Started noticing smell of rotten eggs this past summer while driving, dealership said it was probably just sealant used around windshield getting overheated. always had headaches after driving even for 15 minutes at a time. smell went away this winter but headaches and funny feeling after driving have still been a concern. now am learning it has something to do with exhaust leaking into rear of vehicle.
My 2013 ford explorer xlt 3.5l transmission started leaking fluid before 27,058 miles on june 14,2016 and as of today march 3,2018 at 44,678 miles the transmission is still leaking. the problem was brought to my dealership's attention during a repair of blistering paint on the hood. dealer stated they fixed leaking oil pan rather than leaking transmission. as of today vehicle has 44,678 miles and transmission has shown several problems when in operation: gears take too long to transfer power from 2nd to 3rd, 4th to 5th, severe over revving of engine, jerking feeling coming from transmission while transitioning through those gears, abnormal loud sounds emitting from transmission during these gear changes, leaking and dripping of transmission fluid onto hot transmission case, burning of transmission fluid and vapors entering vehicle cabin, and passengers complaining of noxious oil smell within the cabin.
Windshield molding on driver side suddenly detached and went flying off on the highway. plastic molding is attached and glued. plastic and glue appeared to break / melt unable to hold the molding in place. it is a critical hazard as the flying molding can hit a vehicle / person causing a serious accident or harm. last year, the molding on the passenger side was replaced by the dealership as it was loose. dealer noted that 1) the molding on the explorer was a bad, plastic made part, that been replaced on other explorers as the molding went flying off on the highway, and 2) there may be water damage to the vehicle due to the missing part. flying objects on a highway are serious hazards that can cause serious accidents, event death. ford needs to recall the plastic made parts and find a way to attach a molding that do not break / melt. i am seriously concern for the safety of other and the liability risk the inherent liability to the owners of explorers if an accident or harm is caused by such defective part.
A strong exhaust odor exists in the cabin area during moderate and hard acceleration. the odor is noxious and requires the windows to be opened to vent it out.
Vehicle recently started filling with fumes, seemingly exhaust fumes, while ac unit on and vehicle moving. continued while stationary. fumes stopped coming in when ac unit turned off. fumes were sickening. driving at about 25-30 mph in town.
While driving on the highway the molding around the windshield detached, broke in half and flew off the vehicle. this is the second time this has happened to me.
When accelerating exhaust fumes enter the cabin of the vehicle. the smell is worse in the backseat of the vehicle than the front. this explains the headaches and nausea my daughter experiences on our way to childrens hospital in pittsburgh! 😡 and the front passengers headaches. my vehicle has 49,000 miles on it. i'm furious and outraged that ford doesn't care to fix this, especially with all the complaints and awareness of the problem. i will be doing a carbon monoxide test tomorrow; borrowing a tester from the fire depart.
For the last two weeks the "door ajar"light stays on after starting engine and closing door. door is properly closed but indicator on dash remains on. interior lights stay on. doors will not lock when driving. chime reminder dings, and a message to put car in park will appear in display screen. this all happens when attempting to drive. very distracting and dangerous. don't know if door will stay closed in event of accident and sitting at stop lights in certain areas with door unlocked is not safe.
Getting exhaust fumes in the cabin of vehicle at times. sometimes so bad that it makes you sick nauseous and headaches. ford refuses to fix problem under there warranty. it happens at any time slow or at highway speeds when using the ac or heater it is even worse.
Door ajar warning light will not turn off after car has been started. problem was brought to ford dealership's attention but would not cover under the 3 year warranty as we missed the cutoff by 2 months. this condition has lasted for 6 months as we continue to hope that a recall notice is issued.
I have taken my 2013 explorer into the dealer ship twice the first time i took my car in i told them their was some thing wrong with the ideal. when i'm sitting with it idaling it feels like the car wants to die. did not fix it then was still under warranty. took it back in a few months later complaining of the same thing the dealership said it was my throttle body it would cost me 450.00 to fix it. that it should of been done the first time. second complaint is that when the out side air is off and have the heater/air conditioning on having to accelerate up a hill or anything that requires to step on the gas we get a lot of fumes into the car. having to roll the down the windows to get the fumes out.
Air system, exhaust. i have been complaining to my dealership for over a year about the horrible air that is coming into my car when we use the a/c or heater. we have resorted to not using it because we can't stand the smell. i get my car serviced regularly at the ford dealership where i bought it. they state since there is no recall there is nothing they can do to fix it. it is anytime the air is turned on and specifically the air for the back passengers.
