Transmission shifts very roughly between 1-2 and 2-3 gears. *ak the vehicle was taken to the dealer twice but no solution was found. *yh

Disc brakes continually need work. rotors warp and must be turned every 10,000 miles! now the automatic transmission won't shift out of 2nd gear until the car is warmed up. what next? the brake maintenance alone has cost me nearly $2,000. this is a $30,000 vehicle and should not require this much maintenance! *la

Note: rental car. parked vehicle after backing up moderately inclined driveway. set transmission in park. did not set parking brake nor chock wheels. vehicle was stable for several minutes (brought one child into house) but then began to roll down hill. was not slipping on pavement; was not driving engine (as with standard shift.) could not stop vehicle by holding back. transmission was still in park, not dislodged (confirmed this fact). pulled parking brake and vehicle stopped (no harm no foul.) but did not expect vehicle with automatic transmission set in park to be mobile at all. did report this to rental agent when returning vehicle.*ak

While parked transmission jumped out of park and went into drive. vehicle took off, almost ran over driver, but was pulled out by a friend. nonetheless driver suffered a broke ankle and was treated at hospital. there was a lot of damage to vehicle. *ak

The vehicle was parked in garage; got out with door open to put material in car; vehicle slipped into reverse, backing out of garage; damage to driver side door, fenders and garage structure. similar reports of this accident as of 11/01 appear to be in excess of 60, based on review of nhtsa web site. need details on when recall will be requested. *ak

After being side-swiped i exited my vehicle leaving the engine running and the transmission in what i believed to be park. after a short time my vehicle, on its own, backed into another jeep parked in the intersection behind me. at the time i believed i left the transmission in neutral. sometime towards the middle of this year i read of a problem with this model stating the transmission failed to stay in park but the article further stated it was for model years up to 1999 only. subsequently i read that later models also had this problem (a flat spot between park and reverse causing the trtansmission to hold the vehicle in park without the detent locking it in park). with this information i tried to simulate the problem on my vehicle. to my surprise i could easily shift the transmission onto the flat spot without the park detent locking into park and with just the slightest touch of the shifting lever cause the treansmission to shift into reverse. this could only be accomplished with the engine running. i now question if the second part of my accident (my vehicle backing into the car behind mine) was caused by this design flaw in the transmission. i reported my findings to the dealer's service manager but was told "...to talk with the body shop that repaired the damage to my vehicle" (i did not tslk with the body shop as this solution sounded ridiculous).*ak

Vehicle was parked on incline of driveway. consumer started it up, got out while warmng up. when getting back in vehicle, it rolled down hill into garage door. dealer couldn't find an explanation.*ak the key woul not come out of the ignition although the vehicle was in park, roadside assistance put the lever in park again and the key could be removed. nlm

Consumer states while driving at highway speed, the vehicle became extremely dangerous when braking, and the vehicle began shaking violently, the rotors have been replaced 4 times due to warpage and the brake pads have been replaced once.*jb

I pulled my jeep out of the garage, while idling, i got out to go behind the jeep to close the garage door, when the transmission jumped out of park into reverse. i was hit and thrown to the back of the garage receiving many bruises and scratches. i then went to the emergency room and was checked out. my insurance agent came the next day and filed a report of the accident . the dealer from where i purchased the jeep was notified of the accident. the damage to the jeep, to the garage and its contents was in excess of $7000.00. in august 2001, i saw on cnn news jeep grand cherokee's were being reported for transmissions slipping out of gear. i wanted to report mine as well. thank-you ricky and nancy gerrin 8-13-01. *ak

Vehicle was parked in driveway. vehicle was running, and it was in park. consumer was walking away from vehicle, and vehicle came backward and pinned him between frame of garage and rear fender of vehicle. he said that a neigbhor came, and got inside of vehicle to release him. *ak *slc

While vehicle was in park and idling it jumped out of gear and started moving backwards. vehicle moved approximately 200 feet before crashing into a tree, causing $2,000.00 + damage. *ak the consumers insurance covered the cost of the vehicle repairs while the consumer paid the deductible. *yh

Transmission will slip out of gear and suddenly will go back into gear with a jerk. vehicle, sometimes will not go into gear at all. this happens intermittently. contacted dealer, and dealer looked at vehicle and replaced rear end, but did not remedy the problem. please add vin . *ak

While idling in park vehicle jumped into reverse, resulting in a collision. dealer inspected vehicle.*ak consumer states this happened on two different occasions, dealer can not find any problems. *slc

Transmission slips intermittently, won't shift properly and vehicle bucks. vehicle has been taken to dealer 7 times, cannot remedy the problem. problem started at 9000 miles.*ak

Consumer stated there was no indication of transmission fluid showing on the dipstick, the vehicle would downshift from drive to a lower gear, after 4 visits to the dealer it was discovered that the transmission vent tube was missing, which the factory failed to install.*jb

The quadra drive system includes the differential, transmission, and gerotor couplings and pumps. when the automatic transmission is shifting from one gear to the next it hesitates in neutral long enough for all the power to be transferred to the front wheels. when the transimssion does engage the next gear all of the power is transferred back to the rear wheels resulting in a loud thud. i do not know how the vehicle would respond when road conditions were not optimal. the manufacture response has been they have not been able to duplicate the problem.

