We have classified the 260 complaints from 2007 Ford Freestyle about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
Transmission makes a buzzin, whirring sound in park and reverse...from what i read online from many others..this noise preludes transmission failure while driving down the road...most of the time causing an emergency situation that could cause an accident with personal injury...ford is aware of the problem, or should be by the numerous complaints over the years, but has yet to owe up to the transmission failures, causing a monetary hardship for the owners of said vehicles or the almost total loss of the vehicles value. it is the responsibility of the nhtsa to investigate complaints such as these, then demand the manufacturers start the recall process to permanently repair said transmissions ( cvt ) or replace complete unit at manufacturers expense. start the job you people are paid generously to do. u tube has many videos of people telling their problems, and videos of mechanics explaining the problems

Takata recall
Driving down street. my car felt like it was resisting my giving it gas. @ warning lights came on. (the engine and the wrench) pulled over and called a tow truck. had it towed to a mechanic. fault codes for cvt transmission, range performance, control solenoid, control sys. no parts available to repair. no way to rebuild transmission or purchase rebuilt. must replace with used transmission that will most likely have the same problems.
| purchased a 2007 ford freestyle. it was used at about 170,000 miles. after having it for a few months. i began to have problems with the throttle body. i was driving on the highway going 55 mph and it began to surge. the wrench light came on and i could no longer accelerate. i know that others have as well. i was told that this part had been recalled. i am not sure if this is true. i decided to make a complaint as others have had the same problem and it is what they suggested.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle accelerated and the throttle control and transmission warning indicators illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to operate normally; however, the failure recurred. in addition, the vehicle would accelerate without warning at traffic lights, stop signs, or when making turns. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds above 50 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle decelerated below 30 mph independently causing an abnormal knocking sound from the transmission. the powertrain warning senor illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the local hertrich ford-lincoln dealer of milford located on 1427 bay rd, milford, de, 19963 where it was diagnosed that multiple error codes internally with the transmission, and that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that they would record the failure, however there was no recall for the failure but were aware of the high volume of complaints. the failure mileage was approximately 98,897.
On may 27th, 2017, we were traveling at 50-55 mph with cruise control engaged on the highway when our ford freestyle began lurching badly and the rpm began surging. in a a few minutes the wrench light came on along with the engine light, battery light, abs light and airbag light. our speedometer began flipping back and forth uncontrollably. at that point the vehicle would not exceed 25-30 mph even at full speed. we could have been rear-ended! we immediately pulled off at a gas station to check the oil levels and check to see what was wrong. we started the vehicle back and returned home cautiously. we took the vehicle to the nearest lube place and got the oil changed. we returned home and researched about the issue. my husband (who is very mechanically inclined) decided to follow a mechanic's advice and cleaned the throttle body thoroughly with seafoam and a toothbrush. it was filthy and had lots of deposits built up on it. he unplugged the battery to reset everything and reinstalled the throttle body. it proved ineffective so we purchased a new throttle body for $320 from advanced auto parts. he installed it today and the problem has not been solved. we are at a loss and are not sure what to do. this issue should have been recalled. i am a mother of 3 and am currently pregnant with my fourth child and i do not feel safe driving this vehicle!
Ctv transmission. goes into creep mode. will not shift out of 1st. gear. turn car off and on. runs fine. transmission guy says the whole transmission needs to be replaced.
After starting the car in my driveway, i heard a loud 'helicopter sound' under the hood (to which i have come to find out was the transmission (cvt)). when i put the car into reverse, it violently raced forward, hitting the brick wall of my house. i have pushed it a few feet back and have not restarted the car for fear of this happening again.
My 2007 ford freestyle awd is suffering from well known and widely reported cvt failure. the vehicle makes "helicopter" sounds while in both park and neutral. multiple repair shops are well aware that cvt transmission is failing, and ford is not supplying replacement parts.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle shut down and became stuck in first gear. the wrench warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle restarted after a while and was driven home. the failure was not diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the failure mileage was 224,000.
