Problems with 2006 Dodge Charger FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2006 Dodge Charger starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 89 530 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2006 Dodge Charger

I have a 2006 dodge charger. it stalled 3 times on me, twice on the road and once in the drive way. i called dodge and they said it should run if the gas tank is no full. i told them it was on 3/4 tank. i set up an appointment for july 7, 2014 and my husband went in. they ordered the part, it's called the fuel tank multifunction control valve. one week later dodge of elk grove called and they were cancelling everyone's appointment's. i been without a car sense may 30, 2014. i've been contacting dodge of elk grove and have been told that they can not get the part. i contacted chrysler customer assistance center and was told that the dealers are getting 1 part every 14 days. i am afraid to drive the car because it might cause an accident that i don't want to be in control of or a part of. *tr

I filled up with gas, pulled out of the gas station onto the expressway on ramp and the engine died. i rolled to the shoulder and after about 10 minutes it would finally start. it stalled a few more times then finally it would run long enough to get me home. *tr

My car stalls out and turns off at a light or driving after filling the fuel tank. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger rt. the contact received a manufacturer's recall on the fuel/propulsion system however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. the contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. the manufacturer was made aware of the issue. the contact had not experienced a failure.

I have a 2006 dodge charge rt with 130000 miles. the problem is that it stalls when driving with no warning, loosing al power including power steering. this is getting very dangerous for my family.

I have had an issue with my car stalling and it seems there are many others with the same issue. the fact that this is not being looked at as a safety concern is beyond me. just because you don't reach 90mph when it stalls does not mean accidents will not occur. if i am turning into a street and traffic is coming in my direction and i stall should i just "restart" my vehicle in hopes that someone doesn't t-bone me? sounds like a bad plot to the start of a movie. just do the right thing here and fix this world wide issue and let us move on with our muscular cars! *tr

After refueling, the car stalls at speed. this pretty much now happens after every fill up. the car always restarts, but usually happens 2-4 times after initially refueling. the danger is, it sometimes happens at speed, the car quickly decelerates in traffic making it dangerous. many times we have had to pull off the road in traffic to restart. *tr

Every time i fill up the car dies for about 5-10 miles every time i come to a stop. it looks like the roll over valve is faulty in the tank. i have heard rumors that this is an extended warranty period item. is that correct? *tt

It is hard starting and will stall anywhere between 0 to 45 mph. when it starts rough it will not go forward or reverse without stalling. it seems to be worse after filling the gas tank. when the car stalls it does so with no warning and can leave you with no power steering or brakes. it did it off and on at first but now does almost every time i run it. i took it to a dodge dealer and gave him a copy of the lifetime warranty gas tank problem and told him of the symptoms of the car. he ignored me and did 4 flashes on the car plus $110 of "cleanup" work on the car and told me it was fixed. on the way home it stalled in the middle of the highway while my wife was driving and she had no steering. the dealer paperwork said they pulled up 4 codes on the car's computer, which i got none of when i ran my code reader on it before taking it to them. one of the reported codes does not even show on the chart and another one was a "c" code for a chasse problem. upon getting the car home, after stalling several times on the way home, i called the bank and stopped the payment for the work they say they did. i have another appointment with the dealer i bought the car from (farther away) but how do i get them to do the repair i want, not what they feel like doing? thanks. *tr

Since 4-7-14 thru 7-16-14 the dealership has replaced two fuel tanks ( according to extended lifetime coverage letter dated may 8,2014), o2 sensor, transmission module, spark plugs, ignition coils and disconnected the remote starter. the car continues to stall and shutoff. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that chrysler's extended warranty was received for nhtsa action number: pe13016 (fuel system, gasoline ) and stated that the part was not available. the contact stated that he experienced the failure on multiple occasions. the dealer was uncertain of when the part was to become available and was unable to repair the vehicle under the recall remedy. the manufacturer was notified of the issue and stated that the part would not be available for approximately another 5-6 months. the approximate failure mileage was 107,000.

Filled up gas tank, and after leaving the gas station and turning on to exit ramp the car stalled out, and i lost control of the steering. after a few attempts to restart the car started, but stalled multiple times until the fuel level dropped to about 3/4 full. i experienced this same problem a few days later after filling up again. i did some research online and found numerous charger owners experiencing the same issue. i stooped filling up and only fill to about 3/4 full and i haven't experienced the issue again. today i came across a report on the warranty extension concerning this issue (pe13-016). i called chrysler and was told my vehicle was not included in the warranty extension. i am highly upset and annoyed by this total lack of regard for human life! *tt

Pe13-016, this issue applies to my charger r/t and anytime i fill up my gas tank the car will stall at any speed. i've had this happen at any speed from the low speeds mentioned to as high as 45 when i was accelerating and i had sloshed the gas tank. anyway, i have talked with multiple dodge dealerships and they have all told me that they have no idea what i'm talking about and that they have nothing in their system that would show them my car was affected. i feel that this is crazy and needs to be corrected. i have a car that will kill itself after any fillup and i can't get the manufacturer to own up to what they promised. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that immediately after refueling the vehicle it stalled without any warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000. the current mileage was 82,000.

