Problems with 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 STEERING

On average, the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 58 418 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

When truck is at low rpm (usually turning into parking spot slowly) truck will shut off. its pulling to much power from cpu or alternator and killing truck. this is a safety issue.

During normal driving in town and on highway, stabillitrak deactivates, power steering assist deactivates and the steering becomes very difficult, airbags deactivate, turn signals become inoperable, radio shuts off, air conditioning shuts off. this happens while at speed on the highway and at slow speeds. it is especially dangerous when making slow turns as the power steering gives out and the truck instantly becomes nearly uncontrollable (uncontrollable for my wife) in the middle of the turn. i have taken the truck to the dealership and they said nothing is wrong and the best they could do was perform a service bulletin. issue was not corrected. i found that there was a new bulletin that had a fix for the g218 ground. i cut back the sound deadening from the ground, yet that did not fix the issue either. the truck has done this dozens of times and is incredibly unsafe to drive. how can losing steering, airbags, stability control, turn signals, etc. not be a safety concern?

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that while her husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the power assist ceased while the power steering assist warning light illuminated. the contact's husband stated that the steering wheel became firm and was difficult to maneuver the vehicle. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be serviced and the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. upon further investigation, the contact discovered recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v246000 (steering) which she linked to the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown.

While traveling to denver colorado, my power steering shut off at random on the interstate. i pulled over and turned my vehicle off, and it came back on. a few days later while driving in the snow, it went out permanently and i was stranded until a tow truck arrived. it took 3 days to get my truck fixed, and the whole steering system, rack and pinion, had to be replaced. it cost me over $2,500 to fix and get back home safely. i was traveling on a straight road at 75mph on i-70 west when the steering went out the first time. the second time, i was making a left turn and it went out and nearly caused a wreck.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle lost acceleration and the steering ability seized. the contact pulled over to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, and then drove home. the vehicle was taken to musson-patout automotive group (214 us 90 frontage rd, new iberia, la 70560) where it was diagnosed that the fuel injectors failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 20 mph and making a left turn, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was able to restart and all the warning indicators on the instrument panel illuminated. an appointment was scheduled with covert buick gmc (11750 research blvd, austin, tx 78759, 512-583-3411), but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 9-5466674851. no further assistance was provided. the contact stated that the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign number: 17v414000 (steering). the failure mileage was 111,000. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 5 mph and making a left turn, the steering wheel became inoperable. the contact restarted the vehicle and it jerked. there were no warning indicators illuminated, but there was an abnormal dinging noise. additionally, the air conditioner blower fan increased to high without warning. the vehicle was taken to fairground auto plaza (100 fairgrounds rd, rolla, mo 65401, (573) 364-1002), but the failure was unable to be duplicated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 60,400. *tt *tr

During normal driving in town and on highway, stabillitrak deactivated and power steering assist deactivated flashes on dash. the air conditioner and radio flash off. lose power steering. the whole truck shut off also once while reversing, went from park to reverse and shut off. this had been very dangerous, as it happened also while going 70 mph on the highway.

Vehicle has 39000 miles and rack and pinion bushings's are completely out

Slowing down to park on a street and lost steering and lights flickering, i just had recall reprogrammed &serviced 60 days ago, driver assist service lights also on and parking.i nearly crashed twice so far i need my vehicle for transportation and would like help with this immediately ,for it is a pricey luxurious vehicle.

The engine shuts off and it looses all power randomly when turning , it is noow started to shut off in traffic when lightly tapping the brakes..

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving approximately 65 mph, the service stabilitrac warning indicator illuminated, the door locks activated independently, and the power steering failed. additionally, the vehicle independently turned off and on within a few seconds. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code. the vehicle was not repaired. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 88,124.

Power steering goes out while driving making it hard to steer. very dangerous it happens out of nowhere.

