Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering warning light intermittently illuminated and the vehicle loss power steering. the manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. the failure and current mileages were 63,000.

Chevy cobalt 2005 traction control light would come on for no apparent reason starting summer of 2009. on friday, september 2009 i was 5 blocks away from home...heard "bing bing bing", lost power steering, abs made the car buck, and traction light came on. i drove the car 4 blocks to my mechanic who advised me to get the car towed to a chevy dealer which i did. hawthorne chevrolet said they couldn't find the problem. on the internet if you type cobalt 2005 defects multiple reports of the same problem are being reported to gm. gm denies a problem and will not cover the repair. i am frightened to drive this car as you get no warning of failure. *tr

I've had my car for about 3 years now, been very delicate and have taken good care of it. today i left my apartment and as i drove down the highway, the car started to jerk and spasm as i drove, as if it was having problems changing gears. the power steering light came on the dashboard readout screen. i pulled over, turned off the car and turned it back on, but the problem continued. i've read hundreds of claims from others online who are suffering from problem steering problems with the same car. why hasn't this been recalled? it's dangerous, potentially deadly, and expensive to fix. i'm a college student just trying to make ends meet already, where am i going to get the money for this? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving between 15-25 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel, and then the vehicle lost power steering. he was able to safely restart the vehicle to resume normal operation. the failure and current mileages were 60,039.

For the past 2-3 months my 2005 chevy cobalt loses it's power steering going over a small bump in the road (an uneven surface). if the car is restarted the power steering comes back until the next bump in the road. i've taken my complaint to chevrolet and all they have done is told me to make an appointment with their mechanic. i've noticed that there are several chevy cobalt owners that are experiencing the same problem as me. i was also told that the whole power steering mechanism needed to be replaced for the problem to go away. i have also been told by mechanic friends of mine that, given time, the whole power steering could seize on me and i would have no way to avoid an accident. i have been pulled over by local pd because they thought i was drunk because i couldn't stay in my lane on a turn. i can't afford to be drunk because i'm a bus driver and i would get fired if i ever was drunk. *tr

Leaking power steering motor. many recorded failures of chevy cobalt power steering motor. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 25 mph the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel and there was a loss of power steering. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the electronic control module was being repaired at an expense of $1100.00. he was in the process of notifying the manufacturer. the vehicle identification was unavailable. the failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage 74,020. updated 10/29/09. *lj updated 10/29/09.*jb

The power steering has been going out on my 2005 chevy cobalt. at first it only happened every couple of weeks and now it is doing it every day. *tr

The power steering just stopped working one day while i was driving. it now happens every time i drive aprox. 5-30 sec. after i start moving. *tr

I have s 2005 cobalt and when i was exiting on the highway, the steering wheel got very hard to turn and almost hit the curb. it was a u-turn exit, i looked at the dash and it stated "power steering" without any warning. i had my 2 year older daughter and my wife was in the car who is pregnant. my wife is normally who drives this car, i have no doubt in my mind that if she was in the car driving, she would have been in a serious car accident. i think this is a really serious problem that needs to be fix before someone seriously gets injured. *tr

The electric power steering unit of my daughters 2005 chevy cobalt turns on and off without warning. this causes near loss of control as speed. if it were to happen in a turn it could be catastrophic. this is a safety recall issue but chevy has yet to issue a recall. numerous complaints are on the web. the dealer will charge to diagnose the issue and then advise that the vehicle needs to have the steering column replaced. *tr

I own a 2005 chevy cobalt and as i was driving it began to act almost like it was going to stall out on me as in driving on a major highway! my power steering is shot and needs to replaced i haven't had it that long got in aug 2008! *tr

