Problems with 2006 Jeep Wrangler FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

On average, the 2006 Jeep Wrangler starts to “feel” problems with the FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM and its various aspects after 52 174 miles.

Recently reported FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM problems on 2006 Jeep Wrangler

When filling the wrangler with fuel, the tank consistently and regularly overfills and spits fuel out of the top of the fuel tank towards the gas pump nozzle, the person filling the wrangler, the exterior of the wrangler, and onto the floor next to the wrangler. there is a tsb for repair of this issue, but my year is not automatically covered by that tsb. please help.

When filling up the fuel tank, it will either click-off every 2 tenths of a gallon or spill fuel out when attempting to fill at the slowest rate. there are no kinks or etc in the filler pipe or vent pipe.

During pumping of gasoline into the tank when the tanks fills, gas spews from the tank everytime. this does not happen with either of the other 3 jeeps that i own. this causes a potential for fire and/or injury due to gasoline splashing on hands, arms and clothes.

When i fill up with gas at a station, after the pump clicks, about a pint of gas splashes out of the filler and down the body onto the ground.

Jeep wrangler 2005 and 2006. when filling the gas tank at the gas station, gasoline will overflow momentarily, spilling gasoline on the ground from the gas tank filler tube when the gas pump fuel nozzle shuts off. this has happened on the 2005 and 2006 model year wranglers i have own(ed). reviewing comments on the internet this is a common problem with these model years. an additional problem is the internal sticking (due to internal valve plug expansion) check valve that causes spillage also may not permit proper fuel filling.

Gas tank blows out a large amount of gas after filling up.

When filling the fuel tank to full gasoline will shoot out of the filler hole and over the side of the vehicle. the problem is consistent (i can only recall 4 times when it did not occur since i purchased the vehicle in 2015 with 82,000 miles on it. in all cases the vehicle was stationary, engine was off, parked next to the gasoline pump.

Jeep wrangler x 2006 automatic. sthall while running in highway .then would not start ,no crank. no fuel pump start , no panel indicators working. shows a 06- 02 code error in panel. mean fueling calibration error. 3 or 4 days later it start like new.

When refueling the vehicle, gasoline with shoot out of the fuel fill when the tank is nearly full. from speaking with other jeep wrangler unlimited owners (2005 & 2006 models only), this issue is commonplace and unaddressed by jeep. it is reportedly due to a design flaw in the overflow value in the filler tube. each time this happens, approximately 1/4 of gasoline will flow out of the tank before the gas pump clicks off. this has exposed me to gasoline on my skin, as well as spilled fuel on the ground. there is risk due to exposure to ethanol and other chemicals, environmental exposure with gasoline on the ground, and fire risk.

Every time i fill my jeep, it overflows and spills fuel all over the side of my jeep and the ground before the rule pump shuts off. i have this issue with every fill up at any fuel station i use. it will sometimes overfill and spill enough out as to necessitate the use of a fuel spill cleanup kit and i've had several shoes and pants ruined from spouting fuel. i have had several other jeep wrangler owners of the same year and model complain of this exact problem. i feel this is not only an environmental problem, but a fire safety problem as well. it cannot be safe to have a system that overfills and spills gasoline every single time you fill your vehicle creating a significant risk of fire.

2006 tj fuel overflow when filling tank. fuel spits out of gas tank on to person holding the gas handle pump when filling. auto is off and stationary. it happens every time.

I have a 2006 jeep wrangler tj i bought used have had it going on 6 months and everytime i go to the gas station and fill up when the pump kicks off the gas spews out all down the side of my jeep flares and the jeep itself and down onto the ground when i filled it up the first time it was all over my hand my leg and ruined my shoes!! i got on a jepp forum and was told to get a gmc filler hose with a check valve and i did and paid to have it installed and i still have the same issue. i have done a lot of research on the internet and i am not alone here this is a huge issue and it is going to lead to someone getting hurt or worse killed!! is this what it's going to take for you to fix this problem with the wranglers? i sure hope not!! this is beyond ridiculous and needs addressed and fixed asap.....

