Problems with 2017 Ford F-350 STEERING

On average, the 2017 Ford F-350 starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 28 315 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2017 Ford F-350

Death wobble. truck has 6000 miles on it, when i hit the expansion joint on the bridge at 55mph steering wheel shakes uncontrollably and nearly caused me to crash vehicle (happened 4 times). truck is new w/ 6000 miles on it. just happened again at a small pothole when i was going 35mph.

Driving at around 50 mph the steering wheel started to bounce and vibrate after hitting a uneven road surface. the bounce and vibration did not stop until the vehicle was completely stopped taking a major effort to keep the vehicle under control till stopped. this problem has happened twice.

While driving 45 - 60 mph on a county road, after hitting a small bump in the road, the steering wheel and front end began to oscillate violently. the truck was difficult to control and the shaking only stopped after reducing speed under 30 mph. on a road with a speed limit of 55 mph doing rush hour traffic.

Ford death wobble - at random times while driving at highway speeds (45-75mph) severe steering and front suspension shakes causing loss of control of vehicle. to gain control driver must brake heavily and reduce speed.

I was driving 65 mph on the freeway when i encounter extreme steering ocilation which everyone knows as ford death wobble. the steering shook violently with my kids in the truck. i had to slow down dangerously to 25 mph before it would stop shaking. this has happened over 10 times between taking it into my local dealer and them not properly repairing the issue. my wife and kids are no longer allowed in the vehicle until i can confirm it has been properly repaired. it is very dangerous, i can say that i think if my wife were driving the truck atleast on 2 of the instances it happened, she likely wouldnt have been able to keep it from a crash. 1 instance i was between lanes and braking with fast moving traffic. i do have video footage as well but couldnt figure how to upload an mp4 file.

My 2017 ford f-350 super duty 4x4 with 6.7 diesel has developed the death wobble. it has reached the point at just 50,000 miles that the steering becomes uncontrollable at highway speeds and requires rapidly slowing down to regain control. this vehicle is totally stock and has not been driven off road.

Problem # 1 vehicle shakes violently while in motion when it hits a small bump or pothole. it has happened few time in the last couple weeks, on 2/15/2019 while driving at about 60 mhm the vehicle hit a small bump and the vehicle from suspension started to shake so violently that i almost lost control of it. i had to apply brakes and reduce speed by 50% to stop the shaking. problem 2. front air monitoring system failure. it all the sudden started to give wrong readings in both front tires.

When driving over 50 miles per hour truck has "death wobble" steering wheel shakes and front end feels unsafe at highway speeds

While driving down i-5 between tacoma, wa and olympia, wa at 60 mph, i encountered a steering wheel oscillation that affected by driving. i slowed down between 30-35 mph before the shaking ceased. i drove safely home and crawled underneath and noticed i could move the drag link rod back and forth. the local ford dealership plans to replace parts but they are on back order. ford does have a tsb out on this matter.

It has happened on more than one occasion. will hit a bump in the road and the vehicle will start violently shaking. it will shake unitl you can get slowed down to about 20 to 25 mph. it is very scary. when it happens, it continues to happen to all small bumps in the road. the weird thing is the next day you can drive it on the same road and it will not shake. it is extremely difficult to maintain control when it happens. so far it hasn't happened when pulling a trailer but scared to find out what might happen if we are.

Violent shaking of steering wheel and front end suspension at speed over 55 mph when hitting a bump on the road.

My f-350 with no modifications and stock tires has repeatedly went into the "death wobble" or violent shaking after hitting irregular areas on the roadway. my truck seems to do it primary on bridges, even ones that barely have a transition and seem smooth. ford recently updated some parts at less than 30k miles. today, i went over three bridges in a row at 70 mph and each bridge made the front end shake violently. the third bridge was in a construction zone and a tractor trailer nearly hit me. you must slow to 30 mph to make it stop. this is an extreme safety hazard, you can't always slow to 30 mph in 70 mph traffic. this is a widely known problem and the nhtsa needs to do something about it.

