Recently reported FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE problems on 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Fuel tank is held in place by a skid plate (a.k.a. brush plate). the skid plate has completely rusted out and the fuel tank is in danger of falling off the vehicle. *tr

Was removing rear hitch so i could repaint it and noticed that my gas tank shield was rotted and gas was leaking above shield so i removed the rotted shield and found leak.it was caused by dirt and road grime getting in above where shield was rotted.thank god i caught it before shield started to fall and spark against road.come to find out that shield is the only thing holding gas tank in vehicle which i believe is totally a hazard for all grand cherokee owners from 1999-2004 at least.i went online and found out this was a major defect in all from 1993-2004 and yet no recalls.there have been many fires from this and i believe it should be looked at.mine at present just sits in yard as they want 400 hundred for shield and 400 hundred or more for tank.all junkyards tell me that they are all rotted and so they have none to sell.all junkyards tell me the same so i have no idea what to do yet.i could see this if my jeep was not road worthy but there is no rust on it and it runs great. *js

Within the last 6 months my jeep's engine has shut off" while driving" at various speeds 5 different times but not exceeding 60mph. four of the six times i was able to shift into neutral and restart the engine, two times i had to wait approximately 5 minutes before it would restart. the incident at 60mph happened on a 4 lane highway and luckily i was close to the shoulder when it shut off and i was able to get it off the road before the steering locked up and no one was hurt. the computer never registers any problem and my mechanic has stated that it could be numerous issues but nothing for sure. to the best of my knowledge jeep has never issued a warning or recall for this issue. this is extremely dangerous and an accident just waiting to happen. *tr

The fuel tank skid frame supporting the fuel tank has rusted through. this part is designed to hold the fuel tank with no other means of support. once this fails the fuel tank dislodges and has the potential to separate from the vehicle. this vehicle is being investigated by nhtsa and chrysler has recently stated that the skid frame provides protection for the plastic fuel tank mounted behind the rear axle. it fails prematurely due to its inadequate thickness and water/salt catching design. there is no way to prevent the corrosion and perform maintenance without removing the skid frame/fuel tank . a recall to install a thicker gage metal corrosion resistant skid frames is needed. many 1999-2004 grand cherokee jeeps are vulnerable as their skid frame supporting fuel tank decay. many reports of people who have the wj jeeps are having this problem per the internet/jeep forums.*tr ..updated 02/14/17 *bf

I had a minor hit in rear ..and fuel skid plate got pushed in and almost ruptured gas tank..this happened over a year ago ..now the skid plate is starting to rot/rust out and it would cost over $600.00 to repair ..due to the june 2013 recall of this item i think chrysler should be responsible for this repair ..i contacted them and they said i would not be covered because i did not have a hitch attached to my car ..this is wrong ...what goes here ..can anything be done about this ..i fear now driving my jeep because i have no gas tank skid plate left .. *tr

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo and in the past i guess around 6 months it has been parked because noone can figure out what the problem is.the vehicle used to be so dependable and then one day it wouldn't start after i drove it about 15 minutes and shut it off,but i could let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes and it would start right up.after a few weeks i couldn't drive it anymore because it was stalling more often and i never knew when it was gonna start or not.i had it put on the computer at advance and they mention the number 3 not firing but noone can figure out why my very dependable vehicle all of a sudden was very dangerous.please help me if u can,i am a single mother with no transportation.i have been reading entries by other jeep owners and i have a little hope since alot of them are having the same problem. *tr

Rear axle gas tank

I own a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo and the fuel pump went bad and i could smell smoke, like and electrical problem. the mechanic said it was the fuel pump and i authorized him to repair. i then looked online to find that the fuel pump which my jeep had was a recalled aftermarket fuel pump from airtex. i called airtex and they gave me the run around asked me all sorts of questions , are you sure this is the right one and did i have the part to ship back to them. i called the mechanic and he already replaced it with a new airtex fuel pump and threw the other away. i have the receipt but cannot send the old fuel pump back. they refuse to reimburse me for this recalled product even when my mechanic wrote down the old make and model number of the old recalled fuel pump. this is wrong and unfair. $500 i am out . *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1999 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that after refueling, a strong odor of fuel was present on the interior and around the exterior of the vehicle. the failure was constant. the same failure occurred on a separate occasion in which the vehicle would not start. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 97,800.

