Recently reported AIR BAGS problems on 2000 Honda Accord

I purchased a 2000 honda accord for my daughter and the srs light came on. i took it to the dealer who scanned it and said it needed a new opds unit and sensor costing over $800.50. as i research it, i am astonished to see how many honda's are affected by this problem and that a widespread recall is not in effect. please investigate this serious safety issue that could cause airbags not to deploy. this is unacceptable in this day and age. *tr

I spoke with a customer service representative by the name of [xxx] from american honda motor co., inc. on june 12, 2005 about an srs related problem relating to their technical service bulletin 06-009 dated february 5, 2008. i was told that the warranty has already expired because the vehicle is more than 10 years old even if the mileage is less than 124,000 miles. i am the second owner of the vehicle when it was purchased from a private party back in 2004. since these models came without an air conditioning unit, i had one installed the same year (2004) at the closest dealership near our place of residence. because of this service, they should have updated the ownership record for this vehicle to reflect my name as the new owner. when this bulletin came out, honda failed to furnish me a copy of the tsb since i only found out from them on june 25, 2012 that the said vehicle was still registered with the first owner. when the problem about the srs unit occurred which was directly related to the bulletin they released on february 5, 2008 they would not honor the bulletin anymore and even told me that my vehicle was not covered, even if the bulletin specifically states that the vehicles affected included "2000-2001 honda accord 2-dr and 4-dr: all with opds". i went to the dealership last friday, 6/22/2012 without knowing that this tsb ever existed and they were charging me a substantial fee to get it fixed even though it is a factory defect and should be fixed by them without cost to me. my complaint is that they failed to furnish me a copy of the service bulletin and now that this problem has occurred to my vehicle they will not honor that service bulletin. i would have brought my car in to get fixed even without this problem had i received this bulletin on time. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I have had trouble with my honda's seat belt staying locked in. i've also have the srs light on after a battery change. i figured out how to reset it but it comes right back on. i have taken the car into honda and they tell me my car is "not affected" by any recalls...i explained the seat belts are supposed to be covered under a lifetime warranty. they wanted 125.00 diagnostic fee to determine if it was the seat belt and what the code is if it isn't the seat belt i have to pay the diagnostic fee and 800.00.to get the airbags to work for something that is supposed to be covered under a lifetime warranty,.i even tried going back to a different service adviser. reading online i see that many people have the srs failure and some suspect the cause relates to battery and alternator voltage! appears to be a convenient failure to state whatever they want and get the owner to pay! recently, honda has had to recall airbags. maybe it's a blessing that people's airbags have been rendered useless since they blow up and have killed people!! i hope the nhtsa realizes how many peoples airbags haven't even been working! well surprise, my car isn't covered under the latest airbag replacement. i am most dissatisfied with honda they are not standing behind their products and don't seem to care if they lose customers (by death or otherwise). i tried calling there 800 number several times to no avail they were rude and condescending. this was my 3rd honda and my last. the recall even states there is not to be a charge to check this however, they will not without me paying there fee! don't care the nhtsa and honda's own recall notice is irrelevant to them. in light of the latest issues with airbags i think i will write an editorial for the local news or maybe call the local television station to highlight this issue ongoing blatant disregard for their customers. *tr

The srs light came on. honda tells us that the component that regulates the airbags (a mini-computer in the dash?) has failed and must be replaced. honda advises that, until replaced, the airbags will not work. based on the internet research i have done, this appears to be a fairly common problem. honda wants to charge $1000 to replace the unit, although it appears that the component is available online for about $325, and requires about an hour of labor to install. this seems to us to be a pretty fundamental safety issue, and this component should be engineered to last well beyond the anticipated lifetime of the vehicle. *tr

The srs light has come on my 2000 accord. now it is past the extended warranty of 10 years. i got suckered into paying $100 to honda for them to diagnose. they came back and said the opds needs to be replaced and the airbag won't deploy because of the srs light on. they wanted another $300 to replace. i decided not to replace because i am not convinced it won't fail again but now i am driving around knowing my airbags won't deploy. there is an obvious faultiness with the srs and opds and i can't believe that honda feel a warranty extension is sufficient. they should be recalling this serious safety problem. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer to be repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 01v380000 (seat belts:front:buckle assembly). upon receiving the vehicle, the horn was no longer functioning. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the contact was informed that the front drivers side air bag needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 33,213. updated 09/01/2011 *ln *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact was driving 35 mph when another vehicle drove through a stop sign and crashed into the front of the contact's vehicle. the air bags did not deploy and the seat belt tightened around the contact. there were no injuries. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnosis. the contact was advised that the seat belt buckle assembly would need to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and the current mileage was 869,900.

