We have classified the 39 complaints from 2002 Toyota Sequoia about SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC into the following categories.
I have a 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 4x4 and my abs, brake, vcs, trac lights on my dashboard remain on. i have researched this problem on www.edmunds.com and on www.tundrasolutions.com and appears to a common problem for owners of 2000-2003 sequoia models. my 2002 has had several recalls that dealt with brakes and suspension. it appears that when the brake recall was conducted they did not upgrade other parts of the braking system including computer sensors/modules. i believe this is a safety related defect to these model years that should be covered by toyota. what i read on the above websites is that toyota has charged owners thousands of dollars to repair this defect when it should be a free repair. *nm
(1)the dashboard lights for abs, vsc, & traction control flickered, and then remained on permanently. (2)the abs and vsc have malfunctioned which seriously affects the braking & stability control of the vehicle in emergency handling situations, endangering person(s) in vehicle. (3)right toyota in az could not determine problem, although technician stated this was a common failure of the 2002 sequoia. *tr
I have a 2002 toyota sequoia limited. i bought it used in sept/2004. in may/2005 at 29,000 mi i replaced the brake pads. in aug/2005 at 32,000 i had the rotors resurfaced. in oct/2005 i had the rotors and brake pads replaced. the rotors were warped. before all three repairs the car vibrated during braking on hills. toyota dealer is giving us the same run around that i keep reading in other complaints on the internet. we're waiting to hear back from a toyota rep about why they don't stand behind their vehicle when there are so many documented cases of brake problems on this truck. *nm
Vsc turns on at low speed and high speed under normal driving conditions. brakes activate on their own, front end shakes and pulls hard to the right. almost caused me to drive off the road. toyota performed an inspection which found nothing. i need to take it in again but this is an unsafe condition and action needs to be taken. many other seem to have the same problem. *nm
In august, 2005 my sequoia began to shake at the steering wheel. i took it in to a local repair shop. they replaced the front brakes. they informed me that the rear rotors would soon need to be replaced. in may, the rear rotors were and entire brakes and pads were replaced at a toyota dealership. the sequoia still shakes badly. i took it back to the first repair center, which has informed me that the front rotor needs to be replaced. the shaking is so bad that it is hard to steer. it has caused the tires to become out of alignment and i have since bought four new tires. i noticed that lots of tundra owners have the same problem and i have encountered two people in my town with the same problem with their sequoia. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota sequoia. while driving 40 mph, the steering wheel vibrated. the dealer replaced the brakes, rotors, and calipers. the dealer stated that the vehicle had 45% brake functionality. the current mileage was 76,639 and failure mileage was 45,000.
Vsc trac dash light flashed intermittently and then stayed lit at 45,000 miles. per toyota dealer service department, the vehicle skid control (vsc) computer and steering angle sensor failed. as a result of vsc computer failure, the vehicle's antilock brake system and vehicle skid control system are disabled. *nm
I have a 2002 toyota sequoia limited. i've had two sets of brake pads and rear shoes and even new rotors but i still have a shaking problem. it fixes it for a few weeks and then it's right back to shaking. my braking distance has increased greatly
I bought a "toyota certified" 2002 toyota sequoia in late '04. roughly 6 months into ownership - my vsc (traction control) system began having intermittent issues - 2 full-day trips to the dealership made no results - the dealership was unable to recreate the problem. another 4-6 months later, the vsc failed completely, and after investigation, i find the issue is very common and very expensive to fix. the failure leaves me without abs and without vsc (two of the reasons i bought the car i did) and at an increased risk of having an accident, as without functional abs the brakes lock quite easily. calls to my dealership have left me with the impression the fix will be in the $2000 neighborhood, and i haven't yet come up with that. the incident date is approximate to the start of the issues. *jb
