Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. when driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. *ak recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. the consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. the consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. when sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. the left outer cv boot was leaking. the engine light came on. the consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear. *tc
Transmission went out on 1999 jeep grand cherokee at 30,000 miles. jeep will do nothing since we did not take the expensive extended warranty. noticed on your site multiple problems with transmission, any possibilities of a recall? *jb
1999 jeep transmission failure, had to be replaced at a cost of $3300.00. never has been off road, city driving under 64,000 miles. *jb
I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee, i replaced the the rear pinion bearing in april of 2001 and it needs to be replaced again. daimler/chrystler is unwilling to work with me on the repair of this item. have been driving for 30 years and have never repaired this on any other vehicle once, much less twice!
Check engine light came on. took it to my mechanic to trouble-shoot. he indicated it was a transmission problem and recommended a transmission specialist. the transmission specialist had the car for 2 days and finally refused to work on it saying that he had seen numerous 1999 models with this problem and referred me to the dealer. car was out of warranty; dealer service dept indicated the problem wasn't wide-spread. 1,1000 to fix. *jb
Car was making a low pitched grunting noise, and slow on acceleration, took it to the dealership and found that the transfer case had a hole in it. caused by the chain in the transfer case becoming loose and rubbing against the case.
Vehicle shift gears by itself. vehicle was in the park gear and shifted into reverse, almost causing an accident. please provide more details. ts
Exhaust manifold gasket over heated and burned up in turn had caused over heating in the torque converter. this led to transmission failure. keyless entry lock had malfunction also.*jb
Having problems with the rear end and transfer case problems. also stated that the vehicle has been taken to a specialist for the transfer case and rear end and they have stated that they will quit working on that type of vehicle because they are coming with to many defective problems. dealer was contacted and stated that the vehicle is out warranty. manufacture was also contacted and stated that they don't have any type of problems with the vehicles. ts
The consumer placed the shifter in park and exited the vehicle with it still running. once the consumer stepped away from the vehicle she heard a pop then the vehicle began to roll backwards and hit a dumpster. the drivers side door was damaged and the rear hatch window shattered. *ts *nlm

