Problems with 2007 Ford Freestyle ENGINE

On average, the 2007 Ford Freestyle starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 93 601 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2007 Ford Freestyle

Engine surges when steering wheel is turned. this happens when idling or at low speeds. surging causes car to accelerate unless drivers foot is ready to stop it by stepping on the brake pedal. very dangerous to any non aware drivers.

My 2007 ford freestyle sel stalled out on me when i was on the interstate and a wrench light came on i put a new throttle body on it and also new transmission filters and changed the transmission fluid

My car randomly surges. this usualy happens at low speeds when the car is at or close to idle. the car will sugre like the gass is being pressed but it is definetly not. it also surges randomly when shifted into different gears park, reverse, neutral. it is very dangerous as it is inpredictable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle accelerated and the throttle control and transmission warning indicators illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the vehicle was restarted and was able to operate normally; however, the failure recurred. in addition, the vehicle would accelerate without warning at traffic lights, stop signs, or when making turns. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repair. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 126,000.

Engine will stall (cold or warm condition) resulting in a total loss of engine power. vehicle will take some time for it to restart. car may then run for several minutes while driving down the road or stall out upon riving off.

I was on the parkway going about 65 mph. i stopped at a light to turn. as i pressed on the pedal the car did not accelerate normally. it was sluggish. i pulled over to let traffic pass. i turned off the car and turned it on again. the car started and i was able to drive it about a 1/4 mile before it stopped accelerating. in that 1/4 mile the car barely accelerated. i had to press the pedal far to raise the rpms a little bit. had i continued to drive down that parkway i would have been hit by another car. i had to be towed home.

Vehicle accelerates (surges) when stopped, especially when parking or reversing.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving at a low speed, the vehicle shook while making a turn and stalled. the failure usually occurred when the air conditioner was activated. the vehicle was able to restart and was taken to a mechanic who diagnosed that the electronic throttle body failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin and failure mileage were not available. ... updated 08/23/16 *bf

Engine lost acceleration power while driving due to a clogged throttle body while on a highway. google search indicates this is a common complaint with 2006 and 2007 freestyles.

My 2007 ford freestyle cuts off repeatedly after almost every red light stop. i saw a lot of complaints about this matter with different ford freestyles and no one seems to know the cause. mainly anytime i apply the brakes the cut shuts off and puts myself and family in life- threatening situations. also, the vehicle idles high while my feet on on the breaks.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle was accelerating independently without warning. in addition, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was able to restart. the failures recurred various times. the vehicle was taken to independent mechanic where the failure was undetermined. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 156,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 30 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to accelerate past 2 mph. the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred three times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle body failed and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was previously repaired under a manufacturer's recall; however, the remedy failed to prevent the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 102,000. the vin was unavailable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. when starting the vehicle and shifting into reverse or drive at 2 mph, the vehicle would lunge forward or backwards as the brake pedal was depressed. in addition, the check engine and the wrench warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 190,000.

Car accelerates...lunges...as i am about to park. i bought this car for my 16 year old to learn how to drive and so unhappy with it! last summer, only weeks after buying it, the car suddenly won't accelerate and the rpms go way up without acceleration. wont go over 25 mph. turn it off at grocery store, turn it on again and problem gone. now this spring same thing but continual now. busy downtown and car wont go over 25 mph. wrench light on again! so unhappy. googled the problem and multiple complaints of same thing. why is ford not held accountable?

April 2015, my vehicle started making knocking/grinding/ticking noises once it was started. sometimes the transmission would fail to shift into gear(s). i prodeeded to physically move my shifter into gear(s) a few times. the transmission then shifted into gear(s), making a hard "clunk" sound. sounding like the transmission had 'dropped' into gear; as if it had a low trasmission fluid level. mind you, recently, a local shop changed my oil and all fluids were checked and refilled if needed. the shop informed me about code p0942, because they had never seen this code before in their life! engine-codes.com states: "p0942 - hydraulic pressure unit" with a rating of 3/3 (3=high). i called a local ford dealership, and was informed about this code; which doesn't identify the actual problem/issue; resulting in no specifics. on thursday, august 20, 2015, while driving on the highway, my vehicle started to surge, and the rpm's continuously fluctuated (while the cruise was on). my vehicle then started to shake, and made a thumping/crunching noise, followed with the forward propulsion ceasing to exist. i frantically turned my fore ways on, and drifted until at a complete stop on the sholder of the highway. again, while i physically shifted gear(s), the transmission sounded low on fluid, as if no (valid) shifting of gear(s)s and also maintained a humming noise. from the passenger seat, my 12 year old son, grabbed my hand and asked me to pray with him; pray that we'd make it home without getting hurt (our safety). numerous times our vehicle shook tremendously when other vehicles passed by. once home, i was still calming my son down, we both needed to sleep. that night, my son and i experienced a tramatic (nightmare like) situation. now, ford customers are forced upon (a) safety hazzard(s). yes, preventable safety hazzard(s), if dealt with asap.