Vehicle was in motion driving down the highway when complete power steering failure occurred. it was raining at the time, and this took place approximately 30 seconds after driving through a shallow puddle in my lane with the driver side tires. vehicle was immediately very difficult to steer, even at highway speed. i am a fit male with strong arms and it was almost more steering resistance than i could manage. had this occurred while turning, i doubt i would have been able to control the direction of the vehicle. even while driving in a straight line, if this had happened to a person with very much less upper body strength, they would have been in real trouble, as they would be unable to steer the vehicle safely off of the roadway. the shop diagnosed the problem as being a failed electric powered rack and pinion (steering gear). they said that this was not related to the previously issued recall on the power steering, and that it required replacement of the apparently shorted out steering gear.

While driving at low speeds the steering wheel jerks and is very difficult to turn and fails to turn and can sometimes be pulled right out of your hands while attempting to turn. when this occurs while negotiating a turn it causes the vheicle to fail the turn, turn very widely and forces the vheilce into the oncoming lane. this vehicle apparently has a recall on part of the power steering assist, but the power steering rack needs to be replaced and gmc will not cover the replacement even though it is all one unit.

While driving the vehicle is losing power in the steering wheel, prompting the stabilitrac warning light to come on. this happens while driving at any speed, while turning and while going in reverse

My electrical power steering has given out. i cant steer whatsoever. it is on recall. we fo have a local shop but it is not a gm shop. we did try working with gm and also the seller-ak sales and service to try get it fixed. they will not help me whatsoever. i love in the bush which means we have limited access. if i wanted to get this fixed i'd have to pay out of pocket over i grand to get my vehicle barged to amchorage, ak. which i dont have that kind of money. i still owe over 11 grand on my truck. i'm sol as to what to do.

Service power steering came on in dash i could not steer the truck.

Steering rack clunks when turning left at low speeds.

The vehicle 4wd system remains engaged and will not disengage. upon further investigation the system effects steering and drivability. also effects speed of the vehicle. the vehicle utilizes a code c0398 and show a message of the dash service 4wd. this is due to faulty software installed by the manufacturer. will cause damage to mechanical parts if driven on the vehicle and is a safety hazard. gm reference # issued to me when issue complaint of the out of pocket cost to update the software as required by gm to fix their operating system. my reference number is 9-5058496526. same issue resulted in 2015 gmc sierras that caused gm to issue a service bulletin #28770. software issues are not wear and tear components. gm faulty software is the responsibility of the gm as they can cause safety and damage to the mechanical parts of the vehicle.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 55 mph, the steering failed and the vehicle became difficult to steer. also, the service vehicle warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to musson patout buick gmc (214 u.s. 90 frontage rd, new iberia, la 70560, (337) 465-4161) where it was diagnosed that the steering motor pump needed to be repaired. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was 69,000.

I started my truck and a message came up that says to service power steering and i am unable to turn my wheel or drive safely. i know that this is a recall on 2014 sierra but the dealership refuses to fix mine

Takata recall driving truck down interstate and it just cutoff no steering no breaks all power shuts off. i wait till truck is stooped and try wigging key and make sure gearshift is in right position. after a few min lights come on the dash and the truck will start back up. it says in the notification area in dash let driver side window down and up again. this has happen twice and both times i was on a interstate almost hit by cars behind me. i was driving about 65 mph going straight most time it would do this if i change lanes.

Losing power steering intermittently and suddenly. wheel becoming extremely difficult/heavier to move. truck turned off.

Was driving down the highway at highway speeds rolled the passenger window up the stereo cut off the gauges cut out and the wipers wipes in one time. then a message stating stabilitrak needed to be serviced and electronic power steering was out

Stabilitrak warning comes up and then it warns about reduction in steering assist. when i am parking or driving at a low speed it is hard to turn the wheel. my truck also shuts down and comes right back on when this happens.

When driving the truck after extended periods of time (i.e. 1 hour or more) the vehicle will flash a stabilitrak warning and then power the vehicle off. this happened while my son, girlfriend and i were on a trip to florida driving 70 mph down the interstate. i took to a dealer and they informed me that the battery cables were loose. 4,000 miles the truck has done this episode again and the dealer now tells me that i need to replace the electronic rack and pinion on a truck with 65k miles with a cost of over $3k. there are numerous examples of this happening with trucks just like mine and gm isn't responsible? hard to fathom that in the 5 vehicles i have owned, not once have i had to replace a rack and pinion and the newest vehicle that i have every owned has this issue.

