We have classified the 48 complaints from 2008 Honda Accord about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
I started my car up in the morning and warmed it up for about 15 minutes then as i go to put it in reverse the battery light came on i then put my car in park and turned it off then i turned it back on and the battery light was still on i decided to just go because i have to be at work in an hour as i am driving down i five the radio stopped working like the side of the vehicle started flickering and my headlights turned off and i was now driving down i-5 in the dark. fortunately i made it to my location parked my car and it completely died. i didn't open my hood and started checking my battery and my alternator etc. i confirmed my battery was fine and that my alternator had failed. i then notice fluid was leaking from the power steering pump to the alternator. now my car is has no power and even if i get it jumpstarted it just dies.
At 90,000 car shook and was misfiring. codes pulled were p301 and 304. spark plugs 1-4 were replaced free of charge due to honda service bulletin 13-078 which extended the warranty to 8 years on engine misfires. my complaint is that the pistons and the piston rings were not inspected at that time. why not? who knows what condition they were in? the car was returned to us with spark plugs as band-aids! it happened again at 103,000 miles (which we paid for) and now at 128,000 the dealership says we need a complete lower engine rebuild to replace pistons 1-3. of course as a 2008, even though low miles, it's outside of warranty. i thought in buying an accord, i could drive it for at least 150,000- at least! i would like the warranty further extended, or at least for american honda corp to pay for half of the repairs as it's only 3,000 miles outside of the original service bulletin extended warranty of 125,000. if honda acknowledged something was wrong with this particular v6 vtec engine, why does the warranty expire? shouldn't there be a grace period or a compromise? we are getting punished for caring for our car and having low miles on it. many folks benefitted from the extended warranty because their cars failed within the 8 year time frame because they had high miles- higher than ours! what about those 08 accords that are still failing outside of the 8 year mark that have lower miles than the ones honda covered under warranty??? c'mon american honda, take care of all your customers! i have purchased 6 hondas in my lifetime and am a loyal customer at my local honda service center with an extensive service history. on this car alone i've purchased new brakes, new starter, new alternator, drive train belts, water pump, new vtec spool valves, vtec solenoid, and every service as recommended by- at the dealership- and my accord only lasted 128,000? how?
In 2008, i purchase a new honda accord v6 paid with financing $25,000. i purchase a brand new vehicle to not have to be bothered with someone else problems. when my car reached 100 thousand miles in the winter, i heard a loud knocking sound under the hood and i was loosing a lot of oil. i took my car to the dealer. my engine light was on and start blinking. the dealer pulled the dtc and the p0301 cold was present. a service bulletin 13-078 and case # 312-cv-01377-s1 told me that would be no cost to me because i was a class member. this was from a class action filing that 1.5 million honda were defective because of a manufacturer defect. i was told this would fix my $25,000 investment honda i purchase and paid in full. since then i went to the community honda dealership in orland park illinois and on april 2019 the p0301 code was present again something new and the p0420 dtc. i paid again for tune up which the 1st cylinder was fouled out again the third time this year. the director of the service department name bob stated for this repair again would cost me $8,000 and smiled. i said i could not afford that repair and because now that the first repair which i was lead to believe was going to fix the effect and did not. i was sold a lemon and i need honda to repurchase this vehicle and give me a brand new vehicle similar to the one i purchase for $25,000. the community honda service director would not warranty my tune up because he said i need piston rings again. i then contacted honda corporation and informed them of my issue with the vehicle i purchase with was a defect. took two weeks for the regional director per dana honda rep stated no more assistance will be given to this defective vehicle which is a manufacturer defect that i would not have purchase if i had known. i then had to go to pep boys to avoid blowing the engine and catching a fire for repa
Check engine lit. engine room 1500--2000. computer indicate transmission sensor. i replaced it but doesn't help. removed minus battery. check engine disappears after 40 miles check engine appear again.
Grinding noise presents when cold start the car, possiblely the vtc actuator failure
Since last 5 years i noticed loud grinding noise at startup, only in the morning when i first start the engine. noise does not happen on startups during the day and the engine runs fine. just the annoying about 2 second long scratch noise at first start in the morning. but since last 2-3 weeks it has gone worst and get that noice even when i start driving and every time i slow down and start speed up again it get that noice like gear slipping or grinding noise until i reach to faster speed like above 30-35. its happening every time now. on honda's website it defines problem as "engine rattles at cold start-up" just difference for me is now its happening all the time when i am driving. and i was waiting for hope to get recall notification since it's happening to all 2008 honda accord customers. here is the link of honda website which has more information . https://honda.oemdtc.com/219/engine-rattles-at-cold-start-up-2008-2013-honda which even says the 2008-2012 all honda accord models has this problem. so before i schedule an appointment to dealership i thought to take this step to mention about common problem of particular 2008 honda accord to nhtsa united states department of transportation hoping i will get some kind of help or solution.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. while driving at unknown speeds, there was an abnormal knocking noise. additionally, the vehicle burned oil excessively. the vehicle was taken to a local dealer (dublin honda located at 6300 dublin blvd ca 94588) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was irreparable. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was informed and offered no assistance. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 180,000.
