The vehicle's front brakes have been replaced five times in under 24000 miles. *nm the consumer was informed that chrysler had no fix for the problem. the consumer requested a full refund for the money he spent on repairs. the front brake rotors were warped and the pads were low. *sc *jb

Consumer complaint regarding safety concerns 2002 jeep grand cherokee braking system. *ts the vehicle rotors warped prematurely and resulted in vibration while braking. *nm

Bought jeep grand cherokee sept 2002 new in june 2003 rotors warped and had to be replaced 10000 miles on auto the brake pads were fine.nov 2004 rotors are warped again this is a known problem with chrysuler and they will not fix the problem.again the pads are fine.they are passing this defected rotor on the consumer i would like to know what are my options if i even have any to get this problem fixed. thank you. *ak

Dt: contact states the rotors on the vehicle warp and cause the vehicle to shake. the rotors have been replaced 4 times, they need to be replaced for the 5th time.*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 60 mph, the steering wheel would vibrate when the brake pedal was depressed. the dealer stated that the rotors were warped and they replaced the rotors and brake pads. approximately eight months later, the failure recurred. the dealer stated again that the rotors were warped. the contact stated that the failure occurred every eight months. the vin was unknown. the failure was mileage 12,000 and current mileage was 25,000.

2002 jeep grand cherokee se- brake vibrations and front end shimmers with high speed brakeing with only 28000 miles. dc and jeep warrenty will not cover new brake rotors and pads to resolve issue.

When applying the brakes, the brake pedal would pumped up and down and the steering wheel would shimmy up and down and to the left and right. the higher the speed the worse the problem. when i brought it to the dealership i insisted that the service manager take a ride with me. he only had to drive it a short distance before he knew exactly what the problem was. he said the rotors were warped. i asked if that was normal, especially with such low mileage. he told me that it was an ongoing problem that chrysler new about. when the rotors heated up they were not cooling down properly due to a defect which in turn causes the rotors to warp. he said they instructed to tell owners that the problem was due to wear and tear and that it was not covered by the warranty, therefore passing the expense on to the customer. he also told me that if the customer complained to chrysler, and only then, would chrysler fix the problem at no charge and would put the repairs under a "good will warranty". the service manager said he would not put me through the trouble and automatically put it under the "good will warranty". especially since i have had numerouse other problems with the jeep since the first day i drove it off the lot. i've had the check engine light come on 4 times. each time it was a different deffective part. i've also had electrical problems which caused the dome lights to flash on and off, all sorts of beeping noises and numerous other distractions in the interior. it's also left me stranded on the new jersey turnpike *ak

2002 jeep grand cherokee with defective brake rotors. customer states that she has had the brakes repaired and replaced on 2 separate occasions. consumer wants reimbursement for the repairs. *kb

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving 40 mph, the brake pedal and steering wheel pulsated when the brakes were applied. the rotors were previously regrounded at the dealer, however, the failure continued. the dealer replaced the brake pads and rotors. the failure mileage was 14,131 and current mileage is 32,899. updated 01-15-08. *kb updated 12/12/07. *jb

Bought a new 2002 jeep grand cherokee [xxx] the ft. brake rotors have warped for the second time in 30,000 miles. driving with these warped rotors causes the steering wheel to shake violently and brake application at the wheels to be uneven. this is a very unsafe condition especially on wet or icy surfaces. the dealer refuses to replace the rotors under warranty. a call to chrysler customer service produced the same result, no warranty replacement. the dealer & manufacturer insist on calling this a "worn brake" problem when in fact it is the result of defective brake rotors. it should be noted that the ft pads & rotors were replace once already under warranty at 11,000 miles due to warped rotors, the pads at this time show less than 50% wear. this is the same problem that effected 1996 grand cherokees, that defect resulted in an official recall and reimbursement for those who have paid to have the defective rotors replaced. i feel this series of grand cherokee warrants the same recall. this is a serious safety issue. *ak updated 07/25/2012 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Vehicle vibrated. dealer stated that once the rotors get wet they cause the vehicle to vibrate.*ak

Dealer replaced at 14,000 miles the front rotors and pads. at 20,000 miles fronts rotors were resurfaced, and at 26,000 miles rotors were resurfaced once again. *ak

