Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Escape

2013 ford escape sel stalling when accelerating from a stop. this has happened several times with my wife driving the car. we've taken it into the local ford dealership only to be told they cant replicate issue. driving the car to work today (my wife now drives my car for safety concerns), the escape hesitated when pulling out of the parking lot and onto the road. have another appointment to have it looked at but will probably be told that it can't be replicated. this car only has 60k miles and is totally worthless, and unsafe to drive.

While driving down the road out of no where the check engine light comes on. right after the light came on the low coolant information light came on and five seconds later the car started getting sluggish and the information light came on again saying engine temperature to hot pull over safety.

Driving my 2013 ford escape sel with only 52000 miles on it home from shopping in reno, nevada. i was in washoe valley, nv when i though the high winds were keeping my car from speeding up, when i could not accelerate i pulled to the slow lane and then onto the shoulder. i put the car in park and look at my dash to see if i was overheating or any other issues were apparent. my dash showed nothing wrong at all. no lights or warnings of any kind. the gages were all running normal. i put my car in park and within a second or two a large very black billow of smoke came up back part of the engine nearest to he drivers side window. then second later larger fire flames came right behind it that went over the top of my car. my car went up in flames in just moments. i had to jump from the burning car to safely.

Coolant light came on and after coolant was added the check engine light came on and what not go out. also every time i added fuel my vehicle would not start. each time i would add fuel it took several tries to start the engine. every other day i would not be able to start the engine for hours. i took the car in to a ford dealership for inspection i had several codes come up. a failed coolant bypass valve was replaced as well as a fuel pressure sensor. codes (p 0087) (p 018 c) (p 26 b 7) (p 1450) the restraints module control replacement and did a coolant system flush. after extensive work and over almost $2,000 spent my vehicle engine light keeps coming on and i continue to have trouble starting my vehicle after adding fuel every single time. the fuel issue really worries me because whenever i get out of my vehicle i smell gas and don't think that is normal. i really hope i can get this resolved soon because i cannot go without driving but i am loosing sleep as well as being very nervous when i have to refuel. please help me resolve this issue as soon as possible because i am starting to regret choosing a ford!!!!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 45 mph, the temperature gauge increased to high and a warning indicator illuminated regarding the engine being too hot. the contact had to remove the coolant cap in order for the gauge to return to normal and the warning indicator to clear. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the head gasket was leaking. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and could not assist. the dealer was not contacted. the failure mileage was approximately 104,918.

Takata recall my vehicle had endless issues and problems. i would drive a mile or so to gas station, turn off car, get gas and then the car wouldn't start or drive 15 miles, do a job, 30 minutes later get in and the car wouldn't start. it took several times for the vehicle to turn over and then stay running. i would throw it into gear to get the engine running and sometimes it'd be fine, other times it would bog down and stall. i got into an accident and my car was totaled. i had mechanics look at the issue and they would say the o2 sensor, wastegate solenoid or evap leak. they would nickel and dime me with all these little things. the codes were, p0234,p26b7 and p0456. they said coolant was getting into the fuel system and that was contributing to the stalling and problems. i had to see a chiropractor after my accident due to spinal pain and discomfort. however, it was worth this getting rid of this lemon once and for all. if anyone else is experiencing these problems, post the fix so that it can save someone else from financial, emotional and physical pain. i didn't let anyone drive my vehicle(wife/family) because i never knew when it would stall and where.

Car stalled four times in two days. each time the car was warmed up and was restarted then stalled on the road.ford has a recall on the non-turbo charged escape for this problem. my car is not included.my vehicle is the 1.6 liter turbo.ford dealer says computer did not indicate a trouble code. they are replacing throttle body work not complete at this time.

