Problems with 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On average, the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the UNKNOWN OR OTHER and its various aspects after 74 279 miles.

Recently reported UNKNOWN OR OTHER problems on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My transmission is going out. i just bought the car in january and i've been having a transmission problem for several months. i heard there was a recall on jeep cherokee transmissions. my car won't accelerate anymore when i drive. it won't switch gears and rpm will shoot up to 3 or 4. it does this every time it tries to switch gears.

On february 22, 2018 we brought our 2002 jeep cherokee in to merrick chrysler on sunrise highway in wantagh because my wife was advised of a security concern over the airbag unexpectedly deploying (which has already happened to her in an unrelated incident). after scheduling and waiting a couple of months we brought the car in and after 3 hours i was told they didn't have the parts and to call back. my wife refused to even sit in the car until it was fixed. i called the dealer and they refused to even give me a time frame on receipt of the parts or repair of the recall. within a few weeks thereafter i was at my wits end went to the dealership and purchased a newer jeep cherokee the was guaranteed not to have any problems but to this day i haven't received even a call regarding the repair which has now cost my family an additional $26,000.00, but it sure wasn't the way we wanted to get a new car. we have a gorgeous new jeep that she drives and i also purchased another car because i do not want to get hit in the head by a faulty air bag. please help us with our recall. seriously, enough is enough already. we have a gorgeous jeep in our driveway, registered and insured and undriveable, unless you can guarantee that if the airbag deploys we will have our own dealership if we live through the accident!! even more concerning is the disdain and importance with which we are treated. buy a new car they drool at your feet but god so help the poor old schmuck who shows up with some old clunker that they won't make a dime off of. please help us. its just not fair.

While driving or stationary the engine shuts down on me. it starts again after i wait about an hour or more. i bought this car from the original owner in december 2017. she had all the recalls fixed except for the airbag. since owning this car i have only driven it 3 times. granted i took a few months to put it on the road as the weather was cold. i've had extensive work done on it. tune up, new transmission, belts, pumps, coils, hoses and sensors you name it but it continues to shut off on me. i try to take it for a spin but just putting it in reverse it shuts off. can you please look in to this?

The automatic transmission shifts out of its gear as if the locking mechanism of the shifter is not working.

I reported this problem a month or so ago about the front driver's seat breaking and breaking off the vehicle frame. plus the a/c issue under the glove compartment overheats and melts the mechanism and continues to burn. when i reported the issue, no wreck was involved. since reporting the problem, the vehicle was involved in an accident and totaled. my fix apparently allowed the seat to stay on the frame but the seat still broke. fortunately, no serious injury, only sore neck and bump to the hand.

Contacted local jeep dealer, every time they put me off saying it is not apart of the recall and will not fix my problem. makes twice they have done so.

Last week i received a mailer for the n47 customer satisfaction notification. it advised that my best option for complying with the program would be calling the customer care hotline. i have tried many times, at various times during the day. the response has varied from "no answer" to a recording of "we are experiencing long wait times", followed by no answer. the vru also advised registering online @ myjeepauto.com. good luck with that - only a page of jeep ads and current incentives appears. the mailer advises that parts will be available sept. 15. why not advise as to when the customer care hotline, or website, will also be active - and responsive?

I have never been notified on any of the recalls on this jeep after looking at recalls airbags can deploy when driving then see in the recall this evening on the news.

airbag system(orc module i have been trying to get recalls on my jeep grand cherokee done ive dealt with the dealerships & chrysler with no result. i started recording calls& have set up a whole file just for transactions & correspondence regarding my cars recalls.i'm disabled & need my car since jan it has been in my garage. i couldn't believe my ears when i heard chryslers rep admit what they were doing to "get out of replacing recall parts" rendering my car useless i also read my car manual & it advised go straight to service, continuing to drive could result in accident or death with this warning. i called service told me to ignore was no recall open. jump ahead months showed recall but referred me to chrysler for part! i continued my battle & realized what was really going on & the rep. i spoke to confirmed what i thought was going on. he said he was so ashamed to be working for a company that would do this & repeatedly apologized as if to not be overheard.i can't fight chrysler alone.when i call for an appointment at service dealership the say part not in check with chrysler .i have a car that is a death trap sounds like they are waiting on older model cars to be traded in or got rid of so chrysler wont have to pay for recall parts! he said "your exactly right about that i feel so bad its not right & i really want to help people but i can only say what they tell us.he offered to email about my disability & maybe expedite me the part but stated it probably wouldn't help.they are holding out forcing people to drive unsafe cars or get rid of them in my case the airbag warning light is left on & will stay on until the defect is repaired. who would buy a car with the airbag warning light on & not be able to fix it! i need to get inspection and tags due or insurance will lapse.i hope you can help, best regards

