On average, the 2013 Ford Escape starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 62 432 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2013 Ford Escape

Multiple times check engine service engine fault now comes on, killing all power and steering to vehicle. stalled out in traffic, on highway, at a stop, low speed, no speed, high speed. lost all ability to accelerate or control vehicle. traction control sensor light lit up, check engine light lit up, airbag sensor lit up and yet running the check systems on it responds that all systems are normal and no active messages. previously had issue with a bad wheel sensor affecting rpm's, speed, and acceleration. it took the dealer 4 days to figure that out as no computer codes displayed. when turning the lights on manually, the sensor on the dash doesn't light up and it does not turn the lights on unless it is completely dark outside. not good for these rainy overcast mornings. the engine stalling happened in all different circumstances and traveling in inner city traffic and losing power has proven to be quite dangerous. it first happened yesterday while traveling short trip turning into parking lot. today it occurred 12 times in a span of a 25 mile trip with my granddaughter in the car. i read the ford website and ntsa ones and feel it could possibly be related to recall # 14s17 but when i run the vin number, it only shows active recall related to airbags. it has had multiple recalls since first 3 months of ownership and dealer where purchased never seems to know or have parts in order to address recall issues. the problem is that when this happens, you lose all ability to control the vehicle and there is no indication of when or where it's going to happen. we were sitting at an intersection and when the light turned green, i accelerated and it lost power and there was nowhere to get the vehicle off of the road as it was traffic all around us. i turned my hazards on and prayed we didn't get hit by the oncoming onslaught of traffic.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the engine overheating indicator illuminated and the coolant level was very low. the contact also reported a burning odor. the vehicle was pulled over, the engine was turned off, and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the origin of the coolant leak was not located. the failure recurred and the independent mechanic could not locate the leak. the contact took the vehicle to boggus ford mcallen (1400 e expressway 83, mcallen, tx 78501, (956) 686-7411) where it was determined that there were no recalls. the dealer could not replicate the failure since the coolant level was normal at the time. the failure occurred again a few weeks later. the manufacturer acknowledged the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with nhtsa. the failure mileage was 40,000. the vin was unknown.

Engine coolant service required, check engine light. checked coolant low. added coolant 4 days later the same message appears again. add more coolant. take my vehicle to dealership due to the leak. which is a recall on other 2013 ford escape but apparently not mines. i have t replace water pump, gasket, servicing belt and 1 gallon of coolant for over $1100.00 with no help from ford. when they know they should due a recall on all 2013 ford esacapes.

I was driving going 40 mph & car just died, the engine turned off almost got re ended as the car just came to a stop. i was not able to restart for a couple minutes. all the power stayed on but the engine died and the car lost momentum.

Ford chq extended the warranty on 2013 escapes due to numerous issues. during this warranty period, my emissions sensor failed, needs to be replaced & ford is refusing to repair it stating 'emissions is excluded from this warranty'. the repair cost is $375 & my car will not pass emissions inspection until it's fixed. the problem remains unresolved until/unless ford fixes it. a 3 yr old car should not have an emissions problem unless there are defective parts (in which case ford should pay to resolve). note the extended warranty letter from ford does not specify any exclusions.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while reducing speed to less than 10 mph, the engine suddenly stall. the vehicle would also stall while idling. the cause of the failure was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 90,000.

On 10-25-15, i was driving a few miles from my home when a light came on stating "high engine temperature, pull over safely." within 30 seconds of pulling over, the flames came out frm under the hood near the windshield. within 5 minutes my vehicle was fully engulfed inside and completely destroyed. i contated the dealership who informed me of a recall that oil could leak onto the engine and start a fire. i was never notified. i was given a number for ford customer relations. i notified them of what happended and was told they turned my case over to their legal counsel and i would recieve a written response from ford in 15 business days. ihave still not recieved a letter and i was told i just have to wait for the letter.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. while accelerating from a traffic light, the vehicle hesitated and stalled. the contact stated that the vehicle had to be placed in park to prevent the stalling. on several occasions, the vehicle took several attempts to restart. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the contact was referred to the dealer because the vehicle was under a manufacturer's warranty. the vehicle was not repaired. on five separate occasions, the low coolant warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. the contact was informed that the coolant level was low. the mechanic refilled the coolant reservoir, however the warning light remained illuminated. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

Driving on road and high engine temperature warning came on. pulled over at first safe area, a very short distance. shut vehicle off and in approximately 2 minutes flames were coming from under hood.