When i am driving my car it will start to take off without me pushing down on the gas pedal. i am having issues when trying to put the car in reverse, the car will hesitate while driving in reverse. when putting the car in drive or reverse the car will jump. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving at low speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and the engine revved. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 75,000. updated 09/03/15*lj updated 3/29/2016*js

I have not had a catastrophic incident, yet, but certain to after researching the issue i am experiencing from the cvt transmission in this vehicle. since about january 2015, while in park or neutral, there is a loud whirring sound, similar to a helicopter. after extensive online research, it seems that most, if not all others who experienced this same issue eventually led to catastrophic failure of the transmission. i have also experienced the cold weather related issue where once drive is engaged, the check engine light and wrench light illuminate and the car just stumbles when the accelerator is depressed. letting it run for about 10 to 15 minutes temporarily resolves the issue. *tr

With the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle will lurch forward when putting in forward gear. vehicle stalled while driving and also when making turns in residential area. almost hit another vehicle because the power steering went out. *tr

2007 ford freestyle vin # [xxx]. have had car for less than 2 years. replaced brakes twice. the throttle seems to be sticking and transmission. wrench on dash. have two small children. car will accelerate on own when foot is on brake. it has also jumped backwards. concerned about this dangerous vehicle. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Stopped at signal light, wrench light and engine light illuminated. when attempted to accelerate, vehicle rpm's moved erratically and vehicle would not drive above 35mph. had vehicle towed to transmission shop and was told vehicle went into "fail safe mode" transmission is none repairable and needs to be replaced. previously had car serviced under recall with throttle. one day prior, the car "surged/lunged" when put in reverse. had recall done 12 months ago and just went over 12000 miles since work done. *tr

Unexpected acceleration burst and some times i will be driving and the engine totally shuts off there is no check engine light on and ford ran a diagnostic with no apparent problem. *tr

My wife & i were visiting a friends house with my wife driving. she put the van into reverse to leave with her foot on the brake. it suddenly took off at a high rate of speed & would not stop even with both. feet on the brake. we shot out the driveway at high speed & continued down the roadway until my wife lost control & crashed into a ditch; the only thing that stopped the van was hitting a large rock. this of course caused damage to the passenger side rear quarter panel. my wife suffered a small cut to her calf; i was uninjured. we were very lucky there were no other vehicles in the roadway at that time or it could have been very dangerous !! my wife is so shook up by this incident that she now refuses to drive her van. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the check engine warning lamp flashed several times and then went off. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was not able to replicate and diagnose the failure. when the vehicle was in reverse, it independently surged backwards and the contact had to quickly apply the brake pedal each time the failure occurred. the contact also stated that the vehicle hesitated numerous times upon starting and then stalled. the contact had to apply the brake pedal while at a stop due to the vehicle independently moving forward. the vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed. the contact was not able to drive the vehicle for several months due to the intermittent failures. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 12,000.

Vehicle will not operate over 1,000 rpm. it had the throttle body cleaned on 15 aug 2013 under customer satisfaction recall 12n03. for the original complaint, the idling spiked where in this instance the car will not accelerate above 1,000 rpm. the codes associated with this incident are: p060b; p061b; p0122; p0155; p0222; p0316; p0480; p2104; p2110; p2122; p2127; p2132; p2135. *tr

Started making noise like a helicopter. then it wouldn't change out of gear. it is showing the wrench and the engine light on. will not shift to different gears at all. i have 4 grandchildren that live with me and that rely on me to get them to dr appts, school, and other places. i also have a pregnant daughter that has had to rely on other people to get to her drs appts. i am very disappointed in the quality of this car. i would not recommend this care to anyone else. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle transmission started slipping recently. i have always taken good care of my car and my mechanic just told me that i need a new transmission. he also told me that there have been many problems with the 2007 ford freestyle transmissions. i cannot believe i have to replace my transmission which costs approximately $6,000.00 to replace. i will be contacting ford directly as well. *tr

Over the last couple of years, i've noticed that the vehicle would jump a little when shifted into gear. occasionally, the same little lurch would happen at a stoplight. today, while stopped at idle the engine repeatedly revved over the course of about 10 seconds causing the vehicle to jump forward even with the brakes applied. shortly after, a similar problem occurred, but not as pronounced as the previous event. after the incident, the performance of the engine seemed to have degraded and the vehicle was only able to accelerate very slowly. *tr