The vehicle suddenly rolled backwards and hit a parked vehicle, consumer stated there was a recall regarding the issue, however it only included 1993-1998 models. mr *jb
Consumer states that a noise would come from the rear end while driving at multiple speed. vehicle taken to dealer and informed that the rear end of the vehicle needed to be replace. feel free to provide any further information. mr
4 wheel drive failure on snowy incline vehicle came out of 4 wheel low , lost control of vehicle and vehicle slid backwards at least 75 to 100 ft. into an embankment. prior to this failure, i was coming up snowy driveway the night before and had vehicle in 4 wheel low and vehicle would not make it up hill and slid backwards on me, at that time i thought it was due to my driving however the next day it occurred again and realized that vehicle had kicked out of 4 wheel drive and only rear wheels working. premature wearing of front brake pads and rotors causing vehicle to vibrate, shimmy and squeal when appling brakes. dt
Consumer states while putting the vehicle into park the vehicle went into reverse and started to move in reverse. this has happened twice and the second time the consumer had the key out of the ignition. please provide further information.*jb
Between years 3 and 5 replaced both tail light assembly units. not covered under extended warranty. problem starting vehicle. took to dealer at least 5 times. dealer kept replacing fuel pump and saying it was bad. problem still occurs. replaced transmission sensor. replaced hood hydraulics. now hearing noise from rear end at any speed. being told by my mechanical that rear end needs to be replaced. *jb
While traveling down a mountain road, gaining speed, put car into 2nd gear in order to slow down and not over-use the brakes...car suddenly bolted back and brakes locked up and became unresponsive. i steered out of hitting the median , (it was a windy mountain road), but hit the back of a tractor trailor.. i was then hit from behind by another tractor-trailor and projected fowared. i was able to manuever over to shoulder of road. placed car's transmission in park..but it continued to move foward !!! i had minor aches and pains, car sustained at least $9500 worth of collission damage. told repair to check brakes and transmission...they said everything ok.. i did not do anything unusual in this driving experience. i am extremely fearful of the vehicle. it is still in shop waiting for final estimate. i want to make sure the frame and brakes and transmission are ok before i consider using vehicle again. my confidence is lost. can jeep respond and let me know why this happened...will they buy-back ? it is on extended warranty til january 2003 or 43,000 miles. i just purchased in january of 2002. i now realize many jeeps have many problems.*ak
Clunking and groaning when shifting; drivetrain whins at deceleration; originally, continuous drivetrain whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds over 75 miles per hour - after _x0013_repairs_x0014_ faint/ continuous clicking noise at approximately 75-83 mph with continuous drive train whine and loud harmonic drone at speeds of 83 mph and above. three trips to dealer for repairs to date (between july 2 and july 26) with each trip lasting approximately one week. owner has driven vehicle for no more than 7 contiguous days without having to leave with dealership for repairs and during this "drive time" has had to make numerous trips back to the dealer in order for notification/ negotiation on repairs, diagnosis, actual repairs, etc. purchase was made contingent upon dealership making full and complete diagnosis and repairs to drivetrain with warranty of all for a one year period; with all costs to dealer. dealer now is attempting to back out of written agreement - however, negotiations are still being held towards repairs. *ak
While driving there's a rattling noise. took vehicle to dealer, and they stated it was the differential. please provide any further information.*ak
The vehicle exhibits a sag/hesitation following a partial cool down restart, possibly an oxygen sensor problem. while making hard left turns at slow speeds (such as a u-turn), the airbag warning light illuminates and a audible chime is activated. the right side brake light assembly is burnt (internally) due to some kind of electrical overheating. the vehicle shifts hard, misses shifts, shifts repeatedly at constant speed and on a level grade. the rear differantial "bumps" very hard within 3-20 seconds of coming to a complete stop. an immovable "fog" has developed on the lenses of the composite headlight assemblies.*ak

