We have classified the 173 complaints from 2006 Jeep Commander about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
2006 jeep commander 4.7 v8 stalled in traffic during normal usage. while slowing the commander for a stop the engine cut out and all power equipment was disabled. ie. power steering, power braking, etc... this happened twice and is very unsafe. *jb
06 jeep commander with under 5k miles will "shut down" while i am driving. it does not appear to be speed related. the lights will shut off as will the engine, power steering and power brakes, as well as all auxiliary equipment (radio and such). it is presently at the dealership for the second time as they were not able to define the source of the problem upon initial inspection. *nm
2006 jeep commander stalls at low speeds. this includes pulling out into busy intersections and other traffic areas. the car just stops producing power and shuts off. it restarts just fine. *nm
Re: pe07-009 -- 2006 jeep commander 4.7l v8 -- automatic stalled every time backed out of garage and on other slight inclines at slow speeds. had the car for 6 days on a rental from enterprise. investigator chris lash may want to query enterprise about the performance of the commanders in their fleet -- quick way to capture feedback on a large number of cars. moreover, enterprise seems to know there is a problem because they are very willing to sell these cars out of the fleet program well in advance of the vehicle meeting minimum mileage limits usually observed. we were considering buying a car from them until we discovered on the web-blogs that many customers have experienced similar stalling incidents. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 25 mph, the vehicle stalled, nearly causing an accident. the service dealer was contacted, but could not duplicate the problem to correct the issue.
i purchased a 2006 jeep commander last year. i have had the following items replaced on my jeep front passenger interior door panel. strange noise coming from my car that sounded like playing cards in bike tires ended with replacing front axel ring and pinion. car kept popping out of gear the entire gear shift was replaced. my passenger window had to be fixed it kept sticking halfway up. i had a problem where my car kept stalling. i was told the first time that no error appears on the computer and jeep knew of no issue with cars stalling so maybe it was bad gas. it died several more times and finally they did replace a part inside the idol. i also had an issue where my headlights kept turning off as i drove or would flash on and off. they replaced the headlight switch. i have had the rubber stripping from my back driver side window come off and now it is occurring on the passenger side. from the beginning i have told them i do not feel my transmission is working properly that it shifts hard and when i shift from reverse to drive there is a big hesitation. i have been told no error is appearing on computer and that jeep as usual has no known issues so they had no suggestions. once again they thought it was a gas issue moving from winter to summer blend. the last time i had it in when it was stalling i told them it the transmission was still hesitating and would make a pop noise at times then it would go. it is still occurring and at times the car acts like it might not shift into drive. i am satisfied with how my dealership is working with me they are doing their best to help me. i blame jeep/chrysler all you have to do is search the web to see that there are so many others just like me with the exact same issue. they need to recall these cars now and if they can not find the problem then replace them for us. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled intermittently without warning. it was maneuvered off the road and restarted immediately each time. the vehicle was driven to the dealer on several occasions, however the problem could not be duplicated. updated 11/30/2006 - *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle randomly stalls. after being parked for a few hours, the vehicle starts but then shuts off when the contact comes to a stop. on one occasion, the vehicle shut off and failed to restart for fifteen minutes. the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. the current mileage is 21,000 and failure mileage was 10,000.
While driving in stop and go traffic my commander shuts off. it also stalls at times without shutting off. the esp light also comes on when i first turn on the vehicle on in park. i turned into the dealer and they could not duplicate the problem, and were no help in trying to diagnose the issue. *nm
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle would stall without warning. the manufacturer was contacted, but denied any assistance with repairs to the defect. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 8,000 and the current mileage was 26,800.
