I took my vehicle in to vw of chattanooga in august to get the airbag recall taken care of and now my surprise my "clock spring" is now not working. i called vw of chattanooga and described that the controls on the steering wheel was not working, there is a clicking sound when turning the wheel and discussed my safety concerns. i mentioned to vw of chattanooga that i was concerned that the airbag will just blow up and he said it just will not deploy in the event of an emergency. so i'm like now what do i do, i have a vehicle i cannot drive and the last ones to mess with it was them! they asked if the airbag light came on why didn't i bring back in? i said because i have been on military orders for awhile. they also said initially it was covered under warranty and now they are saying it will cost $732 to get it fixed! i called vw care and they just said my car was out of warranty and it maybe a worksman issue but the dealership will have to work with you on that. not to my surprise but vw of chattanooga chose not to provide any means of solution or customer service.
Volkswagen replaced my vehicle steering wheel "clockspring" under a previous safety recall. my car has now recently suffered from a failed steering wheel "clockspring". my drivers side front airbag is now incapacitated, my horn no longer works and my steering wheel controls do not work. this occurred upon my making a full left hand turn, upon making the turn, i heard cracking sounds come from my steering wheel and all of the sudden, i got an airbag error warning light (i still do), my horn did not work (still does not) and my steering wheel controls did not work (still don't). this should be a second recall to cover this issue because the "clockspring" was formally recalled for the exact reasons that i (and apparently a lot of other auto owners) now suffer from and the supposed replaced clockspring is causing the same safety issues. volkswagen is currently not taking responsibility for installing faulty "clocksprings" or negligent auto design for this issue. a new safety recall for this should be issued
Takata inflator maybe. in 2015 my vehicle was tboned by another vehicle, to where the impact even caused my car to spin, yet no airbag was deployed, even the police at the scene were wondering why my airbags did not go off... fast forward to yrs later my car reads airbag error.
While driving my 2013 vw passat, the airbag light came on, on the dashboard and started beeping. when i pulled into my garage, i noticed that the horn no longer worked and none of the steering wheel functions work anymore. i have only 56,718 miles on the car and the vw dealer says it is not covered under a recall and i would have to pay out of pocket for the repair because my warranty deductible is $500. this is a safety issue and vw should be required to repair these airbag issues, not us, the consumer. this is not something we (the consumers) are causing, this is a vw quality issue.
My vehicle was making a ticking sound when turning, then out of nowhere a error message came up that said error airbag, and the air bag light came on. i looked up to see if it was a recall, since i bought the vehicle used, it is for the clockspring, when i used the vin search it did not so as an active recall for my vehicle.
Everything on my steering wheel stopped working( buttons, horn, etc.) passenger airbag light is on as well. does not work when the car is moving or stationary.
Takata recall air bag light is on when i started vehicle up.
Clock spring is not working after takata recall implemented. no controls on steering wheel work. horn does not work. airbag would likely not inflate. airbag light is on. this occured while the car was not moving.
Recall performed regarding airbag clock spring which involved installing a shroud over the the clock spring and less then 12 months later, the airbag clock spring failed. volkswagen is refusing to pay for the cost of the repair because they say that they have already performed the recall. the front drivers side airbag, steering wheel controls and horn are no longer working in the vehicle. there is also an airbag light illuminated with a airbag error in the informational display. this is a safety concern. the vehicle was in motion and the steering wheel was in use when the failure occurred.
My steering wheel started making a soft clicking noise when turning on 9/24/2018 vehicle has 68,000 miles on it. on 10/30 while the vehicle was in motion makin ga slight turn in the bend of a road on the highway, the airbag alert light came on and indicated there was an air bag error and the wheel command controls stopped working.
While slightly turning the steering wheel when backing out of a parking space, air bag light came. there is no communication from the steering wheel controls leaving the horn in-operational.garvey volkswagon assessed vehicle and concluded it is due to the clock spring failing internally. when temperature drops below freezing, locks will not unlatch. the door handle will not move and the doors can not be opened until the latches unfreeze.