The vtc actuator needed to be replaced. the mechanic explained that it was not merely defective, but was a design defect, for which there had been recalls for other/later models years. i confirmed this with a google search. i was told that, were the part not replaced, the damage could be catastrophic. cost - over $600. i complained to honda of america, and sought reimbursement. they denied it, saying it was out of warranty. car has about 88,000 miles and warranty was for 5 years and 30,000 miles. however, honda of america representative said he would sue honda if it were him. i should receive reimbursement, and there should be recall on this part.
Defective vtc actuaftor. honda & dealer knew by 2011 that the part was defective and defectively designed, and should have recalled it. now, in spite of being "out of warranty," they should replace or reimburse. i did replace and am seeking reimbursement, so far denied.
Engine is burning oil, american honda states i am not in tsb #11-033, but they just told me my passenger air bag is involved in the takata recall, transmission 1-2 shift doesn't feel right

This is a safety raised issue on a 2008 accord-lxp that i purchased used (which had about 29k originally when i purchased it as a certified honda accord) from herb chambers boston. since i purchased the car, i started hearing an odd grinding noise when starting the car on cold days - honda said just keep oil full. i then find out that a recall had been issued to fix the oil consumption, that honda had finally agreed there was an issue with the engine design and would fix it and at the same time would not cause other issues to emerge such as vtc and the timing chain issues. recently my engine light came on, i started researching the problem. it was the first time i knew about the following issues which i will be detailing/describing below. results were bad: a timing chain failure. my car has stopped in the middle of road causing a very dangerous situation which could led to me losing my life. not, only that, when i tried to just drive the car a mile back to my house it was accelerating and decelerating by it self. in addition, i decided to take it to the dealership for a diagnoses, i almost ended up in couple accidents. the car was uncontrollable and won't stop and the brakes won't respond due to issues caused by oil consumption, to vtc actuator to a timing chain failure: the car keep accelerating and decelerating by it self on the road or highway. note: ideally the timing chain should not fail on 58k miles. simplified sequence of problems: oil consumption issue vtc (valve timing control) actuator timing chain (either loose or broken) safety issue
I purchased this honda accord from automaxx of summerville in good faith from dealer stating that vehicle passed all their inspections (including brake system). i found out within 2 weeks later by taking it to a honda dealership, that the brakes, brake lines, caliper, exhaust system are all affected by severe, damaging rust. during inspection, inclusive were sticking caliper. i had front brakes replaced; but due to rust, technician had to bam & force brakes lose. i was informed of the risks with severe rusting causing parts to brake and fail. new brakes would not install properly after old, seated brakes came off. when vehicle is in motion and stopping, the brake system makes noise, and seems like something coming apart due to the insecure fitting of brakes/rotors/calipers, which all have a great build up of rust. this vehicle was purchased approximately 1 month ago in these conditions. it should be illegal to sell such vehicles that pose safety risk in brake system. honda inspection suggested that rust was so severe that car could have possibly been damaged by salt water/snow/ice or flood. car originated from up north. re-sale should not be allowed.
The timing chain broke while driving at approximately 52 mph. this resulted in the destruction of the engine at 119000 miles on a car that has had all recommended services procedures performed. this vehicle has a timing chain not a belt.
Vsa brakeand abs light comes on after engine has warmed up. honda dealor has dtc 122-01 vsa selenoid valve malfunction cost for this defect in the vsa light per written estimate is $1639.00. this is a safety highway hazard. contacted honda corporation customer service case# 04375940 and know one has know knowledge of the safety concern and fail to fixed and pay for this saftey highway safety need. refuses to have a supervisor contact me to discuss the class action powertrain covered til 6-2016 service bulletin 13-078. my car will not increase in speed stalls at 55 mph on high speed and speed limit on highway is 70 mph and can received a ticket for driving under speed limited that can cause a accident on the highways.