Srs in 2000 honda accord is on. advised it is the opds sensor, and opds unit. recalls on similar models, but not my vin #. air bag will not deploy if there is an accident. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the supplemental restraint system and the air bag warning lights illuminated. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the sensor inside the seat belt buckle needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 66,370.

The srs light has gone off approximately once a year for approximately the last 5 years. it has always been caused by a sensor in the seat belt, which is covered by warranty. however, the dealer always tries to charge a diagnosis fee to determine if it is a warranty issue and it is a safety issue every time the light goes off. it is also a huge inconvenience. the dealer has told me that the airbags will not work when the light is on as a safety precaution. each time it happens the seatbelt sensor needs to be replaced. this is a safety concern because the airbags are frequently not working. *ln

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the contact stated that as he started the vehicle, the air bag srs warning light was illuminated. the vehicle was not taken to be examined for the cause of the failure and was not repaired. the contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number: 02v080000 (air bags:frontal). the failure and current mileage was 140,000.

Srs warning light. unable to analyze. drl warning light comes on intermittenly. *tr

Srs light stays on. this indicates that the airbags may not deploy in an accident. honda lifetime warranty for restraint system should cover this, but they don't. seat belt switches were checked and ok so sensor needs to be replaced. repair cost estimate: up tp $900. why isn't nhtsa issuing a recall for this potential safety issue? look at the long list of complaints for this in the database! *tr

I have accord se 2000. the srs light stays on. the dealer must take responsibility and fix this problem of main control unit malfunction.

Failure of opds unit on my 2000 honda accord 4-door v-6. as an outcome of a joint action lawsuit honda agreed to extend the opds warranty to 10 years from the delivery date of the vehicle or 156,000 miles. my opds unit has failed just 3 months after the 10 year extension. this is the 2nd sds system failure as the seat belt sensor has failed in the past. honda now covers the seat belt failure on the many accord models for lifetime as the failure is common. failure of sds airbag system on honda accords and other honda vehicle models is an on-going chronic problem that renders the entire airbag system inactive upon any component failure. this is a serious safety hazard to owners and due to the high cost to repair the sds system many owners cannot afford to make the sds airbag system operative again. honda must step up to insuring that lifetime warranties on the sds systems are in place for all owners as an sds failure may result in injury or death for the vehicle owners. way too many sds system failures have been documented by honda dealers and owners. who knows just how many "red lights" are actually on the dashboards of honda accords out there that simply don't get fixed due to the high cost of repair? *tr

Dash light for right airbag came on and an alarm while driving and is still on.

Dear nhtsa: i am writing about my 2000 honda accord coupe which had an accident on may 22nd, 2010. i was driving in dry conditions along i-85 north in jefferson county, georgia when the left rear tire suddenly blew out causing my car to flip and roll over. we do not know what caused the blowout. i lost consciousness briefly and my neck was severely broken. i had to have an operation and will be out of work for at least three months. my son was injured but not as severely as me, with many cuts on his face and ear. two other occupants received many bruises and cuts on arms, legs and faces. the car was a total loss. there are two issues that seem to point to defects in the car. the first is that the roof collapsed so much that it hit my head and almost killed me. the second issue is that none of the four air bags deployed. it seems to me that with so much damage to the car as it rolled over and crushed the roof, that the air bags should have deployed. i would appreciate your investigating this car to see if federal guidelines were violated. *tr

I also have a 2000 honda accord lx with approx. 134,000 miles and the srs indicator light stays on. the authorized honda dealer reported that this was not under a recall per my vin. even a quick search indicates that this is a very common defect with this model and year. honda needs to issue a safety recall on this problem. *tr

I have a honda accord 2000 ex with 132000 miles. 1. the dashboard light does not work so i cannot see the equipment reading 2. the srs light on and stays on after the jump start the car. i check the online there are so many of the honda accord that have the same problem and this should be the safety issue. honda should take care of them. *tr