Problem with 02 sequoia where brakes vibrate the car, and stopping ability is diminished. problem to occurs when brakes become heated. (driving down a long hill in second gear, using the brakes to keep the vehicle under control when i would get to the bottom of the hill, the vehicle would vibrate and the brakes would loose some stopping ability. i would be unable to make an emergency stop in this condition. i took it to the dealer on 9/22/04 who stated that the rotors were warped & the pads bad. not covered under warranty. i explained that this vehicle is for long trips & vacations. little use of brakes in these driving conditions. i explained that i have another vehicle with over 236,000 miles, and that i know how to use my brakes. (95 nissan pathfinder with original rotors) he then stated that the sequoia is a much heavier vehicle and to compare them isn't the same, and it will take more to stop the sequoia. i agreed but stated that the sequoia should have a brake capable of stopping it, especially since i am supposed to be able to tow a load of up to 6000 lbs. i contacted toyota corporate. the person there stated there was a tsb for this & the tundra concerning the brakes, and the dealer should have corrected it. i informed her that the dealer had written no tsb_x0019_s on the workorder highlighted in yellow. she told me the dealer will correct the problem. after 3 days i contacted toyota again, and they put me on hold. they said the svc manager had been out & would call later. later the dealer called and stated that out of _x001c_good will_x001d_ he would correct the problem. the following day i went in to have it fixed. went from 4 bad rotors & brakes, to only 2 rotors were bad. they resurfaced the front rotors. after the repair was made, i took it to a hill that i have to drive down in 2nd gear, a few miles long. at the bottom of the hill, the brakes start loosing their stopping abilities. the vibrations were gone, but the heating & stopping problem remains. *ak
The brakes were defective. while merging onto the highway the skid light came on and the brakes were applied. vehicle would not accelerate, then, it suddenly picked up speed. vehicle was serviced one year ago for the same problem. a computer sensor was defective. *ak
2002 toyota sequoia with severe front end vibration on braking while vehicle had approximately 35000 miles. dealer found rotor warping and changed disc brake pads and "turned"rotor. problem recurred in vehicle now with 56000 miles and had to replace disc pads again and turned rotor to minimum safety standard. first occurrence at 35000 miles covered by warranty, this most recent episode had to pay for. was told the vehicle is a very heavy one and not unusual to require frequent brake pad replacement and rotor replacement. i feel this is a safety hazard as the vibration can come on unexpectedly and initially was very severe during the 35000 mile dealer service but noticed a very slight vibration most recently and therefore brought into dealership before the problem was overt. i also believe this is an engineering flaw in which brake pads/rotor mismatch causes premature wear and potential safety and handling problems during sudden braking. have contacted manufacturer who has filed a complaint number but was told to not expect any response. *jb
I am having front brake vibration on a 2002 toyota sequoia. i see where toyota has issued a tsb (br00502) on this. my concern is safety. at interstate speeds when i brake the vibration is severe. i have contacted toyota and they refuse to fix the problem because i have 42,000 miles on my car. does nhtsa consider this tsb a safety problem?*ak
We have a 2002 sequoia. i have had the rotors replaced three time at 18,277, 28,460 and now at 42,463. the first time the car was vibrating a little, each time the sound and noise get worse. *ak
While on vacation in florida, our 2002 toyota sequoia just froze up. it would not move. luckily, no one was hurt, however, when the tow truck finally came, the only was to get it up on the flatbed was to drive it on backwards. it turns out all the bolts were loose on the calipers. the only people that had worked on my car was the toyota dealer after a complaint i had at 15,000 miles. i have since had my toyota dealer look at it, and they serviced it again after receiving service bulletins on the subject. get those brakes looked at every time you service your vehicle.*ak
The front brakes seem to wear out at an excelerated rate. i had the front rotors replaced when the vehicle had under 30,000 miles, do to gouging of the rotors. the vehicle is now just over 30,000 miles and the vcs light comes on, and anti-skid activates, and when i press on the brakes there is horrible vibrations and grinding.*ak
Excessive wear on front brake pads. at 35000 miles the front brakes were worn down to 10%; the rear pads were only worn down to 70%. the dealer did not think this is a problem, but it would appear that the rear brakes are doing no work to stop the car. i have a 2002 toyota sequoia, sr5, 4x4.*ak
While driving and when depressing the brakes brake pedal is delayed, resulting in extended stopping distance. *ak
The brakes on my 2002 toyata sequoia is failing or has failed. there are several complaints on the websites and toyota have some service bulletins out. i consider this a very serious saftey problem and would like to see an investigation and possible recall on this vehicle.
