The coolant low warning was triggered a few times. i checked and the coolant was really low and had to add a lot to the right level. it might have the coolant leaking problems that is similar to the other 2013 escapes being recalled. but mine was not included in the recall.
Since purchasing this ford escape sel 1.6l, i've had repeated issues with coolant loss. every time i've flagged it to the dealer, they brush me off and have filled up the coolant, saying they can't source the issue. i've been concerned that i've had a cracked cylinder head ever since the 13s12 recall in 2014. in recent years, the coolant loss issue had accelerated dramatically. it is unpredictable. and when it happens, the coolant will suddenly go from an ok level to substantially below minimum. furthermore, the engine has a persistent burning smell over the past couple of years. i've had to drive around with a jug of coolant and a plastic solo cup to refill the coolant tank whenever the low coolant light lights up. over the past 2 years, i've had to refill the coolant at least a dozen times. overall, i am concerned this was a fundamental flaw from the very beginning, and instead of doing the proper thing and rebuilding/replacing engines back in 2014 when the 13s12 recall occurred, ford put a band-aid over it and now the issues are re-arising just when so all the vehicles have had their warranties lapse. i do hope the nhtsa forces ford to do the right thing here.
First incident: august 3rd 2016 while driving 50mph car displayed a engine overheating warning message and slowed down as i pulled off the road. after a few minutes i was able to drive again and the message did not reappear, the check engine light was on. i took the car to kearney person ford 7303 clairemont mesa blvd san diego, ca 92111 they told me they couldn't find anything wrong and turned the check engine light off. second incident: driving to work earlier this year 2017 i got the same message that my engine coolant was low, and to slow down because of critical overheating, even though i had just had the car serviced for a regular maintenance check, once again at kearny person ford. i was driving normally on a road at around 30-40mph but accelerating when the message popped up. i refiled the coolant as the check engine light did not turn on. third incident: this was the most dangerous time. critical engine overheating message and low coolant message popped up without warning while driving up hill in traffic going about 20mph on the i-5s at the in california grapevine. the engine nearly shut off and limped on just a couple cylinders as i tried to get to the shoulder. smoke was coming out from under the hood and the engine was hot. it all happened immediately and without warning, the temp gauge was normal and then bam! overheated with warning messages crippling the car. driving slowly but the weather was hot it was nearly 110 degrees outside. seems super dangerous. because of the lack of warning when these incidents happen. the way that the coolant just disappears, and the smoke and chance of fire.
Vacuum pump seized up causing the bolt connecting it to the camshaft to shear off and damage the turbo's and engine. this happened while going 70 mph on a freeway. i had to use evasive action to get it off the road.
Around 10 months ago we put a new transmission in this car at a ford dealership, two weeks later the car overheated. $750 later we know it the engine is cracked. still owe like $9,000 on it... this car had all oil changes and everything has needed.
Our 2013 ford escape sel has been stalling out while driving. our vin was not included in the previous recall but the symptoms ate exactly as described in 2.0 liter recall. this event happens every couple days sometimes twice a day. it tends to happen shortly after starting and merging/turning from a stop/intersection. we've taken it to a ford dealer but they weren't able to fix it. seems like a big safety issue to stall while driving.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. on several occasions, the engine coolant indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to carriage ford inc at (812) 284-4444 (908 e lewis and clark pkwy, clarksville, in 47129) where it was diagnosed that the radiator needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. on another occasion, the contact noticed coolant had leaked onto the ground. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where the diagnosis was unknown. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred and the coolant engine indicator illuminated. the contact returned to carriage ford inc, but the vehicle was not diagnosed. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 12v551000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified and stated that the vin was not included in a recall. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000.
At times, engine fault - service immediately warning appears upon starting car. car hesitates, jerks and has limited acceleration. both map sensors have been changed. problem still exists. ford refuses to replace wiring harness at their cost. escapes have been recalled for this matter. however, ford is saying that ours is not covered under previously issued recalls.