Electronic power steering fails without notice. must restart car to reset. needs the electronic power steering motor replaced. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 35 mph, the power steering warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. there was a loss of power steering which could have increased the risk of crash. the vehicle has not been inspected, nor repaired for the failure. the failure and current mileages were 64000.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt coupe and the power steering keeps going out. i see this as a major safety issue. if i have no power steering, how am able to swerve to avoid collisions, objects in the road, deer, etc.? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. she stated that while driving at speeds of 40 mph over a railroad track, the vehicle stalled without warning. within a few seconds, the power steering warning light illuminated and flashed across the instrument panel. she was able to restart the vehicle moments later and took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer replaced the power steering column due to electrical failures. the repairs were covered by her factory warranty. the repairs did not correct the failure and the problem persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they replaced the power steering column a second time. the failure occurred again and the power steering column was replaced a third time. she also stated that most of the electrical components on the vehicle had failed; upon opening the driver's door, the horn would blow. the power locks would not operate, the electrical trunk release would not operate and the catalytic converter also failed. the catalytic converter was replaced under warranty. there were no additional power steering failures after the third repair, however the steering wheel would feel hard at times. there were no recalls for any of the failures. the failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 79,000.

The past few days when driving my 2005 cobalt the power steering goes completely out and i lose control of the car. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt's power steering goes out at random times and cannot be tested unless the power steering indicator is on, however in order to drive to a service station the car must be restarted which resets the computer and it cannot be tested. i have nearly lost control of my vehicle numerous times especially while driving in inclement weather. i have had occasions where i have had to restart the car as many at 15 times in one trip while at other times it may not happen for as many as 4 days. *tr

Problem started out of the blue. traction control light comes on, power steering goes out, transmission shifts hard, clicking noise in gear shifter, gauges for speed and rpms bounce around, lights for e-brake and abs flash, and check engine light comes on. this can occur at any time. sometimes it is as soon as you start the car. other times it is while i am driving. can not predict when it is coming. surprisingly i have not got injured driving. i have learned to muscle the car when the steering goes out. i am afraid to drive my car but have no choice sometimes. it is the only car my family fits into. i feel i am putting us all at risk every time we get in it. i have taken it in several times, the first couple times they couldn't find anything. i got it to the dealer when the problem was happening. the only thing they could find was to replace a recalled transmission valve. it did nothing for the problem. it still happens when ever and stops pretty much the same. you do have to turn the car off. it can take one time or several times turning the car on and off. no one can seem to give me any answers. i really feel this problem needs to be solved. i bought the car in 2005. first incident in fall of 2007. replaced valve in spring of 2009. *tr

I received a call from gm telling me that my 2005 chevy cobalt isn't and may never be on the recall list. my car has been having serious issues with the power steering going out frequently and i can't drive it safely anymore. the steering is too difficult to maneuver and i'm afraid to drive it even to take my grandchildren to see their doctors. i pleaded with a representative of gm and he kept telling me that there was nothing he could do about it. i already have a case number but i fear that nothing will ever get done to resolve the issue! i would appreciate anything you can do to makes this right! *tr

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt and assumed when my power steering went out while driving between home and school it was simply because i had bought it used... it cost over 1,000 to have it repaired... luckily it totally went inoperative not far from school and i made it safely. *tr

Electric power steering goes out while driving 2005 chevy cobalt at any speed. happens often, have been able to pull over and turn car off and restart then power steering works again for a while. very dangerous at high speeds(55mph) have seen many reported problem with same issue with this year and model.. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt has power steering failure. the car drives fine for the first mile then power steering warning will come on the car will no longer have power steering until the car is shut off and restarted. occasionally the key will be difficult to remove from the steering column once the vehicle is shut off. three time the keys were left in the car overnight due to same problem. there is also a rattle coming from the steering column at low speeds. the date i inputted is only when the power steering started to fail all other issues have been on going for the past year. *tr

I was driving along i-20 when the power steering light came on and the power steering just gave out. thank god i was able to pull to the side, turned the car off started it up, the light went out. now as soon as i turn the car on it automatically comes on and the power steering is terrible. the car is, of course, out of warranty. talked to dealer and was told they only had 1 car brought in with this problem and it was costly. *tr

I am driving down the freeway and the cars power steering would just go out. it was very difficult to make a turn at any speed. the only way to try to help the problem is to pull over, turn off the car. but that only helps out for a few minutes, then the powersteering will go out again. then the process will start over again. *tr

