Vehicle in motion when all of a sudden would slow down to a crawl and lose ability to accelerate. yellow wrench warning light would then light up. happened twice and almost had serious accident. also would experience burning smell when accelerating up a hill. previously reported to dealer but they would not believe.
The air conditioner stopped sending out cool air after a long drive back in february 2018 it then started smelling like exhaust in the vehicle for several days later until it was confirmed with my husband who also smelled it, i took it in to the dealer, they had already performed the recall inspection and this time did an additional step in patching. currently the car ventilation when ac or heater is turned off when driving blows out warm air and there is still a light smell of exhaust in the vehicle that was recently noticed after a month after the additional patching. we now realize back in july 2017 we also took the car in for the same reason the air conditioner stopped working after a long drive out of the city, we do not remember there being a smell of exhaust then like there is now.
Shift to park warning aoften comes on-car is on park!

My wife and i took a trip for a baby shower, it was about a 2.5 hr drive. on the way there, the check engine light turned on. there were no other warnings or indications of an issue. we made it fine to our destination, drove around town a little bit, and stayed the night. the next day we headed home (another 2.5 hr trip). the check engine light was on the entire time, but there were no abnormal noises or odors, or any other indication that there was an issue. when we got home, we parked the car, turned it off, unloaded, then turned it on to back it into the garage and turn it off again. after sitting in the garage for 10 -15 minutes, the car exploded, shaking the house and catching the engine bay on fire. the engine bay was engulfed in flames, causing fire/smoke damage to our garage and everything in it. an independent investigator stated that the cooling fan had failed, which caused the check engine light, however that seems like not a sufficient reason to why the engine exploded. we are unsure what the root cause was, but something had to have gone very wrong for the car to explode in the garage, ignition off, and stationary and the only indication being a check engine light even if the cooling fan did fail. this all happened just over a week after an oil change at a ford dealership. this could have been a very dangerous situation that could have very likely ended up in injury or death.
Distinct smell of exhaust leaking in the cab space when the vehicle is in operation.
As i was driving my car, out of nowhere, my dash started flashing these errors/issues/warnings. the car to seem to be driving normal, so i think. all of a sudden the terrain management system fault light appears, dial no longer works to get 4 wheel drive or traction control system to work, abs light on! researching and seeing a lot of same issues but after dealer looking at the diagnostics nothing truly wrong? this seems to be happening to a lot of these models.
Recently while driving my vehicle, i have begun noticing a rotten egg/sulfuric smell. this has been occurring for approximately the past 6 months. the issue will happen while i am driving, and also if i am sitting at idle for an extended time (at a red light or in traffic). i have noticed feeling fatigue while driving as well, and there are times where the smell makes me nauseous or gives me a headache. i work in emergency services, and i am extremely concerned with the smell that is entering my vehicle.
One car accident hit guard rail then ran in the neutral ground all four tires blowout. blurred vision could not find the interstate. gulose level 34 not a diabetic. need to investigate suv totaled. on highway, in motion
Cabin has a very very strong smell of natural gas. it is very concerning. it is toxic to breathe and dangerous! my vehicle seems unsafe to drive!
As i was driving down the road, my left windshield cladding flew off of my 2013 ford explorer without warning or accident. the car behind me almost was in an accident swerving to avoid it. this is evidently a common problem as there are multiple cases of this happening on the explorer from what i've seen on multiple forums. i went to my local ford dealership to discuss with them and they basically told me tough luck and they couldn't repair it. what? really? i evidently have to go to a glass shop, buy the pieces from ford at a cost of $400, yes that is $400. they couldn't even point me in the direction of a glass shop but were happy to take my money for something that costs a total of $90 online as they told me 'don't trust parts ordered online' but oddly enough i should trust parts manufactured by ford when they created the original piece and bracket that holds it(which i also have to replace as it broke as well) that flew off at 60 mph.
Carbon monoxide smell on the inside of my explorer made my wife and her friend light headed and started getting headaches and we stop using our explore for our safety and it's know just parked in my garage.and haven't use it anymore.
