Problems with 2017 Ford F-350 STEERING

On average, the 2017 Ford F-350 starts to “feel” problems with the STEERING and its various aspects after 28 315 miles.

Recently reported STEERING problems on 2017 Ford F-350

I have a 2017 ford f-350 super duty. over the last two months i have had two situations during acceleration on a highway where the vehicle almost shakes/vibrates apart on the front end. i have reported the issue to ford two times now. when it first occurred in nov 2019 with 19k miles on it, they told me they never heard of this issue. when it happened again on the 29th of december i took it back into the dealer and mentioned that i almost lost control of the truck and the wife refuses to drive it on a highway. they admitted there is an issue. either my truck or their design is unsafe. massive wobble/vehicle vibration - if i was in a corner i would have been in an accident.

Regularly experience violent shaking in front of vehicle at highway speeds when hitting a bump in the road, such as bridge joints. multiple steering components have been replaced, including tires, however problem persists.

Truck is once again experiencing what is widely known as the "death wobble". truck was supposedly repaired in nov 2018 per tsb#18-2268. when vehicle hits rough road or bridge transition strips on highway the front end begins to violently shake side to side and up and down, causing this to be transmitted to the steering wheel. when this happens at the only way to stop it is to quickly slow to approximately 30 mph. when forced to do this on a highway i've nearly caused accidents due to the required quick deceleration. this is a widely reported problem that ford wants to blame on the vehicle owner, saying that it is the result of improper owner care or not having enough weight in the bed of the truck!! owners are dumbfounded that a recall has not been issued on the ford super duty trucks. this is an extremely dangerous fault that is going to eventually result in tragic accidents if it hasn't happened already. dealer has had my truck for over 3 weeks now, stating that ford is backlogged on sending required parts to repair. totally unacceptable when the vehicle is required for business.

Steering or suspension goes into a violent shacking often referred to as death wobble after hitting certain bumps on a roadway. bumps appear to involve both front tires possibly when one tire hits first similar to bridge joints or pavement breaks. at highway speeds about 55 or greater, only had happen when driving straight. the steering while shakes back and forth about 1-inch each way with truck body shaking. it appears to worsen if breaking hard so slow deceleration has been my practice. when towing trailer have used manual application of trailer brakes to drag truck slower which seems better. experienced when driving truck only and also when towing a fifth wheel 12k pound trailer or a 7k pound hitch pull box trailer. truck weighs about 9k pounds. ford dealer has serviced unit according to service bulletin #18-2268. four visited for repairs and a few additional visits for inspection before ordering parts. ford company issued a case number cas-17515150-l3w8h1. this case case closed by ford following the last repair with out confirming with be it had been fixed. i presently had ford dealer order new tires for install on 10/28/2019 then hope to have alignment checked again as well look for any new signs of wear on components. last trip from eminence , mo to dixon il experienced this death wobble 7 times. combined vehicle weight about 22k pounds.

When driving at normal road speeds, between 45 and 70 mph, when vehicle encounters a bump while in a slight turn, the steering wheel starts to "shimmy", or oscillate, violently, making vehicle directional control very difficult. dealer has stated they corrected the problem but the problem has returned and seems to be worse.

At 17,000 miles just started the death wobble. hit a bump in the road, it happened pulling a trailer going 62 mph. had to slow down to 30 mph to regain control of vehicle.

Had truck repaired in april of 2017 with death wobble. today it is back in for the same problem. service person said there is no 'fix', just keep bringing it back n. guess i will until it kills me in an accident! same problems as before, front end goes crazy when hitting a bump or bridge xian's ion joint at freeway speeds.

In oct. 2019 i was headed to texas from minnesota with my 2017 f-350 diesel with only about 28,000 miles on it and was pulling my 43 ft 5th wheel trailer, i hit a bump in the hwy while traveling 70 mph, the truck started to shake violently, i had to apply the breaks hard to get it to stop shaking and all most lost control of the truck and trailer. it was a good thing no one was next to me as i ended up on the shoulder of the road and had to bring the truck down to around 30 mph before it stopped shaking. this happened one more time while on my way to texas and once again it shook violently till i got it slowed down to 30 mph. i put the truck into a ford dealer in mineral well's, tx and they replaced the steering stabilizer. i left tx and was going to az, i was there for a few months and had to return to mn for 1 month but left my 5th wheel trailer behind and just drove the truck back, then on 1/29/2020 i headed back to az with my truck and not pulling anything. on my return trip to az i hit a bump on the hwy at 70 mph and the truck started to once again shake violently and had to hit the breaks and get it slowed down to 30 mph before it stopped shaking, there was only about 6,000 miles on the truck since it's repair. now i'm back in :az ( 1/31/2020) and i have a appointment at the ford dealer here on 2/13/2020 to repair this problem once again. this shaking gets so bad that i don't know if i want to keep the truck, someone is going to get killed if ford doesn't get this problem corrected.

