We have classified the 127 complaints from 2013 Nissan Altima about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL 2 12V/24V/48V BATTERY 1

Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2013 Nissan Altima

I was driving the car and it started stuttering and it cut right off in the middle of driving .i then restarted my car and it did the same thing. the battery light came right on and engine light as well. i parked it as best as i could , and i tried starting it a 3rd time it started and i put it in reverse and it cut right off.

My 2013 nissan altima sl vin: [xxx] is not allowing me to shift when pushing the brake pedal. i have to use a pencil/etc in the shift lock release bypass area everytime. searching the web and it seems that many cars are hobbled by a thin piece of metal on a cheap $3 micro switch in the shifter. bending the small metal tab on the micro switch apparently can fix the issue so it makes contact again. dealers want $700 to replace the entire shifter assembly which is outrageous. youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu7vm2y-7ly and part fix at 8 minute mark. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Head light low beams are extremely dim. even, i cannot see 2 meters in front of the car at nights. and this problem is not related with the light bulbs. it is related with the headlight projector housing (confirmed from different auto shops and internet complaints) that is losing its effectiveness by the time. also, repairing this problem is very costly. basically, both headlight assemblies have to be changed. we, as altima owners, are waiting for the recall action specifically for this problem from the nissan company. unfortunately, it is very common safety problem among 2013 -2015 altimas.

Factory lighting is dim, cannot see at night. the projection is not strong enough for nyc night time. i need to use high beams and those arent even that good. it is not the light bulb

The 7 inch central audio-visual and navigation unit periodically changes radio stations, crashes the navigation display, or crashes entirely going blank, and may or may not ask for sd card upon reboot. on one occasion the accelerator also stuck requiring the car to taken to the side of the road and turned off. cannot be sure if the two events were related but they happened simultaneously. in the last six months the misbehavior of the central display unit has gotten worse and worse. nissan dealer and national support are unable to find the problem or being willing to fix it. there is no escalation procedure to factory engineering and maintenance support. they will not take the elementary step to reflash the firmware or being willing to change out the unit. multiple examples of this problem are reported online in nissan's owner portal for this model year and the next. despite being originally told that nissan is trying to track cars with this known problem that nissan refuses to address and leaving a potential safety problem unresolved.

I was parked for about 5 mins with engine running when i noticed the display with gas/odometer/speed turned off. tried turning on/off but still won't light up. checked the headlights and signals and they worked. just scary that i'm practically driving blind coz i can't see my speed. also, can't tell how much gas i have left. the car has about 104k miles. it's barely 7 years old and a computer problem seems a bit too early. it was pre-owned so i'm not sure if it had previous problems.

Vehicle stopped at stop light and stalled. restarted vehicle and put into drive and stalled again. did this 6 times. contacted towing service and towed a block away to a service station. they told me that i needed to go to a nissan dealer, then had vehicle towed to matt castrucci nissan. where the vehicle is currently located. the service tech. stated the transmission needs to be replaced along with the battery. the vehicle has 88,000 miles and have read that nissan extended warranty to 120,000, but that may vehicle is not included in this. why not? they stated that the vin # was not included in the extended warranty. that makes no sense, should include all 2013 nissan regardless of vin#. the vehicle is registered under my wife's name. Driving on an uphill street car would not go and i would have to push hard down on gas i had my son in the back seat i then pulled over to set car at park and turned off let it sit for about five mins turned car back on put it on reverse and it went forward i set it pack to park gear and then back to reverse and it complied not the first time now it's just more common and this time it freaked me out it wasn't a little burp as the other times had car for only about 6 going on 7 months and i restricted l myself from driving my own car that i just purchased to then being told transmission failing and 8 recalls

My lights real dim at night so i replace them with new led lights and they still looks dim i can't see nothing this is real safety issue especially when you got kids

Can not move the gear shift out of park at times, i have to use the gear shift release mechanism. the gear shift will move sometimes but more often than not. my headlights are so dim i can't drive my car at night because of it. i have installed brighter lights and that was waste of money because they still don't shine brighter.

Unable to release vehicle from p position by pressing the brake. the bypass button has to be pressed in order to release.

