Problems with 2015 Jeep Cherokee VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

On average, the 2015 Jeep Cherokee starts to “feel” problems with the VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL and its various aspects after 24 930 miles.

Recently reported VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL problems on 2015 Jeep Cherokee

The vehicle service engine light keeps coming on, service transmission light comes on. vehicle shifts in and out of gear on its own. parking brake activates on its own. the start/stop malfunction light comes on. it has been towed in to dealership 3 times. these problems have occurred while vehicle was in motion.

-revving up on its own when in park. sometimes i have to wait up to a minute for it to settle down so i can put in into drive (original issue that only seems to have been exacerbated from the software update). -rpms spike when downshifting causing a slig

The vehicle hesitates when starting from a stop or accelerating from a turn or other slowing. when i add power the vehicle will lurch forward sometimes squealing the tires. this is particularly dangerous when turning left ahead of oncoming traffic. the vehicle hesitates while accelerating to pass or merge into highway traffic. the transmission software has been updated but the problem was made worse. the transmission has been replaced by jeep/chrysler but the problem remains. the chrysler service representative told me that the vehicle is designed to not shift into first gear unless it comes to a complete stop. this causes the vehicle to "bog down" when coming out of a turn. this is very troubling when turning left ahead of oncoming traffic. the natural reaction is to add power. this causes the transmission to shift into first gear and lurch the vehicle forward. i've made a complaint thru the chrysler customer care center. after another visit to the dealership i was told "the vehicle is performing as designed." if that is the case then why did they replace the transmission? this vehicle is not safe to drive.

My 2015 jeep cherokee latitude shut off on me while i was driving not even a full week of owning it. the vehicle gauges go to zero and i loose power steering and when i apply the gas pedal nothing happens. all i am able to do is press the brake pedal and hopefully not have anyone behind me so that i can try and pull over with no power steering. i have taken it into the dealer on several occasions showing them both video and photo documentation of what is happening and they have been unable to duplicate this issue and have not provided me with an alternative as to getting another vehicle or my money back. the vehicle first shut off on me 18sep2015 and has continued to do so on the highway and on city streets with the most recent time being 14feb2016. i have all of my documentation of every time its been in the shop for the same problem with no resolution being provided.

When starting from a stop car hesitates or jerks, sometimes clunks or grinds. does the same thing when trying to pass a vehicle, pulling out at a stop light does the same thing. i believe it could be the transmission as the car seems not to want to shift correctly and makes rough, jumpy grinding noises does this most of time time you drive it and has for along time.

When i start the car in the morning stationary, the car leaps forward and then the car rocks back and forth. ive complained about this before but dealer could not replicate issue since the issue usually only occurs when engine is cold. also, transmission slips and revs when in motion changing speeds using cruise control. the jeep has always done this since ive owned it.

I was driving to work on a thursday morning, the same route i always take, i am very fimilair with the raod and traffic in this area because i have been driving it for the last seven years straight. well on my way, i got into a accident, my new jeep has been into the shop a few times for a recall, i have only had the jeep for 7 months and have had to bring it in 2 times and now a 3rd for an airbag deployment issue. anyway, i was driving to work and my jeep does this thing where it feels like it shuts off when i am stopped and turns back on when i begin to move, i noticed it when i first purchased the jeep when i brought it in to the dealer, they told me it is suppose to do that because of the four wheel drive, i said ok fine i just wanted to make sure i was safe because that is one of the reasons i purchased this car. well on the way to work, my jeep did just that but lately it is doing a jerking move when it starts to accelarte now, making it feel like my car is jerking and accerating on its own which resulted in my hitting the car in front of me. now the jeep was not going at a fast speed at all, i am very familair with the location so i pay attention to detail here. i felt my jeep do the jerk movement and with my acceration i am certain this is what caused me to hit the car in front of me, i think there is something seriously wrong here and this needs to be addressed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that both key fobs would fail to start the vehicle and rear brake light failed the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the dealer replaced the brake light and noticed that the failure persisted. several days later, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was taken to the dealer again where it was diagnosed that the entire transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle independently accelerated without the accelerator being depressed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 13,000.