The engine of my honda accord 2008 started to having the rattle and scratching sound when it reached 32000 miles. the engine also started to fail as the rattle sound gets serious. i called honda usa multiple times, but they said that they will not cover this issue because the car was made in 2008 and i'm filing this complaint in 2016. i think honda usa is trying to avoid this defect of accord 2008, since numerous people have had the same issue.
2008 honda accord. consumer writes in regards to vehicle repair services at dealership and transmission replacement issues. *smd the consumer stated she took the vehicle to the dealer for a 55,000 mile point inspection. however, the dealer performed other work she did not request. the dealer informed the consumer, the vehicle needed a new transmission. after the transmission was installed, the vehicle performed even worse. the vehicle shook in a violent manner. *jb
2008 honda accord ex-l model i-4 engine (2.4l) started excessively burn oil in engine after 2,000 mile with new engine oil changed. after new engine oil changed, even the indicator of oil viscosity indicate 60% remain (honda has the system), when oil checked, oil volume shows under minimum oil level. it make me very worry about engine oil consumption so quickly as unusual to compare other cars in my experience. when i went to check any evidence of oil leaking at 2-different local oil shop, we couldn't find any oil leaking evidence. this is 2nd time that happened. this is unacceptable to the customer. one of my college has 2008 honda accord coupe (2.4l), he has same problem. he is change engine oil every 2,000 mile due to burning engine oil issue (no clue of leaking) i checked this issue via web site and find that the article " american honda settles class-action suit over oil-burning claim for honda v6 engine only" on automotive news (oct.22.2013) but unfortunately, the article says that accord vehicles with four cylinder engines are excluded from the settlement" i am wonder why honda accord 2.4l engine got this exclusion from engine oil burning so quickly. please investigate this issue on honda accord 2.4l engine asap. update 9/15/15*cw . updated 11/28/2017*cn
On 12/22/2014, my 2008 honda accord lx (which has 98,300 miles on it) was towed into my local honda dealer. the reason for my having it towed into my local dealer was due to the fact that my engine failed while driving on a residential street drive two miles from my home. there was absolutely no indication whatsoever that my engine would fail as the check engine light did not go on, there was no oil light illuminated, etc. thus i was shocked when i was driving and tried to give the car some gas and the car did not accelerate ' thus i rolled to the side of the road and contacted a towing company. the service representative contacted me via phone and let me know that there was no compression in cylinder 2 and that i likely needed a new engine. the initial estimate would be $6,000 for a car with a blue book value of $6,500 (dealer trade in.) i have all service records and faithfully serviced my vehicle at the honda dealership. the service rep also explained that i was low on oil and i reviewed my receipts to determine that i changed my oil 2600 miles earlier. i am hoping that honda will provide goodwill to repair the vehicle as a 6 year old vehicle with 98000 miles on it should not need a new engine. *tr updated 3/10/16*js
I purchased this vehicle in february 2015 and the issues which i have face are: poor(worn) struts, axle(output shaft) seal leak, vtc actuator which the dealer does not want to honor the warranty defect, and poor motor mounts. in addition, the struts caused one of the tires to pop due to a bump on the tire, and the passenger front tire had to be replaced because of the bump on the tire which again is due to the struts being bad.
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would make a loud noise intermittently when shifting gears. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. the technician diagnosed that a bearing or a race was defective. the vehicle had not been repaired. the contact was made aware of recall nhtsa campaign id number 11v39500 (power, train). however, the vin was not included on the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 56,000.
Replaced vtc actuator once and needs to be replaced again. need a new redesigned vtc actuator to be manufactured.
I purchased this car last year and it had over 150000, as i checked the oil i noticed it was low i have added 1 qt in between every oil change. my second problem was during the winter on the real cold days the starter sounded like it was hanging up as described as the vtc actuator. my third problem is the warning light on the dash for the air bag has illuminated. i contacted honda today and they told me the light only comes on after it has been to the body shop? also i have received a claim form for a reimbursable deployment prior to feb 13 2014. i have not been in a accident and neither has the car. so if there is a claim for the air bag deployment why isn't there a recall for the air bag? *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle; however, it would not shift into gear. the vehicle was towed to the dealer but they have not diagnosed the failure. nhtsa recall campaign number 11v395000(power train ) was related to the failure; however, dealer stated that the defect was not related to the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 79,300.
