2004 honda accord - transmission failure. noticed high pitch whine the day prior to transmission failing while wife was on the interstate. barely avoided collision while trying to move to breakdown lane. *tr
My torque converter on my 2004 accord is not working. this has caused the transmission to fail. my car was not accelerating while i was on the highway. the rpm would rev up but the car would not speed up. *tr
The transmission failed while driving up the incline of an 8 lane bridge rending the car useless during heavy traffic. there was no emergency lane and cars were speeding by at 60 mph. if that's not dangerous and unsafe for everyone on the road, i don't what is..? luckily no one was hurt!! the car has been properly maintained..i have been informed that this was due to a torque converter failing and that honda or no governing agency is helping to make sure that the consumer is being helped with this very dangerous defect!!!!!! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. while driving approximately 50 mph the vehicle shifted in neutral on its own. she stated that the vehicle shifted back into drive on its own in less than a minute. after reaching her destination she parked the vehicle and within a few hours she stated that the vehicle began to function normally, but as she continued to drive the failure recurred. the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the vehicle would not shift into second gear. the manufacturer and dealer were willing to pay 50 percent of the repair cost to replace the transmission. she referenced recall 04v176000, power train:automatic transmission and stated that her vin was not part of the recall per the manufacturer. the failure and current mileages were 90,900.
I was driving my 2004 honda accord ex v6 on the freeway at 65 mph. all of the sudden the car jerked and felt like it downshifted and the vehicle abruptly slowed from 65 mph to 30mph in a matter of seconds. luckily there was not a car directly behind me and i was able to pull the car to the side of the road without an accident. if there had been someone directly behind me then there would have been a bad accident. this could have been extremely dangerous to anyone who was on the road with me. *tr
My 2004 accord v6, 117k miles...transmission slipped on thursday of last week for the first time, and by saturday the vehicle was inoperable. car revved with no acceleration while driving in traffic at 50 mph, was on a highway ramp with traffic all around me, very dangerous. it continued to sputter and slip, then would not go into reverse once parked. i just called the dealer and they denied knowledge of any problem with the transmissions on this problem and told me to "be careful what you read on the internet." this is my second, but last honda. i bought hondas because of their supposed reliability. this is a dangerous problem and honda should make concessions and own up to the problem. someone will end up dead before this is over if they don't make this public. there is no warning that this problem is coming on. one minute the car is fine, the next you are in a dangerous situation. *tr
When starting, my 2004 accord, a green d light came on then the car began to drive very roughly and without power. it was then that i found out about the recall on certain cars of that year, for the same problem, however, my vin number was not included in the recall so the honda dealer said in essence too bad that doesn't effect your car because your vin wasn't included! now i'm going to have to pay to replace a transmission in a car with only 77,000 miles! *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord ex. the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the speed suddenly decreased to 15 mph and the contact lost control. the vehicle jumped the curb and hit a pedestrian who was injured. the dealer stated that the failure was caused by metal in the transmission fluid caused by broken gears. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current and failure mileages were approximately 109,000.
