Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the vehicle stalled while the contact was driving approximately 15 mph. the failure was experienced numerous times. the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the ignition switch. the manufacturer advised the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch) and would not assist with the repair costs. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 86,000 and the current mileage was 88,700.

The engine fails while driving for no apparent reason. the car is running fine, then at different speeds, the engine fails. all braking and power functions fail. this occurs at different times and dates. there does not seen to be any reason for it. the engine runs fine when it is re-started. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact stated that the engine failed, causing the vehicle to stall without warning while driving at various speeds. additionally, the engine would sporadically fail to start. the contact inspected the vehicle and located the failure at the ignition switch. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the approximate failure mileage was 27,000 and the current mileage was 50,000.

On several occasions my car would not start. this would happen out of nowhere, sometimes it would start up after a few minutes and sometimes i would have to come back and get it. on one occasion the vehicle died while i was driving down the road. shortly after that i took it to a honda dealership to have it repaired. according to the dealership the ignition switch was the cause of the problem. i paid $233.27 for parts and labor. they also charged me to repair a few other things, in total i spent around $400.00. since then my brother purchased a 1999 honda accord and they started having the same problems. he found out that his car was part of a recall for the ignition switch and he took his car to the same dealership and they fixed it for free. i looked online and it seems that honda accords from 1997-2002 all have this common problem with the ignition switch failing. i believe my car should be included in the recall. and i believe i should be reimbursed for my expense in repairing the ignition switch.

I own a 1998 honda accord and i am experiencing issues where my car completely cuts off while driving. just recently, this past sunday to be exact, my car cut off 3 times in traffic while i was driving and i was almost rear ended by another vehicle. when my car shuts off, i lose all power and my dash board goes black (not 1 light is lit). i have to find a way to get out off traffic safely, so i can place my car in park and restart it. my car restarts with no problems but my car also dies/cuts off without any warning. i contacted honda today and was told that my car was not part of the ignition switch recall #02-031 but they said that it was part of the ignition switch interlock recall#03-088. i took my car to a repair shop and was told that the reason my car is cutting off while driving is because of a faulty ignition switch. i have not corrected the problem on my own because i feel that my car should be included in recall#02-031 and honda should absorb the cost.if all else fails i will have to pay for the repairs myself, to avoid being seriously hurt or injuring someone else. i feel unsafe driving my car because i am constant worrying about "will my car cut off in traffic and cause a serious accident". i have no choice but to drive it at this point because it is my only means of transportation. please take this complaint into serious consideration because lives are being endangered. thank you *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the ignition switch was repaired under recall campaign number 03v423000 which deals with the ignition. the vehicle did not have a problem stalling prior to the recall repair. after the repair the contact stated that the vehicle began to stall without warning. the vehicle was turned off for a few hours and was difficult to start after 3 to 4 attempts. the failure mileage was 105000. the current mileage was 107000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord ex. the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. the vehicle was able to restart at times and the vehicle inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that he needed to replace the ignition switch. the vehicle was repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 200,000. the vin was unavailable.

1998 honda accord(four-cylinder sedan) horn works intermittently. sometimes the horn works at the slightest touch and at other times it does not work at all. also, ignition switch of the said vehicle was replaced for the second time. the engine of the said vehicle would die and cause the car to stall while driving. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the vehicle was previously repaired for the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000, electrical system:ignition:switch. while driving at an unknown speed the vehicle stalled. he was unable to give an approximate speed and he was also unaware if any service lights illuminated on the dashboard. upon restart the vehicle continued to drive as normal. this failure became intermittent and sometimes the vehicle did not immediately restart. the vehicle had not been taken to have the failure diagnosed and had not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 180,000.

1998 honda accord stalls randomly while driving. dash light flashes for a brief instant at same time engine stalls. at first dealer told me to try different keys as it may be a bad key triggering the engine immobilizer, but problem occurs with other keys. this car has had a previous recall for defective ignition switch which would cause the car to stall suddenly and randomly while driving. this appears to be the same issue. my car shows that the recall repair was done a few years ago, but now it appears the same situation is coming back as the replacement switches may be failing. this appears to be a real safety concern as it can cause the engine to stall at any time while driving, including "freeway driving" and cause the potential for serious accidents to occur. *tr

I was driving my 98 honda accord at 65mph and suddenly the engine stalled without warning. it was difficult to steer as the power steering stopped working. luckily the highway was not busy and i escaped any crash. the car restarted after jiggling the key. i took it to the mechanic to find that the ignition switch was faulty. a honda dealer told me that the ignition switch was replaced in a recall. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact stated that the ignition switch could degrade due to the high electrical current passing through the switch when the vehicle was started (this information given per recall 02v120000-electrical system: ignition: switch). the contact was informed that due to the age of the recall, it was closed. the failure mileage was 140,000.

