We have classified the 176 complaints from 2004 Honda Accord about POWER TRAIN into the following categories.
My 2004 honda accord v6 transmission decided to die on saturday november the 15th. i was driving on the interstate when i realized the rpm's were going up, but i wasn't getting any acceleration. i pulled over to check my transmission fluid, oil and etc. everything was good. so i start back on the road trying to make it to my destination. the next thing i know i heard what sounded like a chain breaking off and the car jumped back like i was gearing down really low. i hit my head on the steering wheel and blacked out for a minute. thankfully i had someone with me and they grabbed the steering wheel and directed us off the interstate. we lifted the hood once again and could smell something burnt. we were able to get it to a mechanic who said the transmission had failed. we had no issues prior to the date the transmission failed. i'm extremely upset by this. the car had been taken care of and maintained regularly. my family is honda enthusiast and have never had problems. that is why we always bought honda's, for their reliability. i think honda needs to make this right and have the transmission fixed. from what i've read this has been a major problem affecting tons and the transmission has been recalled. i thank god i didn't kill or hurt anyone during this ordeal. *tr
Transmission failure while driving. bought vehicle used in feb. 2014 from dealer with 97,570mi. at 104,000, transmission failed. repairs can range from $4500 to $3400, with either a honda rebuilt transmission or my own being rebuilt. since honda was aware of these failures (had a recall before i was an owner) and the dealer that sold me the car was likely also aware, i find these practices totally dishonest and bordering on illegal. i paid almost $10,000 for this vehicle because of low mileage, only to have a major failure 8 months later. *tr
Driving on highway at 55mph. started to pull a slight hill and was preparing to pass a truck. vehicle rpms went higher but speed continued to drop off. ended up coming to a complete stop on a bridge with no shoulder. had to shut the vehicle off and then restart to get it to go again. went about 14 miles and it did it again. took it to dealership. was serviced last week and had transmission fluid changed as a part of recommended maintenance by honda dealership. car in shop now. the loss of power could have had serious repercussions on our safety. *tr
I have transmission problem with my 2004 honda accord at 122,000 miles. that's unheard of! i've purchased 3 hondas before this one & never a problem. the torque converter came apart on my transmission & i had to get it rebuilt. the bill was $2200. american honda said sorry & they couldn't guarantee when a transmission will go out. really? 122,000 miles? i will not purchase another honda. i was on the interstate & could have been in a serious accident! all they can say is sorry. i have never been so upset before. to top it all off the dealership wanted to repair it for $4700 or trade my car in for $1000. by the way i wasn't able to get any type of reimbursement for my repair bill. *tr
Felt like the gears stopped engaging and the rpms spiked. slowed down and got it to reengage but only in 1st or 2nd gear. after pulling over, the gears wouldn't engage at all. restarted the car but the same slippage and rpm spiking happened again. dealer wants $5600 to repair. honda had a limited recall but is reviewing on a case-by-case basis. have been a loyal honda customer for nearly 25 years, but am questioning that loyalty now. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving at no particular speed the rpm's abnormally increased to 7500 independently. the vehicle started to jerk back and forth with the service light and acs lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, who stated there was a transmission failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 100,530.
While driving home from work i came to a red light, as i proceeded to hit the gas the car started to jump and would not accelerate. i was hitting the gas the engine would rev and the rpm's were super high but the car would only go about 5 mph with the ending revving really loud. after about a few seconds of hitting the gas and only going 5mph the car would finally jump into gear and go. every time the car would come to a stop and then have to go again that's when it would happen over and over again. that night we decided to take it for a test drive and that's when the engine light came on and the "d" shift light was blinking and the "tca" light came on. there is seriously something wrong with the car when the day before the car drove like new. we looked up the recalls on online for our vehicle and see that there is one out for the auto transmission. just weird all the sudden this would happen and there is a recall out in that. please help! *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph, the check engine and tcs light illuminated on the instrument panel. the contact mentioned that the vehicle suddenly decelerated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the technician diagnosed that the transmission assembly needed to be replaced. the contact was made aware of recall nhtsa campaign id number: 04v176000 (power train). however, the vin was not included in the recall. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 94,775.
