Problems with 2018 Honda CR-V SERVICE BRAKES

On average, the 2018 Honda CR-V starts to “feel” problems with the SERVICE BRAKES and its various aspects after 8 687 miles.

Recently reported SERVICE BRAKES problems on 2018 Honda CR-V

While driving at about 55mph on rt.28 south epsom, nh the car just stopped no cars in front of me. it stopped for no reason

While driving on an unobstructed city street, at night, i drove under pedestrian bridge that was casting a shadow on the road. the collision mitigation system beeped and alerted to brake. the car then began braking very hard to a near full stop in the middle of the street. i had to pull off the side of the road to avoid obstructing traffic.

While driving leisurely on a winding road called sullivan trail, scotrun pa we received an alert on the vehicle dashboard: "brake system road departure mitigation system problem" (rdms). the rdms button was not on at the time. we were about 2 minutes from home so the vehicle was driven home and parked. at home, we pressed the rdms button and it did not light to engage. through google search, we found out other honda owners have experienced similar problems at the approximate 5000 mile mark. our vehicle was purchase brand new at ray price honda in stroudsburg pa in november 2018. it has had one oil service change at the same dealership at the 5000 mile mark. currently, it has 5570 miles. we understand from an article online that honda does not give warrant on this issue which could cost 3000 to repair. the vehicle is driven mainly for short and careful drives around stroudsburg -- food shopping and the like for our home. with such limited drives, it should surely be more reliable.

Problems first presented: auto door lock malfunction, auto- rain sensing wiper malfunction would come on when dry, not come on when wet; navigation system went crazy on the highway flashing on and off when using it; twice the auto breaking system came on when on the highway with nothing in front of me....going 50 mph! i very well could have been rear ended. i saw no obstruction on the road. i have had the vehicle in twice to the dealer only to be told it does not happen and they have no bulletins regarding these issues.

I was going about 25 miles per hour at about 6:00 pm on 10/21/2019 in my 2018 honda crv exl in pittsburgh, pa. when the car's automatic braking system kicked in and slammed on my breaks abruptly for absolutely no reason at all. it was a very clear day, no rain, very well paved, maintained, and marked 2 lane city street. there were absolutely no cars in front of me or coming in the other direction. this came out of no where and i was shocked and confused as to why this happened. i own 3 crvs!!! i have always loved hondas and now i'm fearful of them. i'm afraid to let my teenage daughter drive it. thank god i was only going 25 miles per hour and no one was behind me ! please honda! this is real!!!! this is dangerous!! fix this problem!!! our lives depend on it!

I was driving my 2018 honda crv on a city street between 25 and 30 mph when the brakes suddenly applied themselves and the car jerked forward very hard. my foot was on the acclerator.there was no car, pedestrian of object in front of my car nor behind my car. the weather was clear, no rain for several days.i think it was the automatic braking system. i called the dealer as soon as i got home. they are closed. i will be taking my car to the dealer first thing in the morning

I was travelling approximately 50 mph on local highway. no cars directly in front of me for a 1/4 mile. it had rained overnight and the road conditions were slightly damp but no puddles. i was crossing through an intersection and the car's 'brake' alarm (forward collision system) falsely triggered on the dashboard and instantly slammed on my brakes and brought my 2018 crv to a dead stop. my cargo went flying forward and my head jerked forward hard. i was wearing my seat belt. no car was immediately behind me otherwise they would have for sure crashed into my car. i contacted my local honda dealer and brought the vehicle in that afternoon. they said they would run diagnostics on it. they called me back the next day and said that there "were no trouble codes stored in the vehicle". they said they "contacted honda and there were 'no known issues' and there was nothing else they could do for me". they suggested i turn off the forward collision system if i was concerned. this is crazy and hazardous. the vehicle should not put me (and others) in danger like this. thank god my wife and kids were not in the vehicle when this happened. thank god no one was behind me. i pray they aren't when this happens again. there needs to be some sort of recall or warning regarding this.

