Problems with 2006 Dodge Charger FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2006 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 89 530 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2006 Dodge Charger

After filling the fuel tank and pulling into traffic the car stalls which is very dangerous considering cars approaching or following you could crash into you . this happens each time i fuel up.

On feb 25th i put gas in my vehicle, later that day i noticed a high gasoline scent from my car. ie; 10 days prior i had my vehicle serviced at my local arrigo dodge dealership. i waited until the next to see if the smell had gone away, assuming i had put bad gas in my car. the next day before i could open my car doors i could smell the gasoline from standing outside my car. still assuming i had bad gas i decided to drive out as much of the gas as possible. when i realized the smell would not go away, i went online and did some research, which lead to this being a common problem with the dodge vehicles, i watched multiple videos and read multiple comments. on feb 27th i followed some steps from videos. i took my back seat out lifted the guard and pulled of the fuel pump cover, and low and behold there was gas. this is a fire hazard. i drive my mother and my daughter in my car, anything could have happened. i called dodge customer service on feb 28th to report the problem to see if there was a recall, seeing that i was not the only one with this issue and complaint. dodge was not much help. this problem that dodge ignores has cost me emotional distress and more money than i expect to spend to fix. dodge shows no interest or care in this case as this being a hazard. i am completely disappointed in the way dodge is dealing with this issue. the representative that i spoke with did not give me any for of ease or comfort or offer any assistance on how this can be fixed. while it may seem like an easy fix to that rep, this problem goes beyond just fixing. its a fire hazard and dodge needs to look further into this. maybe when something drastic happens on this account i guess that when it may matter to this company. i my self have taken multiple pictures and videos.

The last time i filled up my car, it kept stalling and i would lose power steering and brakes while in traffic with my children in car. not very safe feeling. scared i was going to get hit with family in car. it would start up but it would keep stalling until i ran a few gallons out of it. i filled it up again today and noticed a sucking noise coming from gas tank. it started up then stalled as i took off. so i pulled over and kept starting it up every time it stalled. after about an hour of not stalling i drove home and parked in garage. it would stall going straight and turning.

Major safety issue. after refueling, my vehicle stalls anywhere from 1-6 times at random times. it happens at highway speeds, and city driving. there is a total loss of power (brakes and steering included) had a very close call of causing an accident due to this issue. this issue is supposedly covered by extended lifetime warranty but my vin is not "eligible" for some reason. in order to fix the issue, the gas tank has to be replaced $1500+ expense. very disappointed that dodge abandon my here. even though im experiencing the issue, im not eligible because my vin range missed the lifetime warranty.

After filling fuel tank the vehicle would sputter and stall at stop light. although it would restart it continues this pattern of stalling at streetlights or coming to a stop.

Engine stalls several times immediately after filling gas tank. this is very dangerous because you loose steering and power brakes in traffic. the dodge dealer says that it does this because there is gasoline in the vapor canister. i believe this is because something in the fuel tank is causing fuel to get into the canister where it does not belong. changing the canister is not going to solve the problem. i am afraid to drive the car and i'm afraid to buy another dodge or chrysler.

My car completely shut off on me as i was driving it. this happened to me on 01/13/17 as i was leaving the gas station (after refueling). i was merging onto the freeway at the time, which turned out to be a blessing as i was able to merge into a safe location on the highway. after reading about similar cases online, i found this to be a recurring issue in the 06 chargers / chrysler models. this is definitely a major safety concern. why has there not been a recall yet ?? *tr

My 2006 dodge charger completely died on me while driving at 40 mph. luckily i was alone on a city road but lost all control and felt i was barley braking and steering was near impossible. i was able turn everything off in the car and restart but it happened 3 other times within 2 miles. at one point while turning left on a highway it died; i was almost to a point to hitting other cars turning left in same direction and others behind me. i was able to drive 4 miles today without incident however after researching this exact issue among other charger owners i searched for a recall and nothing has been said by dodge. this issue doesn't seem to be from personal actions but a flaw in a system on this make/model. it has happened to me twice before a few years ago however i read something about a gas cap and felt it was isolated. after last night and reading blogs today i see that this is a wide spread issue and not caused by not maintaining a vehicle or bad driving. this is an issue in design or manufacturing. had this happened in any other driving setting during rush hour someone could be seriously injured or killed. i notified dodge and reported the issue but they said i would not be contacted and to keep receipts if something was wrong in case they do recall something. why hasn't this been corrected after all these reports for the same issue to this many of the same vehicles? this has been happening since i reported it in jan of 2017 on safercar.gov. no action or contact has been made.