On four different occasions, the vehicle was being driven by accelerating from a stop. seconds after beginning to accelerate, the engine appeared to stall. all ip lights went out and engine lost power. moments after this power loss, all lights came back on and vehicle was able to be driven normally. this vehicle has had an extensive repair/recall campaign history. this was reported during a service visit and no problem was found. the problem occured three more times.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the hill start assist not available, engine service, and engine fault message warning indicators illuminated. in addition, the vehicle stalled, the rpms decreased, and the power steering failed. the driver was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with a computer glitch. the computer was reset, but the failure recurred. the dealer diagnosed that the vehicle overheated and the computer was reset again. the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer again where it was diagnosed with too many communication codes. the vehicle was not repaired and was taken to a different dealer. the diagnosis was unknown. the manufacturer was made aware of the failures. the contact was able to file a case with the manufacturer. the failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the low coolant and check engine indicators illuminated. the dealer diagnosed that the coolant was leaking into the engine. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. the failure mileage was 90,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the coolant system indicator illuminated. while driving 60 mph, the engine overheated and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was taken to advantage ford lincoln sales, inc. (885 hagerty dr., fremont, oh 43420), but was not repaired. the dealer stated that there was a leak from the coolant system that caused the levels to become too low; therefore, the vehicle overheated. the contact was advised to keep the coolant level topped off in the interim. the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to call nhtsa. the failure mileage was 83,974.

Our 1.6l escape's check engine light came on. dealer diagnosed bad oxygen sensor w/fix cost of $350 & although we had both a premium pre-paid maintenance plan & extended warranty in effect, both dealer & ford indicated this emissions repair was not covered (ford extended warr. to 75k mi due to # of recalls). we could not afford dealer cost so forced to seek alternative shop or car would fail emissions inspection. repair shop stated root cause of bad sensor was fluid dripping from directly above sensor which due to extensive buildup, appeared to be long time problem (which ford dealer never noticed in 73k miles of regular servicing??!!). this car is a total piece of crap. given 14 recalls, 89 tsbs & nearly 600 complaints, ford should be forced to buy these cars back!

While commuting in heavy traffic this morning, with times of heavy idling, an exhaust type smell starting coming into the cabin causing me to become nauseous and dizzy until windows were opened. this has happened on numerous occasions, particularly when the weather goes from cold to mild (not requiring a/c), but some heat. this vehicle was taken to a ford dealership last march for the same issue, but the problem was not diagnosed. i purchased a battery operated co2 detector to test and it alarmed while driving under these conditions. the vehicle was taken to the same ford dealer this morning and left running. the service technician did detect some type of odor coming through the vents. *tr

Two problems. 1.) remote start not working properly. it shuts itself off within 30seconds due to corrosion on negative terminal wiring to battery. unknown cause why the corrosion would occur on my battery. i take care of my car and it is in the garage when not in use. 2.) engine suddenly stopped while driving. unknown reason. told that i need to have a software upgrade done to the computer system on my car, but not told if this would fix the stalling 100%. unclear why i would need to pay for an upgrade so my engine does not stall when driving. the car should work and drive without stalling. if i need a upgrade to the computer engine software so the car will not stall then i would expect this to be covered by ford on a recall. this was very scary and dangerous to have your car suddenly stop working while driving without any prior warning. i did not get any signals that the engine was going to stop, it just stopped suddenly while driving on a city street after leaving work. *tr

Driving down road on cold snowy day. coolant arrow went from c to h in less than 5 seconds and engine shut down into safety mode meaning it would not travel over 5 mph. limped to side of road. felt engine - cold to the touch. plenty of coolant in engine and reservoir. car sat for five minutes. started car again. coolant arrow again went from c to h in less than 5 minutes. car in safety mode again. towed car to dealer. they could see the code number and "something" happened to the engine. they reset the code and car went out of safety mode. dealership cannot provide an answer, only it "must be an electrical problem". searching the web, it appears this model and year ford has been having the same problem (as described) for several years. vehicle was in motion when everything went bad. luckily we were not on the highway and was able to pull to the side of the road. i was given little notice of the safety mode. i wish had i had the code number the dealership said they reset. thank you *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 15 mph, the engine stalled without any warning. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 76,000.

