Problems with 2008 Honda Accord ENGINE

On average, the 2008 Honda Accord starts to “feel” problems with the ENGINE and its various aspects after 94 651 miles.

I own a 2008 honda accord which i purchased brand new in 2008. after i reached about 75,000 miles i started having extreme oil consumption which then lead to me having to replace vtc actuator and piston rings costing me almost $2,000. i have taken my car in multiple times and they tell me there is no issues and honda refuses to do anything. i now can only go about 1,000 miles without having to replenish the oil. as many reports as there are of this known issue and honda refuses to support their customers, speaks loudly.

While driving tensioner bolt broke leave vehicle without power steering or any power except for the battery until that died.it has happened twice in two years and i don't see a recall on this issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle made a rattling sound when cold started. the failure was similar to the failure referenced in honda's service bulletin number: sb09-010. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was contacted. the dealer was not notified. the failure mileage was unknown.

At 90,000 car shook and was misfiring. codes pulled were p301 and 304. spark plugs 1-4 were replaced free of charge due to honda service bulletin 13-078 which extended the warranty to 8 years on engine misfires. my complaint is that the pistons and the piston rings were not inspected at that time. why not? who knows what condition they were in? the car was returned to us with spark plugs as band-aids! it happened again at 103,000 miles (which we paid for) and now at 128,000 the dealership says we need a complete lower engine rebuild to replace pistons 1-3. of course as a 2008, even though low miles, it's outside of warranty. i thought in buying an accord, i could drive it for at least 150,000- at least! i would like the warranty further extended, or at least for american honda corp to pay for half of the repairs as it's only 3,000 miles outside of the original service bulletin extended warranty of 125,000. if honda acknowledged something was wrong with this particular v6 vtec engine, why does the warranty expire? shouldn't there be a grace period or a compromise? we are getting punished for caring for our car and having low miles on it. many folks benefitted from the extended warranty because their cars failed within the 8 year time frame because they had high miles- higher than ours! what about those 08 accords that are still failing outside of the 8 year mark that have lower miles than the ones honda covered under warranty??? c'mon american honda, take care of all your customers! i have purchased 6 hondas in my lifetime and am a loyal customer at my local honda service center with an extensive service history. on this car alone i've purchased new brakes, new starter, new alternator, drive train belts, water pump, new vtec spool valves, vtec solenoid, and every service as recommended by- at the dealership- and my accord only lasted 128,000? how?

When i start the vehicle in the morning after it has set all night it rattles for about 3 seconds. this is a problem that has been on going.

My vehicle's piston rings are damaged and my vehicle is burning oil. i noticed that after checking my oil one day that there was no oil on my dip stick. i had just recently gotten an oil change less than 2 weeks ago. i check my fluid levels frequently due to i just purchased this vehicle about 3 months ago. i took it back to walmart where i had the oil change done at and they performed another oil change and replaced the oil filter, where i was able to watch them do the entire process. about a week and a half goes by and i went to check the fluid level and again the dip stick was bare. there is no indication of any oil leaking underneath the vehicle, nor is there any oil present on the ground underneath the vehicle after sitting overnight. there is no white smoke coming out of anywhere, no oil burning smell, absolutely nothing visible to see what might be going on with the vehicle. i took it to a mechanic that is in town where they did a thorough examination of the vehicle and stated that the oil burning is being caused by the piston rings. they are in their opinion faulty piston rings that have developed an abnormal amount of deb-re on them and they need to be replaced. i feel this is something that should be in the recall list due to this vehicle only has 104,123 miles on it and the pistons should not have to be replaced.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. when the vehicle was cold started, a croaking noise emerged from the engine compartment. the contact stated that the failure occurred every morning for approximately four months. there were no warning indicators illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 honda accord. the contact stated that the oil indicator illuminated and there was oil leaking underneath the vehicle. the oil leak became more constant. the vehicle was taken to toyota south austin where it was diagnosed that an oil change was needed. the oil change was performed, but the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where another oil change was performed and a new air filter was installed. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 104,700. consumer stated the actual owner of this vehicle is my fiance i submitted the complaint on his behalf. In 2008, i purchase a new honda accord v6 paid with financing $25,000. i purchase a brand new vehicle to not have to be bothered with someone else problems. when my car reached 100 thousand miles in the winter, i heard a loud knocking sound under the hood and i was loosing a lot of oil. i took my car to the dealer. my engine light was on and start blinking. the dealer pulled the dtc and the p0301 cold was present. a service bulletin 13-078 and case # 312-cv-01377-s1 told me that would be no cost to me because i was a class member. this was from a class action filing that 1.5 million honda were defective because of a manufacturer defect. i was told this would fix my $25,000 investment honda i purchase and paid in full. since then i went to the community honda dealership in orland park illinois and on april 2019 the p0301 code was present again something new and the p0420 dtc. i paid again for tune up which the 1st cylinder was fouled out again the third time this year. the director of the service department name bob stated for this repair again would cost me $8,000 and smiled. i said i could not afford that repair and because now that the first repair which i was lead to believe was going to fix the effect and did not. i was sold a lemon and i need honda to repurchase this vehicle and give me a brand new vehicle similar to the one i purchase for $25,000. the community honda service director would not warranty my tune up because he said i need piston rings again. i then contacted honda corporation and informed them of my issue with the vehicle i purchase with was a defect. took two weeks for the regional director per dana honda rep stated no more assistance will be given to this defective vehicle which is a manufacturer defect that i would not have purchase if i had known. i then had to go to pep boys to avoid blowing the engine and catching a fire for repa

