We have classified the 173 complaints from 2006 Jeep Commander about ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING into the following categories.
Problems began 1 day after commander went in to dealer for the regular 3,000mile oil change, that car was returned to me after that oil change, as 'good to go'; w/in 24 hours of that oil change, the commander would not start and required a new starter (30k miles). after the starter was replaced, the commander was stalling if - in the middle of a slight incline it had to brake and then resume - at the resume it would stall. also, after starter replaced dashboard lights blinking; transmission cooler lines leaking, power steering line from pump to cooler leaking, and front and back brake rotors had to be replaced (42k miles) 60k miles, the cruise control turns on by itself and the rear park assist turns off by itself; the water leak into front passenger well. speaking with custom relations at chrysler corporate regarding cruise control, rear assist and water leak problems they told me that they were not aware of these being a problem for most commander customers; however, chrysler jeep is aware of these problems as evidenced by the technical service bulletins published on them yet chrysler jeep does not issue a recall/take fiscal responsibility for their manufacturer defects. more: chrysler jeep expects me to pay them to diagnose the problems so that then so long as i have paid a dealer to repair them they will consider (not necessarily approve; in the past they have in fact denied me reimbusement to fix these problems for which they have technical service bulletins on) refunding me total or partial cost of repairs. more: i was only informed of a safety recall regarding ebc module (brake) when i called in last week (12/2011) regarding the water leak & cruise control problem. making this more poignant, the reason for this recall - that i was not notified about when it was first issued- is a brake issue that i had detailed to chrysler jeep in 2009! *tr
I own a 2006 jeep commander sport. it has stalled on me approximately 4 times. most recently today it stalled after backing out of my driveway into the street. i have had it in for service in which i believe the map sensor was replaced. this did not fix the issue. i have read numerous issues with this by other commander owners and thought i would file a incident report as well. *tr

Driving, turning right into parking spot and car just died, engine just stopped. turned key and started again. not sure if had to do with power steering because i had it turned tight or engine stall..which i have seen reported. *tr
Just bought 2006 jeep commander (3.7l v6 4x4) used with 14k miles, clean car fax report within first 36 hours of ownership speed sensor went out resulting in service approximately 2 weeks after ownership i stalled with my 8 and a half month pregnant wife on the interstate. we just had it towed to the dealership and am questioning whether or not this vehicle will be safe for my wife and child. waiting until something disastrous happens to do something is not a good policy and feel that is the only thing that will cause the government to do something. *tr
2006 jeep commander stalled while at a stop and during turn. loss of steering and brakes for about 5 seconds. cannot accelerate. this has happened several times. dealer claims there is nothing wrong. contacted chrysler and they contacted dealership. waiting to hear from dealership. *tr

My 2006 jeep commander 75th anniversary ed 6cl randomly stalls and loses all power while driving. this has happened to me several times while making left hand turns. most recently it happened to my wife while she was driving my 2 daughters on a busy highway. there is no warning and all power is lost while driving including power steering... the dealership has said they don't know what the problem is and can't fins anything wrong. it's time to sell the beast before my kids get hurt. *tr
Reference complaints 10244597, 10247128. today, driving in the rain, lights dimmed and car hesitated, eventually stalling while in motion. while we were at a stop, the car again stalled and took several tries to restart. i no longer drive with the children in the car, and have not since the previous incident at 61k. i have tried contacting jeep through my dealer, with no response. today i sent an email via their website, however, i am not hopeful of any response. this will be the final time i will file a complaint, as i have called the bank and told them to come and get the car. i can only hope that the person who considers purchasing my car, as i am sure another unscrupulous salesman will put the car up for sale, does his or her research and finds the complaints i have filed here and with the pa attorney general's office. *tr
On several occasions the jeep's engine has completely shut off while driving down the highway. the jeep has been taken to several dealerships but no problems have shown up on the computer diagnostics, so service techs won't touch it. this is very unsafe, chrysler will do nothing with the v6 only the v8.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 30 mph, the instrument panel warning indicators suddenly began flashing and then completely dimmed. afterwards, the engine completely shut off as well. the weather conditions were not a factor. the contact stated that the vehicle restarted immediately. the engine light illuminated but then shut off once he arrived at the dealer. the dealer could not find any failures. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 18,000.