After filling the car with gas (full tank), and leaving the station, the car shuts completely off. *tr

I have a 2006 dodge charger srt-8, after a fill-up at the gas station today as i proceeded out of the gas station i noticed my car started to sputter as i was coming across a bridge. as i came off the bridge my car started to sputter even more and finally as i stopped at a red light the car just stalled. i re cranked the car not sure of what was going on and proceeded down to my military installation gate entrance. as i approach the gate guard the car just stalls again right in the middle of morning traffic. this was very dangerous especially having a stalled car at the entrance of a military base. i recranked the car again and proceeded to work and as i was going to park the car it just shut off in the parking lot. this seems to be a safety related problems and deserves a true investigation. this problem seems to be unpredictable so i will not drive the car with my children in it anymore; i do not feel like the car is safe. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle, which was taken to an independent mechanic. the mechanic replaced the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the plugs for the power control module, and changed the fuel pump relay. the failure recurred after the repairs were performed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 97,000.

Within blocks of leaving a fuel station and filling with fuel the vehicle stumbled then the engine died while traveling 35 mph on a city stream in the rain. car was difficult to stop because of no power steering or power brakes. *tr

Every time i fill up the gas tank the car it stalls and shuts off. this causes lost of steering and may start immediately after or take a few tries. i've had my son with me in the car when this happens and i am afraid that we might be rear ended or it may shut off and have no steering at a crucial turn or in a busy intersection. i saw that this website closed the investigation because dodge (allegedly) was sending owners letters to fix the problem with an extended warranty starting in jan. 2014. it is april 2014 and the problem is not listed in the dodge website. dealerships are not aware either. i just talked to dodge and my car does not fall under this extended warranty. they basically told me they were not responsible if anything happens because of the problem. i hope they are not waiting on a fatality to actually do something about it. dodge needs to be proactive and not reactive. i see complaint after complaint here about the same problem. something needs to be done. *tr

While sitting at the traffic light it cuts off. while driving, the vehicle cuts off. this has been going on since 2014. i have taken it to darcars hillcrest hgts and new carrollton but nothing has been done and they have yet to tell me what the problem is

Immediately after fueling vehicle to regular capacity and automatic shutoff - no "topping off". left the filling station and the car stalled several times, each time in a precarious position such as decelerating to make a turn or coming to a stop at a light. car dies losing power steering and breaks. thought this might be bad gas but it has since repeated every time the car is refueled. this is becoming a serious safely concern as the condition is common during the first 50 or so miles of driving after a fill up. upon speaking with the dealer they blamed the issue on the end user overfilling the tank. as the only user of the vehicle it is never overfilled nor topped off.

When fueling the vehicle the gas pump clicks off as if its full and i have to squeeze the pump handle again it puts out about 1/2 gallon at a time, i spend almost 30 minutes to fill my tank, when i called the dealer they knew exactly what i was talking about, and told me to be careful cause it can spit the gas back at you. i have a 2006 dodge charger sxt with 78,000 miles. this should be a recall cause, cause a lot of people was having this problem. its caused by the fuel filler neck as per dealer

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger . the contact stated that after refueling, the vehicle suddenly stalled. the contact indicated that the defect occurred multiple times after refueling. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. the failure mileage was 130,000.

I have a 2006 dodge charger r/t with a 5.7 hemi. on several occasions, the engine has stalled when i was stopped at a stoplight. the car was in drive and stopped with my foot on the brake. after putting in into park, it would take several tries to get the engine started again. it also stalled once while coasting into my driveway. i was traveling at less than 5 mph with my foot on the brake. again it was hard to restart. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger xt. the contact stated that the engine would stall sporadically after the vehicle was refueled. the contact inquired about a technical service bulletin (tsb) under nhtsa action number: pe13016 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the extended warranty only covered the vehicle for up to 100,000 miles and the contact had exceeded the mileage. the vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

