We have classified the 233 complaints from 2006 Nissan Xterra about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I purchased a 2006 nissan xterra with 36k miles. may 15th, 2009. i currently have 112k miles on it and have a not start a/t cont fuse blown issue. my service engine soon light came on and took it to my mechanic who told me there was a code stating a speed differential between the front and rear of the transmission. soon after further inspection, my mechanic verified radiator fluid leaked into the transmission and i will need to replace both my radiator and transmission to the approx cost of $5500. needless to say, not only is the extended warranty expired, but i will have to pay the full amount of the repair out of pocket since the lawsuit filed against nissan concerning this issue expired in 2013. buyer beware!!! be careful if you purchase a nissan xterra from 2005-2010 unless you are prepared to fork out more money than expected to pay for a defect that nissan knew about but will no longer support.
My transmission and drive shaft went out of my vehicle today out of nowhere. i have a new job to get to and no money to fix or replace this vehicle. it's ridiculous considering it only has 136,000 miles on it. i was 2 miles from my house and driving approximately 20mph and it just stopped accelerating. i was stuck on the side of the road in 5 degree weather. i am beyond dismayed and completely without options.
I purchased a 2006 nissan xterra after-market in august 2019, mileage 144k. there was no indication of a problem during a test-drive, and it otherwise appeared to be in good condition. three days later, during city driving, the car began to strain to enter first gear from a stopped position (stop sign, traffic light), first a little, and then significantly, and began obstructing traffic-flow, and began overheating after multiple stop/starts. i was barely able to get the car home (4 miles) without having to pull over and call a tow-truck. a trip to the transmission shop on the next business day confirmed not just a transmission problem, but was told it was due to a known defect in nissan suv-type vehicles from this time-period. the car from the used dealer came with "car protection plus" coverage specifically for power-train issues, who denied that they would cover this particular transmission problem for this reason. i now own a very expensive paperweight, or pay a repair bill of $3k-$4k to fix a transmission and radiator that is more than the value of the car.
The metal tubes that separate engine coolant from the transmission fluid crack. coolant and transmission fluid mixes and cause the transmission to fail. the substance is milky, and cloudy like a milk shake. car was in motion on the city we were coming from the store.
Radiator coolant leaked into transmission and we only have 70,000 mileage. purchased extended warranty but nissan service said they don't covere the repair and our extended warranty expired. we saved this cat for our 16 years old son for his college soon ang preparing for dmv. we save money for his car so we don't need to worry. now, we are worried because it will cost us$8,000 for repair by replacing transmission and radiator. besides this i have to pay $190.00 for diagnostic fee. we are not rich and we prepared this car for our son, for his safety, now his 16 years old this june 2019 and ready to take the wheels, this car is his car for college. now, i'm heartbreaking because it's garage kept car with blanket all the time. 70k mileage only. security plus says 72 months/75,000 on odometer. we really need help for repair.
Transmission failure due to known issue involving cooling fluid leaking into transmission due to faulty lines in radiator that crack at 100,000 miles. quoted $6000 repair cost, car is totaled.,
April 5, 2019 i purchased a 2006 nissan xterra with 126k miles. may 15th, 2019 my service engine soon light came on and took it to my mechanic who told me there was a code stating a speed differential between the front and rear of the transmission. i took my vehicle to aamco and after inspection, they verified water from the radiator leaked into the transmission and i will need to replace both my radiator and transmission to the approx cost of $5800. needless to say, not only is the extended warranty expired, but i will have to pay the full amount of the repair out of pocket since the lawsuit filed against nissan concerning this issue expired in 2013. buyer beware!!! do not purchase a nissan xterra from 2005-2010 unless you are prepared to fork out more money than expected to pay for a defect that nissan knew about but will no longer support.