Death wobble. at speeds over 50 mph truck goes into a "death wobble" after driving over small potholes or even freeway expansion joints. front end shakes violently and it is all i can do to hold onto the steering wheel with both hands. slowing down does not help until slowing below 45 mph. this has happened at least 7 different times. it happened 4 times in one day (1/18/19) driving down interstate 5 from sacramento to bakersfield, california while towing my 38ft 5th wheel trailer. this 2017 super duty f350 has all the factory towing options and heaviest gvw package. the factory installed tires have good even wear at more than 50% and total miles on the truck is 40,000. the truck is regularly maintained and serviced at the dealer where purchased (corning ford in corning california).

Truck shaking, was told tire inflation was not being maintained. all valve stems leaking since day i bought it. one tire had fix a flat in it when i bought it. it took ford 6 months to replace valve stems correctly. after this truck still shakes on any rough road, if hit any real ruff truck violent shake have to stop to get it to stop. now since tire pressure can be maintained since valove stems fixed. they tell me front tires need replaced from not maintaining tire pressures. that is why truck shakes. the truck has shakenough since the first month i owned it it march 2018, this has caused front tires to were on both outside edges. the truck shakes so bad, i have ran off 7 times, ran two other cars off road, and pulled over for suspected dui told officer what happened and if i didn't get it fixed he write me ticket defective equipment and deem vehicle unsafe to operate. always in motion, any speed, any ruff road, even going across briggs anything that is not perfect smooth road

While driving approximately 75mph on the highway, i drove across a joint in the pavement (small bump) and the steering wheel started shaking back and forth violently, and the entire truck started shaking, vibrating and jumping around the lane. i had felt a few steering wheel shimmies prior to the major vibration/shake, but they dissipated quickly. when the steering wheel shook violently, i had to pull over onto the shoulder and reduce the speed to about 40 mph before the shaking stopped. i then proceeded driving as i had before, noticing smaller steering wheel shimmying when going over bumps.

Driving over expansion joints on interstate and truck steering had a severe wobble, unable to control and almost hit the concrete median wall. slowed down enough to stop it.

When hitting a bump on the highway at 70 mph, the steering wheel developed a violent shimmy. i had to slow down and pull over to get the truck back under control. it happens a speeds over 45 mph for no apparent reason. it happens when you hit the right bump the wrong way. *tr

Coming a interstate bridge at 60 mph the steering wheel started shaking badly. i had to slow down to stop the shaking.

When you drive my truck down the road at 50 mph or higher it and i hit a bump it develops the death wobble. it has numerous times almost put in the ditch. very unsafe to drive.

Death wobble. at speed, truck shakes violently, having to slow down and sometimes stop before regaining control

Death wobble symptoms at highway speeds, violent shaking in steering and suspension. had to replace track bar, steering stabilizer, align front end to reduce/eliminate potential danger. poor response by ford on this one. happened numerous times, difficult to duplicate, possible serious injury if an i experienced driver of this vehicle is behind the wheel.

I own a 2017 ford f350 that has experienced death wobble. which is a violent shaking and vibrating in the front end. when it happens, the front end shakes so badly, you cannot even control the vehicle. my truck only has 20,000 miles on it, and this shouldn't be happening. it happens when driving on a straight road, when turning, when hitting a bump, going fast or going slow. i know many other ford owners have reported their death wobble, so i am joining them. something needs to be done.

At speed ove 60 on road bumps , bridge joints, rough roads the steering wheel will viotnely shake uncontrollably also called the death wooble.coast to about 50mph will stop shaking. scarey when it happens does not appear to have any vehivke control at while it wobbles. sone rough roads the bumps cause a vibration like it wants to do the death wooble then the right bump ir its angle on th road starts a death wooble. truck has had dealer visit #1 alingment, inspection, #2 steering damper replaced, #3 camber adjusted to service bulletin (tsb) #18- 2268 specs. #4 camver adjust addubg more camber. oroblen aeems to be reduced now but can still happen but now less vilonlty. than before. i feel like a test case they dont know how to fix.