Vehicle started slowing down all of a sudden then i proceeded to pull over. once i pulled over turn vehicle off and started vehicle back up it pulled off fine then it was slipping gears. pulled over again and turned vehicle off same thing and the last time i repeated the vehicle completely blacked out like it was the battery. vehicle had to be pushed on side of a rural road once i decided to get off of highway. my vehicle was left on side of the road, vandalized, rained in after one window was down once vehicle was disabled. *tr
2004 honda accord v6 ex (98k) 1st time i was making a right hand turn & as i completed the turn & tried to accelerate there was no power. engine revved but car did not go anywhere. crept along to pull over on the side of the road. waited a few minutes & drove home about 10mph. luckily i was only 3 blocks from home. thought maybe it was bad gas or something. drove fine the next few days. 2nd time i saw my life flash before my eyes as i went to make a left hand turn. as i started my turn, again trans stalled only this time oncoming traffic was coming at me which included a monstrous semi-truck. as cars slammed on their brakes i crept through the intersection to the side of the road. car towed to my mechanic who has taken care of the car since i bought it brand new in 2004. mind you i had no security warnings or alerts come up on the dash. i have had no leaks, nothing on the ground where i park. my mechanic took for test ride & had the same thing happen. unfortunately he does not repair trans. call honda after finding multiple complaints & lawsuits on this trans only to be told my vin # is not included on the recall & there is nothing they can do. ridiculous that they only include certain vin #'s when it's the same trans in all these cars. i really love my accord, extremely disappointed in the way honda is handling this. i have had no other problems with this car other than the power steering which there was a recall on. asked to speak to a supervisor at honda & was told she would review the case & get back to me by end of day monday. very unfortunate, we have been through 14 honda's in my immed family. the only other one that had a problem was my brother's 2003 honda accord v6 ex in california. his trans went at 60,000 but was covered under extended warranty. he's at 115k & so far so good. honda, don't ruin your reputation like gm, admit fault & take responsibility. *tr

I was driving my car for the regular maintenance and all of a sudden the transmission failed and it slowed down immediately. i was lucky enough that i didn't have any vehicle in my back so i could control the car and moved it aside. otherwise it would have been a disaster as i was driving in one of the busiest roads. honda should proactively take actions on these kind of defects as its the matter with lives and not about just money. *tr
The car went crazy revving up and down on its own. driving on the highway, it felt like the car would be applying the brakes on its own only to rev up again but felt like it was on neutral, then the gear would shift abruptly. at the intersection, once the light turned green, the engine would not proceed no matter how light i applied the gas pedal (i didn't want to "drown" it), it felt as if it were in neutral - only to speed up on its own. it felt like the car didn't know whether to speed up or slow down - the gears would jump from one to another on its own. horrible! *tr
No forward movement in the middle of heavy traffic. *tr
When i was driving on the highways, all of the sudden the car went into neutral and would not accelerate. i tried to pull over to the side of the highway, as i turned the transmission went into gear and causing the car to accelerate to 50mph and hitting the vehicle in front of me. my insurance company fixed my car and then i took the car to the dealer to get the transmission checked out and they said the transmission is working as designed by honda. i felt confused because it was not working properly and they checked for recalls and found a recall on the transmission which had already been done. they said if i don't feel safe driving with that transmission that i would have to pay 5,000 dollars for a new one. i declined the offer and saw online many people had the same issue as me. *tr
Power train slipped and engine rpm was around 2000 rpm then rpm went up to around 5000 when power train slipped. engine light came on. *tr

At passing speed the car just stopped accelerating and began to drop speed suddenly. the motor revved with gas pedal pressing but it went nowhere. it coasted to a stop. no warning. no stuttering. it just dropped speed and went no more. *tr

Attempted to pass semi truck on a tollway, was in the fast lane when transmission failed with the semi to the right and fast moving traffic behind me. transmission felt like it slipped into neutral, eventually it did go back into gear long enough to make it to a repair shop. entire rebuild at 2700.00. *tr

This is my second report of a transmission failure in my 2004 honda accord. my transmission locked up and in getting over i was hit from behind in a hit and run. i had to have it rebuilt when it failed back in 2010, and now it is failing again. i reported the incident (10342732) to the nhtsa back in october of 2010. my vin number does not fall in the range of customers with this issue; however, like many that purchased this vehicle during this time...the transmission is prone to failure. *tr
While driving on interstate 74 transmission slipped causing car to lose speed. transmission then began slipping in and out of gear. pending cost to replace transmission. *tr
I was driving my car and my transmission started slipping. i keep up with all of the scheduled maintenance for this car. i got the transmission rebuilt and now less then 3 months later the car is starting to jerk again and the drive light on the dash is starting to blink. i also have this error code that won't go away saying there is something wrong with the fuel tank. i got the gas knob changed and the error goes away but when you hook the computer up to it, the code still comes up. the air bag light also comes on and off when it wants to. *tr
Transmission slipping and down shifting overnight. causes engine to stall.