On nov 5th, a sulfuric odor was detected in the cabin of the vehicle for a brief period. on nov 6th, the same odor was detected in and around the vehicle with much more strength than the previous day. on nov 13th, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and repair. the vehicle was returned on the 13th stating a known tsb has been implemented (the tsb number was not disclosed). upon driving the vehicle home (approx 25 miles), the sulfuric odor was still present. driver experienced dizziness near the end of the commute home. on nov 15th, driver's spouse was driving the vehicle and reported the same sulfuric odor and experienced a headache after approximately 25 minutes of being in the vehicle. both drivers experienced the odor while stationary as well as in motion. both drivers were driving in a mix of city and highway driving.
Co2 entering the cabin. already took it to a ford dealer they lied to me and never fixed the car. now they want me to pay in order for them to check it. you can smell the smoke getting into the car.
The electronic screen that controls radio, environmental systems, navigation, shuts down frequently while the vehicle is in motion, or motor is running.
When the engine is "gunned" or when the rpms are high (when speeding up quickly), an exhaust smell is noticed in the cabin. we have a preemie infant and a 3 year old, and are very worried about the effects this may have on them. this has happened several times. most recent incident was 10/21/17
Vehicle fills will strong smell of exhaust usually when entering freeway or 3/4 to wot situations(passing etc.) at other times vehicle seems to build smell of exhaust idling. i have taken the vehicle after first purchased to ford and they say there is nothing wrong. having seen current reports of similar concerns with police and consumer vehicles i wanted to report and confirm the same issue in a non police explorer. this has been constantly happening for years.
Fuel exhaust fumes in the cabin. starting to get stronger
Today, i was driving down the highway with my ac on and began to smell a strong odor of fuel. as i drove the smell got stronger. i finally got to my destination 10 minutes later and felt sick and had a headache.
Both of my remote controls are not working at all and have to be putting the control in the little box to get my vehicle started and carbon monoxide fumes are present so i stop driving my vehicle for safety precautions of the smell.
The smell of exhaust fumes are present inside the vehicle cabin during trips. this is causing headaches and nauseous feelings after being in the vehicle for extended trips longer than half an hour.
After driving in my explorer, when i get out, i get dizzy and naseous. my husband has the same thing happen to him while driving with me
This vehicle has the exhaust fume issue where the cabin fills with exhaust fumes and is difficult to drive due to the smell. you have to drive with the windows down in order to tolerate driving. the recent recall was done - vehicle taken to dealer to have the ac reprogramed and tailgate seals inspected. this did not work. we will be trading the vehicle in and purchasing another vehicle soon. this issue needs to be addressed. ford has had too many safety and quality issues that go ignored by the manufacturer. this vehicle also has the peeling paint issue that ford refused to address as well. poor quality - unacceptable.
Carbon monoxide / exhaust enter into the cabin during daily driving. confirmed with gas detector
Driver door ajar sensor remains on even though door is securely closed, even on repeat attempts to close the door. this causes the doors not to lock and allows doors to be opened even when car is in motion.
Engine exhaust enters vehicle interior when rpms go over 3,000 and continues to come into the cabin throughout most trips. it disapates a bit when the air vents are shut and all air (heating/ac) is turned off completely. the overwhelming smell has created a dangerous driving environment in the vehicle which can only be driven with the windows open.
Toxic exhaust fumes enter the vehicle upon accelerating , fumes cause can be smelled by everyone in the cabin. fumes smell is very heavy and wont go away unless windows are all open and we stop accelerating. has been affecting the vehicle for several years. ford motor company or dealership will not help . i contacted ford motor co this morning and they advised that i was out of warranty and there is nothing that can be done.
Like many others, i have the exhaust smell in the cabin. the vehicle has had the technical service bulletin fix from ford.
When accelerating quickly (i.e. to pass someone) within a few seconds the cabin fills with a sulfur/rotten egg smell that lingers for about a minute. the smell is so noticeable and pungent that my small children complain of the smell. this has been going on since i purchased the car, but have recently become worried when i saw reports of carbon monoxide poisoning and complaints of the same thing i am experiencing.