Every time are start my vehicle it makes a grinding rattling noise, this issue has been going on for some time now and the noise it makes seems to be lasting longer every time we start it. the vehicle is not moving, it is in park, it only occurs when i start it up.

I purchased my vehicle one year ago (december 2018) and have had a grinding noise upon starting the vehicle. this grinding noise occurs during or weather and cold weather. i went to a honda dealership where they ran an oil consumption test and came to the conclusion that the vtc actuator wasn't working properly and there was a high oil consumption. honda is saying there was never a recall but this is and has been a well known occurring issue with honda's from years 2008-2012) and i have not been able to fix as the price to fix the vehicle would cost just as much as the price i purchased it for. i'm highly disappointed with a honda as i've heard excellent things about honda cars which is why i purchased my accord. if i had known of the issue i wouldn't have purchased it and i'd rather purchase a different car than to have to come out of pocket. i don't feel i have been treated properly throughout this process and i gabe honda the chance to make things right but no one is willing to cooperate. i will not be purchasing a new vehicle. i even thought to trade my vehicle in for a 2018 honda accord but if i feel i've been treated poorly why would i want to continue giving a company my business if i've been treated poorly? also my dad was considering purchasing a brand new 2021 honda civic but now i will lead him to a different brand vehicle as honda has not lived up to its name. and now to top everything off, my motor is going all due to the negligence of the honda dealer. if they would have fixed the vtc actuator problem my motor wouldn't be consuming so much oil and my motor would not have blown. i think it's a little outrageous that honda thinks it's normal for me to have to pay for an oil change at least once a month if not sooner when it was a known problem with thousands of honda's.

Check engine lit. engine room 1500--2000. computer indicate transmission sensor. i replaced it but doesn't help. removed minus battery. check engine disappears after 40 miles check engine appear again.

The vehicle has good compression, but a strange noise is coming from the engine. it is also losing oil while leaving no oil markings. the vehicle has never missed an oil change, and was getting one when the mechanics said that the noise meant that the engine had problems. multiple mechanics have told us to replace the v6 engine. the tire rods also need to be replaced, and the tsm light never goes off

My car is pulling codes 339, 303, and 302. misfiring and from time to time the check engine light flashes and won't go above 30mph. click link below for the information about a recall for all 2008 honda accord engines. http://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/honda-service-bulletin-09-050/

The check engine light kept coming up with the maintenance light and the oil level kept dropping.i took it to autozone and i got these coded p3497 and p3400. i did a research myself and found out that there was a recall on this issue as stated in honda's bulletin 11-033.the recall covers all accord from 2008-2010 which mine is included. i called accord to notify them about these but after they looked up the vin,i was told my car wasn't included. honda's bulletin says all 2008-2010 v6 accord so why is my car exempted? please kindly look into these issue. thank you.