After filling up at a gas station, the car will stall out randomly at all speeds of travel. this is a huge safety issue that has sht down the car while merging onto freeway in front of semi-trucks only to have power steering and propulsion stop. luckily truck was paying attention and honked and swerved around, while i rode off onto the shoulder. then it restarted, ran for another minute and stalled again while trying to get back off the shoulder. i ended up letting it idle for 5 min before being able to merge successfully and get home. online i have seen many people saying they have same or similar issues with their 2006 dodge vehicles as well. please help to get this resolved as this could have very well killed someone.

2006 dodge charger has a known issue involving vehicle stalling if the gas tank is filled. dodge negotiated a lifetime warranty for repair of this defect in lieu of a recall. i was not notified of this warranty. my fuel pump has failed due to chronically running hot due to inability to fill the gas tank. the fuel pump design depends on the cooler temperature of the gasoline in the tank to keep it cooled. in other words, not being able to keep adequate gas tank levels has directly led to fuel pump overheating and failure. dodge will not cover the cost of fuel pump repair but will replace the fuel tank that caused the damage. the vehicle was in motion leaving the parking lot at. *tr

After filling up gas tank, vehicle will rapidly lose rpms and stall when stopped at lights or stop signs. i then put the vehicle in park and am able to restart it, but it will stall again while moving right after. this causes a loss of power steering which has almost caused me to crash multiple times. i only bought the car 12 days ago and it has done this multiple times. i have read the multiple other complaints, and have tried to fix the problem by replacing the pcm, but that did not work. others have suggested replacing the gas tank because the stall could be caused by the vapor recovery system failing following refueling. i believe this issue is related to nhtsa action pe13016. the vehicle in its current condition is unsafe to drive as it will stall while moving and lose power steering. the problem first occurred on 11/7/16, and occurred again on 11/15/16, both times after i refueled. it will not occur if the gas is below 3/4 full. i replaced the pcm on 11/10/16, but that did not fix the problem.

Charger is stalling frequently. after filling up with gas. stalled and went into some safe mode where it wouldn't go into second gear. stalled on the highway, side roads and while making a turn. while making the turn it stalled in the middle of the intersection while a truck was coming at us. i had my son in the car and we were stranded in the road. we could have been killed!! i have read up on this and it seams to be a faulty sensor at the gas tank fill up. why has this not been addressed? sounds like you are waiting for someone to get killed before doing anything. great company!!!

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving various speeds, the valve inside of the fuel tank allowed raw fuel to enter into the fuel lines, which caused the vehicle to stall without warning. the dealer (mclnerney's woodhaven chrysler, dodge, jeep located at 23940 allen rd, woodhaven, michigan, 48183) stated that the failure was under recall; however, the vehicle was not included. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 23,000.

My 2006 dodge charger rt stalls intermittently while i'm turning a corner on a city street or stopped at a red light. when it stalls, i do not have power steering. this is extremely dangerous because i could get hit. sometimes it stalls more often after i fill up with gas. i do not overfill. i have been filing my gas tank the same way for 10 years and until october of 2016 it has never been a problem.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that the fuel tank could only be partially filled due to a leak. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 120,000.

Gas tank extended lifetime warranty. my car stalls after refilling gas tank.it dies at idle.it dies when moving! it is very dangerious situation!!

After filling my vehicle my car will stall and random intervals. simply drive away from the gas station and the vehicle would stall so i'd start it and then continue to drive. this largely happened while i'm stationary so i wasn't very concerned until i had it stall while i was turning on to a street and almost got side swiped by an on coming car. this is extremely dangerous and should be dealt with by the company as they have acknowledged it as an issue and i have seen multiple people file complaints about this issue and nothing is being done. this in my opinion is more dangerous than the sir bag issue my vehicle has already had a recall for. chrysler and dodge has acknowledge the issue and stated it's a valve i can't recall the name of the specific part and having to replace the gas tank.

Car randomly stalls, sometimes while stationary and sometimes while driving. very dangerous.

