Problems with 2013 Ford Explorer UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2013 Ford Explorer starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 58 317 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2013 Ford Explorer

We bought the vehicle used and with 48 hours noticed an exhaust smell inside cabin when sitting at a traffic light or stop sign.

The sulfur/sitting egg smell from the exhaust system has become so strong that its was giving me head aches and making me feel sick that i had to trade the vehicle in and take a very big loss on it.

Smells like exhaust fumes inside car while driving or idling sitting still. on two occasions i had to stop and get out of the car because i felt tired and sleepy. most of the time i can't smell anything but my eyes burn and i feel dizzy and lightheaded when i get out of the car after driving. i had someone check the exhaust muffler etc. did not finds anything. i called a ford dealership explained the problem they did admit they had heard of the problem. i am taking it in next week to check it out.

2013 ford explorer xlt, factory seams not sealed under power lift gate in rear caused water leaking into third row seat from seatbelt, carpet had mildew and mseatbelt was drenched, took to ford dealership three times without resolve and had to self pay because extended warranty did not cover water leaks. would never have noticed this first occurrence if i had not purchased custom weather tech floor mats throughout vehicle which allowed me to see the pooling of water. had to tell the ford dealership what to fix after online research and multiple forums with same complaint. now has several inches of water leaking from right drivers side into floorboard, belt squeals when accelerating in rain causing lights to dim and vehicle to slow down. obvious manufacturer defect. mildew smell very strong coming from air vents causing headaches when driving vehicle. this leak occurs after after every rainstorm while vehicle is stationary and will leak into cabin onto leg while driving in the rain, leakage entrance point unknown, but exits into vehicle under steering wheel. ford corporate continues to blow me off and wants me to pay for a diagnosis which i have already done. there needs to be a recall which fixes all leak points with proper seam sealant and all carpets and air system in vehicle being replaced as mold causes respiratory health issues.

I smelled sulfur the day i bought this vehicle. i am 37 weeks pregnant, and have a two-year-old. i felt dizzy upon driving this vehicle. this is unacceptable. there is no return policy for our vehicle, despite the fact that i bought

On acceleration the inside of the cabin has an exhaust smell. this only happens when accelerating, usually medium to hard, and then stops. the exhaust fumes alway occur during this type of acceleration.

I have noticed a distinct exhaust smell within the cabin of my 2013 ford explorer while driving. it has gotten increasingly worse over the past few months. at first, i though it was coming from vehicles in front of me, therefore i changed the heating or a/c to circulation mode but the smell did not go away. i noticed it happening even when i was the only one on the road with no vehicles near me. my 10 year old son and i have both been experiencing nausea and headaches when riding in the vehicle for more than a few minutes and i feel that i have finally narrowed it down to the exhaust fumes inside the car. my son complains of feeling sick almost every time we drive any distance in the car. i assumed it was car sickness but i too am experiencing the same problems along with headaches and dizziness. i have had to consistently roll down the windows in the dead of winter just to try to get rid of the exhaust smell in the car. i feel that this is definitely a safety concern and i no longer feel safe for myself or any of my passengers to travel more than a few miles. this happens when the car is in motion, stationary or idling and with and without the heat and a/c in use. the dealer can find no holes or damage to my exhaust system. there are currently no recalls on this problem but while searching for similar complaints for this problem online, i am overwhelmed with the amount of information from other explorer owners experiencing the same problem. this is dangerous and needs to be resolved before someone loses their life or they or their children are hospitalized from carbon monoxide poisoning from the poisonous cabin air.

Car has sulfur smell when using air conditioning. i have had my car for 2 years and have complained about problem and apparently i am not the only one.

When under heavy acceleration which is rare or when climbing any incline which is quite often where i live, the car has a horrible smell inside. its worse when you have the heat on it seems. i have replaced the cabin air filter but it nearly seams worse now.

There is a strong exhaust odor that in my car. i am unable to use the ac and heat because of the side effects i get. (massive headaches, blurred vision, nausea). i just bought my car in december 2016 and i contacted the ford company i bought my car from and they are unaware of this defect. i am scared to put my 7 month old in my car and will not put her life in danger because of this issue.