After starting the 2007 ford freestyle it idols about 1000rpms. upon putting it into drive or reverse when you lift off the brake the car will rev up the engine to about 2000rpms and speed forward or backward. this rev of the engine last approximately 1 second and then the car returns to normal idol speed. this creates a dangerous situation in which if you do not anticipate the acceleration you could have an accident. *tr

I have had my 2007 ford freestyle since 2008. this car has been a money pit. i have had to get a water pump, ac compressor, and throttle body, now it needs an expensive faulty transmission replaced called cvt transmission. the car is now parked for safety and to avoid further damage. the issue that i have experienced is while my foot completely on the break, the car has darted forward with out my ability to stop it. i have had this happen with people walking in front of me in the cross walk while at the stop light and my car has darted at them. scary!! to say the least. i would not be surprised if anyone else has hit someone due to this problem. i don't drive the car anymore because it shut off on me while in traffic, unexpectedly, gratefully the person behind me was paying attention. i have fixed the ac compressor, throttle body, and water pump, i cannot possibly replace the transmission, i have 3 children and now without a car. i would not feel safe even after it is fixed. from reading other complaints this car is made faulty, and is going to fell me in some other expensive or dangerous way. to my knowledge ford has discontinued making the freestyle and is now making taurus in its place. they should have recalled every single ford freestyle, this car is dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!! it has been made to fail, i hope ford can restore my trust in them. i do not want any other ford because of this. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while reversing out of a parking space, the vehicle lunged in reverse. the contact mentioned that the wrench, abs, and check engine warning lamps illuminated and then the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 98,000 and the current mileage was 108,000. updated 11/29/13*lj

Driving on interstate vehicle begins to slow down unexpectedly. no acceleration. must pull to shoulder. turn engine off. wait a couple of minutes. start engine resume travel-2 minutes later same incident-vehicle slows down. pull to shoulder. engine has difficulty starting. end result--vehicle has to be towed to dealership. vehicle purchased march 2013- weeks after purchase 1st incident occurred. car facility stated it was a throttle issue. car facility supposed to have corrected the problem. may 2013 2nd incident--took vehicle to dealership (only for an oil change)--dealership stated a recall due to throttle issues. now 3rd incident as noted above. dealership stated for 3rd incident it is a throttle issue. *tr

Put car in reverse veh lunged backward almost causing a crash. this has happened several more times wrench light comes on. received a recall notice from ford took veh in to dealer they said the recall only is for cleaning the throttle i needed a new throttle. cost was $850 i have an extended warranty but it did not cover this part. i feel if ford has a recall on this item it should be replaced if needed. i am very disappointed in what has gone on with this. have seen many complaints on this situation it is obviously a problem with this model. *tr

First time driving in the snow today in my freestyle and as i was coming to a stop sign. i was braking and my car accelerated all by itself and i could not stop and went through the stop sign! i had my two kids in the car with me and it scared me to death! i am just glad there was no other vehicles around at the time. my car has done this in the past and its not safe at all but driving in the snow is extremely dangerous and i am scared to drive my own vehicle it seems to be getting worse. *tr

At 49,660 miles we had to have the throttle body changed because the car lunged forward and stalled out. on june 19, 2012 our 2007 ford freestyle was serviced with a transmission flush and fluid change, and a multi-point inspection. everything looked good. on nov. 5, 2012 it would rev up when driving and would not accelerate. after researching, we found out that the cvt transmission that was put in the 2005-2007 ford freestyle is a defective design that poses numerous safety concerns. ford does not even make the transmission any more, so our only choice is to pay over $5000 for a used/rebuilt one that may have the same problems. our car is only 5 years old. we have taken good care of it. we need a reliable vehicle and do not have the money to fix this. please have ford recall these faulty cvt transmissions and have more concern for safety and customer satisfaction. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when driving at any speed, the lights on the instrument panel would darken and the vehicle would lose power without warning. the vehicle would return to normal acceleration after several minutes but the air bag and service warning lights remained illuminated. the failure was experienced numerous times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic and located the failure at the left headlight, which caused water and moisture to penetrate. the left headlight was replaced however, the failure was not corrected. the failure mileage was 84,300 and the current mileage was 84,900.