My 2013 vw passat has 56,000 miles. i replaced at 33,000 on 12/29/2016 at a vw dealer that is no longer in business, based on their diagnostic, the clock spring and airbag harness in the steering wheel. it costed me $610. fast forward on 09/16/2018 it turns out that i have the same problem, no controls in the wheel at all and airbag light on. the only symptom was a crunch sound in the steering wheel while turning and the airbag light came on right away. a vw dealership stated that it is unusual for a clock spring to go bad that quickly, there's some cars that don't need a clock spring replacement at all and mine needs a second one already at 56,000. through a phone call volkswagen of america stated that won't stay behind the problem. i strongly feel that it's a defective/malfunction part that affects my wife's and my children's safety since they are primarily using the car. currently we're driving the car without any front airbag protection! please investigate this and have the ones who's fault it is fix the problem! thank you!
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. the contact took the vehicle to napleton volkswagen springfield (3145 s campbell ave, springfield, mo 65807, (417) 886-6000) to be repaired per an unknown recall. the repair was completed; however, the clock spring eventually failed. the same dealer repaired the vehicle again at the contact's expense and stated that the initial repair only replaced the covering for the air bags. the manufacturer refused to reimburse the contact since he had the vehicle's oil changed outside of the dealer and showed "no loyalty" to volkswagen. the failure mileage was 110,000.
Clock spring recall - volkswagen not honoring the recall for my vin #. steering wheel started to click last night upon turning while driving, and now the airbag light is out. took it into the dealership today and they said it will be a $700 repair for the clock spring. even with the airbag light out, one of the service guys told me they have dealt with a lot of these and said it was probably safe to drive. when i asked about the recall 69l2, they said my car was not covered in the recall.
Takata recall: on november 17, 2017, took 2013 vw passat to chapman volkswagen (4500 e 22nd st; 85711) to replace airbags. clock spring fail: on august 29, 2018, took 2013 vw passat back to chapman volkswagen since 'check maintenance airbag' light on, horn not working, and the dials for radio/ bluetooth not working. informed by service tech that clock spring failed so need to remove/replace and could not find recall re:clock spring based on vin. billed and paid $672.80.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. while the vehicle was in reverse, the contact heard an abnormal clicking noise coming from the steering wheel and a "driver side air bag error" message appeared. the contact called findlay volkswagen at (702) 558-6600 (located at 983 auto show dr, henderson, nv 89014) and was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired for manufacturer recall number: 239516 and an unknown nhtsa campaign. the vehicle was not repaired again. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 22,000.
We took our car in for service on 8/11/18 due to the air bag light coming on and steering wheel functions no longer working. the dealership confirmed the issue with the clockspring and stated that because our car was out of warranty that we would be responsible for repairs. we stated that this seems like an issue with defective equipment since the car is only 5 yrs old as well as a safety issue with the vehicle. we escalated the issue to the corporate customer service. the rep stated again that they would not cover the repairs because the car was past its warranty. we conducted our own research on recalls for this vehicle as there has been others (i.e. air bag and adblue heater). we located the 2015 recall on the clock spring and discussed this with vw customer service as well. they refused to acknowledge our vehicle as one of the ones affected even though we are experiencing the same issues. we are concerned with this safety issue as we are not able to use the horn, the airbag is inoperable as well.
Clock spring failure. dangerous as air bag and horn do not work.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v078000 (air bags). the vehicle was taken to prestige volkswagen of stamford (42 w broad st, stamford, ct 06902, (203) 327-2500) where it was kept for a month while they waited for the part. the vehicle was repaired, but the air bag sensor illuminated afterwards. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer to have the sensor repaired, but it illuminated again. the contact was informed that she could not get another loaner vehicle for another four weeks. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for repairs and the contact was charged over $536 for the labor for the final repairs. the manufacturer had a regional case manager call the contact and advised her to pay the dealer before they could work on her case. the regional case manager stated that she could not assist until the contact retrieved her vehicle from the dealer. the contact had not decided on what course of action to take. the failure mileage was 77,128.
My clock spring was supposedly replaced in 08/17 by a vw dealer before i bought the car from chevy. when i took my car in because air bag light was on and no steering wheel controls worked, i was informed that i had an open circuit in my clock spring and since it had already been repaired by the recall i would have to pay for it this time.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. while driving at an unknown speed, the air bag warning indicator illuminated, which was a safety concern. the contact stated that the bluetooth, radio, and horn failed to operate. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the clock spring needed to be replaced. the contact mentioned that the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags) in 2015. an unknown dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. the manufacturer was also contacted and was unable to provide further assistance. the vehicle was currently at a mechanic for repairs. the failure mileage was 103,000.