I have sever shaking while on the freeway after hitting a bump or the road changes. i have taken it into the dealer 4 times now in the last few months to try and solve the problem. it is a safety problem that has almost made me lose control of the vehicle. as of right now the problem is still there with no fix from ford.

When traveling at highway speeds the truck violently shakes and is uncontrollable after hitting bumps or potholes. in order to regain control of the vehicle, hard braking must be applied to reduce speed rapidly. this has happened several times while driving at highway speeds. the vehicle has been to three different ford dealerships and had three different supposed service bulletin fix repairs performed. yet here we are still with the death wobble.

2017 ford f-350 superduty truck experienced severe steering/suspension wobble when encountering bumps in roadway. four incidents occurred, with three occurring in the sept. 18-26, timeframe in 2019.while traveling at 65 to 70 mph. vehicle was hard to control during the wobble, and required slowing to 20-25mph to stop the shaking. other vehicles following me at the listed speeds were required to brake quickly to avoid collision with my vehicle. all incidents occurred on interstate highways. vehicle mileage was approx. 17000 miles at the time.

Another victim of death wobble. it's happened twice, once with truck alone (january 2019) and another time pulling a 5th wheel trailer (9/22/2019)...both downhill in the mountains. the truck just started shaking violently until i was able to slow down enough to make it stop. the first time the dealer installed some caster shims, the 2nd time they said everything looked fine and no issues with the suspension.

On multiple occasions we have hit a bump/pothole and it causes a severe death wobble. the last time it almost caused an accident. we have taken it in 3 times and they couldnt find anything wrong. after googling it,it is apparent that there is a issue.

While driving on the freeway i crossed an expansion joint where there is a bridge, the vehicle because to shake and bounce all over the lane, it is scary and dangerous. i had to slow down to ~30 mph in the middle of traffic on the freeway to bring the vehicle back under control. the vehicle only has 26,000 miles on it and has already been to the dealer for service for this issue in the past.

This truck has the death wobbly. going over r/r tracks steering wobblys going around a curve at 75 mph hit a bump an steering wheel started whobbling almost hit car in center lane. on going issue in the ford dealer they said they don't have a permanent fix an they want me to pay 500.00 dollars to fix it;

Driving down highway around 75 mph and ran over a rough patch in road and my steering wheel started shaking violently. whole truck shook. slowed down to 60 and it stopped. pulled over to inspect under front end and rear. couldn't find anything out of place. got back on h.w. and got back up to 75 and no shaking. hit another spot on a bridge where pavement connects bridge and it happened again. took to dealership and they told me it that i needed new tires. which i did. replaced with factory michelins. they also put a new steering damper on. got truck back several days later and while driving under 60 there are no problems. above 60 the steering starts shaking a bit, but not like the death wobble. at 75 mph it is the same, along with what seems to be a rear end vibration. called dealership and they said a part was on back order and would call. haven't heard back in months. so, i called and they said the part is on back order. having to borrow a car from mother in law to get around. i purchased a warranty that will expire at 60,000 and was told that if i go over, it will still be under the original claim and i would not have to pay the $75 deductible. i will get that in writing hopefully this week. with these vibrations, it know it will wear out other front end parts like ball joints and tie rods that hopefully will be replaced at no cost. doubtful! this is my 4th ford truck and have not had any of these problems with other trucks. i have only 57,000 miles and this should be a recall and ford is running from it. very disappointed. please help!

My 2017 ford f 350 xlt 4x4 sb has 30,000 miles. on tues. morning my wife and i were driving back to mesa,az. from panguitch, utah. a couple miles into our trip , while driving 55 mph we hit a bumpy area of the road and the truck starting shaking violently, like having a blowout. i had to pull over to see what what was happening. i could see no damage to any tires , so we kept driving and it happened again less than 10 minutes into the drive.. this time i slowed down until i regained control. we did not have any more issues the rest of our trip to mesa. we were pulling a 40 ft. fifth wheel #13,500. at the time. we were just finishing up our summer trip when this happened. this happened about 45 days earlier just outside cheyenne, wy., after reading a lot of similar incidents from other ford owners. i felt that i needed to report this issue