Car goes into neutral while driving. will not go back into drive mode unless car is turned off then turned back on. *tr
I was driving to work on 9/21/2010. traffic was coming to a stop and i began to apply my brake. upon applying brake my vehicle accelerated causing me to rear end another vehicle. my air bags did not deploy and i'm not sure what my rate of speed was because i was trying to stop when the car accelerated. my front end is damaged to the tune of $4,886.08. after my accident i was confused about how it happened. i knew i had was paying attention on just didn't ram into another car. i was on a street was several school bus stops and they where making their rounds. so speeding is not an option. i was talking with my fiance and he stated that this has happened to him once while driving my car. he did not have an accident, and also thought it may or may not have been operator error it kind of shocked and confused him as well. i'm going to have my vehicle checked while being repaired. i just want this looked into this was really scary and could have ended up much worse. *tr
2004 honda accord trasmission failure. *tr
My 2004 honda accord ex v6 with 74,000 miles had transmission failure on the freeway. i was going 65 mph and without warning the rpm's revved up to 6000, the transmission disengaged, and my car almost stopped. fortunately, it went back into gear and i was able to pull over without any additional problems. i had my car towed to a local transmission repair shop and was told i needed a new transmission. i decided to have them rebuild it with a cost of $3,300 rather than install a brand new one due to the expense. i am so grateful there was no one in back of me on the freeway but i am extremely upset that i need a new transmission at only 74,000 miles. *tr
Just happened sept.5th. no action taken thus far.; 2004 honda accord accelerated w/o my foot on gas and then w/i a few minutes, it wouldn't go at all. 3 women stuck on major 2 lane highway on the way back from beach on labor day week-end. very dangerous and scary and unsafe. i would say that the transmission is faulty and that honda is responsible for what could have been a major accident. i am concerned for the safety and well-being of other honda accord owners that are not aware of this safety issue. police and tow truck were needed. *tr
My 2004 honda accord ex currently has 80,000 miles and needs a new transmission. research on the internet found that many other customers are having the same problem. please do something to hold honda responsible. *tr
I was driving my 2004 honda accord ex-v6 on the highway. when i attempted to accelerate by pressing on the gas pedal the car did not go any quicker no matter how hard i pressed. i pressed down hard a few times and then began to move over to the right lanes in case it got worse. the rpm's went a the way to almost the red but the car was not going and was sowing down. then out of the blue it went back to normal. i got off the highway and came to a stop light. when i started to go it started to move, got me in the middle of the intersection, then did it again, raving real loud but not moving. i had cars coming right at me and i thought i was going to die. then, the person i called to help me, showed up right behind me in his truck and pushed me out of the intersection just in time. honda almost got me killed. i had it towed to the dealer because i just had the transmission flushed due to their recommendation. they said the transmission was gone and would need a new one. they said i should call honda care because this has happened a lot lately and their are recalls on this transmission as well. honda told me too bad, we can't help you. i paid $3,800 for a rebuilt transmission that is not the same as the original model and now it gives me all kinds of problems and i feel very unsafe in this honda. i bought a honda because they are supposed to be safe. it seems honda does not care about the safety of its owners as much as it may seem. *tr
When i exit the 87 freeway san jose ca and attempted to drive over the bridge on curtner street my transmission failed and stop moving forward. then my car slip back a few foot because of the angle it was on. luckily the car behind me stop or else i would of hit them. the end result honda would not cover something that they know is common with their product and that is transmission. *tr
Transmission failed. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord ex. the contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the transmission would not shift into first or second gear and the vehicle began to rev but it would not accelerate. the vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where a rebuilt transmission was installed. the manufacturer assisted the contact with half of the repair costs. the current mileage was approximately 80,000. the failure mileage was 79,457. updated 11/22/10 *bf the consumer stated the transmission would slip upon acceleration. updated 11/23/10*jb
