Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2008 Nissan Altima

My 2008 nissan altima coupe has a melting dashboard. it has become incredibly sticky and is not able to be cleaned because of this. the "sheen" that is on the dashboard now causes a horrific reflection on the windshield reducing visibility drastically and causing a hazard while driving. contact with nissan has been completed and no action is being taken at this time. there are numerous reports of other owners having the same problem.

The dashboard in my 2008 nissan altima coupe is giving off a strong chemical smell, is very sticky to the touch, and is so shiny that it generates an intense glare on the windshield when in direct sunlight. the windshield glare is a huge safety hazard that is only getting worse -- it used to be that i could get by with wearing sunglasses but now the glare is so intense that even with polarized sunglasses on, i have to lean this way and that in order to see what's in front of me. if i were to lose my sunglasses while out and about, i would absolutely be unable to drive until after sunset. it's unsafe for me and everyone on the road to operate a vehicle with such bad windshield obstruction. any bugs or debris that come in contact with the areas of the dashboard that are melting instantly become stuck. it looks a lot like a tar pit and if you touch it, a tar-like substances comes off and is very hard to remove from your skin. the fumes it gives off are nauseating and seem to make the windshield foggy. when trying to clean the weird chemical fog off, i have to be extra careful not to let the cleaning rags touch any part of the dash because it will literally pull the rag apart, leaving behind distracting pieces of cloth all over the dash. i asked nissan consumer affairs to help remedy my situation but they refused to help because the vehicle is no longer in warranty. it seems that as time goes on and the weather gets hotter, the dashboard only gets worse and worse. i cannot afford to fix the problem on my own (the dealership estimates that the repair will cost over $2,000) but i also don't feel safe driving in the sunlight.

As i was driving home on the interstate my 2008 nissan altima transmission made a loud noise and lost drive, i had to swerve to avoid getting run over by a 18 wheeler . i just made to the right shoulder . i was right next to an exit, the motor would rev but the car would not go more the 5 mph. nissan says my car is not covered under warranty i had to pay 3000.00 to have the transmission replaced.

The dashboard has a defect from glue surfacing to top and causing glare and sticky, shiny that reflects on window a hazard while driving. nissan will not pay and not a recall. this really sad mistake and no one will take responsibility. please look into this.

Dashboard has begun to melt, leaving a sticky residue that is highly reflective. in direct sunlight, it will reflect onto windshield causing reduced visibility. residue will not wipe off. attracts loose fibers, dirt, and debris. inner dashboard toward airbag and steering wheel is also pitting due to a tacky texture from melting....updated 07/13/16 *bf

Dashboard has outlining lines around the defroster that are tacky other spots on the dash also what gases are being released from this melting dashboard is it harmful i contacted nissan they are not helpful sorry it's out of warranty i noticed the damage about a year ago spring of 2015 it is growing slowly on my dash

I purchased a 2008 nissan altima in march 2015 and shortly after that i noticed the dashboard appeared to be melting.

Dash melting and cracking

I bought a 2008 nissan altman coupe , in october 2014. my dashboard has started to melt in several areas. not only is there a glare on the windshield caused by the dashboard, but my car has started to smell like burning rubber when i try and use my de frost. my car is kept in the garage, and i live in illinois.

I own a 2008 nissan altima coupe and have a problem with my dashboard melting. the stickiness or shine from the tacky dashboard creates a bad glare when driving in sunlight and at times can be blinding. quite frankly, driving my car when it's sunny is a safety hazard. i tried bringing my car in to nissan and showing them my dash, but basically was told that they could not do anything. my only option was to replace the whole dash at my own expense. i went on line and was surprised to find that this was a common problem with the 2008 nissan altima coupe models. even more surprising is that nissan hasn't made this issue a recall due to the many complaints from owners of this make and model of nissan cars. it is obviously a manufacturer's defect!! what can i do? can anyone help? on the bottom of this form it asks when this happened and i don't have an exact date but my dash started melting over a year ago and progressively has gotten worse. it started at the part nearest the windshield and now the sticky tackiness covers almost the entire dash.

Melting dashboard that causes glare in the windshield and makes it unsafe to see and drive.

I have a melting dashboard. there is a glare that radiates from the shine of the melting area that presents a visibility problem. i already had an accident because of this, on 10/17/2014, and the issue is ongoing . now there is even more glare . i contacted nissan. they offered only to pay half for replacement. that came out to over 1000.00 which is totally not right. this is a defect.

