We have classified the 117 complaints from 2012 Jeep Wrangler about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM into the following categories.
Driving home every light on my dash started blinking, no rpm, no speedometer. blinkers did not work. when i turned into my driveway, parked and i turned the key but jeep did not turn off. i was able to take my key out and the jeep stayed running for a minute then turned off. jeep would not restart.
Under hard acceleration, like passing a car on the highway, the vehicle goes into limp mode which has nearly caused me to wreck 4 to 5 times due to being unable to accelerate. once i pull of the road and restart limp mode goes away but the engine light stays on. the dealership says that the wiring harness is the issue. the vehicle has codes popping up about torque management. i would like for this to be fixed free of charge due to the wiring harnesses being an integral part if this vehicle.
Sway bar light and other indicators flashing because of water entering the electronic sway bar disconnect box in front of the sway bar, under the front of the vehicle in a non-waterproof containment, causing multiple shorts. common issue in 2012 jeep wrangler rubicon unlimited 4x4 because of poor design. this happens when driving in heavy rain, while driving if you hot a large puddle water splashes up in to the box shooting it out.
All the electronics in my steering wheel went out, the horn stopped working, and my airbag no longer works. some of my warning lights on the dash even stopped working. the fm/am radio also no longer works. i took it to the dealership and they said my clock springs went out. i am very worried about my airbag not deploying in a crash. none of these work, whether the car is moving or stationary.
Sway bar indicator won't stop blink and i have never used this function and my windshield wipes go on and off at random times and the paint on the door hinges have been bubbling since i bought it and i laid extra for the car care package but they would not honor it
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep wrangler. while driving various speeds, the headlights turned off independently without warning. the contact had to continuously turn the headlight switch in order to have visibility when the failure occurred. the contact also stated that the turn signals would not operate and the windshield wipers operated independently when the vehicle was started. the contact had to repeatedly turn the windshield wipers on and off for them to stop working. the contact called scott robinson chrysler dodge jeep ram (20900 hawthorne blvd, torrance, ca 90503, (424) 299-8800) where he was informed that the part needed to repair the vehicle would cost $1,300. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa for assistance. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 6,500.
Sentry light and tire pressure light flash intermittently while driving at normal speeds.
Clockspring required replacement. intermittant airbag light, intermittant function from controls on steering wheel. no pattern to intermittant functioning, i personally cleaned out all contacts and harnesses before paying dealership to replace clockspring.
Wife and i were driving around enjoying life. we stopped to eat dinner got back in the jeep it was dark to go home there were no lights, turn signals wipers and horn didn't work. called a friend to take us home.
Driving down the road when suddenly all the lights started flashing, radio flashed and then the jeep started to loose power. pulled over, put in park and turned it off. exterior and interior lights were flashing. clicking noises where coming from the tipm even with the key off. everything was locked up once it was put in park and wouldn't unlock to tow. the only recourse was to unhook the battery and try to reset everything after waiting for about 20 seconds. i hooked the battery back and was able to drive it home. this is the second time this happened however the first time was in park and everything went haywire. was able to restart w/o disconnecting the battery. it is getting worse. we are looking at a $1000 repair bill. we are hesitant to drive it.
While driving my 2012 jeep wrangler unlimited recently, all of a sudden my check engine light comes on & shortly after my abs & traction control lights go on as well. i've had the car checked twice & no one can seem to give me an answer on what the problem is. they've went off since but came back on a day later. it's beyond frustrating especially when i see so many people with similar problems yet no recalls? for the cost of these cars, i can't understand why there's so many with issues. also while i'm at it i should note that my heating & defrost completely stopped working. i live in upstate ny & my mileage is currently 109k
Stationary vehicle starts when i open the door without having key in ignition. stationary vehicle engine fails to shut off when i turn off ignition and remove key. anti-lock brake system locks up brakes while vehicle is standing still and will not move under any throttle amount because the brakes remain locked up. vehicle factory alarm turns on and off randomly when drivers door is opened. windows roll down by themselves while vehicle is turned off. air conditioner blower (can't say if compressor keeps running or not) randomly shuts off while driving down the road and comes back on a couple of minutes later. cruise control will not accept speed set but then turns 5 minutes later whether you wanted it to or not. everything points to the tipm but even with 10's of thousands of complaints fiat/chrysler still insist there is no wrangler tipm problem, and u.s. government oversight groups refuse to do anything about it. (when did this happen date is just the latest occurrence of an ongoing serious safety issue that fiat/chrysler refuses to acknowledge..