Have to top off engine oil every week. discovered problem last year when oil was almost drained out and fear it will destroy the engine if not addressed.

Vtc (variable timing control) actuator, horrible grinding noise at start up and i do know that honda is aware of this and has had many many complaints. that has got to be a 'lemon law' issue and i believe it needs to be fixed promptly. on a cold start, is when it makes the terrible noise. if it's driven for a while and then started up again, it is a 50/50 chance that it will make the noise again.

My car makes this rattling sound when i first start the car. i brought it into my honda dealership to have it looked and they said it is a known issue related to other honda accords but honda won't cover the cost to have it repaired. they gave me an estimate of $480 to have fixed. i've searched online and found that many honda accord owners have also faced this issue with the rattling sound. if it is a known defect and saftey issue, why hasn't honda issued a recall to fix it?

Since last 5 years i noticed loud grinding noise at startup, only in the morning when i first start the engine. noise does not happen on startups during the day and the engine runs fine. just the annoying about 2 second long scratch noise at first start in the morning. but since last 2-3 weeks it has gone worst and get that noice even when i start driving and every time i slow down and start speed up again it get that noice like gear slipping or grinding noise until i reach to faster speed like above 30-35. its happening every time now. on honda's website it defines problem as "engine rattles at cold start-up" just difference for me is now its happening all the time when i am driving. and i was waiting for hope to get recall notification since it's happening to all 2008 honda accord customers. here is the link of honda website which has more information . https://honda.oemdtc.com/219/engine-rattles-at-cold-start-up-2008-2013-honda which even says the 2008-2012 all honda accord models has this problem. so before i schedule an appointment to dealership i thought to take this step to mention about common problem of particular 2008 honda accord to nhtsa united states department of transportation hoping i will get some kind of help or solution.

I have had to replace the vtc actuator twice in the last 5 yrs and now need to replace it again. at cold start the car makes a rattling noise. honda has a bulletin but say nothing about helping owners replace them since it is a known issue. please help!!!

At cold start-up, the engine rattles loudly for about 2 seconds. have been told is a defective vtc actuator.

Takata recall- transmission will mot go into reverse after alternator failure

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the engine. the dealer (cape girardeau honda, 385 siemers dr, cape girardeau, mo 63701, (573) 334-6919) was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed. the manufacturer was notified. the approximate failure mileage was 180,000.

The car is excessively burning oil. i have to add a quart of oil at least once a month. before that i was getting oil changes frequently because the car was saying the oil was low.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. while attempting to start the vehicle, the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated, including the check engine indicator. while driving, the speed would not increase past 20 mph. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. the local dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failures. the failure mileage was 120,000.

Engine oil consumption issue. the engine oil is burning way too fast and the engine makes a grinding noise. i took it to the dealer for several years and now that it is out of warranty they are saying its a oil consumption issue.

'takata recall' i had gotten into an collision involving a deer on 10/26/2016. i was going approximately 60 mph when i struck this roughly 110 pound deer. the impact was on my front bumper on the passenger side of my car. when i took it to get repaired i had no other choice but to go with my insurance's geico express facility since all the shops were full from hail damage vehicles. in the estimate and on the repair order i received from geico and amm collision. my vehicle never had the work done to the structure untill 2 months ago. it stated that there were 3 structural components that were worked on. the right rail assembly 4 hours or repair time 60810ta5a00zz (where front and rear panels connect, heavy buckle), the left inner panel 3.6 hours repair time 04695ta0a00zz(rolled with putter panel, includes time for brackets at the top of frame), and the right front panel (crushed, cost effective to replace)60659ta5a50zz. my vehicle was in the shop for only 2 business days but some how put 41 hours worth of labor into my car. i had gotten into another hit and run on 9/20/17 where my side airbags didn't deploy. i took it back to amm collision where geico tried to total out my vehicle, falsify paperwork by taking off componants(transmission), undervalue then retain my vehicle. when i dropped my vehicle off back with amm collision i had taken pictures of patches of rust on structure componants and broken tack welds. still today i have broken welds in my car. but the major concern was geico and amm collision trying to hide the fact that they didn't do the repairs to my frame for a whole year. and when i requested the photos of the repairs and measurements from the body alignment machine from the shop, i had the police called on me and i have a felony criminal trespassing warning at amm collision for asking for paperwork that they cannot provide.