A few months after buying my car it began to have cooling issues. my car is continuously overheating and needing coolant. as i am driving the low coolant light/ display will come on and then my car will slow down then stop. this has happened to while on the highway as well as the city streets. i add coolant to my car at least twice a week and this issue continues to happen. when i am parked my car is fine but as i am driving it gets really dangerous. there were times when the person behind me would have to slam on their breaks or swerve to avoid slamming into the back of me. it is a true miracle i have not been involved in an accident. i have a small child and she is terrified to be in my vehicle. i feel that there is an overall problem with the cooling system. i have talked to various people with the same car and we all experience the same issues.

As many other ford escape 2013 owners, my car stopped working properly putting my life and those of my wife and kids at risk. it started when the engin began to cut off when idle. at the begining, there were no check engine light. car will restart but a 150 m later the engine will start fighting to stay on and most of the time the engine lose the battle. so i restart again until ( after 2, or 3 times) the engine stays constantly on. my big concern was with the hazardous and risky situations i found myself in, specially while getting inro a busy road or a high way and having the engine to shut down andlet i didn't have time when the engine let me out of power. some drivers are in hurry and might not have the time to stop their vehicle before hitting me. that's why i always parked my car on the sidewalks while in distress. when i took the car to one of ford dealers, they couldn't find the issue. i took it to a private mechanic and he made me change a lot of pieces but still not fixed yet. i am going back to the dealer and hopefully they'll fix the issue. it cost me $ 2500 until now and still looking for the issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled and the instrument panel indicators illuminated. the vehicle was unable to restart and was towed to a dealer. on different occasions, the contact smelled an abnormal fuel odor coming from the ventilation. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure, but noticed that coolant was missing. the contact continued to refill the coolant in the vehicle, but it continued to deplete. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened case number: cas12347863. the failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

My car started acting up when the check engine light came on. it has run at lower speeds , sputtering and seems to have loss of power while driving in local conditions no more than 15 miles or so. i called ford where i purchased the vehicle, and they offered to tow it. at first they made it seem like everything is covered, and now its 2 weeks later after them telling me its some sort of sensor that needs to be replaced and the cost is 1100 dollars, the car is 3 years old with 30000 miles on it , they will not fix the car until payment is made. it seems that its an issue they should have to fix on there dime not mine. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled, the steering wheel locked, and the vehicle was unable to shift into neutral. the engine warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle had a gasket issue. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was towed to the dealer again where it was diagnosed that it needed coolant. the failure recurred and the vehicle was towed to the dealer again. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the issue. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving approximately 10 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. the engine stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was not repaired and the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

I have had several problems with this vehicle aside from the official recalls issued on my specific car. started losing coolant. would stall after starting and sluggish during acceleration. took to dealership were i was told i needed a new fuel pressure sensor and battery. (no mention of coolant leak until i pushed further) new parts cost me nearly $600 and i was then told that i needed a new cylinder head (that was causing coolant leak). price for new cylinder head upwards of $3000 (out of warranty by 4000 miles). i took the car from the dealership without cylinder head repair. still stalling after started and sluggish during acceleration even tho fuel pressure sensor was supposed to be the problem. a few weeks later the car started to smell like gas while i was driving. discovered a cracked fuel line spraying into engine compartment. called ford because this issue is part of a recall. they informed me that it was not for my vehicle but if they decided to include it later i would be reimbursed for the repair. lastly, i was driving the car when i heard an odd metal on metal type of noise. i stopped at a light and the car shut off. no warning lights on the dash to tell me what might be the problem. pushed the car into a parking and discovered that it had a blown head gasket and oil in the water and a different part of gas line had cracked spraying fuel into the engine compartment again. this car never once overheated so there is no reason it should have a blown head gasket. so now the car is not quite 4 years old and not drivable.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and the battery warning sensor illuminated. in addition, the contact heard an abnormal sound coming from the fuel tank. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the failure could not be duplicated. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 75,000. updated 01/12/2017*lj consumer stated while driving they hear a loud noise or humming from the right side of the car around the gas tank traveling at speeds between 45 to 60 mph and when they come to a stop the car stalls and the oil and battery light comes on. updated 7/10/18*jb