Vehicle was parked with engine running, and emergency brake not applied. consumer got out of vehicle, and at that moment, vehicle shifted to reverse and hit a mailbox. consumer was able to stop vehicle. no injuries, damage to vehicle was $ 3100.00.*ak
Driveshaft is binding. this is the second shaft to need replacing. the 1st occurred at 27000 miles, and was replaced under warranty.*ak
Bearings where bad in the differential, mechanic said too much tension on the spring wearing bearings out. dealer commented on having many occurrences of this same problem.*ak
Placed in park/exited car/car rolled and did not stop/rechecked park position & confirmed that car was in park, however car still rolled & did not stop until brakes applied. called dealer and was told to use parking brake. dealer did not have any other information on problem. car to go to transmission shop to determine defect. plan to save all repaired parts. *ak
I parked car in a parking space; put car in park; as i was looking in my handbag i heard a crash.my car had backed up and hit a car in the next aisle. i then could not get the car out of gear or shut the car off. the manager of the store also could not get the car out of park of remove the key. the police officer was able to do this and said that my cell phone charger cord stopped the car from engaging totally in park. i plan to dispute this because i cannot recreate this.*ak
While the vehicle was idling it jumped out of the park gear and started rolling backwards in reverse approximately 100 to 200 yards. vehicle was stopped when it hit an embankment. no damage to vehicle or injury reported. dealership is examing vehicle to determine a cause for this problem. note: consumer reported previous incident over nhtsa webpage (odi reference number 750164).*ak the dealership was unable to duplicate the problem. *nlm
I started my 1999 jeep grand cherokee in the morning to warm up. the vehicle was in park, but the emergency brake was not on. i went back inside my house while my vehicle was warming. when i went back out to my vehicle i noticed it was no longer in my driveway. the vehicle was in my neighbors yard! i couldn't believe what had happened. when i got in the vehicle to move it out of the yard, it was in reverse. luckily it did not have enough power to make it up the bank of the yard or it would have went through my neighbors house. no one was injured nor was there any damage to the jeep. it jumped out of park and slipped into reverse on its own. i am 100% sure of this!! i bought the car bc i wanted something safe to haul my family around in...we just had our first child. now, after this incident, i don't feel safe at all. my wife is extremely afraid of it now especially since we have a newborn...nothing like making a huge car payment for something that drives itself. i did some research on the net and it appears that i am not the only person who has experienced this problem. the figures are now approaching 1000 reports of this type of incident. i like the jeep, i wish something could be done about the problem. if nothing is done by chrysler in the next few months i am going to sell it bc my wife won't even ride in the car anymore..especially with the baby. if i do sell the vehicle, i hope it does not injure or kill of the new buyer!! chrysler has problem, they need to fix it before people start getting seriously hurt.*ak
While backing out of the drive way and then getting out of vehicle and leaving vehicle in idle, and without any notice went into reverse and ran into the neighbor's yard. then, finally stopped when running into a tree. when looking into vehicle it was still in park and trying to reverse. contacted dealer, and dealer claimed that they never heard of the problem.*ak
Vehicle was backed into a parkinspace next to a utility box protected by 4 cement pillars. the vehicle was in park, the drivers door was opened placing the door between 2 of the 4 pillars and the driver was standing outside of the open door. the vehicle lurched backwards forcing the door into one of the pillars and causing the driver to move out of the way. the driver jumped back into the vehicle and put the brakes on then returned the vehicle to park and applied the emergency brake. the driver exited the vehicle and made sure none of the passengers or bystanders were injured, surveyed the damage and calmed his nerves. no other incidents have happened since. *ak
Rotors are shot and it seems i'm not the only one, 4 wheel drive will not disengage even after i shift it out of 4 wheel drive (large popping noise when it does disengage). rear wiper works sometimes and othertimes it won't. now i'm being told the transfer case is leaking and needs to be replaced (seal and shaft). at 53,000 miles these items seem ridculous. i've checked around on the internet and it seems like others have the same problems.

Vehicle has several jerks when decelerating and accelerating. brake rotors(4) had to be replaced. brake pads also had to be replaced. u-joint replaced. ring gear and pinion problems. transmission jerking. sunroof vibrations when sunroof is open. overall a nightmare of a vehicle purchase. *ak

Vehicle was parked inside of parking lot at work, it was running and in park,and driver walked away a few feet. there was a 18 wheeler parked besides grand cherokee. truck driver was blowing horn because vehicle's gear jumped in reverse and started towards truck, and then smashed into tryck. dealership was aware of problem. *ak
I stopped the car near a dumpster and put the shift lever in park. i opened the driver door and exited the vehicle. the engine was running and the parking brake was not engaged. i began to walk toward the rear of the vehicle and it began to back up. i attempted to jump back in through the open door but the door jamb caught me and threw me to the ground partially under the car. the door caught the dumpster and was bent back to the front fender and the left front tire rolled over my left foot and right lower leg. a person nearby jumped in the car and stopped it a few feet from a brick wall. i was taken to an emergency room for x-rays and there were no broken bones. i had deep bruises on my left foot, both arms, my right shin and on the back of my right upper thigh. my left knee and my left hamstring were both strained. i am still having difficulty walking without pain in my left leg. *ak

My 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo had a new differential install edat 15,000 miles; two new front rotors at 36,000 and should have been done way before this; back brake drum cracked at 36,000 miles; front rotors redone again at 42000 miles; and now the motor at 52,000 miles. we had not indication (noise, etc) of the motor going, i was traveling aroung 5-10 miles per hour turning into our road and it felt like something heavy dropped out of the vehicle, it sounded like metal going through a fan. a piece of the block fell out onto the road and the people at the local dealer said they had never seen any thing like it before. it was like a bomb went off inside the motor. my question -- should chyrsler be responsible for this motor, it will be in the range of $6,000. thank you.*ak
