Starting in april of 2014 when the car was only 9 months old the warning light came on "get to safety" overheating engine. it went to pleasantville ford where they replaced the engine. 1 month later all the transmission fluid fell out of the care. back to pleasantville ford where they replaced a part. over the next 8 months the warning over heating "get to safety" would happen another 7 times. ford would tow the car to pleasantville ford they would fix (a sensor, fill fluid, and give me the run around) the final time i filled a complaint with bbb. they got a ford mechanic from deer born, mi to look at the car. he replaced the radiator and right axial. only for two weeks later the same "get to safety" and the car dies again.

Vehicle bucked, lurched and went into "limp mode" and would not accelerate over 40 mph on a 70 mph interstate highway (just as i was trying to enter the highway) engine service light came on and i called ford roadside to have it towed to the dealership. this was actually the second time. this had happened previously but i cannot find the date - that time, i was entering the same interstate and the car did the same thing and i "limped" the car to the dealership (only being able to drive 40 mph on a 60 mph four lane highway.) on 6/3/2014, the car did the same thing as i was attempting to enter interstate 35 (70 mph) - again - bucking, lurching and then going into the "limp mode". very scared to drive this car anywhere as i fear being hit or killed on the highways because of the cars inability to go anywhere near the speed limit. this is very much a safety issue especially for the area that i live in because all the roadways around me are at least 60 mph or higher and ford has not been able to fix this problem. the car's engine is now idling very rough, too, so there are other issues with this engine. *tr
When i tried again to start up my car today, the powertrain was producing smoke. ford agreed to buyback my car in mid december 2013 but they have still not been following through on their written contract. i have contacted ford's rav dept along with emailing ford's tier1 customer support everytime my car has caught on fire. i have also let the dealer know of my issues. i have tweeted to @ford, @fordservice, @fordescape about my car. they are aware my car's overheating and transmission issues. no one from ford has offered to put me in a loaner car while they try to reissue my 'lost' buyback check. they'd rather me drive around a car that catches on fire. i suspect they are trying to hit a quarterly goal and are stalling to q2. i paid cash for my car so i'm sure my buyback is impacting their budgeting. the smoke from the powertrain triggered my asthma. *tr
One day when i started my car it came up with the error message "engine fault, service vehicle now!". i got a fright, restarted the car and the error message was gone and i could drive it home. the next day the message came up again, i tried to drive it and it was clunky and wouldn't go past first gear. i pulled over and restarted the car and it worked fine again. it happened again the following day so i took it into the service center. the service center was unable to recreate the problem and could not find anything wrong in the car. they looked into the car computer's logs and couldn't find anything there either. since then the problem has happened 9-10 times and it is unsafe for me and my family to drive when the car is reporting the error. we cannot drive it while the error is on and the dealership say they cannot fix it unless the error is showing. *js

While driving the vehicle to the dealer to be inspected under nhtsa recall 13v583 when the engine reached 3000 rpm's huge volumes of blue smoke came out of exhaust system. while at the dealer the dealer performed the recall inspection and related tests, which resulted in replacement of the water pump and in the dealers words "all coolant system and related modifications per extensive recall" ford recall 13s12c and 13s12d. the dealer would not confirm that the recall had been repaired or eliminated for this vehicle after these repairs were completed. most of the parts listed to address the recall make sense except the replacement of the oil dipstick. the dealer also addressed the blue smoke issue and in the dealers words "found excessive oil in the turbo and excessive play in the turbine wheel". this resulted in the replacement of the turbo. please note that this engine is the troubled 2013 1.6 liter ecoboost engine. the parts that failed and were replaced should not have failed on an engine with only 8449 miles on it. the vehicle was in the shop from march 18th until april 1st to get repaired. also understand that we do not have an issue with the dealer, we feel they have done what they can to resolve these defects in this engine. we are concerned that nhtsa has not done enough to get this troubled engine off the streets and we are also concerned that there still has not been full disclosure from ford of what is wrong with this engine that is causing multiple recalls. *tr
My automatic transmission is not shifting when i drive uphill and it's causing the engine to rev at redline. when i was driving back from la over the weekend, the car struggled the entire drive. something was burning under the hood. the engine was also overheating while driving uphill. ford agreed to buyback this death trap in mid dec 2013 but they have been stalling the entire process. apparently my check is missing. i don't want to be in this car when either it burst into flames, the transmission or engine seizes. *tr