Lightning bolt symbol and check engine light come on while driving. vehicle goes into limp mode and starts running roughly. if turned off and allowed to sit will start up again just fine. check engine light typically turns off after a couple more trips and runs just fine until it randomly does it again. has been sometimes minutes, other times weeks between episodes. have had accelerator position sensor replaced, throttle body replaced, and wiring to throttle replaced. keeps happening. has happened when vehicle is parked, sitting at light, normal driving, and while driving at highway speed.
Takata recall- a few days ago my airbag light started turning on and off each time i started my car and now the light has remained on.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 jeep wrangler. while driving for approximately 15 minutes, gray smoke emerged from the engine compartment. the contact pulled over and opened the hood to find the harness (that goes around the battery) engulfed in flames. the contact extinguished the fire with water. the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic and they referred the contact to the dealer (georgia chrysler dodge jeep, 12114 us-301, statesboro, ga 30458) where a diagnostic appointment was scheduled. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
While driving straight on a county road at 25 mph, the vehicle's gauges turned off and all warning lights lit up on the dash. the vehicle stopped and would not restart, lock, or unlock doors. all fuses and the battery were good. dealership confirmed it was a failed tipm (totally integrated power module) and quoted $1300 to replace.
Check engine illuminated in mid-2017, but no codes were present and jeep appeared to run fine. in sept 2017, while driving on i-75, the jeep shuddered and the electronic throttle control light came on, along with the anti-lock brake system light. i took it to the jeep dealership immediately, but they couldn't figure out the problem because the lights had turned off. they ended up swapping out the spark plugs and two ignition coils. the check engine light came back on a few days later. i was able to pull codes for the throttle position system 1 and 2. in oct 2017, the vehicle jumped/shuddered and stopped running. i had to coast to the shoulder and leave it sit for 10 minutes. i was able to restart the vehicle and drive it a local repair shop where they were unable to pull any codes and based off of my description of the issues, replaced the pedal assembly and cleared the codes. they said if the issue came back to replace the battery. the issue came back within 5 minutes of leaving the automotive garage, so i changed the battery in november. after that, the check engine light when away, but would come back on sporadically. the jeep was still shuddering/jumping and would then completely stop after the check engine light, the electronic throttle control, and the anti-lock brake system notification, still. i just took it to another garage (aril 2018), since the previous two had no idea what the issue was. at this point i was still pulling throttle position 1 and 2 codes. this garage replaced the entire throttle body and ran a fuel injection service. within 15 minutes of me driving away from that garage, the check engine light came on, followed by a softer shudder of the vehicle and the electronic throttle control light. i tried to pull codes when i got home, but there were none--but the check engine light and the electronic throttle control light are still on.
The motor was overheating the radiator fan did not turn on. tipm was defect.
My vehicle started out with intermittently not being able to start/ turn over or receive electronic signals to the total integrated power module. over time the problem became more prevalent with other issues occurring along with inability to start. these problems included loss of power to the transmission and position sensors, and cabin lights coming on there own while driving. after several trips to the mechanics it was determined that the tipm was the problem, after replacing the module all problems have stopped.
Tipm smoking at power feed. random total loss of all power while driving.
Engine dash lights abs, traction control and engine light came on then off then back on will in motion. also while in motion, an rpm surge occurred which almost caused me to rear end the car in front of me. this surge has occurred twice in the last day so have parked the vehicle for fear of having an accident that could result in bodily harm.
