I was driving and my car's low engine oil light came on. i brought it to toyota and this employee helped me pour in 2.5 quarts of oil. this is in between the maintenance scheule. after getting an oil consumption test from toyota, the employee told me that toyota's standard is that we can lose a quart of oil for every 1200 miles. i brought my car back to them after 1,000 miles. they said that my car passed the test, i noticed that they added a quart of oil to my car. this is so not normal! i just received the extended warranty notice a couple of weeks ago. it defeats the purpose of notifying us if toyota denies that our cars have the oil consumption problem. this powerful company is bullying everyone. a lawsuit does not help get our cars fixed. please recall the cars. otherwise, you are letting toyota get away with bullying behavior. thanks!
Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota camry. while driving at 65 mph, the engine stalled. the vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 78,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle lost power. the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. upon further inspection, the contact noticed coolant leaking from the front of the vehicle. the vehicle had previously been inspected by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired and was towed to the contact's residence where the water pump was replaced by an independent mechanic. afterwards, the vehicle failed to start. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 94,500.
Oil change done june 22,2015. went to local mechanic to check all fluids before drive to tampa. oil level very low. had oil added on august 22 ,2015. on october 27, 2015 i noticed a red light on left side of dashboard saying maint reqd.google says time for oil change. sticker from toyato says next oil change 95,330 miles, im only 94,100 or close. is there a recall. i contacted toyota customer service and was told that there was an oil problem, windshield wiper and sun visor problem, which i had not recognized the oil problem. i thought the dealership had just neglected to put the right amount of oil in doing the oil change. prior to problem i received possible recall notice for something else . campaign # id#15v577 reference # 878051. i will be calling toyota (autonation) in pinellas park about problem. the light comes on whenever i start up the engine and stays on for about 2 to 3 minutes while driving.
Excessive oil consumption. took to toyota dealer and they performed a test on it and said it was normal to. loosing a quart ever 1100 miles.
Ran some errands in the vehicle. was running perfectly. got home and shut the vehicle off to unload groceries and when it was started back up to park in the barn it blew a head gasket. there were no warning lights that came on prior at all prior to this event. took to toyota dealership and it was diagnosed with cylinder #2 misfire, rough idle, white smoke coming out exhaust which was caused by the blown head gasket.
Bought 09 camry new. in 2015, @ 130,000 miles, the "low oil" warning light came on. took it to the dealer to do the oil consumption test, (they overfilled the engine with oil). when came back in 1200 miles was told the car is burning oil but not enough for toyota to cover the repair (since they overfilled the engine with oil) the car continued to consume more oil. now at 170,000 miles, the car burns around 2 qrts of oil every 1000. very disappointing.
Car had no oil left in it after 5000 miles and just getting oil change at that time. was told my 2.4 engine is known to "eat" oil per service tech and toyota is doing an "oil consumption test" on the engine after i put 1200-1300 miles on new engine oil. car went through 4.5 qts of oil in 5000 miles! not burning out exhaust and not leaking anywhere. service tech advised this is known problem. according to them, after "oil consumption test" if my car "eats" less than a quart in 1100 miles that is acceptable! that is not. i know 20 year old cars that don't burn or leak or "eat" oil at oil. this known issue with the toyota 2.4 engine should be recalled and owners given a new engine or compensation. i cannot keep putting oil in car every 1100 miles! toyota needs to be held accountable for a defect they are aware of. i was lucky to not have taken my car on long trip and have engine seize up on me on highway causing a possible crash. please help with this problem. i know others have similar complaints with nhtsa and also other websites and wanted to bring mine to your attention also. thank you very much!! *tr ...updated 07/30/15 *bf
My car consumes excessive amounts of oil. i need to add oil about every 1000 miles. toyota has conducted 2 oil consumption tests and tells me that the oil consumption is normal.
My 2009 toyota camry is consuming a lot of oil, in between oil changes i have to add a quart of oil, it is burning oil abnormally. i took it to the toyota dealership for the oil consumption test but was told my vehicle is fine and burning oil as it should for age of the car. my mechanic tells me different. however i do not feel comfortable with how it is burning the oil so quickly.
Me and my wife brought the car off inland wires brother his mom got it brand new we got it with only about 40000.00 miles now we just turned 90000.00 miles the motor making bad noise toyota knew this problem when car was manufactured, but they still sold it with bad motor. the motor had under 50000.00 miles when it started knocking losing oil,anti-freeze toyota knew this bad motor from factory.