Fuel system issue pertaining to lack of fuel to engine. there have been multiple occasions where the vehicle had hard starting and stalling, now the vehicle won't start. after investigating common issues (i.e., air, fuel, spark) it was determined that fuel was not traveling to the fuel rail at the engine. the fuel pump was replaced and the issue persisted. currently the vehicle in non-operational due to the lack of fuel. i fell this issue is very similar to the nhtsa pe13016 investigation where the determination was to replace the fuel tank as the integrated multifunction control valve (mfcv) was found to be defective. the manufacturer offered a lifetime warranty for the issue, however it was stated that the vehicles included in the extended warranty were equipped with the 5.7l and 6.1l 8-cylider engines. we find this inaccurate as our vehicle is equipped with the 3.5l 6-cylinder and is suspect to have the identical issues as stated in the all of the investigative documents for pe13016.

After filling up gas tank drove off from gas station car stalled started car right back up drove some more and it stalled again started car right back up drove and once again car stalled this time i was in the middle of traffic very scary it almost caused me to get hit by other drivers , went online to see if anyone else has had this problem and found many other owners with the same issue with the exact same scenario, car is well maintained and runs great other then this issue

Pulled in to gas station because my gas light came on with my wife and 3 of my children, one being only 1 year old, and a trunk full of fresh meats and fish from the market on a hot ga day 45 miles from home, put in $30 worth of gas which almost filled it up, went to start my car and it started jerking, clicking and shaking real bad before it just died. as scary as it was that this was happening i tried to start again and got the same result. with this kind of load and a baby on a hot day, broke and no other way home, i tried a few more times until it stopped turning over and just made a click sound, 1 click. a tire shop guy across the street seen i needed help, due to the baby now hungry and crying, came over to see if he could help. after trying to start again he said may be my battery, alternator or starter so he went to the parts store and got an h7 loaner battery. once installed tried starting and again it started jerking, clicking and shaking real bad before dying. another guy walked over to help, again due to the baby crying, and said that sounds like your fuel pump and said "i heard of people having problems with this when filling up with gas and they(dealership) have to replace your gas tank for free". i had to pay well over $100 for a tow truck and had to pay a complete stranger to follow me home with my family because there was no room in the tow truck for them. i've never had issues like this with my car but now as i'm researching for diy resolutions i'm finding that there are others who have had similar issues. this needs to be fixed immediately. i'm now out of money. i have 5 children and am the only one in my house working and this is my only means of transportation that i am still paying a note on. by the way, tried to start my car again and its still doing the same effing thing. chrysler needs to do something fast!!!

I went and filled my gas tank and drove away from store about 200 feet and car completely shut off while driving had to pay 100 dollars to get towed only 2miles away from local repair shop

Filled tank up with gas day before this happened. driving down road at 25 mph the car stalled. it would restart and stall again.

After refilling my tank with gas, my car suddenly began to stall. immediately after refilling, i started my car and within a few seconds it shut off. after many attempts of starting it and remaining stationary, my car finally remained on for more than 5 minutes and i assumed it was safe to begin driving. 5 minutes into driving on a city street the car began to jerk and stalled in the middle of the street, fortunately it didn't cause an accident. i was able to restart it and turn into the nearest shopping center where i contacted chrystler, who claimed they had no knowledge of this issue. i've seen a multitude of complaints with similar, if not the same, issues i continue to experience.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. when the contact filled the fuel tank using the automatic shut off, the vehicle would stall or shut off with the oil warning light illuminated. the vehicle was able to restart. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. the failure continued to occur intermittently. the approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

After refueling vehicle, engine stalled while making left hand turn in front of oncoming traffic, leaving me stuck in middle of intersection. engine will stall coming to a stop, accelerating from a stop, turning corners, and a couple times while just driving down the road. when you restart motor, transmission will not reengage right away. doesn't seem to happen if you keep fuel level below 14 gallons. dodge dealership has said it might be a valve on top of fuel tank. been happening for a while but seems to be getting worse.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving 60 mph, the engine would shut off. the eas code indicator illuminated prior to the failure. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who found a manufacturer recall pertaining to the fuel tank. the contact did not receive a recall notification. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist since the vehicle was too old. the contact also stated that the vehicle stalled after fuel was added to the fuel tank. the vehicle was taken to village dodge, inc. (819 ny-66, hudson, ny 12534, (518) 828-1585) and the failure was repaired. the stalling failure had not been resolved. an independent mechanic diagnosed that the vehicle's computer system misread that there was no fuel in the tank. as a result, all the electrical components shut off. the failure mileage was 54,000.