8/11:certified pre-owned purchased from honda dealer at 35787 mi oil changes: 3/15/2012: 41659mi; 9/6/2012: 48687mi 7/1/13: 54340mi-oil pressure warning light and rattling noise appears;vehicle immediately taken to suburban honda dealer (farmington hills, mi);no diagnostic codes given. only explanation was the oil level was too low and the noise disappeared when oil was filled. no explanation for suspected leak/excessive consumption despite last oil change being just 6000mi back 3/18/14:oil pressure warning light flashes once and car was not started until i made an appointment with suburban honda on 3/20/2013 3/20/14: 62450 mi- within 0.25mi of my way to dealer, the oil pressure light flashes in the middle of a signal intersection and engine fails amidst heavy traffic thereby, compromising my safety. on 1st notice(7/13), dealer completely neglected my concerns for oil leak/malfunction which led to massive engine damage (estimate $8000). negligence led to engine failure on road causing massive compromise to my safety. death could have been imminent if my car stalled on a freeway. honda has a design flaw resulting in excessive oil consumption noted by multiple customers.dealer did not recommend an oil consumption test despite oil levels reaching critical levels within 6000mi of previous oil change.i was informed accord consumes 1 quart of oil/ 1000mi and since my mileage was beyond honda limits, i'm to be held responsible. dealer mentioned that 'apology' is what they can offer and that 'no cost will be on dealer since it is not their responsibility'. official rep of american honda stated that this is purely a maintenance issue and that they do not possess ownership of dealer and have nothing to say reg irresponsibility of the official honda dealer. honda's design flaw&irresponsible dealers neglecting this issue could result in severe bodily injury or death. *tr
I have the 2008 honda accord with the 4cyl engine and drive approximately 8 miles per day. within the last few months i have noticed significant oil loss in between oil changes. approximately 3-4 quarts needs to be added in between oil changes. there is not a leak to be found and i am not blowing smoke out of the tailpipe. upon additional research, i've found that multiple other owners of the exact same make and model vehicle are having this same issue. i've taken the vehicle to a local shop to have it looked at, but still don't have a resolve. honda just recently lost a class action suit regarding the v6 models, but still won't admit to the issue with the 4cyl model. i have had estimates anywhere from $500 on up to a complete engine overhaul, which is far more than i can afford. honda needs to take responsibility for this and fix the problem. i've owned many other honda's and this is the first i've ever seen do something like this. please help! thank you *tr
When i start my car (usually when it is off for 4~6 hours) it will make a screech noise. but if it has been off for less than that, then the car does not make the noise. i've taken the vehicle in today at the dealership and they said that the cause was the vtc actuator. the dealership is asking for an $800 charge to fix this. my car is now out of warranty. as of right now i understand that there is no recall from honda for this. i have done a google search on 2008 honda accord vtc actuator recall and have found that a lot of other people has the same issue as i do. *tr
For the 2nd time since 2008, i've had to replace the sparkplugs due to pcm issues. the engine light will come on and gives an error code of p0303. unfortunately you can only go to honda to have the computer updated, and they will try to sell additional services. today they refused to update my computer stating the only way to fix was to replace all the sparkplugs despite the service bulletin stating otherwise. despite this being a manufacturer issue honda has forced car owners to pay for this repair with no true fix existing. *tr
The vtc ( variable timing control ) actuator on our 2008 honda accord sedan 4 door model was found to be defective and required immediate replacement by the honda dealership. the 4 cylinder engine is exhibiting high oil consumption and poor gas mileage. odometer reading is approximately 40,000 miles. *tr
Intermittent sudden uncontrolled acceleration. when merging into highway traffic or passing, vehicle continuously accelerates even when no braking; revs go up to 5000 and stays there even when stomping on brakes in attempt to slow the vehicle down. only way to stop the sudden acceleration is to put car in neutral. due to intermittent nature of problem, dealer could not fix during warranty period. scheduled dealer appointment twice in 2011 and 2013, both times problem could not be duplicated. *tr
When driving the vehicle (2008 accord) in morning, i noticed a small rattle on inclines. later there was a rattle when starting the car that has gotten progressively worse. i am hearing it constantly now and very loud. *tr
My vehicle was in park. when i tried to put it in drive, it would not move. i inserted a key beside the gear shift to release the gear shift. my vsa light, along with the ! warning light came on. when i looked in my car manual, it instructed me to take it to the honda dealership immediately. i took it to the honda dealership and they called american honda but could not figure out what was wrong with the car. the gear shift now locks at least once a day and is getting harder to release. it also makes a clicking noise. i went back to the honda dealership and waited 3 1/2 hours for them correct the problem. they again called american honda and their only recommendation is for me to pay $1200.00 to buy a new part. the honda dealership charged me $200.00 for their time. i was sent away with no repair to my car. i called american honda and explained that i am worried about my safety. the vsa light along with the ! warning light says in the manual "vsa systemmalfunction. vehicle has normal driving ability, but does not have vsa traction and stability enhancement; see dealer as soon as possible". i have went through 3 sets of tires this year and i think it is because of this issue. honda has already recalled the vsa in the 2005 honda pilot. in their recall statement, "during a vsa system malfunction, the amount of brake force applied could exceed the driver's intended input. unexpected brake activation could increase the risk of a crash." i am very disappointed that honda is not concerned about my personal safety even though they know their is an issue with their vsa system. i am very concerned about my safety and the safety of the passengers that ride in my car. *tr
The car did not want to move after it was put in gear. when the car did move it was very hesitant and would not pick up speed at first, then would gradually pick up speed. the car is back at the dealership and first they said it was transmission sensor, then said it was the computer, after replacing that the car begin a rough idle. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact stated that that vehicle was included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 11v395000 (power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)). the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that they would not repair the vehicle because it was not in warranty. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. the failure mileage was 123,000.