The chevrolet cobalt has a very apparent and common issue with the power steering motor. unlike most cars the cobalt has an electric motor which facilitates turning the steering wheel. however the electric motor will often stop working unnecessarily. this is extremely dangerous due to the fact it can occur without warning at anytime, including while turning. i have actually been in the middle of a turn on an exit ramp and had the steering go out. luckily i was able to regain control of the car with out crashing into the guard rail. please address this concern before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. there should be recall on this particular issue what the chevrolet cobalt as it is a well know problem among cobalt owners and gm. *tr

For the 3rd time my 19 yr old daughter's 2005 chevy cobalt's power steering went out. this time she was on a busy tampa highway. i see there is no fix for this. i can have it replaced for 1,500 but that new part will wear out as well. when is someone going to recall this problem? does someone have to be hurt or worse? i see complaints all over the internet on this! *tr

I was driving for less than a mile at about 45mph when the car's driver information screen read "power steering" and the wheel locked up and found it very difficult to steer. i was able to make it home safely. i turned the car off and then on again and the problem went away. i also have a newer car of the same model that had this issue and the steering column had to be replaced. i have filed a separate complaint with your office for this vehicle; the conformation number i was given is 10283738 for a 2007 chevy cobalt. i have not had my 2005 chevy cobalt repaired yet as i can not afford it and it's warranty has expired. when the 2007 was repaired the service advisor told me that it was a very common problem with the cobalts and the chevy hhr because they have electric power steering as opposed to hydraulic. i don't feel safe driving in these vehicles and i surely don't feel comfortable having my wife drive them either. *tr

2005 chevy cobalt--power steering goes out suddenly on car. *tr

My chevy cobalt 2 door coupe has a problem where the electric steering just stops working while driving and it disables the traction control system and the abs system i got it fixed which the warranty i had didn't cover for 1k and then 4 days later it happened again. i have researched this issue and found that it happens a lot with these cars and after they are fixed it keeps happening. also when this happens the motor will not idle properly and the trans slams when shifting gears. *tr

2005 chevrolet cobalt ls vehicle was very hard to steer in high traffic areas; which occurred on regular basis which led to the replacement of the electric power steering unit. very expensive unit. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet cobalt has serious loss of power steering. it happens 1-10 times a day and causes me to have almost no control over my vehicle. when this happens i cannot drive the car and must stop as near as possible to a safe spot and turn it off. i have noticed a recent investigation into this issue and want to log my complaint. *tr

Power steering went out on my 2005 chevy cobalt while driving.*tr

I have always taken great care of my 2005 chevy cobalt. i've taken it in for regularly scheduled check-ups and oil changes. within the last year i have experienced several things wrong with the car. recently it was the power steering. a warning flashed on my dashboard and my power steering automatically switched off, leaving me to manually steer the car! after almost turning into another vehicle, i stopped my car, turned it off and started again. the car has been going in and out of the power steering mode for the last 48 hours. after researching the cost to repair the issue, i am furious to see that it will cost nearly $1000-$2000! i have seen thousands of complaints about the same exact issue. when will gm decide to do something about this and put a recall on the issue?? *tr

The power steering on my 2005 chevy cobalt stopped working resulting in me not being able to steer my car safely, also at times locking in one fixed position. i called chevrolet and was told there was no recall for the power steering and so i took my car to lannon chevrolet and had the power steering fixed at my own expense costing $1090. in march chevrolet announce a voluntary recall for the 2005 chevy cobalt, but has not made the recall official and will not reimburse me. *tr

My 2005 chevy cobalt powersteering comes across my dash. steering rough and whole car jerks like the transmission is jumping out of the car. dangerous for consumer who put their faith in the american brand gm, rather than buying foreign. and gm want stand up and admit bad design and fix the problem for their consumers. as soon as we buy foreign they yell we are sending american jobs cross seas.as tax payers we bailed your company out bail us out with your defective design without costing us 2000.00. *tr

Power steering keeps going in and out. *tr

There was not any warning. the power steering message came on in the car and i loss power steering. thankfully i was at a red light, but could have been traveling at 65mph on the highway going to/from work. several complaints are out there online about the same issue. paying almost $500 to replace power steering motor; but was also told that this may or may not be the true issue, that the steering column may be the culprit..cost of $940.00 to replace!!! who has that kind of money??? *tr
