Problems with 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee POWER TRAIN

2000 grand cherokee jumps out of park in to reverse and accelerated injuring one. *jb

Transmission jumps while foot on brake.*ak

Brakes - rotors warp about every 9 to 12,000 miles. the rotors have been turned 3 times and are now in need again. transmission - the overdrive slips as it engages. tachometer shows the engine speed increasing as the od engages, than drops as it finally fully engages.

At the time i was experiencing problems from warped rotors which caused car and steering wheel to shake violently especially when exiting off freeway. my engine light would come on intermittently. i was told "the tech could not verify at this time. tech turned off light". car was under warranty, 17,747 miles and two years old. five years later, 58,968 miles and no warranty i have engine light on and told," torque converter faulty requires transmission removal after running system scan". *jb

While idling in my mother-in-law's garage my jeep jumped into drive and slammed into the garage wall. i was told by chrysler that it was not a mechanical error.

The automatic transmission shifts into 1-2 very roughly. took to the dealer and was told that the transmition needed to be replaced. brake rotors are worn very severly and car shakes when brakes are applied.*ak

Transfer case bad on delivery. snap ring not installed unit replaced. brake rotors warp every 20k miles. replaced with aftermarket at 40k.. steering column clunk and feels loose. dealer replaced with new, same problem exists. excessive clunking and looseness in driveline. loud clunk park to reverse dealer says normal but lots of complaints. mr

After turning into driveway, stopped about 3 feet from street, placed the gear shift in park with the engine running, opened the driver side door, leaving it open as i went to the mail box to retreive the day's mail. (this has been done routinely since purchase of the vehicle) i retreived the mail, looking at several pieces as usual and even dropped a few pieces due to the cold weather, then walked around the rear of the vehicle; all of this consumed 2 to 3 minutes and while walking past the rear of the vehicle i heard a sound typically heard in shifting gears. when i reached a position at the rear left side door, the vehicle started moving backwards; i tried to get into the car but immediately saw the daanger and backed away. the vehicle rolled out into the street, crosssing the street, and stopped upon hitting a mailbox positioned directly across the street. this is a slight downward slope to our driveway close to the street while the mailbox is on an upward slope, about two or three feet above street level. the entire left side of the vehicle was damaged severely due to its collision with mail box. when i got back into the vehicle after the collision, i saw that the gear shift was in the reverse postion. two weeks earlier the same unepected gear shift movement from park to reverse occurred in my garage and the car began to move backward. being in the vehicle i was able to apply the brakes and reposition the gear shift in the park. i was alarmed by the incident but dismissed it as an exception.*ak

I pulled my jeep cherokee into the mail center in my homeowners complex; i put the jeep in park; opened my drivers side door; got out of the car; retreived my mailbox key from the drivers side door(where i store it); turned around and put the key into the mailbox; opened my mailbox and as i was about to take the mail out of the box i hear d a noise; i turn around and my jeep is moving backwards; i instinctively lunge at the car; hit my head on the outer edge of the open door causing a major cut requiring sutures; then the open door and moving car pin me against a post; i manage to push my way free causing more injuries to myself; spin around the outside of the pole; manage to get into thejeep;---- it jumped out of park into reverse; the open door was crushed backwards by the pole causing the property damage and i was injured in the incident as well. now i find out that grand cherokees and laredos have these reported incidents of jumping into reverse and i think these problem autos should be taken off the road; this could have been a tragic scene because this mail center is usually busy and if there was a child or someone behind my car or another auto behind me when this happened it could have been fatal; for me as well--i'm lucky i wasn;t knocked out.*ak

While parked vehicle jumped into reverse and rolled backwards, hitting mailboxes. this was second time this had happened. have yet to contact dealer. please add vin. *ak

The car was idling in park and it suddenly slipped into reverse. the driver had been out of the car for about 15 seconds when the vehicle apparently slid into either reverse or neutral. fortunately, the driver chased the car down, jumped into the car and was able to maneuver the car away from students who were walking nearby. otherwise there could have been a catastrohpe.*ak

Consumer was in front of vehicle with engine running and emergency brake not applied, vehicle suddenly went forward. consumer ended up underneath vehicle, but was not injured.*ak *slc