Vehicle was traveling westbound on i-90 in massachusetts in the travel lane at between 65-68 mph. the cruise control was not engaged; the lane keeping assist feature was not active. it was around 7:00 pm. no cars in the passing lane. a tractor trailer was about 200-300 feet in front. the dashboard chimed and displayed the following three warning messages: collision mitigation braking system, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist system. the first time each message was displayed a chime sounded; the messages continued to rotate through the display for the next thirty minutes. the messages stopped when we got home and put the car in the garage in park. additionally, the light for 'brake system' (near the temperature gauge) came on. i brought the car in today for service (it just happened that it was scheduled for an oil change); i told the service advisor about what had happened; the technician working on the vehicle said no codes were being displayed. he took it for a ride but could not get the messages to come up (it only happened one time). the service advisor said it was probably 'just a glitch'.

While driving on a main road, i went through an intersection with no cars in front or to the side of me, but 2 cars close behind me. when i went through the intersection, my brake lights began flashing and then my car stopped itself on impact. the 2 cars behind me swerved around me almost causing an accident. there were no vehicles that should have set off the automatic breaking and the weather conditions were fine.

Traveling 45 mph on secondary road and car suddenly hit brake mode for no reason. no other traffic on road. vehicle skidded and threw everything in vehicle to floor including pet. whipped neck very hard.

2018 honda crv was suddenly flashed 'brake message' on dash and brake applied by themself with my foot on acceleration pedal during about 65 miles per hour driving on freeway, there was no cars in front of this vehicle. i dropped this car to honda dealer on same day this malfunction happened (sep. 13, 2019), and picked up sep 16, 2019. they found error code, checked battery, hard reset the associated system.

My recent encounter was on a two lane road traveling at 40 mph. no cars were in front of me and a car was about 2 car lengths behind me. a mini school bus was heading in the other direction about 2 car lengths on the other side of the road. i had my two grandchildren in the car with me, when all of a sudden the car breaked hard sending all my things on the floor and scarring my granddaughters. i was shaken myself being nearly rear ended by the car behind me. i took it in to atlantic honda, and was told ' no problems were found on the computer and could not duplicate the issue'. 'never had anyone complain of this'. i also advised them, the break light flashes 'out of the blue' while driving on the highway with no other cars around. i was told to bring it in if it happens again. i feel on edge driving the car not knowing if it will break unexpectedly!

The collision mitigation system part of honda sensing will automatically and randomly engage while driving, causing the breaks to be self applied abruptly even when there is nothing in front of the car. this is extremely dangerous and almost caused multiple accidents. honda doesn't believe there is a problem. this has happened multiple times already.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while driving 15 mph, the brakes failed. when the contact depressed the brake pedal, it would not depress and the entire electrical system went out. the instrument panel gauges lit up and flashed. the vehicle drove through a stop sign and over railroad tracks. the emergency brake did not engage. the contact let the vehicle roll to a stop. the contact turned off and restarted the vehicle several times, but the failure recurred. after three attempts, the contact was able to pull the vehicle to the middle of the road and had it towed to a dealer. airport honda (3069 alcoa hwy, alcoa, tn 37701, (865) 970-2300) instructed the contact to have honda roadside service tow the vehicle to them for diagnostic testing. the contact informed the dealer that she felt unsafe in the vehicle and did not want it back. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure mileage was 28,000.

Driving down a country road doing about 55mph on july 28,19 my vehicle suddenly came to a dead stop for no reason. closest vehicle in front was 9-10 car lengths ahead. nothing on the side of the road or directly in front of me. if a vehicle was behind me i would have been rear ended. a malfunction such as this could cause a deadly unavoidable accident. at the time i did not have the adaptive cruise control set and had no control of gas pedal when this collision mitigation braking assist system activated. this vehicle is a time bomb for anyone driving it. this is clearly a safety hazard.and one which needs to be investigated.

Computer break system and applied brakes failed to stop our honda crv 2018 as we were exiting the santa fe opera in a slow moving line of cars down an incline. the brakes were applied at least three times and would not engage. car began to accelerate. at this time we made the decision to "select a pine tree" as a way to stop the crv. this was done to prevent a possible chain reaction of rear end collisions to a dozen or more cars and possible injury to the occupants. the air bags deployed. car was totaled by the insurance company.

