Problems with 2013 Volkswagen Passat FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2013 Volkswagen Passat starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 53 067 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Car frequently stalls and the picks up when accelerating from a stop.when i'm pulling out into traffic it gets very scary when you're already out in the lane and it loses power and after several seconds it picks up. this happens every day.

Issue: difficulty filling gas tank at all gas stations. fuel pump automatically shuts off when i insert the pump into the gas tank. in order to get the pump to fill the gas tank, i need to pull the pump out and keep nozzle close to the opening of the gas tank. it takes multiple attempts to get the pump to fill the tank. because i have to keep the pump close to the opening of the gas tank, on two separate occasions the gas pressure from the pump was strong which caused it to spray out of the gas tank, and all over myself. this is a hazard! note, i have taken the car to the dealership and they were unable to identify the problem.

My car is a 2013 passat purchased by me in 2014, i have always taken my car to be serviced with all required service maintenances since purchase date (services done all at volkswagen dealerships). the next service was not due. i have this all documented by the dealerships. my car has approx. 94,000 miles on it. the check engine light started to come on intermittently. today volkswagen dealer (following diagnostic testing) told me the head gasket needs to be replaced but that this is a risky repair as the primary problem is the engine. the volkswagen dealership is telling me the engine needs to be replaced. the volkswagen dealer is telling me today that this is not a usual problem with this vehicle. i called volkswagen to ask for financial assistance or buy back plan for this and was told there is nothing that can be done.

Pulling out of driveway epc light comes on. total loss of power and engine speed set to 1800rpm in "safe mode" no one knows exactly what is wrong. mechanics cannot ttell me what is wrong. dealership vw has no idea and want to start replacing items in descriminately and i don't have that kind of money to throw around and besides. the people that built the car can't figure it out. this is a huge safety issue. computer faults and shuts down the power at hiway speeds and sometimes car stalls out. this is very dangerous and happening to hundreds maybe thousands of people i'm reading online and talking with other owners.

While traveling at full speed, the diesel engine stumbled, the glow plug light illuminated, then bogged to a stop along the side of the road in traffic. towed to dealer who said all diesel components except the fuel tank including all the hoses and tubing would need to be replaced because the high pressure fuel pump failed sent metal shavings throughout the system. car has 98k miles and has not yet had any diesel fix installed as part of the diesel scandal. was going to hold onto car for a short time longer then sell back to vw. boy, what a costly mistake because the car must be running to return it. not happy with vw for this and a handful of other serious failures and illegal (and quite frankly, shockingly brazen) behaviors this company has demonstrated. my advice if you still have a tdi, don't wait, turn it in now. my advice for future vag (vw/audi/porsche) buyers, these vehicles are not well designed for reliability and are very expensive to maintain. furthermore, vag has proven itself to put profits above all else including your safety and with complying with laws. best to buy something else and let this dishonest company suffer until it realizes it must do better. if you just have to have one of the products of this dishonest company, be sure to never let the warranty expire as long as you own it because odds are you will need it over and over to cover the frequent and expensive repairs...the diesel fuel efficiency will never pay back due to the frequent repair costs.

Stalling, sputtering erratically. it sputters, bumps and may stall. when it stalls it is necessary to turn ignition completely off and start again in park.

I own a 2013 vw passat diesel which has a bad nitrogen oxide sensor at 47,300 miles. i have learned that this part is not covered under emissions warranty and many other vw car owners have experienced failures with this same sensor. with all the current existing diesel emission problems and fines, you would think that this critical sensor would be part of the emissions warranty. my local vw dealer and the vw corporation wants me to pay over $800 to fix a critical emission problem which is an ongoing issue with many vw owners. this is a defective part for which they have been fined in the past (2005). all vehicles with this defective nitrogen oxide sensor are increasing the world pollution. why is this sensor not part of a recall, not part of an extended emissions warranty, and why am i and many other owners stuck paying for defective parts? under the emissions settlement program, volkswagen has agreed to "promote zero emissions vehicle technology". so, why is there not a recall or warranty on the nitrogen oxide sensor?

Leaking fuel line.

The high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failed while the vehicle was in motion (<10 mph) on a county road, causing the engine to stop, and disabling the vehicle on the side of the road. after being towed, an inspection by the vw dealer revealed that the hpfp failure sent mental pieces throughout the fuel system, including through the fuel filter, ultimately clogging the fuel injectors and rendering the car inoperable. the engine would crank but would not turn over. the dealer noted there was no evidence of gasoline contamination in the fuel tank. this failure occurred with ~1/4 tank of diesel fuel and no other indication of why the pump failed. no indicator lights illuminated on the dash before or after the failure. this failure is not covered under warranty and has resulted in a +$5,000 owner out-of-pocket cost to get the vehicle operational again. vw has extended the warranty on the hpfp for the same vehicle make/mode for 2012 model year but this vehicle is a 2013 and thus not covered. this occurred on a 2013 vw passat tdi with ~100,800 miles.