I own a 2017 f-350 super duty with 28,000 miles. experiencing "death wobble" multiple times per week, typically at speeds between 50-70 mph and hitting even the slightest bump or uneven-ness in the road. the shaking in the front end is so violent that the vehicle is not controllable and is extremely dangerous to the point that my wife refuses to drive it. the only way to regain control is by slowing down to approx 30-40 mph until the shaking subsides. yesterday, while driving on the highway, the wobble started and pulled me into the next lane, nearly causing an accident. slowing down in order to regain control caused another near miss as cars were having to swerve to avoid me as i tried to regain control from the wobble. this was an expensive vehicle and it is practically new with very low miles - this should not be happening and in doing research its appears this is a very prevalent issue with these trucks and ford is aware of the defect and is not doing much to address it. i need to be able to drive this vehicle and i need it to be safe and this defect does not allow that. there have been no modifications to this vehicle - it is 100% factory stock.

Experience phenomena called death wobble when traveling at highway speeds. typically occurs when i drive over a bump which causes the effect. extremely dangerous. i had taken the vehicle in multiple times to galpin ford factory authorized service center in north hills ca to have the issue corrected. i have extensive records of all steering related components replaced but the issue continues to occur. i am aware there currently is a class action law suit against ford for this exact issue as this issue is systemic with 2017 and 2018 ford f-250 and ford f-350 trucks.

Vehicle developed knocking in front end at 5,000 miles. at around 10,000 miles began uncontrollable shaking in the steering when hitting a bump at 75 mph on highway. this would stop by slowing down to 40 mph. this continued until the front stabilizer was replaced by ford at around 15,000. vehicle now has 20,000 miles on it and has again started shaking uncontrollably as stated before. fords fix is to replace it again with the same part that has already failed twice. i have heard of the same issues from other people is similar makes and models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 ford f-350. while driving approximately 45 mph and above, the steering wheel began to shake violently and the vehicle exhibited the death wobble. krause family ford (located at 195 woodstock pkwy, woodstock, ga 30188, 877-808-3640) replaced the steering damper, but the failure continued. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided case number: cas-24549-129-j988w2. the approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

When hitting a bump between 50 to 60mph, the truck front end started bouncing wildly and became difficult to control on any type of road. this happened several times miles on the vehicle was between 27,000 and 30,000. ford dealer described this as the "death wobble", literally. was fixed by replacing steering damper. this event almost caused me to lose control of the vehicle at highway speeds. very dangerous.

Truck goes into death wobble. was returned for repair under warranty at 35,091. the wobble came back and is a danger. we have 3 f350, 17 and 18 models and they are all having death wobble problems. these problems pose a danger and should be recalled, it is a design flaw. we have contacted ford (ref# cas24123991) to make the aware of the issues and to get them to repair.

While traveling at 65 mph on i-80 transitioned from tar to concrete and experienced severe death wobble. almost lost control of vehicle. steering wheel was almost ripped from my hands. was able to get onto shoulder of highway and stop vehicle. resumed travel and went directly to ford dealer in reno,nv. they were unable to immediately inspect vehicle so i traveled back to fallon,nv. to dealer. ran 55mph 60 miles with no further incident. i do feel that if i had not been traveling in the inside lane on i-80 i would have been involved in a deadly accident. this is a safety issued that needs to be remedied immediately!

Truck shakes violently after hitting a bump on the expressway. thought i had a tire blowout.

Death wobble from 50 to 70 mph if you hit a small bump in the road it will set the truck off in to an uncontrolable shake, it is considered very dangerous, ford replaced the steering absorber but that made no difference,, i am now communicating with ford corporate office as the dealership is unable to do any work without the coporate office permission

2017 f-350 encountered sustained steering wheel oscillation (death wobble) on three different occurrences two occurred in a three week period. two occurred traveling on the highway at 65 mph and driving over an expansion joint. one occurred on a divided city road at the speed of 55 an running over a manhole cover that was not level with the roadway. two of the events were in high traffic areas and ended in near collisions. ford tsb # 18-2268 acknowledges the problem and provides corrective action; however, this situation is dangerous and should be addressed through a recall process. vehicles must slow to approximately 25 mph to regain control, a difficult feat if the individual is driving on a multi-lane highway surrounded by traffic traveling at highway speeds. problem is being correct by ford; however this needs to be addressed prior to the condition presenting itself.

The complaint is sustained steering wheel oscillation after hitting rough pavement on an expansion joint above 72 km/h (45 mph) making it hard to keep control of the truck.