I am the owner of a 2008 nissan altima with a melting dashboard!! it is sticky to touch and creates an unsafe glare when driving which has become a safety hazard. i have contacted nissan on numerous occasions and i've been told that there were no other complaints on the dashboard melting therefore, they would not agree to fix it nor would they issue a recall to prevent what could eventually be a fatal accident due to what seems to be a manufacture defect on the rubberized material used on the dashboards. i am looking for help from other owners with this issue and the nhtsa for help to enforce a recall to prevent injury and possible fatalities due to this melting dashboard issue.

I live in georgia, and my dashboard is melting. i cannot drive without placing a black towel over the dash to dampen the reflection of the sun. the dash has a clear, gooey, sticky, lacquer-looking, film that shines so brightly that it obstructs my vision. please note that its a hazard to drive this vehicle because there is constant possibility of not being able to see a pedestrian or other vehicles in my line of sight -- this could clearly lead to a serious accident.

Dash has melted causing sticky mess and glare causing lack of visibility while driving which could result in an accident. contacted nissan several times they were no help and said they would not help with cost of replacing dash. *tr

2008 nissan altima coupe has melting sticky dashboard that is shiny and reflects the sun and distorts vision. this is a safety issue and deserves a safety bulletin issues to repair. car operates in central florida. i tried to sell it and was told $2000 would be deducted from the offer due to cost of repair of defective dashboard.

Dashboard has melted to the point of being bare in some places. over 40% of the dash is covered with a glossy substance making it extremely difficult to see through the windshield when the sun is overhead. numerous times i have almost ran over a pedestrian due to this low visibility issue. *tr

The material on the dash is melting, and there are chunks breaking off, greatly affecting the value of my vehicle. this also causes a reflection on the windshield. there is a glare in the direct line of my vision and when driving into the sun it is very difficult to see. i have heard other makes of this same year have had similar problems, and had manufacture recall. hopefully nissan will follow suit. soon.

My 2008 nissan ultima dash board is melting. the visibility is diminished in the sunlight while driving. this is dangerous. it causes a harsh glare and makes it very difficult to seewhile driving in the day time. the dash board is very sticky and shiney. this needs to be recalled for drivers safety immediately.

The dashboard on my 2008 altima has been melting for the past year and is causing a large area of glare on the windshield. when i brought it up to the dealership last year, they told me i had used a chemical on the dashboard, that it needed to be cleaned off, and there is nothing they will do to fix it. they did not address the stickiness, either. this issue of a melting dash is dangerous, as it causes decreased visibility through the windshield with any amount of sunlight. please make nissan take responsibility for using lower quality materials by replacing the dashboards with a better quality material at no cost to the car owner.

Dashboard melted and causes a severe glare on the front windshield. this glare limits viability and is dangerous when driving.

Dashboard is melting with extreme glare off of it. sticky to touch. sometimes hard to see with glare. since first noticing it, it has now covered almost 1/2 the dashboard.

My dashboard has been melting for about two years and i cannot get nissan to replace. i was told i need to pay to replace it for $1800.00. i feel this is faulty equipment and nissan should stand behind their product and do the replacement. i live in tx and the glare it cause is very very dangerous when the sun is out and the sun is always out.

Dashboard is melting, getting sticky and shiny and causing a very dangerous glare on the windshield.

The dash in the car is melting and creating a very bad glare when driving. it is very difficult to see and very dangerous.

My dashboard is melting and causing me to loose visability. there is no recall and there is nothing i can do to stop it.

I live in sunny south florida, my dashboard is melting. i cannot drive without sunglasses on at all times because the reflection of the sun on that clear, gooey, sticky, lacquer-looking, thing shines so brightly that it obstructs my vision and has been affecting my eyesight. please note it is a hazard to drive this vehicle because there is the possibility of not seeing a pedestrian or certain things in front of me that can lead to a serious incident.

Bought my altima from a nissan dealer and it was nearly new, and was told there were no problems. well about 5 years ago i noticed the paint fading and now it's faded all over due to clear coat problem with that model. however, the real problem is that the dash is melting! literally! so when i'm driving the glare caused by the dash onto my windshield is literally blinding! the dash has melted all the way across! this is a safety hazard as my photos clearly show. i nearly ran into a lady walking on the crosswalk because i could not see her!!! please look into this problem. they have been sued over it but did nothing. i have talked to them but nothing! they are aware of the situation as i live in nashville, their headquarters home, and they refuse to help me!!!