While traveling down a 2 lane road at about 35 mp/hr i noticed a large metal plate that a utility company had used to cover a hole in the road. as the car approached the plate, the collision mitigation braking system activated unexpectedly, throwing me violently forward in the seat. there were 2 cars behind me that almost rear ended me. i reported this incident to the car dealership and to american honda client services within a couple of days and asked that the cmbs feature be disabled because i fear it will activate again unexpectedly at some point, causing a loss of control of the vehicle and, or, a rear end collision. they said that the feature could not be disabled. it could only be shut down by an on/off button on the dash. however, it automatically resets when you start the engine. because of this unexpected and violent experience, i feel that the cmbs is a dangerous feature and that it could cause a very serious accident. i'm asking that the nhtsa get honda to fix the cmbs issue before someone is seriously injured. thank you.

Vehicle was at approximately 45 mph on a local street when the collision avoidance braking automatically engaged. not a single vehicle or object was in front of the car.car came to a screeching halt. had to veer off onto center of the road onto left turn only lane to avoid rear car crash. dangerous condition. lost control of the vehicle. stepping on the brakes or accelerator could not override the event till car came to a screeching halt.

My vehicle was in motion traveling at 30 mph on a city street. my vehicle suddenly flashed the brake warning and the brakes were engaged automatically until the vehicle reached a full stop. there was no reason for this as there were no cars in front of me or any other obstacle in my path. no car was in the oncoming lane either. this is the 2nd time this has happened in this vehicle under the same conditions.

3 time while driving on the fwy 65 mph with the cruise control activated, lane control activated, and the distance set to minimum, with no one in front of me, the car detected the car to the right of me and slammed on the brakes, and causing the person behind me to slam on their brake almost causing an accident. this happened between april of 2019 and oct of 2019. when i brought it into the dealership they said that there was dirt on the milliwave radar, found code p2583-97, i found this to be highly unlikely because the car was spotless. the second time i took the car to the dealership, they said the could not duplicate the problem. when asked how they diagnosed the car they said they drove it 10 miles down a bolsa chica rd. i told the sevice person that that was not the same conditions as i was driving and that they could not have gotten the car up to 65 mph when the speed limit was 45 mph and it wasn't a fwy. her response was we are not allowed to drive cars on the fwy. i said then how are you do duplicate the condition of the problem. this car has been into the dealership for multable electronic issue, none of which have been solved yet. all i get is the same answer, cant duplicate the problem. i believe this car has had these problems since it was sold new and the person before me turned this car in with only 8000 miles on it for a new car that they could trust. this is a safety issue ad could cause me to get into an accident thats not my fault.

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while driving 50 mph and exiting a freeway, the forward collision avoidance system independently activated and caused the vehicle to come to an immediate stop. the vehicle also lunged to the right. the contact stated that the failure also occurred on another occasion while driving 30 mph. john eagle honda of dallas (5311 lemmon ave, dallas, tx 75209) was called at (214) 431-5997 and an appointment was made to have the vehicle diagnosed. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 2,800. *bf*jb

Accident avoidance system engaged for no reason, locking the brakes momentarily while driving at 40 mph. may 5, 2019, clear day, 4:30p, heading east (sun behind), nothing in front of the vehicle and traffic far behind. five lane road - two lanes each direction and a middle turn lane -- and straight in this area. turned right onto the road from an intersection and got up to speed. the warning sound from the accident avoidance system beeped three times while the brakes were harshly applied causing light skidding in dry conditions. then the brakes were just as suddenly released. happened very quickly and would have caused an accident if i was in traffic. my foot was still on the gas pedal and the braking force made me push the pedal more. extremely unsafe incident. vehicle had about 3,710 miles, 2018 cr-v ex 1.5 turbo awd with cvt.

2018 honda cr-v. consumer writes in regards to the collision mitigation braking system. (cmbs) malfunction. *ld *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2018 honda cr-v. while driving between 55 and 60 mph, the brake warning indicator illuminated and the vehicle decelerated independently. in addition, while driving with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle decelerated from 58 to 45 mph independently. don ayres honda (4740 lima rd, fort wayne, in 46808, (260) 484-0551) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 6,700.