I bought a used 2006 xterra and i had no idea that the transmission coolers fail prematurely. all seemed ok for 2 weeks. one day driving back from dropping my 2 daughters off at their mothers house, i was on an incline, in a blind curve, and the vehicle stopped pulling completely. while stopped i tried to check the trans fluid and was almost ran over by a tractor and trailer because he couldnt see through the curve to know i was broke down in the road. then 10 minutes or so goes by and a minivan comes around the curve and had to lock his brakes up to keep from running into me. i was almost hit 2 times in a matter of 20 - 30 minutes waiting for help to arrive.
Default shifter cable
Takata recall. transmission will not shift.. mechanic states due to radiator coolant issues.
The radiator has cracked internally and mixed the engine coolant into the transmission reaulting in severly damages fluid leading to transmission damage and shifting damage.
Transmission cooler inside radiator failed, causing antifreeze to mix with transmission fluid. causing the transmission to fail. at 91,000 miles.
While driving my "check engine soon" light appear, today i took it to a nissan dealership to get a diagnostic to fix it. to make short the transmission and radiator needs replacement ($4,600.00 dlls)because there's antifreeze in the transmission fluid. online i found out that this problem is common to 2006 xterras, funny thing is nissan know all about it, but so far hasn't call a recall to fix their own mess. another thing, i've got serviced my vehicle at to nissan dealership s and never ever make a simple comment or advised about this problem with the radiator to me on my prior visits. it seems to me that they are reckless for holding critical info about preventable issues, specially since this is a design flaw on their part
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving approximately 50 mph, the radiator fractured and there was a transmission fluid leak. the contact, an independent mechanic, diagnosed that the oil cooler within the radiator was faulty. a dealer was not made aware of the failure. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 77,000. *tt *jb
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving 25 mph, the transmission slipped and prevented the vehicle from going into gear. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that coolant leaked into the transmission, which caused the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 165,000. the vin was not available.
Vehicle radiator rusted internally, therefore intermix coolant and transmission fluid. automobile constantly serviced at nissan dealers, no warning from nissan.
This car was purchased in california, i have had this car serviced at nissan dealers from california to connecticut, from universal city nissan in los angeles to bruce bennett in wilton, ct with stops in between. in a normal service check, it states on all invoices that fluids are checked. today sir, i found out that fluids are not checked and due to nissan's negligence my radiator and transmission are now married (intermix) and since that marriage a new radiator and transmission are being required. if you had performed the proper fluid checks, then the marriage could have been prevented and no replacement necessary. i want compensation, i.e. radiator/transmission on this 12 year xterra.
Radiator design failure allowed mixing of antifreeze with automatic transmission fluid. caused failure of both radiator and transmission. nissan previously offered assistance in repair but discontinued. will not repair my xterra as is now past extended warranty, but well under total miles. overheating in traffic stop lead to failure. nissan should have recalled all 2005-2007 xterras and frontiers with defective radiator. nissan took no action to notify owners that has not had repair. nissan only notified owners that had experienced failure and offered to compensate costs. failure was preventable with a fairly simple by pass of the transmission cooler or a replacement of the radiator to a redesigned version nissan issued in 2010. many owners were helped by nissan previously because of a class action lawsuit. now, nissan is no longer assisting owners with the failure even though it is still caused by the design failure of the radiator and not any action by the owner. if the owner had driven the vehicle harder and added more miles faster and experienced the failure, nissan would have compensated them i. whole or in part. owners with low mileage and older vechicles that are now experiencing the failure or will in the future are not being assisted by nissan. nissan should have done a complete recall of all vechicles with the defective radiator. owners are now forced to bear costs of $7,000 in repairs. a transmission failure can be a serious safety hazard if the transmission were to lock up while driving. fortunately my transmission failure occurred slowly and the radiator failure was catastrophic so the vechicle could not be driven. nissan should be made to supplement their prior extended warranty to cover any failure of the radiator causing contamination of the transmission fluid. failure is referred to as strawberry milkshake of death.
Leaking coolant is mixing with transmission fluid through the cooler lines to create a toxic hell stew that irreversibly damages everything around it.