The car stalls intermittently. the first time 3/11/2014 was the day following my service for oil change and tire rotation. i was pulling away from my house and the car just stalled. i put it into park and the car restarted. the next time was 3/17/2014, again i was pulling away from my house and the car stalled, started beeping and a service engine now light came on. i restarted the car, parked and called the dealership. a towing company picked up the car and took it to the dealer. the dealer informed me that nothing showed up in the memory and they could not do anything because it wasn't happening for them. they kept the car for several days before i picked it up. approximately 2 weeks later the car stalled again while i was on the freeway on ramp. i tried to call the dealer but the phone would not work. ford took the car again and could not find anything in the memory. within 2 weeks this happened again while getting onto the freeway. in addition to the stalling problem, the sync system has reset itself, the compasses are not functioning properly, the external temperature gauge doesn't work all the time and now the phone randomly starts calling people. i was given a phone number for corporate by the dealership. i called and after playing phone tag for several days the representative (joshua) told me that if it stalls again that i should not attempt to restart the car and i need to call the roadside assistance number and wait for them to come. in addition, he said under no circumstances should they attempt to restart the car because if they do it will reset the memory and ford cannot fix the problem. i asked about the recalls on my car and was told there were none; however, i was on the website and there are 2. i asked why ford did not send me a recall notice and he told me that ford doesn't do that. i am afraid to drive my car. its been to ford 7 times now. help! *js
Coolant leaks, was repaired in 2014 per recall. coolant leak issue keeps happening.
Driving in parking lot fan speed accelerated and then engine shut off. i tried starting again 3 times and the same thing happened. i called aaa and had the car towed to hyundai dealership in reno where we purchased the car. there was a smell of burning in the engine. the dealer reported the smoke was coming from under the hood of the air compressor clutch coil is internal short cause burning smoke. they recommended replacing the air compressor. ford said my car is not included in their recall list. *tr

This is an intermittent power loss issue on a 2013 ford escape purchased on december 31, 2013. we have had the issue since that date. at speeds under 35mph and always while making a turn, the vehicle loses all power and must be coasted to a safe spot, stopped, put into park, and then turning the key to restart. this issue happens 1-4 times a week during daily use. we have taken it to the dealer ship 3 times. the first two times i notified them of the issue verbally, but since it did not happen during their test drives, nothing was done or noted. this last time, the issue occurred on december 24, 2014, while making a left hand turn through a city intersection that also put the vehicle on a slight incline, the power was lost, and we could not coast to safety to restart the vehicle. another vehicle had to lock its brakes to avoid a collision. on jan 2, 2015 i took the vehicle back to lakewood ford in lakewood, wa where it was purchased. they had the vehicle from jan 2 - jan 9 2015. they test drove it a total of 26 miles. they did not use a "flight recorder" to capture any data. the vehicle is still under warranty and i will be taking it to every ford dealership i can find until one of them acknowledges and repairs the issue. i will also be recording video of the issue. the camera will capture the instrumentation and road. *tr

I was ~350 miles from home in n. minnesota on 2/7/2013 and was accelerating from ~30 mph to 55 mph when the vehicle started to shake violently and loose power. a default message appeared on driver's information display followed by an ok message. the vehicle continued to shake and would not accelerate past ~5mph. i pulled into a local business parking lot and turned off the engine. i then added a bottle of gas line antifreeze believing there was a fuel problem since the outdoor temperature was extremely cold (-20 f to ?? 30f) and i had refuel ~75 miles before. after the addition of a bottle of fuel line antifreeze i immediately started the engine. i proceeded to the local ford dealer to have the vehicle checked out. the technician could not find an error code. the vehicle performed normally until the problem reappeared march 30th at ~ 19,500 miles (again in n. mn). a default message re-appeared on driver's information display followed by an ok message. after pulling over on the shoulder of the road, i shut off the engine and immediately restarted it. the engine has performed as normal since the second incident. after return to my home i reported the problem to the local ford dealership. the dealer maintenance department consulted with ford motor company for a service recommendation. the vehicle was serviced on 3/9/2014 per ford's recommendation at ~ 20,000. again there was no error message stored on the vehicles computer. *tr

The heat shield on the undercarriage of the car is very cheaply made and is falling apart. it is basically fiberglass insulation covered with shiny aluminum foil. it is very flimsy and exposed to the elements. the shielding has come loose and the more i drive, the more the wind pulls it and tears it from the car. it is now hanging down from the undercarriage and almost touching the ground, laying over the exhaust and directly touching it. this seems to be a very hazardous situation. it seems to be a very poor design to have something that is so delicate and flimsy to be directly exposed just inches from the ground on the undercarriage where any sort of road debris could easily damage it and cause it come into direct contact with a hot exhaust pipe. i'm sure once it catches on something it would be easily ripped free of the vehicle and leave absolutely no heat shielding between the exhaust and the floorboard. *tr
