My car lunges when i put the vehicle in reverse from park and also when i go from reverse to drive. the lunge is significant enough to hit a nearby vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the contact also mentioned that the vehicle intermittently stalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the transmission needed to be replaced and the throttle needed to be flushed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage and vin was not available. ...updated 12-24-13 *bf

When car is running there is noise coming from transmission, (has been verify by a ford dealership) that it needs a transmission. it has been getting louder and our ext warranty has expired according to dealer. cost of repairs is $6000 to $8000. this seems to be and issue with this vehicle, but ford motor company said they haven't heard of this, ford also said we shouldn't drive it, but we have no choice. car only has 64'000 miles. *tr

Started making noise like a helicopter. then it wouldn't change out of gear. it is showing the wrench and the engine light on. will not shift to different gears at all. i have 4 grandchildren that live with me and that rely on me to get them to dr appts, school, and other places. i also have a pregnant daughter that has had to rely on other people to get to her drs appts. i am very disappointed in the quality of this car. i would not recommend this care to anyone else. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle transmission started slipping recently. i have always taken good care of my car and my mechanic just told me that i need a new transmission. he also told me that there have been many problems with the 2007 ford freestyle transmissions. i cannot believe i have to replace my transmission which costs approximately $6,000.00 to replace. i will be contacting ford directly as well. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. when shifting gears or depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle jolted. additionally, the air conditioning unit would only circulate while driving. while at a stop, the air conditioning would not release cold air. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there may have been a transmission malfunction and a defect within the air lines, which potentially caused the air conditioning to malfunction. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

Over the last couple of years, i've noticed that the vehicle would jump a little when shifted into gear. occasionally, the same little lurch would happen at a stoplight. today, while stopped at idle the engine repeatedly revved over the course of about 10 seconds causing the vehicle to jump forward even with the brakes applied. shortly after, a similar problem occurred, but not as pronounced as the previous event. after the incident, the performance of the engine seemed to have degraded and the vehicle was only able to accelerate very slowly. *tr

I have had my 2007 ford freestyle since 2008. this car has been a money pit. i have had to get a water pump, ac compressor, and throttle body, now it needs an expensive faulty transmission replaced called cvt transmission. the car is now parked for safety and to avoid further damage. the issue that i have experienced is while my foot completely on the break, the car has darted forward with out my ability to stop it. i have had this happen with people walking in front of me in the cross walk while at the stop light and my car has darted at them. scary!! to say the least. i would not be surprised if anyone else has hit someone due to this problem. i don't drive the car anymore because it shut off on me while in traffic, unexpectedly, gratefully the person behind me was paying attention. i have fixed the ac compressor, throttle body, and water pump, i cannot possibly replace the transmission, i have 3 children and now without a car. i would not feel safe even after it is fixed. from reading other complaints this car is made faulty, and is going to fell me in some other expensive or dangerous way. to my knowledge ford has discontinued making the freestyle and is now making taurus in its place. they should have recalled every single ford freestyle, this car is dangerous!!!!!!!!!!!! it has been made to fail, i hope ford can restore my trust in them. i do not want any other ford because of this. *tr

I was driving at 40 mph and all of a sudden the car slammed into a low gear. wrench lights and engine light went on. dealer says parts are unavailable to fix and i need a new transmission. ($7000). *tr

The engine revs up & the car lurches forward, even when my foot is on the brake. the engine has even revved up while the car was sitting in park in a parking lot. i have to make weekly trips of 300+ miles due to my child's medical condition. i am starting to worry about our safety in this vehicle. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the vehicle exhibited a loud noise and a violent jerking motion. the vehicle was then coasted to the side of the road where the contact noticed large fragments emitting from the transmission with fluid leaking. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the transmission was replaced. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

i had bought a freestyle in 2012, the vehicle started make a noise from the transmission. had it checked out to were i was told it needed to be flushed. after the service the trans was alright for about another month and started again while on the highway.. the trans then proceeded to make a terrible noise and then started to sound like a helicopter and lost the drive gear. this transmission is not safe to be in a vehicle, also has been said by many employees that it is unsafe. i hope this can get looked into again and be taken care of! *tr