Driver's seat detaches from car frame. electrical blower module resistor overheats, melts, and burns. both issues are known by consumers and dealerships, so there is no way jeep/chrysler doesn't know about the design flaws and the danger. driver's seat: there is a great deal of chatter on the internet regarding the driver's seat detachment from the car frame and the reason for it. people have created various fixes that may or may not work well. as added proof, it is impossible to find a jeep grand cherokee driver's seat in any junk yard. please go look for yourself. mine totally broke while on the highway, nearly causing a wreck. it's terrible and i do not understand why there hasn't been a recall and someone held criminally liable for this. blower motor module: lots of chatter on the internet as well as to the problem and the cause. mine melted and became so hot that i couldn't touch it without burning my hand - which i did. there is a fix, but you have to buy an upgrade module which still gets hot. also, the module turns the blower in reverse, so you have to reverse the leads. it's dangerous and again, i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall on it either and someone held criminally liable.

Freedom chrysler/jeep, lexington, ky could not provide a timely scheduling to fix the issue per the recall notice. i spoke with [xxx], service department who told me i would have to bring the vehicle in for an evaluation (not needed per notice and later conversation with chrsyler group recall assistance center. [xxx] told me not all vehicle needed to be fixed and that is the reason for evaluation, also not true per recall center. asked [xxx] to spoke to the manager, he forwarded my call. service manager had a little more knowledge about the recall, i thought until he told me it would be two months until they could schedule an appointment. reason cited was the chrysler were not providing the parts, also not true. he told me he would call back with an appointment date, that was several hours ago. i called the chrysler group recall assistance center and they were great. help me schedule an appointment with another dealership. my complaint is about freedom chrysler/jeep in lexington for providing false information about the recall. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Notice of problem from chrysler, some eight months ago and correction still not performed. *tr

In march, 2005, with 59,000 miles, my 2002 jeep grand cherokee overland, which i purchased new in august 2002, needed a new rear differential. a replacement was also needed at 80,000 (july 2006), 86,000 (march 2007), and 98,000 (april 2008). as of this writing, the dealer has had the vehicle for over 3 weeks. in replacing first the bearings, then the gears, and then the "entire rear end", they have been unable to solve the problem. attempts to contact chrysler have been unsuccessful. no one at the 800 numbers can offer any solutions. i have an extended warranty, so the repairs have been covered, minus my $100 deductible. but, i don't think the number of repairs is questionable. i've found a number of sites with other individuals reporting the same problem on this particular body style/model. perhaps there is a wide spread problem.. *tr

Window regulator in passenger side window went out. this is the 2nd time this has happened to my jeep grand cherokee. it is a 2002. the first was about 2 months ago when this problem happened with the driver side window. these have each cost me 300 dollars. the part is faulty and jeep owners should be compensated for having to pay for poor craftsmanship on the part of jeep.

Popping and creaking noises behind the dash when using the heating and cooling unit of the 2002 jeep with dual climate. sometimes doesn't seem to work correctly. *nm

Automatic climate control does not blow air at the same velocity from all vents. some vents get lots of air, some barely blow air at all. in addition, i have had this problem addressed twice, and still get hot air from driver and cold air on passenger when both should blow hot air. *nm

2002 jeep limited. winter of 2007 vents on passenger side only blows cold air. dashboard, windshield defroster and rear seat vents only blow cold air. major safety problem because cannot defrost front windows due to cold air. dealer states that they have been getting flooded with 2002 ltd's this year with this problem, and approximately 50% of 2002 jeep limited have this problem. it is caused by broken hinges on vent door under dashboard. cost to repair is over $1,000. *jb