Tipm problems over heating. safety front turn signals changed to fog light not aware until parked in front of a plate glass window and noticed the problem tipm less than 90 days since it was changed. hearing of airbag failure antilock brake problems etc all related to the tipm should be cause for concern
When driving my jeep it has shut off on its own. today i when from drive to reverse and was trying to park on a busy street and the vehicle just shut off on its own. i had to put the vehicle in park turn the key to the off position and then start the vehicle again before i could drive again. this is very dangerous and could possibly kill someone if this happens on the interstate. ive read many reports on line of people having the same problem.
When driving and accelerate to around 3500 to 5000 rpm randomly the jeep stalls and doesn't accelerate nore passes 2500 rpms. very dangerous when driving in the freeway. i cleared the check engine light around 3 different occasions. obd code was p06dd
On 3 occasions my jeep wrangler's accelerator pedal has stuck to the floor. shifting to neutral would not bring the pedal up. manually pulling the pedal would not make a change. twice i had to turn off the car in mid traffic. the third time i was able to coast to the side of the road.
Tipm should be recalled. front wind shield wipers stopped working in a snow storm and now several of the electrical components are acting funny. could be a serious safety issue - no lights on the dash working. need to replace the tipm and was told this is very common problem and the part is on back order - total cost $1200 repair
Jeep had random "jolt" while driving down the road at speed. then a really hard jolt in february that stalled the engine while driving down the interstate at 60 mph. would not start for 10 minutes, then did. i have taken to two different dealers who say that they can't replicate the problem. not safe and they should have to figure out the problem and fix it.
While stopped exiting a plaza i turned on my turn signal and it didn't turn on at all. it was operational when i pulled into the plaza a short while before. then when parked the interior lights would also not turn on with the same control stalk. the next day the other control stalk that controls the windshield wipers, horn when pressed from the steering wheel, along with all of the controls on the steering wheel were not working. i was told by a mechanic that it was the clock spring inside the steering wheel. i researched recalls and saw recalls on the clock spring involving the air bag deployment. i then took my jeep to the dealership where they determined that it was the lin bus failure internal to instrument cluster. also the lights on the window switches have all slowly stopped working over the course of the year. along with the cable from the antenna to the radio has broken leaving me with no am/fm radio. my jeep has never been stuck in the rain with the top off, has suffered no water damage, has been in no accidents, have been driven with care due to the fact i love it and paid a pretty penny for it. i've kept up with oil changes and tire rotation getting a vehicle inspections every 3,000 miles. i have read multiple accounts of the instrument cluster going bad on 2012 jeep wranglers. this is issue should be reevaluated by nhtsa and chrysler. chrysler please keep in mind that you have loyal jeep owners who value their jeeps and don't want to drive anything else, but we also deserve a quality product for our money.
This is a known problem and yet still not recalled the tipm just failed in the jeep (second one in a month) this time it did it while driving. the jeep went all ape [xxx]. alarms going off, trying to restart, the speedometer wouldn't work. i thought i was going to crash and die. happened on the highway and continued when i got on to the city streets the dealer mech said it probably went bad again(in less than a month) i see many people with the same issues(other suvs from same company have recall on the part, just not the wrangler) information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
My vehicle clock spring has gone out. my vehicle has 45000 miles and is a model year 2012. other years, specifically 2008-2011 have been recalled for the very same thing. also 2012 rhd models have been recalled for the very thing. my airbag light chimes and is illuminated when driving the vehicle, whenever i turn left, right or stop or accelerate.
The vehicle power abruptly drops while driving losing anywhere from 100 to 500 rpms. if the vehicle is stopped at a signal or traveling at lower speeds the power drop will shut down the vehicle. the problem is random and very unsafe
While being towed by our rv on a city street, a fire started under the hood of the jeep. the transfer case was in neutral. the manual transmission was in neutral. the ignition switch was turned 1 notch to accessory to unlock the steering. the fire was extinguished by the fire department. no police report was filed because the fire was not caused by an accident. because of the severity of the fire damage, no cause of the fire was determined.