On 12/14/13 at approx 6:55pm i was traveling at 40mph. i hear ding ding ding and noticed my vehicle is losing speed and immediately looking at gauges my temp gauge is on hot. error message displays high temp, slow down, stop safely, engine speed has been reduced.!! i was so alarmed at what was happening had i thought quicker i should have taken a picture with my phone of the message. i was on a highway where i could not get off the road, only slow down and pull to the right. i got stopped and shut car off. waited a few minutes and started car back up. message instrument displays the same message. then message disappears and i drive to my destination 3 miles away very slow . reaching my destination i get out of the vehicle and the smell of engine coolant is very strong. no leaks of any kind observed. it has now been 15 minutes later and the smell of engine coolant is still very pungent. i had contacted the dealership this past week on monday 12/9/13 regarding the smell of coolant and a recall i was told about. i was advised by the service advisor for the recall parts were not yet available and to continue driving the vehicle and if i encountered a issue to immediately stop driving the vehicle and have it towed to there facility and i would be placed in a loaner vehicle until my car was fixed. now at this point i do not feel safe to continue driving this vehicle. the recall i was informed about is related to a engine overheating issue and possible fire could result due to something with oil. please help. this issue was witnessed by my passenger. *tr
In sep 2013 escape with ecoboost engine died either when slowing for a stop sign or (worse) when slowing down via coasting on transition ramp between two freeways at about 30 miles per hour. this required stopping car and putting in park so that engine could be restarted. serious safety concern: i am very concerned that i could be rear ended on the freeway due to this. ford claimed this was a known problem fixed by ford tsb 13-7-5 which indicates this issue is due to corrosion of connection terminals of the supercharger for 1.6l or 2.0 l escape engine. result was replacement of wire harness which appeared to make engine run better. in nov/dec 2013 engine died again twice within about two weeks at about 30 mph when slowing and transitioning between freeways on ramp. later, after getting gas, car exhibited "engine fault - service engine now" message when i started the car after fueling. had car towed to ford. ford states problem is fixed by tsb 13-12-12 (applied yesterday) which supersedes tsb 13-7-5 . i am not confident this will fix the issue and believe there may be a problem with the computer when slowing down via coasting rather than breaking. *tr
Now that it is colder out, my car has gone from overheating to misfiring from the defective cac/torque converter in this car. i've noticed that the misfiring does not show up on the check engine light or was able to be read by my obd reader. misfiring can ruin the catalytic converter and cause emission issues. it is illegal in california (where i'm a resident) to not follow the obd ii protocol for reporting emission problems since we have this inspected for registration. when my car has overheated, only ford was able to pull the code & i also didn't get a check engine light. it's apparent now that ford has rigged the obd in this car so that only they can retrieve codes. misfiring is easy for you to replicate to verify my statement. unplug one cylinder, start the car, see if you get a flashing check engine light and a p030x code. *tr

Engine fault, service engine now. automobile loss of power, stall, engine cuts off completely at any given time. hopefully to help so many people on this site with the same problem. my vehicle did this for many months and always the same answer from ford and dealership...no error code so nothing is wrong. finally it happened as i pulled up to dealership for oil change. so they could clearly see what the car was doing and there was an error code. i looks to be addressed by ford tsb 13-7-5 superseded by ford tsb 13-12-12 wiring harness fault in signal return splices. why has nhtsa and ford motor company not nationally published this information so all dealership understand (hopefully) the solution to this very dangerous problem. amazing so many dealership are not aware of all ford tsb's. *tr
After driving approximately 90 miles without a stop, stopped at traffic signal, vehicle engine went completely dead. put in park and it restarted. did this again approximately 11 times during the day. engine just cut off completely at every traffic stop. took to dealer. dealer very responsive but can get no error code and does not know why it is happening. they can not get it to cut off while driving it only a few miles at a time. this it the 2.0 l engine and i see other people are experiencing the same problem with no fix. dealer has vehicle trying to figure out why it is happening. how about ford motor company stepping up and addressing the problem before someone gets hurt or killed in an accident. *tr
My 2013 ford escape stalled twice while going slow on a local road in july of this year. after the second stall (a week apart) i brought it in for service (levittown ford) and they could not find nor recreate the problem (they had it 4 days). it stalled again twice on sunday october 13, 2013, once going through the ez pass lane at the verrazano bridge and again about 45 mins later on a secondary road in nj, again going slow (under 15 mph). we reported this to levittown ford service and also to corporate. the service department told me that when it happens again we shouldn't restart the car and call for ford roadside assistance. corporate has not returned my call. we are concerned that we may get rear ended in a serious accident if the car stalls again and the car / truck behind us doesn't stop in time (e.g. harry chapin on the lie) i don't believe the break lights would go on since the car completely shuts off. we transport our two grandchildren two days a week from school / nursery school and are extremely concerned. is there anything we can do? *tr