I purchased my 2009 toyota camry in 2008 after graduating college. i have always serviced my car as required per the toyota manufacturers guide to have it serviced every 5,000 miles. the last three or four times i had to take the car at least 500-1000 miles before the required service mileage. about 90% of the service maintenance was performed at the toyota dealership. per the toyota service package, the technicians are suppose to do a through inspection of the car to notify any areas of concern to the customer. i read a tsb that was issued by toyota in november 2011 regarding excessive oil consumption due to a defective seal or piston ring. recently before i hit the road for vacation, i was checking my tire pressure and decided to check my oil levels. the car was not suppose to be serviced for another 500 miles and their was no oil on the dipstick..nothing came out. i took my car to the nearest jiffy lube and asked the mechanic to look under the engine to see if there was an external oil leak. the mechanic checked and said no oil was leaking on the outside. he told me there could possibly be engine oil burning up, which is why i pulled the toyota tsb. this is very concerning because i wouldn't want my engine to lock up driving at a high speed down the freeway. toyota should be held accountable for the manufacturing defect and should investigate the matter. there is a class action lawsuit against toyota for the above matter and i will be sharing my story. thank you
At intermittent times, most noticeably while braking or turning or both, warning light and sound activates. checked just recently, no oil on dipstick. suspect excessive oil consumption manufacturer defect on my year and model which is not being addressed by toyota.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. while driving at approximately 60 mph, the vehicle decreased in speed, unknown warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle stalled. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was not able to be driven. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,300.
My 2009 camry started burning excessive oil i am guessing at about 85,000 (toyota definitely has record of it). i told them about it at my service appointment and they put the dye in and checked for oil leaks. all was fine. since it just happened once i decided that maybe it was a fluke. nope. same thing happened so my next service appointment i mentioned it again. they told me i would either need a new engine or i would just have to put up with it and make sure there was always enough oil. it wasn't too bad at the time because it would only happen every 2,500 or so. now it is happening every 1,000 miles, and i looked online and could not believe how many complaints there are for the same thing, and the fact that there is no recall!!! can you help get them to fix it since there are soooo many complaints on the exact same subject?
Around 140,000 miles (3-1-15) i noticed that i was staring to add oil between oil changes. it has become worse with time (and mileage). i now (9-12-16) need to check and add oil at least every three weeks.
In 2015 i received several recall notices from toyota, inc. the first of several were the sun visors defect. although mechanicsville toyota fixed it when they fixed the engine consumption problem in 2015, it currently has the same problem as the visor on the driver's side doesn't stay up/defective. the second, the dashboard area will crack due to sun exposure which it has tiny cracks. however, the major was recall on, engine oil consumption. mechanicsville toyota, 6546 mechanicsville tpke. mechanicsville, va fixed the problem, however, the problem has returned. this defect will cause the engine to lock if oil consumption isn't checked and added regularly.
Our car began burning excessive oil around 75,000 miles.as it turns out, this problem is due to a defective 2az-fe engines which were installed in the following vehicles: 2007-2011 toyota camry hv, 2007-2009 toyota camry, 2009 toyota corolla, 2009 toyota matrix, 2006-2008 toyota rav4, 2007-2008 toyota solara, 2007-2009 scion tc, and 2008-2009 scion xb . toyota knew about the material design defect engines but they decided to sell the cars anyway: the engine defect typically becomes apparent either during or shortly after the limited warranty period has expired, so it wouldn't be their problem. in response to a lawsuit in 2014, they issued an extended warranty. however, the guidelines are very restrictive and only cover the most egregious cases, leaving us with a faulty engine that consumes a quart of oil every 1200-1400 and no means of repairing the vehicle. *tr
It has 80,000 miles and burns excessive oil. i checked it yesterday and there was no oil touching the dipstick. it starts consuming oil two years ago and now it consumes 3 quarts between the oil changes. *tr
Excessive oil consumption
Excess engine oil consumption. engine oil keep disappearing. have to add more oil every week or two (that's less than a 500 miles to burn a quart or 2 engine oil!) to bring it back within the acceptable level. there is no visible leaks, no blue smoke indication. it is dangerous if engine suddenly fail when driving. this seems a common manufacturing defect from toyota (t-sb-0094-11: 2az-fe engine oil consumption). *tr
The car is consuming excessive oil. have to add 2-3 quarts of oil between oil changes about 5000 miles. problem started around 35000 miles. it now has 65400 miles. the consumption has progressively increased. *tr
Excessive oil consumption recall: over the last year i noticed my oil consumption was drastically increasing. i started burning through oil and having to add a quart every 2 months and now monthly. in the past few months, a very large plume of white smoke would spew out of my tail pipes; not just a little but a large cloud of smoke. it has a very burnt smell to it too. the smoke dissipates after the car warms and as long as the car is warm, it will not smoke. it only smoke when the vehicle has been off for over 2-3 hours. i was told by a certified toyota mechanic that i need to replace the engine due to faulty internal parts. he stated it was the reason for such a high level of oil consumption. i discovered that toyota is currently recalling certain engine blocks due to oil consumption defects, however my vin number is not part of that recall as of now. according to toyota, my vin could eventually become part of the recall (oil consumption recall) but as of now, it is not. i don't understand how a major manufacturer will not stand by their product and repair my engine considering they are already recalling other engines with the exact same issues i am having with my camry. this was my first camry too. very disappointed with toyota.