Driving down road at 30 mph. nearest car 1 block ahead in front of me. car braked hard and suddenly with out warning and for no apparent reason). fortunately no one was behind me of there would have been an accident.

On two occasions the automatic breaking system engaged. on the first occasion, i was driving at a speed of approximately 30 mph and the road was completely clear with no cars in front of me or objects in the road. on the second occasion, i was driving over a railroad track at approximately 10 or 15 mph. there were no cars in front of me. both times the breaks engaged abruptly and i was lucky there were no cars following closely or it would have caused a collision.

The automatic braking system engages when there is no imminent danger. sometimes it occurs when the vehicle in front exits onto an off-ramp and slows down. even though they are not in front of my car, the auto braking triggers. in other situations there has been no discernable reason for the brakes to trigger, creating a significant danger of being rear-ended by the car following me. in the latter case, it happens more frequently when there there is a commercial-size truck in the right lane - usually not slowing down or maneuvering in any apparent way.

I was driving to work on dry roads with light traffic due to it being spring break in atlanta. i was driving at 48 mph and suddenly it was as if someone had stomped on the brakes hard. the car slowed very quickly to 30 mph. a car that was following me at similar speed had to swerve to avoid running into the back of me. there was no car in front of me that could have triggered a breaking response and i did not deviate from my lane either. this was a completely random event. 10 minutes later as i got closer to work the lane diversion warning came on, again with me being rocky steady in my lane. i think the sensors may have been reading any whites lines in the road, like a crosswalk or white lane turn arrow.

Lane departure and collision control often engage without cause. twice i have been driving and the lane departure sensors go off and vehicle automatically brakes for no obvious reason. it appears that it may be falsely reading shadows or wet roadways. one incident was on a city street at about 40 mph. the other was on the interstate at around 70 mph.

I was driving to get license renewed when my car lost power and began to coast. the engine was on and i had to gun it to pick up speed. i turned around and headed for the honda dealership. upon getting there all systems were lit up maintenance wise and smoke was coming out of the underside where the brakes are. the service advisor said when she went around the car that it was so hot it would have burned her. service tech said left front brakes extremly heated and smoke coming from the area. found brakes have gotten hot. cleared code present c0040-12. brake switch stuck on. i advised never used hold brake unless i was sitting on steep hill. tech unable to make vehicle do what it was doing to me but, the minute i got it out on the highway, it started doing the same thing. tech advised brake pads ok and rotors have some heat spots in them but ok. they went ahead and changed the oil!!!!

I was driving to honda dealer on march 6, 2019 for my second oil change as a result of me calling the dealership and telling them my oil smelled like it had gas in it again. this is with less than 700 miles since the first oil change that i had done on february 13, 2019. my first oil change was with 4525 miles, this was done as part of a recall on my vehicle. on this march 6th trip i was about 40 miles away from the dealership and my acc (adaptive cruise control) shut down, the collision mitigation system problem and road departure mitigation system problem lights all came up on dash of car and kept scrolling on dash. when my car did this i was unsure, felt unsafe and was frustrated as not knowing what was going on and how many more problems i am going to have with this vehicle. i found a safe place to pull over and called the dealer and told him what was going on, he said the car was safe to drive but those systems that were scrolling on dash weren't operating. it was 6 f outside a clear road and a sunny day in north dakota. after the oil change, i was told the oil was high and that there was again gas in my oil again. at this point i am beyond frustrated and wondering how many more problems i will be having with this new vehicle and the nearest dealership to me is 100 miles away, which causes me time and expense to get to dealership. this also causes me to wonder how reliable this new vehicle can be in north dakota in the winter time as also not getting much heat out of the heating system either, so between the heat, the gas in the oil and electrical problems i am not feeling that this is a safe dependable vehicle to drive, as a person could freeze to death if ended up stranded when the car shuts down and no heat, like it did when i had my appointment for the recall on 2-12-19 and it had to be put on flat bed truck to get recall done.

