Problems with 2018 Jeep Wrangler POWER TRAIN

On average, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler starts to “feel” problems with the POWER TRAIN and its various aspects after 6 947 miles.

Recently reported POWER TRAIN problems on 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Vehicle was driven and put into park. when restarted, even though i was able to move the gear shift, the jeep would not move out of park. one dealership said it coded as the transmission control module and supposedly replaced it along with a transmission flush. left and drove the jeep, but it felt like it was always trying to shift into gear. drove about 130 miles and had to get gas even though i was at 3/4 tank when i picked it up after "repairs". turned the vehicle off, got gas and restarted it. again, would not go into gear but i was able to move the gear shifter.

Audible ticking coming from engine compartment

Vehicle was being driven approx 30mph on a city road when a loud bang was heard. immediately pulled over and luckily a stranger following behind quickly escorted the driver out as the vehicle completely went up in flames. metal chunks and pieces could be heard falling underneath the vehicle. upon closer inspection the transmission had completely exploded and ejected the clutch assembly shearing the input shaft and rupturing a fuel line. the vehicle was a complete total loss with flames immediately entering the passenger cabin in seconds. if it was not for a brave bystander serious injury or death would have occurred. this is a new transmission introduced in the new jl wrangler and gladiator and has been happening more and more. it's a serious safety issue that jeep refuses to look into and needs to be investigated immediately. transmission explosion to this degree not only can result in a fire but also metal projectiles hitting bystanders and coming through the floor boards and possibly resulting in injury or death. if you are reading this and have a manual jeep wrangler have it checked immediately! this was a completely unknown problem showing no symptoms whatsoever.*jb

While driving the steering appears to be locking up

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 72 mph, the vehicle shook without warning. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact to call the dealer. the contact called three different dealers, including glockner of ashland at 606-559-0217 (located at 1041 greenup ave, ashland, ky 41101) and was informed not to drive the vehicle and to bring it to the shop. the contact was informed that the earliest the vehicle could be inspected would be october 23, 2019. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 12,000.

My car has been experiencing the 'death wobble' as some dealerships have told me that. the steering gets a mind of its own and its super hard to control sometimes. i purchased a brand new car and it feels like im driving a lemon. almost every other day since i purchased it (one month ago) seems like ive almost gotten into an accident.

This was found during a tire replacement. the left rear brake was coated with "oil" that i was told came from the rear transmission seal next to the wheel leaking. the vehicle was, at times, hard to stop. i was forced to "slam" on the brakes to get vehicle to stop. the anti-lock brake feature seemed to stop working and i would skid to a stop. there was no consistency in the occurrence of this symptom. the dealer told us that they were replacing the rear axle assembly to fix the problem.

Just bought a 2018 wrangler jl leftover/ brand new off the lot. i immediately noticed that the steering is very loose and difficult to control. this is especially true in wind or if driving 55 miles per hour or more. my husband refuses to drive the car because he feels unsafe doing so. i get very nervous as well. i'm constantly having to adjust the wheel to stay on the road. the second issue is that sometimes when i set the cruise control it will just keep going past my designated speed i chose unless i turn it off. lastly my car seems to not shift gears down. it throttles and revs. when i took it to be looked at i was told it's no big deal. well it is! even my local mechanic said he feels that it's not switching properly between gears. i've waited 22 years to buy my first wrangler and i paid $42000 for it. it should not do any of this! it's brand new. it's also a safety hazard. i could get into a major accident! i need help with these things please. stand behind your product. this is my first wrangler but my 4th jeep. i also talked my mom and brother into buying new jeeps the same week i did last month! my contact is [xxx]. [xxx]. i'd like call back so someone can help me. thank you information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt

Gear is stuck in park. not able to move gear from park to any other gear. having to wait for a long period of time for transmission to cool down in order to switch gears.