Coolant leaking from engine requiring new coolant reservoir, thermostat, belt and pulley. $1500. check engine light still comes on indicating possible valve issue causing car to overheat. diagnostic code p26b7
After purchasing a 2103 ford escape about six months later i noticed a low coolant light on in the vehicle. i took it to the ford dealership who reported the coolant bypass valve needed repair. the vehicle was no longer under warranty so i paid out of pocket for the repair. six months later the low coolant light is on again and heading to the dealership for another repair. there are numerous complaints regarding this issue and the repeated repairs. we as owners of ford escape should not be assuming the cost of repair every six months for something that should be on a recall list.
The car is overheating with no warning lights or anything this is not a stand alone problem many people are having this issue i parked the car then went to restart it and the warning sign came up saying the engine was hot an the gauge went to the red
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while operating the vehicle, the 'coolant low' message appeared. after coolant was added to the vehicle, the message went away. the contact indicated that the message displayed hours after checking the coolant levels, which were normal. on several occasions, coolant was found under the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 110,000. *tt
I had a code po456 and p1450. the car runs extremely rough when in motion or sitting with the engine running the car also is using a lot of gas sometimes when i need to pull off from a stop light it excellorate or hesitate or cut off completely. also the check engine light is on sometimes it will go out then it comes back on
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. within a week of owning the vehicle, the rear passenger door failed to properly close when opened. the contact had to constantly double check to ensure that all of the doors were secured due to the failure. the contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages). the dealer (brandon ford, 9090 e adamo dr, tampa, fl 33619, (813) 246-3673) scheduled an appointment for the recall repair and was to diagnose the cause of the failure. in addition, the service engine and coolant warning indicators randomly illuminated. the vehicle hesitated and stalled without warning. also, the driver's side floorboard area was not structurally sound and began buckling. the manufacturer was notified of the failures. the failure mileage was not available. parts distribution disconnect.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and attempted to restart the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. the vehicle was towed to the dealer (courtesy ford, 455 providence rd, brooklyn, ct 06234, (860)-774-3673) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 146,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle started overheating and the check engine and low coolant warning indicators illuminated. the contact was able to pull off the roadway and turn off the ignition. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the water pump failed. the water pump was replaced and the coolant was refilled. the next day, while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and thick, black smoke was seen coming from the engine and rear of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the turbo failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. two days later, while driving at unknown speeds, a strong fuel odor was detected in the cabin of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic. the diagnosis was unknown, but the mechanic stated that fuel leaks were a common issue with ford vehicles. the manufacturer was notified and confirmed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 12v551000 (engine and engine cooling) and 12v336000 (fuel system, gasoline). the approximate failure mileage was 39,000.
Coolant water pump failure, after belt come off locking steering wheel
If this happened on the interstate we could be killed(dead). our escape has only 10,800 miles on it, and is driven by my wife. she drove it in town for about 15 miles 2 days previously. on this day, she started the car. idled it for about 3 minutes, put it in gear and 400 ft. later the dash light said shut down engine, overheat. the gas pedal was in op.. the car would only go about 1 mile per hour. no matter what i did to the gas pedal it would not allow the car to do more than idle. i checked under the hood and saw no leaks, the radiator reservoir was about 1/2 full. we had the car towed to landmark ford in spfd, il 5 days later they told me that the radiator hose had a hole in it. (they threw the hose away and would not let me see it) we have absolutely no leakage stains on our driveway. they charged me $429.49 to replace the radiator hose. i checked the cost of the motorcraft hose at the autoparts store it was $28.66. i am long ago retired , but was certified in many different engine repair types. the 1st thing we always checked was the thermostat. they did not test or replace the thermostat according to their bill. i suspect fraud from the dealer, but this is not your concern. what is the concern is the probable cause of injury or death when the engine computer lights the dash and stops the accelerator function. on a highway that can and probably will cause an accident.. thank you --[xxx], [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*jb
Continual loss of coolant. i took car to dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to determine reason for coolant loss. no noticeable evidence of loss such as drips or pools of coolant. no experience of stalling or overheating as long as i replace lost coolant once it reaches "add coolant" level, which occurs about every 4-6 months. i am not sure when this first occurred as my coolant was "topped off" with every oil change every 6 months. since i no longer drive many miles i do not change oil every 6 months and started noticing the low coolant levels myself in june 2017 and have been adding coolant myself since then.