Vehicle was in park/ engine running/ emergency brake not applied. and vehicle suddenly went in reverse, consumer and passenger ran after vehicle trying to stop it. after about 80 feet consumer was able to jump into vehicle and applied brake. driver and passenger suffered neck and facial injuries. *ak

When engine was idling and gear shift indicator was in park, vehicle jumped out of park and started rolling backwards in reverse. consumer was able to stop vehicle before any injury or crash could occur. dealership has examined vehicle, but could not determine a cause for this problem. please provide any additional information / attachments. *note: gear shift indicator did not show correct gear that vehicle was in.*ak

My jgc has had off and on problems since i bought it virtually. not being a particularly complaint oriented person, i at first attributed the transmission problem on this truck to the fact that i had never owned a 4wd vehicle before. from the outset this truck shuddered when in a tight turn, either direction. during the first winter ii owned it, i left it in my driveway in park only to come out later to find it at the end of my drive. this happened a number of times, once stopping only because it stopped up against my wife's car. i thought i was crazy at first--now i won't leave this vehicle on a flat surface without the emergency brake on. recently, the truck developed a huge, and frightening "clunk" between 2nd and 3rd gear i believe. again, i did not make much of this until the "check engine" light came on more or less permanently. the truck will no longer shift into appropriate gear, has poor acceleration and worsening gas milage, and runs at erratic at best rpms. i have taken it too the dealer who on the first visit told me they couldn't reproduce the problem and told me to bring it back when it happened again. it happened again on the way out the lot. i took the truck back about a week later and was told it would cost about $250 to diagnose the problem. a week later, i took it back to the dealer, angry that i had found my exact problem on a technical service bulliten from chrysler itself. the dealer althogh very nice basically told me i would have to pay to have the transmission replaced at a cost of some (at least) $3,000.00. i am taking the car back next week to have the dealer tear down the transmission, after having attempted to speak to the district manager, who mysteriously disappearred upon my arrival. having read now virtually identical complaints to mine on this internet sight, i am now torn between letting them repair it to what seems like no avail , filing a lawsuit, or trading the vehicle in and losing a ton of money. thank you for your time.*ak

Vehicle was parked with engine running, emergency brake not applied. vehicle suddenly took off in reverse, hitting a person and then a building. person was seriously injured, damage to vehicle was $1700.00. *ak consumer states that his foot was on the brakes while vehicle was in motion. *jb

Put car in park. with engine running stepped out of car. transmission shifted into reverse and car started rolling backward. driver was knocked down and injured while trying to reach in car to apply brake by hand.*ak

While leaving vehicle idling and in park, vehicle jumped into reverse and started to move, but consumer jumped in and stepped on brakes, preventing vehicle from moving. *ak consumer was injured in accident. *yh

I put the vehicle in reverse in a parking lot, went backwards then put it in drive to go forward and it still went backward and i hit a telephone pole. when i looked down the gear shift was in reverse and not in drive.*ak

Transmission has a constant problem w/reverse, loud noise and rough engagement jeep stated it's normal to factory/specs. steering column has knocking noise and is loose/play. has been replaced once. same problem exists with steering column & jeep refuses to fix. jeep says it's normal to factory/specs this time. fuel pump has been replaced due to vehicle not starting due to pressure problem in fuel pump. vehicle sometimes does not start after fuel pump replaced. jeep states it's normal to factory/specs and refuses to fix.*ak

Vehicle was in park when exiting and it suddenly jumped out of park gear into reverse, causing vehicle to crash into a tree before stopping. *ak

While parked consumer was able to shift through all gears without applying brakes. button on shifter was not functioning. also not able to get key out of ignition.*ak

Vehicle jumped out of gear from park to reverse, accelerating almost 30 mph. dealer previously replaced transmission for "it was not grounded properly". please add additional information. *ak

Transmission will not shift into park. when you shift into park, then release the shifter, the shifter moves backward into park. very dangerous. thank you.*ak

Consumer had put vehicle in park while it was idling, consumer saw that vehicle was going in reverse and tried to jump in to stop it, however it ran into another vehicles door and stopped. rotors have been turned before warranty ended due to vehicle was jerking while braking, consumer also states that the hotline is worthless, she stated she could not get through and then when she did, she was on hold for 15-20 minutes. *slc