I was pulling a 12,000 lbs 5th wheel trailer on a highway mountain pass when i went over an expansion joint at about 55 mph and the vehicle started a death wobble. the vehicle violently started shaking and i struggled to maintain control of the truck and trailer barely being able to stop the vehicle on the shoulder before going over a cliff with my family in the vehicle. there were vehicles behind me that had to slam on their brakes to keep from hitting us.

I've experienced 5 "death wobble" incidents on my f350 with less than 10k mileage. this problem always happens at highway speeds crossing over uneven bridge expansion strips on a diagonal. the last time this happened, i was in the number two lane driving at freeway speed in busy traffic. i had to slow down below 30 miles an hour to regain control of the truck. this is a very dangerous issue that seems to be a common problem with ford superduty 4x4 trucks. it's the second time i've taken it to the dealership for repair. first time, ford replaced the steering dampener. now they are changing tie-rod ends. ntsb really needs to look at this dangerous situation and force ford to stop nickel diming repairs and fix this problem once and for all.

My truck has the so called "death wobble" whereas hitting certain bumps the truck's steering is uncontrollable. it has happened several times with mine. i almost hit the car next to me the last time it happened, going 70 mph down the highway. it will not stop until i slam on the brakes. this seems to be a huge problem with ford, but they will just tell you it's the tires being out of balance. i know that this isn't the case, however, i replaced all six tires at the ford dealership, but it has happened again. i cannot understand why a safety recall has not been issued.

Multiple instances ~15 of 'death wobble' where the truck and steering wheel shake violently. normally at speeds above 55 mph when hitting a bump or rough road. started occurring only when turning and hitting a bump, but now happening when driving straight. requires slowing quickly to below 30 mph to stop shaking, making it very dangerous for myself and other drivers on the highway. stock f350 drw with 32k miles

I had several incidents with the infamous "death wobble" when the front suspension vibrates excessively resulting in loss of steering control and overall vehicle control. after the first three incidents i researched and found the death wobble thread on the internet. i took vehicle to dealer and they replaced a drag link and ball joint. the vehicle drove mostly normal for the next several months with only occasional front steering vibration after driving over a bump in the road. then on june 10, 2019 i ran over an expansion joint in a bridge on a corner going 45-50 mph and the steering wheel and entire truck vibrated to the point of losing control and going off road nearly into the ditch before i got the vehicle under control at approximately 15 mph. the vibration and oscillation was extremely severe with everyone in vehicle being tossed about violently. i immediately made an appointment to have vehicle inspected and dealership stated they knew of problem and referenced tsb 18-2268. they shimmed the suspension, adjusted the castor, and replaced the steering dampener to the tune of $624. i talked to three different ford customer service representatives and got nothing but a run-around. after truck was repaired, i was notified that ford would pay $335 for repairs since vehicle was out of warranty. ford customer service is horrible and i am very disappointed since this is a known problem and was not repaired correctly the first time. we could have been seriously injured or killed due to the violent nature of the vibration and loss of control. kendall ford in kenai was very accommodating and helpful in getting my problem solved but ford needs to take care of their customers and get these vehicles repaired before someone dies. there are many reports of this happening now with this vehicle. vehicle has 45,332 miles.

Truck has death wobble. after hitting a bump on the freeway steering wheel and front end starts to shake violently. requires slowing down to under 40 mph to stop shaking. very dangerous situation. this has happened numerous times. ford has inspected the front end and said everything looks fine. another ford dealer replace the steering stabilizer shock at my cost. problem still exists.

Was traveling on a 2 lane highway in a corner around 60-65 mph when i hit a small hole in the road and the steering wheel began shaking back and forth in a very unsafe fashion. truck only has 33k miles on it. i notice prior to the incident that in similar situations the steering became very "loose", but this last time it shook much more.

At 45-65 mph if the truck hits the slightest bump in the road the tires and steering wheel start shaking uncontrollably. you lose all control of the vehicle unless you can stop the vehicle before causing a crash. the first time this happened the truck drifted through 4 lanes before coming to a stop.

My 2017 ford f350 has experienced heavy steering oscillation (death wobble) starting at approximately 30k miles. the oscillation occurs while driving over 60 mph. the vehicle must be slowed to below 45-50 mph to stop the oscillation. reducing my speed to 45-50 mph on a highway with speed limits of 75 mph is very dangerous for my family. i have been to the dealership 3 times to resolve this issue and it has not been resolved. after the last visit, i replaced my tires that were not worn past the tread warning bars at the request of the manufacturer and now i have constant shimming of the steering while driving on the highway between 55-70 mph.