Auto loses coolant frequently without any visible leaks. have to replace/add coolant every 50 to 100 miles driven. when coolant is low, the car requires pulling over until coolant is added. i've owned the car for 3 years, it has 117,000 miles on it and this problem has recurred, expecially in the winter, every year since i've owned the car. coolant leakage seems to be worse when i use the auto starter to warm up the car before driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the vehicle overheated and an unknown warning light illuminated. the vehicle was then parked and smoke emitted from the hood. the contact and passenger were able to exit the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames. no police report was filed. the fire was extinguished by a passing motorist. no injuries were sustained. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the anti-freeze had leaked unto the engine causing the fire. the vehicle was not repaired. the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 12v431000 (engine and engine cooling). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

Driving down street when vehicle suddenly went into limp mode. vehicle has had numerous previous engine fault service readings on screen. dealer has been unable to repair. in shop again.

Coolant issues, overheating and vehicle stopping completely, this occurred several times; head gasket replaced, turbo replaced, spark plugs coming out on their own, wheel bearing and sensor gone, touch screen gone

When i was driving my vehicle on a local road in a residential area, the check engine light was on. that day, i've never driven on a freeway, or faster than 45 mph, and the problem occurs only after normally low speed driving for 15 min. i got the vehicle inspected by the dealer, and they told me the error code is p026b7, and it has something wrong with the coolant bypass valve. that part is not covered by the power train warranty. the vehicle had a recall before associated with the coolant leakage, so it is very suspicious that the coolant bypass valve is also inherently defected, considering with so may other vehicles sharing the same failure with the same engine.

While driving down the highway i pushed on the accelerator to pass another car safely. the accelerator did not react for 4 seconds, this is a serious safety issue and if our government is not looking out for us, who is. i noticed other postings like this and i have complained to ford that i have a lemon and they have chosen not to do anything about it. do i need to start writing my senator or congress person for something to happen, what does it take for someone to notice these complaints, a death from these defects? ford has chosen to ignore it and apparently the nhtsa as well. i have had several issues with my escape and have complained to ford, i am a veteran and cannot afford a lawyer as i am putting three people through college. help!!!!!!!.....updated 10-27-15 *bf

While my wife was pulling into a parking spot front forward. the engine suddenly revved and the vehicle accelerated forward, causing the vehicle to jump the curb and crash thru a store front window.

The engine stalled/died while driving. i was about to turn onto an extremely busy 6 lane road, so i am fortunate (i suppose) that it did not die while i was making my turn. i was able to coast to the side of the road and call for help. my child was in the car with me. very scary.

Over the past 2 1/2 years that we have had the vehicle, the engine will stall out when taking off from a stop. it has happened 7 times and we feel like it is unsafe to drive. we had it at the dealer we purchased from 3 times now for this concern and they cannot fix and deny there is anything wrong. the dealer said they did not care if we had a problem as they cannot find what the cause is. i am a state certified ase auto tech and i think i know what is wrong. but as i said the dealer does not care. the service writer even wrote the wrong description on the ro of what the problem is. he wrote it for a check engine light and we never said that. we told hem that is stalls at slow speeds from a stop or has happened on very low speed turns.

When starting, car shows "engine fault, service now" light. took to dealership three times, has not been resolved. recently, when braking for a stop light, engine fault reappeared and lost all power to the transmission. huge safety issue.

