Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2007 Ford Freestyle

My 2007 ford freestyle has a cvt transmission problem. when i arrived at the hotel, the valet parking driver almost hit the car on the front because of sudden accelerator of the transmission. i also almost hit another car after that. *jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving in reverse. the vehicle was restarted and a light on the instrument panel illuminated, indicating there was a problem. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnosis. the contact was informed that the vehicle would need a new throttle body and a new transmission. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 120,000.

Loud whirring noise which gets louder with acceleration and is really loud going downhill when the engine is holding back. also have two rust spots on the hood and the car is only 5 years old and has been kept clean and is waxed at least once per year. *tr

This vehicle will lurch forward, sometimes several feet when i have been stopped with my foot on the brake. if i lift my foot, the car will lurch forward before i touch the accelerator. reapplying the brakes will stop the car, but sometimes have to turn off the engine before it will stop lurching. last occurrence was when i was in line at carwash and was moving the car forward slowly. each time i moved forward, it lunged. i haven't yet hit anyone or anything but this is dangerous and i know from researching that several hundred people have reported similar incidents, this is not normal, it is dangerous and should be recalled before someone is seriously injured. *tr

When i started backing up my car with the a/c on it start to lung and even shut off at times. i love to back in my parking space and this had never happened so this was a surprise to me. i pulled forward then cut the wheel and the moment i would put the car in reverse it would lung when my foot is on the breaks lightly. i was so frighten by this i took the car back to the oil change place today (7-11-12) to see if something was done wrong when they change the oil. then i took it to the car to the mechanic on 7-11-12 too; which all he could do for me was flush the throttle to see it that can help the problem. *tr

I have been having this problem for a little over a month now. my vehicle 'lunges" on its own. it has been doing it when i put it in reverse from park or in drive from park. it has not done it while driving at this time. i will have my foot on the brake and when i come out of park it seems to idle high on its own and jerk either forward or backward by itself while i have my foot on the brake. sometimes it does it hard enough that the vehicle will die and i have to turn it off and wait a minute then start it again. im not sure if its something in the idle or transmission or what but it gets scary as one time i was backing out of a driveway and while i had the break on it went on its own and i almost ran in front of an oncoming car. i have seen alot of complaints about this issue and do not understand why a recall has not been issued. i know that me personally being a single working mom can not afford a high mechanic bill to fix a problem that should have a recall on it. please advise if this is still under investigation. *tr

As i was stopping to get gas, the car surged when i was applying brakes. it is also surging as i am driving down the road. this is happening more and more. getting to the point where i am scared to drive the car. i have grandkids that ride in the car with me. can't afford to get a new car. *tr

As has been reported by others, the vehicle will accelerate unexpectedly at low speeds when in reverse and drive, while the brake is engaged or i'm just letting off the brakes. i have to mash the brakes hard and keep them engaged for several seconds until the acceleration slows to normal. the problem seems to happen more frequently when the a/c is on. *tr

The car surges when you put in gear, even with your foot on the brake. it does it in forward and reverse. it is very scary, many times i almost hit something. this past winter i was on the interstate and the car lost power, i could not go over 30 miles per hour. *tr

Driving vehicle with a/c on, vehicle jerks forward or backward depending if in reverse or drive, control panel lights up and car shuts down or loses power while driving. have to shut car off and restart and light will go out and power will return. as long as a/c is on, vehicle will continue with the same problem. almost have hit other cars in parking lot and road due to it acting up. very unsafe, ford needs a recall before someone gets killed!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving on various occasions. the contact also stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate when the accelerator was depressed on a few occasions. in addition, the vehicle intermittently failed to respond when the brakes were applied. the failures recurred and became more severe. the failure was common when the vehicle had been idle or parked under the sun for a while. the power train and engine warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to dealer for a diagnostic test or repair. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 5,040.

Vehicle lunges about 1 ft while foot is on break no reason in drive or reverse with no gas pressure, lunges about 6 feet without foot on break no warning or reason, vehicle jerks and stalls and loses power after lunging 1-2 ft in reverse, throttle /transmission light will turn on and off. when put on the diagnostic the computer the car computer will not keep code, i live in a family neighborhood this is very dangerous kids play in the street!!!! ford needs to take responsibility!! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while traveling various speeds, he heard a loud noise as the vehicle suddenly stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 100,700.