Purchased new 2018 jeep wrangler on monday april 1,2019. noticed vehicle was leaking in driveway less then 24 hours after purchase. called dealer and returned vehicle for evaluation of leak. issue-factory defective transmission. had not been thoroughly inspected prior to delivery and was delivered to us with factory defective transmission due to cracked casing.

Start engine, place foot on brake pedal, put vehicle in reverse. before even letting foot completely off of brake pedal engine begins to stutter and completely stalls out. have to put vehicle back in park and start vehicle back up and start process all over again hoping that vehicles engine does not continue to stall. started happening approximately 3-months ago. took vehicle to rouen chrysler/dodge/jeep/ram in woodville, ohio. they kept overnight to try to replicate issue but stated that they were not able to duplicate. they did end up upgrading software on a control module in hopes that it would solve this issue. it did not. they did state that since the issue had been documented on their end that if a recall or safety issue was released by chrysler that whatever the problem was would be fixed at no charge - even if vehicle was beyond the manufacturer warranty. my concern is that this issue is occurring more often than not and is becoming a serious safety concern for my family. this issue needs to be addressed asap before a serious accident or injury occurs. i am kindly requesting that the manufacturer take a serious look at this issue and correct as they should. it should also be noted that i have several videos taken where this issue has occurred on several different occasions. thank you.

Driving around 40 miles per hour on the street, suddenly it had no power, i stopped and the transmission wont take any other gear except park.

Death wobble. at highway speeds loose control of wheel requiring immediate slowdown. very dangerous. also issues with transmission getting stuck in low gear when trying to accelerate.

Loosing communication with body control module code u0141 . started happening at 4300 miles. drive around 25 miles at 70 to 75 and all gauges flash and cycle. transmission goes into limp mode. and if you shut it off it won't start or crank over until it cools off. took in to dealer for wty repair, they replaced the fuse box , but that didn't fix it. they tried again and give up on it. said light bar and winch voided the wty. which both connect at battery and winch has never been used and light bar very seldom. it has 8300 miles on it now it may go 2 months and be fine or it may do it 3 times in one day. last time in shop was 2/27/19 they had it for 10 days that's when they decided it was accessories and no wty. it went almost 2000 miles not acting up until today 5/25/19.

Manual transmission started popping out of 2nd gear around 9500 miles. transmission had to be replaced. at 11,500 creeking noise when turning left/right. had to have rear axles & rear differential replaced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 70 mph over a bump in the road, the entire front end of the vehicle shook and wobbled without warning. the vehicle was taken to reed chrysler dodge jeep ram hyundai (888-459-1976, located at 3100 s, us-169, st joseph, mo 64503) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be duplicated. the failure recurred three times. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 1,800.

Drove into the gas station, put my jeep in park, put the emergency break on, turned it off and proceeded to fill up the tank, i did not top the tank off, got back in my jeep started it back up, engine started fine, released emergency break put jeep in drive put foot on gas to proceed out of the gas station jeep pulled out of the gas bay and i drove forward slowly, while turning left out of the bay. i drove forward with my foot on the gas about 20 feet. all of a sudden the jeep came to a stop and shut off while still in drive. i would press on the gas pedal to move forward and nothing would happen it just remained stationary.. all electronics still worked in the car. i put the car in park, turned on my hazards turned the jeep off and then back on, and engine was not starting. turned it on and off 3 more times and finally the engine started back up on the 4th time and i was able to drive away. this has not occurred again, but i have not driven it other than 20 miles back home where it now is sitting waiting to go to the jeep dealership.