2017 ford f-350 drw 4x4. while driving on us hwy 67 in arkansas (a very rough road) at 60 mph, towing a 15k lb 5th wheel rv, encountered a bump in the road and subsequently experienced a sustained steering wheel oscillation that lasted approximately 15-20 seconds until speed was reduced to approximately 30 mph and stable operation resumed. this oscillation has been experienced in the past a few times, but only for 1-2 seconds and always after experiencing a bump in the road. i presume this problem is the same as would be covered by ford technical service bulletin 18-2268 31 aug 2018

Steering wobble (some call it death wobble) on cartoon bumps it appears t induce a uncontrollable wo bue in front wheel steering. wheels will isolate fast and violently until vehicle slows. my vehicle so far happens int he 55 to 60 mph range and coasting without using brakes it will discontinue before 40mph. i notice on the highway that i ha e experia cedar this (3 times so far) that several of the typical cross ridges caused by ground heave or freezing will make steering wheel shale like 3 times. this is not normally experianced on most smoother black top roads. i feel the 3 shakes are a pre-wobble action and when a bump maybe is repeated in cartoon distance maybe it makes that 3 shake i've feel cross the controlled steering point and this shake/wobble happens. i have only had the wo bue happen while going straight but have felt this 3 shack pre-wobble several times when in a curve and feel like it could do it in a curve also should the needed trigger bumps be there. i do not have photo or video do hope to mount camera and have a video should it repeat in the future. ford dealer 1st visit fou d nothing but felt they could change alignment but needed to order a shim i believe. 2nd visit realigned using a shim and change steering dampner. 3 rd visit same answer but shims on backorder will change past 3/4 degree adjustment to 1 degree. hope to know more about this adjustment when they are able to do it.. service showed me a service bulletin outlining these steps to solve issue.

Driving at 65-70 mph on a concrete paved highway. hit a rough patch of pavement or expansion joint, and the front end began shaking violently, as if one or both of the front tires had flatted. i could see the hood shaking. the steering wheel also oscillated significantly. i let off the accelerator and lightly braked to about 45mph before the shaking and oscillation stopped. this occurred on december 7, 2018.

Ford f350 uncontrollable steering oscillation beginning around 12/3/18 @ approximately 20,000 miles on truck i began experiencing vibrations in steering. reached out to dealer from where vehicle was purchased new 1 year earlier. reported issues and was informed its a known issue but could not be seen till january 15,2019. on 12/16/18 while merging lanes on highway(approx.60 mph) steering wheel began shaking uncontrollably causing vehicle to swerve lane to lane. control was able to be regained only after slowing to minimal speed(assuming 20 mph or so). incident caused all immediate traffic to stop. vehicle was driven into breakdown lane . upon exiting vehicle ,a witness to incident also pulled over . as a owner of a 17 f250 he informed me of what is called deathwobble which he had experienced in prior months. with information a second dealership was contacted ,with there response being they are aware of possible causes but could take it immediately. vehicle was delivered on 12/20/18. diagnosed with a tsb 18-2268/06-22214. repairs will be made, however parts are back ordered till 1/29/19. truck was deemed unsafe by dealer an was recommended not to drive. as of 1/5/19 ford customer manager has been brought into case ,whom also stated they were aware of possible causes of incident yet reassured me she would be able to expiate parts.this appears to be a known problem on commercial weighted vehicles with the ability to lead to catastrophic damages to unknowing owners an general public.

Steering wheel shakes out of my hand . truck goes left when hitting bump on streets at a speed of 40 mph or higher

2017 f350 superduty drw, 27000 miles. while on the freeway at 65 mph, the steering went into an uncontrollable vibration (death wobble). the only solution was to reduce speed to approximately 10 mph. contacted the dealer and ford's customer service, and was informed that it must be witnessed by an official service technician before any assistance could be rendered.

2017 f350 kr srw lwb 21500 miles over the last 1000 miles or so i had noticed a little shimmy in the steering wheel when i'd go over a road cut, a patch, or expansion joint. well today i hit one at around 70 mph going straight on the interstate and the steering wheel just went freaking bizerk. it started osculating back and forth really quick. i tried to just grab it and hold it still to no avail. eased on the brakes and tried to get to the shoulder with traffic bearing down on me. at 45 mph it still hadn't let up.. as i hit the shoulder at around 40 it finally quit shaking.

