Recently reported ELECTRICAL SYSTEM problems on 2016 Honda Pilot

While stopped at a freeway off ramp. the car automatically shut off the engine per the start/stop feature. when the light turned green the car did not restart and instead completely shut off and put itself into park. i had trouble restarting while traffic built up behind me. this is not the first time this has happened. it is a very dangerous and disconcerting problem.

Keyless start system problem being displayed. still able to start vehicle, unknown how much longer or what if any features can and will be disabled. several other owners are complaining about the same exact issue. seems to be related to defective start/stop switch.

On january 13th, i left my home to pick up my son, julian, 3 years old, at preschool. his preschool is approximately 3 miles from our home. i picked him up, and drove the same distance back to our house, arriving home around 4:45pm. i had no unusual warning notifications or any unusual experience driving to and from the preschool. i parked the car in our driveway. julian and i exited the vehicle, and walked to our front door. as we approached the front door i smelled smoke, and looked back at the car. i noticed a small flicker in the passenger side lower headlight. upon closer look, i realized this was in fact a flame. julian and i left our bags on the porch, stepped off of our front porch, and moved away from the house and car, and called 911. as we waited for the fire department, we watched this small flame grow to full flames, engulfing the engine, front hood, and front of the car. the police and fire department arrived, and put out the fire. the car was towed out of our driveway. a police report was filed with the montclair police dept. officer anthony swan #232 patrol division montclair police headquarters, 647 bloomfield ave., montclair nj 07042 [email protected] report # 20-005325 i then called our insurance provider, usaa, following the incident. they have taken the car into their possession and initiated an origin & cause investigation. we purchased the car new. we have not been in a collision. the car has been serviced twice annually. it was serviced last week. it has ~30,000 miles on it. the dealer that sold us the car, paul miller honda, in nj, has been unresponsive, telling us to reach out the the national honda office. i have filed a case with honda, and have been told someone will reach out to me. that has not happened.

Keyless start error message persists upon starting the vehicle despite keyless remote (for the moment) still working. message stays on while vehicle is being driven. multiple drivers of same model of pilot report same problem starting between 35-40k miles.

Keyless starter system problem light comes and goes. mileage 50k - have changed key fob battery, issue still randomly displays - seems to be more often now. find that if i try to not rush the turn off process it will sometimes help - ie put car in park - wait a few seconds, then shut off vehicle - doesn't always prevent message - quite unnerving wondering when i wont be able to start the vehicle - this has been going on for last 10k miles

Intermittent 'keyless start system problem'. it's very concerning and whenever i bring my car to the shop they seem to have never heard of this issues before. car works, but it is scary to wonder if my car will suddenly turn off or not turn on. please have this investigated.

The keyless start and entry light will not turn off. additionally many complaints about it and honda ignoring the problem. even more severe problems have been reported to you. this will lead to the car just stalling in the middle of the road. i have 2 children. please have honda address this asap.

The car's idle stop is not working properly. the radio consistently drops out and headlights flicker when releasing the brake to start the car after idle stop was engaged. multiple times the car has now failed to start and appears to stall out, and makes me shutoff the whole car and restart it. this is a safety issue as some people do not realize and might rear end me. i have taken it to my local dealer, been told they cannot replicate it initially, to them validating the issue and wanting me to bring it back. i don't have confidence in them fixing the issue at this point as they do not have familiarity with it, yet i see many complaints about it online. i feel this problem is more widespread than honda is communicating and the car has a fault in the auto idle stop design that they are not resolving.

Car brakes by itself, shakes the steering wheel and shuts off and loses power ranging in speeds from 20 -60mph. on double lane roads to interstates in the rain and sunny dry days.

At startup, the dashboard warning light indicating "keyless start system problem" appeared and was only removed, perhaps temporarily by following a routine set forth at a community website. was informed that a repair at the dealer would cost $300+.

Keyless start system problem is on in the dash won't start or turn off sometimes

Will not start using the keyless fob. all trouble lights turn on when trying to start. foot on brake as needed to start. still won't start. the auto lock feature won't work. new batteries in the key fob don't help. had the car towed to the dealership and when it was lowered from the tow truck it started right up.

Right before it's turned on and while driving. i get an error message saying "keyless start system problem". then vehicle will sometimes not turn on randomly. have not taken the vehicle in for repair because i did much research and many people have taken their 2016 pilot to the dealer and after spending money, the dealer could not fix it.

