On average, the 2016 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 35 898 miles.

Recently reported ENGINE problems on 2016 Jeep Cherokee

While the car is in motion or just after braking, the engine will beep and then completely shut off. the screen says to put the vehicle in park in order to restart it. it takes several moments for the vehicle to restart. *dt*jb

Shortly after i get gas the vehicle will go from drive to idle and a warning message will pop up that says i need to shift to park. this has happened while waiting to take a left at lights and sometimes as soon as i go to pull out of the gas station.

While we were driving, a message came on the dashboard to service transmission, and then we were not able to accelerate. we pulled over and turned off the car, and then started it back up and we drove fine for about a minute before the same message came up on the dashboard. again we were not able to accelerate even though the gas pedal was pushed all the way. it wasn't making any noise. we called the dealership and all i was told was to turn it off for about 5 minutes and turn it back on to see if the service light would reset. if not to call a tow truck to take it to the nearest dealership, but since it was sunday they were all closed. all my family was with me in the car which was very frightening. i followed the dealerships instructions but it did not work. we stop at a stoplight and it didn't want to move forward once the light turned green. we turned off the car and turned it back on and it went again. we were about 45 minutes away from home so we just headed back. the service message never went away and were only able to travel at low speed. i have called fca in the past when a service transmission message popped up on the dashboard but it just flashed and didn't stay. this is a new car and i am very upset it has all these issues.

Takata recall after starting the car and staying stationary starts to shake. while driving shakes even more and has stalled on me while driving with my toddler in car seat in back. then it did it again 2 more times just glad my son wasn't in the car. now check engine light lit up today feb-6-2019. there have been plenty of complaints of these type of issues. my vehicle is under warranty still as it is a lease. i will not be leasing jeep anymore. *dt *dt*jb

Twice in the past week my jeep has just stalled while driving, both on 2/1/19 and 2/4/19 i was going around 35-40 mph. i am able to coast the jeep off the road and then i needed to wait a few minutes before it starts up again. the on board computer system display does not show any problems. upon research it seems several people have reported the same problem.*dt*jb

Car was in drive/run mode and car cut off. steering wheel locked up. car coasted to stop. unable to control. *dt*jb

While driving on a residential street, my 2016 jeep cherokee latitude with 45,196 miles displayed the "service shifter" message on the dashboard. the prnd shifter lights were all lit up red. pulled over, put the car in park, restarted the vehicle and the message did not appear. later in the day, the radio display stopped working. scheduled a service appointment with the dealership.

This is safety concern! 2016 jeep cherokee car would stop while you driving high speed without any warning sign and all the light will come on can not shifting or restart the car. it happened on me twice already. one time on highway i-95, one time on a busy local road at pa. jeep dealership said it was computer updating, i could not get it. after first time they repaired it, i did feel something wired with the car. so i brought it back to jeep dealership two more time for diagnose. they all said the car had no problem. not even a month, it happened again. suddenly stop! this time they still trying to fix it for me, but i could not trust jeep again. i mean if they can fix it, it would not happened again after three time what ever fix or diagnose.

Our 2016 jeep cherokee (latitude 4wd) has been stalling after a cold start. the battery indicator flashes and then registers a message to place the car in p to shift into gear. i have been able to restart the car after waiting 30-60 sec, sometimes while in traffic. the vehicle was at the dealership on 1/14/19 and i was told that there wasn't any oil on the dipstick. the engine is possibly burning oil but there are no indicators or status updates when the system is checked. i was told by the dealership that they are aware of an engine issue with the 2016 jeep cherokee. an oil consumption test is needed before the engine can be replaced (if needed). oil consumption test initiated 1/14/19. chrysler/jeep is aware of this issue and has not issued a safety recall. negligence by chrysler for not responding to this significant defect and safety issue.

My jeep keeps breaking down while the vehicle is in motion and i have almost been in several wrecks because of it. i have now done my own research on this issue going on with cars that have my same year make and model and have been experience the same exact issues as i am all over the us. i have been speaking with some of these people who were writing these comments on the jeep website and they have all said they are not dependable and highly unsafe as they have also almost got into wrecks because of it. at this point its only a matter of time before someone is gets hurt due to the vehicle shutting down while in motion or worse, death. something must be done to stop the sale of this unsafe vehicle. i am stunned nothing has yet to be done about this. my car has now been in the shop since i bought it and no one can figure out what is wrong with it. i have had to take it back 3 times and the issue is not getting fixed. now, i'm told that they are having to open some "star" thing - which has something to do with asking the manufacture if these issues are common and what to do to fix them. this is ridiculous that i have been put through hell and they don't even know if the car can be fixed. as of right now the car is completely broken down and no one knows how to fix it. all these other people are having the same issue with the dealerships not being able to figure out what is wrong so they just give the broken car back to the owner and it goes back on the road. i am telling yall this is very unsafe. *dt consumer stated car is fixed.*jb