After purchasing this vehicle brand new, first owner in september 2013, 4 months later the left fog light went out did not think anything of it. two months later the right head light went out. thought it was weird but did not stress myself about it. a year later the right rear light only works when you tap it. now i am driving all the lights are out from the car. no brake lights no park lights no lights. took my vehicle to tire kingdom to change bulbs only to find out the new bulbs are not working either and the vehicle has a n electrical problem. never did understand why drivers behind me would honk their horns at me or be flashing me with their high beam lights. nissan needs to fix this issue as well as their air conditioning problem. the vehicle only gets cool when the vehicle is in motion. you cannot have the a/c on when being stationary the a/c only produces heat during that time.

Takata recall. one recall performed, second airbag light shows on dash soon after first airbag replaced. diagnostics on november 30 shows all electronics problems with driver side airbag. cost estimated minimum from $651+ tax to $3427.92+ tax. this failure is not due to misuse. it is a recall problem. see attached diagnostics and repair estimate attached. request this be replaced under recall.

I was turning right to park my 2013 nissan altima and i pushed on the brake to slow down the car to stop and the car suddenly accelerated and jumped over the concrete curb stop. it continued to run upslope to the bushes and over three big rocks while i was trying to avoid hitting the fence in the front and braking it. i continued to press on the brake and the car continued to drive forward and i kept turning the wheel to the right to avoid a fence. the car ran over the curb stop of another parking space about five spaces on the right. the bolt in the concrete stop punctured my oil pan and the rocks ribbed off the plastic shields underneath. i was finally able to stop the car by pumping the brake and wind up in the opposite direction. i checked my foot was still on the brake. my car had approximately 43000 miles on the odometer. this happened at the parking lot of bertelson memorial park in el dorado hills in california. we believed that there was a computer failure that caused the acceleration of the car while i was turning right and braking and tried to park. according to one of the expert, an electrical engineer who has studied sudden acceleration in cars for over 20 years, stated that "if you're turning into a parking space, you have a lot of stress on the front drive system, since everything is based on running through the computer, including sensors on your drive systems, any one of those could carry onto the system, carry on to the on-board computer and attack it." we felt very unfair to pay for the repairs for the defective product.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate over 60 mph. the contact also stated that the engine failed to start properly. the contact stated that the engine stalled and the battery had to be jumpstarted. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called benton nissan of hoover at (205) 938-6103 (located at 1640 montgomery hwy, hoover, al 35216) and was informed that the failure was due to a faulty key fob. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 100,000.

Instrumental gauges flickers and sometimes staying off for a second or two causing the vehicle to jerk with power lose while driving on the highway. radio will also lunimate and die when this happens. current vehicle has around 50k and i have replace battery, +\-battery terminal and alternator to see if this correct the problem, but this still happens!!! also all the instrumental gauge will reset its self when this happens!!!

My 2013 nissan altima 3.5sv , the gear shifter will not come out of park , this is a safety issue and nissan refuses to take care of it. they offered a 60/40 split but this clearly being a safety issue should be issued as a recall or taken care of 100% by the manufacturer. this is not safe if you can't get you care out of park, nissan knows of the issue but continues to ignoring the problem.

The gear/shift got stuck at parking. every time i drive, i have to use a screw driver to manially release the shift lock

As i was driving my 2013 nissan altima with 35k miles on it, i came to a stoplight at a busy intersection and my car cut off completely without any indication that something was wrong. i was not able to put my foot on the brakes, i could not move my steering wheel, it just cut off. i was able to cut my car back on, however whenever i shifted my gear into drive it cut off again. i had my car towed to the nissan dealership, and they stated they could not find the issue but reprogrammed my cvt since there was a recall issued for my car. they determined that after driving it for 25 minutes that day and 25 minutes the next that the cvt reprogramming could have been the solution to the problem but to return it to the dealer if it happened again. 3 days later my car began shaking and stalling very roughly while in motion and again cut off in the middle of the road while in drive. this time my young son was in the car with me, and him and i could have both been harmed or caused an accident and harmed someone else. this is unacceptable that nissan has not recalled these vehicles or the car has been returned to customers without a solution to the problem.

Car will not release from park unless you press on the brake release button. this happened as my car reached 65k miles. this could be a huge issue and safety if someone was to be stranded out somewhere and they are h able to leave because there car will not come out of park. this problem is affecting a lot of vehicles coming out of nissan.

