We have classified the 117 complaints from 2012 Jeep Wrangler about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Air bag light and warning is going on and off when turning the steering wheel. dealer says the clock spring needs to be replaced. there is a recall on right hand drive vehicles and numerous reports of all clock springs failing.
Faulty tipm.. having trouble with vehicle not starting. the starting issue started in 10/2015 but wasn't a regular issue til 01/2016. brought to dealership as is is a newer model with only 27000 miles on it. they replaced a sentry module..problem persisted. now being told it's the tipm. apparently this is a wide spread issue and was told to report it.. still waiting to see if covered under extended warranty..
While driving straight on my residential street my engine stalled and i lost all power to the vehicle. i had no power for lights, flashers, turn signals, interior lights, etc. basically, the vehicle was totally dead. i was close enough to push the jeep to my residence and checked the battery and i had full voltage. i had the vehicle towed to the dealership and it was diagnosed as a faulty tipm. fortunately, i was not on the interstate doing interstate speeds at night...
2012 jeep wrangler have had intermittent trouble for well over a year. turn car off and headlights stay on. finally figured out that if i turn the car back on and roll forward a little i can sometimes turn lights off. same problem turning the headlights on. rolling the car a few inches usually corrected the headlights. windshield wipers will start on their own or stop during use with no warning. this began in late 2014 but the problem was so intermittant we could not duplicate it on demand until august 2015. the dealer replaced the multi function switch and wiring harness but before we even drove out of the parking lot both the lights and windshield wipers were doing the same thing. they kept it a few days and "sealed the cluster". didn't have a problem for a few weeks and the car is now 700 miles away at school with daughter. around sept 2015 intermittent issues again but not able to duplicate at dealer. recently (jan 2016) the problems are daily and include the headlights going out every time the car makes a turn and then come back on a few seconds later. in addition the turn signal cuts off. windshield wipers have a mind of their own but the lights are the most dangerous problem. now that the problem is constant it's going back to a dealer but because the car is with daughter away at school it will be a different dealer. we are uncertain about tail lights because this occurs while driving and intermittently but the headlights and turn signal going off while driving through intersections has made this issue a major accident/injury risk.
Vehicle engine light came on after starting engine and driving 30 feet from initial parked location. vehicle was stopped and explosion occurred under the hood while driver was still in vehicle. no previous indication there was any issue with vehicle. upon driver emergency exit of vehicle, further explosions and large flames engulfed the vehicle resulting in a total loss of vehicle within minutes.
Tpim module has failed causing several strange issues with the car. most notable for safety is the front windshield wiper pump will not work.
Faulty clockspring airbag light appears sporadically when vehicle is in motion and i have someone in the passenger seat, notifying me that their airbag is deactivated. horns volume is weak. possibly a coincidence, but the low tire pressure alert appears at start-up. all tires (goodyear lt285/70r17) read 45-50 psi. this part is recalled in 2007 and 2008 jeep wranglers, but not for 2009-2016. it is the exact same part.
Takata recall. i was driving and star raining. turn on the wiper ,no function i check washer, not working. then i notice no head lights,no horn's,no tail lights. 4 ways and brakes light does work.
Had to replace engine wiring harness on my wrangler and my wife's 2012 wrangler. both are rhd. not covered under warranty. shame on jeep
Basically going 80 mph on the highway my car decides to shut off, endangering the lives of myself and my passengers. forcing us to stop at the side of the road and call a tow, keep in mind this all happened at 2 am in the middle of a dark empty highway. i take it to the dealer the next day and after running the diagnostics they tell me it is a faulty tipm. now they are trying to charge me a $1,000 in repairs to replace a part that comes faulty from the factory.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the windshield wipers and turn signals independently activated and all the interior lighting will fall to illuminate. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 31,000. the vin was not available.
Since i have owned the vehicle the windshield wipers will come on every once in a while when i turn on the left blinker. i also have a problem with the tailgait. after about 3 years of ownership of the vehicle the tailgate hinge did not stop the tailgate from opening up a full 180 degrees causing the elbow joint to come completely out and my right tail light to be shattered. i was told by the dealer ship that this was common issue, but they would not return my calls/emails to get it fixed.
Several problems occurred electronically with my wrangler in the past 2 months. 1. headlights turned on when i came out of the store 2. check engine light came on (4cyl. misfire) but cleared itself after 100 miles 3. while sitting idle at a red light, the dash warning light lit up and flickered as well as chimed for a minute. 4. while cruising on the interstate about 70mph, the jeep shut off for a few seconds and turned back on before i was almost rear ended by the vehicle behind me.

