We have classified the 295 complaints from 2012 Dodge Charger about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Was driving down the road and i had put a brand new battery in and my vehicle stated that it was closing down all power to save battery. i just pulled into an auto discount store and smoke started coming out of my engine. had it towed to the chrysler dealership and was told it was my 180amp alternator. it had burnt up just like the problems they were having with the 160amp but because the 180amp was not under the recall i ended up paying $900 to chrysler to put in a new alternator. i was told by the dealership that they have been having problems with these alternators but there was nothing they could do since my car was no longer under warranty--the vehicle had only about 63k miles on it. the alternator should not have gone bad. in fact 2 more chargers came in that same day with the same problem.
We started to smell a when we pulled over the car stoped running would not start and the alternator was smoking. we were on the highway and pulled over on a parking lot.

Our car was running fine until this event. we came out of a store 2 blocks from our home and started the car. it immediately had a new whirring noise and the battery symbol came up on our dash display. we started to drive towards our home, to get our car there and out of the street. the car then displayed "switching to low power mode" on the dash display. within the first block the the car starting smoking from under the hood. we pulled into our driveway and parked. the car shut itself off and was dead. more smoke continued to come out from under the hood. we opened the hood and visualized the alternator smoking continuously. we did not attempt to do anything else with the car. the next day we had it towed to the "my mechanic" auto repair shop, our usual and trusted repair shop. after inspection of our vehicle, the mechanic told us the alternator had burned out, and in turn, burned out the battery and both had to be replaced. after the repair our charger runs fine. we have kept our alternator and battery for further inspection.
While i was driving my car towards my house. the battery light went on. on the dashboard i checked and it said "battery safe mode on". as i kept on driving the stereo went out. that's when i stopped and search the problem on the internet. it seem that alot of people had probkems with it and it was the alternator. i was still a long way from home so i kept on driving. but then the car stalled really bad and it would not go any more it was just on. i called the dealer today if the could fix it since it was a recall on the dodge charger 2012, but when i did they told me that my car did not have the recall and that i had to pay 700 dollars plus the labor to get it fix. i just want to know why if alot of people are having the same problem why cant they fix mine.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge charger. while driving 50 mph, the battery warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. the vehicle was taken to be diagnosed. the contact was not informed of a cause for the failure. the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 52,000.
My car was running perfectly fine, then out of the blue, i received an error message which read "battery saver mode". there was absolutely nothing wrong with my battery. after maybe two minutes, all the electrical systems in my car started shutting down. maybe a minute later, my car was completely disabled in the middle of a busy intersection. all power to the vehicle was dead, so i couldn't even turn on the hazard lights to warn other drivers. the cabin began to smell very strongly of an electrical fire. i got out of the vehicle and opened the hood. there wasn't a visible fire, but there was smoke. i had the vehicle towed to the chrysler dealership, where they informed me my vin wasn't covered under the p60 recall. i spoke with chrysler customer assistance, and they informed me that my alternator assembly wasn't deemed as defective. i had the exact same problem of all the vehicles under recall, but apparently not enough of my particular alternator assemblies have been reported defective to warrant a recall for my vin. i would've been in big trouble if this happened with my children in the car. i had little to no warning off what was going to happen. chrysler knows this is an issue, but they refuse to acknowledge it to avoid paying for the recalls. i would be extremely grateful to have this problem investigated. please contact me for any additional information you may need. thank you. *tr
The radio turned off, every light on the instrument cluster lit up, wipers turned on automatically, lost both power break and power steering. all this at over 50 mph with our young son in the back seat....eventually my wife was able to get the vehicle stopped, but even after many attempts was unable to put the car in park. eventually the car just completely died. she was stuck in the middle of a turning lane and wasn't even able to turn on the emergency flashers. the car ended up being towed to the nearest chrysler dealership and diagnosed with a faulty alternator to the tune of almost $900. financial burden aside, this was a very frightening experience for my wife and son, and although the car has been repaired neither my wife nor i feel entirely comfortable driving the car by ourselves much less having our young son in the back seat.

I have a 2012 dodge charger with 60,000 miles on it yesterday the alternator had a catastrophic failure while my wife was driving the car on a state highway. the vehicle shut down while she was in the roadway but she was able to pull to the roadside because she was on a down hill slope. when we tried to jump start the vehicle it started smoking the jumper cables. our car has the 180 amp alternator i see where there is a already a recall on the 160 amp alternators for this vehicle i think there may be a problem with the 180 amp alternators too because the problem sounds the same.

While driving vehicle the battery saver mode illuminated on the electronic vehicle information center (or evic) alerting me that the charging system was in battery protection mode. when i arrived home i disconnected the battery to prevent total discharge of battery overnight and not be able to move vehicle from garage. when attempting to reconnect the battery i attempted to restart vehicle which was successful and there was no more indication that vehicle was in battery saver mode and has not re-appeared in the several days since. after personal research i discovered that this is a common failure in modes equipped with 3.6 l engine equipped models and fca llc has issued recall # p60 but has not issued one for 5.7 l engine equipped models that are exhibiting the same failure problems at approximately the same rate and age. vehicle was taken to local dodge dealership in yuma, az for takata airbag and wheel jack recall on july 12, 2016 and notified service personnel of the battery saver mode condition and requested charging system diagnosis. currently chrysler has closed the investigation by issuing a recall on 3.6 l alternator problems but has not or will not issue a recall for 5.7 l equipped vehicles even though fca llc knows this is an ongoing problem. all previous recalls have been completed or are in progress.