I had transmission failure about a year ago, the transmission started to slip and didn't make any shifting, it was dangerous because the car stoped many time while i was driving, so i decide to fix it , and yesterday 9/16/2013 it happened again, same problem with transmission
While i were driving locals, i notice a sudden drop in speed and spike in rpm. when i tried to accelerate, only rpm would go up and the car would not shift to higher gear. this happened without any warnings. no engine light. nothing. if this happened in the freeway, it would have been very serious situation. i also noticed numerous 2003 2004 honda accord owners to have similar problems. this is definitely manufacturer's fault. i had to rebuild the transmission which came out to be $1820. this is serious situation. *tr
I was driving my 2004 accord home through the city (speeds of 30 mph or less). i had gone about 5 miles without a problem. suddenly, i heard an annoying car revving it's engine, only to realize it was my car! it felt as if it were slipping and then it was driving as if it was stuck in first. i could not get it to go above 20 mph. i could not pull over due to bike lanes and heavy traffic. eventually the vehicle was only going 15 mph -- it would not go higher. i pulled onto a side street, put the vehicle in park, and could not get it to move. then, several warning lights popped up. after restarting the vehicle i was able to drive it the last mile of my trip, still in the 15-20 mph. i had it towed to the dealership. they indicated the transmission needs to be replaced to the tune of $5450. i had not had any problems with the transmission prior to 8/29/13 and i had kept up on all regular maintenance. in fact, i'd always taken it to the dealership. i never received any information about a recall for this part (although i did receive one for the power steering hose). after 8/29/13, i read that several honda models (including this one) were recalled for transmission defects. the dealer and american honda are currently alleging that mine was not part of it, but it appears that it was.*jb
August: 1st. driving home shifted into 1st gear to go from a stop light. car hesitated, began to go real slow even when trying to accelerate. pushed gas pedal all the way to floor car did not go any faster. rpm were revving up as if the car was going faster. went into 2nd gear....the same. check engine and tcs light was on. turned off car 15min later the tcs light was off but check engine light was still on. stayed on for about 2 days. got codes check, it stated it was all misfires. 300-306. reset. september: on the 15 fwy south on a sunday in september with my mother and kids going around 70mph in fast lane. car then lost power instantly. went down to 40mph car began to jerk and sputter. had to put on hazard light and get off fwy as safe as possible. very dangerous!!!!! stop and called aaa. engine codes read again. codes were: po300, po3001, po302, po303, po304, po305, po306,.p2138. shut off car waited 30mins and car drove fine and tcs light went off, the check engine light went off later. took car to honda specialist and they said it was the misfire of 1st coil spring. got that replaced along with fuel injection cleaning and oil change. november-january: car running sluggish. honda dealer says nothing is wrong. taking off sluggish. check engine light flashes on and off from time to time. feb 13th driving home on 210 fwy east at 8:30p. going 70mph in 6the gear cruising and car instantly looses power again to 30 mph. making cars swerve around me. had to pull off fwy very slow with hazard lights on. car began to sputter and jerk. feb16. check engine and tcs light turned on while stopped at stop light. car lost power and slowly turned into intersection. pulled over. this is now becoming a safety hazard for my son and i and no one can give us answers and keep fixing things that aren't fixing the problem. please help! *tr
I was driving on the highway and noticed that my rpm increased all of the sudden. after my rpm increased my vehicle started jerking and was not responding. the transmission started slipping into neutral. i managed to get home driving 10 mph. i have looked online and this is a major issues with these cars! honda needs to recall these transmissions! *tr
When i attempted to shift the vehicle out of park and into gear the silver gear shift knob broke off. i super glued it back together in order to shift gears to go to store to get new part. it later fell off again and multiple pieces came out of the opening. the gear shift knob broke into about 7 to 10 pieces. had to stick my finger into opening in order to push the shift mechanism down to get it out of park. spoke to local honda dealership and they reported they keep those parts in stock from about 03 to 05 because for some reason alot of those are breaking. he was able to tell me that without looking up the part number. *tr
We experienced a transmission failure while driving on i-77 in west virginia. the transmission all of a sudden began spewing transmission fluid, and started to slip whil driving up a hill. we had to frantically get out of the way of a tractor-trailer, but it was difficult because the transmission was slipping and the car had no power. *tr

The car pulls when easing off gas or coming off brakes. took the car to a mechanic and he stated there was a problem with the transmission internally. called honda home office and stated i was aware of problems they were having with the 1999 to 2005 models and they stated there was nothing they could do. *tr

Transmission failure caused by torque converter problem. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact started the ignition and the transmission shifted into drive independently, crashing into a parked, unoccupied vehicle. there was no personal injury. a police report was filed of the incident. the vehicle was driven to the contact's residence and was later taken to an independent mechanic for exterior body damage repairs. the cause of the failure was not determined. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 146,000.