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact stated that when driving at any speed, the vehicle would stall without warning. the dealer advised that the ignition switch was defective and would need to be replaced at the owner's expense. the manufacturer advised that there was a recall for the failure but the contact's vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 225,000.

1998 honda accord vehicle just shuts off while driving does not want to restart and run. you have to let it sit then restart. found similar complaints on line checked with honda for ignition recalls. none on this vehicle but they said it sounds like the ignition switch. have had it replaced at my expense and hope it solved the problem. *tr

Engine dies when driving at high speeds. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to multiple independent mechanics who were unable to diagnose the failure. the failure recurred on numerous occasions. the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. the contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 02v120000 (electrical system) but the vin was not included. the failure mileage was 98,000. updated 8/10/15*cn updated 10/05/2017*cn

1998 honda accord stalls randomly while driving. dash lights flash for a brief instant at same time engine stalls and you can hear all the dashswitch relays firing. this car had a previous recall for defective ignition switch which would cause the car to stall suddenly and randomly while driving. this appeared to be the same issue. my car had the recall repair done a few years ago. the dealer told me that the replacement switch was failing. i paid over $245 for a 3rd ignition switch to be installed. this is a real safety concern as it can cause the engine to stall at any time while driving, including "freeway driving" and cause the potential for serious accidents to occur. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact was driving approximately 35 mph when the engine stalled without warning. the vehicle restarted and began to function normally. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic prior to the failure regarding ignition problems; however, no repairs were made. the manufacturer was notified and stated that there were two recalls under the nhtsa campaign id numbers 02v120000 and 03v423000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the vin was excluded from the recall defect. the failure mileage was 138,445.

My honda accord 1998 engine has stopped. when i was trying to start it was working but only till i loose switch in "on" position. so i couldn't to drive, because it not safe. in my understanding it is electrical switch (part of ignition switch) problem. *tr

1999 honda accord purchased as a used car in 2006. no problems up until recently when the car stalled several times. car would start up after stalling. took car into mechanic and was told that there maybe be a recall on the ignition switch which he thought was the problem. took car to honda dealer. they said that vin of car did not fall into recall for the ignition switch. they did find that the electrical portion of the ignition switch was bad and replaced it for 250.00. i explained that there was 2002 recall on this exact part and that the car should be considered under the recall but the technician said if the exact vin doesn't show up under the recall, they cannot fix the problem for free. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving at various speeds, the contact stated that the vehicle would stall intermittently without warning similar to nhtsa campaign id number: 03v423000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). the dealer and manufacturer informed the contact that her vehicle was not included in the previous recall and offered no additional assistance. a local mechanic informed the contact that the ignition switch needed to be replaced but did not perform any repairs. the current mileage was 168,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

While driving, the engine got shut, steering got completely locked (can't do any left-right). the key light got on. all other lights were off. luckily there was no car behind my car. else i would have met severe accident. i stopped the car, restarted it, and reached home safely. i am scared now to drive anymore. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving 65 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to coast onto the emergency lane. she was able to restart the vehicle and continue driving until the vehicle stalled a second time within a few miles. the dealer replaced the ignition switch and stated that the electrical wires were defective which caused the vehicle to stall. although there was a recall for the failure, the manufacturer stated that her vin was not included in the recall (nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the failure and current mileages were 150,000.

Engine cuts off at 60 mph. sometimes hard starting. honda said it was the ignition and replaced it. works fine now. 220k miles and still rolling. *tr

1. i was driving normally at steady speed on an interstate highway. 2. the engine shut down and restarted then a short while later shut down. 3. the dealership is going to replace the ignition. i still have the old part. the same part has already been replaced once due to a recall by honda. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut off. he was able to restart the vehicle and drive normally. there where no warning lights when the failure occurred. a local mechanic inspected the vehicle and determined that the vin was a part of nhtsa campaign number 03v423000, electrical system: ignition:switch; however, the repair cost was $200.00 and the failure recurred. the manufacturer advised the contact that vehicle was previously repaired per the recall and no compensation would be offered. the failure mileage was 151,000 and the current mileage was 151,200.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired according to a recall; however, the failure still persists. while making a turn at 30 mph, the entire vehicle shut off and lost power without warning. the failure has occurred twice. the dealer stated that the ignition switch was previously replaced by the previous owner according to nhtsa campaign id number 03v423000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). the contact stated that this was a serious safety issue and defect. he would be responsible for the repair cost. the failure mileage was 88,300 and current mileage was 86,100. updated 08/31/09 *bf updated 09/03/09.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving between 25-30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the engine was able to be restarted after several attempts. the failure occurred intermittently and the vehicle was taken to two different independent mechanics on two separate occasions. the technicians were unable to duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that there was ignition switch corrosion. the ignition switch was replaced. the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 02v1002000 (electrical system:ignition:switch), although the failures were identical. the failure mileage was 159,100 and current mileage was 159,950. updated 10/06/09 *bf updated 10/08/09.*jb