I purchased a used ford freestyle 2007 model in april and after having the car that i love and felt safe with my children in, it began to act crazy!! it lunges when pulling in to park or backing out of a parking spot. it scares me now to put my kids in it!!! today after it lunged a couple different times the check engine light came on. while attempting to park at the store i almost hit a parked car and couldn't control the freestyle!! it seems to be worse if the air is on. after one of the lunging fits today a wrench light came on and then there was no power at all. i pulled over turned it off and restarted it the light went out and power came back! something really needs to be done!!! *js

When transmission is placed into reverse or drive, the engine will surge at idle speed. it creates a very scary situation especially in parking lots. the surge usually happens right after the transmission shift and then can happen at any time, usually at idle speed. took it to the dealer for repair and they said it need a new throttle body. i've seen hundreds of other posts about this same issue with model years 05-07 freestyles. *js

When i put the car in drive it lunges forward and when you put it in reverse it lunges back. if your foot is not on the brake you can hurt someone. its worse when the air conditioner is on. *tr

About a week after i bought my 2007 ford freestyle it started lunging when placed in gear (drive or reverse). it is the same as the many many other 05-07 freestyles i have red about. something needs to be done about this. some day this may result in a death. the freestyle is a family car, which means there are children around it. think about what you would want done if this car attacked your child. life is worth much more than a recall on a flawed car. *tr

Im not sure if these are two completely separate issues. starting around 2012 the vehicle would lunge forward after coming to a complete stop and especially when the air conditioner is running. now the cvt transmission has gone completely out an we are unable to drive it. *tr

When idling/parking the vehicle will surge uncontrollably. causing near misses of other cars and personnel. *tr

Throttle body system problem. car lunging at low speeds and when the driver is not pressing the acceleration pedal; sudden and unexpected. more apparent when the vehicle's air conditioning system is on or when the steering wheel is turned sharply. past loyal ford customer. this was a brand new purchase. problem started again after the hydraulic control unit was replaced in 2008. i have had all i can take; visited dealership today (3-02-212)! please ford correct this for the sake of your customers. *tr

The vehicle lunges into gear - both drive and reverse. rpms jump rapidly and car jumps into gear. i need to push on brake with all of my might to stop it from moving. also jumps erratically when stopped such as at a traffic light or stop sign. it is much worse when the air conditioning is on. as the situation worsened, the vehicle would stall due to surging. upon restarting when wrench light comes on and then the car will not move. there is no response to the gas pedal. after waiting 10 -15 minutes it will then start and run fine until next time. i had transmission trouble as a result of this. i had the transmission serviced but this did not correct the problem. the technician cleaned off the throttle body housing and it seemed to solve the problem....temporarily. within 10,000 miles the vehicle started stalling again. i took it to my mechanic who ran a scan and got transmission codes. back to transmission shop. now they said that the transmission needs to be replaced. replaced the transmission with a used one with 30,000 miles. ran fine for 15 minutes and wrench light comes on again and the car won't move. upon researching i have found multiple complaints on both the transmission and throttle body and housing. i understand you are investigating this and would like my complaint added to your list! *tr

While approaching a red stop light under light braking from 35 mph, i lessened the pressure on the brake pedal to reduce the rate of deceleration. at approximately 10 mph, the engine rpm surged up and the vehicle lunged forward. my foot was on the brake at all times and i was able to safely bring the vehicle to a full stop without entering the intersection. at no time during the incident was any pressure applied to the accelerator as my right foot was on the brake pedal. the engine and transmission were cold (external temp @ 34 degrees f) and i had traveled approximately .5 miles after starting the vehicle with about a 30 second warm up period. *tr

I bought my 2007 ford freestyle awd in june 2011 with approximately 72,000 miles on it. it started having a whining noise - almost like a pump - after the 75000 mile mark passed. i was not able to purchase an extended warranty because they are not available to purchase after 75k miles. i addressed the noise complaint with a mechanic and after replacing the power steering pump, the noise did not subside. a couple of months later, the traction control light would come on intermittently for no reason; but then go off once the car was restarted. the noise increased slightly, and 2 days after the increase in noise, the transmission failed suddenly. i was driving at approximately 45 miles per hour on the road, and the wrench light and traction control lights both went on and the rpm's went through the roof while acceleration slowed. i was able to get to the side of the road because i had enough speed going from seconds before the transmission failed. no other gears worked. after the vehicle was towed to the garage, i was told the transmission was completely wrecked; and this problem is one that the transmission technician has seen often from ford freestyle's. i contacted ford customer relations and they told me that there was no assistance that they could offer me. online automotive forums are packed with complaints from customers who had similar experiences to mine - transmissions failing long before they should; and often in a timeframe when no extended warranty is available. now, i cannot replace the transmission with a used one because it is likely it will fail again; and my only logical purchase is to get a ford remanufactured one for $4000+ because it is the only one with a 3 year warranty. losing a transmission is dangerous - had i been going uphill slowly; been driving in bad weather; or in any other likely situation, it could have been much worse. *tr