We haven't driven the car in like 10 days and tried starting it and it wouldn't start. got the car jump started and noticed that every time i turned the steering wheel the car bogged down the navigation system shuts off and the steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. also the same exact thing happens when i put the car in reverse and turn the steering wheel, the navigation system and the back up camera goes completely dark.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. the vehicle was taken to nissan 112 dealer (730 medford ave, patchogue, ny 11772, (631) 651-1987) where it was diagnosed that the battery sensor needed to be reset. the battery sensor was reset; however, the air bag warning indicator illuminated again. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the battery sensor was reset a second time; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the occupant detection system needed to be reset and the front driver's and passenger side sensors needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

Complaint: no warning lights came on during transmission failure. 2013 nissan altima bought new experienced malfunction on nov 10, 2017 while stopped at intersection in downtown baltimore traffic. prior to and during malfunction no indicators on dashboard lit up to alert us to any problem. after car was towed to nearby nissan dealership, dealership determined transmission would need to be replaced. however dealership's service dept could not explain why the transmission failure did not trigger any warning lights. the day before the malfunction, nov 9th, nissan of richmond had performed the 48 months scheduled maintenance ' during which they also did a pc490 recall, referring to it as an 'altima cvt software diagnostic update' and describing it as a software update for the transmission ' allowing their computer to interact better with the transmission computer. conditions: night time, below freezing (mid 20's), had just taken off-ramp to downtown after 3 hours of interstate driving averaging 65-70 mph on interstate and 25-30 mph downtown. while approaching intersection, car bucked, then stalled and gas pedal failed to work. turned car off and back on. car limped another 3 or 4 blocks, then stopped completely and had to be towed. history: altima bought new, all vehicle maintenance was performed at recommended times/intervals with nissan service dept, warning light malfunction and transmission replacement occurred at 39,848 miles.

Drivers electronic door unlock/lock switch has disconnected from the door lock ability, unable to safely exit vehicle without rolling down the window to unlock manually from outside he car. makes it unsafe to exit in case of an emergancy

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. whether the vehicle was shifted into park or drive, it would experience a loss of power. the contact stated that the vehicle operated normally while in neutral. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. the dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 66,000.

The nissan altima 2013, driver side door handle breaks, trapping individual in car causing a safety issue in any urgent or emergency situation. car was stationary when complaint happened. frequent occurrence with thousands or models 2011-2015 as indicated by consumer reports. consideration for recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving 55 mph, the vehicle sputtered and stalled without warning. the contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated after the vehicle stalled and remained lit. the vehicle was taken to nissan 422 of limerick (55 autopark blvd, limerick, pa 19468, (610) 495-1856), but it had not yet been diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 94,458.

I tried to start my car and the onboard computer screen say no key detected, i have the key in my hand and still it will not start, i can unlock the doors, trunk etc. fine, i even went and bought the same exact new battery for the key fog and the problem persist, i went online and look up nissan owners with similar problem with nissan altima key fog problem and it seem like a common issue, but surprise that there is no recall on the issue, everybody i know that owns a nissan told me there is time they be driving and the onboard computer state no key detected, thank god i don't live i a remote location or else i would be stranded, online everyone that had the problem had to end up paying $500 or more to fix the issue, which i feel is a defect in nissan engine control unit system, i contact the dealership that i bought my nissan altima from and they wanted to charge me over #500 total to fix the issue, i think it is a scam, i found a work around the issue but it is just not right that they know the engine control unit has a problem and the refuse to address the issue, except leave the customer with a new bill or stranded

Electrical issue, my car wouldn't start saying incorrect key, when i opened the hood the battery post had completely burned off, wires was burnt, and battery exploded. the fusible link for the terminal breaker for the battery was also burnt, every now and then when i went to start my car it would say key not detectable or wrong key id. i thought the battery in the key probe was going out replaced it and the problem still was present. i have 2 co-workers and there vehicle are doing the same thing one has a 2014 and the other is a 2016 brand new had less than 6 months. i was told by the mechanic this has been going on and my vehicle almost caught on fire.

