We have classified the 872 complaints from 2012 Ford Fusion about STEERING into the following categories.
The dashboard info displays "power assist failure" when stationary (a cold start), either when the key is turned to the on position, or after starting the engine. the steering wheel will require great effort to turn it when this happens. this warning happens now about 1 to 3 times a week. it started at about 74000 miles. currently the car has 80000 miles. to work around the problem, the ignition is turned to off, turned on again, wait a few seconds, then restart the motor. the steering may feel tight when turned for about 1 second, but will loosen as the power steering works again. the warning has not repeated after restarting. so far, the steering has not failed (become tight) while driving. the warning at start up occurs more frequently in cold or wet weather. the car was last serviced at the ford dealership at about 72000 miles with the only notice the brakes need service soon. the sync system reports indicate no problems when uploaded to the auto insurance company. it was cold this morning 25 f when the "power assist failure" reoccurred again. after restarting, the warning did not repeat, but steering was stiff about 1 second. i decided to report this. this steering type issue has never occurred in previous cars i have owned. these electric steering systems needs to be banned as a safety issue. also, they are expensive to repair because it has to be completely replaced.
As i drove into work parking lot steering power light came on. two hours later i went to try the car and steering was gone and had to have someone drive it to a station. the rack and pinion are not working.
Vehicle was in motion when power steering service notification came on. we pulled into a gas station and shut the car off. upon turning the car back on, the steering wheel was locked and the car was undrivable from that point and had to be towed.
15s18/15n01 reprogram power steering control module and steering gear extended coverage
The steering assistt fault comes on now , my steering doesn't work, almost got in a wreck..also my advance traction comes on at the same time, i paid good money for this car. i think ford needs to fix this problem at their expense.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. while driving approximately 35 mph, the "service advance trac" and "service power steering now" warning messages displayed and the power steering suddenly malfunctioned, which caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. the vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the steering computer chip malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. the failure mileage was 140,000.
I stopped at the gas station to fill up when i got back in and started my car the power steering was not working. i managed to drive the car home. when taking it to the dealership they told me my car was not covered by the recall on the electronic power steering recall. they stated the recall only covered certain cars manufactured during certain months, mine not being one. i feel that the recall should cover more of the manufacturing dates due to my research online there are hundreds of people with the same issue that have been told by ford that their not covered by the recall. i believe that they jumped the gun on the time table for the recall. ford doesn't want to take responsibility due to the high cost of repair. the ford recall number is 15-s-18. now my car is sitting here because i don't have the money to repair it.
Power steering went out. i bought the car from a used dealership and was never informed about the recall. when i brought the car into a dealership there informed me to call ford, when i did my car was at 151,000 miles. ford is refusing to fix the problem. i purchased the car with 101,000 miles on it. ford is not very good at informing there customers about recalls
The power steering assist code keeps coming on on the dash every othee day for well over a year now. when that comes on you can barely steer the fricken thing when it happens. ive been lucky enough to have it happen while driving slow in town and havent had any accidents luckily. some very close calls though!
Power steering assist failure on 2012 ford fusion. power steering assist light is on and there is no power steering. very dangerous as it gives out while the car is in motion. ford knows they have a larger problem with 2012 ford fusions (just read the complaints on this site) but have not expanded the recall and leaves these dangerous cars on the road where power steering stops working even while you are driving. ford dealer said car is not cover by warranty or by recall. cost to repair $1,600.
While driving, the power steering will intermittently stop working, requiring unexpected difficult steering.