Vsc dash light ("idiot light") has been consistently on now for the last 10,000 miles (current odometer = 51,000 +/-). the light was on intermittently starting before the vehicle was 1-1/2 years old (<25,000 miles.) *jb in addition to the vsc light, the 'brake' light stays on (originally illuminated only when the parking brake was engaged.), plus the abs light is consistently lit. the vehicle was taken to toyota more than once with the vsc/abs/brake lights complaint, but toyota was unable to diagnose any problem until a service performed after the 36,000 mi warranty expired, at which point the dealer thought an abs computer replacement might solve the problem. the dealer did not acknowledge any problem until after this 36,000 mile point despite intermittent events occurring very early on.
When braking get vibration and was told by toyota dealer rotors are warped and need to be changed. car has approximately. 26k miles and was told toyota warranty does not cover which seems strange to me. i have noticed seems to be a problem based on internet searches. *nlm
The front brake rotors have warped for the second time causing excessive front end vibration when braking. the steering wheel oscillates to the extent that braking from highway speeds is unstable. i had to resurface both front rotors at 8500 and 22000 miles to remove run out. this is unacceptable for a $40k vehicle that has only seen normal use and is regularly maintained. *ak
I have a 2002 toyota sequoia. when i brake the front end vibrates almost until a complete stop. the problem is persistent and i'm concerned because it ultimately results in longer time to stop and reduced braking ability. *nlm
Brakes/seal i brought the truck in for 15,000 mile checkup. this is from the repair report: "oil leak from rear axle seal was leaking. removed both side axle shaft assemblies due to one side was leaking worse than the other. replaced axle seals on axle housing inside. also needed to replace rear pads and turn rear rotors due to grease build up on surfaces from axle seals leaking." this caused lubricant/fluid to coat the break pads providing no friction; no rear breaks. i spoke to dealer at colonial toyota and they mentioned that they had heard of similar incidents but had never worked on one before. also said it was a factory defect that could be fixed. *nlm
Consumer states that brake rotors are wearing, and when applying the brakes, vehicle will have heavy vibration and extended stopping distance. dealer notified. *ak
Between 5000 and 10000 miles a brake squeal (rear passenger side) began. during 10000 mile service the service dept at the dealership checked the brake and "cleaned". the squeal stopped for about 4 days. during 15000 mile check the service department checked the brake and "cleaned". again the squeal stopped for about 4 days. during the 20000 mile check the "cleaning" was performed again. after about 4 days the squeal returned. i am driving a new sienna with a terrible brake squeal. good advertisement for toyota !!! the service dept says it can't be fixed. i think on a new vehicle the brake should be replaced. *jb
Toyota is advising brakes need to be replaced. car has 260000 miles on it and is 1yr old. have complained about brake issue to toyota at 15000 miles. no solution toyota did nothing. brakes make grinding noise like gravel. also the vsc system engages and does not take power from drive train, result in very loud metal shearing noises from undercarriage. toyota is saying this is normal. toyota is advising the avg life of brakes on this car is approx 20000 miles there is a major design error between the vcs and the abs brake system resulting poor brake life and this can not be a safe situation when vsc does not release power to brakes when it activates. vcs also activates at drop of a hat. general brake design must have major design flaw if avg life is only 20000 miles. *nlm
I own a 2002 toyota sequoia limited with serious front brake problems. i purchased the 2002 sequoia truck new in october of 2001. at 12,000-14,000 miles, the front brakes would vibrate and grind very badly. the vsc almost caused an accident due to it would activate for no reason and i was unable to accelerate into oncoming traffic. the dealer new about the brake problem and replaced the front rotors and pads. front brakes worked great after replacing the parts. currently i am at 30,000 miles, the same brake problem again. i took the truck to a mechanic just for an inspection and the pads look new and the rotors now have gouges in them. the brakes squeal very loud and the metal grinding vibration is back again. my sister has the same exact model and year, her brakes are doing the exact same thing. *jb