I just bought this car yesterday. it idles sporadically on park (often dies from surging) and lunges severely on drive and reverse. i have to avoid parking in front of other vehicles to prevent hitting them as my vehicle will shoot forward immediately even with my foot off the break. i have to hit the breaks firmly and quickly. it feels like the car has a mind of its own and revs hard at the most inconvenient times. i'm very afraid this will cause an accident! *tr

The cvt transmission in the 2007 ford freestyle are useless. i am not the only one having to replace a transmission way before time. i had a 1996 camry with 230, 000 miles on it and i never had to replace a transmission or the engine. now, i am left to replace a transmission that ford knew was a bad product (hence, stopping the manufacturing of the freestyle, revamping the transmission and other problems areas and putting it back into rotation as the taurus x). i still owe alot of money on this car. i know that ford finally did a rebate of sorts for the poorly designed throttle body and thankful i have received a refund for that expense. how long will it take for ford to compensate us freestyle owners with a horribly designed transmission? i really wished i had never given up my toyota camry. i felt safer in that car than my freestyle. *tr

My 2007 ford freestyle began lunging while sitting in traffic and soon after that began making a grinding noise. i took my car to a local ford dealership and was told that it would be around $5000 to pull and check the transmission. this is crazy. i had several problems with the lunging forward and now this noise which ford states they are not responsible for. the car only has 50,000 miles on it. i do believe this is a safety issue and now i'm left without a car to drive because i'm afraid i will do further damage to the transmission or even yet hurt someone with the lunging problem. i don't think i should be responsible for a problem that ford needs to correct and it is a safety issue. *tr

Put car in reverse veh lunged backward almost causing a crash. this has happened several more times wrench light comes on. received a recall notice from ford took veh in to dealer they said the recall only is for cleaning the throttle i needed a new throttle. cost was $850 i have an extended warranty but it did not cover this part. i feel if ford has a recall on this item it should be replaced if needed. i am very disappointed in what has gone on with this. have seen many complaints on this situation it is obviously a problem with this model. *tr

My vehicle "lunges" when put into reverse or park. vehicle stalls when pulling into a parking space. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while descending a hill at an unknown speed, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, who stated that the transmission needed to be rebuilt. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000.

While driving on freeway, rpm's increased excessively, pulled over, turned off and restarted car. seemed fine. about 2 months later, slowing and turning at about 20mph, rpm's increased excessively and lost speed. turned off and restarted, put into drive, but car would not move forward. stalled out when pressing accelerator. independent mechanic performed diagnostic said transmission needed to be replaced. towed to dealer for estimate - they said that a transmission from ford with a 3 yr warranty is on back order for two months! had just paid this off and our extended warranty just ended 2 months ago. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the transmission down shifted with a whining sound as the engine rpms increased excessively. the vehicle was taken to both an authorized dealer and an independent mechanic, whom both advised the contact that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 127,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, there was a clanking noise. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the technician stated the transmission would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 100,506. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. while driving approximately 35 mph, the transmission began to down shift abnormally. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who advised that the transmission would need to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that there was not a recall related to the defect. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

At 49,660 miles we had to have the throttle body changed because the car lunged forward and stalled out. on june 19, 2012 our 2007 ford freestyle was serviced with a transmission flush and fluid change, and a multi-point inspection. everything looked good. on nov. 5, 2012 it would rev up when driving and would not accelerate. after researching, we found out that the cvt transmission that was put in the 2005-2007 ford freestyle is a defective design that poses numerous safety concerns. ford does not even make the transmission any more, so our only choice is to pay over $5000 for a used/rebuilt one that may have the same problems. our car is only 5 years old. we have taken good care of it. we need a reliable vehicle and do not have the money to fix this. please have ford recall these faulty cvt transmissions and have more concern for safety and customer satisfaction. *tr

My freestyle cvt tranny , i need to warm it up for about 45 mins to an hour before it even moves. i had it looked at by ford and aamco transmission and ford says i need a new one for $6000 aamco says just rebuild it for $3500.i shouldn't have to get a new trns since the car i only had for 18 mons. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that a loud noise was emitted from the transmission and the vehicle erroneously accelerated after being placed in drive. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who stated that the cvt transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 79,102. the vin was unknown.