From the 1st day i leased the vehicle from progressive auto, i could hear it raving high, steering wheel really heavy, brakes seemed strange and heavy to move. but the sales man kept telling and showing me a report that the vehicle is fine, and kept saying, its the type of engine in the vehicle (cvt) that's why it all seems strange. i kept going back to them advising them that i know something is wrong, but they kept saying they cannot find anything wrong. finally i took it to a ford dealership, and they advised me it was a transmission, brakes and suspension problem. and this was not even 2 months down the road. i was very upset and wanted to return the vehicle. so they decided to claim to fix the transmission by installing a used one. i had to get the other things fixed myself. not even a year and some later, i have to replace the transmission again. before the transmission completely died, as i was driving it started to stall to a point i almost got into a car accident with kids in the back, as the car kept jerking and i didn't know what was happening.this was the worst vehicle i have ever purchased in my life time. and the best part, is one one wants to take ownership of the problem with the vehicle that seems to be very very common. i wish the problems were easily diagnosed when first happening, and it would have saved me alot of headaches. i am usually a import vehicle individual, but i choose ford as i heard great things about them. but now i will never buy a ford again as it has been the worst experience i have had. i need over $3000 to fix the transmission and the vehicle is not even worth that much!
I had bought a used ford freestyle 2007 for a little over $6,000.00 with 102,000 miles on it and after almost exactly a year later, i was going to take off from a stop sign near my house and without even reaching 30 miles per hour the suv made a loud winding sound and the cvt transmission completely shut down without any warning and the transmission icon on the dash popped on. i tried to roll to the side of the road but ended up stuck in the middle. i tried shutting down the whole car and turning it back on with no luck. luckily family lived near by and they helped me by pulling it with a rope home. we had it checked out and the transmission is bad now to get it fixed would cost $5,000+ pretty much totaling the suv unfortunately we have no insurance and we are left with a $6,000.00 lemon in our driveway thanks ford. when looking up to see if other people had the problem we did we were shocked that the 2005-2007 ford freestyles have thousands of complaints for the same thing and no recall what is going on they should either recall the cvt transmission or take the suv off the market. family's with more than three kids are going to be in the market for those cars and to completely shut down without warning is very dangerous. luckily i was near home in the summer months but what are they waiting for. what if it was the dead of winter i was on the freeway and had all my children with and it was bad traffic everyone in the car would most likely die. please get the recall for this worthless cvt transmission.
I was attempting to pass a slow truck on a two lane road. as accelerated and pull alongside the truck the ctv transmission failed and the engine raced. i was able to get around the truck and get to the shoulder of the road. i call a tow truck and my car has been in the repair shop for 8 weeks. i am concerned regarding head on collisions that may have not been reported as a transmission problem. if a car would have been approaching in the opposite direction i would have suffered a head on collision.
I was driving at a steady speed on a slightly hilly road when the yellow tool indicator light came on and it appear that the transmission lost its connection. the engine stayed around 2000 rpm then drifted down and would not respond to the gas pedal changes. vehical towed to shop and left it there.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated while driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle failed to shift from first gear and the vehicle was making an abnormal sound. the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 74,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while starting the vehicle, the wrench warning light illuminated. while driving at 30 mph, there was an abnormal noise and the vehicle felt as if it would accelerate independently. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,061.
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. when starting the vehicle and shifting into reverse or drive at 2 mph, the vehicle would lunge forward or backwards as the brake pedal was depressed. in addition, the check engine and the wrench warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 190,000.
The cvt transmission in this vehicle is not safe. not sure why there hasn't been an investigation as of yet. my car started out making a humming sound and now has progressed to the point i need a new transmission. after lengthy research online i have found this is a common problem with this vehicle as well as in other ford vehicles. i have read of failures in these types of transmission as early as 15,000 miles on the vehicle. this is a well known problem including the fact that there is a class action suit on this matter which as far as i know is still pending. apparently ford has known of the problem, hence they stopped using and manufacturing this transmission making the parts to repair this transmission outrageously priced. so not only is ford profiting from the sale of these vehicles, now they are profiting from the sale of the parts as well.now i have my vehicle in for repair for an outrageous amount of money. this vehicle is not safe. failure can come at any time under any situation without warning. this vehicle can cause an accident or even worse bodily harm or even death when this transmission fails completely. i am quite sure by the shear numbers of complaints i have read that someone has contacted you in regards to this product. if not i am. please help the small guy out.
I am having trouble with the cvt transmission in my car when i put it in gear it lunges almost over powering the breaks. it also will stall if i have to hit the breaks hard to come to a stop real fast. i will be getting in the highway and every so often it will not shift it just runs at really high rpm. it will also loose power suddenly and a wrench light will come on that limits me to 2000 rpm and i have had to pull off to the side of the highway many times because of this. i have been doing some research and i have come to find out that thousands of people have had some of these same problems and ford won't do anything about them. i feel unsafe while driving my car but it is my only transportation at the time so i have no other option is have also experienced problems with my awd and i feel it can't work because of the problems of my transmissio .