2013 ford escape se 1.6 l 4cyl i hope there is an investigation that is on going. my ford is over heating and sometimes it wont start because of a software fix that was supposed to fix the problem. turns out it delays the inevitable. my car is now at the ford dealer for the second time. to make things worse, i woke up one day and my power steering didnt work. i go to work with no power steering and when i start it again it works, very weird. all in all, i do not think ford did enough. the coolant system or the engine needs to be replaced.
Engine caught on fire and was only less than 5 miles from home, no warning signs no computer indicating problems, no oil leaks no coolant problems. happened on my way to work, driving on a city street going 40mph, happened around 615am. smoke -was pouring out of the engine compartment, pulled into a 7-11 gas station and a concerned citizen came to help, he opened the hood and removed the engine cover and i saw flames coming from the back of the engine by the firewall, he used an extinguisher to put it out. car was towed to my house and insurance called, it was sent to a garage per insurance but it was then sent onto a ford dealership, they are now looking to see if it is caused by a recall.
Engine coolant leaks, engine failure, not corrected by dealer
I went to a used car dealership on 05/20/2017, saw the 2013 ford escape and was very interested. i test drove the car multiple times, checked for everything i knew to check for and decided that i wanted to purchase the vehicle. on my drive home ( 2 hour drive) because i have always shopped through the same dealer, and halfway home my check engine light came on. i took it to the shop yesterday 05/23/2017 and found out that the turbocharger engine was not working, i wasn't even aware that this car had a turbo charger engine.. kind of surprised ford would put a turbocharge engine in a suv. anyway, i was informed that the part wouldn't cause immediate damage, but eventually the turbo engine would start falling apart and would cause metal debris to shoot into my exhaust, causing a whole world of other issues. the part to have replaced is on back order until august because apparently many people with the same car are having the same issues. its going to cost me 1400.00 to fix this issues because i bought the car "as is". not only that, but the mechanic said that the car doesn't even need a turbocharger engine, but since it was built in, its something you have to keep, you cant just get rid of it. and approximately every 50k miles, its going to need replaced again!!! i was never made aware of any of this when i purchased the car, and am now stuck paying 11k for a car that isn't worth anything to anyone who knows about the major issues it will continue to have. not to mention the list of insane recalls. i feel like i was lied to, mislead about the condition of the car but unfortunately, as far as i can tell, there isn't anything i can do about it. anyone can contact me with suggestions or comments through my personal email : [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Intermittent check engine light (happens when in park or when driving). hooked up to code reader and got p026b7; found online that the the engine coolant bypass valve is defective, but not recalled (tsb 13-02-15). dealer confirms code and that engine coolant bypass valve is defective and should be replaced but referenced tsb 16-0052. despite the part being so defective it has been discontinued, redesigned, and replaced the dealer claims it isn't covered under any form of warranty.
I've owned my vehicle for 1 1/2 years and 5 times now it has lost engine coolant. there is a recall on this issue and my vehicle meets all criteria to be included in the recall but the dealer said that the vin number is not included. the dealer has changed the water pump, pressure tested, replaced the battery and replaced the heater hose. at this point, it is still losing fluid and the dealer states that if i want the work done that the recall recommends, i will have to pay for it myself. i purchased the vehicle 3/2/17 and this started 5/16/17,.
My 2013 escape is having all of the issues that are talked about in the recall of 2014 escapes regarding low engine coolant causing engine fires. the water pump has already needed to be replaced and now the "low engine coolant" warning comes on repeatedly. why are 2013 escapes not included in the recall announced in march?