I had left the vehicle idling in park while i went to check the mailbox. when i gotback i shifted into reverse and when i took my foot off the brake the vehicle lunged back almost striking a pedestrian i have complained about this before and i notice the investigation has been open since may 2011 i have also noticed there have been alot of complaints about this problem on the web. just an fyi it seems to lunge when taking off in forward or reverse. i also noticed there is a class action suit against ford for this problem in california. *tr

While driving on vacation to our destination in south carolina, with my wife, daughter, dog, and myself and a car full of luggage. traveling at approximately 60 mph in the hills of west virginia, i applied more throttle approximately 3/4 of the way up one of the large hills. the cvt transmission 'downshifted' (actually it doesn't downshift, rather it just adjusted it's ratio quickly to improve torque output to the wheels -- i'm an engineer) and there was a huge clunk and the accelerator no longer affected acceleration. fortunately, i had enough momentum to crest the top of the hill and coasted down the hill on the other side. at 67,000 miles, our extended warranty of 5 years or 75,000 miles that we paid ford for had just expired months before. the outcome? a tow to a ford dealer, a 40 mile drive to the nearest car rental agency that was open (it was a saturday), certainly a big bill coming from the ford dealer, and a 6 hour delay in reaching our destination left me frazzled. maybe this is a one-off, issue, i thought. however, when i got to our destination today, i went on-line looking to see about typical repair costs for ford's cvt transmission and instead i am finding dozens of similar stories on-line about the freestyle cvt. what's going on here, i thought? how can this be occurring at a mileage so far below the mileage that the oems design for (at ford this is typically 150,000 miles). something seems amiss here to me with nhtsa regarding this component design at ford. i realize that you should and must prioritize the most serious issues first regarding injury and/or death but your mission also speaks of reducing economic losses. i encourage you to respond to me directly if at all possible. as an engineer in the automotive market for 20 years, i am very confident there is a design or manufacturing flaw that consumers are living with. *tr

The car started making a noise while in park or neutral. after a few weeks, began making a whining noise while going in reverse in addition to the noise it was making while in park and neutral. it is now in the transmission shop and costing me $2,500 to fix many of the components with the transmission including the bearings; torque converter, flush kit and some other things; along with labor. i have read where this transmission should be recalled. *tr

Air conditioning does not work when driving under 35 mph or especially when at an idle. air is not cool at all. then when i speed up, i have air again although occasionally car will start to die and dash lights up and then it surges and is fine again when going down the highway at higher speeds. this is mostly when it is hot outside. when cool or raining, the problem is better. *tr

My car has been lunging both in forward and reverse for the past week, and now it's not really accelerating when i press down on the gas pedal. a couple of times i have come close to hitting cars without even having my foot on the accelerator. *tr

When reversing out of and into various parking spaces, the vehicle lurches forward when i am not accelerating. i cannot detect a pattern but it has happened at least 6 times. *tr

I drive a 2007 ford freestyle, and my car lunges while my foot is slightly on the brakes. i cannot have my air-conditioning on while i'm on a stand still and my key ignition is lose and the car light comes on or the car will just stop. i told it to the dealership and all they say is pay for a diagnostic and get it fixed! this car is not safe to drive and i'm scared to continue to drive it on long road trip with my precious cargo. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle abnormally accelerated and then, lost power. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. the dealer advised that they needed to replace the control module. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was not under recall. the failure and current mileage was 96,000.