Had the ignition switch replaced on our 1998 honda accord dx in 2002 via the nhtsa# 02v120000 recall at honda dealer. recently car stalled a few times and i discovered it was the ignition switch they replaced in 2002. i have since moved but called nearest honda dealer 60 miles away and asked if they would replace it and they refused, stating i did not have the extended warranty on vehicle. i feel since the part was on safety recall and it failed again; i should be reimbursed for the $150.00 i had to spend locally to repair problem so the vehicle could be driven safely. i also have the defective part that was replaced. thank you. *tr

A week ago the lights on my dash flashed on and off several times as i was driving at 60 mpg. i did not lose power, and the car ran fine for a week. tonight, the car lost power as i was driving, thankfully only at 35 mph. i restarted it and i got home safely. i was told it may be the ignition system, and as i was investigating on the internet, my situation was very similar to others mentioned in the articles. *tr

1998 honda accord does not always start and stalls while driving. i called american honda and they claimed, based on my vin number, that the recall issued for this problem does not apply to my particular car. it makes no sense that i have this problem if, as honda claims, this defect does not exist in my car. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the contact stated that while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. the failure was experienced numerous times. the previous owner took the vehicle to the dealer for recall 02v120000 (electrical system: ignition: switch) but the failure was not corrected and the vehicle continued to stall. the contact did not take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis. the manufacturer was not yet contacted. the failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 155,000.

1998 honda accord with horn that was always difficult to sound. then sounded only intermittently. now usually will not sound at all. *tr

My 1998 honda accord lx while driving would turn itself off. this occured repeatedly in city driving conditions and also on freeway driving conditions at 60 miles and above. when the engine would turn off, all dash lights including the green "key" security light would come on. the car would start up again if you turned the ignition key on, but at 60 miles an hour, or crossing a busy street and losing power that would not be the first thing one would do and the problem could have led into very serious accidents. given there was no code in the computer, the remedy was a hit and miss, my mechanic after he extensively test drove my car for a week found that on occasions when he was behind a red light when he touched the ingnition key, the car turned itself off. he then connected with a honda mechanic and he informed him that the ignition harness had a short. when he went to purchase a new harness, the supplier (accroding to what he told me) had shared with him that, "oh yes, we always keep a supply of these harnesses, they go out a lot!" given the danger this poses to this vehicle (it seems the model was produced for several years), there should be some warning to owners of this dangerous situation so that they can have a competent technician test their ignition harness and make sure there are no shorts.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving at any speed, the vehicle suddenly shuts off. the vehicle is able to immediately restart after the failure occurs. the dealer could not duplicate the failure. the current and failure mileages were 124,000. updated 10/20/09 *cn updated 10/22/09.*jb

1998 honda accord quit running in an intersection, on interstate, and other dangerous situations. would start back up seconds after it quit running. faulty ignition switch found to be cause. started occurring over the last year very infrequently then more frequently. *tr

1998 honda accord had recall for the ignition switch. *nj ***nar*** the consumer stated the vehicle would unexpectedly shut off while driving. the consumer had to put the vehicle in neutral and had to try several times to restart it. the auto service informed the consumer the ignition switch needed to be replaced. when the consumer contacted the dealer, he was told that no such recall showed in the computer database. the consumer contact honda and was told his vehicle was not on the recall list and with the amount of miles on the vehicle that he should expect for the ignition switch to fail.*jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving 10 mph in local traffic, the vehicle shut off several times. the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and they stated that the ignition switch was failing. a report was filed with the manufacturer and they stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id numbers 02v120000 or 03v423000 (electrical system: ignition: switch). the contact stated that he will purchase the switch and replace it himself. the current and failure mileages were 148,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving 70 mph, the contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline. the vehicle stalled and then automatically restarted. the dealer stated that because the vehicle was previously repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 03v423000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) in 2004, they would not assume financial responsibility for any additional repairs. the manufacturer did not assist. the failure and current mileages were 150,688.