I bought my car in april 2016 i've had nothing but issues it chugs all the time on highway/city/county roads, and while turning left and right with cruze set or not. every time i get in my car and try to shift it down from park it don't always shift or if i try shifting up it's like it sticks it has been fixed once already, when the heated seats are on low or high setting if left on longer than 5 minuets it gets burning hot. the steering wheel is also super loose my car has 82,000 miles on it i've had it for a year and a half and i've had so many issues including the air conditioning marquart motors out of chippewa falls wi refuses to return my calls (i bought the car from them they are useless and unhelpful ) i have a extended warranty as well so most repairs are covered thank god but won't be for long. it's very frustrating that i paid 23,000 for a car that has so many issues i really just wish i could give it back so scared to have my children in it and i shouldn't have to feel that way. alsothere are 3 or four recalls and i can't seem to ever get it in for repair because our nissan dealer is always so booked or don't have the parts to fix it till days or weeks later.

Shifter needs to be replaced a/c compressor needs replaced seat belt light/air bag light issue

After a few years of normal operation the low-beam headlights are no longer effective. they are too dim to rely on while driving on dark roads/highways. must use high-beams for proper visibility. replacing bulbs does not help.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while exiting the vehicle, the contact heard a loud pop sound. afterwards, the interior handles on all four doors were unable to open the doors. while attempting to start the vehicle, the contact stated that the vehicle would not start and noticed a lot of corrosion on the battery terminals. the battery had been changed out three times, but the failure was still being experienced. the dealer (town center nissan, 2310 barrett lakes blvd nw, kennesaw, ga 30144) informed the contact that the door handle failure "could be a safety risk". the dealer stated that the reason the vehicle failed to start was due to corrosion of the battery terminals. both repairs would be at the contact's expense. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures. the vehicle was not repaired and continued to experience both failures. the failure mileage was 120,000.

The nissan altima starts through a technology called "push to start". when i get into my vehicle, the dashboard says "key id incorrect". this started happening shortly after my car was programmed for an airbag recall at the dealership. the car will not start since you need the key to start the car. there is no manual way to start the car, and if the key is not recognized for too long the car has stopped driving while in motion. lastly, the car will not lock when you are inside and the key id is not being recognized. if you are in a dangerous situation this can be problematic.

2013 nissan altima 2.5s was serviced on december 19, 2016 at planet nissan 5850 centennial center blvd. las vegas, nv 89149 dealer performed r1609 ocs recall & pc490 cvt reprogram recall. during these process some electrical items damage. now cvt (continues variable transmission) is failing. on april 6, 2017 took vehicle to autonation nissan las vegas 5800 w. sahara ave the service consultant said cvt is bad and needs to be replace but nissan do not want to pay. vehicle drives but when you reach 25-35 miles per hour it jerks, also 65 miles per hour it jerks then it looses power, vehicle comes to a stop and it does not move. this vehicle is not safe to be on the road. nissan needs to correct this issue before somebody gets injured.

Engine start problems! when i push the engine start button, the engine crank and start engine. and the dashboard screen are all renew like a factory reset.

I drove my car on february 28 from my garage in my house in bolton, ma to lexington ma at 9 am. upon starting, i noticed a slight strange smell. it was a bit like oil or maybe chemical smells but i am not sure as i had not smelled this before. i rolled down the windows as i drove to clear it and kept an eye on the temperature gauge, which was normal. after 5 mins, the smell cleared, the heat temp was normal and i drove for about 40 mins while talking on my bluetooth. i parked in front of grace chapel in lexington on the street and as i pulled to a stop to park on the street in front of the church, i noticed some smoke. i immediately shut off the car. within moments there were flames and i called 911 as i got out. i had only time to get my purse, my bag and the food in the trunk i was bringing for the pantry and moved away. within 3 minutes, it was engulfed about 30% up to the windshield as the first police arrived. he moved the car parked right in front of mine, thank god. two minutes later firemen came and about two minutes later they had water on the car but it was fully engulfed. they were able to keep the damage to only affect two other cars parked in the parking lot next to the street across from my car, separated by a sidewalk. the vehicle has been meticulously maintained by us. no accidents. no mechanical problems. all recalls followed. i drive normally. oil changes are done regularly. no mechanical work has been done on the car. there are recalls on the v6 2013 altimas for possible fire issues. mine is a v4. here's one website but if you google 2013 altima fires, you will find others. http://www.automotive-fleet.com/news/story/2015/10/nissan-expands-2016-maxima-recall.aspx had i been trapped, i may have died before they got me out. please protect others from this scary tragedy. I have been having an issue with the gear lock not allowing me to get out of park. i have push to start and my car starts with no problems. this has happened more than once and the only way to get the gears to move is by pushing down the gear release lock. i do it have a video but there are complaints of thi and videos on youtube!