I was turning off of a main thoroughfare into a restaurant parking lot and lost the ability to steer my vehicle for a few seconds. the steering finally recovered so i could make the turn. i took the vehicle to gmc to repair on 9/21/2018. my steering had already had a recall in 2017 in which they did a software update. one year, 9/11/2018, later, i lost the ability to steer. the service advisor stated they had another customer in the week before with the same issue. he also stated they had received an internal memo about the issue and the fix was changing out the battery cables. they charged me over $800 for this repair. based on the information i was given about the internal memo and the other customer with the same issue, i feel this should be a recall. i contacted gmc about my concerns; the cost of the repair and the dangerous situation of losing steering. annabelle with gmc basically said there were a lot more dangerous issues reported. it seems the vehicle issue has to result in an accident or death before they will take it seriously.

My truck.was.fixed.once for the sterring and is still.cutting out its.so.bad that its shutting the hole truck down.in the.middle.of the road an.on the highway or when u go to speed up it cuts out n the streen comes tight

The truck dies at any moment. stability track system warning pops up in the little screen and the steering wheel is blocked when this happen. after these to things happens the truck shut down. sometimes, after a few minutes the truck comes back to normal. this has happened to me for like 10 times in a period of like 15 months. i have taken to the dealer like 6 times and they haven't found the problem. they have change some wires from the battery. they have reprogram the software and nothing i still have the same problem. the truck dies at any moment. all of this happen when i am driving the truck most of the times at low speed and while turning to the left or right except like two times that occurred while i was driving in the highway. the mechanics in the dealer have done all kind of diagnostic that they have but they could not duplicated the problem so the answer that i get every time is that every is fine and that they couldn't duplicated the problem.

Horrible grinding noise low speed rotating of steering wheel. sounds metal on metal grinding and clunking, dragging across ridged plate doing parking lot and backing maneuvers. took to dealership. they said had no trouble codes, but does have internal failure of drive components noted. scheduling for warranty replacement currently. metal on metal grinding crunching noise. entire steering rack needs replacement. truck only has 79877 miles. it is definitely faulty. other than that, awesome truck and love it. everything else works perfect.

When the vehicle had less than 10,000 miles i brought it to the dealer to inspect the steering because of a binding/clunking noise while turning the steering wheel at a stop or slow speed. the dealership was unable to locate the noise at that time. around 17.000 miles, the noise had gotten worse and they were able to locate it and replaced the steering box as well as the rack and pinion steering. again, a little after 30,000 miles the noise was back but intermittent. the dealership did not hear it and said the steering was fine. yesterday, with 40,000 miles, the dealership said the steering gear box needed to be replaced again as something is binding inside on the replacement steering box. gm is denying this issue yet my research shows many people with the 2014 gmc sierra have or have had this problem. the one technician even told me his steering gear box on his 2014 1500 sierra had the same problem and compley failed. my research shows that this electronic gear box was introduced in 2014 and changed for a different steering box in 2015 models. an apparent acknowledgment of the problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. the contact stated that the electronic power steering failed, which caused the steering wheel to jerk violently to the left when turning right. the dealer (wiers chevrolet cadillac gmc, 416 s halleck st, de motte, in 46310, (219) 987-5555) indicated that a software update would not provide a permanent remedy; therefore, the manufacturer approved the replacement of the electronic power steering assist. in addition, the vehicle failed to start and stalled several times without warning. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

When turning to left, you hear a "thud" in the steering rack and pinion. "thud" occurs either moving or stationary. occurs during street/highway driving. have not been off road with vehicle, so no information about occurance when off road.

While driving down the highway with my 3 year old daughter in the back seat, a warning light for my power steering comes up on my dash and immediately i lose my power steering and have to try to pull my wheel so i can stop on the side of the highway. after turning my truck off and restarting it my power steering comes back and drive it home. i call the dealership and there is a recall for my truck and i bring it in. 2 days after the dealership says they fixed the problem a get the same warning light and lose my power steering again with my daughter in the back seat. i take my truck back to the dealership and tell them my power steering went out again. not 24 hours after i get my truck back for the 2nd time my power steering goes out again driving down city street. bringing my truck in for the 3rd time for the same issue, the dealership now says i have to pay them $142.00 for them to diagnose what's wrong with my truck. why am i held responsible for an issue gm has known about since 2009?