The vehicle was parked in my driveway upon returning from errands. the next morning the power steering assist and the advancetrac system failure lights were on. this has happened before while driving and after parking at my workplace. usually restarting the vehicle would correct the issue. this time it would not reset and i brought it to the ford dealership where it was purchased. i understand there was a recall on the 2012 ford fusion and other ford makes for this same issue. however the dealership says the vin # on my fusion doesn't match any current recall and will not cover the cost of repair. my question is if this is a known ford problem why should it not cover my vehicle with the same issue for recall ? just because the vin # isn't in the system is no reason not to fix this. it is a known problem, many situations exactly like mine recorded online. how are they (ford)not responsible?
Power steering failed and the car left the highway and both front tires blew out and damage to the wheel and undercarraige was apparent.
Power steering failure! epas system on 10/27/2017. my daughter was driving car, she stopped for gas, she started car and power steering failed. i see there is a recall on the power steering system but guess what my vin number is not part of the recall! sounds fishy to me why do i have a epas system failure and my car is not part of recall? i have a case number at ford #13421730. i have the car at the ford dealership in buda texas truck city ford. they are going to charge me $115.00 to analyse the car with their computer. i just don't want to pay for a new epas steering system if the cause of the failure is a defective epas system!!!
There is a grinding/pooping noise from front of vehicle when turning. the recall 15s18 was reprogrammed along recall 16b38 but the noise has continued and has gotten worse. when driving slow and turning to the left and right in a parking lot it is very noticeable the dealership stated the noise was coming from the steering rack.
The advancetrac and epas (electronic power assist steering) failure warnings have come on. it is actually "service advancetrac" and "service power steering now". this failure occurred while was my wife was driving her 2012 ford fusion. she was making a left turn and the steering went out (steering became very difficult). apparently, it went into manual mode. there is a recall for this problem however our car was not included as part of the recall even though it was made in the same mexico plant with the same model year plus it is a 4 cylinder 2.5l engine (not the 3.5l). ford does not want to own up that this is their problem. instead, it will be a $1900 fix for us to update software and/or replace epas. our car was manufactured a month after the february 2012 end window for the recall. the vehicle drifts incredibly to the left. just recently, i had to replace just the front lh tire as the steel radial was exposed and the tire bulged. this was due to the uneven wear exerted by the epas issue. we do not have the deep pockets to get this resolved. we need help from nhtsa and ford to extend the recall to all 2012 ford fusions. i would like to see the dfmea on this car specifically the steering system from trw.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. after starting the engine, the steering wheel was very difficult to turn and the "steering failure" and "advance track" warning messages displayed. the vehicle was taken to the local dealer (don davis ford in arlington, texas) where it was diagnosed that the steering gear was faulty and needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. the failure mileage was 120,000.
I was traveling down a main street and i heard a beep and power steering assist fault lite up on my dash as well with service advancetrac came on so i pull off the road and into a parking lot and my wheel all the sudden got stiff. i sat there for a few trying to figure out what was wrong and i turned the car off and let it sit for a few mins and turned it back on hoping it would go away well it didn't, so i got it home finally 6 hours later still with all them lights on and the wheel being stiff let it sit over night and everything next day i go back to the car hoping once again it would go away and it didn't.
Takata: my power steering has gone out about ocbter of 2017 and i've been to a few mechanics and they have told me that theirs been recalls on this type of vehicle of their power steering going out and to take it to a dealership and that they can fix it for free because it's one of the recalls list online and i've tried calling them and letting know that their has been reports of recalls on the power steering but they keep telling me that's there's no recalls on my vehicle and from my understanding that this is a serious situation and needs to be addressed and fix due to the recalls to these vehicles. it went out while i was in motion on the road.
Daughter called me this morning and told me her power steering stopped working. had the car towed to the repair shop. looked up the model and it says there was a recall on the vehicle concerning power steering. just want to find out if the recall is still active.