Twice now my 2016 honda pilot elite with auto idling stop feature has stalled at intersection lights. while stopped at the red light the engine goes off and normally when i lift my foot off the brake it restarts and accelerates when i push the gas pedal. however, in these instances when i lifted my foot off the brake and went to accelerate, the engine completely stalled. a couple of warning lights came on, unfortunately i didn't read which ones because i was at busy intersections. the car would not start even after putting it into park. it took about 2 minutes before the engine would start. other drivers were trying to get around me, honking. the 2nd time, i was going to make a left turn and just had to wait until i could start it, watching in my rear view mirror hoping i wouldn't get rear-ended. i drive 75+ miles to work on a very busy and slow moving california freeway with lots of stop and go traffic. i am very concerned about our safety if this were to happen on a busy freeway where drivers don't realize i am dead in the water. i called american honda and they advised me to get it into a dealer right away. i got an appointment for this am at 0700 but as of now (11:30am) haven't heard a word. they are charging me $125 just to run diagnostics despite the fact i have an extended warranty. the service person had a definite "could care less attitude". after reading on this website and others, this is happening a lot and honda doesn't seem to have an answer. this is the 2nd major issue with this car. the last issue involved my car basically shutting down on the freeway at 70mph, going into a lower gear, every possible warning light on the dash lit up. had to drive one mile on the shoulder to get it off the freeway. this happened twice to me and a "computer patch was done". it seems fixed but now i am not sure at all what is going on with this car.

When the vehicle is in an auto-idle stop (say at a traffic light) the car does not restart and stalls once the accelerator is pressed. this has happened sporadically and is very dangerous. the dealership said i can bring it in for a diagnosis but that they don't expect to find anything. this has happened numerous times and without warning. the most recent time was 10/23/19

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 honda pilot. after purchasing the vehicle from an unknown used car lot and traveling 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. also, the emissions and transmission failure indicators illuminated. the voice command instructed the contact to pull over as soon as possible as the vehicle completely shut off and lost braking and steering ability. the contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and restarted the vehicle; however, the emissions indicator was still illuminated. the vehicle was driven back to the used car lot, but they were not able to replicate the failure. the contact was advised to take the vehicle to the nearest dealer. the vehicle was taken to autonation honda spokane valley (8201 east sprague ave, spokane valley, wa 99212), but was not diagnosed or repaired. the vehicle was currently at the dealer. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 111,000.

Vehicle continues to completely shut down (engine completely turning off, all lights turning on in console, requiring vehicle to be placed in park and then ignition button pressed to restart engine.) when stopping at a redlight. continues to get worse and more frequent. took to dealer and they say nothing is wrong. please fix this! my families safety is top concern@

'keyless start system problem' error happens intermittently. this has been happening for a number of weeks. based on searching this problem online it appears to be a problem with most keyless start pilots around 30-50k miles. we had one instance where it took a few tries to get the car started. very disappointed that this hasn't been recalled.

While stopped at a traffic light the car put itself into park without my (the driver) knowledge. when the light turned green i attempted to accelerate however the car was in park. i attempted to shift the car into drive and it would not do so. i had to turn the car off and then back on in order to place the car into drive and proceed through the intersection.

Previous complaint nhtsa id 11111894 submitted 7/17/18. for car stalling after entering into auto idle stop. replaced battery in august 2018 and didn't have any problems until now. has happened at least 3 times now in sept. and oct 2019.. at first, radio or dvd player would cut out but has progressed to full on stalling after entering auto idle stop. same problem as before and all other complaints. after car goes into idle stop, it does not restart after take foot off brake. have to put car in park, press brake, and push start button to get it to restart. can take several tries and several minutes.

Tl* the contact owns a 2016 honda pilot. the contact stated that the keyless start system error message displayed without warning. the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the failure mileage was 38,109.

2016 pilot does at red lights when it goes into hybrid/idle mode. car takes several minutes to restart.

I have a 2016 honda pilot with 41k miles on it and out of the blue a light came on saying there's a "keyless remote system problem" checking online and it seems to be a issue with the majority of this model and around the same mileage. some owners can't start their car and the honda dealer has no answer. they charge you about 200 to try and diagnose.

Remote restart system problem message intermittently displays. key fob battery has been replaced and issue persists. error occurring more frequently when vehicle is started and remains displayed while driving. seems to occur now about every third restart.

Keyless start system error this started appearing after the car was turned off but the accessory system did not turn off. i tried starting and turning it off multiple times and the accessory system would not shut down. after reversing the car and then driving forward and returning to park, the system did turn off but the error warning persisted for several days despite the car functioning properly. the warning went away and returned a few days later and i have also had key not detected messages despite replacing the battery in the fob. at the dealership, i am being told this is a common problem with 2016 pilot models, but no recall has been issued.

When car comes to a stop in traffic, at stop sign or stop light the engine will completely shut down. it does not restart by stepping on the gas. i need to put the car in park and push restart. a message some times appears on the dash that the collision assist has been activated even though there is nothing infront of the vehicle.