I own a 2017 ford f350 4x4, at the time of the incident the vehicle had around 65000 miles on it. i was driving down the interstate at 70 mph, as i crossed over the transition on to a bridge a violent vibration began in the front axle/ tires. vibration was so pronounced it was shaking my hands from side to side on the steering wheel. i quickly decelerated to gain control of the truck. vibration subsided around 35mph. this happened a few more times and i took the vehicle to the dealership where i purchased it. initially they could not recreate the issue. after a drive over a bridge entrance at speed they were able to see the issue i described to them. they replaced some steering components. after driving the vehicle for two days, following the repairs, the issue returned. currently vehicle is being returned to the dealership for the second time. i have seen numerous other similar concerns documented on line, but the dealership explained to me ford has not issued a recall or tsb on the issue. so for i have spent $450.00 in parts and labor for a repair that has not corrected the issue. not certain it is safe to continue driving vehicle.

Yesterday while crossing a bridge my truck started shaking violently and uncontrollable until i had slowed to below 45 mph. this 'death wobble' as it is know is very dangerous. luckily no cars were near me and i was able to let off of the throttle and hold on to the steering wheel until the truck stopped shaking.

On nov. 7 and nov. 24, 2018 while driving my 2017 f350 super duty diesel truck i crossed freeway bridge transition strips at 70mph, at which time the front end of the truck went into what is commonly referred to by owners as the "death wobble". the front end of the truck began to violently shake up, down and sideways. these violent vibrations were obviously felt in the steering wheel, which also began to violently shake, nearly taking the wheel out of my hands when the event first started. the vibration did not stop until i was off on the berm and reduced speed to approximately 30 mph. these occurrences obviously caused not only a safety hazard for me, but for every vehicle behind or beside me at the time. the only way to stop the problem is to immediately reduce speed, which is extremely dangerous at highway speeds of 70 mph, even more so if towing a trailer or camper. this issue can very easily cause vehicles with this issue to lose control resulting in an accident. this problem is widely known, going back years, and owners have said tsb 18-2268 does not correct the problem. ford needs to correct this problem, and owner's online don't understand why the nhtsa allows this problem to persist.

When hitting bump in road at 60mph or more front end starts to wobble.

After hitting an expansion joint on the highway at approximately 75mph, entire vehicle front end started wobbling/oscillating violently. steering wheel was almost impossible to hold onto and was shaking back and forth rapidly. condition was remediated by a panic brake on a busy highway down to approximately 30mph where steering resumed normal operation. issue also occurred earlier the same week when hitting a pothole at approximately 50 mph on an empty side road with same effects and remediation - panic brake and slow to 30mph to stop the condition.

Front steering death wobble at highway speeds after hitting small bump transitioning asphalt to concrete over bridge. has happened multiple times over two weeks, to the point of losing control of vehicle. extremely difficult to control and bring truck to a safe stop. took to dealer and they replaced several steering components referencing ford tsb 18-2268. when i originally called dealer they stated there were no recalls or tsb notices on my truck.

Highway speed, hit slight bump in road and violent shake/shimmy started. only way to stop the shake was to slow down to 15-20 mph while pulling over. unit had been perfect and trouble free until approximately 35000 miles. took to ford dealer where they reffered to a tsb 18 2268 but wanted me to pay $1200 to correct as buy the time they made appointment unit had in excess of 36000 miles and warranty has expired. this is a known by ford defect and a dangerous safety issue!!!!