(1) car is off, but air conditioner, or blower, is turned on (2) car starts, engine light, or gas gauge doesn't come on, it starts, you drive a bit, it makes noise(s) then stalls (3) turned car off after it rolls to a stop. when i turn the air conditioner, or blower to the off position i seem to not have as many stalls, if not any. when the dealership looks at it when the engine light is off they cannot see any error codes. when the engine light is on who is near a dealer to see the freaking' error codes?!?!?! *jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle is stalling and the engine shuts off while driving 10 to 20 mph. the dealer kept the car one or two days and was unable to determine the cause of failure. the vehicle is still under warranty. the current mileage is 30,000 and failure mileage was 1,000. updated 02-01-08. *kb
2006 jeep commander - purchased new in 02/2006....vehicle continues to stall (motor die completely) when driving at slow speeds, ie pulling out from red lights or turning into driveways, etc. i have reported to dealership several times without any luck, called today but they said they do not know what it is and until jeep/chrysler lets them know how to fix it there is nothing they can do. this is very dangerous and someone is going to get hurt or killed by this vehicle. *nm
Tl*- the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at 15 mph and approaching a stop sign the vehicle lost power. after attempting to accelerate and move forward the vehicle stalled intermittently. the failure mileage was 6,000. the current mileage was 14446. the failure occurred 7 times.*ak
Engine stalled with no warning while decelerating on a residential street. put vehicle in park and it restarted with no problem. *nm
I was driving my 2006 jeep commander 4x4 4.7l during a thunderstorm and drove through about a foot to a foot and a half of water and wound up blowing my engine. other suvs in the area made it through the water with no problem but mine died in the water. i was told that the air intake on the vehicle is low, just below the front bumper. this is a "trail rated" vehicle which is boasted to perform well in "water fording". chrysler refuses to cover under warranty, stating the damage to my vehicle was not due to mechanical defect, that it was my fault for driving through water and the vehicle was not driven as intended. if this is the case jeep should never have "trail rated" this vehicle. it may not have been mechanical defect, but it sure is design defect. *nm
Truck stalled 4 times twice at medium speeds with my wife and son in vehicle. dealer could find nothing wrong at time. happened again last week then happened yesterday twice with my wife driving out of state in the left lane doing 65 mph boom it just shut down couldn't even be started in neutral she had to go into the median strip stop put the vehicle in park and start it . then 15 minutes later the same thing . the car is now at the dealer and so far told me they can find nothing wrong at this time. *jb
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning on several occasions. it restarted immediately and was driven to the dealer on two separate occasions where the problem could not be duplicated.
I have a 2006 jeep commander that i purchased in sept. 2006 since i have owned the car 2 times the engine has shut off while driving on the lie interstate 495 at speeds over 50mph. a very dangerous situation... *tr
Driving on highway traffic came to almost a complete stop and engine stalled. put vehicle in park keyed off then restarted. this is the second time the engine has stalled while driving. service department indicates nothing will be done if problem can not be duplicated. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the check engine light illuminated. the computer board was replaced. the vehicle then began to shut off without warning, but was able to be restarted. the chrysler dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. the contact stated that the vehicle was flooded out during a heavy rainstorm. the seals were replaced. the vehicle has been at the dealer for over a month. the purchase date was unknown. the current mileage is 13,000 and failure mileage was 1,200.
While driving at highway speed (60 mph) the entire vehicle stalled out/shut down. we lost all power in the vehicle. we had to stop the vehicle in the middle of the road and re-start the ignition. this has happened 3 times in the 2 months we have had the vehicle. the dealership is looking at the vehicle next week 9/22/06. we have also had a wind leak in the drivers side window and after 2 failed attempts to fix the problem they still cannot offer a solution. will look at again next week. *jb
Engine stalled while starting to driving into a parking space. was able to immediately restart vehicle and move out of the traffic lane and fully into the parking spot. service department indicated that they would not do anything unless they were able to replicate the problem on a short test drive. *nm
I took my 2006 jeep commander to my local dealer where i originally purchased it to get the stalling problem fixed. five days later the service manager said that the problem was now solved (august 24,2007) finally. the service department said they put in a new program that would fix the jeep from just losing power. august 25 saturday morning at 8:13 while at an intersection the jeep just died again. another problem is the windshield breaking easily. i believe the problem with the breaking windshield could be related to the inproper fitting of the windshield which results in a loud noise being heard inside the vehicle. the dealership said they won't fix the seal problem because my jeep has two cracks on it. i said "if you had fixed the windshield seal problem the first 3 times i brought it in we wouldn't have this problem'. no problems have yet to be solved. ancira dealership in san antonio,tx. many jeep owners are purchasing multiple windshields at $385 a pop. the dealer tried to say it's just me until i pointed out all the other complaints in writing with all different vin numbers and even showed her the rental car (jeep commander) which also had a cracked windshield. she's convinced too. *tr