This issue has occurred about a dozen times over the last few months, but i will simply detail the latest incident which happened yesterday. car was in busy stop-n-go traffic. auto-idle start/stop was enabled, as it is every time you start the car. after car was stopped for several seconds, released the brake. radio cut out, made a popping noise (as if it was trying to start back up), but pilot just stalled. dashboard lit up with all lights. had to switch the gear to <p>. then press the brake and press the start/stop ignition button. had to do this several times before the car would actually start. was on a very busy 5-lane highway,in the far left lane. extremely dangerous to have our pilot die in traffic like this. we do not feel safe driving this car, especially with our kids in it!!

The 2016 honda pilot elite auto idle is not functioning properly. while stopping at a stop light on city street, the auto idle turn the engine off to save fuel when i apply the brake and the car stopped while the light is red. once the light turns green the engine stall when i lift my feet off the brake and the dashboard lights flashed, radio is off and lights and radio turn on again but engine is still off. i had to put the car in park and restart the ignition in order to restart the car. this is a dangerous situation to address during busy traffic area and time. i checked the honda dealership and there is no recall for this issue. online community board said that there are many owners with similar issues. honda needs to fix this for their customers.

The car started showing "keyless start system problem" a few months ago, and the car is now only 10,800 miles! it takes lucks to turn on the car and some more lucks to turn the car's engine off. this is completely unacceptable for a car at this young milage! when do a quick google search, there are plentiful of same issues posted online. when is honda going to the responsible to recall this issue?

Car turns off completely while driving, does not respond to attempts to restart right away

I have gotten an error on my honda pilot ex-l 2016 "keyless entry system error. at 47k miles. i have google this issue and looks like all 2016 models are getting this error around the same mileage. i believe that this is a manufacturing defect for the push to start button. i would like for honda to own this problem and cover the repair for this error. when i try to start my car it takes about a minute for me to get it started because it won't start and the same thing for when i need to shut it off. this could be a dangerous matter incase of an emergency that you need to start your car fast or shut it off.

The honda pilot has a feature called auto engine idle stop. to meet emission standards, this feature puts the engine into a stop/off mode when you brake for more than 3 seconds. however, this feature sometimes causes the car battery to fail and the car to stall. this could happen when stopped at a traffic light or on a highway stopped in traffic. if the battery hasn't had enough time to recharge, the car might stall and need to be completely shutdown, wait a while and maybe will restart. we bought our car in late 2015. the issue presented itself by 2016/2017, mostly as brief blips and the car would restart. in summer 2018, after repeated visits to honda and numerous times of the car completely stalling at traffic lights, we chose to replace the battery. our honda service centers kept telling us that the battery tests showed it was fine and that the feature isn't suppose to engage if the battery doesn't have "enough juice" to restart. but clearly, that doesn't work, because my car would indeed completely stall and need to try to restart. i once had to wait five minutes stuck at a light in the middle of a 3 lane road, and my car finally restarted. but once we paid to replace the battery (that supposedly was fine), the car didn't blip or stall. but one year later, it started happening again. sometimes the car will just blip, where all the lights, radio and air conditioning will briefly cut out and then come back on as the feature re-engages the engine. but sometimes, it just won't restart. there is a button you can hit to disable the auto engine idle stop feature. but you must remember to hit every time you start the car. if you forget, all it takes is stopping at one traffic light and the car could stall. there are numerous online reports of similar issues with this feature.

Keyless start system problem message on dash. wasn't able to start vehicle for 5 minutes. once started was not able to stop engine. this seems to be a recurring problem with 2016 honda pilot. this could be a dangerous issue under circumstances where car will not start.

Our honda pilot shuts down while being operated, typically while attempting to resume driving after having been stopped at intersections, making turns, red lights, etc. all electrical components become unresponsive, including starter, shift controller, hazard lights, etc. typically takes to 5 minutes to restart, leaving us stranded in traffic; an incredibly dangerous situation. this has occurred (5 times so far) with the "auto engine idle stop" engaged and is suspect. 1st attempt by dealer to diagnose & repair involved replacing the battery despite testing "good". shutdowns continued; the last occurred in a 5-lane highway with my wife and 3-year old child on board. 2nd attempt to diagnose & repair, took 4 weeks and a suggested repair of replacing the battery (previous battery less than a year old) and a new starter @ $1,600; even though the technician stated both were "good". conversations with the dealership/technicians acknowledge the suspected problem electrical/computer based but the on-board computer does not record these events. the dealership/technicians state they reported and researched this issue via their in-house tech site but we were told this issue is unknown and isolated to our car. our solution being a mutually acknowledge, unnecessary repair. i debated their $1,600 "solution" and questioned warranty coverage and was informed if not done, would be recorded as "customer refuses repair". when i asked if the $1,600 would be refunded when the issue resumed (since well agreed the suggested repair was not the solution), i was informed "no". we have not done the repair. a simple internet search shows this is not an isolated problem as we were told and is even recorded here on the nhtsa website numerous times, verbatim to our experience.