1. the steering wheel is loose and vehicle wanders off of the road at >45 mph speed. unable to keep vehicle on traffic lane. 2. the vehicle stopped on city street while traveling at 22 mph speed. check engine light on and the transmission locked. 3. low battery voltage (12.7v) reading while running and at stationary. *dt*jb *dt*jb

Operating vehicle in 4 low mode, descending a modest grade off road, experienced unintended vehicle acceleration when foot was off gas pedal

I entered a parking space and was not within the lines. i backed up about 2 feet and felt a sudden stop and 'clunk.' i could not move the shifter at all. the dash display said 'park lock.' it instructed me to turn the car of and then put it back in gear. after 3 attempts to do that (i may have been rushed the first 2 times) the i was able to put it in gear. there are fewer than 500 miles on this new vehicle. it hasn't hapened again, but this seems very dangerous. i have an appointment to take it to the dealer.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving approximately 65 mph over a bump in the road, the vehicle shook profusely. there was no warning indicator illuminated. the failure recurred several times. the vehicle was taken to lawless chrysler dodge jeep ram (888-384-4956, located at 196 lexington st, woburn, ma 01801) where it was diagnosed that the damper needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that someone would be sent to the contact's residence to inspect the vehicle. the contact stated that no one was sent and the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

Drive train vibration most noticeable between 59 - 64 mph. vibration in steering wheel, driver and passenger front seats, floor pans. 10/3 - 10/8/18 dealer inspected entire vehicle, balanced, road force tested tires found all within spec and balanced with no indexing required. in addition to extensive road testing, evaluation, the service department temporarily replaced 2018 jlu rubicon wheels/tires with wheels/road friendly tires from other wrangler model and drive train vibration was still present. dealer service shop foreman indicated transmission, torque converter or drive shaft out of balance but needed guidance from chrysler engineering on next steps and proposed resolution. met with chrysler engineering at dealership service department 10/22/18 and chrysler engineer stated it's the tires and after another balance and road force test informed me everything was within specifications and they rotated tires front to back. no changes to problem and vibration still exists. i've had the tires/wheels balanced and road force tested by an independent 3rd party and now twice by the dealership. vehicle is less than 2 months old and 1300 miles.

Vehicle driven fo approximately 30 minutes with no apparent issues. average speed about 40 to 50 mph. driver smelled a concerning odor, pulled into a parking, got out of vehicle and noticed a flame. she called 911and vehicle became fully engulfed. vehicle is a total loss. after some research, it appears this is an issue with jeep.

Most recent incident: sunday near frankfurt airport the error code read " service shifter" and the orange service engine light came on while driving. i drove into the car park then tried to shift from drive to park and the jeep locked in neutral. the jeep locked up as if it was in park so we could not push or pull the vehicle. i also could not turn the vehicle off completely. the interior lights were on and i could not turn them off via the ignition. this is why the battery was drained. the car sat since sunday on until it was towed and your staff was able to look at it. pictures will follow in the next email. please pull entire diagnostic history if possible. first incident: vehicle did the same thing on vogelweh air force base. it was towed to mum mattusch. when they looked at it the diagnosis was low battery. it was explained the draw on the battery by the vehicle but showed no issue as the vehicle was drained and upon charging the battery that must reboot the error code.

While making a left turn at low speeds it seemingly felt like my power steering was disabled and i had to crank my wheel in order to make the turn. a few hours later, i get home and about 100 yards from my apartment, the 'service electronic stability control ' warning pops up. i have only had this vehicle 2 days and less than 300 miles. it's safe to say, i'm extremely unhappy with this vehicle.

2018 jeep jl unlimited 3.6l automatic transmission, 750 total miles. on 9/12/2018, transmission failed and vehicle was towed to dealership (mckay's dodge/jeep, waite park, mn). when vehicle was lowered by tow truck, about 1 liter of gasoline poured down over the exhaust system on the right rear (passenger) and onto the service bay floor. the vehicle had a nearly full gas tank at the time of the tow. if the vehicle had been driven to the dealership and the gasoline had dumped as much volume onto the muffler and exhaust system...both the vehicle and the dealership would have most likely burned. the vehicle is presently at the dealership in waite park, mn *dt *tr *bf updated 10/31/18*jb