Applying brakes lightly at speeds in excess of 45 mph causes vehicle to vibrate excessively and pull off a straight line. the vibration has been increasing for sometime but the pulling caused me to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle due to safety concerns if the brakes were required in an emergency situation. the jeep service center claimed warping of the rotors as they have for all other cases. this seems to be a defective part.*ak

Vehicle front wheels shimmied violently at highway speeds when brakes are applied. vehicle has only 20,000 miles and is a 2002. dealer says not under warranty even though it has a 3yr, 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. dealer stated front rotors are warped and need replaced at my cost. *la

Calipers, rotors, pads. this is at least the 3rd time i have had to have my brakes totally repaired since i purchased my 2002 jeep grand cherokee larado new in 9/2001. i am a "highway" driver so i use my brakes very little. i have had warped, scored, blue rotors several times, glazed pads and sticking calipers. i am not the only person with this problem. many, many others have listed the same problems with their similiar vehicles. my service department say "it is the nature of the beast". this is not a good reason for these failures. there has been no recall on this subject and i feel it is time that there is one. i have had several "near wrecks" while braking due to one or the other side "grabbing" or taking forever to stop. (not speeding) i want and need results! i have an extended warranty but that takes care of the calipers but not the rotors or pads that have been damaged by the calipers. duh! does that sound right? help!!!!*ak

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jeep grand cherokee. while driving approximately 60 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle vibrated excessively when the brake pedal was depressed. the failure was continuous and occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they replaced both front brake pads under warranty. the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer and independent mechanic on separate occasions for replacement of both front brake pads and rotors at the contact's expense. there has been no resolution and the vehicle has not been properly repaired. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 12,000 and current mileage was 55,000.

At approximately 30,000 miles, the vehicle developed a vibration/pulsation during moderate braking. the dealer said there was a service bulletin on this problem and replaced calipers, pads and rotors. at 50,000 miles the problem returned. this time, the dealer said it was my problem, and they could do nothing about it other than turning the rotors. the problem dissipated somewhat after having the rotors turned, but has returned and is more pronounced at 53,000 miles. the vehicle can be somewhat difficult to control at highway speeds during moderate to hard braking. *ak

Pulsation sensation while braking. first noticed between 6000 -8000 miles and less than 12 months. dealership said nothing wrong. approx 10000 miles and over 12 months dealership replaced warped front rotors. no charge this time. approx 15700 miles and 16 months dealership again repllaced warped front rotors. charged for 12 months/12000 mile warranty. dealership admitted this was a common problem on vehicle. no permanent solution offered.*ak

Front brake rotors warped prematurely. as a result, when applying brakes extended stopping distance occurred. *ak

While braking the vehicle shimmied. the dealership informed the consumer that the brake rotors were warped. *ak the consumer also experienced this same problem when driving on mountain curves. there was a clunk sound coming from the rear when the vehicle was stopped, as if something was moving forward. the driveshaft was removed along with the lube slip joint. *sc *jb

We have had 3 front brake rotor incidents in 3 years with a caliper/rotor replacement @ 8,000 miles. front rotor resurfaced somewhere around 20,000 miles and replaced again at my own expense at 28000 miles. the problem was severe enough to frighten my wife (she is the primary driver of the 2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo) because of severe steering wheel shake and brake pedal pulsation when the brakes are applied. most severe when entering the off ramp on the interstate. i kept the old rotors that the dealer installed at 8,000 miles. the dealer was not willing to replace the brake components the last time saying that they are "wear items" and i was past the 3 year warranty. obviously there is a heat problem with the brake components. most likely cause would be calipers failing to release or some type of restriction to the brake fluid returning to the master cylinder. i know of one other owner of a jeep grand cherokee with similar problems. *nm

I recently had my 2002 jeep grand cherokee rotors replaced at about 20,000 miles due to severe shimmers in my steering column when the brakes were applied.t all started at about 12,000 miles. now i have 25,000 miles and the shim is starting once again jeep must install the lowest quality rotors on the market and its not safe. *ak

2002 jeep grand cherokee front rotor problems.*mr the vehicles rotors have been replaced three times in 25 months due to rotor degradation. *nm