My jeep grand cherokee has a bad ventilation system. this is a manufacturing defect which affects all jeep grand cherokee's manufactured with auto climate controls from 1999-2004. i have had to bring mine in for repair twice now, and it has once again failed. the levers in the ventilation ducts have plastic components which, over time, break down and crack causing cold-only or hot-only air to blow from the vents. this issue causes major fogging of the windshield at times depending upon how the levers get stuck, which is a serious and major safety concern- i have to pull over and wipe the windshield down so i can see. i lead a group comprised of over 1000 people who have formed expressly as a result of this matter; all of our vehicles are ailing, and rest assured, there are thousands more out there with this problem who probably aren't even aware our group united against daimler chrysler even exists. it would be in dc's best interest to issue a recall or settlement agreement before this turns into another class-action suit like they experienced with the 99-03 jeep grand cherokee brake rotor/caliper matter earlier in the year. *jb

Heater no longer working.. dealer found to be "faulty blend door" and "recir door". the issue causes windows to fog making it difficult to see while driving. i was quoted $1200-1600 to have repaired at dealer.. it's too expensive as i'm on a very limited budget... but very concerned about the safety of this vehicle*jb

2002 grand cherokee dual climate control lost heat in both zones. *ts the consumer stated the problem was due to the weak blend and recirculation doors in the hvac system. the doors are turned by a motor attached to the bottom of the door at the end of a hinge shaft. the motor stops turning when there is enough physical resistance from the door stopping against its housing. this puts stress on the shaft/door junction and over time strips the shaft so that it spins almost independently of the door. the motor then experiences little resistance and keeps turning. *jb

I am hearing a grinding sound under my dash which is one of the reported first system of a failure. *jb

I am contacting the nhtsa due to a design flaw in the hvac system of of 1999 - 2004 jeep grand cherokees. the cause of this problem is the exact same one that countless others have been in communication. who are experiencing this problem due to the weak blend and recirculation doors in the hvac systems. the doors are turned by a motor attached to the bottom of the door at the end of a hinge shaft. the motor stops turning when there is enough physical resistance from the door stopping against its housing. this puts stress on the shaft/door junction and over time strips the shaft so that it spins almost independently of the door. to address this problem, daimler-chrysler released tsb 2400104 - new hvac sub-assembly replaces blend or recirc door components. these new parts cost less than $200 according to the bulletin, but i find it hard to believe that daimler-chrysler expects their customers to pick up the tab on a design flaw. especially a design flaw that is so labor intensive that even though the parts are less than $200, the final bill will be in the $1,000 area. because it is no recall for this, the responsibility of this falls to the consumer, despite this being a very obvious case of bad design. there were no events leading up to this failure other than daimler chrysler selling a defective product to the public. a defect that effects a very basic necessity - heat. this failure results in not only an unacceptable comfort factor, but also effects visibility when hot air needs to be directed toward the front wind shield to eliminate fogging. as of this time, i am waiting for a response to this issue before i consider spending over $1,000 on a design flaw. *jb

2002 grand cherokee lost heat on both zones of the dual climate control. *ts the consumer feels that the manufacturer should fix the system free of charge. *nm

This is my 4th jeep. here is a little background on this issue. i purchased a 2002 jeep grand cherokee, the overland edition. the dealership pushed buying a used certified jeep vehicle! they mentioned the extended warranty that would take care of any issues that the jeep had during the last years of my ownership. i went in the dealership looking to purchase a new vehicle but they told me all the added benefits / value from buying from the used jeep facility! the warranty: as mentioned i purchased the warranty sold by jeep at the local dealership. the service agreement that was sold by the dealership went bankrupt! gary miller chrysler jeep isuzu located in erie, pa sold this to me. my 1st issue was when i decided to take the vehicle in because of a vibration while driving. i was made aware that the company was bankrupt when tying to call and find out what information will be needed when i go to the local jeep dealership in kansas city. furthermore i mentioned to the jeep dealership that pushed the contract that i am wiling to purchase the best contract to make sure i do not have an issue with my new vehicle in the future. the constant issues: i have now taken in my jeep for 6 visits! i have only included some of the payments (see the additional paperwork) but you can see a trend here. this jeep had been nothing but a problem since i purchased the vehicle! i am now stuck replacing the steering pump for the 2nd time! i have to pay for the replacement and live without a vehicle. i am out several thousand dollars and still have to take this vehicle (that jeep pushed on me) to the service shop about every 6 months. i just started driving my vehicle from the last service repair (i am getting very familiar to the local jeep dealerships) and still the item is not fixed and my jeep is leaking oil all over our company driveway. this vehicle is a lemon and the company that made the vehicle sold me a bankrupt contract. *nm