My 1998 honda accord had the ignition switch recall performed with the recall came out. in november 2008, i started to notice starting issues. the dash light would flicker. after trying a couple of times the car would start. the car ran fine until around january 2009 when the car engine shut down without warning while stopping at a traffic light while driving home from work. the car was able to start back up immediately. one day while driving on the interstate in feb. 2009, the engine rpm started dropping and i could not accelerate to get more speed. i pulled into the emergency lane and stopped the car while the car was still on and in drive position. once i stopped, i could accelerate again. another time the dash lights flicker when i tried to start the car. the car did not start until after a couple of tries. each time, these problems occurred, i check if it was related to a certain condition (weather, temperature, etc). the problems happened randomly. after reading various complaints on this site and other sites, i started to try to reproduce the dash board flickering just by turning the car on but not starting the engine. i was able to reproduce the flickering by slowly turning the key toward the off position. i talked to honda headquarters and they told me the recall was already accomplished and the my car was out of warranty and they can not do anything about it. my car now 142250 miles. i talked with the dealership that i had the recall done and they said they could not do anything about it. i talked with another dealership where i get my maintenance done now. they said that it would be $100 to run a diagnostic on the car. i told them what would guarantee me that the problem would be found if the car was running fine at the time. i will be replacing the ignition switch on i figure out how to get to the wiring since honda will help with this issues. this switch is putting me in unsafe situations when driving. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. the vehicle was almost in a crash due to the vehicle shutting off on a six-lane highway. the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id numbers 03v423000 or 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). in november of 2008, while driving approximately 55 mph on the road, the entire dashboard flickered off and the vehicle completely shut off for approximately one second before restarting. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in any relevant recalls. the current mileage was approximately 145,000 and failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

The ignition system fails in my 1998 honda accord. it has already been through the recall process for the same problem (03v423000). design problems were obviously not corrected. the recall appears to have replaced existing parts with new parts that are the same. car cuts out due to failure of ignition circuit to be completed. this can occur anywhere. it has happened driving down the road at 60 mph. sitting for 1 minute will sometimes correct the situation. jiggling the key will sometimes correct the situation. can result in dangerous situations in traffic. *tr

I drive a 98 honda accord sedan. the engine and the whole electrical system died on me while i was driving on i-75. there was sudden loss of power, no hydraulic brakes, no power steering, no head lights, it was so scary. it was very difficult to stop the car and get the car to shoulder. this happened to me twice. *tr

The vehicle is cutting off while driving whether you are at a traffic light or driving at various speeds. this has not caused an accident yet but it is only a matter of time before it causes one. as i looked on the web i see where there are several other complaints about this issue. *tr

Horn works only on rare occasions, primarily when wheel is turned sharply to either direction. dealer has stated that this is a known problem, but it will take several hundred dollars to fix, which includes replacing part of the driver air bag assembly. over time, the problem has worsened, and dealer says it likely the horn will eventually fail completely.*ak due to financial difficulties, i do not have the money to fix, thus i no longer have a working horn. i am concerned that the air bag may also fail in an accident. i notice that there have been at least 5 other complaints about this problem, yet no investigation or recall has been initiated. this is a serious and known safety defect which needs to be addressed. many owners of these cars may have non-working horns and not even realize it until it is too late. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving between 45-50 mph, the vehicle would shut off on its own. the key switch would blink on and off seconds before the vehicle would shut off. the dealer stated that her vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch). the dealer stated that the ignition needed to be replaced at the cost of $250. the failure mileage was 151,000 and current mileage was 154,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 honda accord. while driving various speeds, the vehicle would stall without warning. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic and the entire engine was replaced. one year later, the failure resurfaced accompanied by a no-start condition. the dealer would not repair the vehicle according to nhtsa campaign id number 02v120000 (electrical system:ignition:switch) because she allowed an independent mechanic to replace the engine. the manufacturer also would not assist. she never received a recall notice, even though she is the original owner of the vehicle. the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 127,111.

My stepdaughter's car would shut down with no warning. being an aircraft mechanic i spent a lot of time trouble shooting this intermittent problem and was quite sure this was an electrical problem which can be the hardest problem to narrow down so i change quite a few of the common part and tuned up the vehicle i changed the following components: distributor cap rotor, timing belts wires cleaned the fuel injection and a few other components yet the vehicle would mysteriously shut down. going in to florida winter the problem seem to go away however i was not surprised once it warmed-up the problem started again and more frequently. i did an internet search and found there had been a recall on the ignition switch for this exact problem. i called honda america and the informed me the recall had been performed on the vehicle i was less than convinced. i finally switched vehicle for a week to trouble shoot the problem. having to main suspect in mine the ignition switch and the main relay i went to the local junk yard to see if i could find these two components with out spending. finding these two components on my way home the car stalled ' i quickly change the relay car still stalled then changed the ignition switch and the problem has again seemed to gone away since honda said the performed the recall work i can only surmise the replacement parts are also faulty or the recall work was not done, however documented. i have the switch as an exhibit should any one want to see the fault. i noticed the solder has flowed off two of the contacts and the inner working look excessively heat worn. *tr