There was a recall on clockspring, and the repair was a clockspring cover that was repaired on my vehicle in march of 2016. july 2018 my clockspring had to be completely replaced costing $650. there was also an airbag recall that caused my horn to stop working, airbag light to come on, at the same exact time the clockspring stopped working. i took my vehicle to a dealership 2 days ago to have the clockspring looked at and the recall on the airbag repaired. the dealership informed me that i would have to purchase a new clockspring because only the cover was considered a recall, however obvioiusly this was not a sufficient clockspring repair.
In oct/6/2017 took my car to rudolph vw for the air bag recall, in june 29, 2018. i got the same warning lights except this time they are telling me that the problem is the clock spring, the part under nit the cup and airbag and this time i have to pay for it, a problem originated by them and now they want to collect $ 610.00 dlls. also they said that the warranty expired, 1 year or 12,000 miles, my car odometer record indicate back the 28086 in 10/6/17 and now 80,998 miles impossible to believe.
The air bag clock spring was originally replaced by recall in 2014. while driving over the weekend and making a turn i heard a noise and felt a thump in the steering wheel. the air bag light came on and i lost all controls associated with the steering wheel. refrained from driving the car called the dealer on monday 6-25-18 coulded schedule appt until wed the 27th. on the 27th deer diagnosed it as a broken clock spring.... again. said they do the repair in conjunction with takada air bag recall repair but that i would still owe $450 to repair clockspring. i protested the repair bill and said it should be covered since it was repaired previously. they said i could call vw myself and have them review the claim. the claim is pending with ve for the third day and i am without vehicle until claim is resolved. there continues to be an issue with these faulty clockspring and vw needs to make good on the previous recall repair.
My steering wheel has been making a crunching noise. while driving on the interstate, i got off at an exit to purchase food. while turning into a parking lot, one loud crunch noise happened and the drivers side airbag light came on. i also noticed that i lost all electronic functions in the steering wheel. i was very concerned since i still had an hours drive home and was unsure if the car was safe or not.
While i was home, i noticed my airbag light came on and the buttons on my steering wheel didn't work. a few days later i was driving on the highway and a car almost changed lanes on top of me. i tried to honk my horn and nothing came out. thankfully the car swerved back in it's lane because i didn't have anywhere to go. i took my car to the dealership and they told me the clock spring needed replaced. in 2016 i had my clock spring replaced as part of a recall (69l2). i've recently learned that many other people are having a similar issue with their recall-replaced clock spring. volkswagen is not acknowledging the problem with the recall work and clock spring being faulty and will only replace it if i spend over $700 for another diagnostic and repair.
While driving one day i heard a snap in the steering column and the airbag symbol illuminated. the horn does not work and each time i turn the wheel i can hear a noise coming from the column. after taking to a dealer it was determined that the clock spring has failed in the vehicle and volkswagen has refuse to replace due to placing a cover over the clock spring in january of 2016.
I have taken my vw in for the recall, scheduled a visit specifically for the recall. after i brought the vehicle in they said they did not have the parts. i was told that the parts were backordered. i have no indication from vw on how long this will take. i am military moving over seas and need this fixed before it can be shipped. i have spoken with vw 3x in the past month about this.
I have the same issue as investigation rq 17-009. my clockspring was part of a recall with previous owner having the recall completed in 2017. now the clockspring is broken once again. i contacted vw and they informed me the recall is closed and on me to fix or dealer i purchased the car through. this is a vw issue. i heard and felt the clock spring pop while making a hard turn a few days ago. lost all hand controls, horn and airbag light. this is a serious safety issue with no airbag.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. while driving approximately 15 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. the contact restarted the vehicle and was able to drive with air bag warning indicator still illuminated, which was a safety concern. in addition, the steering wheel controls and horn failed to function. the vehicle was taken to mandeville volkswagen (1700 n causeway blvd, mandeville, la 70471, 985-626-1067) where it was diagnosed that the clockspring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.

My vehicle was a part of the vehicles that had the clockspring recall. i took it to a vw dealership to have the recall fixed and exactly one year after they 'fixed' the clockspring, it ceased to work again. now the airbag warning light is on, the horn does not work, and neither do any of the steering wheel controls. vw refuses to fix the issue without a charge of upwards of $500, stating that because it is not apart of the initial recall it is not their responsibility.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. while parking the vehicle, the air bag error warning illuminated and all the electrical components turned off. as a result, the contact could not use the horn or the radio. the dealer (roseville volkswagen, 830 automall dr, roseville, ca 95661) stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 80,000.