I was driving home from work one evenings and all my lights inside on the dash and the outside headlights flicker and flash and then turn off all at once . this is very dangerous i could be hit by another car because they cant see my black suv on the road, or i could crash because i cant see what's in front of me. i took it to the dealer and was told i need a new headlight switch we will see if it works. *tr
Our 06 jeep commander has been a nightmare since the day we purchased it used with 14k miles on it in 3/07. we continue to have problems with the dash lights coming on, stalling just today 7/22- the lights lit up and the air conditioner quit working!!! no fan no blower... nothing. it has been brought in for the recall for this but it keeps happening. oh and did i mention that autopark jeep in cary, nc sold me a lemon/buyback.... they gave me the carfax report after 30 visits to the service dept.... fool me once, fool me twice... i am hoping that jeep will buy it back again for this complete lemon!! i know have 37k on it and the service dept was talking that they did not know if jeep would cover the work.... they can keep it.. *tr
06' jeep commander stalls when completely stopped, when making uturns, and two times when driving at approximately 25-30mph. i have had this complaint for quite sometime and have taken it to the dealership twice, with them brushing it off as if nothing is wrong with the vehicle. if this is not fixed peoples lives on in danger not only the passengers in the vehicles, but surrounding motorist. *tr

I bought my 2006 jeep commander in 2006 as a demo with 18,000 miles on it. i really didn't drive it that much as you can tell by the mileage on it and it has only had three oil changes. when it reached about 20,000 miles it stalled on my way to work and i called and spoke to a tech where i bought the car, he told me that i had probably gotten some bad gas. then two weeks ago it stalled again and the engine light came on for a day, then it went out. it came on again and stayed on and it continued to stay on, and "service park assist" displayed on the dash. the dealer where we bought the car is 20 miles from where we live so i made an appointment with a dodge dealer about 3 miles from my home. on monday july 7th when driving there for the appointment, i was making a left hand turn and it shut down, no brakes, no steering, no lights on the dash, nothing. i got to the side of the road and it re-started after 3 tries. i made it to the dealer and they called my today and said it was ready and they had to install a tcm module. i went to pick it up, and on the way home, it did the same thing again, the only thing it didn't do was display the engine light, but the stalling and the "service park assist" came back on. i took it back to them and they hooked it back up to the computer and told me i needed to find a way home and they would call me tomorrow. they didn't know what was wrong with it yet. *tr
I purchased my 2006 jeep commander 3.7 4x4 in 2007 as a demo. it had 18,000 miles on it when i bought it and now is has 28,000. i have not driven it very much as you can tell by the mileage, and it has only had to have two oil changes (every 3,000 miles) and is almost due for another. i have been having issues for three weeks now, 1. first it stalled in traffic when i was doing about 30 mph. 2. the engine light came on and stayed for a day, went off and came back on two days later and has been on since. 3. when driving, the car will shift really hard into second gear for no reason. on the 3rd of july it started doing all sorts of weird shifts and stalls, i made an appointment with the dealer tomorrow, and i have not driven it since the 3rd of july because i am worried about breaking something. *tr
2006 jeep commander driving at 50+ mph on a straight highway engine died. power brakes and steering was lost as well as all instrument panel function. the jeep recall fix for engine stalling had been put on within the last month. this was the second time this has happened at high speed driving, the first time was about a year ago. in both cases the engine can not be restarted until the vehicle comes to a complete stop and put into park. *tr
Multiple incidents of stalling in traffic while vehicle is idling. most recent stall included loss of power steering and power brakes. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated the vehicle was taken to the dealer on june 6, 2008 to have campaign id number 08v203000 power train: automatic transmission: control module (tcm, pcm) recall repair performed. the repair did not correct the failure. while driving 45 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to coast off of the road and apply the emergency brake. the failure occurred several times. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer repeatedly for the failure. the dealer reprogrammed the computer, replaced the ignition switch, and the map sensor was replaced twice. the repair did not correct the failure and the vehicle continued to stall without warning. the manufacturers report 20824940 was filed and they stated they would like the opportunity to repair the vehicle, but would not replace the vehicle or give the contact her money back. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 51,493 and the current mileage was 115,000.