Every time i fill my jeep with gasoline, when it reaches it's capacity, gas spews out of the filler tube and onto the rear fender flare and subsequently onto the ground. this is not a new issue with these jeeps and it is a fix that should be done by the manufacturer due to the obvious safety concerns. this is a fire hazard and could cause serious injury if not corrected. this happens every time i fill the vehicle up with gas and it's ridiculous.

Gas spills out when filling tank instead of click gas pump off automatically

My jeep wrangler spews gas on every fill up. ruined pants, shoes. fear gas is going to ignite from hot exhaust. does every every time. someone going to get hurt seriously. everyone is purchasing gm filler tube with flapper to replace jeep filler. done so frequently can't get part. jeep could fix easily installing 20 dollar filler tube or putting new valve in tank. this is serious.

When you fill up the gas tank the automatic stop doesn't work and the gas spills out all over the place. i bought the jeep used on july 11, 2014, and i just have never done anything about it. when i bought it, it had 35,000 miles, now i have 70,666 miles. i went online and on the jeep forum and youtube some people had fixes by buying a gm new fuel filler hose part #15131046 and replacing it and it seems to have worked. according to what i've read the warrenties were extended for 2007 and over but not the 2006's.

Fuel pump does not shut off when full causing about 10 ounces of fuel to spray on me and on the ground. it also drips down the paint which can cause issues down the road over time

While fueling and before the pump automatically shuts off, fuel sprays out of the filler neck, runs down the fender and onto the ground. this is not just randomly it happens at every fill up.

2006 wrangler unlimited (rubicon) overfills with gasoline before the pump stops. about a cup of fuel, does not matter which gas station or how fast the tank is filled. it has been doing this since i purchased it from jeep dealer in 2013.

Just purchased this jeep from a dealership and when i fill up the tank with gas it overflows every time spilling gas all over the ground and over the drivers rear quarter panel. it is hard to stop the overflow due to the gas coming out, danger of fuel getting on my clothes which then makes me flammable and smell like fuel. there is always the danger of fuel getting in my eyes as well, i do not feel safe with this flaw. i don't believe that all of the 2005 and 2006 jeep owners should have to dish out $900 for a new fuel tank that will fail again anyway because the icv valve will just fail again. this is a stationary issue when filling the gas tank. can't believe that spilling gas on the ground every time is that good for the environment.

While fueling my 2006 jeep wrangler, the fuel failed to stop dispensing when the tank was full. this resulted in fuel spewing out from the tank. the fuel got on me as well as the jeep and the immediate surrounding areas. i have fueled the jeep at multiple gas stations with the same result. fuel spilling out from the tank is a serious fire, environmental, and health hazard. after reviewing the nhtsa's website as well as other reputable sources, this seems to be a very common problem/complaint. i'm aware that the 2007 and newer jeeps have a recall to fix this problem. i failed to realize how such a common and serious problem can be ignored in the 2006 jeeps.

The jeep has what has been termed the jeep death wobble. the jeep is all stock, not lifted at all. i have fired the parts cannon at the jeep...all the work has been performed by factory trained technicians using oe parts. i have changed the tires twice in 20,000 miles. the jeep gets a terrible wobble on the highway at 55mph (speed limit on 465 in indianapolis) and can only be brought under control by stopping the vehicle. even though i have never been in an accident caused by the excessive wobble, it is definitely not safe to come to a complete stop on the highway. it's not always easy to pull over to the side of the road on a busy interstate highway. the fuel filler neck often overflows when filling the fuel tank also. there was a recall on some jeeps for this same problem. however, the jeep dealership said my specific jeep doesn't qualify for the fixing of the issue. it is definitely not safe to have a fuel filler neck that doesn't stop the fuel nozzle from flowing.

When sitting still with the engine off and putting gas in my 06 jeep wrangler, the gas pump does not kick off quick enough when the tank is full and spills gas down the side of the jeep and onto the ground creating a very dangerous fire hazard - if you are not standing back, it will splash gas onto your clothes which could be a dangerous personal hazard with the potential of burns to a persons body. getting in and out of a vehicle produces static electricity and could be enough to start a fire with the jeep and potential danger to people and property. the jeep will "burp" gas everytime that you fill it - this has happened on numerous occasions. i do not even fill the tank and let the pump kick off anymore for this reason - it is a dangerous situation if you wait for the pump to kick off.