My wife had her 2000 jeep grand cherokee in park on a fairly level surface, she got out of her vehicle to check on some young people. when she got ou a friend of hers in another suv yelled that her jeep was moving. she looked back the jeep jumped a curb ran over four 20 year old shrubs then hit a lamp post. the vehicle did not start moving until she was 20-30 feet from the jeep. i reported this to jeep, thay sent out an inspector who agreed with me that the jeep had to be in gear to be able to have enough momenteum to jump the curb and run over the shrubs and hit the lamp post. jeep denied that the vehicle was at fault, refused to repair small damage, thank god this did not happen in my drive way with my 28 month old girl anywhere near the jeep. this is a saftey problem and i need help. thank you. *ak

Intermitant, increasingly frequent, unexpected down-shifting and up-shifting at different speeds with associated transmission jerks and bangs of varying but severe intensity. dealer admits cannot repair vehicle after 5 attempts in last 11 months inspite of ongoing contact with manufacturer and replacement of all associated electrical and computer components. dealer admits vehicle is unsafe and will not release it. vehicle has been out of service for 37 days, including 21 days as of this writing since last return.

I picked up my vehicle during lunch and noticed the noise en route to airport (travel for work). 72 hours had lapsed before my return date. the car kept making a "revving" noise and ticked/clicked if i did not push the gas pedal down to accelerate quickly. it still makes that noise and the transmission (i was told by a non jeep mechanic) sounds like it is winding up fast even though the car is moving slow (like a 10 speed bicycle does when you have the gears adjusted incorrectly). i called the dealership when i returned and i was told that i needed to break in the vehicle because it had less than 100 miles. i also reported the noise on two occasions to a dealership in new britain,ct when getting mfg suggested service (documented on their svc forms). the 4 wheel drive gear also was stuck but loosened up after several uses.*ak

Vehicle experiencing problem with noise coming from differential. vehicle been in dealer's shop on two occasions, and problem still reoccurring. *ak when the gas pedal is pushed the noise occurs but when released it becomes quiet. when cruise control is used a different kind of noise occurs. *yh

Brake rotors are problem not corrected by dealers, transmisson same, unsafe vehicle. *ak

My jeep rolled up over my left leg while stopped in my driveway. i was leaving the vehicle to pick up mail. i slipped and next i knew, the cars front drivers tire was rolling up my shoe, leg and came to rest on my left hip. the paramedics were called and i was taken to the hospital. my car suffered no damage, i still own and drive it, but with the reports i have been reading, i wanted to add my story. my costs at the hospital were @ 500.00. *ak

Front rotors have been replaced 3 times/ were resurfaced once, and rear rotors were replaced once due to vibration in vehicle.*ak consumer stated that the pcv valve failed, fuel filter failed, and front shocks leaking fluid and replaced front shocks, also the transmission pan was leaking fluid, wiper blades were replaced.*yd

Rear differential: complete lockup at 55 mph !!! as i traveled down a county hwy to just outside of town after work. almost killed 2 pedestrians as the back end skidded 100 ft in complete lockup, dealer replacing the rear axle and looking at the front differential since it seems to have problems caused by this sudden failure of the back. brakes: i have had rotors turned 3 times (twice by dealer under warranty and once by independent shop) and since purchased complete new rotors and pads on all 4 tires work by midas due to severe pulsation when braking. i have noticed lots of complaints for exactly the same thing on internet. jay laszewski dt

Transmission will automatically with gear while driving.*ak the transmission started jerking between gears 1-2 and 4-3. the sunfoof screeches when closing. the fuel chime light comes on at quarter tank. the overhead computer reads inaccurately. *yh

Vehicle has an intermittent shifting problems. when slowing down, vehicle will jerk as it searches for gears. also, it shifts down one gear lower than it should. dealer has inspected vehicle 4 times, and could not find cause. *ak

This has been an ongoing problem, the rear axle has a whining noise at all speeds but really loud at 50 to 60 mph. i've had the dealer work on it six times the zone mechanic assisted the last two times and then they went into the frount end, there was nothing wrong with the frount axle. *ak

Excessive driveline whine at speeds above 55mph, when accelerating & decelerrating. very annoying/ unable to remedy situation with dealer. called jeep customer service. no help at all, dealer says normal.

The speed control will not hold a consistant speed, it will slowly drop in speed on level ground, down hill, and up hill. when the speed drops to a certain level the transmission will shift to a lower gear and then founder some more. the dealership doesn't seem to be able to find anything wrong with the unit from their computer checking. i have been to the dealership 4 times with no luck. *ak

The vehicle whines and howls due to defective differential. yh

No summary listed for above vehicle. *ak

Driveshaft and yoke are defective in the jeep grand cherokee. this is a known problem to chrysler and the refuse to fix it. i paid over $39000 for my vehicle, and i'm convinced that it is not safe at highway speeds. there are several class action lawsuits underway against jeep for this same problem. they have even set up complaint forums in some automobile review web sites. i would appreciate any help you may be able to provide in this matter. chrysler knows of the problem but after 4 service attemps they cant fix it. *ak

The first week i owned my brand new vehicle, it started clunking and jerking. several weeks later, they replaced the drive shaft. i continue to have similar and other problems with the transmission, gear shifting, brakes, etc...i inquired of the dealership whether or not there were any reported manufacturers defects and they said no. they lied.