The brake rotors on the jeep grand cherokee go bad anywhere from 6000 to 15000 miles. my first set lasted 9500 miles and were replaced free of charge by the dealer because they told me they were defective. the second set only lasted about 6700 miles, and they had to be resurfaced. after complaining to diamler chrysler directly, i only had to pay a 50 dollar deductible, which i shouldn't have had to pay at all, being that jeep rotors and defective, and they seem to admit to the problem, but won't do anything to fix it. i don't think it is right that the costurmer should have to pay for a problem they refuse to fix. i only have 16000 miles on my grand cherokee, and i have had rotor problems twice already. something should be done about this.*ak

For the past month, my steering shimmies and vibrates while braking.i almost have to floor the brakes to slow down or stop. i feel a major difference in my brakes over the past month. i have contacted a jeep dealorship and am taking it there on may 28, 04 to have it looked at. *mr

Electrical problems, check engine light, beep under dash, dome lights coming on, radio goes off, all dash lights(abs, brake,etc.). transmission problems 3 times in shop for slipping and leaking seals. leaking at pan, output seal and, drive train they changed seals and 1 month later output seal was leaking again. govern assembly was replaced 8/3/03 along with solenoid, transduce. faulty batteries. shocks all leaking but they replaced 1 front 1 back. *jb

The brakes have always been weak, however at 26,000 miles i had to have the brakes resurfaced. my mechanic has the same vehicle and he told me that this was a defect with the brake system, and that eventually the brake system would have to be replaced. now at 33,000 i need to have the rotors replaced. i have been told every few thousand miles i would have the same problem.*ak

Purchased new 2002 jeep grand cherokee, brakes began pulsating mildley at 15,000 mi,moderately at 20,000mi & severe at 25,000mi. dealer refused to repair, said there had been no recalls reguarding brakes.*ak unless jeep or the dealership offers to fix i will buy toyota or honda for my next vehicle.

Vibration in brakes...weak brakes. i have had them resurfaced at 26,000 and now need to have the rotors replaced at 32,000. i have already been told that this will not correct the problem and that my brakes will need to be completely replaced.*ak

The rotors and brakes were replaced @ 9200 miles due to severe vibration and pulling of the steeling when braking. this reoccured at 16000 miles, the dealership that this would be the "last time" they replaced them. now again at 23,000 the steeling is shaking and pulling. i have a difficult thinking that it is "driver error" that is causing the breakdown.*ak

I have had the rotors on my 2002 jeep replaced 3 times. the vehicle has only 23,000 miles on it. currently there is a service bulletin for rotor replacement. any thoughts of a recall on these rotors?? *jb

2002 jeep grand cherokee 4wd 4dr taken in because of brake failure. was told drums had warped and to permanently fix problem would be $800.00. to temporarily fix it was, $119.99, but the problem could come back. my claim is that there are problems with the vehicles' front brakes and that after as little as 5,000 miles, the steering wheel and front wheels "shake" and that drivers encounter severe vibrations through the steering wheel, floor, seat and pedals when the brakes are applied. *ak

Car has 14,000m, the steering wheel shudders at 50mph when brakes are applied. at 5-10mph they can be felt grabbing an releasing.*ak

Brakes pulsate and shake the entire vehicle under light braking pressure at highway speeds, dealer informed that vehicle missed build date to be covered under warranty by 25 days. *ak

While my daughter was driving our 2002 jeep grand cherokee on slippery roads she slid into an intersection and was hit by another vehicle. my daughter claimed she was going slowly and when the brakes were applied felt a shudder and the car did not stop. to check her story we took the car to a brake shop. they told us the brakes were defective. they could tell by the very uneven wear. 75% warn on 1 side of both front brakes. 25% wear on the other side . *ak

2002 jeep grand cherokee - i purchased the vehicle new in 2002. the steering wheel shakes and is hard to steer when brakes are applied above 50 mph. brakes pads and rotors were replaced at approx. 7,000 miles, rotors were resurfaced at 15,000 miles and at 18,000 miles the problem is back again.