Just finished repairing daughter in laws vehicle. a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. she complained of extreme gas fumes inside her vehicle. with a 1 year old and a 3 year old being transported in vehicle immediate attention was required. this is what i found. the ordinary steel fuel pressure connecter (disconnect) at top of fuel pump was completely rusted through and squirting a stream of gas, via rusted out pinhole, under pressure, all over top of fuel tank and surrounding area. thank god no ignition resulted, would have been catastrophic. connecter should have been either stainless steel or at least plastic at such an important location. plain steel should never be used at such an important location. as there are many many thousands of this year vehicles out there this is a ticking time bomb. even my vintage 1991 ford pickup used stainless steel at gas tank fittings. vehicle is second car and was purchased a few years ago. body is remarkable rust free for a salty n.y. s, vehicle. and is in good condition other than dangerous gas tank issue. it is only a question of time before a dangerous fire will occur in someone's vehicle and hopefully no one will die.this issue needs ,and must,be addressed . have attached photo of rusted disconnect and have retained the rusted connector. hope i did not waste my time with this important information and will expect a timely reply[xxx] p.s. connecter was so severely rusted and frozen to fuel pump outlet it had to slotted with a cutoff wheel to remove- a very hazardous procedure.(can not attach photo on this site) information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Auto had 40000+ miles when i bought it from my brother. i had it only a few months when it stalled on the interstate. it would not start until i sat for a little while. i am capable of overcoming auto trouble so i didn't think much about this incident due to the fact that i have been a mechanic for many years now. then it began to stall in heavy traffic and sometimes would start again and other times after waiting several minutes. i replaced the crank sensor, in-tank fuel pump and filter. it ran okay for a while but began to hard start and stall again about 2 mos. ago. then 2 days ago it stalled something like 25 times coming home from the hospital. since then i have been on the internet reading the blogs about this problem and if everyone that has this issue would email you, your computers would shut down. it is unbelievable that the manufacturer is just replacing the expensive parts at random, taking the money and not fixing the problem. these people, myself included, are begging for a solution to a problem with a very nice automobile made in america by skilled top dollar union labor. it is getting close to scam epidemic. my car is sitting in my garage not fixed because there are about ten different things in the electrical and fuel system that can cause these symptoms. i am a disabled veteran and cannot afford to go down that eliminating process. my doctor doesn't do me that way and i won't allow the manufacturer to do it either. *tr

Fuel sending unit was giving false readings and would vary at any given time. condition lasted for several thousand miles before complete failure of sending unit. there are no recalls available for the 1999 model, only the 1998. *jb

99 jeep grand cherokee with engine problems customer states that the rpm's would immediately go up to the 200 or sometimes higher as soon as he starts up the car and also accelerate when the brakes are applied**cc the consumer stated various parts were replaced, however the problem returned. the consumers wife was driving, when all of a sudden the vehicle started to accelerate on its own, she applied the brakes as hard as she could, however the vehicle continued to proceed in a forward motion. the only solution was to place the vehicle into park. after placing the vehicle in park, the consumers wife placed it in drive again and immediately it started to accelerate uncontrollably. applying the brakes with full force did not solve the problem. when aaa arrived and started the vehicle, nothing happened. the sudden acceleration happened again while the consumers daughter was driving. during one of the sudden acceleration incidents, the consumers wife was injured. the right front wheel speed sensor was replaced. the coolant radiator fan relay and water pump were replaced. the air bag light was on, the transmission seal was leaking. the fuel pump was replaced. the right and left hub bearing were replaced. *jb

Leaking fuel tank. gas is leaking from the the vent seal ( weld ) at the top of the tank.this part cannot be replaced.the tank must be replaced. the jeep dealer said there are 700 tanks back ordered ! so there is a problem though jeep denies it. also the year 2000 grand cherokee has been recalled for the same problem with the same fuel tank. thank you. *ak

The consumer the check engine light continued to illuminate, upon inspection it was discovered there was an evaporation leak, the leak was in a roll over valve which was apart of the gas tank. *ak the consumer was told by the dealer, that over 500 gas tanks were on back order. *jb

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited 4.7 litre. whenever the fuel is less than half a tank the engine stalls when taking a curve or making a turn.*ak i had to take to a ditch last week to avoid being run over by a semi when the engine cutout eliminating the chance for me to accelerate out of harms way. one local dealer acknowledges the existence of the problem - one denies they ever heard of it. a local mechanic talk show had someone with the same vehicle call in a coupld of weeks ago and they acknowledged their awareness of the problem when i called in today. a woman at chrysler headquarters last week put me on hold when i called in and when she came back she said she was reading a similar complaint. she then denied that there is any problem (because my vehicle is out of waranty). if someone has not already died as a result of this problem someone surely will. i would appreciate assistance on this matter. thank you! jeffrey c asplund 952-890-1969

**safety issue ** after filling the gas tank, fuel spewed out of the bottom of the vehicle, forming a puddle approximately 2 ft in diameter. eventually it slowed to a drip. i took it to shakopee dodge to fix the leak. $374.19 later, it's fixed. i called chrysler to argue that i shouldn't have to pay for this, as it's a safety concern. they chose not to support me, and said they could do nothing.