The collision avoidance system or whatever it is called suddenly slammed on the brakes when i approached a slight left curve in the road at 35 miles per hour (the posted speed limit). the system has activate at least 3 times before at the same place in the rad and same speed, for no apparent reason other than possibly a sign or tree that is close to the edbe of the road. however this time the braking was so severe it could have caused an accident if a car had been closely following me. i pass this place imultiple times every week for over a year, but the braking problem has only occurred 4 or 5 times.

On many occasions my crv auto brakes hard and lane keep follows the wrong lines. 2 examples of braking: 1 - a pickup truck was making a right hand turn in front on me. as a human i started to go around him to the left as he turned but my auto brakes locked up and the person behind me came within inches from rear ending me then got road rage and chased me for something i did not do! could have been killed! 2nd was on a bend in the road - a white moving truck coming the other way on the bend made my auto brakes lock up hard / near a full stop! this happens often but not usually to these extremes. lane keep - while on a major highway with cruise and lk on i went thru a recent construction area and my honda started to follow old lines and painted over w/ black paint lines - not the new lines from after the repairs! it was scary - almost drove me into a barrier! on 1200 mile trip to florida my car often would hit the brakes for reasons i could not tell or go out of the normal road lines or the acc would slow the car to a crawl for trucks in the other lane. took it to the dealer - they say npf. one guy did say to adjust the sensitivity which i did but it still brakes when it should not. my wifes car does not react this way.

While driving back home from work suddenly my crv stopped abruptly and no cat, dog or other object was in the way for this to happen, if a car would of been near in the back it would of crashed my car because of this suddenly stop. i don't feel safe driving it anymore.

Unexpected braking; occurred 2/9/2019m while driving down a straight, level road, with no other cars in front or behind me. sunny day, no wind, no buildings or shadows of any kind, no debris on road -- perfect driving conditions. car braked without warning, from 40mph to ~20mph in a fraction of a second, seat belt held me back, then brakes released. immediately visited dealership (autonation honda 104, 2999 w 104th, westminster, co), reported problem, they did some computer diagnostics, found nothing, tried to blame problem on a blowing leaf.

The automatic brakes deployed suddenly when there was no evidence of danger, twice at highway speeds of about 45 to 50 mph and on two occasions at residential speeds have about 20 to 25 mph.

Brand new all wheel drive 2018 vehicle. it could not stop on snow road near 20mph even lower speed couple times! two times slipped over the traffic lights due to could not stop! scared to death!!!

The collision mitigation braking system was activated when i drove over large metal panels that were placed on a city street in chicago. i have attached documentation. it happened twice in same spot, jan. 8 and jan. 10, both times i was accelerating to get onto the highway ramp, so the impact of the brakes locking up was extra severe. the dealer said he had two other people with same experience, but one going over railroad tracks. the dealer and honda told me the only way to turn off this system is to manually do it every time you start your car. thank god i did not have somebody close behind me when it happened, or i would have been rear ended. the regional case manager did not return my calls for a week, and when he did he said the car was operating properly. i told him in the city of chicago(where i work) i drive over about 15-20 metal panels like that every day, going each way. i am afraid i will forget to turn the system off one of these times, and if i do and i get rear ended, i will hold honda responsible. i was completely dissatified with the letter they sent me,not adressing my complaint at all, the the case manager was very rude on the phone. i asked if my honda dealer could disable this feature, and was told no. there have to be many other consurmers out there that live in cities that have this same problem. there is no way to adjust the sensitivity to large metal objects. the way honda handled my complaint is totally unacceptable to me. **i also have photos of the exact spot that this occurred, if needed, i can upload the photos

While performing a straight, slow speed stop at red light in city traffic, in dry weather with no road debris, the brakes feel spongy, like they are not operating at full power, and is unable to stop the vehicle. pressing harder on the brake petals causes a loud rumbling noise from the braking system that sounds like abs system engaging. the vehicle does come to a full stop, but a low rumbling noise continues while stopped. when driver releases brakes, before pressing the gas pedal, the vehicle lurches forward abruptly and rumbling noise stops. subsequent operation of vehicle returns to normal. this sequence of behavior occurs sporadically. it has occurred three times in the last four months. i took the vehicle to a honda dealership. inspection by a certified mechanic did not uncover any cause for this behavior and no error codes are recorded in the vehicle's computer. mechanic indicated that without a reliable way to reproduce the fault, it is difficult to know what went wrong or how to fix it.