Was driving down the road going about 50 mph when the car just shut off!!!! took it in and the dealer couldn't find anything wrong we are taking it into the dealer tomorrow. *nm
Brand new 2006 jeep commander 3 weeks old. i was getting off the express way on a curve and my vehicle shut off and steering locked up almost drove off the road with my wife and kids and this has happened 3 times already, its a risk to my family. i think something should be done about this issue, i did my research and i not the only one with this same problem. i have taken the jeep to the dealer and i was told they can not duplicate the problem so i can not be fixed. help! *jb
On three occasions (july 22, aug. 2, august 14) my 2006 jeep commander has stalled while i was driving. these incidents all occurred while i was slowing to a stop. on two of the occasion i was slowing to a stop on an incline. when the incident occurs the power steering shuts off and the engine stops. the automobile restarts after the transmission is put in park. the dealer indicates that the on-board computer detects no failures and that they were unable to replicate the incident. *nm
Jeep commander stalls at stop signs. *jb
My wife and i purchased a new 2006 jeep commander lt with a 5.7 liter v8 on july 24, 2006. four days later we went on a road trip from washington dc to boston, ma. just outside new york city, the commander stalled (went dead, no power brakes, steering) in rush hour traffic. scared us both. managed to get to the side of the road. put it in park and turned the ignition and started the commander and continued driving. the commander had less than 800 miles on it. we called the dealer. they said to bring it in when we got back. the next day on our way back home we stopped in a jeep dealership in mystic conn. they ran a diagnostic and came up with 2 codes p1684 and p0884. they cleared the history, tested again and found nothing. we took it in to the dealership on monday july 31. they said that they could not duplicate the problem. the car stalled again on august 15th, 2006. the commander now has 1350 miles and is back in the shop and the dealership doesn't know what the problem is. we called daimler chrysler customer service to lodge a compliant, the customer service advisor said that he had not ever heard that there was a stalling problem with the 2006 commanders. my wife is afraid that the commander will stall again and cause a serious accident and kill someone including us. we believe there is a serious problem with this car and others according to others on jeepforum.com. *nm
1st occurrence of the stalling/dying: 7/23/06. vehicle was moving at a slow speed making a right hand turn. the vehicle lost power (no response when pushing on the gas pedal and the power steering also failed). driver had to put the vehicle into park from drive, turn the key to the off position and then back to the start position. the 2nd occurrence was on 8/9/06 12:30 pm. at a stoplight on a hill waiting to turn left. the light turned, the car in front of her accelerated and when driver took her foot off of the brake to apply the gas and the car began to roll backwards. after this occurrence, driver called the dealership and spoke with a svc advisor. driver described the symptoms and they said they had heard of this happening on some other commanders and that they knew the part that typically fixed it. driver made appt to bring in for service. vehicle dropped off 8/10/06. call from svc dept. 8/11/2006 and stated tech tested found a bad map sensor. they replaced the sensor and said the problem should be resolved. the 3rd occurrence happened on 8/15/06 7:40 am. driver was stopped waiting for traffic to clear to make a right turn onto highway 212 from 222nd drive. at this point, driver called dealership and asked to speak with a service adviser and said she would be bringing the vehicle back in as it wasn't fixed. the 4th occurrence happened 8/15/06 5:50 pm while the vehicle was in motion on highway 217 driving to the northwest jeep dealership. driver was in slow rush hour traffic- 5-10 ph. depressed the gas pedal to accelerate to keep up with traffic and the car just continued to coast with no acceleration. she had to put the vehicle in park, turn the key to the off position, start the car again and then stop on the highway to put car back into drive. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the vehicle has stalled while driving 25 or 60 mph. there were no warning lights before the failure occurred. the contact stated that the failure could not be duplicated when taken to the dealership again on dec 17, 2007. the current mileage was 20,200 and failure mileage was 1. updated 03-05-08 *bf
Vehicle completely stalls and shuts down while driving...no matter what speed. it happened to me at 45 mph as well as 25 mph. when this happens there also is no steering.....almost got into a serious car accident due to this repeated problem. have taken to get serviced and they can not find anything wrong. *jb
Jeep commander (2006) has experienced numerous engine stalls in which vehicle completely cuts off resulting in no steering capability. this problem has occurred on six different occasions with the most recent being my jeep stalled while entering a busy road and i was almost hit by another vehicle. *tr
Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle stalled unexpectedly after approaching a stop sign on 06/20/06. the contact depressed the accelerator which made the vehicle leap forward, then stall out. the 2nd incident also occurred during attempted acceleration. on 07/13/06 the vehicle stalled unexpectedly while cruising 55 mph on a dry and flat road surface. there were no warnings prior to the three incidents. the contact pulled over and contacted the dealer. the engine restarted with no delay after all 3 incidents. the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 07/13/06 who could not duplicate the problem. the dealer has attempted to repair the vehicle 3 times but could not determine the cause of the problem. the vehicle was equipped with an automatic transmission.