At ~25,000 miles, truck begins to shake uncontrollably after hitting any small defect in the road if traveling over 60 miles per hour. very easily could result in death or serious injury if it were to occur in heavy traffic or around a sharp curve on the highway. trucks error message "service advance track". mechanic attributed it to failed steering dampers. began november 2018, became a serious safety hazard in january 2019.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle shook violently. the contact had to let up off the accelerator pedal to regain control of the vehicle and pulled off to the side of the road. the contact noticed that all of the steering components were very loose. the vehicle was taken to williamsburg ford (701 e rochambeau dr, williamsburg, va 23188, (757) 229-2411) where it was diagnosed that all of the steering components needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was called and stated that they would get back with the contact regarding reimbursement. the failure mileage was 41,000. *tt consumer states truck shakes violently when driving. updated 12/13/18 *jb

I own a 2017 ford f-350. this truck is fully stock, no mods of any kind. no abuse. maintenance is always on time and tires are always rotated and balanced every 5000 miles. in may 2018, i was driving along a straight moderately bumpy road at about 40 miles per hour and my truck went into the death rattle. the front end shook so hard i almost lost control. i had to come to a complete stop to get the shaking to stop. the mileage was approximately 24,000 miles. it hasn't happened again until yesterday, 10/10/18. i was traveling on a newly paved road at 30 mph. i hit a slight bump and the truck went into the death rattle again. i had to slow down to about 5 mph to regain control of the vehicle. i had about 3 miles til i got home. i crawled at about 15 mph with no problems. i stopped at the stop sign about 60 feet from my home, started to take off at an extreme crawl and it started shaking again. the mileage was approximately 36,036. i have children and this is dangerous! my kids are always with me and i can't risk their lives because ford hasn't come up with a solution to this problem. someone needs to make ford fix this. it is a design flaw, as i have come to find out. this is going to kill someone.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. while driving 65 mph over a rough, bumpy asphalt road, the vehicle and steering jerked and shook violently. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the "death wobble". there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to bozeman ford lincoln (2900 n 19th ave, bozeman, mt 59718, (406) 587-1221) where it was diagnosed that a steering stabilizer was needed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 36,000. the vin was not available.

My 2017 ford f350 has now experienced three events referred to as "death wobble" or shimmy which causes severe shaking of the entire truck and especially the steering wheel. first event in bakersfield calif where i hit consecutive bumps in the freeway while traveling 65 mph. had to slow to less than 40 mph to get it to stop. second event was towing my 5th wheel down a 6% grade into verde valley arizona. heavy braking caused the same death wobble in addition to the truck pulling to the right. speed was 65 mph. third event was leaving mccarren airport in las vegas nevada where hitting a freeway bridge transition caused the death wobble again. truck has been to local ford dealership. alignment checked ok, tracking bar torque ok, wheels ok, ball joints ok. brake hose did not pass pressure test and was replaced under warranty. dealership cannot find cause. i sincerely believe this is a design issue or oem parts installed at factory were defective at time of installation. this is my fourth superduty 4x4 supercrew. my other three never had this issue. in investigating this issue i found two automotive related websites where 35 plus late model superduty owners complained about this same problem. *tr

On 7/22/18, my 2017 f350 (crew cab, long bed, diesel) experienced what is apparently being called "death wobble" 4 times within 20 minutes, while driving on interstate i-15 north of salt lake city, ut. the truck had approximately 27,800 miles on it at the time. in first instance, my speed was about 65 mph, and in the following 3, it was between 50-60 mph. the section of highway was bumpy in all cases. the symptoms were extreme and violent vibration coupled with virtually uncontrollable steering, with the entire front end of truck (and steering wheel) shaking violently, practically bouncing up and down. braking did not stop the shaking, and seemed to make it worse. it would not stop until i had coasted and very carefully applied brakes until i got below 20 mph. fortunately, the road was straight in all 4 occurrences, or i feel i would have gone off the road. upon exiting interstate and inspecting front end, i noted that the "death wobble" had actually torn small chunks out of my front tires (oem goodyear wrangler at, lt275/70r18e), along with other cracks and divots; there was no such damage to the rear tires. i did not drive it over 40 mph after that, until i had taken it to a local ford dealer to be inspected the next day. they said it needed an alignment, and replaced the tires, and since then it has not reoccurred. this had actually happened about 3 times prior to this, over the span of 3 months, with weeks between, under similar driving conditions, but i incorrectly assumed it was just due to combination of stiff suspension and rough road. i own and tow an rv, and it has never happened while towing, regardless of speed (i never exceed 65 mph when towing.) when the dealer serviced the truck, they did not acknowledge the problem and said they could not reproduce it, but i do not believe they drove it over 45 mph in test driving.