When my car is in park and running, it fills with exhaust fumes

My husband and i own a 2013 explorer. several weeks ago when my husband was backing out of the garage and driveway, the vehicle slid into our stone wall and cost us $250 and the insurance company $1955,21. that was when we discovered the 4 wheel drive was not working on the explorer. we took it to montrose motors in montrose, pa and were told that the vehicle did not receive a computer update. supposedly without that update the 4 wheel drive was disengaged. for the computer to be updated. for the computer to be updated it cost us $37.10. we were never notified by ford that this would happen to our vehicle. this accident may now make us lose our accident free discount and increase our premiums also, imagine if we were driving on the road in a snow storm and thought we had 4 wheel drive. we could have had an accident and hurt or killed someone or ourselves. i really think ford was irresponsible for this issue if explorer's have this problem. we were gm buyers and switched to ford, but i have to say i am now disappointed.

I purchased my used 2013 ford explorer from ken garff ford in st. george utah in february 2017. at first i noticed a smell, similar to a propane smell, coming from the heating system. then i noticed it was really bad when the car was idling. then it got worse when the weather warmed up and i used the air conditioning. we had to roll the windows down to air it out. it was making me sick. it seems to be the worse when it is accelerating and when it is idling. i took it to ken garff ford in st. george utah and they replaced some of the exhaust system. they said they replaced the same parts that they had replaced for the entire law enforcement explorers in our county (washington county, ut) it cost me over 500 dollars. it did not fix it. it seemed to be worse.they have now ordered more parts and said it will cost me over 500 dollars again. that's over $1,000 so far. and over the last six month i have had headaches almost every day. i am known to have migraines but this is now extreme. my doctor cannot understand why i was now having so many headaches and many more migraines. now that i know the explorer has fume issues i believe it is the fumes from the car that are causing the headaches and make me feel sick so often. i finally researched online if the repairs are working and it seems that fixing it the way ford has told the dealers to fix it that the response is that it does not solve the problem. i agree having put money into it already and it actually seems worse. i do not want to sink more money into it and i feel that i should not have to pay for the repairs if the repairs do work. also my job requires that i travel a lot and i usually put over 20,000 a year on my vehicles. i can not continue to drive the car and to feel so sick when i do. please advice. thank you,

Climate control system. there is a pungent odor coming from the system at various times, usually when the air conditioner is operating. this has been an ongoing issue and the source has not been identified. the engine will begin running rough at idle, both in drive and park, as though it were going to stall. the problem was checked and compared to another new vehicle, which had not been purchased, and identified as being "normal". most recently both catalytic converters failed. they were replaced and it does not appear to have corrected any other issue.

My 2013 ford explorer was in park got out of vehicle to unload my mobility scooter, while i was at back of vehicle, the vehicle started rolling away from me , wife yelled at me the vehicle was rolling away, i jumped back into vehicle and put my foot on brake , started vehicle and backed it up a few feet from where i originally parked it , note vehicle was on a slight incline from garage door. the vehicle shift lever was in park at time vehicle was moving. note every now and then the park message about not being in park comes on when vehicle park shift lever is in park. at the time of this incident no message was displayed on instrument panel this event happen on 01-08-2017 at around 9:15 pm at are apartment in tulsa oklahoma. *tr

Strong smell of gas coming out of the air vents, happens all the time driving at any speed,or parked suv has only 40000 miles.

My blutooth pairing with iphone was compromised by someone other then me. it wouldnt let me listen to blu tooth on my phone. when it did let me listen the music that once sounded good now no matter what i did it sounded horrible. another thing i noticed was the performance seemed to be greatly increased with poor mpg and then after awhile and still is this way there is a lack of performance and the motor has a completely weird sound since this started happening. i forgot to mention i had previosly had my phone connected thru the sync app and it had some nice features i was using until all this unexplainable things started happening. once i noticed the volume on the radio was all the way up the next time i had entered my vehicle. and it seemed like in 2017 it would only happen when i was not far from my house and as time went on it seemed like they could change settings no matter where i was. i would program sync settings and before you know it sync is doing excatly what i had turned off. there was a couple other things i wrote down back when they happened that i need to find and then i can report back.