Car lunges when brakes, traveling forward slowly or even when sitting still with brake applied. also happens when changing from park to drive or reverse. started erratically but problem is almost constant now. we have surmised from other postings this is a throttle body problem , however replacement seems to rectify issues temporarily but reappears. *tr

My car will lunge forward when my foot is not on the accelerator. i have to slam on the brake to stop the motion before hitting the car in front of me or a pedestrian in a parking lot. i did an internet search and found there is an open investigation on this and thought i should report it on my car. this is very scary to me and happens quite often in a drive through or when i am backing out of a parking space. i am not sure what i should do next. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford freestyle. the contact was driving 45 mph when she heard a nose coming from the tires. the noise was most prominent when accelerating. the failure progressed until the vehicle became unresponsive to acceleration attempts. the vehicle was then towed to the dealer for diagnosis. the dealer advised the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and the current mileage was 83,000. updated 9/17/12 *cn the manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. updated 09/20/2012 *js

Bought 2007 used ford freestyle with 22,000 miles on jan 31, 2009 from ford dealership replaced throttle body in july 2011 and again in march 2012 due to surging forward replaced converter and compressor in the same 13 month time period as the two throttle body replacement wrench light comes on intermittently, took to dealership for them to diagnose hydraulic pressure unit failure, stated that part is no longer made therefore only option is to replace entire transmission at a cost of 5600-7000 dollars. this car is not safe, has surged forward multiple times, when taking off car will not accelerate which almost caused me to be t-boned with my four small children in the car, at times will not start or dies and have to pull over on side of road -- much more details documented if needed for investigation. *tr

I was stopped and waiting for an on-coming metro bus to pass. i had three passengers in my vehicle and the air conditioner was running. the bus needed to move into my lane to pass a car that was trying to parallel park. i had my steering wheel already turned to the right and stepped off of my brake to coast a little to the right. when i stepped off the brake, the vehicle lurched forward as if i had stepped on the gas pedal. there was a line of parked cars to my right, which is why i chose to not use the gas to move the car over. after the bus passed, i drove forward a few blocks at a low speed and realized i was unable to accelerate and the wrench light had come on. my vehicle was towed back the ford dealership and the problem was solved by the mechanic following tsb 11-10-21 for p061b. *tr

In june 2011 i had to bring my vehicle in for service, i noticed prior to my vehicle breaking down the vehicle would lurch even thou my foot was not on the accelerator pedal (in forward or reverse). the temp outside was in the low 90's. i had bought this vehicle in the fall of 2010. now today (18 july 2012) i am once again taking my car in for the same repairs (parts replacement). the temp yesterday was near 90, i had the air on and was backing into a parking spot when my vehicle lurched back instantly without my foot on the accelerator (i had to slam on the brakes) so i did not crash into the other vehicle in the stall behind the one i was baking into. all the sudden the engine stalled; i re-started the vehicle (and the check engine light came on and is now on constantly as it was back in 2011). when i left the parking slot i was in i attempted to go home; the vehicle lurched the whole time i was in the parking lot, once i was on the main road the vehicle would not accelerate normally; also the cruise control would not work. again; these are the same problems i had in 2011. i crept my car to the superior ford dealership where i had the work done before. i asked the service dept worker if she knew of any tech-issues or concerns and she said no....i was not buying it. *tr

I have had the throttle replaced last year around june 2011 and lately (only a year later july 2012) the throttle is accelerating on its on own once again when i'm parking my vehicle and while backing out (reverse). why isn't this on a recall list by now??? *tr

My transmission light came on and when i took it to the shop, they told me that i had to replace the entire transmission and that it would cost me $5000. they also stated that these cars are known for this. that is when i began to research this particular issue. i can not believe that this is a known issue and thousands of people are having this problem and ford has not recalled this. i understand this would cost ford a lot of money but they made a defected transmission and should be liable to replace them. they have plenty of money. people like me cant just afford $5000 to replace a transmission in a car. i have no idea what i am going to do. this is life altering for me. a single mom of five children and very disappointing to find out a name as big as ford is allowed to do this to people. *tr

After several hours of sitting in the heat (90+ f) the car failed to start. the engine never turned over, or made any sound indicating the starter was even doing anything. after closing the drivers door and turning off the a/c, the engine started up as it would normally. this has happened on 3 separate occasions. *tr