At 76427 (3865 miles after oil change) the oil light came on and the dip stick was dry. i took in to mcquire toyota and they started a phase 1 oil consumption test. at 1300 miles i took it back, they only added 1 quart of oil, it passed their test. then after 2499 miles the oil light came on again and the dip stick was dry. they told me there was nothing they could do about it. i constantly check the oil because i am afraid that the oil will go dry and the engine will blow. i think that this problem will only get worse. after 2499 miles my oil light should not be coming on and the dip stick should not be dry. toyota's oil consumption test may look good on paper, but it doesn't work in real life. i am 63 tears old and i have never had a vehicle where this happens. i am concerned that this all is going to damage the engine, so i have to keep a close watch of it. thank you. *tr
Engine oil dries up after some days after oil change without any leak or anything. it is happening so many times that i made sure and checked engine oil and after 20 30 days there will be no oil in engine and the engine warning do not come on. there is no leak uder the car. i made sure by putting cardboard under car so if ther is drip i can see . i checked with so many mechanics last 3 years no one knows why this is happening.
My toyota camry car got water pump leak issue and it overheated my engine and it needed engine replacement. i am out of warranty period.it has 36k miles on it and 5 year 6months old. toyota dealer asking me to replace the engine, water pump, and other misc parts.i have not received any recall notice. is my vin number missed in recall. am i ripped off because of toyota issue. *tr
2009 toyota camry. consumer writes in regards to concerns with oil consumption. *ld the consumer stated the vehicle was tested for oil consumption, but no issue was found. the engine failure persisted. the engine began leaking oil and coolant. *js
Excessive oil consumption. camry went from burning 1 qt. of oil per 5,000 miles (car had 82k miles on it) to burning 1 qt. per 450 miles (car has 158k miles on it). toyota tested the car and said it came up 0.1 qt short of requiring repair under enhanced warranty,
The car uses an excessive amount of oil. the problem started around 45,000 miles and continues to get worse. toyota knows about the problem, and has sent me a tsb. under the tsb they will top off your oil, seal up any way that oil goes in or out and you drive 1000 miles and they measure the oil to see if you have lost a full quart. i have never in my 40 years of driving had a car that lost that much oil. toyota is avoiding taking care of their customers. they should be forced to fix it. they know they have bad pistons.
About a month ago i was driving along and the radio got really loud for no reason for 10 seconds and then subsided. i didn't think much of this at the time, but after wednesday, i now believe it must have been related somehow. i was sitting off-road waiting for traffic to pass by in order to turn-around and begin driving south. i had just turned on the car and turned the steering wheel in order to make my approximate 175 degree turn. my foot was on the brake and the car ready to move. all of a sudden the engine revved up and the car tried lurching forward as though someone's foot was on the accelerator. i had to reassert my foot pressure on the brake in order to keep the car from moving. my foot had not left the brake, there was no person or thing trying to accelerate the car, it just occurred. the news about faulty accelerators entered my mind. there has not been any further incident at this time. *tr
Driving north on a highway i experienced the battery check and check engine light turned on, as well as lost power steering. pulled off at the first available exit to see what happened, engine was no longer powering the wheels and i coasted to a stop on a ramp where i was forced to wait for police assistance. opening the hood i saw the serpentine belt thrown off the engine and steaming from the belt side, after police helped me push the car to a nearby parking lot there was noticeable wobble in the water pump which allowed antifreeze to leak out and get sprayed inside the engine compartment. the next day the vehicle was towed to a dealer who wanted to run a diagnostic and then wanted to disassemble the engine to see the extent of the damage. i was informed that the cylinder head was warped due to the loss of coolant when the water pump failed and that they saw this often enough to be sure of the cause. water pump failed at around 31,000 miles with no leakage beforehand. this seems to be an issue with the camry that toyota is refusing to admit to and assist in repairs. due to self maintenance of car they claim damage was most likely showing and ignored by us. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that when the vehicle was started, the service oil warning light illuminated. the contact mentioned that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. the vehicle was taken to a dealer. the technician advised the contact to bring the vehicle back at intervals of 1,200 miles and another time at 1,500 miles to check the oil levels for the manufacturer standards. the technician informed the contact that the piston ring possibly needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 82,000.