2006 jeep commander. the car stalls usually when turning, however it has done it at a red light. car is powerless (brakes, steering, etc) and continues moving until the key is pulled out of the ignition. it has occurred at least 10 times, most of which have been turning at lights with oncoming traffic. luckily, accidents were avoided. nothing was done to correct this failure, after being reported repeatedly to henderson chrysler jeep. the dealership claims they cannot "duplicate" the problem; *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact was able to restart the engine and was able to drive home. she called the manufacturer and was informed that there were no recalls on her vehicle; however, she has seen numerous complaints on the vehicle and even an investigation for the same failure. she scheduled an appointment at the dealer for later in the week. the current and failure mileages were 15,300. updated 5/30/08 *cn
Problem with my 2006 jeep commander engine stalling. this has happened on 3-4 different occasions and happened again today in a parking lot. the engine just completely shuts down and nothing works, including the steering. each time it has happened i have been going at a slow speed. i have taken it to my dealer who says they can't find anything wrong with it ( bob schwartz-bunker hill indiana).i am going to take it in again to see if they can possibly fix this problem now since there have been other commander owners complain. i am really afraid to drive this vehicle now especially with my kids. if jeep is aware of these complaints, they need to issue a recall on the 2006 & 2007 models also instead of just the 2008. if this would happen at highway speeds, it would have possibly been deadly!!! please help. *tr
2007 jeep commander. six months after the purchase of a new jeep commander the jeep started losing power and stalling. it didn't matter what speed the jeep was going. it has stalled and lost power and all electronics pulling into traffic and cruising down the interstate. the jeep was towed to the dealership where the junction box was replaced. numerous tests were completed but no definitive reason was found for the stalling. i was told the jeep was fixed. the jeep has since stalled 3 more times, one time with when my wife was driving and my daughters ages 4 and 7 were onboard. this time, they were nearly hit by a tractor trailer pulling out of the local grocery store. the jeep had to be towed back to the dealership where it sits right now. the service department seems to think it's the ignition switch but i know better. i'm seeking a lease buy out by chrysler and plan to sue if they do not take the jeep back. this jeep is going to kill someone and i will not let it be my wife or children. *tr
My 2006 jeep commander has stalled with me several times. the scariest when i was turning into a middle school driveway and it just shut off leaving me without any brakes or steering. it has also stalled several times at the end of my driveway. but the worse problem is for the second time in 4 months it will not start. last time it was a tip failure. something was wrong with the start up module. this was in jan. 23 08. now, april 21, 2008 it has done it again. last time it was still under warranty and i have called a tow truck this time too. it is still under warranty but with only 3000 miles to go. i am worried this part will continue to break. i am afraid i will be alone and the car will not crank somewhere. this is not safe. you must be able to depend on your vehicle starting. the last time it was repaired with part number 4692084-ab b;lci non 8015009 whatever all that means. it was run without any problems since that repair until today. fortunately it broke down in my carport. *tr
Engine will turn off while driving, all power goes out and you cannot steer the car. *tr
I bought my 2006 jeep commander 4x4 in november 2007. since buying it, the vehicle has stalled out on my approximately 8 times while driving it. the whole vehicle shuts off. i can't steer it or do anything. this could get me and my family killed. when i called about the problem, the man i spoke to acted as if i was making this up and told me nothing could be done. *tr
2006 jeep commander stalling while driving 50-55 miles per hour, stalling at traffic lights, stalling when applying brake to slow down in traffic..this is very dangerous as i have three children who ride in this vehicle. i need a dependable vehicle and i will not put my kids in this vehicle. please help before someone gets hurt. bought on 3/28/08. had for one week and stalled 4 times. brought back to dealer, could not find problem. stalled two more times while driving at speed. took back 4/9/08..called 4/18/08 they are aware of problem want us to call chrysler. *tr
Jeep commander shuts off power while driving causing total loss of power...its gone on at fast speeds, slow speeds, while cruise control was engaged, not when it was engaged, night time, and day time...it seems to happen every 1,000 miles...i am now at 36,000 miles. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving approximately 62 mph, all of the warning light indicators illuminated on the instrument panel and then the engine stalled. the contact shifted the gear into neutral and restarted the vehicle . he then shifted into drive andthe vehicle was able to continue normally. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. the technician was unable to locate the problem. the identical failures occurred on two separate occasions, however there was a burning odor. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage was 20,000.