My wife & i were driving on i-95 south when my jeep grand cherokee's check engine light came on but before we could do anything it shifted from drive to 2nd gear and went from 60mph to around 25mph while we were still in the 3rd inside lane of a 3 lane hwy so we proceded to pull off the hwy and check out the truck and also let it sit for awhile and in doing so the lite went off so we proceded to get back on and go straight home but as we tried to get on the hwy it happened again but this time we went from drive to 1st gear and we almost got rearended by an 18 wheeler but he moved over at the last second, where we got on there was no break down lane so we had to go for about a mile and in the process we started to loose the brakes do to problems ariseing from the abs and also the engine was acting funny it started to shut off then it would speed up and it did it 3 or 4 times so when we got off we had the jeep flatbeded to "greenwich jeep" in greenwich,ct. soon as it's fixed i'm getting rid of it but i did want to note the problem with you! *ak

Dt: consumer had to replace brakes, pads, and rotors 4 times in 9,000 miles. when applying brakes car will shake violently. *ak

Jeep engineered brake system for grand cherokee 2002 year results in steering shimmy when brakes are applied at high speed(50mph+). jeep does not cover under warranty after 12 mos or 12k mi. rotors have to be resurfaced at considerable expense

While driving at 65 mph engine failed. as a result, power steering and brakes malfunctioned. *ak took vehicle to mechanic but they couldn't find anything wrong. two hundred miles later, the same thing, nothing was found. at 6133 miles it happened again. consumer took vehicle to another mechanic. three different mechanics and no one could find anything. problem still exist. *ph

Dt: 2002 jeep grand cherokee. the consumer stated that the vehicle has 34,000 miles on it and the brakes have gone out twice. the consumer contacted the dealer, and they stated that they do not have a recall. the vehicle was taken to the dealer the first time and it was no longer under warranty. the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic, and they replaced the pads and cut the rotors. the problem occurred 20,000 miles later. the vehicle has not been into a mechanic this time. *ak *sc

1999/2002 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4x4(both) same problem(s). warped rotors/hub chrysler, south, milwaukee,wi replaced sets of rotors/pads on 1999 - twice/2002- twice so far. 2002 has 24,000, replaced when at 8500/18,000. chrysler just won't admit to problem. just replaced tires due to uneven front tire wear($300+) tired of it! tried to say i hadn't rotated tires. that's a joke - religiously rotate tires no more than 5,000 mi prior to each rotation. *ak

tires had to be replaced, and when the technician changed the tires, there was rust tearing up the chrome on the brake pads. this was compared to salt, wearing down the chrome. it was a safety hazard, considering the vehilce was only two years old.*ak

I had the front rotors replaced at 9000 miles due to brake pulsating. i now have 17000 miles on the vehicle and the brakes are pulsating again.*ak

On 9/9/03, the dealer says the rotors are warped again on my jeep. in 11/02, they supposedly replaced the rotors and calipers for the tsb. is is 9/03 and the rotors are warped again. the jeep has 17,000 miles. this is absurd.*ak

Like many other complaints i have just read, my 2002 jeep grand cherokee vibrates when i apply the brakes, especially highway driving (fast deceleration).*ak

I have a jeep grand cherokee that i bought new last september. i had trouble with the brakes. last march because it was necessary to pump them. the dealership said that i was probably defeating the abs, and that's why they depressed so far to the floor. today i was having a problem with the brake pedal squeaking. they told me it was "normal" and that it was the master cylinder. i asked if was normal, would it then be on most other jeep grand cherokees and they said they didn't know but thought it was. they then said that maybe there was a problem that jeep needed to know about. they are going to replace the master cylinder but i thought you should know because this seems to be ongoing. thank you. *ak

The brake rotors were serviced three times because the vehicle shook when driving or when engaging the brakes. dealer and manufacturer refused to make the repairs again.*ak

Brakes shutter when applied. dealer says warped rotors/ calipers, & pads need replacement, jeep is just out of warranty ,and they want a small fortune to repair a know defect. this is a safty issue that needs to be recalled. *ak

The consumer was driving the vehicle when the brakes began to pulsate when pumped. the vehicle was taken to the dealer the pads were replaced the pads and the rotors because of a seal leak. they also indicated that the brakes were not put on properly. the same problem exists again and they said that the rotors need to be replaced again. the manufacture has been contacted. *la
