Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

Vehicle lost power without warning when stopping at traffic lights, intersections, stop signs or whenever the brake was used to come to a complete stop. engine completely dies but will start again but cannot be used to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse. a transmission specialist (aamco) diagnosed the problem and stated that it was the transmission.

I have never had any problems with this vehicle, but on new year's eve with my family in the car, my 2013 nissan altima stalled while idling at a traffic light. i didn't drive it yesterday (new years day), and brought it to the dealership first thing this morning to have it checked out (jan 2). i was told that i need to replace the transmission! it is shocking to me that a 6 y.o. car -- without any progression of symptoms or any warning lights whatsoever -- would need an entirely new transmission. these seems like a manufacturing problem to me, as a quick google search revealed numerous nissan owners complaining of needing to replace their cvt prematurely.

Transmission slipping when vehicle slows. sometimes the car dies as a result. when trying to accelerate, transmission slips out of gear thus causing a safety hazard such as getting stuck in an intersection or in front of oncoming traffic.

My 2013 nissan altima sl vin: [xxx] is not allowing me to shift when pushing the brake pedal. i have to use a pencil/etc in the shift lock release bypass area everytime. searching the web and it seems that many cars are hobbled by a thin piece of metal on a cheap $3 micro switch in the shifter. bending the small metal tab on the micro switch apparently can fix the issue so it makes contact again. dealers want $700 to replace the entire shifter assembly which is outrageous. youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu7vm2y-7ly and part fix at 8 minute mark. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

My car is a 2013 with less than 40,000 miles. in the matter of 5 days, the transmission has declined significantly. when at a stoplight, my car will shut down completely. i have to park it, turn it off, then crank it back up. when accelerating from a stop, it will stall as if i have it in neutral. even while driving on the interstate, my rpm will be fluctuating, but my acceleration wouldn't change. it would stall at 40mph, make a jerking motion, then pick up a little speed. today it barely went past 20mph. nissan will not take care of this issue, which is clearly their fault! now i have to get a new transmission paid out of my own pocket.

My 2013 nissan altima sv transmission shuttered while on the highway. i was in busy traffic and almost cause an accident. nissan should be ashamed of theirselves....making a vehicle with a transmission like this. and they know the transmission is most important part of the vehicle.

I was abput to make a turn while in middle of busy 4 way intersection when the car turned off and abrubtly stopped in the middle of intersection. i tried to turn car back on but it would not start. bystanders came and helped move car to safe side of street. tried to start car after trying to change gears. then it was moving sluggish . then it drove again. but then it happened again . took to nissan dealer and they said it needed new transmission. this car had only 100,000 miles. i have 4 other nissans that have lasted over 200,000 miles and never had this transmission issue. i have submitted also to kcc campain complaints website.

My 2013 nissan altima sv model had the cvt replaced at 41,289 miles in 2017. two years to the date, at 75,000 miles 2019 my cvt transmission is out again. nissan via verbal told me that the warranty on the replaced cvt is 15,000 or 1year. my nissan altima 2013. as i was driving the vehicle it was loosing motion .when driving and accelerating the car it wouldnt go up the the speedometer speed, it seems like it was stalling. when the vehicle was at the stop light or stop sign and i let go of the break, the car wouldnt go into "gear" . i had to press on the gas pedal and suddenly the car will move but with an awful "jerk".that problem was constant. when backing up of my drive way the same thing would happen, i will put it in "gear" and the car wouldn't back-up at all, i had to press the gas after 5 seconds and again suddenly will jerk into reverse. the car actually stopped in different occasions in the middle of the street with heavy traffic in a busy intersection. this is a big safety concern for the driver and passengers inside an unsafe vehicle that just "wont move". another concern would be to "public safety" as other drivers will have to maneuver around the 'stalled" vehicle. i did contacted nissan usa and they issue a case number on my complain. my vehicle is now at the dealership. i did my research and the same issue has been going on with nissan cvt transmissions, that in 2010** nissan extended their cvt ( continuously variable transmission) equipped vehicles ( 2003- 2010) with a 10 year / 120,000 miles limited warranty. im 100% sure that nissan will make their 2011 - 2013 altimas part of their commitment to their client base, and add their 10 year / 120,000 miles limited warranty extension to these previous models.

At 68830 miles the transmission went out on this car. terrible.

Randomly my airbag light came on. but no airbags ever deployed. also i beliveve my years transmission has a recall on it. every now and again it downshifts while i am accelerating on the highway and it terrifies me. i would appreciate feeling safe in my investment

Car will not shift our of park to reverse while in stationary mode.