The transmission sometimes hunts for the proper gear. it also has tried to accelerate when slowing down to a stop. i live on a mountain and when descending i manually shift the transmission to 3rd gear, but when i do, the car will speed up before slowing down. this will cause a problem on snow covered roads. after doing some research, i found that other jeep owner's had the same issue and re-flashing the control module did not resolve the problem, so i have not taken the vehicle back to the dealer for the re-flash. *jb

The car will accelerate and raise rpm's (sometimes increases speed by 1mph) by itself at 26mph while coasting from 30mph or greater . i'm pretty sure the car is downshifting at this point, but no car i have drove will accelerate while not pressing the gas. when the car is downshifting from any other speed, i can feel the downshift however the car does not accelerate like it does at 26mph. only at 26mph it accelerates at the down shift. sometimes the acceleration is greater then other times, but happens 95% of the time. i was told this is a characteristic of the car and it needs to learn how i drive. which makes no sense because if this is a characteristic of a car, it is a very unsafe one. i feel that this is a safety issue as the car is accelerating on its own while i'm expecting it to de-accelerate. a software update was done on my car, but the issue was not fixed.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. the contact recently purchased the vehicle and was not informed of the recalls pertaining to the vehicle. the contact called to inquire about the vehicle speed control recall on her vehicle. the manufacturer was notified. the nhtsa campaign number was unknown. the contact had not experienced a failure. updated 09/21/15*lj updated 11/30/2017*cn

Purchased jeep and have had safety issues with inconsistent shifting since day one. i have returned to the dealer 19 times for shifting issues and other complaints. at the present time i continue to have a "service shifter" light come on in the vehicle. the light comes on while the vehicle is in motion. you can try to reset the shifter to let the computer try to recognize the error, but it doesn't work. technicians have told me not to drive with the light on as the car may shift in a different gear or even reverse. chrylser star technicians keep resetting the software, however the light continues to come back on randomly. i have expressed my concerns and fears with the shifting, however they do not know what is causing the problem nor how to fix the issue so they continue to reset the computer. i do not feel safe driving the vehicle as i never know when the light will come on nor what it will do. found error codes u146500 and p1c861d. performed flash updates. dates of issues: 6/29/15, 07/17/15, 09/06/15, 12/01/15. i also have problems with inconsistent shifting and take of. you can try to accelerate and the car will not go but the rpm's will rise. the car will suddenly take off after a 4-5 second delay. this has caused me great fear as sometimes you will go to turn and the car pauses before taking off. by the time it does take off you have turned in front of an oncoming car. again chrysler star technicians have told me i am "over sensitive" and the car functions as any 9 speed transmission is designed to do.

Going down hill, the car accelerated 8 to 12 miles an hour faster than the cruise was set for. car keeps accelerating until you hit the brake. does not hold the set cruise speed limit. i brought it to the dealer and after 1 1/2 hours they told me my cherokee limited was not equipped with an adaptive cruise control with stop and go. i was told by the service writer i just have to hit the brake until the decline is over and then hit resume on the panel. i know this is incorrect so is there a fix for this? we are taking a long drive trip to pennsylvania and i will need the cruise to enjoy my trip. the consumer stated the issue was the transmission. updated 10/15/15*jb

Less than 90 days after buying a new jeep cherokee i watched it towed away b/c it was un-driveable. it began in the morning when the gears were not shifting appropriately. then a few hours later, the engine would rev, and car would speed up, even though i wasn't pushing gas pedal. then reverse failed. then the parking brake light came on. finally, it stopped shifting up -- i had to floor it to go 5 miles an hour. i ultimately had to coast home. ....updated 11/02/15*bf updated 11/02/2017*cn

2015 jeep cherokee sport was purchased in october of 2014. around end may 2015 experienced problems with braking. while coming to a stop sign brake would be pressed down but vehicles rpm's would rev up and vehicle would start accelerating forward. vehicle was brought to shop after finally being able to make an appointment on 06/16/15. mechanic was able to experience the problem and reset module on vehicle. but check engine light came on. dealership gave vehicle back to us and we drove it for two more days and the problem still persisted. on 06/18/2015 a deer had entered highway and while braking vehicle again accelerated and hit the deer causing front end damage. problem could of been 100 times worse because there were also bicyclists on road as well as tractor trailer traveling behind. vehicle was brought to dealership via tow truck. tow truck driver even stated there is something severely wrong with the vehicle. when driver took vehicle off flat bed he put the vehicle in reverse and the vehicle went forward instead of reverse plus the emergency brake came on by itself. chrysler was contacted and they are doing an investigation on vehicle because of the severity. my wife and i just want them to take the vehicle back because we do not feel safe in it one bit.