i hear a grinding noise when i start my car.when i accelerate i hear noise too.its not only me complain about this. almost everybody that have this kind of car.
2008 honda accord. consumer states the vehicle was parked, no keys in the ignition, and gear shift in park, when it rolled into another vehicle *tgw the consumer stated one month prior, the vehicle had been serviced for recall 11v395000. after the incident, the consumer contacted the dealer who performed the recall and they suggested she file a claim with her insurance company.
When starting honda for the first time during the day or after it has sit for a while, it makes a noise or rough start up. i have done some research and found out what the issues is, it is vtc actuator. i have read numerous complaints about this issue. if i had known at the time that this was going to be an issue i would not have purchased this vehicle. but the sales man knew when to start the car away from us, didn't find out till the day after the purchase. we bought it used. the part is a bit pricey and honda should be responsible for this charge, since it is not the first car that has had this issue. it seems to be a bad year for the accord. i would like this to be fixed. *tr
We purchased a new 2008 honda accord exl in 2008. it has only 40,000 miles on it and my husband was driving and went to pass and the engine missed and and began to shudder and misfire and almost had a head on because he could not accelerate and had to find a way to get back into line. we took it in and the only thing to fix it was replace the spark plug which we did and car was fine for a few weeks but now it is doing it again. i feel it's a safety issue if in the middle of driving you cannot accelerate the vehicle. *kb
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda accord. the contact stated that the transmission began slipping. when traveling on city streets, the vehicle would jerk abnormally but not when driving on the highway. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the transmission would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 117,000.
Above start date and mileage are estimates as this seems to have always been an issue. the engine sputters when accelerating through the first few gears. this is noticeable around the 20-35 mile per hour range, but may occur before or after that speed. it seems dangerous if acceleration is needed when the car will not respond. i have looked up honda service bulletins and it seems there a re a few that "might" fit the issue. one is related to an oil "leak" another to oil "consumption" as well as one related to engine "low power". i believe the oil issue exists regardless as i am checking it now and discovered it is always low. there are a couple of others that may or may not apply as it is hard to determine the exact problem and service bulletin. the vehicle has been to the dealer for this issue only for the dealer to not be able to determine the cause or identify the problem while at the shop. early on while under warranty the vehicle was brought back to the dealer for this issue and some spark plugs were replaced. if i remember correctly they said there was a problem with the spark plugs. the issue has always remained even after the replacement of some spark plugs. they may not have replaced all of them and thus the issue at hand? i will have to ask the dealer for a service history if they have it since i may not have all the records. the car will go back again for this issue after writing this. i'm hoping for a positive outcome where it will not cost me a fortune as the car is now out of warranty but was brought in for this while it was covered. *tr
Variable cylinder management transmission unexpectedly surges in traffic. in heavy traffic, or slippery road conditions, a sudden unexpected surge in the car could result in hitting the car in front. *tr
Purchased my accord new off the lot.1st problem came exactly 1 month later 2 sensors had to be replaced. oil light consistently stayed on i was having to change or add oil all the time. ive been to every honda dealer in san diego. mission valley finally agreed to a oil consumption test but they assured me nothing was wrong. their solution was anytime i needed oil i could stop by any honda dealership & they would be happy to top it off for me. because of this oil problem & the sensor consistently staying on the car began to lose power & shot out the timing belt. my car has been in my driveway since last july2015. after sending honda numerous letters ron from honda motor co finally contacted me. final result his recommendation was to take the car back to the dealership for another oil consumption test to be done & if theres any other problems i would have to pay out of pocket. because the car was only covered for 60,000 miles. i'm so over this car & honda. i no longer feel safe driving a honda!