2013 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to "engine fault- service now" warning appeared on the dash when starting vehicle. consumer states vehicle stalled and lost all power. *smd the consumer stated the first engine fault light happened in october 2013. he turned the engine off and re-started it again, and the light didn't come back on. the second fault occurrence as he was leaving the house in mid-february. the vehicle moved very sluggishly and didn't appear to be getting any power. on march 15, 2014, the vehicle stalled and lost all power. the only message that displayed said to put the vehicle in park. fortunately, the vehicle started again. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but a diagnostic test didn't reveal any problems. the dealer kept the vehicle for 2 weeks, with no success in finding a problem. the next morning, the engine fault service no error message appeared on the dash. when his wife attempted to drive away, the vehicle accelerated sharply and took off down the road at a high rate of speed, leaving her with no control of the acceleration or speed of the vehicle. she applied the brakes, and the vehicle stopped. the consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer, and on the way there, it repeatedly sputtered and then it suddenly accelerated and lunged forward all the way to dealer. even the engine fault code displayed on the dash, the mechanic was unable to get an error code on the computer. the mechanic test drove the vehicle with the consumer, and it was then the vehicle exhibited everything the consumer was referring to. when they returned, the mechanic, hooked the computer back to the vehicle, and an error showed a harness issue, which was related to a wire splicing into two wires, which somehow became tangled during assembly. *jb
Vehicle started with warning 'engine fault service now'. restarted vehicle and message was gone. later that day while driving we noticed severe jerking of the vehicle while changing speeds and noticed the engine fault warning was displayed. pulled vehicle over. restarted and the warning was gone. brought to dealer for over 2 days and they were unable to reproduce error and therefore unable to fix anything. months later the problem started recurring again while reducing speed on a highway exit resulting in extreme vehicle jerking as if transmission was failing, at this time we noticed the engine fault warning had reappeared. contacted ford service center and they will take another look, but without a recall there will be nothing that can do. with so many similar complaints it is astonishing that this is not a known resolvable issue for ford. *tr
Within just 3 weeks of purchasing our certified pre-owned 2013 escape titanium (16k miles), the vehicle stalled twice while stopping at an intersection. dash lights come on, put it in park, turn it off and restart and i am back on the road. now 2 months since purchase, it has stalled like this 7 times. a few times, we have gotten the "engine fault take vehicle for service" message when starting the vehicle, but this does not coincide with the days of the stalls. i have taken it to the local ford dealership twice to no avail. the vehicles computer is not storing any codes to identify the failure. technicians have driven the vehicle extensively with a laptop constantly diagnosing searching for issues. nothing. this is truly unbelievable to me that this problem is possible in a new vehicle, let alone that it cannot be diagnosed! i am very worried after reading other complaints on this site that it may just be a matter of time before it stalls in busy traffic. *js
On august 30, 2013, i was slowing down to pull into a driveway and the car lost all power. luckily, i was at the driveway and it was downhill so the car rolled in. i couldn't figure out what was going on at first. i called the dealer immediately and was told to bring it in. i did and they said some people had complained of this issue but it wasn't a recall or service bulletin. they did a software update and told me i shouldn't have a problem. not good enough. they couldn't tell me this would fix the problem. now i am left to worry that this could happen at any time. not acceptable. yesterday, september 23, it happened again as i was stopping at a stop sign. what can i do about this? i have had this car for 9 months. i am past frustrated. the dealership doesn't seem concerned at all about what is going on. $36,000 dollars and i am left with an unsafe vehicle. *js

I was driving slowly in a parking lot, coasting, when the engine died. i was able to restart it after putting it into park. the issue has happened twice more, once on the highway, once on a city street. both times happened when the car was coasting. i was lucky to have been able to pull over safely and restart the car. separately, i have experienced the rough engine start so many others on this website have complained about. the sequence is you turn on the engine, it idles roughly, can't accelerate away from the curb, and jerks forward when you try. you have to shut down the engine, let it calm itself down and restart. sometimes it's fine, sometimes you have to repeat. i mentioned it when we took it in for its first service, but ford didn't find anything wrong. i'm shocked that neither ford nor the government has done anything, despite dozens of complaints of exactly the same issue. that is not a statistical fluke, it is defective vehicle and i hope neither ford nor this agency screw up again the way gm and this agency did with the ignition issue. *tr
2013 ford escape 2.0 ecoboost stalled at a stop sign 8/21/13. the car stereo shut off first then a oil light went on and the car completely turned off. i was able to put it in park and restart the car like nothing happened. the ford dealership said there were error codes but they could not duplicate the problem. nothing was fixed told us to keep driving it until it happened again. we were not happy. today 9/7/13, this time the car stalled at a stoplight, but the power stayed on oil light was on. there were no rpms. had to put car in park and restart. we started to drive to the dealership and it stalled a 2nd time about a half mile away same issue every time the red oil light appears. we have no answer to what is causing this problem.