After fueling my vehicle, i was traveling at approximately 20 mph around a corner and the vehicle stalled and died. once the engine died, i was unable to steer and had to hard break to avoid going into the other lane of traffic and narrowly avoided missing the oncoming vehicle in the other lane. once i was stopped i attempted to restart the vehicle, it continued to stall three more times when i attempted to put the vehicle in drive. i was stuck in the middle of the road, on a corner with little visibility. i was finally able to restart the vehicle on the fourth attempt. i was able to drive a couple miles till i stopped at a traffic light. the vehicle stalled and died again right as the light turned green. i again had to restart the vehicle three times before it would stay running. there were multiple vehicles behind me at the light, thankfully they had come to a stop before i stalled. this has happened in the past, but it is getting worse and i no longer feel it is safe to drive. i have taken it to the dealer and was informed that there is a known issue with the fuel system. the cost for this repair is over $2,000 and there is no manufacturers recall at this point. it is my opinion that this is not a wear item, it is a manufacturing defect. this is my family car, and i do not feel safe driving with my children as there is a great risk to their safety. *tr

Fueled the car, car stalled several times while driving. happens each time car is fueled. i have tried fueling slowly, and fueling small amounts, nothing works. car will stall 2-3 times either while sitting or while driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph immediately after refueling, the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the oil warning lamp. the failure was recurring whenever the vehicle was refueled. the vehicle was taken to a independent mechanic, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

Shortly after filling up the gas tank the car stalled repeatedly when stopping. *tr

Car stalls while driving right after fuel fill up. *tr

My 2006 dodge charger stalls after i fill up the gas tank. the check oil light will come on and the car shuts off. this happens after i come to a stop after the fill-up. eventually it stops stalling. *tr

1st incident: on october 4, 2013, my car stalled coming to a stop at a red light less than an 1/8th of a mile after leaving a gas station after a fill up. after 3 attempts to start engine, it started up. 1/2 a mile away, the engine dies at the next red light stop. 3-4 attempts to start car, it started. car ran rough/sputtered on my way to my house 1.5 miles away. 2nd incident: on january 10, 2014, my car stalled coming to a stop at a red light 1 mile away from a gas station after filling up. after 4 attempts to start car, the engine fired up. car ran rough/sputtered for next 2-3 miles. *tr

I have had this issue happen about five times. after filling up my car with gas (i do not overfill), i notice that my car will all of the sudden turn off. this has happened in the middle of an intersection and on the highway. i feel very anxious and scared when i drive now because of this issue. after discovering online that many other 2006 dodge chargers have experienced the same issue, i am hoping there is an honest solution out there. chrysler/dodge have not responded to any of my correspondence, with the exception of an automated response. from here on out, i will be forced to only fill my car with half a tank of gas. please advise if any other information/description is needed. hope to see some action soon. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car stalls out after filling up the tank. it also is dying and cranking back up at 40 mph and a couple of times on the freeway doing 80 mph. also just sitting at a red light with a half of tank of gas and car just dies. have to put it in park to restart it. *tr

Car died in intersection. happened twice. it stalls, chokes and dies then has problems restarting takes about 3-4 tries then restarts. very dangerous and accident causing. *tr

After fueling up my 2006 dodge charger rt the car will repeatedly stall. this is obviously a very dangerous situation. this happens every time i fill the car with gas.

Filled up fuel tank and let the nozzle click. left the gas station, stopped at a light, car stalled. no indicator lights appeared. restarted easily, and i was driving through the intersection, and at about 15mph, car stalled again and restarted quickly. i pulled off the road, sat for awhile with the car running with no further stalling. contacted a mechanic, and was informed that a valve in the evap canister located within the gas tank will get stuck, allowing raw fuel to enter the system, giving a false reading to the ecm, indicating the car is running too rich, and will adjust, causing the car to stall. had to replace the fuel tank(as the evap valve is integrated within the tank), and have had no further problems since. seems to be a serious safety concern, since there is no indication that car is about to stall and no way to determine that you need to move to safety, especially if you were entering traffic onto a fast moving freeway. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 dodge charger. the contact stated while driving at low speeds, the engine stalled without warning. there were numerous attempts before the engine would restart and then the vehicle would resume normally. the failure recurred only after refueling. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 105,000.

So my car began to stall after filling it up with gas. most of the time it stalled while stopped. a few times while in motion. since the car dies i have lost power steering. *tr

I refueled the gas tank with high octane gas, and while driving the short distance home, the engine stalled three times. this made braking difficult and scary, as i was in traffic. each time it started back up, but left me very afraid of wrecking from possibly not being able to stop the car. the same problem occurred after refueling on 9/13/13 and 11/16/13 and 1/31/14. i reported the first incident that occurred on 4/28/13 on a separate complaint form (xref odi #10562746. as of this date (2/3/14) the mileage is 27,670. the low mileage is because i alternated between three vehicles. *tr

On 5 or 6 occasions, when gas tank is full, my charger stalls. on one occasion, it restarted easily only to stall again seconds later. another occasion, stalled, restart, stalled, restart, stalled, restart. another occasion, stalled and took several attempts to restart. has stalled from sitting and idling , 10mph and 30 mph. once it stalled as i was coming to stop at signal light and narrowly avoided rear ending car in front of me because was difficult to apply brake. *tr