2006 nissan xterra se. consumer writes in regard to transmission safety recall and reimbursement for replacement of part. *as *js
Car would not switch gears. it staid in 1st or 2nd and rpm went to red as i pulled away from my parking spot. transmission failure at 105,000 miles. cost of repairs: $4,000.00. after research on line, found out nissan never recalled the vehicle but offered extended co-payment warranty up to 100,000 miles to avoid fixing problem as the failure usually occurs at around 100,000 miles and above. mine was at 105k. these cars needed to be recalled and now i'm paying $4,000.00 to fix a known defect that nissan got away with not taking full responsibility to repair.
Possible transmission cooler leaking and allowing antifreeze coolant to get into the transmission and ruin it costinf a new transmission and radiator on top of the repair labor costs and nissan offering no help at all
Transmission destroy by leaking radiator antifreeze into transmission also catalytic converters clogged, my xterra only has 70 k miles on it, to early for all of this problems to happen it's going to cost me a lot of money to fix it, please help.
Takata recall transmission and radiator faliure
While driving on the highway the transmission failed. no warning, just check engine light and the transmission wouldn't go above 30 miles per hour without cutting off the car completely. had to be towed. after troubleshooting problem the radiator on transmission failed. come issue for this vehicle, just as noted in the safety recall a few years ago but nissan is no longer supporting their customers for this safety issue. well, after $3700, my transmission is rebuilt with new radiator. nissan should have covered this safety issue.. i was in traffic on a highway and the transmission failed, it was very stressful and unsafe for me to change lanes and pull over on a highway that has a 70 mph limit and i was in the middle lane. even though i put my flasher on traffic was very heavy and it was truly unsafe for not only myself but my passengers and those cars behind me that had to suddenly slow down because of my mechanical transmission failure.
I am the very unfortunate owner of a 2006 xterra, that is experiencing the infamous radiator leaking coolant fluid into the transmission. i have a 2006 nissan xterra automatic 4wd; purchased in 2009 certified pre-owned w/ 46k miles on it. now it has 137k on it and i unfortunately experienced the infamous "strawberry milkshake of death" where due to a radiator default it leaks coolant fluid into the transmission causing irreversible damage 2 days ago on may 6th 2017. right now the radiator is dead as well as the thermostat; a mechanic shop inspected the vehicule as i pulled over to their place when i experienced the issue and stopped driving immediately. i reached out to nissan consumer affair and; to just be able to go forward i must have the car tow to the closest dealership as it is the procedure and they can't determinate anything before car got inspected by official nissan service dpt. changing the radiator and the transmission will be pay out of my pocket unfortunately at this stage. i am out the mileage settled after the class action suit nissan got hit for this well documented issue. i am just another victim of what should have been a national recall from nissan.
Radiator failed internally and allowed transmission fluid to to mix with coolant and circulate through the transmission, destroying both the radiator and transmission. this happened suddenly on a a very busy highway and caused the total loss of propulsion. this endangered me due to the fast moving vehicles around that didn't know why i was slowing to a stop in traffic and i was very lucky to not be run over. cost of repair is at least $6,000, dealer price is more like $7,000 this happened when my xterra only had 110,970 miles and with no warning at all. this is total loss of the vehicle since it doesn't make any sense to repair at this price a vehicle with less resale value than the cost of the repair. i've attached pictures of a repair estimate and the "strawberry milkshake" looking mix of transmission fluid and radiator coolant that resulted.