Put car in drive started down the street when all of a sudden the transmission started making noise and the car started slowing down. i pulled over and parked the car then turned it off, try to start it back up but the car would not move when put in drive. it would reverse but it would not go forward. had to call fro a tow truck and have vehicle towed to dealer. the following codes showed up when the repair shop checked the transmission: po 218, po 701, po868, po871, po961. the ford dealership said that the transmission would have to be replaced because the transmission was dead. i have looked up the ford freestyle and have found that there are many vehicles with this same problem. i could have had a bad accident i was on the highway because the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road and traffic had to veer around me to keep from hitting me. i had children in the vehicle we could have died. a new transmission cost me $2200.00 and the cost to have it replaced was $900.00. i believe that i should get some kind of compensation for a problem that you knew the vehicle has with it's transmission. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. when the contact started the parked vehicle, a loud knocking sound was heard coming from the transmission. the throttle control/transmission and the service engine warning lights illuminated. the vehicle would not accelerate over 20 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 62,000.
April 2015, my vehicle started making knocking/grinding/ticking noises once it was started. sometimes the transmission would fail to shift into gear(s). i prodeeded to physically move my shifter into gear(s) a few times. the transmission then shifted into gear(s), making a hard "clunk" sound. sounding like the transmission had 'dropped' into gear; as if it had a low trasmission fluid level. mind you, recently, a local shop changed my oil and all fluids were checked and refilled if needed. the shop informed me about code p0942, because they had never seen this code before in their life! engine-codes.com states: "p0942 - hydraulic pressure unit" with a rating of 3/3 (3=high). i called a local ford dealership, and was informed about this code; which doesn't identify the actual problem/issue; resulting in no specifics. on thursday, august 20, 2015, while driving on the highway, my vehicle started to surge, and the rpm's continuously fluctuated (while the cruise was on). my vehicle then started to shake, and made a thumping/crunching noise, followed with the forward propulsion ceasing to exist. i frantically turned my fore ways on, and drifted until at a complete stop on the sholder of the highway. again, while i physically shifted gear(s), the transmission sounded low on fluid, as if no (valid) shifting of gear(s)s and also maintained a humming noise. from the passenger seat, my 12 year old son, grabbed my hand and asked me to pray with him; pray that we'd make it home without getting hurt (our safety). numerous times our vehicle shook tremendously when other vehicles passed by. once home, i was still calming my son down, we both needed to sleep. that night, my son and i experienced a tramatic (nightmare like) situation. now, ford customers are forced upon (a) safety hazzard(s). yes, preventable safety hazzard(s), if dealt with asap.
I purchased this vehicle 01/20/15 from a used lot in raleigh nc, 'something you should never do in the first place''. i had just got off maternity leave and i needed a car so i could be able to get to work. on the 4th of april 2015. i was driving the car on the highway when it started to jerk back and make a very loud roaring sound. the car started to slow down and jerk back and forth if you went over 20 miles per hour. i pulled over to check the car and i could not figure out what was wrong with it so i called my husband and he came. the car could still drive but very slowly while making the same sound so he drove very slowly behind me. keep in mind i had my two month old in the back seat when all of this craziness was happening. next day i couldn't even drive the car because of the poor condition it was in. when we took it to a specialized mechanic for this cvt transmission it has, they notified us after waiting four to five hours to replace this unique engine it would cost $4-$6,000 dollars. that is insane to have to replace the entire transmission after only having it for two months and to replace it because ''ford'' is too cheap and inconsiderate to not recall this piece of crap of a car. how can ford ignore this issue that it is causing world wide. it is not just one or two minor issues it is the entire transmission that needs to be replaced. wake up ford!! this is a terrible vehicle to sell to the american people!! i wouldn't even sale this vehicle in foreign countries!! my advice to anyone is to never ever buy any ford vehicles!! this was a nightmare!! *tr
When i am driving my car it will start to take off without me pushing down on the gas pedal. i am having issues when trying to put the car in reverse, the car will hesitate while driving in reverse. when putting the car in drive or reverse the car will jump. *tr
I have not had a catastrophic incident, yet, but certain to after researching the issue i am experiencing from the cvt transmission in this vehicle. since about january 2015, while in park or neutral, there is a loud whirring sound, similar to a helicopter. after extensive online research, it seems that most, if not all others who experienced this same issue eventually led to catastrophic failure of the transmission. i have also experienced the cold weather related issue where once drive is engaged, the check engine light and wrench light illuminate and the car just stumbles when the accelerator is depressed. letting it run for about 10 to 15 minutes temporarily resolves the issue. *tr