Keyless entry problem car won't start

Keyless start system problem error message when starting engine. 2016 honda pilot 45k miles. my honda service dept wants to hook it up for $170 to diagnose problem. he did say if the warning light is orange, not to worry about it too much (i guess red means worry). new batteries in both fobs. this has been ongoing intermittently for 6 weeks - now constant

My 2016 honda pilot has started displaying "keyless start system problem" on dashboard after starting the vehicle. the vehicle still operates normally with exception of notice on the dashboard. i've researched and numerous other 2016 honda pilots are having same issue with no resolution.

Keyless start system problem. the error message comes and goes over the last week. what's concerning is the reports of the entire car turning off in the middle of driving or idling. this is a known problem in 2016 honda pilots yet nothing is being done about it.

The keyless start system problem warning light has come on several times. the car still started but it appears to be a malfunction in the warning light system itself.

2016 honda pilot began displaying "keyless start system problem" on dash board after starting car. vehicle still operates normally minus the warning light and message on dash. numerous others are having the same issue with the same vehicle and year.

While idol at red light, the automatic idol kicked in for power save yet jerked and all red light indicators turned on, including parking breaks, and car seized up. no power, no ability put car in park or drive. on/off switch no reaction to turn car on or off. no brake function. i sat in an unresponsive vehicle at very busy intercetion. luckily the vehicle behind me was stopped and only laid on their horn for 2 red light cycles rather than hitting me. i activated my emergency flashers yet other driver did not respond. i repetitively kept pushing power button in effort for car to respond and restart, eventually did and was able to drive off. have appt with dealership in am.

When driving in eco mode the car shuts partially down at red lights and other stops as is expected, but lights, radio, ac., etc still function. every 5 or 6th time my car now shuts off completely and requires me to restart it.

When my car stops while applying the break paddle completely, the car may start 'idle stop' which turns off the engine. the engine may restart either by releasing the break paddle or when ac or battery needs the engine to turn back on. we have had multiple occurrences where the car will completely reset the electrical system shutting down all the lights, displays, radio and engine, and it may or may not restart the engine. sometimes, it requires multiple presses of the engine start button which may take multiple seconds at a stop. this creates a safety hazard where cars behind may rear end us while we try to restart. today, it happened to my wife in motion after the engine restarted and she was in the middle of an intersection. i wonder if this could even happen on a railway... we reported it twice and tried fixing it at a honda shop (1st texas honda @ austin, tx), they made multiple claims including bad battery that required replacing it (issue still reoccurred), blaming it on a power cable that goes to an optional trailer hitch connection that is not in use, but have not tried tried replacing the faulty idle start/engine module. searching thru the internet, there are multiple reports of the same issue. https://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/pilot/2016/engine/auto_idle_stop_does_not_work.shtml there is no recall or a root cause analysis reported by honda trying to resolve the issue for the owners. needless to say, trying to take a video/photo when it happens is not simple, largely, because we don't hold our phones while driving the car and secondly, it's random event when it happens... the issue repeats multiple times a week, but not on every stop. worse at hot temperatures.

Key fob system error

My honda pilot will stall out when coming out of the auto start/stop feature at an intersection. this problem started happening in july 2019 after having the transmission double replaced. this problem has now happened four different times and extremely dangerous for my wife and kids who are left stranded at an intersection. my wife has to attempt to recycle the power to the pilot by holding down the power button to the pilot. my wife has captured multiple videos of the dash with all the error messages popping up after it has died.

Car shuts down and stalls when idle stop engages very frequently over the past year in the middle of the intersection or highway. have taken in to honda dealers multiple times but they cannot recreate the problem and say the battery tests ok yet recommend changing the battery?!

In addition to "keyless entry error" message that keeps popping up on my display these past few months, today, my car won't start and is displaying the following error messages : "vehicle stability assist problem", "hill start assist problem", "trailer stability assist problem", "road departure mitigation system problem". mileage is about 54,000. i had my car in the shop in both 2017 and 2018 for transmission problems, too. this is the worst honda i have ever owned.

Keyless start system problem

At about 47250 miles on my 2016 honda pilot lx awd, keyless start system problem displays on instrument panel. started on 6/29/2019. all i did was push the engine start stop button 2 times before pressing the brake and actually starting up the vehicle. then then message appears. no hesitation upon starting either or any weird sounds, nor any other warning lights on display. vehicle purchased as a certified pre-owned with about 20000k on it in 2018. key fob battery is good in both keys.