I have a 2016 jeep cherokee sport. my check engine light came on. i was told there was a thermostat issue. my total repair cost for this one problem was $866.06 at the paramus nj dealer. i'm extremely disappointed that i had such an expensive repair when my car is 2016 and i have less than 50,000 miles. i'm also disappointed that i was told only dealers can update the computer on my vehicle. i have heard of several jeep owners complaining of sensor issues noting repair work wasn't necessary. also, with the check engine light on my auto start did not work.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 45 mph, the engine stalled and the steering wheel seized. the contact was unable to steer the vehicle. the vehicle was pulled over and towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. the failure mileage was 72,000. the vin was unknown.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled. the contact changed the battery and noticed that the oil was low. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the contact called vatland chrysler dodge jeep ram (855 south, us-1, vero beach, fl 32962, (772) 567-6633) and an oil consumption test was completed. the dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 36,000.

This is in regards to my 2016 jeep cherokee latitude. in the last 4 days my car how just completely shut off 3 times on 12/23/18, 12/26/18 and 12/27/18, while i was driving, probably would have been 4 times but i didn't drive on christmas day. the first 2 times it happened i was leaving my work parking lot driving no more than 10-15 mph. today 12/27 my car shut off while i was stopped at a stop light . this happens with no warning at all! luckily no one was behind me when i stalled. i have seen many people on social media with this same problem! the dealership says it could be an oil issue, so they are just doing an oil change and they said they recommend bring the car back every 1000 miles to check levels!! what kind of solution is that ? i have young children that i drive to school! i can't have this happen while driving them!

bought the car 10/3/2018 with a fresh oil change, 12/18/2018 car shut off on husband while driving with kids in the car (the engine died, steering locked up, the battery light flashed and an error popped up that said to put the transmission in park and select the desired gear) no oil light ever came on to warn low oil 12/20/2018 car shut off twice while driving, check engine light came on went to dealer and oil change was completed, less than 4k miles driven and there was only quart of oil left in engine (5 qt burned) 12/21/2018 called dealer because car skipped, was told normal due to air getting into engine causing a misfire should be fine now 1/7/2019 car sputtered twice while driving, felt like it shut off brought car to dealer and the car was low by 1 quarts of oil started oil consumption testing. when car stalls out it is while you are driving and happens without warning, i was in the middle of an intersection the first time it happened to me. i could have been killed to "save their engine"

When driving i notice when i stop on the brake and gas both would not work. the dashboard icon of the battery illuminated, the notification sound played, and the car slowed to a stop. also, the notification center displayed "shift to park". i shifted into park, placed my hazard lights on, and waved the cars that were behind me to drive around. made the attempt to restart twice with no such luck. the third attempt saw the car turn back on successfully. ..*bf.. *tr

I've had a service shifter message appear numerous times and then disappear. when i would take it in to get looked at i was told that there was no record of that code being displayed in the car log/memory and that the service department at the delearship couldn't find anything wrong with it. upon doing research on this message i found that many other people have had this same problem and if left unchecked can cause the vechicle to shift into park while in motion causing loss of control and accidents. i have received this message while both stationary just when i turned the car on, and also while in motion on a road.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 35 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed and the vehicle stalled without warning. several minutes later, the vehicle restarted. the vehicle was towed to gladstone dodge chrysler jeep & ram (5610 n oak trafficway, gladstone, mo 64118, (816) 455-350) where it was diagnosed that there was insufficient oil in the engine. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

About a month ago, my 2016 jeep started to stall as i was driving the vehicle. the steering wheel locks and the battery sign flashes, then the car tells me to place the car in park. i shut the car off, wait about two minutes then restart the car. sometimes i will make it to my destination, sometimes it stalls on me again. it's happened too many times, and i scared to drive the car anymore. it has been in a shop for three weeks now, and there is nothing that they can find wrong with the vehicle. they hook it up to a machine, but no error messages are reported to them. *dt*jb

This jeep stalls out at low speeds and once stalled out at 55 mph. dealer says this engine the 2.4l 4 cylinder has oil consumption issues and it is quite normal for the engine to use 1 qt of oil every 1,000 miles