Helicopter noise started in december 2014. you hear the whirling sound in park neutral and reverse- sounds fine in drive. driving fine. no loss of power this vehicle gets driven about 100 miles a day. last week had dealer look and tell me the torque converter about to break. can only fix it with complete new tranny install. $6300!!! took it to independent transmission guy and tells me same thing with lower price. 2 hours later after i stopped car and went into store and started car up and the wrench was lit up on dash. no power. revving really high. bucking and undriveable. got a code reader and code p042-hydraulic pressure unit came up let car sit for 30 mins then turned car on and wrench display gone! moved car out of road to safety and there it sits. should i be fixing a car that cannot be guaranteed to never do this again as all cvt transmissions do this? how can ford be ok with this? my vehicle is amazing and roomy and safe and i hate to think its ready for the junkyard at 140k. so disappointed with ford. please join me in hopes that ford will step up to the plate and acknowledge this. *js

So i used to have problems with the rpm surge in my car then a customer satisfaction program (csp) came out and i had the throttle body deposits cleaned as per the csp12n03 in april of 2013. i have not had any issues until july 2014. major issue- i was on the interstate on july 27th and my car began decelerating really quickly. the wrench light came on during this deceleration and i had to come to a stop in the v where cars are merging onto the interstate. i had to stop because my car slowed so drastically that i would have not made it to the shoulder of the road and would have gotten hit by another motorist. when i came to a stop my car was actually still running, i manually turned the car off. after i sat for a moment, i decided i would see if my car would crank. the car cranked and died and finally stayed cranked, i decided to try to move the car. the wrench light was no longer on and the car did exactly what a normal car would do. i was able to get up to speed and exit and drive the rest of the way home. i took it for diagnostics, the ford dealership where i live say that it is the throttle body (the part that had a csp on it). i do not feel that i should have to pay 1000 dollars or more to have a faulty part replaced. obviously something is wrong with this otherwise ford would not have had the part cleaned. i would like for ford to replace the part on my car and anyone else's vehicles that is having the throttle issues. even though after some of the parts have been replaced, the issue starts again. i noticed that some of the investigations into ford throttle issues include years 2009 and newer for that limp mode thing, however, my car is a 2007 and totally did the decelerating on the interstate. it was very frightening and i would like this issue to become a recall for a replacement. i called ford and filed a complaint today, 9/15/2014. *tr
Tl* the contact owns 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated while driving 55 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 30 mph and stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle however, the speed never increased. the failure recurred intermittently only while driving on the highway. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who could not duplicate the failure. the mechanic informed the contact to continue driving the vehicle until the warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
I was driving through a very busy intersection and heard a thump. my 2007 ford freestyle stopped in its tracks and would not move. i just about caused a major accident. one of the vehicles behind me ran over a sidewalk to avoid this. luckily no one was walking. i had some people push me to the side of the road and had it towed to dealer. there they let me know my cvt transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $6500. there was no warning it was about to break, no noises or funny things happened just died. *tr
I was driving out of the driveway and onto a somewhat busy street. as i attempted to accelerate, i noticed i could not go any faster than about 10 mph despite being in a zone of approximately 35 mph. after traveling less than a mile at this speed, i turned around and return the car to the driveway. i then proceeded to have it towed to a repair shop, who reported this was a transmission issue. this repair shop asked for our permission to tow the vehicle to another shop who specializes in transmission issues. we agreed then later received word that the transmission was "shot" and the cost to repair would be in the area of approximately $4,500. when i looked up the value of the car on line, it was showing it's running value of approximately the same amount. the transmission repair shop stated that they were told by a local ford dealer that the models of 2005 through 2007 ford freestyle's cvt type of transmission was the cause of the problem. they were also told that ford didn't have sufficient inventory of parts to repair the transmission, and by the way there was no recall notice out on them since parts weren't available. i am now stuck with a car that will not run, nor can i sell or trade in as it has little to no value at this time. ford needs to step up and take responsibility for this faulty designed cvt transmission's. *tr
2007 ford freestyle vin # [xxx]. have had car for less than 2 years. replaced brakes twice. the throttle seems to be sticking and transmission. wrench on dash. have two small children. car will accelerate on own when foot is on brake. it has also jumped backwards. concerned about this dangerous vehicle. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while shifting into park or reverse, the vehicle would jerk. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 121,492 and the current mileage was 121,692. updated 08/19/14*lj updated 8/29/2017*cn
Stopped at signal light, wrench light and engine light illuminated. when attempted to accelerate, vehicle rpm's moved erratically and vehicle would not drive above 35mph. had vehicle towed to transmission shop and was told vehicle went into "fail safe mode" transmission is none repairable and needs to be replaced. previously had car serviced under recall with throttle. one day prior, the car "surged/lunged" when put in reverse. had recall done 12 months ago and just went over 12000 miles since work done. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission had malfunctioned and would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 79,000.