Started my engine. truck was in park and i feel this bouncing/shaking which is quite strange. have no idea what that can be and how dangerous it is while driving. another time it happened was when i came to a complete stop, still in drive and again the bouncing/ shaking feeling i experienced again. i was on a smooth city street.
Carbon monoxide smell is coming out of vents when a/c is used. it usually starts happening after the car is warmed up. the smell is so strong i often have to turn off air conditioning and roll down the windows to allow the air to be cleared out. often get headaches from this smell.
I have been complaining about the exhaust smell in the cab since i bought my 2013 xlt, in 2015. i had taken it in to hall ford in newport news ,va to be told that there is nothing wrong. i brought it in about 3 times to be told the same. the smell comes after you rev up the engine, with the air circulation button engaged. i first brought it up when my wife and i had our baby in jan of 2016. that was my main concern but to this day nothing has come of it because " there in no exhaust leaking into your cabin."
I bought car may 3013 started smelling exhaust inside the vehicle and kept asking the dealer to please check it out and asked if there were any other complaints for the same. they acted as though i was crazy never checked it out and i requested it every time took it in for oil and tire rotation. after a while when i would be in the vehicle and excelerate it would smell as though some one dumped a can of gas in the back of the car. when took in the last time dealer i bought it from told me would cost me too much to fix as it was a big job just don't use your real air conditioner. we live in florida and my grandchildren ride with me that is not an option. the fumes happened when exceleration at low and higher speeds not during same circumstances. the last time where as it had been on the open highway i was simply doing a left turn and this time the exhaust was in the front passenger seat area. this happened for the last four years i reported to ford customer service the gave me claim number have not heard back. case number is cas10895619
This is my third attempt at this. my explorer has the exhaust problem you are seeing in the news. i have tried to work with the dealership, ford directly and now one wants to acknowledged. i have been chasing this for a few years. my kids and i are getting ill and with 100 degree temp and below zero climate we have to use the air. they also have a problem with their outer window pillars where they will come lose and randomly fly off on the freeway. below is my conversation with ford directly who claim this is rare and does not cause safety risk, to see the dealership who needs to take the car apart at my expense to even try and locate the problem.
My ford explorer has a distinct odor when i accelerate. i brought it into the ford dealership, and they said there was nothing wrong. i have had a continual strong smell from the vehicle. it happens when i press the gas pedal, generally on an uphill incline.
The "door ajar" lights do not go off for the front passenger and front drivers doors. it appears the doors are shut, but the censors do not go off. because the censors do not go off, the dome light stays on making it hard to see at night and draining the battery. the doors do not lock making it a safety issue. when the drivers door censor is on, it sets off other alerts like "shift to park" and "engine is on" because it thinks the doors are open and it continuously beeps or alerts me. this has been happening for almost one year. i took it to the dealership and they charged me to clean the latch. they said this had been an issue with other explorers and sometimes it helps, sometimes it does not. it did not help. i have been dealing with it for almost a year. the dome light stays on even when the keys are not in the ignition. these censors come on when the engine is started, in park, and sometimes randomly while driving.
I have goodyear fortera p245/65r17 105t tires as oem on this vehicle.the tread has dry rotted cracks just like the tires recalled in 2015.the first sign of problem was tire light coming on. why are these tire being recalled also?
The tailgate lift is unsafe. it does not detect when someone is under it when it lowers. i did not know the person behind the car had pushed the button on tailgate to lift it. my daughter had bent over placing things in back. unknown to me, i pushed the button inside car to lift the gate, but instead it lowered. it could have squeezed the breath out of my daughter.
Strange gaseous fumes noticed in 2013 ford explorer - most noticable at full throttle, driving on highway and coming to a stop. it persisted for couple of weeks so took car to dealer 12/29. mechanic could not smell anything and car returned with no fix. took car back in on jan 6th. dealer notified me of the service notification and perfromed a fix including exhaust replacement. problem was then resolved but i had to pay for teh issue which was obviously already known.
When accelerating there is a sulfur/rotten egg smell that comeshe from the exhaust, i first noticed it after i bought the car in october of 2015. i did not know what it was till i read the article of the police officer that crashes his cruiser.