Tipm failure while driving in traffic vehicle stalled creating a very dangerous situation.
Just over a month ago i was going to work, and noticed that my turn signals were not working. i tried moving the turn signal up and down to no avail. i also noticed that my headlights would not come on. i pulled over and thought maybe a fuse went bad or something and found every single fuse to be fine. i then also noticed that the digital compass readout on the dash was not functioning, and i could not scroll through the menus with the main computer using the steering wheel controls. the hazard lights would work properly...and the lights would flash properly when i locked the doors with my key fob...which told me that the circuit was still working. after about 25 minutes of fiddling everything suddenly started working again. the next day, while at work i went to lunch, and when i returned to work as i pulled into the parking spot, my windshield wipers randomly turned on without me turning them on...and i could not get them to turn off...even with the engine off. i had to disconnect the battery to get them to go off. i took it to the local jeep dealer and they found that it was the tipm i figured well...now i do have a new unit and should be fine. that fantasy was destroyed yesterday when i went to go home from work, and suddenly my lights would not turn on...then got stuck on and couldn't turn them off...and my windshield wipers would not turn on at all...and the turn signals would not function...all while going down the interstate. i live in virginia, and we are in the middle of a huge rain event, so the wipers and lights for sure needed to work in order for me to drive home. i had to disconnect the battery to get everything to turn off. after doing that...the headlights will not turn on...and the wipers remain the same and not working. needless to say i had to get a ride home after i made it back to work...having to leave it at work.

While driving, the engine, power steering and power brakes all went out. the first dealership said it was defective battery terminals, the next 2 agreed it was the tipm for the vehicle. when the start/run relay is moved at all, the vehicle shuts down. dodge/chrysler/jeep have reported the part on backorder and have no estimate as to when it will be available. *tr

Faulty tipm. since buying the jeep brand new it has done weird things (ie: locks won't work, windows won't work, radio won't work) but if i just turned the jeep off and back on the problem went away. however, now my locks quit working all together and only solution is replace the tipm but i didn't know that was the problem the whole time until now and now the jeep is out of it's warranty and cost $1000 to fix. *tr

2012 jeep wrangler sport 3.6l vehicle does not start at random. vehicle has stalled at highway speeds. all electrical will turn on but jeep will not crank over or make any attempt to start. wipers turn on, their own. battery, and starter have both been checked. evidence leads to faulty tipm sensor but because the chrysler dealership can not duplicate the error after 5 tries they said they can not replace the tipm. dealership states they can not just throw parts at it to fix the issue even with hundreds to thousands of other chrysler products having the same issue. *tr

I understand that this may not be in the nhtsa's arena but i wasn't sure where else to turn. around the 21st of november 2014 the headlights, blinkers, cabin lighting and cruise control stopped working. i took the vehicle into capital chrysler jeep dodge in garner nc on the 25th of november. the dealership diagnosed the problem as an electrical cluster in the instrument panel shorting out. the part is an exchange part and one of chrysler's vendors would send a new part calibrated to my mileage to replace my shorted cluster and they would send my cluster back to be repaired. my vehicle was not allowed to be driven, despite physically working, because the new clusters mileage had to match the vehicles mileage and they had already submitted the mileage to the vendor. around the 5th of december i was informed that the part was not going to ship from the vendor until the 19th of december. on the 19th i was informed by capital chrysler jeep dodge that the part had not been shipped by the vendor and that they weren't expecting the part until after the new year. today i received an update that the part is not expected to ship until the 12th. my case number with chrysler is [xxx] and i give you permission to contact them about this incident. the part causes the lights and blinkers to not work. chrysler is putting cars on the road that they aren't able to repair to a safely derivable condition in a reasonable period of time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) *js
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that the instrument panel cluster failed to work. the contact noticed an intermittent short occurring upon activating the parking lights, fog lights, headlights, and tail lights. there were also no audio controls, the horn would not sound, and the power steering was inoperable. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who held the vehicle for several weeks and indicated that the instrument cluster was not available. the contact was not given a timeframe as to when the part would become available to repair the vehicle. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 33,500.
Was sleeping and woke up to a popping noise that happened to be my jeep up in flames at approx 4:30 am. called chrysler they came out n told me it was electrical near the battery. i had no aftermarket electrical to cause this. chrysler is not doing anything to help me. i lost my jeep. i am at a lose of words, my jeep was my baby... very disappointed in chrysler and don't know what steps to take for them to help me or rectify the issue. please help. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Ignition switch ? i was driving with my family and the car shut itself off. the engine stopped, the dash panel flickered, and then i lost all power. the brakes started losing pressure and my swaybar disconnect became disconnected. 1.5 seconds later the jeep came alive and i had all the lights on the dash light up with warning bells like you do when you start the vehicle. this happened 13 or so times on the way home. it's currently at the dealer getting fixed. while i was there this morning there were 3 others with chrysler group vehicles with the same problem. the jeep forums also have several posts about this. *tr
The engine has always had a ticking sound. it's been evaluated as a head replacement. the engine light has been on for months. misfire #2 cylinder is the code. *tr
One morning the controls, horn, & i'm assuming, airbag stopped working (no lights or functionality). just noticed the first time going out for the day. the removable hard top panels where off, and some dew was present in the air earlier that morning.... but it's a jeep. the horn honked from the steering wheel once and then no more. it does still work when locking the doors and such remotely. *tr
Purchased my jeep wrangler in may of 2012. since purchase there has been numerous instances of the wipers turning on when in the off position. wipers make a single pass and stop. this problem occurs at all speeds. it also occurs at times when the turn signal is activated. i brought in for service and the dealer replaced a switch. but now the problem is back again. also, when stopped i am unable to view videos on the dvd player. the player has been replaced, but now it is doing the same thing.