The message brake appears while driving even without any cars in front. it happens irregularly but often enough that it is unsettling and mostly traveling at around 50 m/h. reported twice to honda technician who said it happens with other 18 crv. i have had the car since december and nothing has been done. collision mitigation braking system' (cmbs')*

I really started thinking about an incident from two days ago, when i received a "vague" 2018 honda crv recall notice on my car for an a/c control unit replacement, etc. today. that notice prompted me to begin searching online for anyone documenting "spontaneous braking." i did find several that would say exactly what i would have said in their place. in other words, braking hard enough to an abrupt stop that if someone had been behind me i would have been rear ended. things were thrown from the seats to the floor when i was going quite slowly (on this neighborhood side street).coming up on an area where a large steel sheet had been placed by sewer workers over an opening in the lane i was in. i was so shocked that i lowered my passenger window to call out to two of the workers that, "i didn't do it, the car did." yesterday i went back to that same location to examine exactly how the spot appeared. it definitely looked like the type of road condition that a kid's tricycle is built to easily pass over. i purchased this car on 9/28/2018. in the recall notice, they referred to: what is the product update issue--following that it says--. . .there are reports of vehicles experiencing drivability concerns. these concerns can result in the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) turning on. oh! really! just a "concern"? i'm hoping to find out more about this, and have it fixed, before i, or someone like me, become a statistic. i don't think of an a/c issue as having anything to do with 'drivability.'

At various speeds and different roads my car seems to brake for no reason no cars in front of me and no obstructions of radar or camera. the screen starts flashing brake brake brake and then proceeds to stop the vehicle, even on the middle of the freeway. have been to the dealer multiple times and they claim there's nothing wrong with my car. this is obviously dangerous, and i fear for my own safety

Gasoline present in oil. smell in cabin of car. dip stick smells of gas and is indicating over filled. please find a solution.

The car has several electrical problems with the new safety features. on 3 occasions, the car has "hard braked" by itself for no apparent reason (no cars nearby). also, the car "beeps" intermittently when it shouldn't. this indicates a problem also with safety features. the auto walk-away lock feature does not always work. the settings are for car to auto lock & it does sometimes & sometimes it does not! the mirrors light up warning that there is a car in the lane next to me & not to enter lane, it does this when i'm not changing lanes-defective also.

On two different occasions while driving on the freeway, with no vehicles in the vicinity, my car abruptly applied the brake system. i didn't think to make note of the speed or date when it happened the first time, but i did make note of the second occurrence. during both occurrences, econ mode was turned off. speed was 58 mph as i had merged over to the right to an exit lane. i did check online for any recalls for my vin and/or the make and model of my vehicle. no recalls were on record. i also checked different forums and found a couple complaints within the last month. i just purchased this vehicle from the honda dealership 3 months ago.

I was pulling into a parking space, approximately 5 mph, applying the brakes to stop when the vehicle suddenly accelerated and was only stopped when it hit a concrete barrier.

Car accelerates rapidly, surges forward when i step on the gas. i could not stop in time to avoid collision.

While driving monday, 08/27/18, my car abruptly applied the braking system. i was going about 35 mph in town driving, not the freeway. there was a car in front of me about 4 or so car lengths. there were cars to my right and the rear but none were so close that i was in danger of hitting them nor they hitting me. there was no audible or visual warning on the dash. there may have been some resistance with the steering but unsure at this time. i've looked on-line and noticed this has happened to other drivers and there is no fix. i purchased my car from honda cars of mckinney and went to speak to service dept on 8/30/18, to see what remedy they can suggest. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle.

The brakes failed when in reverse. the reverse sensors do not detect movement, the car does at intersections. a blue vertical line appears when the car is in reverse. the panel freezes...all this happened when the car was in motion.

Collision mitigation braking system activated inappropriately while traveling at 45 mph, on a clear day, straight road with no oncoming traffic. "brake" displayed on dash with no warning alerts at the time the full brake came on. driver and passenger thrown forward, locking seatbelts.