I started the car and an "engine fault failure service now" came one. when trying to back up it would idle very roughly and jump forward. when you turn it off and re-start it, it works fine again. this is the 2nd time this has happened to this car. it was just serviced last week for the exact same issue and a map sensor was replaced. *tr

After driving a 1/2 mile from my home my 2013 ford escape overheated and said "stop safely temperature high" or something to that extent. the vehicle then became inoperable and i managed to coast to a safe location. the coolant cap had exploded off the tank and my motor was covered with fluid. the dealership keep my car for 5 days and could not find a diagnosis but they did manage to add 100 miles to it and use all my gas. presently the vehicle smells like burnt coolant while driving it and now idles high in park. i am afraid to drive the vehicle for safety reasons. ford has not offered any resolution or help. i'm not sure what to do. they say my vin wasn't part of the recall but i find that hard to believe and i am driving around in a ticking fire hazard. *tr
Was driving on manetto hill road in plainview, ny when vehicle stalled. no power to the accelerator. kept pressing the gas, and the car didn't move. no warning chimes, no appearance of anything wrong-radio was playing, ac, etc. was able to pull over (roll to the side of the road), put the car in park and restarted it. the computer then showed "engine fault service now" drove to a local gas station, though the car was bucking and difficult to drive. car was then towed to dealership service station. have learned that there are multiple tsb's issued for my car, but no recall. parts are not available so the car remains at dealership service station. i was lucky i was not in rush hour traffic or on/getting on or off a highway when the car died. i shudder to think what would have happened then. *tr
My 2013 ford escape has had a issue of stalling while at intersections or driving at slow speeds the radio and ac is still working but the engine is dead if you are not paying attention you could roll out into and interception and you car be dead and you have to put it in park to restart it this has happened many times to my wife she has almost got hit multiple times with the last one being a semi truck everytime i take it to for they tell me they cant find in fault codes they don't know what to fix so they just tell me to go with it i have filed an official complaint with ford corp. office still with no results basically what they are saying is if they cant find a code they cant fix anything so am i just supposed to let my wife drive a unsafe car and get her and my son killed and if you look online there has been thousands of people saying the same complaint and ford telling them the same thing so something is wrong we need help. *tr
While driving the vehicle engine stalls. no lights, no warning, if gas is not accelerated i have lost engine 4 times. 3 times it wouldn't start while parked, and 4 additional times while driving the engine stalled completely, no warning on the expressway in chicago. i drove straight to dealer and left it there, had to put car in neutral if i let off the gas in order to rev engine to keep from stalling a 5th time. this has happened over and over the last few weeks. the dealer (fair oaks ford, naperville, il) is telling me there are no 'codes' showing anything is wrong. this vehicle is unsafe to drive and has 7,000 miles. i have brought vehicle in twice for the same issues, thus far to no avail. i cannot drive this vehicle in this condition. it's unsafe and there is no remedy. *tr
The check engine light comes on intermittently, and stays on for about 48 hours. when i have taken it to the dealership they cannot find out why the light is coming on because the code is no longer visible. the car idles rough and cuts off when the car is warm and i'm stopped in traffic, at a red light for example. it is very dangerous to have my car cut off in inner-city traffic. it also occurred once when i was trying to start the car after being off for about 20 minutes. i had to start it 3 times in order for it to stay on. each time, it idled very roughly and cut off within a few seconds. *tr