Loss of power steering. after experiencing loss of power steering on multiple occasions i performed online research and became aware of safety recall 14s06. i contacted ford for resolution and they informed me my vehicle is not subject to recall. the vehicle with some 19,000 miles is our of warranty (>36 months). ford indicated that any repairs for this dangerous condition would be at owner expense. the vehicle was produced on the assembly line in chicago which was the origin of the vehicle defect which prompted the recall. however, it appears to have been assembled approximately 1 month after the recall cut-off. i contend that the defect was still present and the recall should be broadened. this is a serious defect with potential life threatening consequences. ford has been unreceptive in even investigating the matter. the vehicle was moving on the occasions when the power steering failed, while negotiating a curve. my professional driver indicated that the car had to be stopped and the vehicle restarted to reset the power steering. no driver feedback of a trouble code.
Weird smell when a/c is turned on and when accelerating.
Under heavy acceleration (i.e. highway on-ramp), a very strong odor (burning rubber, exhaust?) enters the cabin. this happens every time, whether the ac is on or off, recirculating or fresh air. the odor is extremely strong and lasts several minutes. i'm especially concerned for my 3 year old son who is exposed to this.
Exterior door handles loose and sticking.
I have 44,000 miles and over the past few months have been experiencing exhaust fumes entering the cabin after driving on the expressway for a period of time and coming to a stop with the defrost on and rear a/c
Exhaust small after high acceleration lasting about five minutes then diminishing. setting of the hvac system seems to be irrelevant, on or off. i previously brought this vehicle to my local ford dealer approximately a year ago (2015) for this specific exhaust smell issue but they said they couldn't duplicate the issue. this issue has been and continues to occur.
Exhaust gas entering the cabin during hard acceleration or when driving at sustained highway speeds. appears to be related to rear air conditioning sucking air from underneath rear of car!
Naging door jaar open sensor, for under 2 years its already faulting
Door handle broke off when pulling on the latch to open car door.
Carbon monoxide in the cabin. intermittent check engine light vin corrected - 2013 ford explorer xlt
I drove this vehicle cross country, while towing a truck on trailer, back while towing a trailer, and again with a u-haul from las vegas to virginia (up steep grades, and through the mountains, engine under quite a load, while in the summer, using a/c) i got a headache and nauseau. my daughter and nephew, who were passengers, did as well. i got sleepy behind the wheel (this doesn't happen to me and has never happened to me). you can smell the exhaust. i installed a carbon monoxide detector, and it has gone off twice. ford has done some "fixes" including reprogramming a/c. well, if you use the buttons, instead of the touch screen, you can unknowingly override this reprogramming. they did not tell me this. i go through the gears in the manual mode and drive this hard. you can still smell exhaust and get symptoms. borrow a fire fighters "sniffer" and drive the vehicle hard and watch the readout. it cant possibly take this long or be that difficult to resolve this investigation. you can even put a carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle and watch-simple. go through the gears manually, red-lining the vehicle you will get the smell and symptoms. drive the vehicle hard up a steep grade, you will get the symptoms. tow with the vehicle up a grade, you will get the smell and symptoms, all with a/c on recirculate. less so with out it being on recirculate. this has happened form the first trip of 09/07/2015 to current.
Drivers door panel is spitting apart at the seams. started around 42,000 miles. even w/ an extended warranty i was told it was cosmetic and i would have to pay for repairs. almost $1,000 in parts and labor.
Getting exhaust fumes in the cabin of vehicle at times. sometimes so bad that it makes you sick nauseous and headaches. ford refuses to fix problem under there warranty. it happens at any time slow or at highway speeds when using the ac or heater it is even worse.
Exhaust fumes entering the passenger compartment. vehicle in motion with the air conditioner on. the vehicle was taken to a ford dealership for repair. the dealer made a repair that was going to fix the problem but it made it worst. i took the vehicle back and they advised that they are waiting for ford engineers to figure out the problem. its been over two years now.
On several occasions within the past 3 weeks, while attempting to put our vehicle into "park" we received a warning light that we needed to "shift to park", except the shifter was placed in the park position every time; this occurred to both my husband and myself. i was afraid the vehicle would not stay in park on hills or slopes in parking lots and in my sloped driveway where there are lots of small children playing and riding bikes because of this warning and would roll away killing someone. recently, our explorer would not start, our key fobs would not lock or unlock the doors; i was stranded. this last time on august 24, 2015 i contacted ford roadside assistance to tow it to the closest ford dealership to find out what was wrong. turns out the shifter was defective and as a result it drained the battery. it cost me $672.39 to replace the shifter and the battery; which is a lot of money when your out of work/retired with health issues. i also kept the old part for evidence. i talked to another ford explorer owner who also had the same problem and to date there is no recall i suppose because no one is dead, yet.