My fianc and i were pulling out of our driveway when the vehicle suddenly stalled and stopped completely. the vehicle was then hit by another vehicle the side airbag didn't deploy and my fianc is very lucky to be alive! it wasn't until we purchased this vehicle that we realized that this particular vehicle has had so many recalls. there also has been so many official stalling complaints that an investigation had beeen necessary! since the accident, the stalling issue has not improved but worsens and is now stalling everytime we put gas into the vehicle. it stalls and won't start again. he was driving on a major highway; upon exiting the highway the vehicle stalled and shut completely off at the highway exit ramp luckily he was able to pull the vehicle off on the shoulder or he would have been involved in yet another accident and potentially killed! ford really needs to address this problem! these vehicles have been well maintained and from what i have read most are having this same issue from the beginning of owning the vehicle. when my fianc was injured in the first stalling accident we weren't the owners of the vehicle, my aunt was allowing us to borrow her vehicle and she recently sold it to us; now that we own the vehicle we realize that the accident could have been prevented and should have! also i understand the side airbag not deploying is another recall issue that hasn't been addressed with our suv!

***no accident*** ford dealer diagnosis found codes p2036 and p26b7 as map sensor and pefr wire and engine coolant bypass valve. the ford dealer stated that this vehicle vin#[xxx] is not under recall and wants over $1100.00 to repair . the nhtsa campaign number 15v813000 covers this vehicle's diagnosis made by ford and should be recalled also under ford's recall number 14s17-s1. i've called ford motor corp. a second time 11/16/16 and was given case #11069892 and then transferred over to the dealer who again stated this vehicle is not covered under the recall. in the condition that this vehicle is at present i am seeking repairs under nhtsa campaign # 15v813000. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that coolant leaked all over the engine and the low coolant indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to place motor, inc (800-649-5785, located at 19 thompson rd, webster, ma 01570) where it was determined that there was no recall for the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving 75 mph, the vehicle violently jerked and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. while at a complete stop, the vehicle stalled, but was able to restart on the first attempt. the dealer diagnosed that the fourth cylinder was faulty and the engine needed to be taken apart for a complete diagnostic. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was invalid. the failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

While driving down the road about 50mph, the car lost all power and it actually felt as if the someone had depressed the brakes. since i had not hit the brakes the car behind me did not see any brake lights and almost rammed me. the engine light came on briefly at some point but i can't remember exactly when. my car then stalled. i was able to drift to the side out of the way. i tried starting and it would not start. after about 15 minutes it did start up and drove perfectly fine. this has happened to me 3 times over the past couple of months. i searched recalls and found recall 14s17 and notified ford. they said it doesn't cover my vin. why doesn't it? this is the problem i am having and it looks like many other people are experiencing the same issue. this has the potential to cause an accident, hurt someone or even cause death! my car was manufactured in nov 2012 and the recall states that it covers jan 2012 to april 2013 but not my vehicle. why???

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while driving, the vehicle suddenly shut off and a warning message indicating that the engine overheated displayed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the water heater was faulty and fluid was leaking. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 60,150.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the vehicle experienced premature engine failure that caused the motor to fail twice. the dealer (plattsburgh ford, 320 cornelia st, plattsburgh, ny 12901, (518) 561-5030) diagnosed that an unknown oem part within the motor needed to be replaced. in addition, the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v643000 (latches/locks/linkages), but the same dealer confirmed that parts were unavailable. the manufacturer was notified. the failure mileage was not available. parts distribution disconnect.