Fumes accumulate in the cabin of the truck while operating causing lightheadedness and headaches since we purchased the vehicle

For the past several months, i have been getting a foul order emanating from my vehicle. i smell it inside the cabin as well as the exterior of the vehicle after stopping. the odor becomes stronger with longer engine run times or harsher driving conditions. the odor does not smell like oil or gas. i can best describe it as acidic or chemical. i have taken it in to my local ford dealership for resolution. the service advisor acknowledged that he can smell the odor as well. unfortunately, they could find no specific cause for the issue. the action they took was to power wash the engine compartment under the belief that it may have been a dead animal. unfortunately, the smell has not disappeared after that dealership action. i am obviously concerned that it is posing a safety risk.

Exhaust/gas smell in cabin. when car is turned on and running.

The car has rotten egg bad/smell inside the car since the early of the car ownership. we brought to car to the dealer 2 years ago trying to figure it out the source of the smell, but was told it was due to the mildew. currently, the car still have rotten egg smell coming from the air outlet. the smell is strong when it is idling. i am worry about the safety of my family.

Fuel odor when starting the vehicle and exhaust smells while driving

I purchased my vehicle as a used car coming off of a lease at a certified ford dealership. the vehicle now has 31000 miles. the factory warranty ended 10/2016. i first noticed this problem late 12/2016. the vehicle exhibits a strong exhaust odor in the passenger cabin during all times of operation. the odor is much stronger when the vehicle is stationary (i.e., idling at a traffic light) and is very strong during and immediately after hard acceleration. it seems as though the exhaust odor is actually coming through the vehicles ventilation system. the exhaust odor often leaves me feeling sick if i do not crack open the windows for fresh air. i have called my dealership (miller ford, mount holly, nj) and explained the problem. the dealership acknowledged having previous similar complaints and stated that there was a service bulletin designed to address the issue. however, since my vehicle is no longer under warranty, the cost of the repair would not be covered. i now have been driving the vehicle for approximately 3 months, enduring these exhaust fumes. i feel that this is a serious safety issue that could adversely affect my health and the safety of others if i were to become overwhelmed by the exhaust's co. i cannot afford to just stop operating this vehicle and buy another.

We experience noxious fumes in the cabin when either the heater or air conditioner are on. it smells like exhaust or industrial chemicals or rotten eggs (hard to describe). our local ford dealership claimed it came from a leaking water pump (which they replaced under warranty) that saturated the under engine cover due to a leaking water pump. driving in the winter actually requires we crack several windows and sometimes only use the butt warmers as it's too toxic smelling. the local dealership even acknowledged the smell, but again attributed to the leaking coolant. it's particularly worse when the system is in the recirculating mode. sitting idle at a light or waiting for someone with the system on is probably the worst, particularly when in recirculating mode.

Exhaust smell in the interior of the vehicle when driving. get random head aches feel sick to my stomach sometimes.

Ford exhaust i am getting a strong rotten egg smell and a burning smell everytime i drive my car which is a 2013 ford explorer limited 4wd it has been getting progressively worse. this happens when i am on the highway and when i am just driving down the street. i am not sure if it gets progressively worse when the car is going faster because it smells all the time. i just had the car toed to dealership because it will not start. in addition i noticed that i have been suffering from headaches, dizzinessand and fatigue while driving which has never happened to me before. finally i noticed that when there is no power in the car there is no way to open the back tailgate to let people out when you are sitting in the third row of the car so you are trapped back there with the smell.

I am experiencing the same issue detailed in a current open investigation pe16008. exhaust smell in cabin when climate control system is on. it seems to be worse at when you stop after driving at high power setting. like stopping after exiting the freeway. once you begin driving again the odor is reduced but still present. on trips that require more stop and go driving i have been experiencing headaches and a sickness to my stomach. which i believe is related to the odor. the issue has been on going.

I have 2013 explorer sport.. i have exhaust fumes entering the cabin through the vents(hvac). well know issues that seems to have no resolve according to ford. although they did issue a service bulletin back in 2014 . from what i have read it doesn't seem to solve the problem. many people still have fumes after the "fix".@$700-$850 . warranty does not cover the cost. a classs action law suit has been filed and awaiting for settlement decisions. carbon monoxide is not something i want to expose my family to on a daily basis . ford needs to find a fix or a recall need to happen . my dealer is cooperating and will be assessing the issue . but from what i read only one person has had a positive outcome from ford. i hope this complaint will help push ford to make a better effort to resolve this major issue.