Bought vehicle used 8 days ago. on two occasions, once yesterday and once today, the vehicle seemed to throttle up with gas pedal not applied and foot on brake. both instances were in a parking lot. on both instances...outside temperature was over 100 degrees f and the air conditioner was on in both front/back modes. i simply put the car in drive and as i was turning out of parking spot, foot on brake maneuvering turn...the vehicle lunged forward. startled me on both occasions. i was able to stop vehicle, but some distance had occurred. fortunately, no one was in front of me. the "lunge" almost feels like you "stomped" the gas pedal to the floor for just a second. that is the best description of what the discrepancy feels like. i'm very worried...just purchasing this vehicle. it's the weekend, so i will be in contact with a dealership first thing. *tr

After enduring a summer filled with the typical surging issue, the transmission started making a light grinding sound in park and neutral. come december 2012, i received a recall notice from ford concerning the throttle body issue, and in january 2013 took it in for the recall service. about a week later, the cvt transmission's grinding noise had gotten worse, so i took it into the ford dealer here in town and they said i needed a new transmission to the tune of over $6000. needless to say, i do not have $6000 to put into a 6 year old car that i still owe $8000 on (bought it in 2010). i've had tires last longer than this transmission, which is currently at 62,000 miles. unthinkable that ford has produced such a flawed major component like a transmission, and not stood behind it, or supplies parts for it. i am livid, and after owning fords for over 30 years i have no idea what i will get next. i feel like i've been taken advantage of, and this freestyle is indeed a lemon. the car is unsafe to drive, and the cost to repair is not in line with the taurus x of 2008 which they introduced a transmission that actually worked. *tr

My freestyle has started to lunge forward at times when immediately taking my foot off the brake in forward or backward motion. after making a turn today it did it too, but this time the transmission light came on. it has happened many times over the last couple of months. the weather has been very hot too. i have a new teenaged driver so this is disconcerting.

My car (2007 ford freestyle) was stopped at the drive through and a local eatery. my foot was on the brake and the car started surging/lunging several times. i almost hit the car in front of me. it scared me. the wrench light and the engine light came on and the car cut off. i have the extended warranty, but of course the throttle body was not covered. upon investigating my problem, i found out the lunging has been a problem with many other freestyles and an investigation had been started. will there be a recall? this repair cost me almost $700 and i feel that ford should pay for this repair. any help would be appreciated! *tr

During the week of july 2, 2012, we were in cleveland, ohio, and it was exceptionally hot. 100+ degree temperatures every day, so we had the air conditioning on full blast. when driving the car at slow rates of speed -- in parking garages, for instance -- or reversing out of parking spaces, the car lunged as though i'd accelerated, but my foot was either not on the accelerator at all, or on the brake. the following week, temperatures cooled, and the lunging was not as noticeable. the week of july 16, 2012, it was again hot, and the symptoms started again -- lunging when driving at slow rates of speed, reverse, etc. during this particular week, though, the car would stall as well. it always re-started, though. on july 27, 2012, the car again stalled, and then would not go more than 50 mph. when we took it to the dealer, we were told we needed a new transmission. for the lunging issue, research online shows that might be due to a dirty body throttle, but two separate dealers say that it's definitely the transmission. *tr

On and off over the month of july 2012, when i put my car in reverse to pull out of a parking spot or driveway it surges/jumps without my foot touching the gas pedal. it happens only when i try and reverse. this keeps happening and i'm afraid one day i'm going to hit someone or something as i can't control the surges. also on july 7, 2012 the engine just cut off on me while reversing out of a parking space. i was able to start it back up again after it died. in december 2011 i had a new transmission put in. also in june 2011 i had to replace the ac compressor. *tr

Vehicle speed surged without touching accelerator. i had to depress braking hard to stop vehicle. vehicle cut off and when restarted the throttle light came on along with engine light. very dangerous. *js

While stopped the vehicle will lunge either forward or backwards without engaging the gas pedal. *tr