Incident 1: vehicle lunged forward during a low speed tight turn into a parking spot. driver's right foot was on the brake, nothing was hit. air conditioning was on. unable to repeat. incident 2: vehicle lunged backward while backing a small camping trailer into a driveway. driver's right foot was on the brake, nothing was hit. steering wheel was straight, air conditioning on. no damage. unable to repeat. *tr

We purchased this vehicle on wednesday august 8th, 2012. we were backing up out of a parking spot and as my husband turned the steering wheel the car accelerated backwards and the car shut off after he hit the brakes. he did not have his foot on the accelerator at all. in fact, he was in transition from the brake and his foot hadn't even hit the accelerator pedal yet. this is the only problem we have experienced since having the vehicle. i would not say it lunges forward or reverse- i would say it hops forward or reverse. it's seems to be a spurt of acceleration. the vehicle shifts fine into gear, no stalls, no grinding noises, just little spurts when it's backing up. the only difference between my husbands driving and mine is that i always engage the emergency brake when i park. i'm used to driving manual transmissions. so, when i put the vehicle into reverse i still have the emergency brake on and the spurts do not occur with my driving. i did find it alarming that with my particular vehicle it does not require my foot to be on the brake pedal in order to start the vehicle. i can start the vehicle by simply turning the key. this is not something i'm used to seeing in modern vehicles as i am used to driving volkswagen's. i'm concerned because i don't know if this problem will get worse. will i drive down the road and not be able to stop? i can't afford extra parts. i love everything about this vehicle (and from a volkswagen enthusiast that says a lot). i just don't know what to do or what the worst case scenario is. i don't want to lose my life. *tr

My car will lunge forward when my foot is not on the accelerator. i have to slam on the brake to stop the motion before hitting the car in front of me or a pedestrian in a parking lot. i did an internet search and found there is an open investigation on this and thought i should report it on my car. this is very scary to me and happens quite often in a drive through or when i am backing out of a parking space. i am not sure what i should do next. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle will lunge unexpectedly in idle, with foot on the brake. sometimes the vehicle will surge and shut down. this happens more with the air conditioning on. i will shut off the a/c, then restart the vehicle and drive without a/c. *tr

In june 2011 i had to bring my vehicle in for service, i noticed prior to my vehicle breaking down the vehicle would lurch even thou my foot was not on the accelerator pedal (in forward or reverse). the temp outside was in the low 90's. i had bought this vehicle in the fall of 2010. now today (18 july 2012) i am once again taking my car in for the same repairs (parts replacement). the temp yesterday was near 90, i had the air on and was backing into a parking spot when my vehicle lurched back instantly without my foot on the accelerator (i had to slam on the brakes) so i did not crash into the other vehicle in the stall behind the one i was baking into. all the sudden the engine stalled; i re-started the vehicle (and the check engine light came on and is now on constantly as it was back in 2011). when i left the parking slot i was in i attempted to go home; the vehicle lurched the whole time i was in the parking lot, once i was on the main road the vehicle would not accelerate normally; also the cruise control would not work. again; these are the same problems i had in 2011. i crept my car to the superior ford dealership where i had the work done before. i asked the service dept worker if she knew of any tech-issues or concerns and she said no....i was not buying it. *tr

I have had the throttle replaced last year around june 2011 and lately (only a year later july 2012) the throttle is accelerating on its on own once again when i'm parking my vehicle and while backing out (reverse). why isn't this on a recall list by now??? *tr

While driving in 90 degree + temperatures, we have noticed that the car lurches while reversing from a parking spot, or at a stop. braking does stop the unexpected acceleration, however it still feels unsafe. this has happened 3-6 times, and as recently as today (7/17/12). it is not driver error - again has happened enough that we are able to analyze that the foot is not on the gas. check engine light comes on when this occurs. *tr

On and off over the month of july 2012, when i put my car in reverse to pull out of a parking spot or driveway it surges/jumps without my foot touching the gas pedal. it happens only when i try and reverse. this keeps happening and i'm afraid one day i'm going to hit someone or something as i can't control the surges. also on july 7, 2012 the engine just cut off on me while reversing out of a parking space. i was able to start it back up again after it died. in december 2011 i had a new transmission put in. also in june 2011 i had to replace the ac compressor. *tr

Over the months, when driving the vehicle there were inconsistent occurrences of surging forward or backward at low speeds without accelerating. typically this has occurred when parking or backing out of a parking spot/garage. it has increased lately and this past friday, the vehicle surged greatly and then the engine stalled. this has happened after idling. the only "remedy" is shutting the vehicle down completely and then restarting. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle has a cvt transmission problem. when i arrived at the hotel, the valet parking driver almost hit the car on the front because of sudden accelerator of the transmission. i also almost hit another car after that. *jb