When fueling the vehicle, when the tank is full and the gasoline nozzle shuts off, approximately one cup of gasoline comes out of the vehicle filler tube and sprays the area around the filler inlet and down the side of the vehicle. this event occurs regardless of the rate of fuel flow. this event occurs when the filler nozzle turns off automatically or when the user manually controls the rate of fuel. this problem has been diagnosed by fca as a defect in a plastic valve located in the vehicle's fuel tank that reacts negatively with gasoline additives, specifically ethanol. fca does not consider this to be a safety issue. as the vehicle owner, i consider the fact that the vehicle spews gasoline out at me while refueling to be a safety issue and request that the national highway traffic safety administration takes steps to require fca to resolve this issue before someone is burned. thank you. *tr updated 9/15/15*cw *cn

When fueling the vehicle, the fuel splashes back at near full. the fuel leaks down the plastic fuel door area and onto the painted finish on the body. i have had it splash back onto myself, also. there is supposedly a faulty flapper valve inside the filler hose before the fuel enters that tank. this is a known issue on the 97-06 wranglers.

The filler neck doesn't close fast enough when filling the gas tank, thus resulting in gas spewing out onto the jeep (consequently fading any fender you have installed) and onto your person. as per several car mechanics' consultations, the ethanol in gas is/has eroded the filler neck and it can't close in time. apparently the issue was addressed in later models of the jeep wrangler. it is a nearly $600 fix (including labor). temporary solution: only put about $25 in the gas tank at a time (which is inconvenient is you are constantly traveling).

Tank overflows when filling up with fuel. pump auto shut off does not work on this vehicle at any station. always get fuel overflow. *tr

2006 jeep wrangler unlimited after getting fuel filled i pull out of station and it starts hesitating and then stalls in middle of street. it nearly caused an accident from car behind me i had to restart and it would stall and bog few more times then run ok. today i fueled up and pulled out of station at a 6 lane divided road with an interstate with on and off ramps both sides so i had only 100 feet to cross three lanes to get into left turn lane for interstate as this lane goes under and at light turns left to on ramp, just to give you insight on situation, i fuel up pull out and it shuts off cars have to stop i am in middle of three lane dead in the water it starts back up and i pull up thank god a safe distance to car in front of me and it bogs down and the surges making the jeep thrust forward had to brake hard no accident was caused but god forbid it could have please research this. *tr

During the refueling process fuel will spray out of the nozzle spaying me and the vehicle. this happens without warning and will take you by surprise if you are not careful.this happens every time i have been reading about this problem with this year of jeep and it seems as if there are a lot of vehicles involved with this problem for the year i own. google "gas spill problems jeep 2006" and you will see. *tr

When filling the fuel tank the fuel filler hose fails to stop the flow of fuel coming back out of the tank. this results in fuel spilling on the ground and down the side of the vehicle.

Filling gas got sprayed with gas on face hands and arms my skin burned i smelled like gas for a long time this is a major safty.. gas on ground on vehicle had 3 jeep wranglers all had same problems .do i have to die.. plus gas causes cancer. filling gas every 3 days geting spayed with gas.. breathing poison gas fumes. death wobble front end .plus fire risk. we need.help. now. if there is class action lawsuit look me up. safty first. help us. *js

When filling up tank, fuel comes pouring out when tank is done being filled

When filling the fuel tank it always overflows. it does not matter the station or how the pump is in the tank. it always shoots gas out before it kicks off. i think this is a serious fire hazard and i also can spray fuel on the person filling. it sounds like this is an ongoing issue with this model and nothing has been done???