I am not on the recall list however i called honda as the srs light remains on. after speaking to 4 representatives at honda they informed me that the previous owner responded to a recall in 2006 service bulletin recall 06-009 - code opds which is for faulty airbags and seatbelts. the previous owner had repair done according to honda 3/31/2010 - 10 year warranty. i bought this car at 89000 odometer on 10/11/2012. approx. 6 months ago the srs light came on. i contacted honda with no assistance as they said there is a 10 year warranty on this recall. yesterday i started by getting assistance from emily, briana, nicole and alexis at honda - case no. n012015-05-2002159 and to expect a call from honda. yesterday afternoon james (no id or last name) regional case manager. he informed me that he could not assist me. 1. i am not the original owner. 2. i am not a loyal honda owner as i have not bought another honda. 3. no repairs through honda. 4. the car is over 10 years old. i informed him to check another recall which supercedes the previous recall and dated 3/14/2006. he informed me to have the repair done at my expense at honda and the case is closed. i told him that this was a fault with honda and it is not 10 years since the recall and i fear driving my only car with an enormous problem in case of an accident - seat belts and airbags and an enormous danger to me and my grandchildren. he informed me that this was not his or honda's responsibility. please help me. i need honda to take responsibility.

Srs light illuminated, airbags will not deploy if involved in accident. this has occurred on our 2000 honda accord with 67k miles on it. we understand that the warranty has been extended for this issue to 10 years or 150k miles, ours is now ten years old. we feel this is unacceptable and that honda should cover this for the lifetime of the vehicle. this is why people buy vehicles with all the airbags...safety! honda should cover this problem no questions asked!! for life.*dt

My 2000 honda accord srs light is on, no any accident was involved. the light keeps on even after reset several times. i wonder if the manufacturer covers the cost of replacement for vehicle safety. *tr

Honda accord 2000 srs light on and stays on. checked on line many honda owners have that issue and airbag would not deploy. called honda customer service told me my vin is not covered under their extended warranty, need to pay for diagnostic check. this is serious safety issue, wanted to bring to your attention. *tr

Egr port valve ,air bag light. *tr

Multiple issues with honda accord 2000 ex v6 3.0l. 96k miles as of 11/25/09 1. srs light has been on and dealer is not fixing it saying it is not a safety issue 2. transmission failed and i had to spend 2k fixing it 3. egr clogged and check engine light is on. dealer not fixing it saying it has been done before. *tr

In june 09, have an issue with srs light coming on in my 2000 honda accord vehicle. the dealership said that this is an seat belt issue and fixed it. when i took the car to dealership in jan-2010 for srs symbol, dealer said that this is an opds sensor issue and since my car is out of warranty this will not be covered. my question- since this is a safety issue and honda is aware of this, why is honda not recalling. my car has 115,000 miles and this is purchased in nov 1999. can we have honda issue a recall for this instead of warranty extension? The srs light has turned on so there is something wrong with the air bags. if anyone were to get in an accident deaths will occur as the air bags may not deploy. with a bit of research i have found that this is a common problem with honda accords dating from 1998-2011. http://www.carcomplaints.com/honda/accord/2000/seat_belts_air_bags/srs_light_is_on.shtml this website provides many owners' accounts of the same exact problem in which honda refuses to solve a problem that they have caused. it is a lethal design flaw and honda should be solving this problem instead of making their customers pay ridiculous prices for it to get fixed just to have the srs light come on moments after the so called repairs. the customers are not responsible, it is honda. please contact honda and resolve this issue. for every moment delayed, the more likely it is for a fatal accident to occur due to this problem.

My 2000 honda accord ex multiplex control unit malfunctioned causing my dash lights to go out and i can't see my dash panel at night ie. speedometer. this is a safety issue and i am a single mom with 2 young kids and haven't owned the car for even a year and less than 10 years old and less than 100,000 miles and nothing i did caused the multiplex control unit to malfunction and there is a recall on this already for 2000 honda accord but american honda has given my several excuses as well as the salesperson at the dealership called and was told a different answer one was with the plant car came from.one was if it was a v6 then one was having an lx model one was with saying the mileage issue or they would fix it. basically just a bunch of bs over and over. they need to honor their recall. honda is supposed to be a safe dependable car and now i have a safety issue with driving and i am nurse and have to use my car for work and oncall but a night can't see the dash lights. i also have my srs light on which is another issue which my total airbag system needs to be replaced with a warranty on it as well but not with my exactly problem which there is another manufacturer malfunction but won't fix as well when nothing i did with either safety issues caused these to malfunction and american honda is aware and has recalls on these but won't honor the recalls with my 2000 honda accord. *tr

