send the vehicle video over. *tr

I think its terrible how jeep/chrysler cant fix a recall...when families got to drive a car that they know there's something wrong with them....since sept..everytime i stop at a red light or a stop sign my jeep turns off..i have to put it in park and start it up again....i cant drive it on the highway because of this...and dealerships say they don't have the parts to fix it....so chrysler making the money they make cant help people trying to make a living when all they have is only one car and its a car they made... *tr

Vehicle seem to loose power while cruising at or around 45 mph or when engages 4th gear. rpm's drop really quick from 3500 to almost 1500 rpm's in matters of second. increasing the risk of a rear end collision if trying to overtake another vehicle or driving up hill, dealer can't find problem. problems happens every time under any weather condition. *tr

Driving my jeep commander from topeka,ks to manhattan,ks drove on the high way when accelerated the vehicle began to jerk and or began a rocking motion. the vehicle jerked or rocked every so often not consistent but very randomly did not notice a pattern. the vehicle did not drive well and felt very unsafe to drive on the high way. *tr

Bought this commander 08/02/14, about two weeks after driving it . it started dropping out of gear and getting stuck in 3rd gear. and when driving on the highway it would completely shut down , i sent it back to where i bought it. for them to fix the problem being i haven't even made my first car payment. and the gave me a run around for two weeks saying they was waiting on parts . then said they had it and had my jeep for almost 4 weeks . before getting my jeep. now its 01/02/15 and its doing it again. i cant make it back and forth to work. or get my kids. with my jeep stuck in third gear and dieing for no reason. *tr

All the electrical components go off and on i.e. a/c, lights on the dashboard and radio then causes the breaks to stop working, while driving! the car keeps stalling out especially while driving and in park!!!

Everytime i drive my jeep it stalls and the wheel locks up (basically turns into manual steering) and my brakes lock up ( no brakes at all) and i had just bought this jeep a wk go from mcgee chevrolet in raynham ma. the first night i drove it home it stalled pulling in to the driveway. i called the dealership the next morning to tell them and they wouldn't take the jeep til the following wk to look at it they came up with every excuse in the world. when i brought the jeep in today they had me sign a deductible of 100 dollars but yet when i first test drove the jeep it i told them to fix it but all they did was cleared the codes (flashed the computer) now i have a rejection sticker on the vehicle and no car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving approximately 35 mph, there was a sudden loss of engine power. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system ) however, the part needed for the recall repair was unavailable. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

This jeep commander was sitting at the gas station after driving it home 30 miles. upon ignition of engine, there was a loud explosives sound, the engine sounded like a bucket of bolts. i shut off the ignition immediately, then got it towed home until i got it to the dealership. the car requires a new engine. there are many similar cases to my story, and i believe there was a major failure due to faulty engine components. an investigation should be launched. there are too many people reporting the same failure, if not on this site, than on other jeep commander forum sites. enough is enough. i was told by the dealership mechanic that there is am bad part in the cylinder #8 that malfunctions causing immediate failure upon restarting the car. this is not acceptable. there are over 1500 complaints for th same problem and no one has fixed the problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the all lights on the instrument panel illuminated then turned off after a few minutes. the gauges and air bag lights also malfunctioned during the failure. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the failure was not diagnosed nor was the vehicle repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the contact received a notification for nhtsa campaign number: 14v438000 (engine, air bags, steering). the failure mileage was unknown.

While traveling on an expressway in central michigan, i was using the cruise control to maintain a speed of 75 mph. with no warning at all, the mechanical components of the vehicle shut down, leaving my jeep "dead in the highway". i was able to steer and brake, but the vehicle would not respond to acceleration by pressing the gas pedal. i pulled off to the shoulder, luckily without incident. turned the key to the "off" position and waited about 10 seconds. i turned the key to the "on" position and it started back up. i cautiously drove at a considerably slower speed until i was able to get to a rest stop. when i got to my destination i found a local auto parts store and had them do a diagnostic check. it showed a maf sensor gone bad. mass air flow sensor was replaced. hoping that was the issue, after several days, my family and i headed back home on the other side of the state. while driving about 60 mph with cruise control, there were no issues. i figured the problem was fixed. unfortunately, i was wrong. as i reached the highway where the speed limit is 70 mph, i accelerated to 70 mph with the cruise control. as soon as i broke the 70 mph point, the car mechanically stalled again as i was trying to merge onto the busy highway. again, luckily, i made it safely to the shoulder and restarted. i was able to exceed 70 mph on the way home without using the cruise control. concerned for my pregnant wife, toddler son, and my own safety, as this happened on a busy highway at a high rate of speed; with no warning lights or sounds. *tr