Takata recall my 2016 jeep cherokee will shut off while in motion. the car died while going through an intersection. i was able to coast into a safe place, but car would not restart again after for a few hours. my husband was driving the car and came to a stop at an intersection when the car died again. the car started rolling backwards and he almost hit the car behind him. this is not safe. we have a one month old child, and i do not feel safe putting her in the car. *dt*jb

My vehicle stalls while driving; on the expressway, after a car wash, in the school parking lot. this is very dangerous!! it happened 3 times during rush hour traffic on a friday night. online complaints are plentiful...this needs to be addressed, someone is going to be seriously hurt!! currently at the shop, they cannot figure out what the issue is. this has happened on numerous occasions.

Vehicle shut off completely while driving on the interstate. no warning lights or any other indication of issues. was able to restart after several minutes and no indication lights on again but driving fine. checked oil level this morning and it is at 83% after only 1375 miles. extremely unsafe!!! conditions were dark/nighttime and all electrical shut off as well leaving us to be unseen and almost hit by 18 wheeler. this is the 3rd major issue with this vehicle in less than one year. it has needed new starter coil, new thermostat and now this.

At 61,000 miles my jeep started having a strong fuel smell in the cabin after coming to a stop with the auto-start dis-engaged. reading online, many people on the forums have similar issues with cherokees since the early 2000's with no known malfunction to fix. the exhaust smell has caused headaches in the last week.

While driving and vehicle in motion under normal driving conditions 2016 jeep cherokee vehicle will accelerate by itself without warning and cause hazardous driving conditions and safety concerns. vehicles engine light will remain on and jeep dealership can not diagnose and properly fix vehicle. vehicle experiences unintended acceleration while driving causing major safety concerns.

Jeep replaced the original engine under warranty due to excessive oil consumption that caused the engine to stall while driving. now the second engine, after only a few thousand miles of driving, is also consuming excess oil. per chrysler's service bulletin 09-007-15 published on 7/31/15, a 2016 model year vehicle is only allowed to consume up to one quart of oil per 2,000 miles during the first 50,000 miles. jeep should obviously be preparing for a massive recall issue here, as this is the most common issue here for all jeep cherokee's that have this model engine.

Engine stalls and dies without warning while driving. after shutdown a message on the dash tells you to put it into park to start the car again, engine will restart after 2 min but will fail to restart if you try sooner. very dangerous, this has happened 6 times now while driving. started at 33k miles and i am now at 42k, 1st time dealer said fill up oil, 2nd time service dept said nothing wrong but updated software, 3rd time service department has never heard of this before and no idea but told me to trade my car in for something else. very dangerous as has happened on a freeway while moving, each time is without warning and you lose all engine and power. *bf *dt*jb

Shortly after a right turn into a short steep uphill section of road, the car just died. there were no warning lights. the display message said to shift into p then select a gear. the car had no functionality, it was dead and started rolling backwards towards the intersection. put in park and tried to restart - check engine light came on, and was able to operate foot brake which was also unresponsive to that point - panicking that the car would roll across the intersection into the ditch. car would not however start. after a few minutes and tries, the car started and drove as though nothing had happened and no warning lights on the display. drove home from work and to the dealer, like nothing had happened. but scared that the problem might repeat and deliberately took backroads just in case. can't imagine what would happen if i'd taken the interstate and the problem repeated. after getting home, found they had called and left a message about there being no oil. called back - long conversation: - they said there was no oil on the dipstick (so why did the oil light not come on?) - they had changed the oil and filter and the car was good to go (really?) - they recommended bringing the car back after 1000 miles to check oil consumption (so if the car for whatever reason loses its oil will it really be safe to drive? could it not happen the next mile, the 100th mile?) - they said there was no evidence of oil leaks (yes, we would have noticed oil spots on the floor of our garage) - they said there must be "internal consumption" of the oil (so there should be smoke coming from the exhaust, right? there was not) ..going around in circles. why does the car stop dead when the problem occurs. the dealer said this is to protect the car. well, thank you chrysler for caring so little about your customers that you protect your car from damage at the expense of people.