This trucks front end shakes terribly at highway speeds, to the point of being dangerous, on improved gravel roads and speed over ten mph it's almost impossible to control. this problem started at approximately 15000 miles and has gotten worse now at 34000 miles.

On 3 different occasions while driving approx 60mph, i drove over a bump and the steering wheel/front end experienced uncontrollable shaking, commonly called a 'death wobble.' problem continued until i slowed the truck to 10 mph. first time it happened the truck only had 17,000 miles. after the 3rd time the dealer replaced steering components. after the repair the truck continued to have minor problems (quick short wobble) but the dealer said that was part of the repair. on memorial day weekend the full wobble returned. i dropped the truck off at dealer because it was too unsafe to drive ( i have teenagers and refuse to risk their lives). i attempted to return the truck to ford under the state lemon law. ford refuses to take back the truck but cannot guarantee it is fixed or safe.

The truck shuts off at while running. this happens at both highway speeds and while stopped. i have taken it to the dealer but they cannot find out what has happened. when the truck shuts of the steering and brakes are not working to the level that is needed to stop the vehicle or control the vehicle, and it appear they are power assisted from the motor, so when the motor stalls they are lost. *tr *dt updated 10/19/18*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the death wobble. while driving 65 mph, the steering wheel shook violently without warning. the contact depressed the brake pedal to slow the vehicle down to 20 mph and the steering wheel began to shake less. the contact was able to drive the vehicle to his destination. the failure recurred numerous times. the contact called vern eide ford lincoln (located at 2300 n main st, mitchell, sd 57301, (605) 996-5614) where an appointment was scheduled. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer and was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 18,000.

Started vehicle, placed in reverse to back out of driveway, at end of driveway stepped on break and did not stop, pressed hard and stopped. put truck in drive to get back on driveway and almost hit garage door as breaks did not work normally so i pressed emergency break. shut off truck, restarted and breaks worked fine. thought it was a computer glitch and restart corrected. drove next several days with no problem, then on way home from store i again lost normal breaking and had no power steering . i was doing approximately 30 miles per hour on a city street. pulled over, shut off truck and restarted but this time that did not correct problem. drove about 1 mile to ford dealer and turned over for repair. the vehicle only has 17k miles on it. they diagnosed the power steering pump to be bad and replaced. i have not had problem since the repair. i have about 30 miles since repair. the problem is that i received no failure or warning lights, started intermittent and if i would of been driving other different conditions i would likely of been in a serious accident. if my wife was driving she would of not been able to stop or steer the truck. i have normal strength for a 60 year old man and i could barely stop and steer the truck. if i was pull an rv i would of been in a very bad situation. i am concerned that there was no warning and concerned that after first failure it seemed to reset thus assuming a computer issue. seems strange that a mechanical pump failed and then started working for several days before failing again. after the first failure that corrected itself, i did go to ford dealer where i bought the car and they said they were not aware of any issues but if it happens again bring the truck in to be checked. unfortunately, i was 60miles from my purchasing dealer so went to closest ford dealer for the repair.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. while driving at various speeds the steering wheel vibrated and there with an abnormal clunking noise detected. there were no warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to (sames kingsville ford 2501 us-77, kingsville, tx 78363 (888) 903-4562) where it was diagnosed that the steering shaft needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred the manufacturer was contacted but no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 2,000.

When traveling at speeds greater than 50mph, truck will randomly respond to going over a slight bump by beginning to shake. the shaking increases to a violent level. the entire truck shakes violently, especially the front end and the steering wheel. the only way to regain control of the truck is to come to a nearly complete stop. all three times this has happened the truck was on a highway. the last time it happened the truck was on a bridge crossing a river with heavy traffic all around. it is a complete miracle that the surrounding drivers were able to avoid hitting our truck since the speed limit was 65mph, and we had to slow to 22mph before the shaking stopped. this first happened in oct 2017. the dealership repaired it, but it happened two more times on feb 12, 2018. the truck has only 24700 miles on it.