Consumer states that the vehicle would vibrate when applied the brakes, dealer has been notified and replaced rotors, two weeks later consumer states has the same problem and dealer inspected and can correct the problem. please provide further information. ts
Dt: 2002 toyota sequoia. the brake rotors and pads wore out quickly. this caused shaking in the steering and extended stopping distance. consumer took vehicle to the dealership on 12-12-2002, and they replaced the caliper assembly, the front calipers, back plate, and bearings. this problem occurred again on 8-5-2004. however, warranty expired. consumer took vehicle took vehicle to dealer because the front end vibrated again and there was a grinding noise. the dealer replaced the brakes pads and machined the rotors. the third time was on 7-29-05, the rotors, calipers ,and pads were completely worn out. the vehicle is currently being repaired at the dealership. there is tsb br0052 on this issue. when consumer contacted the manufacturer, they said that they would send an attention notice about the tsb to the dealership. they told consumer when he got to the dealership that he should talk to the customer service representative , who was unavailable at the time he contacted the dealership. as of now the consumer has not been able contact the customer service representative . *ak
Vsc frequently activates at low speeds and high speeds under dry conditions. brakes activate on their own, front end shakes and grinds. definitely a safety issue. in shop 8 times for same condition without successful repair. toyota now believes they have solved the problem but has agreed to replace the vehicle at consumers request. toyota has been diligent in trying to resolve the problem and honorable in reaching a resolve. *nlm
At 12000 miles brakes were completely worn out. consumer had to replace rotors, and was very concerned about safety due to excessive wear, at 20000 miles the second set of brakes were replaced. *ak *nlm
At approximately 8000 miles and just 3 months since new, the front whells started to vibrate during braking and dark soot deposits seen on front wheel rims. vehicle taken to dealer for service check and was told rotors were warped from overheating and was a known problem. dealer installed brake upgrade package (larger design brake calipers and pads) and turned brake rotors offered free of charge by toyoya. vehicle has since been driven for 3 months with new upgrade package installed and front wheels are again vibrating same as original design problem.
We have a 2002 sequoia, not long after we bought it the vsc and trac off light started coming on, and the booster assy was replaced by our local toyota dealer. we have had to replace the brakes or parts of the brakes three times, 8/21/02, 3/11/03, and 5/3/03, costing some where close to $1000.00. on june 6th, i took the sequoia into toyota for a service check and was told that everything was fine. 3 weeks later we felt that there was something wrong with the brakes again, and called toyota motor corp. they notified the local dealership, and the brakes were replaced for free. now today my vsc and trac off light started coming on again.*ak
When driving at 35 to 40 mph or more and brakes are applied a very strong vibration will shake the hole vehicle even at curves. this represents a strong safety hazard. this vibration is not normal, dealer replaced front disk pads and repaired the disks but considering the low millage its hard to belive pads where worn out. i think something is not wright. i made some research in this sites and found other customers with same or similar situation with the toyota pick up v8 (tundra) -.*ak
Driveshaft was defective. after coming to a complete stop if felt as if consumer had been rear ended. vehicle was serviced seventeen times, and the dealer stated it was normal.*ak there is also a thumping noise and vehicle lurches forward associated with a hard start condition. brakes grab at times. rear speakers inoperative 3rd row. sunroof rattle. water inside marker light covers when raining. rubbng noise from rear wheels. center wheel cap was tightened. *tt *tc
Consumer states that vehicle is been having problems with vsc since the purchase of the vehicle.dealer has been notified. nlm