Thw steering wheel air bags error
Airbag light remains on. took vehicle to dealership owings mills heritage vw and was informed that driver's side "curtain " air bag is what is causing it. concerns as to whether it is defective and if it will provide protection if there's an accident. i would think that this is a manufacturing issue.
I completed safety recall (15v-483 ) back to 01/2016. however, i started to hear noise from the steering wheel when making turns. i went to a nearby dealership and found out that the noise is due to the clock spring. the dealer filed a claim with volkswagen and they rejected the claim since it was a month after completing the recall action and they only provide 2 years warranty for that. i did a research online and found that many people had the same problem even after completing the recall action. i saw that an investigation (rq 17-009) has been opened back to 11/2017.
Clock spring has failed in less than a month after clock spring recall in january of 2018. steering controls are not functional, air bag error light is on, i assume driver's side airbag is currently non functional. turned the vehicle and heard a pop sound originating from the steering column, lost steering control, and air bag error immediately followed.
Airbag light came on and the steering controls are not working. dealer diagnosed as clock spring as bad and won't cover because out of warranty. there is a recall for vw passat 2010 to 2014 for clock spring related problems and airbag, but vw claims that my vin is not part of the recall. this is not right...they have a recall for my exact problem and don't want to take ownership. really looking for some guidance from nhtsa.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. when the vehicle was started, the air bag warning indicator flashed. later, while driving approximately 65 mph, the air bag warning indicator remained permanently illuminated, which was a safety concern. the vehicle was repaired by volkswagen of hartford (133 leibert road, hartford, ct 06120) per nhtsa campaign number: 16v078000 (air bags). the vehicle was not taken back to the dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and issued case number: 181188699. the approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
2013 volkswagen passat. consumer writes in regards to airbag safety recall. *ld the consumer requested to be reimbursed for the airbag repair. *js
A 2013 volkswagen passat, on january 7the airbag warning light came on and "error: airbag" warning was displayed. the horn no longer works and the buttons around the steering wheel are inoperable. the vehicle was taken to vw in findlay, oh where it was diagnosed that the takaka airbag recall was in effect for this vehicle and that recalled part was replaced. however the steering wheel makes a clicking noise when it is turned, the buttons around the steering wheel are still not working and the airbag warning light and "error:airbag" warning is still on.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. while turning the vehicle off, the contact heard a popping noise. the contact restarted the vehicle and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the contact also mentioned that the horn failed to sound when depressed. the vehicle was taken to legend volkswagen (158 merrick rd, amityville, ny 11701) where it was diagnosed that the clockspring was fractured and needed replacement. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was previously repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags) and offered no further assistance. the failure mileage was 26,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 volkswagen passat. the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v483000 (air bags). the vehicle was taken to green toyota (3901 wabash ave, springfield, il 62711, (217) 698-3100) and a protective cover was installed over the steering wheel clock spring. a few months later, the horn failed and the buttons around the steering wheel were inoperable. the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to autohaus of peoria (2322 w van winkle way, peoria, il 61615, (309) 740-7951) where it was diagnosed that the clock spring needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the recall was completed. the approximate failure mileage was 53,000.
In october 2017 i purchased a passat tdi from armstrong volkswagen in gladstone oregon. i then found out about the clock spring recall. within a month of owning the vehicle, my entire steering wheel components stopped working and the air bag light came on. while driving, my airbag light remains on, none of my steering wheel controls work, when i turn my steering wheel it almost makes a crunchy noise behind the steering wheel, and i am concerned for mine and my families safety while driving my car. i contacted the dealership and spoke with the service manager who informed me that they personally replaced the clock spring in january 2016. i asked them if they would please re-fix it, as the first fix did not work, and the clock spring was already bad again, less than 2 years later. the service manager told me that they had done what was legally required of them, and that they would not be fixing my car. i then asked to speak to the general manager, whom i left a voicemail for, to see if he could help. he has yet to call me back, two weeks later.
Takata recall
As i was driving i started to notice a rustling sound whenever i would turn the steering wheel. about 20 minutes later my dash light stating that there was an airbag error came on for the drivers side airbag. the horn and the other control buttons in the steering column ceased working as well.
Hair or other fibers may contaminate the airbag clock spring (a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the airbag powered while the steering wheel is being turned). this contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal airbag. a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal airbag will prevent the airbag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