The car has had no previous issues with the transmission - note that the check engine light never came on. i was driving on the highway and my transmission started to stutter and the rpm's would momentarily rev very high. after driving for several minutes of this, the car started to decelerate - eventually getting down to about 25 mph. at this point, the car never regained speed. after getting the car towed to the local dealership, it was found that the transmission was damaged and needed to be replaced.

The car would not accelerate from a stop light. it would just do low-rpm revs then eventually crawl then rev super high and accelerate super fast. the transmission would take about 10 seconds to engage at every light and once it did it would lurch forward. stalled 3 times. 2013 nissan altima with exactly 85,500 miles. called nissan and they said the know of no recalls or issues with the transmission and it is no longer under warranty but to take it to a nissan dealer to have it looked at. check engine light finally came on with code p0776, and pending codes of p 0776 p0965 p2813.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while parking the vehicle, the transmission failed and the contact had to push the vehicle into the parking space. the contact also noticed fluid on the ground. the vehicle was not towed to a dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 37097905. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 81,000.

Transmission went out at 80679 miles.

Engine stalls while driving due torque stalling of the engine. can could cause an accident. this has been a known issue of this make and model cvt. then engine stalling and shutting down occurs at any speed.

Gear gets stuck too often to move. cheap parts and is risky like on a parking stop trying to stop and your gear wont budge. my 2013 altima transmission has always been vibrating too heavily, between 1500-2500 rpm in cold and exteremely hot weather situations, ever since i bought this vehicle (since feb, 2014). now the transmission completely failed and they are asking 4k to replace it.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle did not accelerate without warning. the vehicle was taken to torre nissan (760-777-8999, located at 79125 highway 111, la quinta, ca 92253) where nothing was done. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the contact inquired about technical service bulletin number: 16-102 and was informed to contact the manufacturer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. the contact was referred to nhtsa. the failure mileage was approximately 104,000.

The car will not shift out of "park" without popping the access cover on console & pushing down on the transmission release button with a long screwdriver. starting happening at approx 35k miles.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the transmission warning indicator illuminated and it felt as if the transmission was slipping. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 66,000.

The headlights on my altima are really dim.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the rpms were going up and down sporadically. while driving 50 mph, the transmission slipped and the vehicle jerked. the vehicle would not shift over into the next gear. the transmission was replaced in september of 2016 as part of an unknown recall repair that was performed under an extended warranty at griffin nissan (1780 e broad ave, rockingham, nc 28379, (910) 997-5516). the most recent failure occurred around august 12, 2019. the manufacturer stated that they could not assist because the mileage exceeded the warranty limit of 100,000. the manufacturer provided a case number and promised to call the contact back. the failure mileage was 134,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle decelerated and stalled without warning. when the contact shifted into neutral and restarted the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. when the shifter was placed in drive, the vehicle stalled. also, the transmission made a noise and the vehicle stalled once it was warmed up. the vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. the failure mileage was 106,000.

The shift gear does not move to drive, reverse or anywhere for that matter once its in park. someone had to show me how to remove the plastic cap on the shift gear lock & stick my key in there to get the shift gear to move. i have to do this every single time the vehicle is set to park & the vehicle is stationary.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while at a stop sign, the vehicle stalled twice and was able to be restarted. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to nissan of athens (located at 4735 atlanta hwy, bldg. c, athens, ga 30606, (706) 410-1914) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 112,000.

Cvt is jerking and the recall doesn't extend to cars that the problem mostly effects.

My car will not shift out of park- there are hundreds and hundreds of complaints in online forums i have sifted thru with the same exact problem with the same year as mine

When i make a stop and then i leave the transmission fails and the car is very slow but the rpm goes up very high

The 2nd time in less than 2 years that the cvt valve went out making the vehicle suddenly jerk forward and backwards even with the brakes on and then suddenly lose power. wethis is a hazardous situation as my car had to be towed yesterday after suddenly stopping at a busy intersection. last time it happened on a busy bridge. this is a known problem with the 2013 altimas but unfortunately i've just become aware of this. people could die.

My car was driving perfectly fine in the morning. car started fine later in the afternoon. it started jerking and not accelerating smoothly as i pulled out to the street. then it stalled at the street. restarted the car and everything seemed normal until i put it in gear. after only a few feet it stalled again. it now stalls in any gear besides park and neutral. had to push the car off the road and have it towed. another bad cvt transmission. nissan should be ashamed. selling these cars with major mechanical failure and poor warranty. had to extended warranty on previous model years because of failures. should be a recall. this is happening to to many people. last nissan i will own.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 65 mph, the transmission completely failed. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was towed to nissan of sacramento (2820 auburn blvd, sacramento, ca 95821, (916) 604-4095) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 107,953.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving various speeds, the vehicle sputtered and a thud noise was present when the transmission switched gears. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the battery, but the failures continued. the failures eventually worsened and the vehicle randomly sputtered and stalled. on several occasions, the vehicle accelerated on its own. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was damaged due to a faulty solenoid and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. don williams nissan (310 western blvd, jacksonville, nc) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 84,000.