Ingage in park, got out of the vehicle left driver side door open, engine on wasked back around to get in the vehicle. suddenly shifted int reverse and took off down driveway and crashed backend first into large oak tree. vehicle tottaled

Had vehicle parked in driveway with both left side doors open. was taking child out of vehicle when shift lever popped out of park into reverse and started to roll backwards down the driveway. vehicle hit a neighbor's vehicle. no injuries.*ak

Consumer's wife was driving a leased grand, cherokee, at approximately 5 miles. brought it back, and parked it in driveway, took foot off brake, and automobile immediately took off . it went straight through consumer's garage, hitting other car that was parked in garage, causing damage to it before coming to a holt. *ak

While on side of the road consumer left vehicle running in park. about 2 minutes later, vehicle had jumped in reverse and started to roll down the hill. consumer has contacted dealer. please provide any further information.*ak while driving the vehicle jumped from drive to neutral, the dealer has been unable to find the problem. nlm

Steering wheel vibrates during highway speed braking, all rotors and pads replaced @ 9180 mi. 3 rotors resurfaced and one replaced again @16356 mi. - vehicle whistles at speed greater than 15 mph. dealer replaced 'pitted bearings' in front differential @ 18235 mi..*ak

Vehicle was left running and in park on a very steep driveway. after getting completely out of car consumer reached in to grab something when vehicle started to roll backwards. while trying to get into vehicle, it was moving so fast consumer suffered to nose, bruises on shoulders and right leg, injuries. until it hit a large tree and an officer arrived shut the vehicle off. *ak *et

When shifting gears the transmission makes a lot of noise. have had the vehicle in twice, was told that they had another jeep on the rack with the same problem was waiting for the manufacture rto tell them what to do next. after repeated calls to find out the status of the other jeep, was told that they had replace the whole transmission on that jeep and did not fix the problem. so after many calls am told that chrysler is working on the problem. also, the jeep backs off a lot when at 70 miles per hour. wrote the manufacture, but have not heard from them. *ak

The shifter button will not release, which indicates the vehcile is in park. the automobile was never left running, but the operator could not remove the key as the mechanisms indicated that the car was not in park. *ak

On two occasions the vehicle had placed itself in neutral while driving and experienced sudden acceleration. also the service dealer added a co-pilot to the vehicle. immediately after the co-pilot was installed, the consumer parked the vehicle on a flat surface with the emergency brake up, while still running, and the vehicle started to roll backwards. scc 8jb

While stopping at light vehicle jumped from drive to reverse and brakes locked. contaced dealer, and dealer stated nothing to be done. *ak

6 months ago, noticed transmission leak. took it twice for repair. after 2 repairs the transmission is still leaking which 2 weeks ago led me to call both the dealer & manufacturer. on 09/13, the dealer took the car back for repair but informed me that he will not replace the transmission because he sees no leak. on 09/16, i notice again that the transmission is leaking and therefore i am filling a complaint.*ak

This jeep has numerous problems and has been to the dealership for service 4 time and they have failed to repair even 1 of our complaints. all complaints other than the pull to the right have been dismissed with the explanation of can not duplicate. they have tried to repair the pull to the right but it only got worse. we were told by a repair tech. that it needed a new part to correct the pulling to the right but chrysler has failed to install this needed part. we have requested a repurchase of the jeep under the lemon law but chrysler denied our request stating that the pull to the right is due to "road crown" and if you hold the steering wheel with a strong to medium grip you don't notice the pull to the right! we have this in writing from the arbitrator that chrysler hired. the dealership and chrysler attempted to conceal some service repair forms that had the loose rear hatch problem and the pull to the right. chrysler stated in letters to the attorney general that we had never brought the rear hatch alarm to the attention of the dealership which was disproved at arbitration but we still never received a copy of the repair sheet even though the dealership has it and provided a copy to the arbitrator. we have parked this jeep due to the increasing severity of problems. we think this jeep is dangerous due to it's numerous defects. we refuse to let anyone ride in the back for months due to the rear hatch (which the district manager for chrysler found was loose at the arbitration hearing by pushing on the bumper and hatch. *ak