My transmission keeps slipping on our brand new cherokee we saved up for! engine light keeps coming on and it jerks a lot when trying to slow down. getting into to car dealer asap! i'm so upset and scared to drive my two little kids in this car now that i think i know what the issue is. whether they fix this or not. i don't trust this car now.

While driving 55mph check engine lite along with stop/start lite came on and vehicle rapidly decelerated from 55mph to 30mph causing transmission to over heat which ultimately lead to transmission replacement on a new 2015 jeep,

Purchased car 5/13/15. on 5/30 noticed shimmy/vibration as i accelerated from a stopped position into a sharp right turn. appt made for service 6/8. at check-in, customer servc knew exactly what i was talking about; confirmed in test drive. reported star case #s1421000022, half-shafts (left & right axles) defective, need replacing. told car was completely safe to drive in this condition. verbal & written confirm that parts were being manufactured and were scheduled for release 9-2015. told by service mgr, chrysler issued an internal tsb 2-2015. parts warping when heated and fluid loss occurs. entire assembly needs to be replaced but parts haven't been manufactured, contracted with company that manufactures the trailhawk model (no problems reported on those parts). assured car was safe to drive but chrysler rep agreed to pay for rental car for long trip i had planned prior to purchase. researched -- i have found this issue dates back to the 2014 models. bottom line, they knew this part was defective prior to selling me the car in may. i agreed to be patient but it is now sept and have not had my "status update" inquiry phone call returned. vibration issue grew worse quickly, turned into a wobble. i can't drive it for extended periods on highways. as the car/parts heat up, the wobble in the front end is a constant, not just on turns. i feel as if the axles will break apart while driving. i do not have another car that i can use. there is no excuse for selling cars with a known defect and forcing a buyer to place their life in jeopardy. other issues have cropped up. engine races & doesn't always shift when it should; cruise control not consistent - loses speed. when returned to service, told they couldn't find a problem w/ cruise control, told transmission functioning correctly, computer is "learning" how i drive. brakes squeak after rain, told normal by svc mgr.

Car transmission failed, causing us to get hit numerous times. can not accelerate when necessary, sometimes it will go fine and other times gas pedal floored and go no where.

Two incidents jeep cherokee was on automatic cruise control come to almost stop when front car took a right turn and this caused almost rear collision. i was like 30 feet away from the front car. another incident: there was nobody around me and car applied brakes by itself and causes almost panic among the family members in the car and reduced the speed to 45mph.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. while driving at a low speed, the vehicle accelerated independently. the contact applied the brake pedal and was able to stop the vehicle. the failure recurred several times intermittently. the vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing on multiple occasions; however, the vehicle was not able to be diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 1,900. ma 10/6 updated 11/16/2017*cn

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the vehicle down shifts erratically. the contact also stated that while attempting to stop the vehicle, it began to increase in speed surging forward without warning. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was informed that the vehicle was functioning as designed. the vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred . the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 1,000.......updated 12/17/15 *bf the consumer stated chrysler agreed to purchase the vehicle back him. updated 12/21/15. *jb.........updated 01/06/16 *bf the consumer stated the problem was with the 9 speed transmission. if shifter erratically in all driving conditions, sometimes down shifting to a low gear at highway speeds and surged forward on its own when slowing down for a red light or stop sign. three upgrades were performed. however, the upgrades did not correct the problem. the consumer went to another dealer, because the check engine light kept illuminating, which was due to the transmission. the dealer stated there was an internal problem with the transmissions. the dealer recommended replacing the transmission. however, chrsyler offered to purchase the vehicle back from the consumer, in which he accepted. updated 01/11/16.*jb