Exhaust fumes are leaking inside the cabin while driving and after accelerating.
With acceleration an odor enters the cabin. windows must be rolled down to clear cabin of the smell. this happens consistently, causing great concern for my and my families health. i provide home health services, meaning i work out of my vehicle, driving to patients homes all day. i have complained about this before, to no avail. it would be nice if this situation was taken seriously.
When the a/c is on, or if the car is parked and idling, there is the smell of exhaust in the cab of the vehicle.
Despite the plethora of claims posted on this site about exhaust inside the cabin of 2011-2015 explorers, and repeated information that the "tsb" ford has issued does not work, nhtsa has failed to act. how dare you continue to allow so many lives to be put in unnecessary danger? what is the cost of life over ford's bottom line? who must die? is my accident where i suddenly passed out and wrecked not enough? do you know how it feels when you're told by a pediatrician that your 8 year old may have permanent brain and pulmonary damage from chronic exposure to carbon monoxide and exhaust? why have you done nothing? i'm a single mother who was willing to pay $52k so that i could have a safe vehicle for my family, and instead we are being poisoned. i have had this vehicle in 6 times with no resolution and ford refuses to buy it back. i have been repeatedly been lied to that the issue is the ptu and continued to drive with my children unaware we were being poisoned for 60k miles. i cannot afford another vehicle until a fix surfaces, what am i to do, drive around with the windows down? i don't feel that is acceptable in a $52,000 vehicle, do you? what about the potential long term health issues that are now surfacing? should i keep putting my kids in this car since it is my only means of transportation? would you put your 4 and 8 year olds in it? shame on the nhtsa for not taking this issue seriously and continuing to allow families to breath in such hazardous and life threatening fumes. i hope you all drive one of these vehicles and put your babies in them and they get sick, just like mine, so that maybe then you'll react. those that read this message should be embarrassed for your failure to do nothing over such a severe "design flaw", your failure to act makes you not just disgusting examples of human beings, but americans in particular. do i have your attention now?
The front edge of the hood has bubbling paint, dealer tried to have ford cover the repair but ford denied the repair. dealership instructed me to call ford customer service and file a complaint. ford customer service suggested i file a complaint here with nhtsa.
Radiator hose breached, decompressing radiator. radiator hose was rubbed open by nearby metal compressor line running perpendicular. hole was 1" by 1/2". radiator immediately emptied, engine overheated and shuddered. repair made by ford dealership only replaced hose and flushed coolant. ford did not remedy situation where metal compressor line is adjacent and sometimes in contact with radiator hose. i have photo and video proving the ac line rubbed the hose open.
My mechanic discovered rust bubbles on my hood on or about june of 2015 . it is very awful looking for a vehicle which is only 2 years old and parked where there is no river waters.
Paint is bubbling across the front edge of hood. ford is refusing to repair the problem.
Exhaust fumes are coming in the cab. strong smell when accelerating fast. my eyes burn and water everytime i drive it. my allergies have been off charts since we purchased it in may 2015. i took it to ford thinking i have bumper to bumper and 46000 miles left on my warranty so i thought they would solve it's problem. they call me at work and tell me it's not covered under warranty. they tell me it will cost me $700 to fix. i feel like that's on ford to fix.
I currently own a 2013 ford explorer that has approximately 51k miles. i've noticed on more than one occasion, that during periods of sustained driving we experience odor of certain gases or fumes. these odors are not constant, but they are present within the cab even while the windows are secure. again, the only experiences of these incidents so far are during periods of driving for 2 or more hours continuously. i've checked with the ford motor company, and searched online and i haven't found any recall information regarding emission problems of this nature. we, our family would appreciate if more research could be done on this matter. we personally believe that may lead to a health related illness/injury. sincereley [xxx] *bf 'information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *bf
Extremely bad exhaust fumes in car. brought to ford and was told i had grass in my engine, i said bs. brought back again and was told its under review. making me light headed while i drive. have to drive with my windows down all the time just so my kids don't smell it. seems the longer i drive the worst it gets.
Burnt oil smell during acceleration or long trips. this is easily repeatable and happens every time.