Throttle body failure. *tt

My 2007 ford freestyle has been surging over the past year and a half. at first it was very intermittent. now it is almost every time i use the car. i took it into the mechanic and he said that ford is having issues with the cvt transmission. so far there as not been a recall. he said he can't fix it because he cannot get the parts. my car with lunge forward when i turn it on. it also will surge when i go into reverse. today when i was dropping my youngest son at school it lunged forward in the area where children around. i had a difficult time controlling the car. it now is becoming a bigger safety issue. why is ford not recalling this car? it is not safe! what does it take to get this taken care of? my concern is someone is going be severely injured due to this problem. before this issue i was very happy with my freestyle. now i am so scared. ford please help! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that when shifting into drive, reverse or park, the transmission made a loud noise and caused the vehicle to jerk. the vehicle was taken to a transmission specialist, who performed a diagnostic and advised the contact that the cvt transmission was defective and would need to be replaced. the transmission was not replaced. additionally, the vehicle abnormally accelerated several times. the throttle body was replaced and the failure was corrected. the vin was not available. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure and current mileage was 160,000.

A year ago i was experiencing the latest recall on the throttle body for freestyles, took it to the dealership and they said i needed a new transmission. a year later after many repeated lunging occasions my transmission has now made my car undrivable. i want to bring to attention that o believe as well as some of my local mechanics believe this throttle body issue to be a direct connection to the many transmission cases that have been brought to your attention. i unfortunately am a victim of this. i believe ford company should be liable for both these fixes they are product of faulty equipment that they put out for consumers to experience. i have seen in some cases as well as lived a case where while driving these issues with the throttle body and transmission have either cases accidents or nearly caused. please take this seriously and thank u for your time. *tr

Multiple times waiting on traffic at stop lights, stop signs or just waiting to turn. my ford freestyle will lurch forward nearly striking the car in front of me or propelling me into oncoming traffic and once nearly striking my wife while she was attempting to get into the vehicle. the freestyle will also stall in traffic while crossing intersections or simple pulling away from stops. *tr

We purchased the 2007 ford freestyle only one month ago from a dealer in blair nebraska who certified that there were no problems with the vehicle purchased. we have not owned this vehicle for more than a month. while driving today with the family (children included) down the freeway the vehicle stopped accelerating in the center of heavy traffic. lucky no accident was caused! the vehicle started lurching and then would not go over 25 mph. we are understanding that there are several complaints about this vehicle performing the same way with many others in class action and forums. *tr

We have owned this car for just over a year. for several months now, we have been having problems with the car surging/lunging. it happens without any notice, and you have to slam on the brakes to stop it. initially, i only noticed the problem when pulling into a parking space. the vehicle would lunge forward. in the last couple of months it has started lunging backward and forward, regardless of how fast i was going (pulling in, backing up, or driving down the highway at a steady speed.) once, the car lunged as i was backing up and hit another car. minor damage. not reported. it is starting to happen more often, and the car has also begun dying if it happens whole backing up. turning the car off and restarting it solves that. i've had to start parking further back in spots because i don't want to hit the car in front of me. this has indirectly caused cosmetic damage (coming out of a store twice i've noticed scrapes that look like someone backed into me.) i don't understand how this can be such a widely reported and potentially dangerous problem without a recall or even acknowledgement of the issue (if you call ford.) my car has lunged forward at red lights and stop signs toward oncoming traffic, as well as driveways with children nearby. it may only be a few feet, but even that can be deadly considering when the problem occurs most. *tr

On several occasions, my car has surged forward when i was moving at very low speeds when my foot was not on the accelerator. this seems to be worse when the air conditioner is running. on these occasions, the engine sometimes stalled and twice the wrench light came on. when the car was shut off and turned on again, the wrench light went off and the car started but it seemed to run a little rough. these incidents seem to happen months apart, but i have learned to turn off the a/c when driving at low speeds. this condition is especially dangerous when i am crawling through the line to pick up my grandchildren at school. on the last occasion both the wrench and the engine light came on. i took it to the dealer the next day. they diagnosed a computer wire problem (i think the computer analysis number is 19773) and a broken "anti-roll" mount. the cost will be $739.57 even though it is still under original warranty till october. from the comments i have been reading on the internet, this will still not fix the surging problem which i had never heard of before until a friend told me. my husband is a ford retiree and until now we have been very pleased with our car. it only has 48,000 miles. *tr