Transmission failed at 1,000 miles. dealer replaced with a redesigned version. i started to get a wobble in the front end while i was accelerating. i brought it back and they said that it was a known issue and they were redesigning the front axles but the fix wasn't out yet. a few weeks later the metal frame in my sunroof broke and the weather stripping fell out and i couldn't close the shade. they informed me that the entire sunroof assembly had to be replaced because the frame was defective. the wobble continued to get worse and the car was shifting rougher than ever. i kept telling the dealership that there was something wrong, and they said "that's how the new 9 speed trans behave". when i brought the car in for the sunroof replacement i asked them to look at the wobble and trans again, and they informed me that the front axle was indeed bad. they put in the redesigned axles, and replaced the entire sunroof. i continue to have serious transmission issues and they put in a new valve body and updated the software. it's worse than ever. i kept complaining to jeep and all they said was "the dealership can't replicate your problem." i actually had the service manager in the car with me and he verified that the car does not drive properly- and when jeep called me, they told me that i had to go to another dealership. this car is not safe. it hesitates when you step on the gas, then it jerks very hard into second gear, it will accelerate on it's own because it can't find a gear to downshift, and the engine will spontaneously rev on it's own if i am descending a hill and its trying to downshift. the car will leap forward and accelerate until i press the brake hard enough to slow it down and it will finally shift. the rpms will go up for several seconds after i've applied the brake. the vehicle also rolls several inches after i put it in park now.

Vehicle has extreme hesitation when accelerating from anything than a complete stop to the point in may stand you in between lanes of oncoming traffic, when the transmission shifts it will do so violently causing tire spin and loss of traction/control. use extreme caution when driving. jeep has been unresponsive to even admitting this is an issue.

I was turning into my driveway and slowed down before hitting the slope, when i pressed the gas pedal to go up the driveway the engine revved up but the car didn't accelerate. after about a second the car jerked and sped up faster than normal to where i had to slam on my breaks to avoid hitting the garage door. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate while depressing the accelerator pedal. after a few moments, the vehicle accelerated independently. the failure recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to northwest dodge jeep chrysler (10600 sw canyon rd, beaverton, or 97005) to be diagnosed, but no failure codes were found. the contact took the vehicle to lithia chrysler dodge jeep ram of portland (633 ne 12th ave, portland, or 97232) where a software update was performed, but no failure was detected. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the approximate failure mileage was 17,000.

I bought my jeep one month ago. recently i noticed that engine revs up and accelerates by itself as i am trying to stop. i have to control this by pressing the break a little harder. i am afraid i will rear end another car. i had no idea this problem was so common. now i wish i hadn't purchased this vehicle. *js

The check engine light goes on and the car does not downshift properly. the engine revs up over 2500 rpms and the vehicle accelerates on its own when applying the brakes and trying to slow down. (last night the car revved up to 3200 rpms when coming to a stop.) *tr

Car lunges forward when decelerating. need to press hard on brake to control speed. *tr

My vehicle instantaneously picked up speed while i was coming to a stop; my foot was not on the gas pedal. a quick jerking motion of the steering wheel happened quickly with the acceleration. this caused me to press much harder on my brakes to stop my vehicle from hitting a car in front of me. this is a dangerous and very scary problem and i am grateful to not have caused harm to anyone. my gas consumption varies because of the required pedal pressure sometimes needed to accelerate since the gears seem not to switch over as they should. also, my radio has been blacking out, turning off and on, and failing to work at all. have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow for what was explained to me as a needed "software update." this is a new truck. my jeep has not yet made it to the required miles for its first oil change. (sigh). *tr

Car does not accelerate when pushing on gas, gets stuck in gear and then when it finally fins the right gear the whole vehicle bucks. reported the problem in january, was told to wait for the recall update, which didn't happen until june. have brought the vehicle in 2 more times for the same problem. this problem has caused me to almost be in a number or accidents when trying to merge on to highways or pass someone on the highway. in another incident my sunroof exploded from the inside out while driving on the highway and jeep is refusing to cover it under warranty even though nothing hit the vehicle and there are other reports online of this happening.

Have had several transmission issues and i feel unsafe in my vehicle. transmission shakes when accelerating from a low gear; transmission sticks when trying to accelerating (leaving me in dangerous traffic situations); transmission shift hard when driving in the city.

When driving the car between 22-25 mph highway or street there is always a lunging/rpm spike/hard shift that accelerates the car when slowing down. this also happens at 8, 30,35,40,45,50,55mph. it is not nearly as bad as the major issue between 22-25mph.