Steering gear had loud "thud". had to replace entire rack/pinion and steering gear. malfunction occurs when moving and at rest when turning left. vehicle has never been off highway.

On making a turn at low speed, my engine has cut out completely. i had full loss of acceleration, power steering ,ac, radio. i put the truck in neutral and restart the engine to get to safety. this has occurred 3 times in the last 20 days.twice in city traffic, once on the highway, turning off for gas. the "service steering assist" light appeared. i took the truck for a full diagnostic at a local electric repair shop, for $170.00. the tech found nothing after hooking my truck to his computer. the day i retrieved my truck from the electrical shop, i stopped in walmart for groceries. my key fob would not lock or unlock my doors. i manually unlocked the truck to determine that the truck would not start at all. no panel/ interior lights, no response in ignition,no automatic unlocking, the truck was completely dead. roadside service came to tow it, and the truck was jumpstarted from his battery pack. the key fob began to work, unlocking, etc. i towed the truck home. i have vin checked my truck and there are none but i believe my vehicular failure refers to gm part 573 safety recall 17v-414 regarding the loss of eps. a secondary recall which may apply is gm# 14v26000 re steering linkages, tie rod assembly.as the "steer assist' alert was what i saw. i have the work invoice from the electrical shop, if needed.

When stationary or driving at low speeds like those in a parking lot or leaving a stop sign. there is a loud 'clunk' that can be herd and felt about 2/3-3/4 of the way to full lock. it is very repeatable and getting louder.

While driving my vehicle turns off, stability control comes on and offf on the dic also the drive assist goes off this is very dangerous then is when it looses power

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving various speeds, the steering seized and the stability warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to classic buick gmc arlington (1400 e interstate 20, arlington, tx 76018, 817-264-7782) where it was diagnosed that there was a failure with the stability of the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving various speeds, the steering wheel suddenly malfunctioned and became very difficult to turn in either direction. during the failure, the brake, abs, power steering, and traction control warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to troy allen buick(358 butler rd, kittanning, pa) where the power steering module was reprogrammed, but the failure continued. the contact indicated that the vehicle was serviced on multiple occasions for the same failure. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 4,000.

I temporarily had no control over the vehicle causing me to have an accident. while driving down a residential street approaching a stop sign intersection i merged into the center of st to pass a trashcan and in the process of returning to my correct position on the road i suddenly had no steering. panicking from the loss i pressed my brakes an attempt to bring vehicle to a stop but was unsuccessful because the tires began a slide once noticing the traction loss i proceeded to release brakes and reapply in hopes of gaining traction the brief relief from brakes caused the vehicle to regain traction and while i still have no control over steering, the vehicle jerks towards the right side of the road and the brakes being reapplied the vehicle continues to slide off pavement making contact with stop sign and telephone pole.

During driving, the stability sensors would go off and show up stating stability turned off, or power steering turned off. the voltage on vehicle would suddenly drop from 15 to 9 and then back up. this will usually turn off the interior lights and electronics. i have discussed this with other 2014 sierra and silverado owners and they all advised this was occuring on their vehicles. there is a ground wire that was not properly installed under the dash which causes high resistance material to cause electrical issues. during one of my drives to work going 60 mph, the electrical components shut off and caused the engine to stop running. i was able to pull over while coasting on no power and restart the vehicle and it would continue to go. there have been times where the steering wheel would jerk while stationary as well. after many forum discussion this all related back to the ground wire not being properly installed by the manufacturer.