Traveling on cruise control at 60 mph on freeway - heard rattle and metallic sounds so i pulled off to side. when my mechanic opened up the oil pan there was no oil and lots of small metal shards - blown engine. as it happens i had scheduled the routine maintenance (every 5000 mi.) so all i saw on the dash display was the usual scheduled maintenance message - no low oil notifications or, anything out of the ordinary. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that while attempting to stop, the vehicle made a loud bang sound and stalled. the contact mentioned that multiple warning lamps illuminated on the instrument panel. the vehicle was merged to the side of the road but failed to restart after several attempts. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 56,000.
This model of car has a manufacturer's defect in the pistons that is well documented in various resources, causing the engine to rapidly burn oil. see the following link for discussion: http://www.carcomplaints.com/toyota/camry/2009/engine/excessive_oil_consumption.shtml the car is now burning up to a quart of oil per 1000 miles and toyota is claiming this is normal. *tr
Highly excessive oil consumption that has progressively gotten worse over time now up to 2 quarts in 1,200 miles! toyota denies there is anything wrong which they must know is a lie!!!
I was driving the car to work and the abs light and red brake light came on in the dashboard. also, the rpm gauge was going up and down. i stopped and turned off the car. when i turned the car back on, the lights came back. i took it into just a jiffy lube because it was the closest car place near me. they checked the brake lights, brake fluid, car battery, and checked for functional issues. there were none. i took it to a toyota dealership and they did a diagnostic that came back with code u0029 for communication loss at skid control (ecu) - engine control unit needs to be replaced. they also checked out all operational functions of the car and did not find any other issues. they gave a $2k estimate to repair the ecu. the car is still driveable and the lights still come on intermittently. sometimes when the abs and brake light come on though, the air conditioning stops working and then the spedometer sticks at 0. if i stop the car and turn it back on, it sometimes clears up. the vehicle is only 6 years old. i had my last toyota for 14 years and drove it for 239k miles. i am concerned about the safety of a usually reliable vehicle and think it must be a defect. *tt
Car was running rough, went down my drive way, engine light came on. had it towed to toyota dealership and was told coolant in cylinders and engine was wrecked. *tr
I own a 2009 camry which i bought as a new car. few days ago i was approaching my garage driveway at a normal slow speed when my car suddenly accelerated by its own. i tried to press the brake at hard as i could to stop the car but it continue to speed up till it smashed into the garage wall and broke it. the impact was so severe the stair case on the other side of the wall go displaced and shattered. air bags did not deploy. i kept on pressing the brakes but the wheels were rotating so fast that the front tire got burst after rubbing so fast against the garage floor. the vehicle finally came to stop after the impact but the entire garage and the house was full of black smoke due to burning tires. this uncontrolled sudden acceleration might kill someone if it had happened on a city street. this is a severe problem and must be investigated thoroughly to avoid similar cases in future. we demand that the regulatory agencies and state and federal transportation boards shall investigate this case and avoid similar future incidents. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that the engine oil would dispense rapidly at approximately every 2,000 miles. the contact also stated that the low oil pressure warning light illuminated. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be diagnosed and was placed in a 1,000 mile consumption test. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vin was unavailable. the approximate failure mileage was 36,800.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact was driving approximately 10 mph when she applied the brakes and the engine rpms increased excessively. the contact shifted into neutral and the rpms decreased as the vehicle came to a stop. the failure was recurring. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who could not duplicate the failure. the manufacturer was notified of the problem and advised that there were no failulres with the vehicle. the approximate failure mileage was 56,200.
My oil light blinked once on my way home. i checked the oil the next morning before starting the car and it showed no oil on the dipstick! we added 4 1/2 qts of oil. i had never been so much as a 1/2 qt low at oil change. there are no leaks. the oil light never stayed on as a warning. my motor could have conceivably burned up without my knowing there was anything wrong. my 5 year old vehicle is now using at least 1/2 - 1 qts of oil every 1200 miles. we have a 1999 toyota camry with 245,000 miles that only uses approx. 1/2 qt oil per 3,000 miles. after researching on the internet, i can see that mine is not a singular event. toyota should be made to fix the problem. *tr
Toyota engine excessive oil consumption. there is almost no engine oil left after driving about 1500 miles. *js
Engine piston oil control rings improperly retrieving oil in use. the pistons aren't properly treating the oil so i have to refill new oil multiple times a month. it falls under the model and year that toyota was doing recalls for the model in question. i wonder if this issue can still be fixed! the pistons need to be replaced! the engine works really well other than burning oil like a frying pan. (oil & engine temperatures remain normal (tested) but the oil continues to disappear. no leaks.