I had he exact same alternator failure as described by the dodge charger p60 recall. i was on the highway going about 60mph when my radio and front panel flickered, then cut off for a few seconds before coming back on. my traction control and abs lights stayed on. about a minute later, i lost power and my car completely stalled. i was able to drift to the center lane before coming to a complete stop. this was frightening because it was dark outside, it's a poorly lit road and of course i had no electricity to turn on my hazard lights. with no way to pop the trunk, i had to crawl into it via the back seat to grab flares (luckily i had some-most people don't). i was almost struck by several cars during this time. alas, the tow truck came and i was taken to a safe location. the average quote from mechanics in the dc area is about $800. the dealership wants $970. the 180amp alternator should be recalled just as the 160amp alternator. its defective and its a safety risk.

180 amp alternator had same problem as the recalled 160 amp alternator (p60 recall). alternator failed, only warning was a message that said "battery saver mode". drove to a dodge dealer and service could not explain what the message meant and scheduled an appointment for 4 days later. all power failed the same day i talked to dealer within 10 miles and 15 minutes later. i had just pulled over while on a freeway because the car was emitting a burnet electrical smell and i was turning around to return to the dealer when power failed.
I started driving my vehicle and after a few minutes noticed a quiet "whirring" noise from the engine compartment. shortly after a red battery indicator light turned on, followed by a "battery saver mode" message. i headed for a local auto parts store to get a new battery. while driving electrical systems started turning off; sound system, bluetooth, and possibly others. a few minutes later other indicator lights came on like my abs, traction control, and power steering. i arrived at the store and tried to shift into reverse to back into a parking spot. transmission went into neutral and refused to engage reverse. more indicator lights came on. nothing i did could get the car into gear. i attempted to turn the car off and was greeted with a message something like, "car must be in park to turn off". i attempted to put the car into park and failed. i engaged the emergency brake and went inside to explain why my car was stopped in the middle of the parking lot. once i returned to the car the led screen in the console started flickering white and black and i saw some lights change on the shifter. it claimed it was in park but the car rolled after disengaging the e-brake. i was able to turn the car off but not engage park. auto part store employee tested battery and suggested that battery and alternator were dead. we tried their jump unit but could not start the car. employee drove his truck over and managed to jump start the car. after removing jumper cables the engine started sputtering and turned off in less than two minutes. while waiting for the tow truck i did research and found out that my year make and model alternator had been recalled, but not my alternator because it was 180amp (instead of the recalled 160amp). dealership mechanic confirmed dead alternator which killed battery.
The alternator is prone to failing while driving. mechanic stated that there is a recall on 6 cylinder motors but not on my v8. as we were driving the electrical system started to shut down, smoke came through the vents. turns out the alternator failed and was very costly to replace. it was brought to my attention this has happened to many chargers both v8 and v6, and also chrysler 300 which use the same part. please look into this.