Blinker design is flawed. when pressed lightly, the blinker "blinks" 3 times and turns off. this is ok, but when you want to actually turn your blinker on, you have to apply much more pressure than usual. as a result, i often flash the high beam lights. this has happened on multiple occasions and has made motorists angry with me when, unfortunately this was unintentional. it makes me look like an aggressive driver and all i am trying to do is turn my blinker on. since i know this is an issue, i am purposely careful and this still occurs way too often. i now consider not using my blinker or just using the one with 3 blinks (which is not sufficient) to avoid accidentally flashing my high beams at the car ahead of me. this should be repaired, as it is not functional and unsafe.

Experiencing strong sulphur smell inside vehicle. (during acceleration and when rear air is on). drove vehicle all summer with my children riding along and i thought my 8 year old was experiencing car sickness. we would have to pull over because he would get sick to the point of throwing up many times. i just figured it was car sickness because i didn't smell any fumes (it all makes sense now, carbon monooxide is odorless). when riding in our other vehicles, it never happened. he rode 5 hours to the beach and 5 hours home in my husbands 2013 gmc 2500 and didn't get sick once. i took my car to the dealership to have the wheel bearing replaced today (10/11/16). i told them to check the catalytic converters to make sure they weren't plugged because of the odor (the strong odor started yesterday). they call me and tell me there is a tsb *service bulletin" and certain 2011-2015 explorer have exhaust fumes leaking into the vehicle. it all started to come together. i called ford and because my 36/36,000 warrenty ended (i have 45,672 miles on it now), there is no coverage. i even purchased the extended ford plan and they said it won't cover it either. i have to pay them $480 to try to fix it. i've read peoples experiences and their solution to fix it hasn't worked for anyone. i bought a carbon monoxide detector today and when i pick it up tomorrow, i am going to place it in the car where my 8 year old sits and turn the air on. i will also record the results on the detector to see what happens. extremely disappointed in ford! they haven't even made anyone aware of this problem and they don't intend too! its a big secret for them because that is one of their best selling vehicles. and good luck getting it covered!

When accelerating we get a very strong sulfur smell in the cabin. most of the time it is so strong that we have to roll down the windows.

When i am driving in motion on any type of road and i accelerate i get an exhaust rotten egg smell inside my vehicle, i called the dealer about it, they acknowledged there is a tsb and problem but wouldn't fix it because my mileage is past warranty coverage. they told me it would cost me about $2,000 out of my pocket to repair. i don't have the money to repair it or buy another vehicle being on social security. ford needs to recall this vehicle and repair it, but they refuse, very sad how they can get away with this flaw at the cost of small consumers! after reading on he internet about the his, i'm sure there are thousands with this problem! the us government needs to step in and help us with this!

There is an exhaust smell (like burnt hair) inside the cabin when the car accelerates, especially a hard acceleration and often when the air conditioning is on. certified dealer cannot identify cause of issue or how it occurs.

Exhaust smell inside cabin, especially when stationary

In sept 2016 i pulled out of the dentist and blacked out. i smelled a weird smell coming from the air conditioning. ski have been sick and out of work since. i have been to many doctors and all tests come back negative. i drive the car but have to stop many times and get out because i feel lightheaded and "out of it". my sons also get nauseous and "don't feel well" in the car. my boyfriend drove it the other day and got out saying he didn't feel well and was really tired. i really believe this car has been my cause of being so sick and out of work for so long. it happens when i'' driving it...i stop and get out of the car and after a little bit i feel better.

This evening my wife ran a few errands and afterwards literally stumbled into our home because of how dizzy she was. i asked her what was wrong and she said she accelerated quickly to get on a busy city street near our house coming home and she subsequently inhaled an "exhaust/burnt hair" smell from inside the car. she could barely even stand straight. we have 2 small children and the exhaust/gas smell has progressively gotten more and more noticeable when accelerating quickly. we've now had the vehicle 2.5 years approximately. every time we fill the vehicle up with gas, the fumes linger inside the car for over 24 hours. i'm seriously worried about my family's safety at this point and we're wondering what action to take next since we don't want to continue driving a potentially hazardous vehicle. unfortunately, we live in a warm state and have to utilize the ac with the windows up almost exclusively.