The dashboard of my car has melted, presumably from the hot sun. it has become sticky and mess. however, it has also become very shiny. the shine refects dangerously into the windshield while driving, obscuring objects, including cars and pedestrians, on the road. the problem first began about two years ago but has gotten progressively worse. the attached photo, taken today, shows how the driver cannot see a large suv right in front of his vehicle because of the glare on the windshield caused by the melted dashboard.

Dashboard is melting. it is sticky and shiny where the sun hits the dashboard. the dull part has burned away leaving a shiny part that causes a glare. the glare is right in my line of vision and makes it difficult to drive.

I am writing because i have a problem with my 2008 nissan altima coupe where my dashboard is melting in. i live in the florida area and have noticed many other customers are having the same problem in this year alone all in florida. here is the forum which i found many having the similar problem http://forums.nicoclub.com/my-dashboard-is-melting-t569582-90.html. the issue is causing a glare on my windshield making it very hard for me to drive and see. i went to my nissan dealership where the vehicle was purchased and they stated changing the dash is a lot of work and very expensive that only giving a dash cover can be done. i dont like the way the dash cover looks and shouldnt be forced to cover a problem that is a safety hazard because of a defective product.

I've called several times in reference to this and got the run around. also called my insurance and they kept saying to call or go to you. dashboard is still sticky and being asked almost $1500 to get it fixed. i would like for this to get resolved.

The dashboard melts and it's an safety issue. sometimes i cannot see the road becasue the melted dashboard shines on the windshield.

My dashboard has started to melt. it makes the dashboard very sticky as if it is an adhesive product and turns colors. due to this over time, the view out of the windshield is obstructed by a glare from any light source whether its from the sun or from a street lamp. i do not use any cleaning products other than a wet rang for the dash when cleaning the car, and i take pride in my vehicle. since my car is out of warranty, nissan would not replace the dash even though this is an safety issue as some pedestrians or road hazards are almost unavoidable due to the glare. in addition, everything sticks to the dash including paper, sun visors, and even bugs as i am located in miami, fl.

The dashboard in the front of the car is melting and when the sun is in a lower position it will cause a reflection on the windshield that makes it difficult to see. this condition began shortly after the auto in question passed 60,000 miles and has gotten worse over the ensuing years

The dashboard is melting. started 3 years ago, was told by dealership repair shop to clean it. it has increased in size and nothing cleans it. the glare onto the window is terrible, dangerous. has a strange smell to it.

Was driving down major highway in nj and car began to slow down rapidly. was able to get to side of road before completely dying. car was towed to transmission repair place and cost 2000 to repair. now in 2015 i have the very same problem. car needed another transmission at the tune of 2000 more dollars. these transmissions are known for trouble. if someone's going down street in fast lane and this happens they can be killed. it gives no warning at all when it's about to fail. i do believe nissan should repair/replace this issue before someone is killed. could be me or my family. there are numerous posts about this i hope something is done fast. the passenger airbag light comes on saying off when an adult passenger is in car.

I purchased my nissan altima used in 2012. a little more than a year later, i noticed sticky spots on my dashboard. initially, i thought i had cleaned my dashboard with the wrong product. however, the issue has gotten progressively worse since then, and i now know that the stickiness is caused by my dashboard melting in the sun. large sticky, shiny areas cover my dashboard and cause a very serious glare on my windshield that affects my vision when driving. this is a very serious hazard for me and for the drivers around me. it is a defect of vehicle's construction and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

My wife has a 2008 nissan altima she bought 5 years ago. i have noticed over the years the dash seems to be meting. i have tried cleaning it with a damp rag. this only makes the dash gummy and sticky. even after i allow it to dry for a bit it remains sticky and dirty. she bought it 5 years ago for just under $19,000. i told her if we ever wanted to sell it we would lose big time. the car has every amenity; leather, moonroof, heated seats, bose sound, et cetera. it's very demoralizing actually. also, part of the steering wheel is sticky and falling apart. the leather part on the steering wheel is fine. one more thing... i have a 2006 nissan altima and my dash is solid with no problems. we both have always lived in mississippi. it gets hot and humid here but never had a problem like this with my 2006 nissan dash or any other vehicle i have owned. i am 40 years old and have owned plenty. example: a month ago i sold my 1994 ford truck that has been sitting in the sun for 3 years. dash had a few cracks which is normal but didn't melt. *2008 nissan altima is used everyday and properly maintained seems strange to me daniel