While stationary abs and traction control sensor came on accompanied by sound in engine compartment and plastic melt smell. restarted car, battery light came on, sound and smell persisted. dealership diagnosed alternator melted. part on back order, possibly 10 days to repair. car repair not covered, nor rental.
Takata recall on saturday february 27 my car radio began to turn off and on the display screen it said battery saver mode. i assumed my battery needed to charge but later that night it started and within minutes it did it again but the auto shops were closed. i was unable to take it the next day and today monday february 29 as i drove to work my radio turned off again. after work i decided to drive to the auto zone to get the battery checked. as i drove my screen began turning off and on, my a/c kept turning up and down but blowing hot air, as if the heater was on, and the display screen where it shows speed turned white and started blinking on and off, all the indexes on the dash went crazy and maybe two minutes later my car shut off while driving and i struggled to turn as the steering locked. i was lucky to be near the auto zone already and away from traffic. my son was with me it was a horrible experience. they were able to check it and it was the alternator. my headlight on the passenger side is out as well. i have heard of recalls with all these parts but apparently mine is not on the list. same problems. this really needs to be addressed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge charger. while driving at approximately 10 mph, there was an abnormal noise coming from the front of the vehicle and the battery reserve warning indicator illuminated continuously. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or diagnosed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 40,000. updated 04/22/16*lj *tr
Takara recall i was coming home from work and my car shut the radio off and slowly started shutting off other accessories to the car. i work 30 miles from my house. when i got home, the car would not shut off, would not go into park. and everything was going hay wire. i had to put the parking break on so i would move, because i couldn't get it to go into park. thank goodness my window was down because i couldn't unlock the car. i had to crawl through the the back seat to pull the emergancy lever to open the trunk. after that i disconnected the battery.i soon found out the battery died and the alternator burnt up. i have replace the battery and the alternator and started the car. it runs but all the electronics are still inoperable.
While driving, the vehicle started making a whining noise. soon after, we smelled an odor of burning rubber. within 10 minutes, a vehicle warning light appeared indicating the charging system was malfunctioning. about 5 minutes later, the battery save mode light came on, we lost abs and esc, and the car seemed to have lost power. had to replace alternator and battery. out of pocket cost $1100. have not received my p60 recall notice as of yet. identical problems listed as a part of recall p60
Alternator began running hot and started burning through the casing. car smelled like burnt plastic. also, the heat slightly melted the nearby radiator, which caused a leak and it needing to be replaced as well. this sounds exactly the same as the alternator recall on other dodge charger models in the 2012 year...but mine is the v8 engine and i was told the recall did not apply.
While driving, the vehicle started making a whining noise. soon after, we smelled an odor of burning rubber. within 10 minutes, a vehicle warning light appeared indicating the charging system was malfunctioning. about 5 minutes later, the battery save mode light came on, we lost abs and esc, and the car seemed to have lost power. we were close to a dodge dealer so we had the car looked at. dealer had to replace the alternator. i asked about a recall or service bulletin and the service agent said there wasn't anything on the car. this car was in otherwise perfect condition, all services performed on time, with under 61000 miles.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge charger. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle jerked, the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel lights, and the vehicle stalled. the contact stated that the failures were identical to those listed in nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system), but the vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the struts needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 61,000. the vin was not provided.
My 2012 dodge charger sxt has approximately 81,000 miles. i have never had any problems with it, maintenance have always been done on time. i was pulling into a parking lot when i started hearing a noise from the hood. i turned off the car and restarted it, the noise was still there and became louder. then smoke started coming out of the hood. i turned off the car and waited for the smoke to subside, which was about 40 minutes. then i opened the hood and and the smell of burnt was very strong. the car would not start after that. we had it towed to our mechanic and he confirmed the alternator had caught fire. he could not fix anything because the electrical components in the car where acting up and he does not know the system. he advised us about the alternator recall p60 and so i called chrysler and they were adamant that my car does not have any recalls for the alternator. however all symptoms of this recall p60 were present in my car. we took it to firestone and they referred us to the dealer because they confirmed the computer was also damaged and they said that only the dealer could help with that. i called the dealer as well and they said, there is no warranty on the alternator, computer or any of the components the other mechanics have confirmed failed in the car. chrysler will not acknowledge that the vehicle has the same alternator issue under recall p60 and now we are left with an extremely expensive repair, car rental. i would appreciate any assistance in getting chrysler to take responsibility for selling a car with a defective alternator. my vehicle is relatively new and i was not counting on having to pay for such a hefty repair to a new car.
While driving on the highway my vehicle completely shut off. alternator was determined to be dead and needed to be replaced. this is the exact problem that the dodge charger recall p60 covered but this recall did not include the larger engines???? makes no sense!!!! it was unsafe for those drivers and i should not be treated any different. i had to get off the highway without power by coasting into the middle turning lane since the car is completely electric and i had no power while cars were driving around me at 60 mph. it cost me over 600 to have a new alternator installed.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge charger. the contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the engine stalled with an unknown warning. the vehicle failed to restart. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the technician informed that small sparks of flames ignited from the alternator. the technician extinguished the flames. the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 57,197.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 dodge charger. while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle lost power steering ability and the battery save mode message illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact had to maneuver into a parking lot and had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the 180 amps alternator failed and needed replacement. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the 180 amps alternator was not under a recall, only the 160 amps. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 80,918.
I was driving down the highway when the 'battery saver mode' indicator came on and i pressed the ok button on my steering wheel. i drove home and parked the car. the next day upon starting my car the indicator did not appear when starting the auto. as i left my house driving in neighborhood i noticed my cars touchscreen wasn't working, then i heard a whining sound so i began to slow my car down. the service transmission light appeared on my dash and within seconds the car stalled without the ability to steer or brake, the car came to rest in the middle of the street dead. the entire electrical system was not present. i called a tow truck and had my car towed to tomball dodge. upon inspection by tomball dodge serviceman the diagnosis was alternator shorted thus putting the car in the a stalled state. i inquired with the serviceman about a recall notice he indicated there was none for my car however upon doing some research i found recall p60 p60 states: chrysler group llc (chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 chrysler 300, dodge charger, challenger, and durango; and 2012-2014 jeep grand cherokee vehicles manufactured april 22, 2010, to january 2, 2014, and equipped with a 3.6l engine and a 160 amp alternator. in the affected vehicles, the alternator may suddenly fail. if the alternator fails, the vehicle may stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. when i contacted chrysler they stated that my car was not under that recall because i had a different order number then what was listed on the recall. however, i was having almost identical problems as what was described in the recall notice.
Radio stopped working, all lights on dash went on, battery safety mode symbol lit up, the next thing that happened was car went completely dead. could not get car out of park had to be towed. vehicle was stationary at time of failure. battery was charged car started but only ran till battery died, no charging by alternator. same issues for many other 2012 dodge chargers