(1) i leased a 2002 jeep grand cherokee and have had it for 3 years. (2) 2 window regulators (2 different doors) have failed and all speakers have blown. when i purchased a replacement window regulator for $246.10(1st incendent) i saw that the manufactuer had reinforced the problem area that went wrong with both of my regulators; this tells me that the manufactuer is aware of the regulators failing. as for the speaker, i have been told by numerous car audio rep's that every time a jeep grand cherokee comes in that they have blown speakers(all 6); they go on to tell me that it is because the vehicle manufactuer placed an amplifier that is way to powerful for the speakers. my speaker failed at approx. 23,000 miles under normal use. (3)luckly, i am a trained mechanic and can make the repairs myself or the costs would have been much greater. i have had to purchase 2 window regulators at $246.10 ea and the speakers totaled $256.76 with a warranty. ** also, i would like to point out that when my regulators failed the windows just fell down inside of the door; this left my vehicle vulnerable to weather, theft and other safety factors.

2002 grand cherokee limited has a known problem with the dual climate control system. a door in the system routinely breaks or strips as soon as the vehicle has passed the manufacturers warranty end date. one side(drivers) of the system works as advertised, however the passenger side will only blow extremely cold air. the cost to rectify this anomaly is around $800 at a jeep dealership. from reading several automotive repair forums on the internet, this problem is occurring in a very high number, probably percentage of vehicles. supposedly jeep is aware of the defective part used in the system and is not doing anything about it. at what point is an auto manufacturer required to issue a recall? is there anything consumers can do to force the maker of the vehicle to fix defective parts?. *jb

The luggage rack on the top of the vehicle pulled out. the screws and the crush nut below pulled right through the hole for the screw. this was done as we were tightening a strap to hold on 2 pvc pipes on the top. the only way one can secure anything on the top is to strap it to the side rails. when the dealership said neither they nor chrysler would help with the repair costs, i contacted customer service with chrysler. the person i spoke to there was michael. he told me straight out that they did not care. when i told them it could come off or lose it's load on the road putting people at risk. he said the company did not care and would not help fix the problem to prevent it from happening again. this should have been a very simple fix, simply put a washer on top of the crush nut they use and the backing piece becomes too large to pull through the hole and thus gives the top a more secure footing and support. the company, however, does not want to fix the problem. they only want to put it back the way it was. it still is a hazard to anyone following if the rail comes loose and loses its load in transit. not to mention that the load is lost too. i don't want to be behind the jeep that loses the luggage this summer. when i spoke to the body shop person about the situation, he told me that ...yes, jeep advertises the top rail as a luggage rack but that it really isn't designed to be used as one. what kind of a deal is that? one person at the dealership told me that it was designed for downward pressure only. that is all well and good for putting weight on the rails, but how does one strap down the cargo to keep it up there without strapping it down using the side rails? i just can't get over the fact that no one seems to care that this can potentially kill someone! why not just repair it to not do that anymore? why not just stop manufacturing it that way in the first place?? the factory people ...

Purchased november 2001, had two recalls for fuel system within two months, dealer told me there was previous recall fixed before i purchased. engine safety warning light has come on and stayed on several days on seven (7) separate occasions. dealer claims not to worry cannot figure out why. plus seat heater went out and had to be replaced, interior heater stopped working except defrost. i believe they are all related and is why the engine safety warning light keeps coming on. also to note--vehicle sways back and forth over small bumps, like riding a small boat in rough water. *nlm

Rotor needs replacing every 7 months. improper rotor was put on the vehicle to start with. i can pay to have the proper one put on now. the cherokee shakes all over when you apply the brakes and is more difficult to stop. i have had a different rotor put on twice and chrysler will not repair it again.

Pulsation in the brakes, rotors warped, calipers replaced, suspension arm replaced, erroneous emissions/engine warning lights, erroneous tire pressure warning light. *nlm

Engine check light comes on, and vehicle will lose all power. contacted dealer. they replaced many parts, but could not solve problem. problem kept reoccurring. *ak