I own a 2006 jeep commander 4x4 v8. i have had a ton of problems with it. it makes a terrible wind noise coming from the windshield, my ac sounds like a freight train when switch to or from ac, and the most dangerous is that my car dies while turning on a regular basis. i have taken the car in and the dealer tells me they can not find the problem. i am so annoyed with my death trap. i drive around my 3 kids, my husband, and myself. i fear for ours lives being in this car. it is unsafe and will end up killing someone one day. *tr
Engine shaking violently, consistently stalling at low rpms. slow to start, have to turn key for several seconds. *tr
My automobile has stalled twice within the last week, usually while going under 10 mph. during the stall i lose control momentarily as my auto 'lurches,' forward 1-2 feet. *tr
There is a 4/07 nhtsa investigation into 2006-7 jeep commanders' intermittent and persistent engine stalling problems - supposedly in response to 76 complaints. nhtsa really needs to read its own complaints about this problem, which can be found not only in the commander line but also in 2005-2008 jeep grand cherokees. there are hundreds of complaints on the internet (jeepforum.com, usenet news, etc.) about jeep vehicles stalling, besides the commander. i fear that even if chrysler is finally forced to address the problem under this investigation, they will simply point to the "2006-7 commanders" portion of the settlement and completely ignore the exact same problem in other years and other models of jeep. they cannot be allowed to continue waving off their customers, who paid for their products in good faith, and now are not being supported. they need to be forced to acknowledge and rectify this very wide spread problem immediately, before their negligence gets someone killed. unfortunately, we lowly consumers have little to no power over a giant like chrysler. that is why we need organizations like the nhtsa to help us. nhtsa, please review your other complaints under the jeep brand and expand your investigation as appropriate. anyone else with a jeep that keeps stalling, please continue to post your complaints here and anywhere else you can find. these stalling problems need to be fixed, and chrysler needs to take ownership of this dangerous issue immediately. *tr
The interior electrical lighting systems often goes out while driving in below freezing temperatures. this includes all speedometer, tachometer, and dash lights for all controls. this has been a problem since i purchased the vehicle new in february 2007. after five years, the led lights illuminating the switches for the fan speed, temperature control, and heated seats. i reported this under warranty but now i am told i am responsible for repair. the dealership cannot find the electrical fault. the led switch bulbs cannot simply be replaced as the entire unit for each control must be replaced. the engine was making a pinging sound and the dealership diagnosed it wrong 3 times. this should have been repaired under warranty when first reported. many months later after warranty lapsed the dealership's corrective fix was replacing one side of the engine's hydraulic lifters. this made the problem a bit better but did not resolve it. *tr
My vehicle's engine unexpectedly shuts off while i'm driving. the first time it happened while i was driving over 50 mph, that scared me because i lost my power steering and it was hard to control my vehicle. the other thing is that once it shuts off, the vehicle won't let you restart on the fly, you have to come to a complete stop, put the vehicle in park and restart your engine. that can be potentially dangerous on the freeway. *tr
Jeep commander. this is the 2nd report i have made. on january 24, 2008 my jeep commander had another engine stall. the third time i the last 5 months this has happened. i cannot locate my original complaint to you, but i wanted to file this again anyway. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving below 20 mph, the vehicle stalled in traffic. the failure occurs intermittently and the dealer stated that it could not be duplicated. the failure has occurred three times. the failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage is 36,000. updated 03/25/08. *lj