I had my car for a year since 8/13/2016 now my car is knocking ticking and when i accelerate it's loud in the morning i got all my oil changes transmission flush and engine flush i need help what's going on i went to get a diagnostics test yesterday (8/25/17) now my engine light is blinking on my dashboard plus the tpms light and also vsa indicator with the triangle with the exclamation mark in it i turned the car on this morning drove it to the store it cut off on me help it only let me go up to 25 mph

2008 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to engine trouble. *ld the consumer stated the actuator was the cause of the engine failure. the dealership and manufacturer failed to properly notify the consumer or remedy the failure. *js

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. while driving at unknown speeds, there was an abnormal knocking noise. additionally, the vehicle burned oil excessively. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (dublin honda located at 6300 dublin blvd ca 94588) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was irreparable. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was informed and offered no assistance. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 180,000.

2008 honda accord ex-l v6. engine failure. heading home and car cut off. pulled over and called my mechanic for a tow to his shop. his diagnosis was engine failure and he stated a new engine is the only fix. my mechanic runs a small shop in a small town and he tells it like it is. he recommended selling the car for scrap rather than investing in the new engine. i was upset. this is a nice car and is quite clean. but during my five years of ownership i have added oil every week to keep it topped off. spark plugs fouled often enough to carry extras in the trunk along with a ratchet and socket. when they fouled i would pull over, change them and go on my way. i still own the car. but it is has too many miles and is too old for inclusion into the class action settlement. this isn't right and it's the first and last honda i will ever own.

The vtc actuator needed to be replaced. the mechanic explained that it was not merely defective, but was a design defect, for which there had been recalls for other/later models years. i confirmed this with a google search. i was told that, were the part not replaced, the damage could be catastrophic. cost - over $600. i complained to honda of america, and sought reimbursement. they denied it, saying it was out of warranty. car has about 88,000 miles and warranty was for 5 years and 30,000 miles. however, honda of america representative said he would sue honda if it were him. i should receive reimbursement, and there should be recall on this part.

Defective vtc actuaftor. honda & dealer knew by 2011 that the part was defective and defectively designed, and should have recalled it. now, in spite of being "out of warranty," they should replace or reimburse. i did replace and am seeking reimbursement, so far denied.

From reading online, it appears i'm one of many who have a vtc actuator issue. honda service people never know what i'm talking about even though it's in a bulletin 09-010 from honda. engine has loud cough sound upon starting the car, after being off for 6 hours or so. this should be part of a recall & customers shouldn't be charged for this but that's obviously what they want to do to us.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. while driving on the interstate, the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 90,000. updated 06/07/17/*lj *cn

3.5 v-6 engine rattling loudly

Car sporadically dying (electrically and all) while in drive or in motion of forward driving (while going 30 + mph) and then just as sporadically turning itself back on. makes chain dragging sound similar to worn brake pads but the sound will change pitches while driving between 0-43mph. after 43 mph it no longer makes odd sounds but as soon as deceleration begins it is at risk to either temporarily "die' or slightly jerk and almost "die". this has happened while driving up to 20 times within 3 miles and the first time it "died" was while pulling into a parking spot and fully stopping. it has not done it for the last couple days and local mechanic could not diagnose it as the battery was in great condition and everything appeared to be plugged where it should be.

Engine is burning oil, american honda states i am not in tsb #11-033, but they just told me my passenger air bag is involved in the takata recall, transmission 1-2 shift doesn't feel right

Engine seized....mechanic found no oil in engine....oil life still showed 40%....no other warnings regarding low oil.

I have a 2008 honda accord ex-l which i bought new with 153000 miles. it started using oil several months ago. after my last oil change i checked the oil at about 1000 miles and it was over 2 quarts low which i replaced and checked it again after about 600 miles and found it to be over a quart low. i have the oil & filter changed ever 5000 miles and this should not be happening.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. while driving 65 mph, the engine began to rev excessively and the vehicle jerked. the vehicle was towed to the contact's home. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cam shaft position sensor failed due to the timing chain being defective and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 119,000.