Transmission slipped out of gear and the engine revved up in rpms. car continues to not be able to maintain shifting gears effectively. *tr
Was driving on a highway at approximately 60mph when the vehicle would not accelerate but the rpm's would increase when the gas pedal was pressed. appearing almost as if the vehicle was in neutral. i checked the shifter to make sure i was still in drive which it was. tried to shift the gear to d3 and d2 however there was no change. while this was happening the speed of the vehicle was reduced to about 30 - 35mph when i was almost rear ended as it was during rush hour traffic. i was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road, where a state trooper stopped to see if everything was ok. i placed the vehicle in park while speaking with the trooper. i attempted to place the vehicle in drive to try and get back onto the road however the vehicle did not engage and would not move forward. i placed the vehicle in reverse and it jerked backwards. i turned the vehicle off and immediately restarted it. i was able to place it in drive and get back on the highway until i reached 60mph and the problem started again. i again pulled over, turned off the vehicle, restarted it and would continue for a few miles until the vehicle acted up again. i had to repeat this process about 4 times until i got to the dealership where the vehicle now sits. it appeared that this wasn't a problem while i stayed under 60mph as when i hit local roads and the speed limit was 30mph the car did not act up. *tr
I had a sudden fallen transmission problem while i was driving the car started jerking and loose speed due to the transmission not putting in the gears it got over heated fast and i was in traffic and had a stranger help me push it to the side and aaa towed it to my home then the next morning towed it to the dealer and the dealer said i need a new transmission after reading comments on motor trend.com honda failed to send me a recall notice about my transmission. the 2004 accordv6 obviously have transmission defects and i want my transmission paid for from honda im really upset and honda corp. needs to pay for this. *tr
I was driving on the interstate when all of a sudden i was no longer able to accelerate. the car jerked when i tried to accelerate or brake. i was able to steer it off onto the side of the road. after taking it in to get it looked at, i was told it is the transmission. according to several articles online and mechanic at the shop i took it too, 2004 honda accords are known for having weak transmissions. it was so unexpected and i take car of my car. i felt completely unsafe trying to get it off the interstate going 20 miles an hour as it jerked along and apparently people already know about this issue?? i have just had the car for a year now and bought it from a honda dealership. not a word was said to me about the issues with these models or safety recalls for several honda models made in 2004 - but apparently not mine. *tr
As i am driving my vehicle gets stuck at 20 mph and the rpms go high (above 3,000-4,000). then the rpms eventually go back down and the vehicle speeds up. i have 2 boys, a 2 year old and a 5 year old along with my wife. i am fearful for their safety. i researched that there was a recall in regards to the transmission over heating at 2nd gear from lack of lubrication but i never received a recall, or at least my dealership did not receive a recall notice. i am not in the best financial situation to have a transmission serviced, but i have kept up with all of the vehicle maintenance including the timing belt, water pump seals belts etc which were replaced not too long ago. i was hoping that the nhtsa could assist me with this urgent matter. *tr
Transmission suddenly started slipping badly at 115k miles. the transmission was always slow to get into initial gear to begin with but i thought it was normal. at near highway speeds my rpm's shot up but the car was slowing down due to the transmission just slipping, it also down shifted wit ha jerk. a notorious issue with these years of honda's! "working" now with american honda and hoping for a helping hand as i'm just out of the certified warranty. honda dealer quoted $6,040 to replace the transmission with a rebuilt. i bought a honda to have it last, is 6k worth putting into a car worth $9,000 in great condition? please help honda!!!!
On december 10th, 2012, transmission failed completely while commuting to work on mn 95. barely avoided collision reaching safe shoulder area (winter conditions). injured back pushing vehicle out of way of oncoming traffic. transmission began whining upon cold start and slow in shifting at approximately 125,000. attempted diagnosis at honda dealership - failing transmission. was told to contact honda america regarding 2004 recall and 2006 settlement. no response to request for assistance from honda america. local transmission repair shop diagnosed slight slipping in 3rd and 4th gears, even when warmed up. looked up technical service bulletins regarding 2004 recall repairs utilizing jet pack to increase transmission fluid flow (and pressure?). called honda america and was told vin indicated the problem had already been addressed during vehicle manufacture (2nd half of 2004) and recall for jet pack was not needed. vehicle had to be towed and remanufactured transmission installed. cost - $4,000 plus lost work. despite 2004 recall, 2006 settlement and extended warranty (7yr/100k), honda america refuses to assist. have owned 6 hondas since 2000 (1998 accord, 2000 civic, 2001 accord, 2003 odyssey, 2004 accord and this 2004 accord). will now sell my repaired 2004 accord and my 2003 odyssey fast before its transmission fails and will have to seek another company that actually stands behind its products. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly lost acceleration power and was unable to exceed 30 mph. the vehicle was not taken to a mechanic. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileage was 53,800.
As i was driving the transmission (automatic, v6 accord) kept slipping so although i was applying the gas the car was slowing down and not moving. so i had to turn the car off and then back on and it would move again for a little but and then the transmission would slip again and i would have to pull over and turn the car off and back on. i then had to have the car towed to a transmission shop for repairs. the transmission show replaced the transmission, so parts and labor came out to $1750.00. *tr