Nissan xterra 2006 94,105 miles trans starting to slip all issues lead to radiator leake
While my wife and granddaughter were driving our 2006 nissan xterra on a highway, the transmission started to slip, not allowing the ability to maintain the proper safe posted driving speed. my wife had to pull over on the side of the road during heavy traffic, exposing both her, and my granddaughter to a safety hazard. the vehicle had to be towed, while they waited on the side of the road, getting picked up by a family member. subsequently i learned of a known defect in nissan radiators that fail, and leak into the transmission, causing it to fail. reportedly, it has been recognized the failures commonly occur around 90,000 miles, or a little over 2000 more miles than when this incident occurred. we were never notified of this potential defect, which should have involved a recall/warranty repair, rather than subjecting me, and my family, to this safety risk. i would assume there are many more vehicles in this same unsafe state today, awaiting the same development that occurred to my family. this matter needs to be addressed as soon as possible. thanks. *tr
Catastrophic transmission failure due to radiator defect (coolantt contamination)
The coolant leaked into the transmission, causing the transmission to fail. vehicle was in motion on a highway. *recall transmission failure*
Vehicle would not shift on busy rd. coolant leaked onto transmission per nissan dealer. nissan has known about this issue. this could have a bad safety issue as i had to try to get vehicle to dealer. i transport a handicapped chip ad well ad alzheimer/dementia clients and this could have been led to a very bad accident. why had there not been a recall on this being nissan has known of this problem?
I have transmission fluid in my anti freeze and anti freeze in my transmission. im told by a mechanic that this is a known nissan issue. apparently something in the radiator rots and the fluids mix causing transmission failure. mine hasn't failed yet, but my fluids are all contaminated as is the radiator and tranny?
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving 25 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission failed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 104,000.
Radiator leaked coolant into the transmission . my truck is now sitting at aamco with 5200 dollars worth of transmission radiator and computer board damage.
Well known problem with the radiator coolant leaking into the transmission lines and thus into the transmission. simple, inexpensive fix to replace the faulty radiator was not communicated to me and now it's too late to save the transmission. nissan got away with murder and caused thousands of people money that they should not have had to pay for defective parts. these parts should have been recalled as they cause a major safety hazard while driving. having your transmission fail on you while you're driving is a major safety concern. but because not enough people actually died from it a recall was not required.
Coolant leaking into transmission. while driving, vehicle shuttering, shaking and overall unsafe for myself and my 5-year old son.
Grinding noise - requested help from dealer but no avail. i am wandering why the department of justice is not stepping in especially that the problems has escalated to radiator leakage and destroying transmissions and nissan bribed our lawyers in the class action. how about timing chains for gods sake. we're more hurt by nissan than vw..
Like countless others, i have the smod, or strawberry milkshake of death, on my 2006 nissan xterra s. the radiator failed, which allowed coolant to mix with the transmission fluid. this results in the failure of the transmission and the radiator. nissan knew about this early on and did nothing to help owners until forced to by settling a class action lawsuit. the lawsuit was useless to me as i was already past the period covered by the settlement. all i could do was wait and hope it didn't happen to me. that hope ended yesterday.
Purchased vehicle in november 2015. dealer stated vehicle had been serviced and new radiator installed. in june 2016, transmission fluid was drained as regular maintenance and fluid was contaminated with engine collant, therefore, transmission fluid had not been fully flushed and replaced. flushed transmission with new transmission fluid to remove contaminated fluid. in july 2016, the vehicle was stationary and would not start due to a blown fuse. determined that contaminated fluid had corroded the transmission control module, causing the blown fuses and would need to be replaced at a cost of $3000. the vehicle has 140,000 miles on it therefore, does not qualify for the class action lawsuit settlement or the extension (https://www.ncconsumer.org/news-articles/settlement-reached-in-lawsuit-against-nissan-over-failed-radiators-transmissions.html) nissan motor corporation was aware of the issue with the transmissions oil cooler / radiator assembly yet chose to not address the design defect by issuing a recall or extending the warranty to cover the transmission issue. will not be purchasing another nissan product due to the handling of this issue.
Tla* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving approximately 35 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle did not respond. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and towed to an independent mechanic. the vehicle was later towed to meadowlands nissan in hasbrouck heights, nj where it was diagnosed that the radiator leaked and caused the transmission to fail. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 108,000. updated 09/06/17*lj ..updated 09/11/17 *bf updated 09/20/17*lj *cn consumer stated the vehicle was repaired at an independent shop. transmission failure due to radiator leak. updated 10/4/18*jb
Radiator leaking fluid into transmission, destroyed the transmission. have to purchase a new one and add an external cooling system so it does not happen again. $4800. mileage is 109k. nissan's forced extended warranty expired so no help from them. this is a known issue by nissan due to faulty design. nissan also said "it might happen to certain transmissions", but in fact happens to all xterra transmissions at least for 2006. nissan has had too many engine/drive train issues on the many nissan's i have purchased over the years. i will not be purchasing another nissan.