Around 7000 miles we started to get a vibration that would last till we slowed down every time we hit a bump with our wrangler jl at highway speed. it has since turned into a violent shake that will literally rattle your teeth. you can feel the shake throughout the whole care and especially on the wheel. the bump in road does not have to be big and can be as small as the place where the road connects to an overpass. having to slow down to around 40 mph to get it to stop when all other traffic is traveling 60+ mph is scary and we are now worried for our safety. have taken the vehicle in to our jeep dealer 3 times, but they have not been able to resolve the issue. they did say that they currently have 3 other jl wranglers experiencing the same problem and they have yet to find a solution.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while the vehicle was parked outside of the contact's parent's house, it rolled away and stopped against the grill of her parent's vehicle. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called all american chrysler, jeep, dodge, ram of odessa at (432) 614-0801 (located at 2510 e 8th st, odessa, tx 79762) and was informed to leave the vehicle for three weeks for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 4,695.

Electrical issues incl but not limited to: gauge readouts incorrect, ecm not allowing proper shifts. engine problems with the valve lifters making noise and broken.

While starting the vehicle for the third time in two days after picking up the car following a pcm flash for a cruise control recall, i noticed the prnd lights flashing on the shiftier approximately 10 seconds after vehicle start. i subsequently received a cel and a "service shifter' message. i shut off the vehicle, let all displays go dark, and restarted; the cel went away. i proceeded to continue my drive home. about 10/15 min later, i noticed the lights flickering once again on the shifter. i once again elected to continue home as it was late at night. approximately 2/3 miles later, i received errors on the start/stop and traction control systems. the vehicle appeared to go into a "limp mode" - i it would not shift out of 8th gear and i experienced reduced power and an inability to maintain the posted 70 mph. i decided to exit at the next off-ramp as i could maintain 65mph. while exiting, i noticed the gauge needles (speedo and tach) sweep and got airbag warnings. i heard the electric fan go 100% high (very loud) and i lost power steering. i pulled over to the side of the road and shut off the vehicle. after letting it sit for approximately 5 min, i restarted the vehicle and while the cel remained no other errors were illuminated or presented. i was less than 2 miles from a jeep dealer and decided to try to continue there on access roads. about 1/8 mile down the road, i once again lost power steering and say various error messages like before. i pulled into a parking lot and aborted my attempts and called for a tow to the dealer less than a mile away. posted are pictures of the errors read using an obd-2 scanner i had in the glove compartment. while i have driven cars without power steering in the past, it was rather difficult with the larger ~32" tires and i am not sure a crash could be prevented if a smaller person was driving.

I was stopped at a 4 way light in marion illinois, had my jeep in neutral with foot on the brake. the light turned green, i pushed the clutch in and the engine didn't come back on. i tried for over fifiteen min. to get it on. finally called a tow and had it taken to the dealership that i ordered it through not even 30 days ago. they didn't look at it until 4 days later and said they couldn't recreate the issue. the issue is with the push start engines. i have a manual w/o electric doors so no auto start on a key fob. i only had 204 miles on it!! the dealership told me they've had several people take it out for drives to recreate the issue to no avail. i bought /ordered and fully paid for a brand new 2018 jeep to not have any issues arise. now i'm scared to drive it anywhere!

Vehicle was parked and would not engage into a gear. i turned off and restarted and was able to get intro gear, and engine light was on, it would not get out of 6th gear, brought to dealer and they said transmission needed a re flash, and it was good, next day it would not go into gear, i shifted transfer case from 2h to 4h back to 2h and engine light was on, i was able to drive to dealership. i was told that they are putting in a new transmission and am waiting for completion. i do not feel safe with this vehicle and am looking for a buy back from manufacture, vehicle only has 1,500 miles on it. *tt updated 9/20/18*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 jeep wrangler. while driving various speeds, one week after the vehicle was purchased, the vehicle shut down. the service transmission and the service engine indicators illuminated. the vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and restarted, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the champion chrysler jeep dodge dealer (9655 firestone blvd, downey, ca 90241, 562-231-3500) where the technician diagnosed and replaced the module inside the transmission; however, the failure recurred. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to give more time for further testing. the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer where the transmission was replaced. the contact had not yet retrieved the vehicle to determine if it was repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 300.