I was driving and as i was approaching the red light my car stalled. i turned it off and on three times until i finally was able to move it. my main concern is safety should it stall when im driving. i have a 1.6l but it is not covered under the recall 14s17, should that be the issue. the symptoms seem to match, and the issue is extremely frustrating. *tr

I had gotten into my vehicle and after turning it on i managed to make it to my neighbors house. my vehicle for the second time started to over heat and the engine light came on and the vehicle was stating that i need to refill the coolant. i just parked it and the next day we had filled the coolant again taken it to get the error codes checked and were informed we need to get a new thermostat. when taking it to the mechanics they had tried everything from checking codes to driving my vehicle and they were unable to get the issue taken care of due to not being able to re-create the codes. they had informed me that this is a known issue with ford, however when contacting ford they have no idea what i am talking about. i checked online and see there is a recall for this, but my vin even though having the qualifying manufacturing date is not eligible. i have had my vehicle for 1 1/2 years and have had it shut down on me, not have any power, start to put and stall, refilling coolant every so often, over heat, and i can never get a straight answer from the dealership. i have called for information in regards to recalls and these issues and am transferred to a person who is not there so i can leave a voice mail. i have never had a call returned. i just want to know what i have to do to understand what is going on with my vehicle. why is my vin not eligible as well? *tr

The engine light is on in vehicle. coolant bypass valve is stated as not working. are we able to find out if the vehicle was taken in due to recall for engine coolant leaks.

I purchased my 2013 ford escape july 2015 and for the year i had it i was fairly pleased. i had heard the horror stories about these cars catching fire and was aware of the recalls. i had been to a ford dealership back in june for a tune-up and assured all recalls had been done on the vehicle, i had bought it used but ford was able to search the information from the vin, or so they said. friday september 23rd i was on my way to work, on the i-5 north fast lane, when the car had a warning light saying something about my 4wheel drive. the car began to lurch and smoke began to come up from right underneath the windshield wipers. by the time i was able to make it over to the shoulder, thankfully without causing an accident, i could see the smoke replaced with flames and all warning lights were lit on the dash. i grabbed what i could and my dog and called 911. by the time the fire department was able to get to us the car was completely engulfed in flames. although personal items, and my first car i purchased on my own, was lost my dog and i made it out alive. as the process of dealing with insurance began i have been trying to get fords attention in this matter. i am now the 14th person this has happened to. after more digging and numerous phone calls to different ford dealerships only a handful of them told me to get the car in immediately to a shop because of fire risk. i was also informed that the recalls had not been done to the vehicle, and one dealership even gave me a shop name that the recalls had supposedly been done at. i called and the shop had no records of even seeing the vehicle. i am awaiting a letter from fords legal department but this issue really needs to be put out there. i walk buy the vehicles everyday, some with baby seats in the back, and it horrifies me. **also trying to upload pictures but it's not allowing me. *tr

The same thing described in 13v583000 happened to me on the highway. ford is hiding behind the vin and says because it is out of warranty and the vin is not effected by 13v583000 that they cannot repair it. i owe 16000 on this car.

Coolant bypass valve clogged causing my vehicle to overheat and stall in the middle of the highway after turning off of a very busy intersection. managed to limp the vehicle to ford and part was replaced after two days of the dealer having it. part is under recall, but not applicable for my vin apparently told to me by ford corporate. cost of repair out of pocket was $400.

My 2013 ford escape is overheating and it cut off on me while in motion on the expressway and it wouldn't nor start .

Exactly two weeks after purchasing this used ford, i start it up to leave in the morning for work and my check engine light came on. i took it up to the shop to get looked at and the code coming on the code reader is p26b7 replace coolant bypass valve. hmm common problem in several 2013 escapes there was actually a recall on many of them except mine??

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the low coolant warning indicator illuminated. upon inspection, the contact noticed a puddle of coolant on the ground and the coolant was below the minimum line. the failure occurred five other times. the contact stated that the vehicle only experienced this failure when there was extended driving. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that a hose needed to be replaced. the specific hose was not disclosed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 12v431000 (engine and engine cooling), but the vin was not included. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

My car started leaking coolant, was using about 1 gallon a month, took to dealer 3 times before they determined it was leaking coolant around the 3rd cylinder head. motor determined to be bad. likely cracked head or bad head gasket. options were to tear down the motor, find and fix issue at $7500, or just replace motor for $5500. opting to get new motor despite car only being 4 years old.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving, the message "vehicle over heating" was displayed before the engine suddenly stalled. the contact also indicated that smoke was present coming from under the hood due to oil leaking unto the engine. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000.