I am experiencing the driver "door ajar" issue with my 2013 ford explorer. the vehicle has 36k miles. i was told that the door latch assembly is bad. when the door is closed the vehicle's computer thinks it's open and keeps sending alarms from the panel. i have been researching this issue and it seems that many ford products are experiencing this issue. i am complaining because i think ford needs to recall and correct the faulty door latch. this problem is also a safety issue for me. i have grandchildren that often ride with me. because the vehicle thinks the door is open, i can not activate the locks. so while the car is in motion, it's unlocked. i can not drive my grandchildren in this vehicle for fear that one will open the door while the car is in motion. very unsafe. i have to come out of pocket to fix this issue. ford should be ashamed of themselves. they know about this issue with some of their 2011 - 2014 explores, escapes and etc. they don't give a hoot.
The vehicle was tested and found to have 10 ppm of co in the interior.
Carbon monoxide poising. my ford explorer has been fixed 3 times and the problem still exists. recently this week it has begun to get worse accelerating less than 40 miles per hour. when i reverse out of my garage or when i am at a light i can still smell the strong odor. i have to drive with windows down all the time now. i have contacted the local ford dealer who basically told me they can not do anything further and to contact ford. ford has been of no help. i am concerned that my family and i have been exposed to this carbon monoxide poisoning for almost 4 years. i am upset that ford will not take responsibility for a flaw in their design and are putting so many owners and their families at risk.
I believe that carbon minoxide has been leaking into the cabin of my 2013 explorer limited. i often notice that after driving my vehicle i will feel very lethargic, sleepy, nauseous, or have a bad headache. sometimes i can even taste gasoline in my mouth. it causes a slight burning sensation in my throat. i've had this vehicle since august 2015. i have noticed that i've felt sick with the symptoms mentioned above more often than not since i started driving this vehicle. ford motor company has acknowledged this issue with the explorers to a certain extent. however, it seems as though nothing has officially been done to fix the issue to protect consumers. i am extremely disappointed that ford motor company hasn't issued a formal recall for these vehicles. i don't feel safe!!!
Takata recall toxic odor coming from air compressor through air vent on passenger side front seat while in motion
Engine strains when ac is on and vehicle has stopped. ac stops working when outside temperature greater than 90 degrees fahrenheit. both fans will start blowing loudly when driving vehicle and stopped.
When driving my ford explorer to get on the highway, i started speeding up and the rpm's went higher than 3.5 for just a little time frame, but then this awful smell (smells like burnt hair) started coming in through the vents. i believe the smell is coming from the exhaust system.
Randomly honks with and with fob in or near car and without the car running. check engine light comes on after getting fuel, and sometimes it does not stop the gas when pumping.... send a code for sensor in fuel compartment.... door panels crack
Two things: the window outer pillar mount randomly flies off of the vehicle. my glass guy has even traded out the whole part and again it has flown off. this glass guy is the one who does glass for the ford dealer here. 2 - the exhaust that comes through the rear air vent not only smells bad but makes me and my kids very ill.
Periodically when driving and or stopped or slowing down at an intersection i smell gas or fumes or what may be carbon monoxide. i notice it the most when driving for a longer distance, like more than 30 mins. this has happened multiple times over the last 2 years the date listed below was just the last time i noticed it. it makes me and family sick to our stomach and instantly have headaches. i have taken the car in twice to where i purchased it and they cant seem to find anything wrong. purchased car from carmax on 1/17/15.
Exhaust entering cabin during acceleration.
Since my purchase of my 2013 in december of 2016, i've always noticed a strange odor inside the vehicle. i first thought this was normal and now after my mom called me about the issues with the ford explorers, i've really been paying more attention to the smell. sometimes i just let my windows down some while driving. and with the growing concern about the police officers vehicles what about us civilians? my grandkids and myself and kids ride in my ford explorer daily. are we not worth protecting by ford issuing a recall to ensure all vehicle owners and their families are safe? i will be getting my vehicle checked as well as my family to make sure we are safe not just police officers. i have noticed this odor when my explorer has been idling with the air conditioning on and when the vehicle is in motion. also i've been having headaches but not sure if the odor is the cause. the below date is just one time. not sure of other exact dates due to thinking the smell was a normal smell
Carbon monoxide poisining!! (exhaust leak) on 6/1/2017, i noticed an hazardous odor in vehicle while driving. the local news have reported the serious health risks of the ford explorer giving off this foul smell. some police departments have pulled the vehicles and are not using them anymore because it is dangerous. ford said they will repair the issue at no cost. i want ford to repair my vehicle too because this is very unsafe for myself and family. my vehicle is unsafe to drive!!