I have a 2008 nissan altima. around 2013 i noticed that my dashboard starting melting. i reached out to nissan, did everything they required me to do to obtain a estimate from a local nissan only to be told that it was not covered under warranty. i have since done some research and discovered that there are thousands of people with this same issue. there is even a page on facebook with this issue. which i was blocked from by nissan for complaining too much. obviously this is a faulty material issue. this is a huge concern for me and i am afraid that this could cause and accident. i have no choice but to still drive my car because i have to get to work. now 2015 the dashboard has gotten so bad and glares off of the windshield which make it difficult to see. hopefully you can assist with this matter. thank you

The dashboard on my 2008 nissan altima coupe has been melting and causing very dangerous glare for a couple of years. in 2013 nissan evaluated my vehicle and advised me that nothing could be done because the vehicle was out of warranty and there has been no recall. it is getting significantly worse as time goes on and there is absolutley no way to clean it so now dust and debris collects and sticks and it is becoming a breathing hazard to me. please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The vehicle dashboard has 'melted,' becoming sticky and very shiny. it creates significant reflection in the windshield, reducing visibility.

The nissan altima dashboard is melting, warping, cracking, and peeling as a result of damage from the southern california sun. from reading, the materials used to manufacture the dashboard were not made for extreme heat and weather conditions, thus causing glare and visibility issues as well as funes from melting plastics. this problem was also evident amongst consumers living in florida and nissan has agreed to repair their damaged vehicles as part of a class action lawsuit.

My dash-board became shiner and when sun shines it is highly difficult to drive cause the sun rays it actually blinds me . i have spoke to nissan and they would only furnish a new dash board but i must pay for the dash-board, which i find it very unfair. please help??

On february 2013 i had a frontal car accident due to the glare on my windshield of my melting dash board on my 08 altima. my dashboard seems to be melting with out no reason. dealer will not replace defective dashboard as it is not part of a recall. this is a serious issue which may cause a serious accident raven death to a motorist or pedestrian. nissan needs to make a recall on this issue, it is obvious that this was a defect on their behalf for the majority of 08 altimas. *

takata recall my 2008 nissan altiam dash is so sticky and cracking all the way down. i would really like for nissan to replace it all with we parts!!!! it is hard to drive with the sun comimg in the widow hitting the dash. please fix this for everyone. also my car is always outside. also i really love my car. i would hate to get away with it because of this.

I am another very frustrated melting dashboard owner as this has been happening for some time and is getting worse. the dashboard is very sticky(if you leave something on the dashboard for any length of time it becomes stuck). the dashboard is also shiny and produces a glare. when you drive into the sun. the glare makes it very hard to see oncoming traffic. it is a definite safety hazard. i'm also concerned about the fumes and potential carcinogens being omitted that may pose additional health risks to myself and passengers. i stopped by my local south florida dealership and was told that i was basically out of luck as it is past the warranty provided(?) by nissan.

I purchased my 2008 nissan alitma brand new in florida. the dashboard has melted and continues to do so. it has created a horrible glare and it inhibits my vision. not to mention it is unsightly and impossible to clean a sticky, crumbly surface. my local nissan dealer will not cover the cost as i am out of my warranty. there are complaints all over the internet about this problem. i don't believe i should have to pay over $1,000.00 or even $1.00 to get it fixed as it is a manufacturer's defect. there should have been a recall on this long ago. i moved to kentucky 3 years ago and it's melting here also.

The dashboard in my 2008 nissan altima is badly melted and continues to melt. very sticky and anything that gets on it will stick to it including bugs! i couldn't understand why this would be happening to a vinyl dashboard because i've owned several cars and never encountered such a problem neither had i ever seen that in any other vehicle. i searched on line and was surprised to see that i wasn't the only one with this problem. i showed it to a friend who said it wasn't normal and i should look to see if there was any recalls. unfortunately, there is none.i did discover my dashboard isn't vinyl but seems to be made of a hard foam which melts and scratches easily. the glare from that dashboard is unreal and unsafe. when the sun is shining bright (and it does in pensacola, fl) i have to try to find a spot in the windshield where there is no glare in order to properly see through my windshield. this is definitely a road hazard and safety concern and i can't believe no action has been taken by nhtsa or nissan to correct this defect.

Dash material is defective. it looks like it melted and become shiny, sticky, and reflective when exposed to sunlight. this is a driving and safety hazard because of the refection on wind shield, vision is severely impaired. i contact nissan and they used "passed warranty" excuse; even after i explained it happen years ago and while the car was under warranty. was told by dealer i purchased car to "contact nissan". i did, and they advised that was not covered.