Bad rotors and bad fuel pump. *nlm

Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. when driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. *ak recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. the consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. the consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. when sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. the left outer cv boot was leaking. the engine light came on. the consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear. *tc

After the vehicle was refueled, gas started to spill out of the tank.*jb

1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 6cyl. mileage 78000. during refueling, fuel would not enter gas tank. after having one dealer look and state it needed gas filler tube which would have to be ordered. i manage to get gas in car and get home from 200 miles away. the next time i drove vehicle i notice gas leaking under the vehicle. took to local dlr, they had to replace fuel line to gas tank and filler tube. this was a $470.00 repair. this is the 2nd time i have had a problem with the fuel tank system on this jeep. this is a vary serious situation due to fumes getting into the passenger area and the possibility of a fire from leaking fuel running underneath the car. two other problems with this car is the transfer case leaks due to a bad o-ring(this is a 10 cent part that cost $500.00 to replace because the transfer case has to be taken apart), front wheel bearing going bad @ 78000 miles, replacement cost $400.00. ts

The vehicle would not start; engine cranks w/o starting. initially it would crank for long periods, ie. 20 seconds, and start. then not at all. took it to dealer, who was aware of service bulletin issued re: fuel delivery system, at tank fuel pump problem. repair was made at cost of appr. $400.00. i feel this should be a recall and repair should have been made free of charge.

Intermittent hard starting or extended cranking. diagonois-fuel pump losing pressure due to fuel pump o-ring(fuel seal). dt

Our jeep 1999 was hit in rear end and burn , hurting the driver badly. the gas tank exploded on impact. this is very unsafe. *tr

Since puchase of vehicle there has been a vibration when applying brakes. took vehicle to dealer, and they replaced rotors. *ak consumer states that recall 00v136/man recall 879 explains the problems vehicle is experiencing, however consumer has been charged for all repairs. after running vehicle with a/c on for longer than an hour, the a/c stops cooling, a/c was blowing through defroster vents, found miscalibrated atc head. vehicle would cut off at idle. right rear window inoperable. crank sensor was replaced. *slc

The car was hard to start and sometimes sluggish and occasionally surged suddenly on accelaration. the car was kept five days , a new fuel pump installed that failed completely on installation.with the number of tbs related to engine performance , starting etc. i would not think it totally unlikely the integrity of the fuel pump might be related to some of those. the engine accelrations were extreme and dangerous

Vehicle has had continuous problem with the transmission slipping and lurching forward at stops. the transmission also intermittently slips and makes loud clunking noises while driving. dealer says that they do not find a problem. despite over 45 days at

Gas tank was replaced mid july of 1999. after that date, the "check engine" light appeared. service department claimed that the oxygen sensor was bad and replacing the part would fix the problem. the following day, the "check engine" light appeared again. dealership was notified, but the service department was too busy to service us in the next few days. we went down to orlando fl, where we purchased the vehicle, and they saw the car immediately. the service department's diagnosis was the same as the dealership in jacksonville, fl. oxygen sensor was reported as bad and replaced a second time in less than a week's period. the following day, on the way back to jacksonville from orlando, the "check engine" light appeared again and the dealership was notified in jacksonville. we are scheduled to have the car service again to correct the problem. furthermore, the car is now running rough; indicating that the light is not just a malfunction, put a potentionally serious problem.

Won't start. bad fuel pump, national back order. still hard starting after replaced.

Rear pinion seal leaking at first oil change -took to dealer - they changed out the whole rear end -noise again in rear -took to dealer they said now it was in the front - took to different dealer - tried to fix - took back vehicle till they could get whole new front and `rear end parts in - this has been over a month ago- while waiting in line vehicle died and restarted - few days later vehicle died three times at high speed restarted but ck engine light stayed on -towed to dealer- they said they replaced crank sensor - noticed new o2 sensor as well - still waiting on other parts - passenger side window does not work - vehicle surges at constant speeds -stick shift hard to shift from park to reverse and drive and visa versa - interior lights dont come on when remote turned on to open vehicle- engine feels and sounds rough- alarm system lights go on and off by themselves- once the dealer gets the parts in i will be taking it back for the 6th time with our new complaints. *ak

Vehicle has suffered from warped rotors which were replaced twice on the front and once on the rear. no problems since 12998 miles. but i consider this to be due to poor quality. main issue reoccurring ,stalling problems while stopped in drive. vehicle has been in three times for checks to throttle body (cleaned and once replaced), software revisions and other settings, but stalling continued to manifest itself. has stalled 3 times in the last 3 weeks. contacted daimler chrysler who kept referring me to the dealer. but after multiple visits i have no confidence in their ability to address this problem. *ak

Gas spills / overflows on person at fueling, pump shuts off, with tank near empty.

Rear-back window leaked, reseal failed, had to remove window and reseal, took 4 days. front differential failed causing front tires to hop during tight turns, diff replaced took 3 days. when stopped at a stop light truck lurches forward almost as if hit from behind, this happens 1 sometimes 2 times at one stoplight, engine revs also increase when this happens, dealer cannot fix. gas tank is very hard to fill the pump stops before it is full and many times gas spills all over truck and pavement causing a fire hazzard, also gas cap is very hard to remove.