Driving on the freeway in traffic due to an accident on the shoulder, about 35 mph. i went to accelerate after passing the accident, i took my foot off the gas around 60 mph. the rpm's were bouncing up and down, and the car continued to accelerated. i slammed the brakes around 90 mph. the engine continued to rev as i pulled to the shoulder. a sheriff left the scene of the accident i passed after seeing what happened. the sheriff escorted me off the freeway, as my car would not go over 40 without revving the engine. i was escorted to the dealer, who stated they had not heard of this happening before. *tr

Bought a 2013 used (clean car fax) ford escape thursday april 8th, 2015. on saturday april 11th, the car engine light came on, said the engine was overheating and pull over safe. before we were able to pull over the car went from full speed to safe mode with no power to move the car. we drifted to the side of the road, without getting hit by another car (miracle). we had the escape towed to dick smith ford in raytown, mo. they flashed the pcm, and said it fixed the problem. i have had the escape back 3 weeks and it did it again same thing on the highway again on may 2nd. i was going 70mph and barely made it to the side; the back of my car was in the right lane of the highway. the escape said engine overheated pull over safe, went from 70mph to nothing in less than 5 seconds. i was dodging cars to pull over, but i had no power and could not move the car. i call for roadside and told them it was an emergency, i was going to be hit and could be killed if i did not get help right away. once again we had the escape towed to dick smith ford in raytown, were it is still to this day being looked at. they have to call tech support/engineer to find the problem. i called ford customer service monday morning may 4th. i was given a case number and was told a regional service manager would call me. it has been two days and no calls from ford. i am very upset and angry. this escape is under full factory warranty still, and it is not safe to drive. my family could of been killed in an accident because of this car. i need help dealing with ford over this issue. they need to make this public before something horrible happens. i can't temp fate for a 3rd time. *tr

We were travelling in colorado. suddenly engine started to smoke. we pulled over. had the car towed to garage. was complete engine failure.

Vehicle loses power and stalls either idling after start or within a tenth of a mile. this occurs even if the vehicle has been driven extensively then parked and restarted or from a cold start. this condition is hazardous as power has been lost entering traffic. the car must be stopped and placed in park and restarted. this occurs about every other day. ford dealership replaced splices in wiring harness per ford tsb15-0005. problem recurred. returned to ford. throttle body replaced. problem recurred; returning to ford again. *tr

Recall repair done in august 2014 for well publicized localized overheating of cylinder head issue. have had two instances of overheating since... the last incident occurred on 2/19. the vehicle went to low power mode and instructed my wife to pull over immediately and stop engine... she did.... after sitting for approx 10 minutes she restarted the engine and temperatures returned to normal however the engine light is now on and i will be taking the vehicle for repairs again on monday. i am very concerned about the reliability of this vehicle and specifically this engine option. i have no idea what damage was caused by this latest incident... i'm sure there will be some residual longevity impacts if i keep the vehicle. i predict that this engine will continue to have issues.. both incidents did occur during extreme cold (below zero) so it seems to be cooling system related... which was the basis of the original recall. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 ford escape. the contact stated that the coolant indicator kept illuminating and the vehicle stalled several times. two dealers (burdick ford, 3004 east ave, central square, ny 13036, (315) 668-7102 and romano ford, 5431 n burdick st, fayetteville, ny 13066, (315) 637-4491) were unable to replicate and diagnose the failure more than once. the failure continued to progress. the vehicle was taken to a third dealer (beach ford, 2717 virginia beach blvd, virginia beach, va 23452, (757) 486-2717) for further diagnostic testing. the manufacturer indicated that the vehicle was included in a warranty campaign, but the statute had expired; therefore, they provided no solution other than the contact repairing the vehicle. the failure mileage was not available.

Just turned on car and was pulling out of the driveway. the information light came on and said it was low on coolant. i noticed a burning type smell when i got out of the car to see how low the coolant was. this car had been recalled before for engine coolant leaks and overheating. i took my car in to get that recall fixed in may 2014 and now it's having that problem again. i don't know if something else broke or that they didn't fix it right. i didn't buy this car brand new so i could take it in like 5 times for recalls. i also checked the coolant level last week and it was at the level it should be at...so it may be a fast leak. *tr

Car has been giving us an error message "engine fault service now" since we bought the vehicle. ford has been unable to repair for the life of the vehicle. the car has no started to shut off in traffic. the incident on 12/27 i was slowing down in heavy traffic and the vehicle shut off. cars where able to avoid us and we were able get the car restarted but it is becoming a hazard to not only us but everyone on the road. two weeks prior the car shut off while we were at a red light. ford has been unable to fix and unwilling to work with us on this issue. i have seen comments on line that other people have faced similar problems with the 2013 escape. we just want the safe working car that we thought we paid for. we have tried everything and been very patient but now it is a safety hazard. *tr