Shift locks in park leaving me in a non-operating situation at a gas station. luckily i had a screw driver in my glove box was able to locate and push down on the "shift release" button allowing me to move into drive. since the incident, the shift consistently locks in park position and @38k, have surpassed the warranty with nissan. unfortunately nissan doesn't sell the solenoid separately and had to purchase the full assembly @$451.90 + $250 labor. since 1990, i've consistently held onto my car for 8 - 10 years averaging 150k mi. per vehicle. i really hope this flags the attention and fits the protocol of a recall.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that the spare tire was faulty. the dealer was contacted several times, but the contact was unable to receive a response to determine if a replacement could be provided. in addition, the center console was unstable in the vehicle, the instrument panel/cluster shorted several times, and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. the contact was uncertain of what the dealer diagnosed and repaired. the contact no longer owned the vehicle. the vin and failure mileage were not available. the manufacturer was not notified of the failures.

I am unable to shift car out of park without defeating the interlock. i have to use something like a screw driver to push something in the small hole next to the shifter every time i need to put the car in gear. suspect the switch or solenoid or wiring connected to brake pedal failed. this happens whenever the car is in park and not moving.

I was in an accident and the air bags did not deploy. my children and i were injured. i serviced my car at nissan for the airbag recall twice. i received a recall from nhtsa and nissan wouldn't comply. every time i've taken my car for the brake pads to be serviced i only need rotors never brake pads! the driver side door handle broke for no reason what so ever this car is a clunker!

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled. in addition, the vehicle failed to shift out of the drive gear. the contact, who had an infant present, had to engage the emergency hazard lights and received help pushing the vehicle to the side of the road. the contact placed a screwdriver in the gear shifter to help change gears, and was able to restart the vehicle on the third attempt. the vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic who determined that the shifter cylinder was fractured and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not under warranty. the failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 nissan altima. the contact stated that there was a strong hesitation and the vehicle stalled several times. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was not available.

I bought a nissan altima 2013. back in february the car would start and would shut off when i put it on drive and reverse. this happen in the middle of the street. i took it to the dealership and left it there for a month and they still were not able to tell me what was wrong with the car. even though a technician duplicated the problem the car computer would still say the car is fine .i took it to get a second opinion from a nissan master technician and they weren't able to tell me what was wrong with the car. after about a month the car started working again. i was told by a 3rd place i took the car that it might be a sensor issue and the car literally decides when's going to work and not and that this is an on going issue iwth the altima. a couple of days ago the car would took off with me at a red light when i just tap the gas. i was at a red light the light turn green i tp the gas the rpms jumped ad the accelarated in high speeds. also the car would not go forward or backwards after i put it in reverse immidiately, it would stay idel for about 5 ten seconds than go. the nissan dealership has not been able to diagnose that anything is wrong with my car he computers keeps saying the cr is fine. i have told nissan headquaters that i feel unsafe when i'm driving the car. looking online i see that this a on going defect with the altima 2013 that nissan refuses to address. i have called nissan and told them that this car is defective and im starting to feel its putting my life and someone s with this carelse in danger and there response was basically tough luck. right now the car is cranking but not start . i feel like nissan did a poor job with this car and it should have been sold

Airbag light has been going off n on w no passenger...scared somethings not gonna work in the event of an accident. car jerking on hghwy not accelerating ..n loss of power mid drive or turn..i have kids n this is becoming a death trap..w no ck engine light .

Intermittently the car is completely shutting off while driving on the road. the engine starts vibrating while slowing down or braking and turns off. it will start immediately7-8 times in a row but will turn turn off as soon as the transmission is put into drive. this has happened 5-6 times in the past 2 weeks. we have taken this to the nissan dealer only for them to tell us they can't fix it because there are no codes showing up! our concern is the number of other people who have complained about the same issue and there is no recall for whatever is causing this.