Driving down the expressway at 70mph, when suddenly the vehicle lost power and turned off. the car stopped functioning. it was a dangerous situation. had to suddenly pulled over on a very busy highway. when the vehicle came to a stop, i tried to restart the vehicle with no success. car was towed to the dealership. i was informed that it was a failure of the high pressure fuel pump (hpfp). was told the entire fuel system would have to be replaced. approximate cost to repair: $5826.09. i know they extended the warranty on the hpfp for the 2012 passat. what about the 2013?

Reductive agent heating element and/or level sensor failed. car has less than 32,000 miles on it. the repair was covered under our certified pre-owned warranty, but i see that this seems to be a common part failure, so i want to report it.

156 miles into a 200 mile trip the vehicle lost power climbing a grade on a highway. at first it felt like the road was washboarded but after changing lanes the 'washboard' feeling remained and i thought it was a flat tire. within a few seconds of changing lanes the vehicle lost power - 60mph to 30mph in a second. i pulled off the road, vehicle was still running but had very little power to move forward. had vehicle towed to nearest vw dealership. was informed the hpfp had failed due to metal shaving in the system. pump, rails and injectors need to be replaced. vehicle has 110k miles on it. at 80k i had one of the injectors replaced at a vw dealership - car was having symptoms of power lag and intermittent 'washboard road' feeling when accelerating. was told at that time the injector 'just went bad, happens sometimes' - now i am sure the system was going bad and should have been addressed before it became catastrophic. not covered by vw, $5k repair.

Check engine light / malfunction indicator lamp came on in car. i was about 1 mile into my commute to work driving around 50mph.took to volkswagen dealer and car had p203b, reductant level sensor circuit which was a damaged ad blue sensor. mechanic and sales advisor mentioned that this part is critical and the car will shut off and not start until replaced. i was forced to fix or be left with a non-running car. sales advisor mentioned that this part has been updated and fixed by volkswagen and that the new part will not malfunction for newer cars. i'm not sure if the car would shut off in the middle of an intersection or on the interstate, but it could be a major safety hazard. i feel this part should be recalled and people who paid to have this fixed be re-reimbursed. i feel screwed to have a non-sellable diesel vehicle and then get hit with another $1175 part for a device that is supposed to clean up diesel exhaust emissions.

Cel came on, code for for failing reductant level sensor p203b implausable signal. car has 66,000 miles, cared for to the letter. vw wants over a $1000.00 to repair. this is an extreamly common failure not possible ofr the owner to induce...

On sept 14, 2016, while driving, my car began losing power, glow-plug indicator light started flashing, and then the car immediately stalled. from first sign of trouble to complete power loss was less than 60 seconds. scary stuff when your on the highway. had to be towed to the vw dealer. after i explained how the car had lost power and shut off, the service department suspected it was a high pressure pump failure. the next day, the service technician confirmed that it was a "high-pressure fuel pump failure". basically the fuel pump exploded, sending metal fragments through the entire fuel and fuel injector systems. not good news! the vw tech tested the fuel in the tank and confirmed that it was 100% diesel fuel. the vw service advisor indicated that this was a known issue with the tdi's since 2009. the vw tech indicated that the car would never run again unless the whole fuel systems is replaced, and the cost for this would be around $6,500. vw tech and vw customer service indicated this is a known issue and that they have addressed the issue with 2009 - 2012 tdi's by extending the warranty. unfortunately i have a 2013 and had no clue these pumps were failing on older models. this is a serious and very dangerous issue not to mention a costly malfunction that can and most likely will happen to other 2013 tdi owner's. i'm glad it was not my wife who was driving when the engine stalled.

While waiting for the buy-back through the class action fraud settlement, last saturday, sept. 10, 2016 my 2013 passat tdi with approximately 70k miles shuddered and lost all power. i was able to pull to the side of the road and then had it towed to the vw dealer. they have informed me that the high pressure fuel pump failed and spewed metal fragments throughout the entire fuel system. the repair cost quoted is $6581.44. it does not appear that i am the only person suffering this catastrophic failure around the 70k mile mark. in fact, even the dealer's service manager for vacaville volkswagen, jennifer pirani, stated she is aware of this as a problem with this year and model passat and she also owns a 2013 pasatt tdi with similar mileage and is trying not to drive her's so she can make it through the buy-back. it would appear this is a defective part with a serious design flaw causing excessive damage at a great repair cost.