2004 v6 honda accord transmission had a radical and sudden gear change while traveling at 65 mph on the freeway. it down shifted with no warning or notice. there were absolutely no signs of trouble leading up to this incident. my honda has 111,000 miles on it. my owners manual says to have the transmission serviced at 120,000 miles. this incident almost caused a severe crash. safety is my biggest concern. other honda owners need to be aware of this issue. i am greatly concerned for their safety. this incident has made me want to stop all honda owners and make sure they know of this possibility. when we purchased this car we had no idea honda has such a safety issue with the 2004 transmissions. i am sure there are many others owners just as unaware. i hope nobody dies before honda takes responsibility for the mistake. i have contacted honda of america and they are telling me that because the safety recall stopped before my vin # was reached that they cannot help me. i have been quoted almost $4000 for the repair. i am scheduled to have the transmission replaced on 8/2/2010. the transmission has went into complete failure in just 2 days since our first sign something was amiss. i hope somebody will step up and make honda take responsibility. this incident could have cost my husband his life. *tr
I had a transmission failure in my honda accord ex(year 2004) model today. the car stopped running and i was not able to reverse it. i have to call aaa to take it to the repair shop. i am not sure whether there is any recall or others have reported a similar kind of issue. i thought to inform you first to investigate the matter. *tr
Driving down a major road when car started to smoke like crazy, pulled off to side of road then couldn't get car to drive in gear to a very close by service station. had car flatbed to dealer where i was told the car had transmission failure due to a cracked case (part failure) and needed to be replaced. the dealer contacted district manager to see if we could get a goodwill repair from american honda since it was a failed part and not due to misuse or not having had car serviced. they said they would cover %25 of a $4300.00 repair to put in a refurbished transmission with a 90 day warranty. i had it towed to a transmission specialty shop who rebuilt the tranny with a 1 year warranty for $2000.00. this seems to be a known problem with the 2003 and 2004 honda accords (recall was done but was vin specific). *tr
While i was driving 55 miles an hour on the highway my car suddenly shifted into neutral revving to very high rpm losing speed, i was able to get of the highway and luckily drivers around me were aware and saw my hazard lights. i had the car towed to a shop to find that the transmission had failed. with further research and conversation with honda north america i found this is not an unusual problem. i could have been in a very serious accident at high speed if it wasn't for the conscientious drivers around me. *tr
Transmission slipping while driving up hills or approaching slow turns, condition is getting worse by the day, occurring on a consistent basis, dealer said repair would be approx $3,000 and there was no recall on my vin # mileage is 111,376. *tr
The transmission drive train went out on my 2004 v6 honda accord, and caused all systems in my car to stop responding while on the freeway going 60 mph. in the process multiple cars came into close contact with my vehicle before it stranded me in the middle of the freeway. upon contact with several automotive shops in area, i was advised that this has been a longstanding issue with this vehicle drive train not being configured for the 4 cylinder engine and not correctly for a v-6 engine. *tr
This has happened twice while driving on highway. the tcs (traction control) warning light comes on as well the engine icon light, and then the automatic transmission on the 2004 accord v6 won't drop out of high gear. it feels like it's stuck in 5th or 4th gear and won't downshift. i have to stop car, restart it, then the transmission works like normal. *tr
While driving my grandson to work, traveling at 45 mph the transmissions ceased for about 2 seconds, then shifted into a lower gear for a few seconds then ceased again. i stopped turned the engine off for about 5 min. turned it back on and worked find for about 3 min. then it all started again. left my grandson at work & was able to take the vehicle to the honda dealer & paid $81.67 to have the fluid replace. i was driving home and the same symptoms occurred & return to the dealer. the dealer then informed me that the transmission needed to be replaced at $4075.00 but, that they will contact the honda rep. in an attempt to offset the cost. honda rep. agreed to pay $864.00 & the remainder ($3211) would be charge to me. my car has 121,941 miles. i am not at all happy with honda, since this vehicle has a recall for this vehicle's problem, what can i do? the vehicle n question is a 2004, honda accord. *tr
My transmission locked up on me and totally needs to be replaced. gave be tons of problems like stepping on gas car revved up but didn't go nowhere, downshifted on its on causing cars behind me to almost crash into me. now its done. needs to be replaced and cant afford it!! *tr