The 7 inch central audio-visual and navigation unit periodically changes radio stations, crashes the navigation display, or crashes entirely going blank, and may or may not ask for sd card upon reboot. on one occasion the accelerator also stuck requiring the car to taken to the side of the road and turned off. cannot be sure if the two events were related but they happened simultaneously. in the last six months the misbehavior of the central display unit has gotten worse and worse. nissan dealer and national support are unable to find the problem or being willing to fix it. there is no escalation procedure to factory engineering and maintenance support. they will not take the elementary step to reflash the firmware or being willing to change out the unit. multiple examples of this problem are reported online in nissan's owner portal for this model year and the next. despite being originally told that nissan is trying to track cars with this known problem that nissan refuses to address and leaving a potential safety problem unresolved.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while shifting gears, the vehicle hesitated before accelerating to the next gear. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was taken to cannon nissan of blytheville (305 n service rd, blytheville, ar 72315, (866) 433-4281) where it was diagnosed that the valve body assembly and transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 36120298. no further assistance was provided. the failure mileage was 89,000.

After driving on the highway for 35-40 minutes my car won't accelerate when i have the gas pedal all the way to the floor and my sped starts dropping even when cruse control is set.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. when the vehicle was started, the transmission would not immediately shift into gear. after shifting into drive and reverse, the vehicle would not accelerate. the cause of the failures was not determined. herb chambers nissan (273 turnpike rd, westborogh, ma) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the contact indicated that the vehicle was previously serviced for the same failures and the transmission control module was reprogrammed. the failure mileage was 74,000.

After driving at highway speeds for 25/30 minutes and stopping the car won't accelerate with the gas pedal pushed all the way for 10 to 15 seconds. on 6/20/2019 i stopped at a light, the car wouldn't accelerate and then started jerking in a manner that seemed as if the car was in the wrong gear. after this happened the check engine light came on. the code reads as a faulty solenoid in the transmission.after taking it to a nissan dealer i was told i need a new transmission. this problem is similar to a recall that was issued in 2017 with the gas pedal and transmission acting messed up. if i stop the car and turn it off then immediately back on the problem disappears. thus is a safety hazard because i can't always restart the car in a safe location but if i don't i could cause an accident when my car won't accelerate properly. because of the similarities to the last recall and the fact that the problem is not consistent i believe this is a problem with the computer.

Transmission started slipping, lurching, going in and out of gear for several months and now is almost non drivable. dealership says it is out of warranty and it will cost $3,500 to fix.

Vehicle stopped at stop light and stalled. restarted vehicle and put into drive and stalled again. did this 6 times. contacted towing service and towed a block away to a service station. they told me that i needed to go to a nissan dealer, then had vehicle towed to matt castrucci nissan. where the vehicle is currently located. the service tech. stated the transmission needs to be replaced along with the battery. the vehicle has 88,000 miles and have read that nissan extended warranty to 120,000, but that may vehicle is not included in this. why not? they stated that the vin # was not included in the extended warranty. that makes no sense, should include all 2013 nissan regardless of vin#. the vehicle is registered under my wife's name. Shift solenoid has small metal plate that bends over time and loses contact the shifter. this makes car impossible to shift from park without depressing the shift lock using a small flat head screwdriver. after discovering fix, i dismantled the shifter and bent the solenoid plate back to the original position but a few months later, the metal plate has bent again. this small metal plate seems quite thin and flimsy. search the web, lots of people have had this issue occur to their altimas.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the check engine and slip warning indicators remained illuminated when the vehicle was parked or when shifting out of drive. also, while driving highway speeds, the vehicle lost power, the transmission gears failed to change over, and the vehicle shut down. the vehicle was coasted off the road and parked. balise nissan of cape cod (322 falmouth rd, hyannis, ma 02601, (508) 815-4010) was contacted and indicated that an unknown manufacturer campaign regarding the reprogramming of the continuously variable transmission (cvt) failed. the dealer recommended that the vehicle be diagnosed to determine if the cvt needed to be replaced. the vehicle was unable to be driven and the manufacturer did not volunteer to have the vehicle towed. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 122,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle would not move out of park occasionally. the contact had to use a small pin to unlock the transmission and drive the vehicle. the dealer was not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was made of the failure and transferred the contact to the nhtsa hotline. the failure mileage was 79,000.