Adblue heater element should be part of diesel recall part #561198970a with war.for emissions to 80000 miles

Adblue heater element failure was covered until july now not part of emissions or switch failure nhtsa #16v171000 90degrees should not have been on

2013 passat tdi with 51k mileage, cel went on a few days ago so i was concerned and brought it to the dealership. after diagnostics run, i was told the adblue header unit had to be replaced because i had a faulty sensor. was given estimate of $1200 to fix. was told cost will not be covered at all. after doing research, it seems vws diesel cars are all experiencing this problem, mostly after the 3/36k warranty period has passed and then not helping owners with cost of this defect. given that all these vehicles have a current buyback option due to dieselgate, i am appalled that vw is not offering any type of compensation for this apparent yet not declared defect that should really result in a full recall. i continue to hope for a positive resolution to this issue but am citing this complaint as i see numerous similar vehicles experiencing this issue and it needs broader attention than what it is getting from volkswagen.

Internal high pressure fuel pump failure. thankfully, my car was parked and idling at the time since my wife had just been on the highway. i began to hear a slight knocking sound, then a slight squeal like a belt makes, and then the car shut down. it would turn over, but would not restart. i had it towed to the local dealer and was advised that there was an internal high pressure fuel pump failure that would cost $6200 because the entire fuel system basically had to be replaced. apparently, upon research, this has been a known problem since 2009. this could be a real safety issue particularly at highway speeds or at times when acceleration is necessary. my car is three (3) years old and has 85,000 miles.

I have a 2013 vw passat tdi. the check engine light came on. the dealership stated the ad blue heater must be replaced. this will cost $1200.00. this website has been gathering data about this issue. the warranty expired only 5 months ago. this is outrageous .

On my 2013 vw passat tdi, the glow plug light started to flash when driving car on 40mph road, the vehicle lost power (went into limp mode), but was able to get the vehicle home. fault codes pulled were p0087(fuel rail / system pressure low). later diagnosed as a failed high pressure fuel pump. after some quick research, i found this was a common problem among vw common rail tdi engines. (this will be a $5000 - $7000 dealer repair)

Ad blue reductant tank failed. thus making the emissions system not work properly. part # 561-198-970-a is defective. the same failure occurred on my 2012 passat within less than a month. this is a known defect from vw. here is a link to a thread on the extent of these failures. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=438268

Fuel pump failed at 34,000 miles. check engine light now on permanently. independent state license diesel shop confirmed pump breaking down and releasing metal into the fuel system. metal from pump has destroyed fuel injectors. repairs estimated at $6.069. pump is covered by warranty, but dealer argues bad fuel caused the failure. vw dealer states they took a sample of the fuel to a lab and had it tested...while the car was in the shop for the day. dealer does not have a copy of lab report, which indicates they are lying.

Adblue heater failure. code p202b

I bought this car new from my local vw dealer. at approximately 48,300 miles - adblue system throws a code. code p205c meaning the ad blue heater is non functional. this part is connected with the emissions since it is suppose to reduce the nox emitted. i feel this is connected with the emission system and should fall under the emission warranty.

The gas pedal randomly gets stuck...reported the issue to vw...not their issue because they can't seem to duplicate the issue!!! i have only had the car for 2 months...yes it's a 2013...but it was supposed to be certified pre-owned!!! this issue occurred typically while in motion...it would just rev up on it's own, but the last time it happened while in park!

Mileage of the vehicle decreased to almost 8-10 miles per gallon, after the fix that they installed for a recall. previously i used to get 37-39 miles per gallon on my passat deisel but after this fix i am hardly getting 30 miles per gallon. the whole of me buying the diesel is to save gas. but after hearing about the scandal, i totally lost faith on vw and with the fix, i am not getting the mileage that they promised on the sticker price.

2013 passat tdi diesel lost power while driving is down a city street. once i pulled off the road engine light and service now light were on. a catastrophic failure occurred in the high pressure fuel pump . thus occurred in euless texas. vw will not cover my indecent under a warranty extension. they will cover 2012 models my car was manufactured before july 2012 but has a 2013 listing. as of 12/17 no repair scheduled due to $6,000 cost.

Takata recall.