I will just be driving and i lose my power steering which almost puts me in the ditch. needs to recall this. very dangerous and expensive to fix.
I was driving on interstate and power steering stopped working, the power assist fault and service advancetrac message showed on panel. luckily i did not wreck because that would have been bad. i had the car towed to ford dealership they said car was not covered by recall or warranty, car has 56,000 miles. ford you should recall for this problem this could cause a wreck with possible fatalities .
Returning from vacation, received "service power steering" message on dash, got car into driveway, turned off. restarted car and had no power steering! only 42,000 miles on car. called ford re problem, was told no recall, $1400 to replace steering rack!!! what if the steering froze while driving???

Ford worked on my ford fusion 2012 repaired air conditioner on july 7, 2017, but air went out again on september 6, 2017. ford dealer refuse to fix the reoccurring problem. in addition, there is a recall on the airbag, but ford refuses to fix the defected air bag. there is a possibility that the air bag may explode causing injury. while driving i can smell a burnt odor was coming from the air bag. took vehicle to change the airbag on sept 6, 2017, but ford refused to fix the defected air bag, and would not give me a loaner vehicle.
Complete loss of steering assist while vehicle was in motion. my daughter was driving on a city street, and was barely able to steer, but luckily she was able to make it home without incident.
There currently is a recall on 2011-2012 ford fusions power steering recall #15s18, that began in july 2015. i have a 2012 ford fusion i bought in september 2015, that apparently is not covered under this recall. but driving home from work the other day, on a highway my power steering suddenly failed as i was driving 55mph, almost causing a major accident with many vehicles. i feel this was a major safety concern, my vehicle does not have many miles on it, and it has passed inspection every year. i think this recall should be extended before someone else's power steering fails and are not as lucky as i was that other drivers were able to brake in time. i've read on this website as well as many others that this recall needs to extended.
My power steering went out in the middle of the highway. i went to a ford certified dealership and had them look into this problem before anything dangerous happened. the following day, after picking my car up from the dealer my power steering went out completely while in the middle of the highway.
My power steering in my car stopped working, i googled my year make and model of my car. they list a recall for the problem nhtsa 15v30000, ford recall number 15s18. had it towed to ford dealership, they said that year and model has a recall but my vin # was not included in the recall but it's doing the same thing. how does that happen, do i have to be in an accident and it kills my 2 and 4 year children to be included. how can they exclude vin numbers. now there telling me it will cost 2000.00 dollars to fix......light came on when driving than stopped car, when i restarted car the power steering would not work.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. the contact stated that while attempting to park, the steering wheel became hard to turn and the power steering warning light illuminated while the failure occurred. the vehicle was taken to a local unknown dealer for a diagnostic testing which advised that the rack and pinion failed. the rack and pinion was replaced however, the failure was not corrected. the manufacturer advised that the vehicle identification number was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). the vehicle was not repaired. the vin information was not available the approximate failure mileage as 87,000. ...updated 11/15/17 *bf the consumer stated the vehicle jerk hard and there was no power steering. *js
The message "service power steering now" appears intermittently with no loss of power steering, except for once. this happens when the car is in motion and has happened on both the highway and city streets. the message disappears when hitting the reset button or turning the car off and back on.
Battery seemed dead on a monday morning as it would not turn over, i then jumped the car and still nothing happened. i let the car sit for the rest of the day, about 8 hours later started the car and it started fine. on tuesday morning i started the car just fine and drove to work, about 2 miles from my office the display on the dash board said "service power steering". i thought nothing of it and went on with my day, when leaving for lunch the display read "service power steering now", and car had no power steering. did research and found a recall on the power assist on 2011-2012 ford fusion without a 3.5l engine. called the dealer and to no avail, they said my vin was not on the list. mind you, my vehicle is a 2012 ford fusion with a 3.0l engine. took the car to a local mechanic, they tested everything and said they couldn't find anything wrong. mysteriously the power steering worked again. until i woke up wednesday morning for work and the same exact thing happened. recall #'s 15s18 and 15v340000 specifically state that the steering motor sensor may fail, resulting in loss of power steering assist from the electric power steering system.
Luckily while parked, wife started up her 2012 fusion to go to work. power assist fault and service advancetrac display in info screen and car has no power steering or traction control. had vehicle diagnosed, fault codes u3000 and u2011 were present. called dealership who said no open recall on vin. recall 15s18 does not cover my vin even though the car fits all of the criteria for the recall including date and manufacture location. ford cust. service unwilling to help. parts covered by the recall were replaced on sept. 13, 2016 by local ford dealer at previous owners expense, parts failed again less than a year later. these parts are not safe and ford is unwilling to fix the problem or extend recall to all vehicles affected by this electronic power assist failure. i've read hundreds of similar complaints now, what does it take to hold ford accountable for the safety of their products?

I was driving in my 2012 ford fusion, on a highway in new york state and pulled over at a rest area for a snack. upon returning to the vehicle, i started the car and was given a "power steering assist fault" error message and i had no power steering. there was no way i could have driven the car and i'm thankful this didn't happen a few minutes earlier when i was driving on the highway in traffic, in the rain. ford has had a recall for this same issue, but my car is not listed and now it will cost us $1,800 to have this common problem fixed by replacing the computer that handles the power steering. the mechanic at the ford dealer laughed it off saying he sees it all the time. the computer goes if you turn hard or hit a bump. ford needs to open up this recall and cover the replacement of this system.

After starting my car, the powder steering assist fault lit up on the dash. i was unable to move my steering wheel at all. it happened again that afternoon when i got back in my car and started it,. the vehicle was parked both times and on level ground.
The electronic power steering motor failed. there is a dash alert that the power steering needs service now, also an alert for the autotrak. there is a ford recall for this part on the same model and year car, but for what ever reason my car's vin was not included in the recall. i have read numerous other complaints online for the same thing. why was the recall limited to certain vin #"s and not every vehicle that has this part on it. the dealer repair is approx. $1700. please help

On july 8, 2017 while riding as a passenger and my husband driving with our 5 yr old niece in the back strapped in her car seat. a warning on the dash board showed "service advancetrac"/"service power steering now" we immediately headed for the nearest auto store to purchase power steering fluid and in doing so we quickly noticed that my husband had to use muscle and additional effort to turn the steering wheel. after finding out we had an electronic module and could not manually refill the power steering we took the chance of heading home while my husband continued to aggressively get the steering wheel to turn without any accident. when looking up recall information i noticed that according to our vin number our 2013ford fusion se was not of the specific models covered. we have called the dealership and will have to wait until july 11th and pay $95.00 just to diagnose the obvious problem and get an estimate. we have never received a warning regarding this malfunction from ford that our lives could suddenly be in danger because of the power steering going out and the fact that we live on modest income and have only one car. we expect ford to do their due deligence in extending the recall to cover the cost of the repair for the power steering on our 2012 ford fusion. we have always and only purchased our cars from ford and look forward to being provided excellent and honorable service in return simply because it is the right thing to do.