The manufacturer of my vehicle, fca has issued a number of recalls eg s33 covering jeepwranglers built 2007-2010 and recently s40 covering only right hand drive jeeps built 2022-2016. these recalls are for clock spring failures resulting in compromised airbag circuits which will not deploy. the clock spring fails because dust gets in it. my jeep is a 2012 wrangler with about 10,000 miles on it has had this failure. it has been driven extensively without windows in the desert. i have discussed this problem with fca without success . what is my recourse???
Tipm went out lost all control of the vehicle while traveling 55 mph! could have be a deadly situation! jeep needs to have a recall asap....
Windshield wipers stopped working on the highway in the middle of a thunderstorm, creating a hazardous situation. took the vehicle into the shop, had the fuses checked, wiper motor replaced, windshield wiper switch tested, and nothing fixed the issue. the issue turns out to be a faulty tipm (totally integrated power module), and will cost over 1200 dollars to replace. this appears to be a widespread issue with chrysler vehicles.
July 26, 2016, we took our 2012 jeep wrangler to the dealership after the abs and trac lights came on. the dealership showed a c102a code and a u140b code. they replaced and programmed the left rear wheel speed sensor, feeling that would solve our problem. on august 18, 2016, in stopped traffic, on a major state highway, the car lost power. we were able to restart the vehicle, but by the time we got it to the dealership, no codes were evident. on september 18, 2016. driving 60 mph, on another state highway, the vehicle lost power. fortunately it was a sunday afternoon and traffic was light. we were able to coast to a side road and after about 4 attempts were able to get the vehicle restarted and drove about 2 blocks to a safe place. we had to contact a tow truck to carry the vehicle 10 miles to the dealership. the service technician was unable to get the vehicle to recreate the code, so he took it home for about 3 days, finally having the vehicle lose power and was able to get it coded. the diagnosis was a tipm shorting out. there was also a damaged clockspring. both parts were replaced. total of both invoices = $1,752.25.
Just noticed while driving, all of the controls on the left side of the steering wheel are inoperable. these include the radio, bluetooth phone, information menu, reset, etc: upon further examination i also noticed the horn no longer works. unsafe and will not pass state inspection. inquiry by internet search indicate possible clockspring defect, but that is inconclusive so far.
Wipers turns on automatically when in the off position, same with ac, stereo resets by it self. this happens no matter what the shift position is. no matter if the car is running or in parking mode.
The fuel pump relay on the tipm module failed (total integrated power module). this for the 2012 jeep wrangler unlimited isn't part of a recall and it isn't something covered under the power train warranty. the jeep started turning off at low idle. this happened for backing out of a parking spot or at a stop light. it now happens when going down the road where the vehicle turns off at random. it isn't safe to drive until it is repaired. i am working on the repair now.
I just left work and had traveled less than a mile when my engine shut off. i was only traveling 20mph and coasted into the first open driveway i could find. i opened the hood to a lot of smoke and a small fire from my wiring harness. my 2012 jeep wrangler sport is completely stock and always maintained through my local jeep dealership. the official word from jeep was that my starter shorted out which caused my wiring harness to overheat and catch fire.
The sudden failure of turn signals, windshield wipers, headlights, taillights, brake lights and all controls on the two stalks and the steering wheel. i do not know when it happened and realized it when i noticed the lack of sound and blinking dash light on using the turn signal. no fuses were blown.i do not drive in the dark much.i am having it repaired today. the service writer said it was a computer. how can jeep tie so many essential controls together? if it had occurred at night in the rain it could have been catastrophic. perhaps it has already happened to someone.
Air bag light came on while driving down a local city street. took it in to the dealership and it was diagnosed as a faulty clock spring rendering the air bag inoperable. my complaint is that nhtsa already has 2 recalls on this problem but for right hand drive wranglers only. my jeep has the same problem, concerning the same parts, for the same reasons the right hand drive air bag failures occurred. jeep refuses to cover my jeep under these recalls. nhtsa campaign number: 13v176000 and nhtsa campaign number: 11v528000
On 04/09/16, the wipers stop working while driving, and drivers side headlamp stays on continuously, and on high beam. have to unhook battery terminal in order to get light to go out. was told the tipm totally integrated power module has failed.