2007 ford freestyle lunges forward even when your foot is on the brakes. as you shift into reverse or forward with you foot on the brake, the vehicle lunges ahead. taken it to 3 different ford dealerships in austin texas and have been told that i need injector flush and gas and air filters changed which may result in problem going away. another dealer wants to change the throttle body assembly blaming the problem on ethanol in the gasoline. they also want to do the previous services as well. costs have ranged from 616.00 to 1200.00. found numerous forums about this issue with hundreds or more complaints about the same problems but ford is saying that this is not a serious problem or that they do not see many of these issues. the problem of lunging has been more apparent over the last 10,000 miles (car is at 86000miles) there does not seem. *tr

The car takes off even when in park. this has happened on more than one occasion. my husband or i can be sitting at a red light, stop sign, even in park in our driveway and the car will have a surge of going forward. this problem is extremely bad especially when we start the car or if we are idling with our foot on the brake. it is very scary. i reported this problem to my local ford dealer. i was told there was not a problem. *tr

I purchased a 2007 ford freestyle last year and with only 68000 miles it is now unsafe to drive. the last couple months my car started lunging forward when i would press on brake with the car in either reverse or drive. at first i thought it was my doing somehow but now i know differently. it happen one time while my husband was driving, we were going on vacation, we had stopped at a gas station to get a drink when the wrench light came on and the car stalled and lost power and die in the middle of the street. my husband and i decided not to take the car for we were not surewhat was happening and could not afford to be stranded somewhere and break down. it really starts acting up when it is really hot out or if it is parked and is idling for a little it with the ac running. after it has idled for a little bit you put the car in either drive or reverse and it will lunge forward. one time i almost hit a person walking in front of my car at a drive-in restaurant. my husband and i are now too scared to drive it. i thought it would be a great car for my family but now just want out of it for the safety of my family.. *tr

While attempting to park the vehicle, it lunged forward. the failure also occurred while at a stop light. the vehicle stalled various times. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the throttle body was cleaned; yet, the failure continued to occur. the vehicle was repaired the cvt transmission, but fix the problem. *tr

Pcm has needed to be replaced 4 (possibly 5) times; mileage on 2007 ford freestyle sel has 41,124 miles. last pcm and throttle body replaced at over 37,000 miles. ist repair august 2010; 2nd repair october 2010; 3rd repair decembeer 2010; 4th repair june 2011; 5th repair august 2011. dies while driving down road - twice on i75 at 70mph. no rpm's, no acceleration, wrench appears and car will not drive. ford roadside assistance will tow vehicle and last email stated vehicle is not under warranty (powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles)? each dealer has replaced parts but i had to pay a deductible under the extended gm major repair plan. should not have paid. ford refuses to take any responsibility. bought vehicle used at only 32,000 miles. *tr

Our 2007 ford freestyle has begun lurching when at a slow speed both in reverse and in drive. tonight it lurched forward while i was parking and i nearly hit the car in front of me. this kind of thing has also happened while backing up. it has happened several times recently. it then displayed the wrench warning light on the dash, which, according to the manual means there's a transaxle problem.

If you have your a/c on and leave your car idling for just a few minutes then when you put it in reverse or drive, it surges a few feet like 4 to 5 ft unless you really hold the brake down. it really seems to be getting worse as time goes on. *tr

The 2007 ford freestyle will sometimes lurch forward or backwards from a stop. in all cases the car was initially at a stop with my foot on the brake and when i took my foot off the brake, but before placing my foot on the accelerator, the car lurched forward if in drive or backwards if in reverse. the car usually lurched about five feet before i was able to stop it. sometimes the lurching was followed by the vehicle stalling and in the worst case the vehicle stalled, the check engine light and the service required light both turned on and i was unable to re-start the vehicle for several minutes. the lurching seems to be more of a problem on hot days. *tt

Our 2007 ford freestyle surges uncontrollably when idling. the dealer states that the throttle body is defective and needs to be replaced. *kb