We were lucky that we weren't killed!!!2004 honda accord exl 6cyl vin#[xxx]. we were traveling on route 95 north of boston in the middle lane at an approx. speed of 60 mph on june 10, 2010 at approx. 6:15pm. i went to pass the car in front of us and started to pull into the passing lane on the left. suddenly, the car jerked violently and slowed down suddenly. the car in back of us almost hit us and swerved into the lane on the right to avoid hitting our car. the other driver was almost run over by a semi truck who jammed on his brakes. i thought he (the truck) was going to jack knife. i see that this transmission problem is a recall item for honda. the honda dealer (kelley honda in lynn, mass.) says that they will not help us financially to replace the transmission. the car has 90,000 miles and is in good shape otherwise. we are very upset at honda's reaction to this safety failure and we feel strongly that the us gov't should step in before people are needlessly killed in cars with this transmission. we also note on the internet that there are tons of people with the same problem and very dangerous experiences. please help and get the word out!! [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
2004 honda accord accelerated suddenly, slowed down with braking, sped up again and then there was no power although car in gear. i am lucky i did not have an accident. car was towed to the dealer who is asking me for 3969k to replace the failed transmission. car only has 62k miles on it. honda has recalled 2004 accords for the same problem, but refused to cover mine or contribute toward the defective transmission, because my vin was not recalled--although i have the same problem as the recalled vin's. nhtsa is not investigating, unfortunately, and people's lives are stake here. *tr updated ivoq 06/08/10.*jb the consumer would like an explanation as to why his vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. updated ivoq 08/25/10*jb
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle would shift into second gear, lock in place and decrease in speed. the dealer performed a diagnostic test and stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 67,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated when starting the ignition, the check engine light illuminated on the warning panel. the vehicle would not shift into third gear and would not accelerate past 35-40 mph. the vehicle began abnormally jerking and would not increase speed. the vehicle was towed to his residence. an independent mechanic performed a diagnostic and produced failure code p0741 (torque converter). the contact located nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000: power train:automatic transmission, which he believed to be directly related to the failure. the manufacturer stated his vin was not included in the recall and advised having the vehicle towed to the dealer for further inspection. the vehicle had not yet been repaired. the failure mileage and current mileages were 94,000.
While driving to work going about 55mph, the car suddenly downshifted quickly slowing. after a couple seconds of down shift, the car revved to high rpms and was in felt like it was in neutral (it was actually in drive). i had to coast across 2 lanes to get off the road. once off the road, the transmission was slipping . then it went into gear and i was able to drive on a backroad. but when trying to shift, the car would rev high as it couldn't shift to the next higher hear and acted as if it were in neutral. warning lights or check engine light never came on. the sudden slowing in traffic when it downshifted nearly caused an accident with the car behind me. *tr
Tl*-the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact was driving approximately 35 mph, the engine rpm increased and the speed rate decreased. the engine was turned off. the vehicle was restarted and the engine rpm continued to increase. the contact stated there was a recall associated with the failure under nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000 (power train: automatic transmission). the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. the technician advised that the transmission be replaced. the transmission was in the process of repairs at the time of the complaint. the failure and current mileages were 100,000.
My husband and i were driving on the 405s in his 2004 honda accord 3.0 vtech. while driving uphill transmission started to fluctuate. jumped up to 6 rpms then started slipping. had we waited any longer to pull to the shoulder we would have been in an accident. had mechanic check out problem told us transmission is shot and we need to replace it. we've been changing fluid every 3 years and i recently had it changed that previous tuesday. i called american honda's corporate office and they told me the only thing i could do was have the honda dealership check it out but the car wont even move so i have no way to get it to the dealership without a tow. then honda will probably tell me that my transmission is dead which i already know then charge me for the service. im pregnant and had it not been for the ability to pull over quickly, my family would not be here and worse off, someone else's family could have been involved. *tr