Leased a 2006 chrsyler jeep commander brand new off the car lot to experience stalling multiple times approximately 2-3 months from the beginning of my lease. stalling occurred over 12x. i took the car in for servicing more than 4 times to be told that the car's computer was not registering the problem. then, i filed under the florida state lemon law to receive not action. presently, i have been in litigation vs. chrysler, under the warranty act, since to no avail. *tr
I have purchased a 2006 jeep commander. it has 6000 miles on it. at 4200 miles it started stalling for no apparent reason. it has done it in stop and go traffic and has done it when i was traveling at 35 mph. other jeep commander owners are experiencing the same problem. see jeep commander thread at edmunds.com. to date dealers have not been able to diagnose the problem. stalling in traffic presents a very serious safety problem. *jb
The car goes completely dead while being driven. electrical, steering, brakes, everything goes out. the car is moving when this happens. it has never quit running while stopped, which would not be as dangerous. have to struggle to control the car and bring it to a stop, while traffic is coming at me from all sides. when i put it in park and start it up, it runs fine. this has happened 9 times in less than a year. it's potentially deadly to the driver and passengers in the car, and any other cars or pedestrians in the vicinity. i've complained many times but the service dept. discouraged me from bringing it in since it didn't happen every time i drove the car, but finally got so bad i took it in. two times they could not find out what the problem is. now the car has a monitor hooked up to it to record any fault codes. however, i will not drive the car. it is parked in the driveway and i am driving my daughter's car. we have filed a lemon law complaint and will pursue vigorously for the car to be repurchased so i can buy a different car that doesn't put me and my family in harm's way.
Since the first few months that i owned this 2006 jeep commander it has randomly shut down while i am driving. i have noticed that it happens more often in the summer. it has been taken in and had pcm reprogramming, parts replaced, and other work. at the time we purchased it my husband was the gm at the dealership. the tech's tried everything. since then the dealership has switched to another automotive group. i have contacted several jeep service departments and many say there is nothing they can do. they are aware of the problem, but have no solutions other than what has already been done. i drive on highways with my two children often and several times it has cut off when speed limits where 65+ mph. i do not want to pass this problem along to another owner. i managed service departments for years and know how to react to problems, but i am concerned that jeep has done nothing to fix this. i know of several other owners who purchased vehicles at the same time who had the same problem. many have been traded in and now new owners are having to deal with this dangerous condition. *tr
When making hard turns my 2006 jeep commander will occasionally try to stall. pressing the gas pedal down slowly, the engine acts like it is trying to stall, and speed does not increase. my example & definition of a hard turn: you're a car or two from a red light. light turns green, you accelerate 20 feet or so and make a 90 degree turn. happens on average at least once a month. dealer says they "are aware of problems, but have no fix from jeep". have heard this for a year. *tr
Vehicle, jeep commander, 2006 traveling at 70 mph on interstate had an instantaneous total loss of power, engine shut down, all gauges went to zero, lost all electrical power, lost power steering control, and power brakes, vehicle veered to the left across lane of traffic and came to a stop in the median. this was a near-miss i don't know which component failed. *jb updated 05/04/06
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving at any speed, the vehicle stalls in the middle of the road. the steering wheel locks up and the power steering fails. the contact stated that the steering becomes very difficult and would not move at all on occasion. the failure has been occurring since the vehicle was purchased in 2006. the vehicle has been taken to the dealer numerous times, but they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle is currently at the dealer and they will replace the egr valve to see if this will correct the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 50,000.
Took new car in for the first oil change. drove 30+ miles and the engine disintegrated requiring a total engine replacement. dealer denies any wrongdoing and blames it on a manufacturing defect from chrysler. this is a new jeep commander 4.7l 2006 vehicle. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. when driving uphill at various speeds, the engine shutters and stalls. the contact stated that the vehicle loses power and then restarts on its own. there is an open investigation (# ea07007) regarding this failure. the current mileage is 16,500 and failure mileage was 120.

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while stopped or idling he noticed the lights on the dashboard would dim and the engine would act as if it were going to stall. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. he replaced the battery himself but the failure continued to recur. while driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was pulled over and after repeated attempts he was able to get it to start. the vehicle then operated as normal. it was not taken to be examined for the cause of failure and was not repaired. the failure mileage was 10 and the current mileage was 39,848.
My 2006 commander with 40,000 miles has had the following problems since it came off the lot. the vehicle stalls and i obviously lose power and steering but there are no error messages in the computer, the 4wd does not engage - the warning light for that comes on but there's no error message in the computer. the window's roll up and down incorrectly - the gasket on the exhaust manifold has been replaced and the kicker of all problems is when the vehicle goes through a minor puddle of water or the automatic car wash the steering wheel locks completely until the water is gone - try driving that in the rain - jeep was finally able to duplicate that problem by putting a garden hose under the car and squirting water on the underside of the vehicle - this problem apparently cannot be fixed and they can't believe that no other jeep owner's aren't throwing fits. so much for the lemon law - the steering problem wasn't taken seriously by the previous jeep dealers -i went to a different dealer altogether however, it's too late. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the vehicle constantly stalls and all of the instrument panel lights flash. the vehicle shuts off without prior notice. occasionally, the vehicle shuts off while idling at a stop sign or pulling into a parking space. the dealer kept the vehicle for several days, but was unable to duplicate the failure. the current mileage was 29,000 and failure mileage was 10,000.