High oil consumption and engine cold making noise. honda repaired this issue 2 times in the past under warranty, issue a extended warranty that expires and the issued has happended a third time.honda knows the issue is happening to the cars and all honda does it fix it until the car is out of warranty

Car lost power and nearly stalled when sitting at a railroad crossing intersection. this was later confirmed to be a oil leak into the pistons that caused the engine to misfire. car would not run smoothly and nearly stall when driving up to 50mph.

My car makes a loud rattling noise during cold start.

Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact noticed a pool of oil under the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that there was an oil leak and a socket needed to be installed. the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. the vehicle was returned to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine would need to be removed to repair the oil leak. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

Vtc actuator car makes rattling noise at start-up and at other times.

While driving, oil light flickered, upon investigation noticed car had lost 3 quarts of oil . i had noticed a momentary rattle upon start up of engine that went away quickly. honda stated they needed to replace the vtc actuator(o rings, head gasket, timing chain, cylinder repair) before they could do an oil consumption test. upon research which indicates the actuator is an issue and they refuse to take responsibility . honda did not want to service it under a recall notice.

Check engine light intermittently on and off from 02/2016 (codes p1009 camshaft position and p0341 camshaft position a circuit each time). car stalled a number of times when running stationary and in motion in august 2016. honda dealer on august 9 found camshaft timing chain stretched and in need of replacement. car had 41,059 miles on odometer and power train warranty of 60,000 miles or 5 years. repair cost $1,562.90. honda refused any compensation even though mileage well under 60,000 miles and the vehicle was in excellent working order including engine oil level. repair should have been covered as an exception under warranty. consumer reports magazine shows frequency of repair very poor for major engine problems for 2008 honda accord(obviously unknown at time of purchase 12/2007). major engine problems not cited for honda accords from 2005 through 2015 in consumer reports magazine.

This is a safety raised issue on a 2008 accord-lxp that i purchased used (which had about 29k originally when i purchased it as a certified honda accord) from herb chambers boston. since i purchased the car, i started hearing an odd grinding noise when starting the car on cold days - honda said just keep oil full. i then find out that a recall had been issued to fix the oil consumption, that honda had finally agreed there was an issue with the engine design and would fix it and at the same time would not cause other issues to emerge such as vtc and the timing chain issues. recently my engine light came on, i started researching the problem. it was the first time i knew about the following issues which i will be detailing/describing below. results were bad: a timing chain failure. my car has stopped in the middle of road causing a very dangerous situation which could led to me losing my life. not, only that, when i tried to just drive the car a mile back to my house it was accelerating and decelerating by it self. in addition, i decided to take it to the dealership for a diagnoses, i almost ended up in couple accidents. the car was uncontrollable and won't stop and the brakes won't respond due to issues caused by oil consumption, to vtc actuator to a timing chain failure: the car keep accelerating and decelerating by it self on the road or highway. note: ideally the timing chain should not fail on 58k miles. simplified sequence of problems: oil consumption issue vtc (valve timing control) actuator timing chain (either loose or broken) safety issue

I purchased this honda accord from automaxx of summerville in good faith from dealer stating that vehicle passed all their inspections (including brake system). i found out within 2 weeks later by taking it to a honda dealership, that the brakes, brake lines, caliper, exhaust system are all affected by severe, damaging rust. during inspection, inclusive were sticking caliper. i had front brakes replaced; but due to rust, technician had to bam & force brakes lose. i was informed of the risks with severe rusting causing parts to brake and fail. new brakes would not install properly after old, seated brakes came off. when vehicle is in motion and stopping, the brake system makes noise, and seems like something coming apart due to the insecure fitting of brakes/rotors/calipers, which all have a great build up of rust. this vehicle was purchased approximately 1 month ago in these conditions. it should be illegal to sell such vehicles that pose safety risk in brake system. honda inspection suggested that rust was so severe that car could have possibly been damaged by salt water/snow/ice or flood. car originated from up north. re-sale should not be allowed.