1. per the 2004 honda accord owners manual, the transmission fluid does not have to be replaced until 120,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. a few weeks ago, at 92,000 miles, the car was 6 years old so we had the transmission fluid replaced for the first time using honda fluid, all in strict accordance with the honda owner's manual. the mechanic said the original fluid was very gray and there was a lot of metal attached to the drain plug. it looked really bad. 2. on 4/30/10 at 92,500 miles, (500 miles later), we were driving at 35 mph and the car started cutting out. we stopped immediately and the car idled fine. we started to accelerate again and the car would not shift out of first gear. we had car towed immediately to the honda dealer. 3. on 3/31/10, the honda dealer told us that the transmission needs to be replaced. i spoke to the dealer and honda motor company and showed them nhtsa campaign id number 04v176000, which is a recall of the 2004 honda accord automatic transmission, but they told me it was vin specific and suggested i file a complaint with the nhtsa in hopes that the recall would be expanded. *tr
Engine racing like car was in neutral but car was in drive
On thursday march 11, 2010 my wife and i were traveling in our 2004 honda accord on a 45 mph road. when making a left turn on a green light, my shifter popped out of 2nd gear and into neutral causing the engine to rev to the redline. in neutral, the car lost power and coasted to a stop in the middle of the intersection with the oncoming traffic speeding directly towards the passenger side of the car where my wife was sitting. additionally, we were almost rear-ended by the car behind us also making a left turn. this problem with the shifter is occurring with increasing frequency, and has become an extreme danger to me, my family, and everyone else on the same roads as i. my trusted mechanic examined the car and determined the transmission is failing and needs to be completely replaced. i will be fortunate to have this done for under $2000. he could not believe this happened to a newer honda with as low mileage as mine. i've spent hours communicating with mcgrath honda (the dealership that sold the car) and honda of america corporation. i have only been treated with rudeness and unwillingness to take responsibility for a vehicle that is simply a lemon. nobody will even offer to examine the car without charging me an exorbitant fee. nothing has been done to correct the failure. *tr
No indication of automatic transmission issues. automatic transmission failure occurred on interstate at 70 mph, pressed on accelerator pedal and would not accelerate. was on innermost lane, had to cross 3 interstate right lanes during commuting hour with no acceleration (was like driving in neutral). able to get to next exit. was on a downslope so able to coast down. at the base of the hill, stopped. could not drive the vehicle anymore, press the pedal in d and r and would not move called tow truck to tow me to honda dealership 40 miles away considered an automatic transmission failure. this is the first occurrence of transmission failure with this vehicle. honda service repair had to replace all automatic transmission parts. as of date, honda corp. will not warranty the parts and labor. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated as she was driving 40 mph the transmission stopped without giving any warnings. the vehicle shifted out of gear and stopped in the middle of the road. the vehicle was towed to the honda dealer and they informed her that the transmission burned out and needed to be replaced. there was no warranty on the transmission and the contact stated that she had to pay for the repairs. the failure mileage was 104,000.
My daughter was driving home from school in our 2004 honda accord ex v6. on the top of the crescent city connection (new orleans bridge), the car stopped accelerating. because she was on an incline, it started rolling back. she panicked but put her foot on the brake. thankfully, a n.o. policeman pulled up and put his lights on calling for the bridge police. bridge police pushed her off bridge. once down she turned off the car, turned it back on and it worked. it happened again on her way home. she turned it off and back on and it started working again. no warning lights come on, it just stops accelerating. honda dealer said technician had to drive it awhile and had same experience. the car didn't give any problem code either but said if we continued to drive it, it would. says transmission needs to be replaced. told him internet site is flooded with similar transmission failures and this is a safety problem. said american honda would assist us if we pay $1,944.24 of the $4,500 to replace the transmission. it's a known problem with the 2003 and 2004 transmission and should be a recall. honda will order the transmission tomorrow to do the work. *tr
In january 29, 2010, my wife was driving home with my children when the car suddenly lost power. we had it towed to my mechanic who checked it and told us that it was the transmission. we eventually had it replaced for $2300. i was really surprised that the transmission failed so prematurely but since it had passed its warranty i didn't bother notifiying honda. however, the same thing happened again this november 11, 2011 while my wife was driving my children home. the rebuilt transmission we had put in failed as well after 30,000 miles. luckily, it didn't happen on the freeway. my family could have been killed. now i'm having it replaced with the used one because i don't want to spend another $2300. i thought i was alone on this but i found out that a lot of people are having the same problem. my neighbor has an accord and the same thing happened. i hope something can be done about this before somebody dies. *kb