For no apparent reason at all (no moisture problem; no cell phone, computer, etc. use; no disconnecting anything at all, much less related to seat belts, passenger seat occupancy, seat removal, etc.) the srs light came on and has remained on for many months. google shows this to be a widespread problem, which has triggered a very wide range of responses from honda. this has been a wonderful car given timely completion of all scheduled maintenance. but the srs light problem, since it involves the safety restraining systems, should be guaranteed for the life of the car. but, given the various ways people with this issue have been treated, i am reluctant to take the vehicle to honda. it may only require a reset for the light, which should cost nothing. but charges for a diagnosis are in the $70-100 range. then, if there is actually a problem with safety, fixes have cost in a range of $600-1500. the whole situation is absurd.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 honda accord. the air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument control panel, which indicates that the air bags are inoperative. as a consequence in a situation that warrants the air bags may fail to deploy. no repairs were made. the failure mileage was 90,800. the current mileage was 91,000.

I have a 2000 honda accord lx. the srs light is on. honda service centers don't want to fix this under the warranty because they say there is no recall for this item. however, i have found out that there are thousands of people with this same issue online. there is no way of knowing if this is a seat belt or air bag problem and honda wants to charge $100 for a diagnostics on a very common issue among honda owners. this is a safety item that needs to be recalled on all hondas with the srs light on. *tr

Srs light came on and will not turn off. my car's vin is not part of the safety recall, so honda will not pay for the repair. no accidents, under 66k miles on a 2000 accord. this is ridiculous. *tr

I have a 2000 honda accord. the "srs" light came on the dash and stays on whenever the ignition is on. i took it to the dealer and they told me it is a switch within the driver's side seat belt buckle. they told me the belt and the buckle are covered under the seat belt warranty but the switch is not covered and the diagnostic test is not covered either. the whole assembly is part of the safety system and should be covered along with the diagnostic test. *tr

1. srs readiness indicator illumination for no apparent reason. 2. srs readiness indicator illumination constant with no physical consequences to date. 3. awaiting repair. *tr

Nhtsa action number: pe05043 already had service in 2009, srs problem back, dealer refused warranty corrective action. *tr

2000 honda accord srs warning light. honda should repair this defect regardless of age or mileage of this car. my car has 159,000 miles so it is not within the window of their service bulletin. *tr

I went to the honda dealer , i asked them to replace the air bag module of my honda accord 2000 . the air bag of this vehicle is turned on all the time . i showed them copy of the odi nhtsa campaign id number : 02v080000. they claimed that i have to pay $89.00 to test the car , and then they will check the vin number. they requested the letter from honda in order to proceed. please advise me. *tr

I have experienced a recurring failure with the s.r.s. module in a 2000 honda accord the module was replaced a 28,000 miles and again at 75,000 miles the warning light went on again at about 82,000 miles. seems there is a manufacturing defect in this module. *tr

My wife was driving 2000 honda accord ex when the drivers side airbag deployed for no reason. no collision took place. there was no reason why this should happen. no major injury, just a little banged up. *tr

1) no problem until a recent trip, 2) srs light came on, stays on, air bag/seat belt issue? 3) charge me to diagnose. *tr

Srs indicator light stays on. both the honda dealer and american honda motors disallow responsiblity. *tr

The srs light came on and has remained on since. my car is garaged, has 48,000 miles on it and has suffered no accidents. your listing shows that many other honda accords have the same defect. since this is a safety device i feel nhtsa should treat this seriously. *tr

Srs airbag light is on. i have looked into this online and there seems to be many complaints pertaining to the same issue. honda says they will not check it for less than 100 dollars. many people seem to have this same problem with similar results! if this is a safety concern affecting multiple cars then an investigation should take place. thank you for your time 2000 honda accord se. 134,000 miles. *tr

Have and owned since new a 2000 honda accord lx 4-door sedan. it failed va state inspection due to a srs light on. dealer right away wants to charge $100 to $120 dollars for a diagnostic test. i have read numerous srs light problems with same vehicle owners. all stating it was a faulty opds sensor/ opds unit. dealer charges from $500 to $900 for this fix. this is a safety issue and costs are outrageous. diagnostic test should be free along with honda free replacement. i'm not happy at all. *tr