The door sensor indicates the door is open when in reality it is closed. this causes a warning bell that does not cease and keeps the dome light illuminated. this condition also causes the alarm system to go off resulting at times in a police response. in order to alleviate the problem you must shut the door repeatedly, sometimes a dozen times or more. this also has run the battery down due to the dome lights and accessories staying on. apart fromt he obvious frustration this problem is potentially dangerous. this is not a one time thing but a chronic and repeated problem that has no real resolution. i see other ford users are experiencing similar problems with their ford explorers.

The door ajar light stays on. the door sensor does not work. the interior lights remain illuminated draining the battery. the problem has been ongoing for the past three months. the recall list for ford on this issue keeps expanding - this week to include ford edge. obvious problem with ford need a recall as dealer will not cover.

There is carbon monoxide in the cabin while stationary and in motion.

When the air conditioner is set to fresh air and not recirculate, exhaust fumes enter the passenger cabin under hard acceleration. this can be reproduced every time by a slow speed of 5 miles and then hard acceleration until speed limit. this then leaves the cabin full of strong exhaust fumes. on long road trips we often have headaches that we believe is caused by this even without hard acceleration.

It will down shift and take off faster by it self . and 2 no is the exhaust fumes that come back inside the car . we have had many friends ride with us and family members and they get sick in our vehicle also

On 7/29/16 as i was driving home (less than a ten miles) after washing my vehicle a warning light with a wrench came on and i loss acceleration vehicle went from 50 mph to 5 mph unsure due speedometer becoming inoperative i pulled over into a shopping center stopped engine and restarted it again i then put the vehicle in drive at which time i had acceleration again at which time i continued home arrived and parked the vehicle.

For 2 years now i have been smelling fumes in my car, but unable to pin point the smell. after taking to the dealership they said i'm smelling exhaust fumes. this is not covered under warranty or even extended warranty purchased, even though our safety is at risk inhaling carbon monoxide. my 5 children are constantly complaining of headaches, as i have had. i wasn't ever able to determine the cause, but am coming to the conclusion that this is the cause. ford is under investigation, and needs to make this right with the consumers.

Strong sulfur smell in cabin of vehicle after moderate to heavy acceleration. ex: accelerating to merge with traffic on a freeway on ramp. the smell generally comes through after sustained acceleration with engine rpm over 4000 and seems to be originating from the rear of the vehicle.

I had my three grandchildren for the day and we decided to go to a hands-on museum. my grandson had never been car sick and has not been since that day. he was riding in the third row seat when he became very sick. we pulled the car over and he threw up. after a few minutes of fresh air, he was fine. numerous times, my husband has asked me what the rotten smell was coming from in my car. once the media reported the carbon monoxide problem with ford explorers, i realized this was the same odor we had smelled so many times and the reason my grandson became so sick while riding in the third row seat. i called the ford dealership where i purchased the car and they said their phone had been ringing off the hook because the media had blown everything out of proportion. they indicated that they were unaware of the problem and nothing was currently being done to fix it. i'm not willing to sacrifice my grandchildren, so i traded cars and lost lots of money in the process. i had to finance another car for 75 months in order to protect my family. i think ford should compensate customers for their loss. i hope something is done about this before someone has to lose their child or their own life to carbon monoxide poisoning.

On july 5, 2016 i fell asleep while driving my explorer in i-495 south of boston at about 1:00 p.m. i read an article about exhaust fumes in the cabin of this model. wareham ford said that my car had this problem and referred me to tsb 14-0130 showing that ford knows of this problem. i was charged $700.72 to correct this dangerous problem. i think ford should recall these vehicles and pay to fix them. fortunately, there were no injuries or property damage in my case but that might not be so for the next person.

Bought a used ford explore xlt with 32k miles. as i have been driving the suv i am noticing that whenever i fully press down on the gas peddle to increase my acceleration whether i am merging onto the freeway, changing lanes or scaling a hill, the cabin is filled with a strong emissions odor. which worries me because i normally have children in the vehicle. as i let up on the gas peddle the odor dissipates. i have noticed this odor when i have my max a/c function on which is using recirculated air.

When accelerating from less than ~35 mph to higher than ~55 mph the cabin fills with exhaust smell.

Exhaust smell entering vehicle when accelerating. original tsb performed but was ineffective

Strong odor of fumes when accelerating, passing.