I was having electrical issues with my 2012 jeep wrangler. specifically my windshield wipers were not working. it was snowing outside and they just wouldn't work. i had to manually get out of my car several times to clear the snow before i made it home. i got the motor replaced but it they still were not working. i took it to the dealer and they said that my entire tipm (totally integrated power module) "went bad". they told me that the could not order the part because its on back-order. i called jeep and they said that the part was on back order with no estimated time of delivery. the tipm controls all of the electronic controls on my vehicle and i can not drive without it. it is a 2012 so i am surprised that this part is failing, let alone unavailable from the manufacturer. furthermore the part alone is $850 and not covered under warranty. i did some research online and it looks like there was a class action lawsuit filed against chrysler/jeep/dodge for this part being defective but it only covered certain makes/ years.
Tipm failure. the tipm needed to be replaced because it wasn't operating the engine cooling fan (radiator fan). the cooling fan module also had to be replaced. i understand a failed tipm could cause airbags to deploy inadvertently, window opening failure, random horn alarms, stability control problems, and more. an engine trouble light came on while driving. the dealership explained the power distribution module (part number 68244883aa) and the cooling fan module (part number 68143894ab) had to be replaced because they had failed.
There seem to be a number of electrical issue mostly around the door locking failure; the horn and the touch radio
Airbag clockspring was replaced under recall m031 in early 2012. the part recalled had failed again causing airbag light to be illuminated, loss of speed control, loss of steering wheel audio controls, loss of horn, and loss of "step" and "reset buttons for the information center. this issue started out when turning the steering wheel in the left or right position and within a few weeks has became a constant problem to no avail.
12 jkru 52,000 miles. it first happened at night while wife was driving on interstate jeep went crazy mode all lights in cluster illuminated warning lights flashing and with hot oil msg, warning dings going off, heard electric fan running . it seemed that nothing was controllable, auto trans went into and would not shift out of first gear. scared the hell out of my wife. got home after shut off i tried to restart but nothing happened. i disconnected battery to reset cpu that did not work. i stopped by auto zone to get codes scanned . they told me every system was reporting failure and needs to go to dealer. after restart every thing was normal. after 100 yards down the street it all happened again. pulled into store parking lot, turned jeep off and would not restart till 4th try. drove it strait to dealer in first gear with all. they said that it was tipm and not under warranty, gave ma a rental car for 10 days because part is on back order. after 10 days chrysler quit paying for rental car and still have no part to fix jeep it has been 16 days. i guess there are alot of failures for the tipm causing back order and do not know when they will get one.
Yesterday when driving my jeep to the gas station all of the warning lights started turning on and the jeeps battery light turned on. knowing that it could be a problem with the alternator i headed home immediately. a block from my house in the middle of an intersection the battery finally died thankfully someone was able to push me out of the intersection because it was dark out and i didn't have any lights. i had the car checked and it is the alternator. i searched online and found that there is a recall for a pentastar 3.6 l v6 alternators but i'm being told that my vehicle is not included in the recall. by specifically excluding my vehicle from the recall they have risked my safety and the safety of those around me.
The tipm unit went out, causing lots of issues. the issues we're aware of are: the doors wouldn't lock, shifter was stuck in park, radio/cd/bluetooth wouldn't work, and the front headlights wouldn't turn off leading to a complete drain of the battery. thankfully, the vehicle was parked and this didn't happen while we were driving it (it could have been very dangerous if it did). it cost us $1100.00 to replace the tipm unit, which was a huge financial burden on us, but even worse was that we had to go without the jeep (one of our main means of transportation) for almost two months because there's a waiting list for the replacement part. we checked with 3 different repair shops just to be sure, and all said the same thing: 1.) that there's a waiting list at least 40 people long for this tipm unit, and 2.) that they've been seeing jeep wranglers left & right for this same exact problem, and there's a waiting list because the part can't even be manufactured quickly enough to keep up with the demand. i know the tipm unit has been recalled for jeep cherokees, but why not jeep wrangler when this is clearly a major issue for it as well??