At low speeds my 2006 jeep commander stalls, steering is lost and on inclines even rolls backwards. this began happening in july 2007 with approximately 30,000 miles. it has happened no less than 20 times since. the dealership can not replicate the problem and no codes are present to detect the issue. to rectify the stalling, i must turn off the car and turn it back on. it restarts immediately. *tr
My jeep stalls without warning - loss of power steering and other power. this tends to happen mid-turn and has happened several times since i purchased the vehicle. although we have complained to technicians/service managers at dealership, no corrective action has been taken as they say the "computers don't indicate a stall." most recent incident date reported below. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled twice on the highway. there were no warning indicators prior to the failure. the contact stated that this was a safety hazard because the failure could cause a serious crash. in addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was included in a recall and was remedied; however, the failure continued. the vehicle is currently in the repair shop, but the mechanic cannot identify the cause of the failure. the vin, recall number, and mileages were unknown.
My husband and myself own a 2006 jeep commander. we have been experiancing shifting problems which progressed to electrical problems which have unfortunately progressed to one, complete engine or system failure. i lost all electrical, my engine, everything!!!! it was a complete stall out that took 4 times of trying to start it before it worked again. i have had it into the dealer repeatedly with different parts replaced each time, but it's still a mystery as to what is causing this dangerous problem. *tr
Stalling while driving; loss of all lighting systems and power. *tr
tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that he heard a loud screaming sound. upon inspection, he concluded that the timing belts caused that failure. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they rerouted the timing belts and the blower motor. approximately two days while driving 60 mph, the vehicle vibrated excessively. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they performed a wheel alignment. one week later he heard the screaming noise again. the dealer repaired the serpentine belt however two weeks later he heard a loud noise coming from the engine. the dealer stated the compressor caused the failure. as of january 7, 2008, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. the failure mileage was 35,121 and current mileage was 36,120.
Tl*the contact owns a 2006 jeep commander. the contact stated that the vehicle sporadically loses power and then immediately stalls. after waiting for a period of time, the vehicle would restart and the engine light would consistently remain illuminated on the instrument control panel. he took the vehicle to the dealer and it was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 08v203000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)). immediately after the repair, the failure became progressively worse. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and is in the process of having the fuel system:gasoline delivery pump replaced. the failure mileage was 18,000 and current mileage was 26,000.
My 2006 jeep commander stalls for no reason. some times low idle other times and 60 mph. three times my wife has run off the road because of the stalling and once it died while crossing traffic. it has stalled over fifty times, dealer cannot reproduce the event and the computer records no coded. *tr
November 24 evening leaving fuji (children in car) november 30 morning on way to work ? hit mailbox (baby in car) december 5 morning on way to work ? dies turning out of subdivision and stalls in middle of street (baby in car) there was one other instance when i had all kids with me?it was prior to nov 24 but i do not recall the actual date all of the instances the engine stalled, the lights (when on) went out, i lost the ability to steer and brake as well. the mph ranged from 4 or 5 mph to 35 mph. there were times when it was warm and days that it was cold. nothing seemed to standout as a possible "trigger" i took car to dealer after the november 24th incident. tony in the service department said there was really nothing that they could do unless it was a problem they could "make happen" when they drove it. a few days later i wrecked into a mailbox when my jeep stalled and i lost steering and braking capability....i am lucky it was not head on with a large truck or a tree. *tr