My honda accord 2004 has a transmission problem whereby it will drop into neutral during normal driving. the most pronounced time i noticed it, was driving in peak hour traffic and trying to cross lanes of oncoming traffic. just before doing so the car revved to 6000rpm with very little forward acceleration. i had time to cancel my actions to cross, however had the transmission dropped out 2 sec later i would have found myself in the middle of oncoming traffic including trucks at high speed. luckily a major accident was avoided however i fear for the safety of the vehicle. i have since had the car at honda for determination of the fault. they admit there is a defect and have offered to assist with repairs by charging me 1600 to fully replace the transmission. my position is that since honda has already recalled similar 2004 honda accords for transmission issues that they should include my vin in the recall range. honda had issued a corporate release regarding the recall stating it was a significant safety concern and affected 1,000,000 vehicles world wide. i can't help but think my transmission is suffering the same fate as these other accords. *tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 honda accord which was purchased brand new in december 2003. while driving at speeds of less than 30 mph and slowing down, the vehicle lunged forward. the next day, while driving at speeds of less than 50 mph, she noticed the rpms dropped and the vehicle began to lose power suddenly without warning. the vehicle then began to slowly pick up speeds. she immediately drove off of the highway. the vehicle was towed to her local dealer who stated that the transmission failed and needed to be replaced. no repairs were made to date. the failure and current mileages were 123,000.
Car has been maintained 100% according to honda's owners manual. while driving on the freeway, the car will downshift into first gear causing a drastic reduction in speed and fast. cold cause an accident. *tr
I was driving and all of a sudden the transmission began slipping. within 2-3 miles the car would not move in any gear. i called tow truck and when he arrived i tried again and was successful in turning the car around. i found on this site a reference to a recall notice but honda doesn't show any recalls for my car. one repair shop wants to put in another transmission est. $3,000. i am planning on taking to honda dealer and try again in person. *tr
While driving low speed 20 to 40 mph car started jerking bucking pulled over to store parking lot waited 10 minutes scared to drive 10 min to home but made it. attempt to drive vehicle next day after driving start jerking transmission slipping pulled over again . try to move vehicle again cars would not move. contact american honda informed transmission failed was informed my vehicle id was not on the 2004 accord transmission recall list. ask for good faith repair refused. *tr
Driving honda accord on sh 121, pressed the accelerator and engine started revving but car wouldn't go. tried shifting into other drives and back into drive thinking that maybe it was stuck in between gears (even though it's an automatic) and the car would go for a bit then do the same thing. i eventually had to pull off the road with my hazard lights on hoping i wouldn't get rear ended. called and had my car towed to the dealer. first the keys were lost somewhere between the tow truck and the dealership, then the dealer first couldn't replicate what had happened and after we told them to let the car warm up some more, they did replicate it. so we went from "there's nothing wrong with your car" to " you need the whole transmission replaced". this for a honda that doesn't have 100k on it yet. checked websites and seems this isn't an uncommon thing with this car and still waiting to hear what, if anything honda will do to correct their problem. the car hasn't had any symptoms and has always been serviced at the dealer and had its scheduled maintenance performed. i bought a honda so i wouldn't have these problems. i feel ripped off. *tr
Drove home from vacation and car was fine. next morning driving to work felt transmission begin to slip. on way home from work the transmission began slipping and rpm's shot up to 5000 to almost 6,000 and car decreased speed rapidly, car jerked and began to go again. waited until i could get to a empty straight road and tried to increase speed rapidly and same thing occurred- rpm's shot up and car not in gear. drove next day to work and car did same thing. had to have car towed from work. honda says there isn't a recall and have not had "any complaints to this, it could be that the proper service has not been completed by you". well i have my car serviced every 3,000 miles and had transmission fluid flushed every 10,000. last time it was flushed none of their service tech thought there was a problem due to not being serviced properly. *tr