When filling the fuel tank, the fuel overflows and spills gas on the ground. this is a defect in the overflow valve in the gas tank that causes pressure to build when the tank is near completely full during a fill-up. many other jeep owners have had the same problem according to the online jeepforum.com, wranglerforum.com and others. a recall is necessary to prevent possible fires and explosions. many other jeep owners have experienced this problem with both tj and jk wranglers. some have replaced the fuel overflow valve and solved the problem. *tr

Severe fuel spit back when filling up my jeep wrangler. gas spilled all over the vehicle and ground! *tr

Gas tank overflows at the gas pump, spiting fuel everywhere. also while filling, the pump constantly shuts off as if the fill neck of the jeep is overflowing. i have to barely hold the pump in the on position in order to fill and it still overflows. this problem is dangerous and needs to be addressed. *tr

Every time the gas is filled, fuel overflows and pours onto the vehicle, ground and whomever is standing near it. *tr

Obviously there are many complaints yet you guys are ignoring them. you fill up with gas and at top off it spits gas out that gets all over the person filling clothes. this is a major problem that you need to get off your asses and get this problem resolved before someone gets hurt. i purchased this vehicle recently and filled up 5 times and this occurred everytime. fix it! *tr

When filling the fuel tank the pump cuts off to late and creates splash back and pours gasoline on the ground and all over whoever is near by. *tr

Fuel pump will not shut off when the tank is full resulting in gasoline spilled on the vehicle and all over the ground. *tr

When fueling the fuel overflows every time. this can not be safe. *tr

I bought a used rhd 2006 wrangler sport in nov. 2013 for $18,500.00.........and you guys will not fix the gas tank that blows gas out while you are filling it, i lose at least a half a gallon of gas each time i fill it up, and it leaves a huge puddle on the ground and one time someone is going to throw a lit cigarette in it or ignite it is some way and people are going to get hurt........... i am sooooooooooooooooo upset over this, and the reason you won't fix it is because it is a rhd fleet vehicle.......it is my regular car, and i drive it everywhere, and if anything happens i will sue you until there is no tomorrow. *tr

While filling the gas tank the pump never shut off causing gas to spill everywhere. faulty check valve in fuel tank. should be recalled. *tr

When filling the gas tank, it will overflow, spilling gas on the side of the jeep wrangler, the tire and the ground. it seems like the flapper valve in the filler neck isn't preventing spills. it happens everytime i've filled up, so i try not to fill the tank anymore. i believe it's a serious safety and fire hazard. one spill was so big, the gas station employees had to use kitty litter to soak it all up

Gas pumps will not fill vehicle properly. gasoline spills from filler neck across back end of vehicle whenever i fill vehicle with fuel. *tr

I purchased this jeep used and the very first time i filled the fuel tank, gas spewed profusely from the tank opening without triggering the nozzle to stop as the tank was approaching full. this causes gasoline to spray all over the vehicle, the pump, the operator, and to puddle on the ground. this same scenario has played out at every gas station i have visited since. the only solution is to try to guess when the tank is close to full and stop the pump prematurely. this is a serious safety and environmental issue that warrants immediate correction from the manufacturer. i contacted the previous owner of the vehicle and she stated that the same fuel overflow problem was present the entire time she owned the vehicle. in speaking with other jeep owners, this is a very common problem with 2005-2006 jeep wrangler models and has even resulted in at least one class action law suit. please help prevent a future catastrophe and take action on behalf of the consumer asap.

When filling up the gas tank, gas will pour out when it's full/overfull and sometimes spray gas everywhere. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 jeep wrangler. the contact stated that after adding fuel to the vehicle, the fuel pump automatically shut off and fuel sprayed out of the filler neck. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. the mechanic stated the fuel purge valve had to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

When refilling my gas tank the gas pump does not shut off and gas spills out with force causing gas to spill all over the place (myself, jeep & the ground). this is a very common problem with 2006 wranglers (tj & lj) & jeep finally needs to do something about this for these models as well. these were the wranglers that tested some of the new parts for their jk models that came out in 2007 to present. a recall has been issued for the 2007 & newer models for this same problem. how about fixing where the problem started at originally. thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *jb

Fueling this vehicle is extremely difficult and dangerous due to the fact that no mater how slow you try to pump fuel into it shoots back up the tanks fuel pipe and onto the ground and on you if you are not careful. this fuel system has an obvious flaw. no vehicle should be this difficult to fuel. in 40 years of driving i have never had anything like this with any other vehicle. i won't let anyone else put fuel in this 2006 jeep wrangler because i'm afraid a serious accident could to easily occur. *tr