Started to experience engine surge problem that is apparently pretty common. mostly occurs when accelerating from stopped position. also check engine light came on. checked code at napa store. p0109 indicating fuel rail pressure sensor. local mechanic claimed it to be a fuel filter problem. had mechanic change filter, problem resolved for very short time period. about month later same problem and engine code. replaced fuel sensor myself. problem returned 2 days later without engine code. from my research on this site and others found out about customer satisfaction program 12n03. called local dealer to look into having vehicle checked. was informed by service operator that my vin does not qualify but they would let me pay $150.00 dollars to check out problem. i am thinking i will exercise my free will to get rid of this vehicle for a kia or hyundai model that i can trust. *tr
This has happened almost everyday, if you stop for a short time either long light or pull in some where and take off the wrench comes on and at that point i know the car will not go over 54 miles per hour and acts like it won't up shift out of second gear even though i know its a cvt , this is very frustrating and dangerous , ford will not do anything about it , until enough people die or get severely injured , i must be lucky though mine happens all the time i know if i shut the free style off and re start it goes back to normal for a while ... people need to petition ford .... or start a mass lawsuit against what should be a massive re-call , why is the government not jumping in to force action , like they are now doing with gm ..... a 35k car should be built safer, to worried about everyone wearing seatbelts, but not about vehicles that lunge forward or just can't accelerate , the transmission is junk and we pay for it. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the vehicle began to loose power. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection and they stated the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 117,000. the vin was unavailable.
Bought this car used 2 years ago. car started making a loud noise, but when put in drive, it quiets a little. not running well at all. took it to get it looked at, 1st replaced a bad water pump (almost 700) and then was told it's the transmission. they want $6k for, which i don't have. i still owe $6k on the car. so, i am basically stuck w a car that doesn't work and i can't sell or trade in, nor can i afford to at this point. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle made a loud noise as the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was not able to be restarted. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who advised that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 30,000. *tr
When starting the vehicle a loud rattling noise can be heard. this noise stops temporarily when the car is shifted from "park" to "drive". the noise then becomes progressively louder when the accelerator is pressed. gas mileage has declined when driving. when parking on one occasion the car lunged forward without accelerating the gas pedal. i took the car into a automotive repair shop to see what the problem was and they indicated that the entire transmission needs to be replaced because of defective design/materials in the "continuously variable transmission" (cvt). ford has done nothing to provide a replacement transmission at no charge and has not modified cvt to correct this obvious manufacturing defect. *tr
2007 ford freestyle. consumer writes in regards to transmission problems. *smd the consumer stated the transmission was making a loud noise, and the vehicle stalled.
My car accelerates forward when i try to park it. this is very dangerous and lucky that it has only happened when i'm only going a couple of miles an hour as i am trying to park. *tr
While driving 45 mph had a sudden loss of power and increase rpms. immediately pulled over. engine idle in park makes a loud helicopter sound when engaged in drive or reverse sound is not heard as loud. after doing lengthy research this common problem with cvt transmissions by ford at around the same mileage (70,000mi).ford has yet to recall these vehicles voluntarily. dealers insist transmission needs replacing (common theme).no way thousands of vehicles should have catastrophic transmission failure at 70,000! this is a manufacturer and safety issue. i'm just thankful i didn't have my kids in the car and traveling on the interstate. *tr