Most times, after refueling the car will stall while driving. it does not matter if the tank is empty or half full prior to refueling. the stalling will happen within the first 10 minutes after refueling. it does not happen any other time during vehilcle operation. the car has stalled while driving on highway, at intersections and during normal operation with no warning and potentially could have been very hazardous. i am aware of the situation and now wait for at least 10 minutes after refueling before leaving the gas station. *tr

This has happened at least three times now. twice for sure leaving a gas station the first time i was approaching a stop sign leaving the gas station and it stalled out. most recently i was leaving the gas station and had made it out on the road at about 35 mph when the veh stalled. i made it to the shoulder and shut it down. i was able to get it started again. it died again about 150 ft later. luckily this was right in front of my mechanics shop. he looked at it today and told me i need a new fuel tank because raw fuel is getting pushed up through the vapor valve. i now see i'm not the only person with this issue. clearly it's a problem with the valve. *tr

I purchased this 2006 dodge charger r/t from a dealership in woodland, ca immediately after leaving the lot i drove approx. 20 miles on my way home the car started stalling while i was driving on the freeway, i will be driving along and it will suddenly jerk and lose all power for a split second (if someone was riding my bumper it would have been an accident for sure) as it lost power the rpm gauge went all the way down and jumped back up as if the car died completely and restarted itself, it chimed even as if i had just started the car. i have researched this issue online and see its a very common problem to no avail. i took my car to the dealership in my hometown and they could not find the problem, said it was spark plugs etc i ended up spending $550 and its still stalling sometimes up to 15-20 times a day its very dangerous unfortunately the car is out of warranty and i cant afford to keep dishing money out to dodge. i seriously believe this is a common issue with dodge and chrysler vehicles as i've seen online very many people having this same problem but there's no solution as far as i can find! im kinda scared to drive the car like this but its my only means of transportation so this needs to be looked into!! its dangerous! *tr

After refueling my 2006 dodge charger, the car stalled while traveling out of the gas station and the speed was appoximately 20 mph. this has happened several times and only after the tank has been filled to capacity. from what i have read online this is a fuel overflow sensor on the top of the fuel tank that is causing this. *tr

I had just filled my car with (93 octane fuel) after putting the car back on the road ,as it is my summer vehicle. i never fill past first click. i started it and it started idling rough 200-300 rpms and it quit. i started the vehicle and had to give it some gas to get it to go again which it did, chalked it up to coincidence. i pulled out of the gas station and was making a left hand turn across traffic and no sooner did i pull out than did it stall, narrowly missed being hit by a large truck, put in neutral and it restarted. however it did not run very well it was what i call bucking and surging as i drove down the road the car was almost unresponsive as far as throttle control about 15- 30 mph. as i left the city the car stalled again i rolled to the right side of the roadand popped it into neutral,it restarted and idled normal again. i was now entering the highway to go home and made it home approximately 15 miles away. the car seemed fine again. i have long had a stalling issue with the car every since i purchased in january of 2012. i have take care of this car to the utmoststandard while in my possession. this car is immaculate and is not a clunker. i have also experienced the stalling issue when making tight turns at parking lot speed mostly to the left. the issue lies in the fuel tank itself there is a valve on top that fails and lets raw gasoline into the emissions vapor system. this should not be happening! chrysler nationwide is going through 43 of these tanks on average a week. this tells me there is a large issue. to add insult to injury the tank is not cheap or simple or easy to install with an average bill of 1200 -1800 dollars depending on how many components are damaged as a result of the raw fuel entering a closed system.there are many chrysler tsbs concerning this condition,i believe they underestimate the severity of this condition. *tr

After filling up the gas tank the car stalled out while driving. its been happening for a long time now. this only accrues after filling up only. *tr

I filled my gas tank to full and it hesitates to start and also shut off on me once. *tr

Vehicle stalled again today (october 19th, 2013) with no warning while making a left-hand turn at a major intersection. filled up earlier today with no top off. has happened multiple times prior since (may 2013). dealer can not diagnose. normally happens after fuel fill up. after complaining multiple times to the dealer, replaced all spark plugs and performed a transmission flush and re flashed the pcm at my expense, despite having warranty coverage through 2015 120k miles because they could not repeat the problem on a 5 minute test drive. the vehicle stalled again two days later. after more visits no solution has been met and this car is extremely unsafe. *tr

While waiting at stop lights, car idles fine. the moment the light turns green and i release the brake to step on the gas pedal the car stalls. this has happened up to 4 times in one day. happened only once today 3/6/2014.