Dec. 11,2017 driving under 20 mph on a local road speed limit 30mph ball joint pulled out of control arm front drivers side. front wheel fell over caused damage to tire and rim and disabled abs system by cutting wires. lucky i was not on interstate 84 going 65 mph in fishkill new york truck could have crashed with other vehicles or caused serious injury to occupants of my vehicle could have caused vehicle to roll over. dealer claimed never heard of this happening and that i must have hit something to cause the ball joint to pull out of control arm, never hit anything not even a pot hole i am the only driver of this vehicle. had to replace control arm which holds the upper ball joint which is pressed into control arm. took dealer from monday to friday to complete repairs. control arm not under warranty repairs cost 936.42. found many complaints about ball joint and control arm separating on this vehicle online. driver side front ball joint. *js

The first time i was driving down the highway and i hit the brakes and the dic said service stabilitrak and a few other things and i lost control of steering and my cruise wouldn't work for a minute the second time i was driving down the road and i gases on it and the whole truck shutoff and back on but i lost control of the steering again then i turned in my driveway and lost all steering and all power and the truck died i had to turn the key 2 or 3 times and if finally started it lost all power it reset my clock and everything on my radio and dic

Tl* the contact owns a 2014 gmc sierra 1500. while driving 5 mph, the steering wheel seized before the vehicle accelerated. the contact drove the vehicle to wilson county chevrolet buick gmc (903 s hartmann dr, lebanon, tn 37090 (615) 444-9642). the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in an unknown recall and it was repaired for free. after the remedy, the vehicle was operable, but the failure recurred in less than 24 hours. the steering wheel seized a second time and excessive force on the steering wheel was used, but the wheel would not turn. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not serviced for the second failure. the failure mileage was 34,941.

Yesterday i was driving home on the highway driving approximately 75mph when without any warning a stability steering control light flashed on the dashboard behind my steering wheel. the car immediately jolted from driving mid 70's down to an immediate 67mph. this speed limit was the last thing that flashed before my dashboard blacked out, the steering column locked and the vehicle entirely lost power while driving. seconds later my windshield wipers sporadically started moving (i did not engage the switch) and i watched the temperature go up from 70 to 80 without touching the gauge manually. the car jolted for almost 10 miles sporadically losing control intermittently and when i exited off the highway and made a left hand turn at a low speed (under 15mph) the steering completely locked and the car pulled off to the side of the road toward a curb. i gained control of the vehicle manually which was difficult but i did correct the drive path back onto the road. i pulled into the dealership at a low rate of speed and the car did the same thing as it did when i exited the highway. i'm in a loaner and the dealer has my vehicle. this vehicle was purchased used roughly 2 months ago from a registered gmc dealer with 40k miles on it. it now has roughly 44k on it. i have made 1 payment on this vehicle thus far.

2014 gmc sierra currently with 45,000 miles. vehicle spent 40+ days at dealership in 2016 for vibration while driving between 69-72 mph they could not fix during 6 different service visits. it was under 3 year/36k mile warranty at the time. began at 22,000 miles. in nov. 2017 vehicle began losing power steering at speeds under 3 mph, especially in reverse. also service stabilitrak light has come on randomly at low speeds. problem was intermittent but is now becoming an almost daily occurrance. afraid this will lead to an accident. several close calls already. radio has also turned off on its on about 5 times in the last 60 days. it will not turn back on until vehicle is re-started. related or unrelated, while driving at night and applying brake pedal i notice a 1/2 second dimming of headlights and dash lights before they return to normal brightness. battery and alternator tested fine by dealership. dealership says vehicle vin is not subject to any recalls. dealership wants me to replace power steering gear for $2,500 which they "think" might fix the problem. don't want to spend $2,500 without certainty it is the problem.

Complete loss of power steering along with speed control being disabled when a turn signal is activated. recall 17v414000 has already been completed and did not correct the problem. both of these issues occur during the same drive cycle (issues have not happened simultaneously but will both occur at some point during the same drive cycle) they seem to only happen on drive cycles that last longer than 45 minutes.

Power steering recall. i have been in touch with my nearby gmc dealer for the past 2 months attempting to get this recall dealt with and fixed. i need this recall to be resolved no later than 20 oct 17 in order for my vehicle to be shipped to my new duty station in alaska as i will be doing a pcs (permanent change of station) for the army. if it can't be resolved by then i need some type of documentation sent to me stating it can't be resolved due to gmc lacking ability to fix the problem or remove the recall from my vehicle. please email the documentation to [xxx]. very respectfully, [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb