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle shook and suddenly stalled. the contact had to place the vehicle in neutral and restart the vehicle before the gear could be switched to drive once the vehicle was started. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer (auto nation) where it was diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be identified. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 64,000. *tr
Catastrophic loss of braking at 65 mph on highway without warning. saturday evening april, 29, 2017 on i-85 southbound while slowing from 65 mph to exit at south hill, va driver (daughter) applied brakes and had no power assist. this produced a pedal that was stiff and her entire body weight had to be used to cause any slowing. the vehicle was stopped using the grade of the ramp and e brake. the vehicle had no warning lights or indications of failure. after towing it home sunday april 30th it was taken to the dealership. they diagnosed a vacuum pump failure. the vacuum pump being solely responsible for the braking system causes immediate loss of braking on failure. the failure was caused by conditions similar to those present in the belt driven vacuum pump on 2011-2012 ford f-150 ecoboost. several days later when the dealership attempted to fix the vacuum pump they found that the failure caused the cam core coupler to shear. this allowed metal shards into the oil which then carried them to the engine and turbo damaging both. the dealership came back with an estimate of $6000 for just the repairs with a new engine, however they informed us that the turbo needed to be replaced as well due to the damage. workers at the dealership reported that the cost to fix the car far outstripped the residual value. mileage failure was 60,921. due to the 921 miles ford has thus far refused to consider any reconciliation. after extensive research we have found that this failure is common among ecoboost engines and may be more prevalent than immediately evident. a braking failure of this magnitude could easily cause serious injuries or fatalities. in the case of most wrecks involving privately owned vehicles thorough investigation of cause is uncommon. if the occupants were unable to recall or communicate the cause of the wreck due to injury or death it would go unreported.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving unknown speeds, a fuel odor entered the vehicle and the engine seized without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel line was ruptured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 105,000.
I bought a used 2013 ford escape from dealership on 3/9/17. car had 1 previous owner and 29265 miles on it. by 4/20/17 the car would not start while stationary with no indication of anything being wrong. i had the dealership look at it immediately when this happened after getting it towed by aaa whom also tested the starter and battery everything was reading normal . the car started on its own. and the dalership coukd find tge problem and told me to bring it back if this happened again. a week later it happened again while the car was stationary at cvs after being driven for 10 minutes i called the dealership and aaa, after waiting 45 minutes for aaa to arrive i try starting the car several times with no avail until i see aaa pulling into the cvs parking lot i tested turned the key 1 more time and the car started. the aaa tech checked the starter and battery again everthing read normal. i drove to the dealership and left with the same outcome of them not knowing what is wrong. this problem continued until my warranty ran out and the dealership said they could not help me anymore because the car is still driveable. i tried exercising the lemon law by reporting the dealership to office of consumer affairs and business regulation and was told they can only mediate and not much coukd be done because my warranty was over. here we are 8/12/2018 and the car still has problems and will start after waiting anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours also it,constantly leaks atifreeze and has to be refilled every few weeks during the summer months the car will say " high temperature coolant low" out of the blue without any indication from the temperature gauge. i dont know what to do and dont have the time or money to deal with this.
After short drives and usually a 15 minute to 30 minute rest, the car starts up but after short drives the car begins to stall out like fuel is cut off and dies after driving a very short distance. putting the car in neutral and giving it gas does not stabilize the car and it dies. does do this all the time but it has happened 7 or 8 times over a 2 month period.. the mechanic finds nothing wrong and no service info from ford
My car will not hold coolant. has been to shop many times.overheats. shuts down. a huge recall on this however ford won't fix mine because it was already recalled for same reason in 2014 and supposedly fixed. it's dangerous and ford won't work w me at all. engines have been reported engine fires due to this. has happened about 20 times in a year and a half. they won't fix it.
Car is loosing coolant and smoking when started. car smells like something is burning.
Coolant leak that could cause possible fire, 12v551000 still not resolved for my car. smell of vaporizing coolant every time i accelerate, coolant depletes way faster than a normal car. mechanics don't find leaks in hoses or lines.
Car has been losing coolant during the past year. i have added coolant whenever low-level alarm came on, and taken to mechanic multiple times without any leak being discovered. coolant needs to be added at least once a month. i noticed a recall on 2014 1.6l ford escapes for this issue, but the same problem exists with my 2013 1.6l.
2013 ford kuga 60,000 km. automatic transmission. engine stalls at random while driving. stalls both at high and low speeds. has been into dealer for service for two months, for the first 7 weeks they "could not fix it because they could not find an error code". after i drove it in a circle around the dealer for hours i was able to show them the problem and they obtained an error code, 'solenoid'. ford says "maybe just replace whole transmission because we're not sure of the problem"
Our escape developed a cracked cylinder head that is allowing coolant to leak into the engine. we purchased it used less than two years ago. at the time it had 55k miles and no active recalls. currently there is 65k miles on the escape. multiple recalls for this engine has been issued many have which resulted in a similar engine problem. supposedly ford has performed the recall work this our car, but this problem has come up. they want us to pay for the repair work even though it seems likely that it's related to recall repairs that were not correctly completed. the recalls associated with this engine are #13v583000, 12v551000, 12v431000. the first involves a cracked head and the other two involve leaking coolant (we've lost an entire reserve tank in a short period of time). when we took it in the first time to have it checked they performed a pressure test and could not locate any coolant leaks and told us to continue driving it until it registered with low coolant again. this second time was when we brought it in and they told us about the cracked cylinder head.
Since the recall on the coolant system, the coolant low warning has come on several times. i have been told by ford service managers several times that the closed system has an air bubble in it. however, the coolant level is low and does require additional fluid. the low coolant warning comes on at start up (ignition). once it goes on, it may stay on or go off and on over several days. there has never been evidence of a leak identified by a service technician or in fluid left after parking (puddling). the engine routinely smells hot after driving 10 minutes or more.
I was driving on highway 70 into kansas city with my two young children. i noticed the vehicle smoking and pulled over onto an off ramp. i popped the hood and before i could completely open it, more smoke came billowing out. i quickly grabbed my children out of the vehicle and within 30 seconds the engine was engulfed in flames.
My vehicle is telling me my coolant is low but it is not its also telling me im due for an oil change and has been coming off and on for the past 10 months ive had it serviced numberous(8) times had my coolant flushed and sensors checked. had it serviced at the place i bought it and at airport ford. even had my motor replaced 5 months ago. this issue is keeping me from driving my vehicle because once its (hot) it will shut the vehicle down..i can get in it start it after not driving it for hrs and pull out of my driveway and it says its over-heating. and will say stop safely. and the vehicle will shut down. ive been stranded 3 times from this happening. i check the coolant and its not low or over full. i really hope nothing happens while im driving or when i have my 3 yr old daughter in the car with me. thank god its only been on my way home from work.the place were i bought the vehicle has my paperwork for the replacement of the motor. and the cost.
Check engine light on. when i start the car it shakes really bad.
We own an escape 2013, and the car overheated at 40mph. the coolant level was low despite we service and replenish its fluids levels every 3000 to 4000 miles. i called our local dealer in augusta ga and they stated they only see one door latch recall for our vehicle and since our car warranty has expired they will not fix the problem.

The engine will randomly stall and turn off displaying the red oil lamp and red battery light. this happens when the car is cold and has just turned on, and started to move.
This car showed a problem around march 2017 when it randomly stalled and did while in park at a parking lot. after that it would run fine for months at a time and then i would have the same problem of it stalling out and dying while parked or when the car was in park. i have replaced the battery 2 times in the last 2 years and something keeps frying my battery. the problem has escalated in the last 6 months to the point where the car now just dies while driving without any real warning and is unsafe to drive. i tried taking it to a ford dealership and they could not figure it out and had a hard time recreating what i had described was happening. they told me to replace the fuel pressure sensor, but it had already been replaced 2 weeks prior to it going to that dealership. they basically told me to throw money blindly at the engine to the tune of 3k to 4k or trade it in on something else. those were the options given to me by ford. the problems did not really start until after 80k miles and the car is worse once it has been running for a little while, gets worse when you run the heater and game over if the ac or defrost are on. my mpg are horrible but i dont even know for sure because i will look at the gas gauge turn the car off and when i come back from letting it sit the amount of fuel showing has gone back up considerably. also my mils to empty randomly went from the gas light turning on at 30 miles to empty to 50 miles to empty. my car acts like it has a traumatic brain injury and one moment it seems ok and the next is all over the place. we cant even drive it anymore because it is too dangerous and unpredictable.