2007 - 2009 toyota camrys have been noted to have excessive oil consumption issues. my camry is burning approximately 2 qts every 3,000 miles. per toyota's request, my car has been routinely serviced by toyota dealerships; however, no one has ever brought the known issue with my model year to my attention. the most i've ever heard, "your car was a little low on oil." with a published service bulletin, toyota should have notified all effected owners with this information. as the sole owner, and with 99,000 miles, my camry is beyond their warranty, and will require an engine rebuild to mitigate the issue. this is a poor design by toyota and is unacceptable. *tr
My toyota camry consumes an exorbitant amount of oil. i bought this car in summer 2013 with approx 35,000 miles, and within two-three month after my first oil change, the low oil warning lamp would turn on at hard braking. it turned out that the oil level was critically low even though it had been very recently changed. i was lucky to discover it when i was close to home so i was able to add oil. the inspection of the car did not reveal any oil leaks. i now have to add oil every several weeks even though the car has barely touched 50,000 miles. the car is now out of warranty. had i embarked on a long trip right before the oil level fell low enough to trigger the low oil warning light, i could have experienced a catastrophic failure of the engine as open highway driving does not usually require hard braking. as a result i would have not found out that the engine was out of oil and could have suddenly stalled causing an accident. i am the second owner of this car. before it was serviced as a toyota dealer and the maintenance paperwork that came with the car did not point to any issues with the higher than normal oil consumption. please do not wait until people get hurt in accidents caused by failed engines and make toyota to fix this problem as the oil consumption is getting progressively worse with time and miles driven. instead of sudden acceleration people may start getting killed from sudden stops caused by failed engines!!! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 toyota camry. the contact stated that that the vehicle burned a massive amount of oil. the vehicle was burning two quarts of oil between oil changes or every three thousand miles. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis but no cause for the failure was found. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure and current mileage was 92,000.
Ref: toyota service bulletin "t-sb-0094-11" dated aug 11, 2011 background: car purchased in 2011 as a certified used toyota, approx 34k miles, currently has about 72k miles issue: parts in the engine are known to create problems by toyota, customers not notified and most of the complaints i've read are of customers with mileage upwards of 60k who have now been advised by toyota that they are responsible for the costly engine repairs. toyota analysts/adjusters informed me that since only about 4% of the toyota engines are affected by this bad engine part they are not doing a recall. i asked them why i hadn't been informed in writing of this known defect and their answer was that they only advise their technicians. this information could have helped me be more alert and understand why i was having to perform so many oil changes and to also prompt me to get my car tested at a toyota facility. my car was still running, the engine didn't seize up. the piston parts that were bad finally broke but since toyota claims it was a "failure to maintain lubrication" issue they feel they are not liable. they also said i should have been checking my oil every single time i turned on my car!!! well i'm gathering all of my documentation of my service maintenance records and will be retaining a lawyer. i truly believe it's just a matter of time before more customers come forward and this becomes the next civil action lawsuit against toyota. *tr
Moved to tx in 2012 and have not had any previous starting issues before moving. attempted to start the vehicle during my lunch break, engine turned over but was unable to start. attempted to start the car again and the engine cranked and started with a hard "jolt" as if the gear shift was out of position. several days later the temperature was warmer and the same problem occurred. scheduled a appointment with my local toyota dealership and was told all systems were normal and they could not determine the cause of the problem since they could not replicate starting issue. the starting issue occurs on relatively hot days, turning the key to "on" before starting does not help the problem, the second start attempt is usually a "hard" start such that it feels as if the engine is jerking. toyota should investigate electrical/fuel/and air components to determine the cause of this starting problem, especially since the issues seems to be temperature related. *tr
Letter to senator cornyn on behalf of constituent re toyota defect letter for his toyota model. *smd 2009 toyota camry. the consumer stated toyota sent him a letter regarding an excessive use of oil defect with his vehicle. the consumer stated he spent several months trying to work with toyota concerning the repair. he submitted all the necessary documents toyota requested. but in the end, they denied his claim, due to lack of documentation. the consumer has since had the vehicle fixed, at his expense. *jb