The rpm's on this transmission in this vehicle go up very high but the transmission does not shift into gear. the vehicle sputters and slows on the open road. the engine does run on all cylinders. the engine has no power. this creates a safety risk on a highway. also the differential locks up when you have to hit the brakes and three rear of the car locks up and skids left of center. party's of the suspension have broken for no apparent reason. the left rear control arm broke for no apparent reason. i have been informed by a jeep dealership that this vehicle is unsafe to drive. i have filed complaints with chrysler on three occasions informing them of the numerous issues with this vehicle. i was advised to get a diagnostic test done and they would work with me to buy this car back. i did as requested and now being informed i will probably have to go to arbitration. three times now when i applied the brakes hard on a highway the east locked up and the left rear of my car skidded and i had no control. i nearly hit a retaining wall. i have a vehicle that the dealership has deemed unsafe to drive.

Vehicle shut off while my husband was driving.took vehicle to dealership. was 3 quarts low. we have been told by the dealership that their hands are tied, that this engine uses about a quart of oil every 1000 miles but the engine is designed to shut off before it would blow engine. my husband told the dealership that if they put an engine in a vehicle that uses oils this way they should let people know. we have talked to chrysler with nothing other than have an oil consumption test done which we did. we now keep oil and check on a regular basis

While driving on the freeway an engine warning light appeared on the dash with the message "service transmission" and my speed immediately dropped and i was unable to accelerate to move out of the way of oncoming vehicles. i was barely able to pull the car over. once stopped the message went away and acceleration was restored, but message occurred again and power was again lost.

Over the last 2 weeks, while driving my jeep has lost power. no warning light or anything, my jeep just dies. it will say "shift into p, then select gear" after i have lost power. my lights/radio/bluetooth all still work, but i can not break nor accelerate nor steer. i was nearly t-boned this am, and nearly rear ended last week.

Vehicle randomly gets hot as if the ac stopped blowing cool air but then works normally. does this frequently but randomly for only a couple of seconds at a time.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the warning indicators flashed and went blank on the instrument panel. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and waited approximately five minutes. once the vehicle was restarted, it operated normally. the contact also stated that the engine was replaced in may of 2017 by bettenhausen chrysler dodge jeep (8255 w 159th street, tinley park, il 60477). the vehicle was taken to the same dealer for the recent failure. the contact was advised to keep an eye on the oil consumption. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 31,551.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving 10 mph, the check engine and "put in park and place in desired gear" warning indicators appeared on the instrument panel. in addition, the brake pedal was difficult to depress. after several attempts, the contact was able to place the vehicle in park and shut off the vehicle. once restarted, the vehicle operated normally. the vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. winnie dodge chrysler jeep ram (located at 125 tx-124, winnie, tx 77665, (409) 296-3500) was contacted and an appointment was made to have the vehicle diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 32,696.

Vechile stalling while driving. the vechile will stall driving at low speed turns, up hills and coming to a stop. second time it has been to dealership for same problem. first time was june 30 2016. second is today.

The first day i had the car i took it back complaining of some kind of electrical problem. they said they found nothing wrong. in august of this year i took a road trip during the trip a smell the scent of raid over powered the car and is still present in the car today so bad am afraid to drive the car. i was on the highway eight hours.on that trip and i felt as if i was gonna pass out. didn't know what to do the smell is still in the car. i only drive to the store and back now.

2016 jeep cherokee latitude 4x4 (25k miles) will stall or lose power while driving. happened several times in past few months. noticed first when had trouble starting in the morning a few times (after a recent oil change). while driving, jeep latitude 4x4 will jump into gear while slowing jolting the car forward, temporarily lose power (rpm drop, and mph drop), or completely lose power while driving (happened on both city and highway). complete loss of power happened several times while turning, coming around turn, indicator will ding then suddenly steering stiffens, no power from gas pedal, and car slows to stop. once stopped, message screen displays 'shift car to p then to desired gear' i then have to shift car to park and restart (sometimes taking 3 or 4 attempts). this has also happened while attempting to merge onto highway (coming around bend of on ramp) luckily there was a large shoulder and little traffic to pull over safely. this poses an immediate risk of safety of not only myself, but passengers and other vehicles. if this were to happen at a busy intersection, highway, or dangerous road conditions (low visibility, slick surface, etc) and accident will occur. i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle.

Engine stalls while driving because of low oil. jeep is 2 1/2 yrs. old with 50,000 miles and should not be burning oil. many people complaining of the same thing.

My car will sputter and shut down while driving in my neighborhood. when i tried to start it the car would sputter as if it was stuck in the starter, then just shut down. i attempted again and still nothing. i've called the dealership and they blow me off. i don't know what to do and with an engine acting like this is going to cause an accident. something needs to be done please!!!