The steering on my 2017 f-350 occasionally becomes uncontrollable and shakes violently from side to side when hitting bumps at highway speeds. the dealer referred to this as " death wobble" ford has already attempted to fix it once by replacing the steering damper but the problem persists. the truck is completely stock with all original components and tires. ford is unwilling to make any more repairs to the vehicle at their expense. i have done quite a bit of research on line and this seems to be a very common problem with the 2017 and newer f 250 / 350 series trucks. the last time it happened to me was on tuesday, april 16, 2019 and i immediately took the vehicle to the nearest ford dealer- northside ford in san antonio, tx.

Driving straight at 60mph on road when i hit a small patch of snow. the front end of the truck started violently shaking, and continued to shake horribly until i got the truck stopped. i was doing everything i could do to stay on the road and not go in the ditch. dealer informed me that it was steering dampner.

Front tires oscillate back and forth when hitting potholes at highway speeds above 50mph, bridge overpasses anything that is rough. known as the death wobble for most people. truck becomes out of control shaking back and forth, having to slow the truck down almost to a stop. this issue started around 37k miles and has just gotten worse. now the dealer says my track bar with ball joint is ruined, steering stabalizer, 2 drag links 1 at passenger knuckle and 1 at the pitman arm. this repair is close to $1,000.

I was driving my ford f-350 pickup on the highway and hit a pothole. the whole front of the truck started wobbling and shaking to the point that i could barely control it. at first i thought i might have blown a tire or tow but that wasn't the case. i had to reduce speed since i wasn't in a position to pull over safely. i called ford and all they said was to make sure the tires were at the right tire pressure. luck for me i was able to make it home in one piece.

While driving on the highway about 50mph i passed over a small bump (roadway to overpass) in the road. the front end of my truck began to shake violently. i had to pull over to the side of the road and stop to get it to stop shaking. this has happened a few times in the past but the shaking has not been as violent and has stopped when letting off the throttle (not this time). this seems to be getting worse. my truck has 11,450 miles.

Truck just turned 25k miles this week. i experienced the "death wobble" twice today for the first time. the first time i crossed an expansion joint that was not perpendicular with the road at about 70 mph. steering wheel went back & forth maybe seven times moving 3" or so very quickly, definitely got my full attention! second one about an hour later going over another expansion joint which was perpendicular to the road, same occurrence but much milder.

Hauling horse trailer with 4 horses, hit a bump in road and vehicle began shaking and almost lost control on a 5 lane highway thru slc ut. also learned after the fact ford death wobble.

While traveling at approximately 65mph truck developed a high speed wobble. wife was driving at the time and was barely able to get the truck stopped without losing control. the truck that has 26000 miles on it had no payload shook so hard that my wife was unable to hold on to the steering wheel and had to apply the brakes to get it stopped while trying to stay in her lane and on the road.

While towing a 28" fifth wheel trailer i encounter severe, and i mean severe front end wobble which almost caused loss of control on 3 separate occasions (death wobble). it occurred when hitting expansion joints at bridge crossings and when going over moderate road bumps. speeds varied from 65mph to about 55mph.truck is relatively new with only 15k miles on it.

While driving at normal highway speeds (65) an 'extreme' wobble developed in front steering and suspension. steering wheel deflection was around 30 degrees side to side from top center. a fifth wheel travel trailer was being towed and the wobble resulted in departure from travel lane; however, no accident occurred. speed was reduced to 20 mph before wobble ceased and trailer brakes we the only effective thing to straighten truck. application of truck brakes seemed to worsen the wobble. volumes of information exist on this issue labeled as 'death wobble.' https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4jv7l8bbo1q https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8euq6f8rgt4 vehicle is at purchasing dealer for repair. i am happy to speak with nhtsa if deemed appropriate.

At 60mph on the highway, after hitting a minor bump in the road, the truck shook and vibrated violently and the steering wheel was very difficult to hold onto to. the shaking stopped around 25mph as i was pulling on to the shoulder. the truck has 21,000 miles on it and all tires, wheels, parts, suspension do not appear damaged. research into the issue revealed what is being called, "death wobble." those descriptions fit my experience perfectly. there seems to be no clear solution.

Death wobble! my truck has 31k. while on the expressway doing 50+ mph if i hit and bump or take a turn fast, the entire front end shakes violently. extremely scaring and dangerous, caused me to stop in the middle of the expressway before it went back to driving normal.

I experienced "death wobble" while driving approximately 65 mph on interstate 35 in northern il on 3-9-19. this started after i ran over a minor road bump. the steering wheel began to shake violently. i almost lost control but was able to reduce speed which stopped the vibration and pull over to the side of the road. this did happen again on 3-10-19 while driving approximately 45 mph. i have an appointment with my ford's service department on 3-13-19.