After filling the gas tank up car stalls within minutes on busy highway interstate and it fluids out where you are stuck in traffic i've had plenty of mechanics to look at the far and they cant detect the problem i need some assistance with this issue are i'm gonna end up causing a bad wreck with the issue of my car please contact me [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. after filling the vehicle with fuel, it stalled without warning. the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired the failure continued intermittently. the manufacturer was notified. the vin was unknown. the approximate failure mileage was 179,000.

After fuel up, car stalls. this is very unsafe as i was turning in front of on-coming traffic and car stalls and car just stops. was able to have cars avoid hitting me and eventually started car again - only to have it stall once again. car only has 30,000 miles on it for a 10 year car - this is a limited edition daytona. very unhappy to find out about the number of complaints and dodge hasn't done anything to remedy this 'manufacturer failure'! seriously considering selling this vehicle and swearing off all dodge makes in the future.......have been a loyal dodge consumer since the 70's!

Car stalls after getting gas. has stalled while on the highway at 60mph, and has also stalled in the middle of an intersection almost causing an accident. hard to control and no power steering when it stalls.

Vehicle turn off and stalls when driving 55mph. turn off at intersections and vehicle is hard to control when vehicle turns off.

Car stalls when slowing down or stopped, but not all the time, it's very erratic. on occasion it cuts out for a second while driving along at 50 mph.

When trying to fuel the car, the pump continually clicks off like the tank is full. will also spit fuel back out while pumping (no matter how slow you try to pump). i don't see how this isn't a safety issue.

Engine stalls (shuts off) after refueling. major safety concern while in an intersection. this happens after refueling (not topping off).

Our problem still has not been fixed. the car continues to "die in flight." i have uploaded a video to youtube. https://youtu.be/ssawxdfdswa this occurred while attempting to merge onto the interstate. the rpms jump up and down. the oil light and the electronic throttle control light flash and ding. the check engine light came on. this is going to cause an accident and the dealership says there is nothing wrong with the car.

After filling up with gas, the car stalls/dies 2-4 times. restarts right up but this is a safety issue because it has died in heavy traffic, turning onto other streets in traffic and pulling out of parking lots into traffic. severe safety issue!

I was in the middle of an intersection, turning left, and my vehicle just turns off. very unsafe for a car to turn off in the middle of driving. luckily this didn't cause an accident. 2 other instances, i was turning out onto a busy street, pulling out of the gas station after filling up. it makes me nervous to put gas in the car and wondering when the car will die out. the shutting down of the vehicle happens after everytime i put gas into it. its not an issue of overfilling the tank because i,ve been filling up a vehicle gas tank for over 20 years and have never had an issue. even if i don't fill it up completely, this occurs. i have heard from many other people having the same issue with the same year chargers. others who have had this same issue have said its the vapor purge valve on top of the gas tank.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact found a recall related to the fuel tank. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the fuel tank was replaced; however, the vehicle began to slow down to approximately 35 mph when reaching high speeds. additionally, the rpms would continue to increase without the acceleration matching the rpm increase. the contact informed the manufacturer who opened a case on the contact's behalf and informed the contact that there was no recall relating to the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

Vehicle stalls for no reason while in motion on the highway. this appears to happen every time after topping vehicle up with fuel.

After fiilling the gas tank of the 2006 dodge charger r/t the charger has stalled numerous times after leaving the gas station. the charger would restart. this is a vehicle safety issue. the 2006 dodge charger r/t has also stalled out on highway on ramps a couple of times. the charger would restart but the cars behind were not very happy. this is also traffic safety problem.

After filling my gas tank my car stalled on the freeway. the next time i filled my tank my car stalled twice while driving on side streets. i have been told it is the vapor purge valve. i can only fill my tank partially or i stall. this is very dangerous.