Transmission failure. i purchased this vehicle with 75,000 miles in october 2015. at 84,000 miles, i noticed a clunk and vehicle slowed all the way down when the automatic transmission was shifting into drive at about 45 miles an hour. i was driving in rush hour traffic and the vehicle slowed way down even though i was trying to accelerate. i was nearly reareneded due to the sudden stall due to the transmission. i took it to the nissan dealership only to find out that the transmission was contaminated with radiator fluids. there's was a deductible of $3,000, what a savings (sarcasm). it was explained that it was a known problem. how could i be responsible for something that easily could have been prevented, especially if nissa knew about this very common problem. nissan really has let me down. i will never buy another nissan unless i am reimbursed for most of whati paid. i am also extremely upset that i very easily could have been in a serious accident due to the sudden failure of the transmission, especially as i was trying to accelerate when just entering the interstate where the speed limit was 70 mph and i suddenly slowed down due to the failing transmission.
The transmission is damaged because of a faulty radiator that leaked coolant into the transmission causing it to fail. my car was a standstill and i was pulling into traffic and my car barely moved causing the oncoming car to swerve and slam his brakes to avoid hitting me. this a a safety concern, especially when you have kids in the car.
While driving, average speed 40-50 mph the vehicle started shaking violently, rpm fluttering. also going from park to drive, it will slam into gear. checking the coolant, it is a milky white color.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 nissan xterra. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle shook violently. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the transmission and radiator failed and needed to be replaced. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 144,000.
I was driving on the interstate when i started hearing a weird sound coming from the car an it started to slow down. i about got hit when all the cars were flying pass me and i was trying to get over. i called the dealer and found out it was the transmission and after almost getting killed all they had to tell me was it wasn't there problem an that it would cost me over 3000 to fix. i just got this car used and still owe over 8000 on it. i cant even drive it. this is so unsafe somebody is going to end up dead because of this problem. if it hasnt already killed some people.
While driving home from work on busy streets in the pittsburgh area, our 2006 nissan xterra lost forward power while navigating a right turn onto another busy street. vehicle never lost electrical power, but had no mechanical power. there were other vehicles driving opposite me as well as vehicles behind me. it was like the vehicle was forced into neutral. i had the vehicle towed to a nissan dealership for them to investigate, they stated that this is a known problem with nissan xterras and frontiers that the radiator communicates with the transmission creating a resultant need for a rebuild of the transmission and replacement of the radiator and coolant flush. for this to occur while driving is dangerous not only to the driver and passenger of the vehicle, but it poses a public risk as well and could have resulted in serious injury/death. nissan usa should be responsible for repairs, but more importantly should be held accountable for such repairs as they constitute a safety concern while driving their vehicles.
My 2006 nissan xterra began shuddering as if the car was riding on rumble strips, while i was trying to maintain speed. when the od is off it does not shudder/rumble. after an inspection and research we determined that coolant was leaking into the transmission fluid and causing the car to shudder. we have taken great care of our car and this is a manufacturer defect in the radiator and it should not be paid for by the consumers!
Check engine light came on, took my truck to the dealer to have a diagnostic check, was told by the service staff that the transmission was contaminated with coolant that had leaked from the radiator. upon further research, i discovered that other nissan makes, models between 2004-2006 had a design flaw which caused the problem in which i now face.. i contacted nissan for some financial assistance on the repair on my transmission, since it appears that the issues related to my problem are from a flaw in the designs of the vehicle. i was told that because my mileage was over a 100,000 miles and past the warranty, that there wasn't anything that could be done as far assisting me with the repairs. i will never buy another nissan product again.... it should be also noted that there was a class action lawsuit again nissan regarding the very problem that i'm faced dealing with...