I have a 2007 ford freestyle . the transmission has gone out in my car. i have experience unconditional "surging" while the car was in gear. i have gone without running the air conditioner, thinking that was the "cause" of the car surging (taking off). the increase acceleration (revving) of the speedometer and rpm gauges were very alarming. the occurrences were many throughout the two years of me driving the car. the wrench appeared while i was driving, the car died. i pulled over and started the car back up. it hesitated after two tries, it finally turned over. i preceded to go to t my next destination three hours later, after transporting the athletes that i coach, the car stop as we were traveling down the road (on going traffic) .there is where "everything " went pieces. the car was not getting any gas, it would not go into drive nor reverse. i was scared and devastated, the kids were frightened, screaming out that we were going to die. i am praying that ford would make a justifiable decision on recalling this make and model before "tragedy" stumble upon their company, confused & concern. *tr

Vehicle experiences sudden unexpected acceleration (or lurching) when idling or moving at a very slow speed. occurs in forward or reverse directions, occurs more frequently in hot weather. *kb

Last year my car just stopped running, we thought it was the alternator so we put a new one in. that worked for a little while, but the humming noise returned and has gotten louder. upon further investigation into the car it is in the transmission part. it is quiet as long as it is not going down the road. as soon as you get any speed it whines terrible. it is so loud you can hear it over large equipment running. this is the second vehicle i have purchased from ford with the same failure. it needs to be recalled like the other transmissions. *tr

I have a 2007 ford freestyle which the ford dealership that i purchased it from new has completed all the up keep on it as part of the deal of tires for life which is good since the ford eats the tires and brakes but this problem started when i would pressing on the brakes and it would lunge forward but it would only do it every now again but it took a while before my husband witnessed it himself. then one very hot day my air condition just stopped working. i stopped at the gas station and let it idle while inside and when i came out and put it in reverse it lunged then just quit all together and a wrench light came on the panel. after calling my husband i tried to start it back up and it started but it had no power when i attempted to pull out from the gas station at a very busy intersection at the mall with me pushing the petal to the floor it died again. after restarting it the wrench light was off but the gas mileage went from 23 to 15 with little to no power but when i would let off the petal it would lunge forward as if i pushed on the gas petal and would take off and go faster. i had 5 children in the car and my husband out of town. i had to drive it home and i think that was the longest trip ever. i was scared of hitting someone or being hit when it would not accelerate when i would push on the gas from a red light. i had it towed to the ford dealership yesterday and today i got the quote for 1200.00 to fix the problem. which is said to be for a new throttle body, stark plugs, and intake gaskets. when they completed the last oil change about a month ago everything was fine so it seemed. i have 5 children and now i have no vehicle that i can trust to take them to their practices. i am very concerned about this and may trade it in because after doing some research today and finding out that alot of others are having the same problems and general safety concerns and that after having the throttle body replace it is not fixing the problem ...

I have a 2007 ford freestyle and its just getting worse and worse as the mileage goes up. the car seems to have a mind of its own. i cant even use my a/c or heater as this causes the car to lunge forward hard and eventually the car cuts off causing engine and wrench light to cut on. while backing into my parking garage i ran into the building because the car lunged back by itself, this could be very dangerous, could cause me to hit someone or something very badly. im afraid to drive my vehicle but don't have any other choice, have to go to work. this is scary, i need help with this. just bought this car don't have the cash to have it checked out. *kb

At a slow speed in either forward or reverse when i put my foot on the brake the engine speeds up and the car lunges forward or backwards and i have to hit the brake hard to stop it. this has happened several times and seems to be happening more often now. a couple of times the engine seeded up while the car was in park i see where ford brushes the problem off as being minor.i think this is a dangerous thing and should be corrected. if it happens while you are parallel parking it can cause an accident . also when backing out of a parking space you could get into an accident. with over 200 complaints i think something should be done before someone is seriously injured from this defect by ford. *tr

On monday july 25, 2001 the transmission in our 2007 ford freestyle would not change gears. when we would try to accelerate the engine would rev to very high rpm's because the transmission was not operating properly. we pulled over and had the vehicle towed to the nearest ford dealership. we are now being told the the entire transmission needs to be replaced, a repair they are saying will cost a minimum of $5800.00.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that the vehicle was parked when she heard a humming noise. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostics, where the technicians stated that the input shaft bearing failed and the transmission would need to be overhauled. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 69,150.

Vehicle lunges forward at slow speed i.e. parking lot. also occurs while backing and sometimes shuts off. very dangerous if someone happens to be around vehicle when this happens. *tr

I have a 2007 ford freestyle that lunges without touching the gas , when i park and sit for a moment as soon as i put it in drive it lunges forward, sometimes when im going to park in a parking lot and stop and let off the gas it lunges forward , i do not know why it does this but some one will get hurt if this is not fixed and ford dealer cant tell me why it does this . *kb