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. while driving at approximately 65 mph with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle accelerated without the accelerator pedal being depressed. the failure occurred while traveling downhill and recurred numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 100. updated 8/10/15*cn

While braking at 24 miles per hour the car abruptly downshifts and causes the vehicle to accelerate. i have noticed the longer i drive the vehicle, it will happen while i am slowing down at higher speeds at well. i have taken the jeep to the dealership and they have flashed and updated my transmission but they said it was fixed but it was not. it is acting up more than it was before. it is incredibly dangerous to drive this car especially when trying to brake around a curve because it will speed up by itself. *tr

Purchased vehicle nov 2014, shortly after i noticed it would shift irregularly and the vehicle tended to cruise on its own when off the gas. what made me take to the dealer was i noticed that when coming to a stop, the rpms of the engine will increase and cause the car to start going faster while applying the brakes. so i took to the dealer. dealer did not investigate the issue. they preformed software updates. none fixed the issue. time passed, the jeep started to develop more noises in the transmission, it started to put gears harshly so i took it to the dealer again after it continued to do the same issues. dealer claimed there was an issue with the transmission and it was replaced along with updates. new transmission and same issues. jeep tries to cruise when off the gas, tries to accelerate when slowing or braking, rpms go up when slowing, noises coming from the transmission, irregular shifting, does not feel like a new car. took to the dealer about 3-4 more times since transmission swap for software updates and nothing got better. the jeep is actually getting worse. now it has starting slamming in gears when coming to a stop, has some sort of wobble when accelerating, noises from the front (sounds like clutches slipping or something) and dealer has no fix. i had a ride along with dealer rep and they claim its normal for the vehicle, that its software and i must wait for updates. it is now oct 20, 2016 and i have lost countless time and money trying to get this jeep correct. i have tried to get the dealer to give me my money back and they do not. i opened a case with fca when transmission was swapped and they have not helped to get out of the car. why should i be stuck with a faulty and dangerous vehicle? fca and dealer should be held responsible for the sale of a faulty vehicle and refund me in full. the vehicle should be considered a lemon from day one

Vehicle was traveling on interstate highway when service transmission light came on in the stored messages, then the malfunction indicator light and service engine light came on. within minutes, driveability issues became apparent with no acceleration and slipping gears/unable to shift into gears. once the car slowed/stopped, the vehicle was unable to shift into lower gears to move. the vehicle had received the p56 recall to update the computer software to the transmission control module one month prior to this incident. *tr

I purchased a 2015 cherokee sport in october 2014. since then i have noted several recurring problems. having never owned a brand new i thought perhaps there was some early mile growing pains but these problems persist. the screen malfunctions at will; sometime the rear camera is engaged when driving forward, the screen locks on the disclosure/acceptance page. voice recognition/command has never worked. unintended acceleration when at a complete stop (reminds me of an unruly dog on a leash trying to leap forward). delayed acceleration when the gas pedal is depressed causing it to suddenly leap into motion risking hitting a car in front of you in city traffic (i live in los angeles ? this is particularly concerning) or a wall behind you (i back into my parking space). when parallel parking or in a 3 point scenario (d-r-d) the car, although clearly placed in the reverse the car will roll forward before reversing. often putting the car in reverse, waiting several seconds (4 to 5) before releasing the break will do the trick but just as often, it makes no difference. gear transitions are sloppy. this car does not shift it lunges. i'm surprised the [xxx] thing doesn't bite although it tries. i thought these were my pet peeves but it appears i am not alone. i wish i had read these earlier complaints. i would have returned it to post haste. i hate this car but am not in the financial position to buy another. purchased from a dealer 50 miles away (best price) has made it difficult to take into the dealership. i have finally scheduled 2-days off from work to take it in. i wish i was in the position to not just drop it off but leave it there. if i had the money i would not hesitate. *tr information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2015 jeep cherokee. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly shut off. the contact indicated that after restarting the vehicle, it resumed normal operation. also, the contact indicated that while at a stop light attempting to accelerate the vehicle hesitated to respond before suddenly accelerating at a higher rate of speed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who did not determine the cause of the failure. the manufacturer was notified but not solution was offered. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 23.

With the cruse control on and set at 60mpg when going down a hill it picks up speed to over 70mph. going up hill it varies as much as 4mph. the cruse control does not control the speed as it should, very dangerous!