Vehicle schedule for 40000 mile service. engine warning light came on code p2196. volkswagen did a computer update in january 2015 for 30000 mile service, 23n5 ecm software recall. oxygen sensor (front) replaced was replaced by vw when i complained it should not have failed. the emission system is in question since the oxygen sensor is running rich. this year model should be added to recall for pollution system not function correctly. this model is diesel. tdi

On or about september 1,2015 i was driving my passat and the check engine light came on. i finally managed to get an appointment at the dealership to have it diagnosed on the 5th of sept. they said it is a p202b adblue heater and repairs would be around $1500. why is this heater system going bad after only 2 and a half years? it seems like a lot of people are having this happen to their passats and the repair is way out of line for this new of a car. we bought this car new because we heard that it would last a good 300,000 miles. i want volkswagon to recall this faulty part and take care of this issue.

vehicle was taken to the dealer due to unable to fill up with diesel. pump nozzle acts as if the tank is full, using vw adapter or "angle" the nozzle results in diesel spraying out at the person operating the fuel pump. vw dealer found dirt obstructing the diesel vent tube off the filler neck, while all the factory fender lining in place. extended warrantee contract declined claim, since it is not a defective tube, but rather defective design. vent is not part of the "federal emission" and vw wants $1700 for new gas tank and $700 for labor. first occurrence of this problem was at 40k miles, at that time dealer "could not replicate the issue".

Driving on a country road with my wife and 2 young daughters, the car suddenly began misfiring and lost power. i was able to coast it to the side of the road. california highway patrol showed up shortly after and stopped to make sure we were alright. fortunately, we had a cellular signal and we were able to contact a tow service. unfortunately, the vehicle had to be towed >100miles (for $700) to the dealership. they determined that there was a failure of the high pressure fuel pump. they are sending the fuel out to a lab first to verify that i didn't put biodiesel in it; i didn't. they estimate that i will be without my vehicle for 7-14 days, depending on how badly the debris is inside the fuel line and engine. the dealership does not have a loaner, vw doesn't offer a rental and i'm on the hook for the tow service. i will be out of pocket over $1000 when all is said and done, all because of a component(s) that clearly has design flaws or quality issues. assuming, vw confirms they will pay for the repair...which i'm still waiting on. ...updated 09/22/15 *bf updated 3/23/2016*js updated 11/15/2017*cn

On november 19th at approximately 4:30 pm, as i was pulling into my garage, the car just accelerated uncontrollably and crashed into my husbands work bench which was against a concrete wall. damaging front of car, windshield, workbench, steel storage cabinet, etc. *js

On 11/9/14 the turbo failed on my 2013 vw passat with the tdi diesel engine. vw knows they are having a serious issue with their turbos on the tdi engine (europe currently has a class action law suit against them). in august i received a letter in the mail from vw extending my warranty on the turbo to 10 years/120000 miles. they are simply waiting for the turbos to fail rather than replacing them on all 2012 & 2013 passats. this is a serious safety concern, when the turbo fails you loose all engine power (ie. gm ignition recall). this is an extremely dangerous position for vw to put its customers in who don't have the knowledge of what to do in a situation when you loose engine power at highway speeds. mine did just that, it failed on the highway resulting in no power. i would like to see vw recall these turbos and replace them in all the affected cars before it causes a fatality. *tr

Redundant tank heater failure. very common issue (to the point that there are several "how to" fix it yourself procedures and a "hack" to trick the mil light into thinking it is working. even though it failed within the carb warranty period, vw refused to fix under carb warranty because a vw dealership did not diagnose it within the warranty period (it was 3rd party mechanic) and car is now well out of carb warranty. it is a very costly repair and an extremely common failure, to the point were there is a vw tsb on the part failing in the passats and touregs. i have approached vw twice on the issue, but to no love from them. car is still drivable since this part is not used in the climate that i drive it in, so i have not fixed it for a year and a half now.

While starting from a stop sign, vehicle seemed to have low power. vehicle would accelerate, but very slowly. a few miles later, i had to stop for another car that had stopped to turn left into a driveway. when i attempt to accelerate after that car had turned, i had no power (vehicle was still running). i was able to coast to the side of the road, but a vehicle coming up from behind me had to brake quickly to avoid hitting my car from behind. i had the car towed to the dealer, which confirmed a failure of the turbocharger system and then replaced the turbocharger under warranty. replacement of turbocharger appears to have fixed the problem. *tr

Turbocharger failed. dealer is fixing under warranty. dealer stated that there have been enough turbocharger failures on the diesel tdi that they are now stocking all turbo parts for repair. *tr