I have complained on this vehicle multiple times now. it continues to have a randomly stalling engine while driving. the dealership claims it is not the gas tank. it has finally started causing the check engine light to come on (yay! it might actually get fixed). just kidding! the dealership states that the codes that show up are general pcm codes that mean nothing. from online research, it appears it may be an electrical issue with the pcm, ecm, or numerous other parts. either way, most of us go without cars for weeks while mechanics cannot find the actual cause thus cannot fix a dangerous vehicle. most of us don't want to drive vehicles that stall while going 40 mph.

When vehicle is filled to a full tank of gasoline, the car then stalls during short distances. the stalling occurs randomly and in the middle of traffic, this poses a serious safety risk to myself and any occupants in my car along with other drivers around me. i have read multiple reports of this being a common problem with 2006 dodge charger r/t's. i am not overfilling the vehicle, but i need this problem reserved as soon as possible before i am involved in an accident that is not my fault and due to my car stalling from a full tank of gas.

Car shuts off after filling tank. happens everytime i fill up. mechanic says it has to do with the check valve.

At 105000 miles i noticed this for the first time in september 2015 after filling it the car repeatedly stalled while in traffic, at a stop light and while going around a turn at slow speeds. once the tank was around 3/4 full i noticed it stopping. it restarted, but caused me to stop in traffic and wait a second to put in n or p to restart and then back into gear. this is a real safety hazard and surprised it hasn't elevated to a recall. i thought it was bad fuel - the first time this happened, 2 fill ups later it still occurred leaving no check engine light for me to trouble shoot. that lead me to the internet and i found investigation pe 13-016 which sounds exactly what my issue is. i called the dealer to set up an appointment to get the recalled airbag fixed. i asked them to remedy this concurrently but they acted real stupid on the phone - i wanted to make sure the parts were on hand to fix it at this time. i hope they honor the extended warranty as i am the only owner and don't remember getting the letter sent to me on this matter. i am curious from this repair what they will not cover and if they will overcharge for other items that "they find". i am not exactly sure what they are covering under this extended warranty?

After fueling, leaving station, turn corner car stalls. starts back up drive a little bit stalls again, trying to put into gear wouldn't shift, finally got it home. had the same problem about 2yr ago, took it in he cleaned something in the engine, bill was $400 something, now happening again

I got my fuel tank replaced under warranty (new fuel tank & o-ring part #s: cnstx531aa and cnstx532aa) and now stalling is worse than before. engine wants to stall anywhere from 0-30 mph now whether the tank is full, half empty or near empty. the car's stalling can be prevented by providing quick acceleration, which will temporary fix the issue, only to have it come back later. the choice between stalling at high speeds and losing power steering & other necessities, or quickly accelerating to prevent a stall, leave drivers with two unsafe, dangerous choices each. the fuel tank recall did not remedy the issue. if anything, it made it worse, more dangerous, and made a minor defect/annoyance into a serious problem that can not be "burnt off" like the excess gas in the previous fuel tank. dealerships give us the run around. saying they either don't have the piece, or they refuse to replace it because we already have the new, yet still faulty, fuel tank. it's becoming a serious issue with no real remedy in sight. the dealership blames chrysler/dodge and chrysler/dodge blames the dealership. the two point fingers and scapegoat each other, leaving the customer to either replace everything out-of-pocket or drive a seriously impaired and dangerous vehicle. i went in to the dealership with two minor dtc codes that i planned on repairing (they were nonimmediate and not serious) and left the dealership with 15 codes. chrysler even gave me a "case manager" for this, but the case manager said all they can do is rely on the dealership's diagnostics... literally just a waste of time. why even assign a case manager? i took the car in to replace the fuel tank since it was under warranty (aka free)... i'm a college student with no finances for repair. now, i'm left with a faulty, unsafe, nearly inoperable vehicle with no other means of transportation. someone needs to step in.

I filled my gas tank (but did not top it off with fuel) and left the gas station at the first intersection. the car stalled while braking, the car came back on, accelerated against brakes, died again and wouldn't turn over afterward. had to turn the car all the way off and back on to restart the car, only to have it do it three more times on the way home. it feels like a serious accident waiting to happen. i read up on the issue and found that it's very common. dodge needs to fix this problem. we paid for a vehicle to safely transport us -- this is not safe.

After fueling the car, it stalls out when i leave the gas station. it has stalled while stopped at a light, during a turn through an intersection and while driving down the highway at speed. after stalling, it starts back up and either stalls again or starts to do a hard stutter/bucking.