The problem started a few months ago with an occasional shuddering of the car and surging of rpms. this typically happened when i accelerated over 60 mph, but also happened seemingly randomly when maintaining speed. over the last 3 weeks, the shuddering became more violent, more frequent, and less related to accelerating, just happening generally when driving 45+ mph. one week ago, i was driving home from a work trip and the check engine light came on, the car became extremely loud when driving, and i was having trouble accelerating (5/30/2019). the code was p0841, transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch. after reading about the code online, i was hopeful that the repair would be minimal, maybe just draining and refilling tranny fluid or replacing the sensor/switch on the transmission. however, within 2 days i realized the car was undrivable and immediately took it to the transmission shop. the owner looked up altima recalls and lawsuits, thought my car was covered by the extended warranty (unfortunately, my newer 2013 model was not), and did not touch it. on my drive to the nissan dealer, i could barely accelerate, could not keep speed, the entire car was shaking violently, and the noise was extremely loud ' which was very dangerous to myself and other drivers on the road. given the diagnosis of near complete failure, i am fortunate it did not fail while driving. i brought it to the dealer for an official diagnosis, in order to have it in nissan's system as backup for a formal complaint/class action lawsuit. after receiving an outrageous quote for a replacement transmission, i had the car towed back to the transmission shop for rebuilding (6/10/2019). the car is 6 years old, had a single previous owner, has lived in a garage, and has been well maintained.

My transmission is not working it has cause i as well as my fiance to have to miss work sometimes because of the cvt the car shakes and shutters and cuts off this happened to me while on the highway and my fiance where we could have been hit and ended up in a bad accident.

5 days ago while driving on a freeway during rush hour my car started stuttering while driving. when i pressed on the accelerator after coming to a stop, the car jerked and stalled while in traffic. when 5 miles from home i was stopped at a red light the car engine died. after restarting my car when i put my car into gear the engine would die. while in the left lane i sat there trying to get my car to go into gear without the engine dying. two guys helped to move it off of the road and i had to have it towed home. it's now at the dealership's service center.

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. vehicle shifting into gear erratically, coming to a stop the vehicle started to jerk, vehicle turned off with no warning nearly left stranded, vehicle towed to residence, manufacturer not contacted, $2000 for refurbished/rebuilt transmission while driving in traffic at a low speed and coming to a stop, the vehicle started to jerk and stalled. there was no warning prior to or after the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle however, there was no forward mobility to the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the residence. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. neither a dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 113,000. "piir = y". ah

While driving our 13 nissan altima south on hwy 218/27 suddenly the car was stalling and lunging and we lost all power while driving in 4 lane traffic on may 13, 2019. while trying to depress the accelerator there was nothing we could not accelerate or anything. this was extremely dangerous situation as we were trying to cross on coming traffic the vehicle would lunge or not accelerate at all. we could have easily caused a collision due to the lunging and stalling of the transmission. we took our vehicle to authorized nissan dealer deery brothers in west burlington, ia and was diagnosed as needing the transmission replaced. this replacement will cost $4,500. our altima has 85,000 miles. i believe this vehicle has nissans cvt that has malfunctioned is various other nissan models. hopefully this situation will be remedied by a recall.

The vehicle has around 57,500 miles, was bought certified pre-owned at a nissan dealership in 2016, and has only been serviced by a nissan dealership since purchase. the vehicle failed to properly accelerate after a stoplight. the vehicle was stopped at this light and could only accelerate to about 12 mph afterwards regardless of how hard i pushed the gas pedal. i tried stopping and shifting to park then back to drive, yet the problem persisted. this is incredibly dangerous as it happened without warning. no lights came on and no alerts populated on my dashboard screen. this has happened multiple times before, and it seems to be a common problem among altima owners. this seems to result from a defective continuously variable transmission (cvt), and the failure to properly accelerate will eventually lead to complete transmission failure. hopefully, this will not happen when i am on a busy road or interstate as this is immensely dangerous and possibly fatal.

Transmission fail. my 2013 nissan altima started shuddering at acceleration for few days then suddenly started to hesitate and go into limp mode. the car would not move when pressing the pedal or in reverse. this has caused a safety hazard in the middle of the highway when the car suddenly lost its power to move as if it's in coma. two mechanic shops said the cvt transmission system needs replacement. costs 3500$. cannot afford it of course and the car itself now is not worth this amount.

My nissan altima 2013 died in the parking lot of a highway rest area. the nissan mechanist later reported the cvt got mechanical problem and has to be replaced.