2013 ford explorer xlt drivers side arm rest splitting between seams. splitting is expanding on drivers door side. checked online and many others have the same concern with this model year 2013
Front moulding around windshield on both sides came flying off the car on the highway. very dangerous potential road hazard to all drivers on the road. there are dozens of documented cases of this happening. see link below. ford sent me to you as they said they will not do anything. http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/explorer/2013/windows_windshield/windshield_trim_flies_off.shtml
Exhaust fumes in cabin.
My 2013 ford explorer sport has an awful, rotten egg smell inside the cabin, every time i press on the gas for quick acceleration. it happens every single time on quick acceleration. smells gaseous. i'm afraid that carbon monoxide or other gases are leaked into the cabin somehow, when i press on the gas pedal. i'm afraid that even when i'm not doing a quick acceleration, gases are still leaking in, yet harder to detect. many times i have gotten terrible headaches during long distances of driving. i have gotten nausea feeling as well as light headedness multiple times as well. i'm very worried. the most scary thing is that i have a 4 year old, and a pregnant girlfriend with a due date in december 2017. i will be devastated if anything happens to them. ford in tallahassee, florida has told me that there is no recall on anything like i am describing, and that i would be charged to have it looked at. and then another charge for parts/labor. i don't have the funds to pay them an outrageous fee to try and diagnose the problem. when you buy a newer car, you shouldn't have to worry about breathing in toxic gases inside the cabin, that could kill you or someone you love. i don't know what to do. please help me.
A certified ford service department diagnosed our vehicle for exhaust fumes entering the cabinet through unsealed seams in the rear of the car. we took the explorer in for a diagnoses after smelling what appeared to be exhaust fumes inside the car. at the time, we have no idea what was causing the fumes smell, so my husband drove the car in an attempt to rule out a few issues. not even 20 minutes into driving, he felt nauseous and dizzy. he immediately pulled over and refused to continue driving the vehicle. afterward, we took it to a ford dealership, where the service department provided the aforementioned diagnosis.
Cabin fills up with exhaust fumes after speeding up
We have had continuous problems with carbon monoxide entering the passenger cabin of the vehicle. this vehicle is a marked police department patrol vehicle, a 2013 ford police interceptor utility suv (explorer). we have taken the vehicle back to the dealership 5 times for this problem, and it still has not been repaired. the vehicle has been equipped with an after-market carbon monoxide detector. when the driver quickly accelerates while the hvac system is in "recirculate" mode, the driver can smell exhaust fumes. the co detector also gives an alarm. we have taken the vehicle to a local fire station, where they used an industrial gas detector, and they have detected up to 35 ppm of co in the front seat area. (the firefighters told us they are required to wear a respirator at 35 ppm.) the driver's blood level of carbon monoxide also has been tested, and 5 ppm of co was found in his blood immediately after driving the vehicle (he is not a smoker). two primary repairs attempts have been performed. the first was to repair a "pinhole" leak in a gasket on the catalytic converter. the second was a technical service bulletin, where the rear bumper was removed and sealant was applied around some vents. neither repair was successful. we are preparing to return the vehicle to the dealer for the 6th time. we have had to pay out-of-pocket for all repair attempts so far. right now, the vehicle has been parked and we cannot drive it because it is too dangerous.
There is a consistent smell of sulfur or gas coming into the car through the vents. i was light headed and dizzy while driving. stopped and roll the windows down. this was not just once but ford is doing nothing about the problem. i searched for recalls and they said there is no recall on my ford explorer for this issues. please advise as to what i am to do?