I bought new jeep cherokee 2016 3.2 l in sep. 2016. was very happy for first few months and then i noticed i got jerk while i was driving. i informed the dealership guy but, he said that's normal it happened because of automatic transmission. after couple a months i got service shifter light on. i went to the dealership and they updated software. it was back up again with in a week so i decided to change the dealership. i went another jeep dealership got error code and fix it. it was working fine for at least three months and i got back service shifter sign but, this time it was with service forward sign too. they fix it but because of that my break pads was worn down and it was not covered under warranty and i have to pay out of pocket.after a week i got service transmission light on. i have to tow my car and drop at the dealership. they fix the problem but the all problem back up again. i got the service shifter light on, my car is getting started jerking and create a sound when i was break hard. so guys i am very frustrated with my jeep cherokee.

Keep getting service shifter and need to stop vehicle and shut off and start up again. sometime vehicle will run good for a couple of days, other times get 5 minutes down the road and it returns. went on a long road trip and have to pull over a number of times on a very busy interstate. i brought it into the shop three (3) times with the same issue (late date 8/2/18), last time i was told it would be $380.00 to replace a harness for some kind of cable and they needed to order parts. still waiting for the call from the shop with a date to replace the harness.

Car shut off while driving.

I was driving down a hill at about 20 mph when my vehicle started stuttering and then shut off. the car pulled up a message on the dash that said, ' vehicle must be in park to start the vehicle'. this was absolutely terrifying. i placed the car in park and then restarted the vehicle. this has happened 2 more times since then. car is scheduled to be serviced.

Several times in the past 3 months (6-8 times), without warning, the car shuts off. the engine completely stops regardless of in motion or accelerating from a stop. it has happened each way. it shuts off, and the vehicle computer provides a message that you must be in park to start the vehicle. i shift to park and it starts up again. when it shuts off the power steering goes and you cannot control the direction of the vehicle. there are no symptoms and no warning but i see enough of the same complaint that i am reporting it. it has not happened at highway speed yet, and i am afraid it might based on the other jeep owners comments.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled and the battery warning indicator illuminated. the contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder, shifted into park, and the battery warning indicator turned off. the contact waited approximately five minutes and restarted the vehicle. as the contact was driving, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 34697040. the approximate failure mileage was 54,000.

While driving the engine shutoff and lost all power. had to coast to the side of the road in traffic. after taking it to the dealer, found out the engine consumed 2.5 quarts of oil [over half it's volume] in 6 months. there were no warnings of low oil level; engine just died. was told that this oil consumption was acceptable and if i wanted to prevent the engine from shutting off without any warning to check oil level every 1000-1500 miles to assure it's adequate. the computer apparently gives the driver no indication of low oil volume even after the engine shuts down for that exact reason. i was told chrysler only becomes concerned if the engine use a quart of oil within 1000 miles. jeep cherokee latitude/2016/4cly engine with 35k miles.

On 4 separate occassions, while in motion, the car completely shut down. on each stall, everything shut off completely including all lights dashboard etc. when i attempted to restart the car in the middle of the road (once on the highway) obstructing traffic, the car would not restart. only after waiting 3 -5 minutes did the car eventually start. twice i was almost rear ended.

Faulty engine with excessive oil consumption. engine piston blown at 54k, on brand new 2016 jeep cherokee, and consequently repaired under manufacturer warranty. fca and dealership difficult to work with and attempted everything to avoid the repair until i obtained legal counsel. the vehicle still randomly shuts off while being operated which makes it a danger to all. i have also experienced issues with the transmission, which the dealership said stemmed from the electrical system. the vehicle would get "stuck" in a particular and cause the vehicle to "jump" while attempting to idle down. lastly, the service shifter light has come on. the light comes on while the vehicle is in motion and does not appear to effect the operation of the vehicle. nevertheless, this is another problem added to the engine and transmission issues. this vehicle is trash and needs to be completely recalled. shame on fca for selling this vehicle with a ton of defects. shame on any authority that does not investigate the claims regarding this vehicle, or does it take a catastrophic event to gather your attention.

While driving the car on 2 separate occasions, the car died while in motion. the first time, i was leaving church and made a left turn. the car stalled and i was able to move out of the way of traffic onto the shoulder of the road. i put the vehicle in park and started it up a couple of times and was able to go. the second time (today), i turned into a parking lot and it just killed. i put the vehicle in park and then started the car again and moved on. fortunately, both times, i was able to safely address this. who knows what will happen the next time? this first happened the 4th sunday in may of 2018 and the second time, june 10, 2018.
